Blackhawks at Sharks: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks (-110, 5.5)

The San Jose Sharks hope to solve their scoring woes by flipping the page on the calendar. San Jose looks to begin February with a jolt after ending January with a fizzle as it kicks off a four-game homestand against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. The Sharks have followed a six-game winning streak with a three-game slide during which they have scored a total of one goal.

After being blanked by Los Angeles and Edmonton, San Jose was shut out for two periods at Calgary on Thursday before finally scoring in the opening minute of the third in a 4-1 loss. Chicago continues its seven-game road trip after splitting the first two contests. The Blackhawks dropped a 5-4 overtime decision in Calgary on Tuesday before scoring five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 triumph at Vancouver the following night.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NHLN, CSN (Chicago), CSN California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (33-10-13): Wednesday's victory was the 693rd regular-season win of Joel Quenneville's coaching career, moving him past Dick Irvin for third place on the all-time list. He is less than 100 triumphs away from passing Al Arbour (782) for the second spot behind Scotty Bowman (1,244). Chicago snapped a four-game winless streak with the victory over the Canucks and improved to 5-3-6 over its last 14 contests.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (34-15-6): San Jose's offensive struggles go back to earlier this month, as the club has scored fewer than three goals in regulation eight times in its last 12 games. The Sharks have been shut out three times in that stretch and held to one goal on three other occasions. "It's a big concern of ours right now," coach Todd McLellan said. "In our last eight games, we've only scored 13 goals, and 10 of them have come from three players."

    TRENDS:

    * Home team is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings.
    * Over is 4-0 in Blackhawks last four vs. Pacific.
    * Blackhawks are 1-4 in their last five road games.
    * Sharks are 6-2 in their last eight vs. Central.

    OVERTIME:

    1. Chicago earned three points in the first two contests of the three-game season series, posting a 5-1 victory on Nov. 17 before dropping a 3-2 decision in a shootout on Jan. 5 - both at home.

    2. Blackhawks RW Marian Hossa has scored seven goals over his last seven contests.

    3. Sharks RW Eriah Hayes scored the team's lone goal Thursday, his first in 13 NHL games.

Red Wings at Capitals: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Washington Capitals (-130, 5.5)

The Detroit Red Wings have collected points in four of their last five games (3-1-1) while the Washington Capitals are venturing in the other direction after dropping nine of 11 (2-6-3) to plummet into seventh place in the congested Metropolitan Division. The Red Wings look to complete a home-and-home sweep on Sunday afternoon when they visit the Capitals. Patrick Eaves scored in the seventh round of the shootout and Jimmy Howard denied all seven attempts as Detroit skated to a 4-3 victory on Friday.

The road hasn't been kind for the Red Wings, who have been shut out in three consecutive contests away from Joe Louis Arena. Detroit suffered 1-0 setbacks at Anaheim on Jan. 12 and the New York Rangers four days later before losing a 5-0 decision to Philadelphia on Tuesday. Making the Red Wings' task all the more difficult could be the return of Washington defenseman Mike Green (concussion-like symptoms), who sat out Friday's tilt but returned to practice on Saturday without issue.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, NHLCA

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (24-19-11): After welcoming the returns of captain Henrik Zetterberg (back) and Howard (knee) on Friday, Detroit now turns its undivided attention to the long-term absence of Pavel Datsyuk. "I don't know," coach Mike Babcock told MLive.com when asked if the Russian superstar was close to returning. "I'm just like (the reporters). I just keep asking." Datsyuk has been sidelined since the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (24-22-9): Joel Ward was credited with the game-tying goal with seven seconds left in regulation after deflecting captain Alex Ovechkin's blast. Washington is not without its own injury concerns as Brooks Laich exited Friday's tilt with tightness in his groin. Laich did not practice on Saturday and is questionable to face the Red Wings.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings in Washington.
              * Red Wings are 1-6 in their last seven games following a win.
              * Capitals are 2-8 in their last 10 vs. Eastern Conference.
              * Under is 4-0 in Capitals last four home games.

              OVERTIME:

              1. Detroit C Gustav Nyquist has five goals and three assists in his last seven games.

              2. Washington C Nicklas Backstrom had an assist on Friday, but hasn't scored a goal since Jan. 10.

              3. The teams wrap up their season series on Sunday after splitting 4-3 shootout victories in their previous two contests.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (-104, 5)

Although the Chicago Blackhawks have dropped five of their last six contests (1-2-3), they have a chance to get back on track and complete a three-game regular-season sweep on Monday when they visit the struggling Los Angeles Kings. Brandon Saad scored his third goal in two contests in Chicago's 2-1 shootout loss to San Jose on Saturday and netted the lone tally in the team's 1-0 triumph over Los Angeles on Dec. 30. Rookie Antti Rantta turned aside 26 shots in the latter contest to register his first career shutout and made 21 saves in a 3-1 victory over the Kings on Dec. 15.

