This week's best NHL spot bet opportunities
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Letdown spot

The Ottawa Senators had little trouble bouncing back from a drubbing at the hands of the Red Wings, rallying to post a 4-2 victory over the Canucks in the Heritage Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Now comes the letdown. The Sens head east from Van-City for a stop in Edmonton to face the lowly Oilers on Tuesday night. Edmonton will have no shortage of motivation, having lost three games in a row. The Oilers last win came nearly a month ago, in New York back on February 6th.

Keep in mind, the Oilers won the previous meeting between these two teams back on October 19th in Ottawa.

    Lookahead spot

The Boston Bruins suffered a 4-2 home loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon, but they'll get another shot at Ovie and company later this week, once again in Beantown.

Before that, the B's will host the Florida Panthers in a clear lookahead spot on Tuesday night. While the Panthers have struggled for much of the season, they're no easy out. Note that they have posted 12 road victories this season, and they're coming off an uplifting come-from-behind 5-3 win on Long Island on Sunday.

    Schedule spot

Montreal heads west for a difficult four-game road trip beginning Monday night in Los Angeles. However, the worst spot on the trip will come later in the week, when the Canadiens play on the second of back-to-back nights. After taking on the Ducks in Anaheim on Wednesday, the Habs will travel to face the Coyotes in the desert on Thursday.

Phoenix doesn't exactly head into the new week on a high note, having lost three straight games. A return home should help. The 'Yotes are 17-10-3 in Glendale this season. Montreal has been solid away from home, but finds itself in the wrong place at the wrong time here.

Pucking the Trends: NHL's weekly betting news and notes
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Feb. 24-March 2.

      Hot team

      Los Angeles Kings (3-0 SU)

It looks like the Kings have caught fire at the perfect time as teams jockey for position in the crowded Western Conference standings. Los Angeles opened the post-Olympic week with a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, then showed off its defensive chops with a 2-0 triumph over the Calgary Flames and a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Jonathan Quick appears to have bounced back nicely from his Olympic disappointment, while the offense is deep and potent.

      Cold team

      Carolina Hurricanes (0-4 SU)

The Hurricanes were the exact opposite, coming out of the two-week break with no jump at all. Entering a pivotal stretch as it looks to challenge for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot, Carolina fell flat in the first four games of a five-game road trip, dropping decisions in Buffalo, Dallas, Los Angeles and Anaheim to slip to fourth-last in the conference. The team's top scorers are struggling, with winger Jeff Skinner still looking for his first point since the resumption of play.

      Best Over play

      Boston Bruins (3-0 O/U)

It was a barrage of high-scoring games as defenses struggle to keep up with opposing goal scorers - and the Bruins benefited from it to emerge as one of the strongest Over choices of the week. Boston resumed its charge toward the top seed in the East with a thud, dropping a 5-4 overtime decision to the Sabres and falling 4-2 to Washington - but bounced back nicely to beat the Rangers 6-3. Expect lower scores as goalie Tuukka Rask and the Boston defense sharpen up.

      Best Under play

      St. Louis Blues (1-2 O/U)

There weren't many good Under candidates last week, but the Blues fit the bill. They lost consecutive 1-0 decisions in Vancouver and Anaheim, and were less than two minutes from a third straight under before scoring the last of four third-period goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Phoenix. Armed with one of the top defenses in the league and having traded for elite goaltender Ryan Miller, expect St. Louis to remain a strong Under play for the remainder of the season.

      Surveying the schedule

Eastern Conference teams dread having to make the trip through three time zones - and now, it's the Montreal Canadiens' turn. Montreal sits second in the conference behind only the rival Bruins, but the lead on the rest of the contenders is tenuous - and will be put to the test as the Canadiens embark on a four-game West Coast trip that begins Monday in Los Angeles. Montreal, 16-12-2 on the road this season, will also visit Anaheim, Phoenix and San Jose on the trek.

Canadiens goalie Carey Price, placed on I-R

Price aggravated a lower-body injury following the Olympic break and was placed on the injured reserve as a result. No timetable has been established for his return.

Predators G Rinne to start Tuesday

The Nashville Predators recalled goaltender Pekka Rinne from his weekend conditioning assignment with the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL on Monday.

Rinne, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist, missed 51 games after having hip surgery to deal with an E.Coli infection. He is expected to start Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rinne, 31, stopped 33 of 35 shots in two wins with the Admirals over the weekend.

In his last five NHL games before the injury, Rinne was 3-1-1 with a 1.60 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage -- turning away 120 of 128 shots.

Since the 2008-09 season and before the injury, Rinne ranked first in the NHL in shutouts and was among the top 10 in wins, save percentage and goals-against average. He is one of just two netminders in franchise history to play at least 300 games for the team, and is just four wins away from tying Tomas Vokoun's franchise mark of 161 wins by a goaltender.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We've had seven days of hockey since players returned from Sochi and rejoined their NHL teams and the Over has been a solid bet since.

There have been 43 games since the Olympic break ended and the Over/Under count is currently 25-16-2, good enough for a 61 percent success rate.

Non-Overtime games are even better at 20-12, which equals 62.50 percent.

Tuesday sees a packed slate with 10 games on the board, nine of which have 5.5 goal totals. The loner of the bunch is the Detroit Red Wings at New Jersey Devils, which sits at 5.

Canucks deal G Luongo to Panthers

Goaltender Roberto Luongo is going back to the Florida Panthers after a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday for center Shawn Matthias and goalie Jacob Markstrom.

Luongo, 34, was with the Panthers for five years earlier his career. This season, he has posted a 19-16-6 record with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 42 games for the Canucks.

The three-time All-Star, who asked to be traded, joins veteran Tim Thomas as the Panthers' top goaltenders. Thomas was with Boston in 2011 when the Bruins beat Luongo and the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Luongo's contract has eight years remaining and runs through the 2021-22 season. The contract's initial value was $64 million.

Luongo posted an image of a palm tree on his Twitter account shortly before the trade became public on Tuesday afternoon.

The 26-year-old Matthias has nine goals and seven assists in 59 games this season.

Markstrom, 24, has posted a 1-6 record with a 3.52 goals-against average in 12 games. He was considered the Panthers' top goaltending prospect.

Luongo's departure leaves the Canucks' goaltending job to Eddie Lack, who started in place of Luongo in Sunday's Heritage Classid game, and possibly Markstrom.
