Angel Hernandez and the best 'over' umps in baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MLB umpire Angel Hernandez added to his record as the best ‘over’ ump in baseball, calling the balls and strikes during the Chicago Cubs’ 7-6 extra-innings win over the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, which played over the 8-run total.

That improved the ‘over’ to 17-5 over/under when Hernandez is behind home plate this season, watching scores top the total in 77.3 percent of those games.

The 22-year MLB veteran has watched an average of 10.1 runs make it to the scoreboard in his 22 appearances as home plate ump, including 2.91 home runs in those games – highest among MLB umpire. Wednesday’s game featured two home runs.

Hernandez isn’t the only ump trending toward the over in 2013. Here’s a look at some of the other masked men helping MLB scores find their way above the number:

              Ed Hickox (13-5 O/U, 10.4 rpg)
              Jerry Layne (10-4 O/U, 8.9 rpg)
              Tim Timmons (13-7 O/U, 9.1 rpg)
              Chris Guccione (13-7 O/U, 9.5 rpg)
              Mike Everitt (14-8 O/U, 9.7 rpg)
              Cory Blaser (14-8 O/U, 10 rpg)

                          • Preview: Rangers (56-46) at Indians (53-48)
                            Game: 1
                            Venue: Progressive Field
                            Date: July 26, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

While Corey Kluber may not be a household name, he has certainly established himself in the Cleveland Indians' rotation.

The Texas Rangers became all too familiar with him last month.

Kluber tries to continue his recent home dominance Friday night when the Indians open a three-game set against the slumping Rangers.

After going 2-5 with a 5.14 ERA in 12 starts toward the end of last year, Kluber (7-5, 3.69 ERA) has shined since taking over for injured starter Brett Myers. The right-hander has been especially good at home of late, going 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA over a five-start stretch.

"It's because of guys like him - you've heard me refer to the glass being half full a lot of times, and that's why. We're trying to fight it out in this division with guys like Corey and we're excited about it," manager Terry Francona, whose team is three games behind AL Central-leading Detroit, told the Indians' official website.

"He's getting better, it seems like, almost every start, whether he's learning something or gaining experience. And, in the meantime, he's winning games."

Kluber allowed three hits and struck out seven over five innings in Saturday's 3-2 loss at Minnesota, extending his scoreless streak to 12 2-3 innings before leaving with tightness in his left hip.

"It's something I can pitch through," he said. "It was just a precautionary move."

Kluber was at his best in a 5-2 win at Texas on June 11, yielding one run and six hits in a career high-tying eight innings.

"We kind of talked about how they're a really aggressive team," said Kluber, who grew up in the Arlington area. "We kind of used that against them a little bit. I was expanding on them and getting them to chase some pitches, and getting soft contact."

Kluber would appear to have another favorable matchup against a Rangers team that has dropped nine of 12. Texas (56-46) has scored just 28 runs during that stretch while going 13 for 79 (.165) with runners in scoring position.

The Rangers went 0 for 4 in such situations Thursday in a 2-0 loss to the New York Yankees in which they were limited to seven singles.

Mitch Moreland has one hit in his last 18 at_bats and is mired in a 12-for-72 funk. Nelson Cruz, who is 4 for his last 27, is hitting .140 with no homers in his last 15 games versus Cleveland.

The Indians (53-48) return home after concluding a 2-4 road trip with Wednesday's 10-1 win over Seattle. Michael Bourn hit his first career grand slam and Asdrubal Cabrera, who also went deep, had two hits, three RBIs and four runs.

"That was much-needed and a good day," Francona said. "It's just nice to bounce back, because we had a couple tough ones. It was good to see our guys see some results."

Cleveland will try to keep things going against Martin Perez (3-3, 3.40), who has allowed nine runs in 12 innings while losing back-to-back starts. The left-hander, whose lone appearance versus the Indians consisted of a four-pitch walk last September, gave up four runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 4-2 defeat to Baltimore on Sunday.

While the Rangers have won 14 of 18 at Progressive Field, the Indians are 28-13 at home since April 30 - the AL's second-best record over that stretch.

                            • Preview: Mets (45-53) at Nationals (49-53)
                              Game: 1
                              Venue: Nationals Park

Establishing himself as one of baseball's most dominant pitchers, Matt Harvey is obviously a big part of the New York Mets' future.

They once had high hopes for former top prospect Jenrry Mejia, too.

Mejia is set to make his season debut in Game 1 of Friday's day-night doubleheader against the host Washington Nationals before Harvey gets the ball in Game 2.

Mejia, who struggled through a disappointing 2010 rookie season and underwent Tommy John surgery in 2011, was placed on the disabled list this spring with inflammation in his elbow. The right-hander, though, will get another chance to shine after going 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two starts at Double-A Binghamton.

Mejia went 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in three big league starts in September.

"We've tried to let him know or wanted him to understand - what he's hearing today about (Zack) Wheeler, about Harvey was all about Jenrry Mejia three years ago," manager Terry Collins told the Mets' official website. "Sky's the limit, plus stuff, power arm - all those things, and he's only 23 years old."

The 24-year-old Harvey (8-2, 2.23 ERA), meanwhile, leads the NL with 157 strikeouts and is 5-0 on the road. In his first appearance since starting the All-Star game, Harvey beat Philadelphia on Sunday when he allowed three hits and struck out 10 in seven innings in a 5-0 win.