Los Angeles' scoring troubles continued as it was shut out for the third time in five games and fell for the eighth time in nine outings (1-7-1) with a 2-0 setback to Philadelphia on Saturday. "You have to score to win," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "You can't get frustrated. You can't allow guys who are playing well to get frustrated. You have to see if they can work their way out of it."

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (33-10-14): For all of its success, reigning Stanley Cup champion Chicago continues to struggle when games venture past regulation. The Blackhawks fell for the 14th time - and 10th in 11 outings - under such circumstances with their setback on Saturday. "You need to come up with a save if you want to win the game in a shootout," Corey Crawford told ESPN Chicago after permitting all three Sharks to convert in the bonus format.

ABOUT THE KINGS (30-21-6): Los Angeles has scored just three goals in the last six contests - and Anze Kopitar has been credited with them all. Jeff Carter has been cooled by the stretch after enjoying a four-game goal streak. Speaking of former Flyers, Mike Richards continues to sputter and has scored just once in his past 32 games.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
                      * Blackhawks are 1-5 in their last six road games.
                      * Under is 11-2-4 in Kings last 17 home games.
                      * Kings are 1-6 in their last seven vs. Central.

                      OVERTIME:

                      1. Chicago has killed off its last 22 consecutive short-handed opportunities.

                      2. Los Angeles has limped on its power play, converting just 1-of-25 chances over the past seven games.

                      3. The Kings have lost 15 of their last 20 contests (5-13-2) following an impressive 25-8-4 start to the season.

                            Monday, February 3

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week's hottest and coldest NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2

                            Hot team

                            Calgary Flames (3-0 SU)

Flames fans can't be blamed for wondering if their team would ever end up on this list. But a perfect five-game home stand has Calgary going into the first full week of February as the hottest team in the league. The Flames wrapped up the unbeaten home stretch with a 5-4 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks, a 4-1 triumph over the San Jose Sharks and a 4-3 OT decision over the Minnesota Wild. Goal-starved Calgary scored 21 goals in the five victories and will try to carry that momentum into the start of a three-game road trip in Montreal Tuesday.

                            Cold team

                            New York Islanders (0-3 SU)

Every time the Islanders appear to be making positive strides, they hit a rough stretch, and last week was no different. The New York offense managed just five combined goals in a loss to the Boston Bruins and back-to-back defeats at the hands of the rival New York Rangers, extending the club's overall losing streak to five games. The final three games before the Olympic break offer little hope of a bounceback, as the Islanders visit high-scoring Washington before hosting red-hot Calgary and powerhouse Colorado.

                            Best Over play

                            Washington Capitals (4-0 O/U)

Watching the Capitals certainly hasn't been dull. At least, not over the past seven days. After playing four straight Unders, Washington became the top Over play of the week, recording a 5-4 overtime win over the Buffalo Sabres and a 6-5 OT triumph over the Detroit Red Wings bookending a 5-2 loss to Columbus and a 4-3 shootout loss to Detroit in the opener of their back-to-back. Superstar winger Alex Ovechkin remains one of the most dangerous players in hockey, leading the league with 40 goals and making the Capitals an Over threat each time out.

                            Best Under play

                            Montreal Canadiens (0-3-1 O/U)

Montreal has returned to form after playing three straight Overs earlier in the month, going 0-4-2 O/U in its last six games. While that's partially a reflection on the struggles of the Canadiens' offense, it's also a tremendous relief to fans of goaltender Carey Price, who struggled mightily at the beginning of January but has fared much better of late. Price earned the shutout in a 3-0 win over Carolina before dropping consecutive 2-1 decisions to Tampa Bay and Winnipeg. Backup Peter Budaj was also sharp in his only game of the week, a 4-1 triumph over Boston.

                            Surveying the schedule

The Winnipeg Jets have defied the naysayers, winning eight of their last 10 games to propel themselves into the conversation in the crowded Western Conference playoff standings. The next week will go a long way in determining whether the Jets, who have thrived under new head coach Paul Maurice, are a legitimate threat for a postseason berth or simply a team on a brief roll. Winnipeg faces a tough task in the final week before the break, playing road games in Carolina, Washington and St. Louis - teams that are a combined 49-24-11 at home.
