    To Shorty

I want to thank you for your many great posts you have made.
I like what you say and you have a very good way the way
you write it and the good humor you put in them also. I look
foward to your basketball picks and I 100% agree with you
that there are a number of people who post on this site that
are much better than those self proclaimed national
handicappers. I am just so angry at them because I know they
are such lying frauds out to rip people off. You are right it
needs to be stated so people will know what they are about
and won't get taken in by them.

I just want to make it clear all of my comments I have made
in this thread is directed at these nationally know handicappers
and not at any of the people who post their plays on this fourm.
Most of the people who post their plays here do very well and
they prove what they can do by themselves and that they don't
need anyone to pick games for them. You and they rest of
the posters here are a very good example for other people to
follow and it is exciting to follow all of you.

shorty, I do intend to continue this thread. That is why I posted first thing this morning regarding some of the service plays from the last night.

I think this thread is more important than the service request threads. How many times have we seen a newby post their first post in the request thread asking for shitty picks. In the service request thread a member asked for Carlo Campanella 4th GOSsomething this week. He's 1-3. I don't have a problem with any member asking for any service's selections. It's not for me to judge. What I am trying to do is make that member more aware of the quality of picks they are asking for.

A member posted yesterday that Big Al is "VERY GOOD" in the basketball when if fact he is under 50% in CBB and 55% in the NBA. At 55% you make a small profit but that profit disappears if you are paying for their picks.

Almost everynight someone is asking for Wayne Root's selections. People visit his website. He makes no mention of his previous nights plays or his record. Why? At least Big Al has the balls to put his record on his web site.

on this site, most of us will post our records and i ASSURE you we are all honest........you check our records, you follow our picks and you make the decision.......truth is, i have been here for about 3 months now and like normal gamblers, sometimes we get hot and sometimes we care cold, BUT THE PEOPLE POSTING PICKS IN THE NON-SERVICE AREAS ARE HONEST

if you see a game of the week, game of the month, or game of the year, it will be the only game of the month that month, game of the year that year and so on and so forth.......

as far as services go, they will have some form of a 'game of the month' every day..........just look at the services thread tomorrow and you will see 100 games of the month, week and year.....some will deceive you by using terms such as 'conference game of the year', or 'revenge game of the year', so they can justify haveing 100 games of the year............

there are services that are at least honest, such as phil steele, big al (sort of), maybe a few others..............ALWAYS BEWARE of services who have multiple handicappers because they will make sure they are giving both sides of the same game........be careful when someone says they have a play out of a 30-4 system.......anybody can come up with something like that and it looks great but is a lie

in the non-service thread's you will still see a variey of postings, but for the college sports, you will see a lot of consistency and much less of people of different sides although it is inevitable that good cappers will be on different sides.......not to mention, instead of just lying to you, a lot of us will give facts and reasoning of why we like a game and help you make your decision an intelligent one

            good luck
            keep it up frank
            b

I would add to the list of free and good consistent cappers at bettorschat Poboy and Goldvike.
ps I better not type too loud as Big Al, who allegedly only gets 4 hours a sleep a day, may be trying to get in his sleep before the games start, and I don't want to wake him.
If Big Al doesn't do well with selling his picks, perhaps he can try selling/marketing this remarkable product which allows one to need only four hours of sleep .:D

Taking advice from a handicapper is a lot like taking advice from a stockbroker, the buyer has to be aware. For my money, I'd rather be the one doing the research/analysis and win or lose based on my own judgement whether I'm gambling on sports or buying stocks. To me, most gamblers lose money because of either poor money management or they follow the crowd and bet the team that can't/shouldn't/won't lose. If you can't make a serious argument for either team being capable of winning, then you are blind to this game and shouldn't play it.

Most handicappers do not document their picks, I'd say maybe up to 85%. If you are going to take the advice of any handicapper, make sure that they document all of their picks. Some reliable sports monitors are TrackPicks, The Sports Monitor, Sports Watch and Big Guy. If a tout does not monitor their picks, or is advertising a high winning percentage (anything in excess of 65%) run away with your wallet in your hand because more than likely they are a scam!

As for the large handicappers, some are huge marketing operations (Fiest & Co., Root) that give the appearance of being legitamate because they are on tv, radio and/or publish magazines and newsletters. If a guy needs your phone number or starts making unsolicited phone calls looking for your business, then there is a problem. More than likely they are playing both sides of a game if they are giving out free picks, knowing that half the people who called will be receptive to their sales pitch after delivering a winning pick.

Big Al has a great record in the past, but has really struggled the last few years for whatever reason. Phil Steele has been solid in the NFL but struggled in College football this year. I'm not a system or angles player, so I could care less if a system is 17-0 like Marc Lawrence markets, because to me each game is a random independent event, but Lawrence has a record of producing winners over the years and uses that angle to grab customers. Pay attention to how touts do in each sport, because some touts are obviously stronger in certain sports than others.

Myself, out of encouragement from my friends and my prowness for picking winners in college football, I started my own service in August. All of my picks are documented and if I don't deliver a Net Winner (including vig) I refund my customers their money (let's see some stockbroker refund their commissions after a stock flops) because to me that seems to be the honorable thing to do.

Guys, my point is, if you have the time to do your own research, looking at consensus sites and forums, that is the best route (I think it is safe to assume that most of the users of Bettors Chat are serious about gambling and have the neccessary time to handicap). Develop a sound money management technique that works for you and don't over-extend yourself.

                Good Luck to all!

FootballJunky, nice informative post. I agree with most you posted. However, I have to disagree with you wholeheartedly about Marc Lawrence. I was a client of Marc's about 10 years ago. He was very mediocre in BB. He was horrible in baseball.

I was out of the gambling game for 8 years until 6 months ago. I've been following Marc's selection this past football season. Once again he's been mediocre. Any capper who doesn't post their record on their website is a scam. No where on Marc's site does he state his record. Why?

You are right, Marc has no mention of his record on his website, but when you are selling "never lost" angles, you can't show a 50% winning percentage!

I know Marc Lawrence, Phil Steele and Big Al use The Sports Monitor of Oklahoma (www.sportsservices.net) to document their picks. I looked at them to monitor my picks, but I had a few concerns using them, although I have never heard a bad word about them. My concerns were that the site seemed to be updated maybe twice a week instead of daily, the site doesn't show what the actual picks were and it only lists those touts with a winning pick percentage.

I use TrackPicks to monitor my picks. Ten minutes after a game begins, any games that are selected by each handicapper are posted. The handicapper records are updated daily and ALL handicappers records are shown, but it seems like touts that have poor records drop off and probably go to another sports monitor, if they even use one at all. Heck, I mistakenly choose an Over when I meant to hit the Under button for a Monday Night game earlier this season, and I delivered an Under pick to my Members and could do nothing to get TrackPicks to change my mistake, even including providing email documentation and member information who received the pick for them to independently review. That's pretty good integrity on their part! It made me take notice to make sure that I have selected the right team in the future!

Good luck tomorrow, we have a huge basketball card (80 plus games with lines) plus the two Divisional Playoff Games so it should be exciting day!

FYI - Take a look at the Georgetown/West Virginia game. West Virginia has suspended their leading scorer. I had West Virginia capped as a favorite of -1 before the player suspension.