"That might be the best stuff I've seen him have," Collins said. "What I really liked (was that) in the middle of the game, he was trying to pitch to contact to have some easy innings. And he still threw the ball by some guys."

The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in two starts versus Washington (49-53) this year. He allowed three hits and struck out 11 over seven innings of one-run ball but didn't receive a decision in a 6-4 loss June 28.

Bryce Harper, Jayson Werth and Kurt Suzuki are hitless in a combined 20 at_bats against Harvey.

After missing Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh with left knee soreness, Harper went 3 for 5 with a walkoff two-run homer in Thursday's 9-7 win over the Pirates.

"Great to get the `W' today. We really needed it," said Harper, whose team snapped a season-high six-game losing streak. "Hopefully this one will carry on into tomorrow and the next day."

The Nationals have taken 22 of 30 from New York, and they will be looking for a bounce-back performance from Jordan Zimmermann (12-5, 3.01) in Game 1. The right-hander had gone 14-0 with a 2.60 ERA in his previous 22 home starts dating to last year before surrendering seven runs in a career-low two innings Sunday in a 9-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"You can be on the top of the world and then have a bad start, but what Jordan's so good at is kind of putting it in the past and coming out the next time and doing his job," third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. "I don't see why the next time he wouldn't go back to what he's been all year."

Zimmermann is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in his last seven starts versus New York (45-53). Daniel Murphy and Ike Davis are a combined 2 for 29 against him since 2012.

Ross Ohlendorf (2-0, 2.03), who gets the ball in the nightcap, allowed two runs in six innings after replacing Zimmermann on Sunday. The right-hander won his only start this year, yielding one run and two hits in six innings in a 5-1 win at Colorado on June 12.

Ohlendorf has allowed 16 runs in four games - one start - spanning eight innings against the Mets.

New York has won four of six after beating Atlanta 7-4 on Thursday. Murphy, David Wright, Marlon Byrd and John Buck went a combined 10 for 20 with six RBIs.

"Guys are swinging the sticks like crazy right now. It's fun," Wheeler said after earning the victory.

The Mets have averaged 5.0 runs during a 13-6 stretch on the road.

                              • Preview: Red Sox (61-42) at Orioles (57-46)
                                Game: 1
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                                Date: July 26, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

While the Boston Red Sox should be happy to see one red-hot club leave town, they'll now hit the road to face another team that has given them a difficult time.

The Baltimore Orioles hope to end a three-game losing streak and beat Boston for the sixth time in eight meetings Friday night in the opener of a three-game series.

After dropping two of three in their rain-shortened series, the Red Sox (61-42) had their AL East lead shrink to one-half over surging Tampa Bay.

Boston, which has been alone atop the division since May 27, remained in first place for at least one more day when Thursday's finale was rained out. That contest has been rescheduled for Monday night.

The Red Sox have struggled at the plate, batting .225 while dropping five of eight. They could have a tough time getting back on track since they're hitting .194 against the Orioles.

Jacoby Ellsbury (5 for 30), Dustin Pedroia (4 for 22), Stephen Drew (2 for 17) and David Ortiz (2 for 16) haven't fared well versus Baltimore. Pedroia is also 1 for 19 over the past five games overall.

The Orioles (57-46), four games behind the Red Sox, hope to avoid their fourth straight loss after dropping the final three in Kansas City.

"We've been gone 11 days and everybody is looking forward to getting back home," manager Buck Showalter said.

Showalter's club appears to have a decent shot to bounce back in the opener of a nine-game homestand with Chris Tillman (12-3, 3.84 ERA) on the mound.

The right-hander, who looks to become the first Oriole to win 13 games since Erik Bedard in 2007, has limited opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of nine starts. He gave up two runs over eight-plus innings in a 4-2 win at Texas on Sunday.

"Chris does things the right way,' Showalter said. "Usually there's good karma when he pitches.'

That has been the case when Tillman has faced the Red Sox. He's 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA in his last six starts against them after allowing three hits over six-plus innings in a 2-0 win June 14 to help the Orioles take three of four at Camden Yards.

Boston counters with John Lackey (7-7, 2.95), who had his start pushed back due to Thursday's rainout.

"Keeping four of the five guys on their normal turn, despite John and Ryan (Dempster) getting an extra day, and just felt like (Jon) Lester and (Felix) Doubront in (their) slots, I felt like it was right,' manager John Farrell said.

Lackey gets the chance to improve his 12-4 record and 3.31 ERA in 20 career starts against the Orioles. He earned Boston's only win in last month's series in Baltimore, giving up two runs in seven innings of a 5-4 win June 15.

The right-hander has lost two of his last three starts overall, but posted a 3.54 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 20 1-3 innings while the offense failed to give him any support in those defeats.

Manny Machado is 14 for 32 (.438) while hitting safely in all seven meetings against Boston, but is 1 for 16 in his last four games overall.

Teammate Chris Davis has yet to homer in seven games following the All-Star break, but he's hit seven in his last 10 versus Boston. Davis is 6 for 28 (.214) with 13 strikeouts since the break.

Catcher Matt Wieters has five straight multi-hit games, going 11 for 21 during this hot stretch.

The Orioles have won eight of 10 at home against the Red Sox.
