MLB Top 5: Best left-handed money pitchers in baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a look at the year-to-date moneyline returns for the Top 5 left-handers in the majors through Monday's games according to ***********'s money pitchers rankings.

Patrick Corbin, Arizona Diamondbacks (11-1, +14.45 units)

He’s not only the top left-handed pitcher this season when it comes to his team’s return on the moneyline, but he is the No.1 pitcher overall with a +14.45 units return through his first 19 starts. Corbin boasts an 11-1 win/loss mark and an overall ERA of 2.35. The Diamondbacks have gone an impressive 17-2 in those 19 starts and have also been profitable on the total as well recently with six of his last eight starts staying under the closing number.

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (14-3, +10.41 units)

The Rays boast a team record of 16-4 in Moore’s first 19 starts this year. His personal record is 14-3, and he has now won his last six starts after the Rays posted a 3-0 win over Boston Monday. This followed a rough patch in mid June in which Moore lost three consecutive starts that cost -4.00 units on the moneyline. However, he has appeared to have regained that winning form in his last few outings. The total has stayed under in four of his last five starts.

Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles Dodgers (8-3, +7.60 units)

The South Korean lefty is 8-3 in 19 starts with the Dodgers going 13-6 over the same stretch of games. He has just two wins in his last eight starts along with a loss and five no-decisions, but the Dodgers won six of those games. The total has gone over in six of his last seven outings after Los Angeles outscored its opponents 48-30 during this run, including a 14-5 win over Toronto Monday.

Jorge De La Rosa, Colorado Rockies (9-5, +5.97 units)

De La Rosa is coming off a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs this past Friday, but his team lost 3-1 as a -150 home favorite to drop his total return on the year. He has made a total of 20 starts this season, and the Rockies have gone 13-7 in those games. De La Rosa is 9-5 on the year and 3-2 in his last 10 starts. Colorado has gone 6-4 in those 10 games with a +1.08 return on the money line.

Dallas Keuchel, Houston Astros (4-5, +5.10 units)

Much of Keuchel’s profits have to do with the high moneylines the Astros routinely attract as the worst team in baseball. He has made 13 starts this season. And while he has a personal record of 4-5, his team is 6-7 in those games. That is quite an accomplishment when you consider that Houston is 33-65 and down almost 10 units on the year.

Mariners keep cashing in, win eight in row
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to eight games with a victory over the Cleveland Indians Tuesday night, raking in $679.53 for M’s backers wagering $100 on each game during this stretch.

Seattle, which is 48-52 for -0.99 units on the season, defeated Cleveland 4-3 thanks to a ninth-inning rundown that cleared runners at the corners and a strikeout to end the Tribe’s late-game threat.

The Mariners started this winning streak before the All-Star break, sweeping the rival Los Angeles Angles in three games. Since returning to play, Seattle has won three straight on the road against the Houston Astros and has won the first two meeting with Cleveland at home.

Overall, the M’s are 13-5 in their last 18 games going back to July 2. Seattle has jumped on the back of its bats in this span, averaging six runs per game – nearly two more than its season average – and hitting a collective .277 with 29 home runs in July.

The Mariners send left-hander Joe Saunders (9-8, 4.28 ERA) to the hill for the finale with Cleveland Wednesday. Oddsmakers have set Seattle as a -109 home favorite with the total at 8.5 runs.

                          • Preview: Braves (57-44) at Mets (44-53)
                            Game: 4
                            Venue: Citi Field
                            Date: July 25, 2013 12:10 PM EDT

Alex Wood is trying to show the Atlanta Braves he's capable of earning a spot in their banged-up rotation.

Zack Wheeler is just trying to show the New York Mets some consistency.

A day after the Braves lost Tim Hudson to a broken ankle, Wood gets the ball in place of another injured starter as the Braves attempt to solve Wheeler in the finale of this four-game series at Citi Field on Thursday.

Atlanta (57-44) has been without sinkerballer Brandon Beachy (Tommy John surgery) all season, and they've lost two more starters in Hudson and Paul Maholm (wrist contusion) this week.

Hudson became the latest injured Brave during Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Mets (44-53). The veteran right-hander was covering first on a close play in the eighth inning when New York's Eric Young stepped on his ankle, resulting in a gruesome injury in which Hudson collapsed to the ground before being carted off.

"It's terrible," second baseman Dan Uggla said. "That's a big blow."

Hudson's injury, which could rule him out for the season, may put more of an onus on Wood (0-2, 2.45 ERA) to claim a spot in the rotation. The 22-year-old rookie left-hander was already scheduled to replace Maholm, who was placed on the disabled Monday.

Wood, however, will need to show improvement since he was charged with a 4-3 loss to the Mets in his only career start June 18. He gave up one run with five strikeouts and three walks in three innings while throwing 73 pitches in the first game of a doubleheader.

"It's his second start in the big leagues," manager Fredi Gonzalez told the team's official website. "I think this will be a little more comfortable start."

Wood's other 15 games for the Braves came in relief, but he's 5-2 with a 1.31 ERA in 11 starts in the minors. He allowed one run and three hits with five strikeouts while hitting two batters in five innings for Triple-A Gwinnett last Thursday, an outing designed to prepare him for this opportunity.

The Mets will counter Wood with Wheeler (3-1, 3.58), who is facing the Braves for the first time since beating them in the second game of the June 18 twinbill. The 23-year-old right-hander from nearby Smyrna, Ga., was terrific in Atlanta, striking out seven in six scoreless innings while walking five and giving up four hits in a 6-1 win to help the Mets complete the sweep.

Wheeler, though, hasn't been very sharp in two home starts, going 0-1 while surrendering seven runs and 13 hits - two homers - while fanning 10 and walking four in 9 1-3 innings.

"You're in the big leagues, you want consistency," Wheeler told the team's official website. "You're a starting pitcher, you want consistency."

Marlon Byrd is 10 for 27 (.370) over his last seven games with Atlanta, and his two hits Wednesday continued his surge this month. He's batting .329 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 19 games.

The right fielder had an RBI single in his only at-bat versus Wood on June 18.

Uggla has a .419 average over his last nine visits to Flushing and is 4 for 7 with a homer and three RBIs in the past two games. He doubled in three at_bats versus Wheeler.

                            • Preview: Pirates (60-39) at Nationals (48-53)
                              Game: 4
                              Venue: Nationals Park
                              Date: July 25, 2013 12:35 PM EDT

Even if Gio Gonzalez can continue his outstanding pitching, the Washington Nationals' slumping offense hasn't shown it can provide enough runs to end the team's lengthy slide.

The Pittsburgh Pirates hope to take advantage of those troubles and complete their first four-game road sweep of the Washington/Montreal franchise in 25 years Thursday.

Washington (48-53), the defending NL East champion, had its late rally fall short against a Pittsburgh team playing without injured All-Star closer Jason Grilli (forearm) in Wednesday's 4-2 loss.

The struggling Nationals had only two hits over the first eight innings before managing three in the ninth, including Jayson Werth's two-run home run, but still lost their season-worst sixth straight contest.

While Werth is 5 for 12 with five homers and eight RBIs in his last four games, Washington has gone 2 for 35 (.057) with runners in scoring position and totaled 13 runs during its skid.

Star left fielder Bryce Harper (knee) and shortstop Ian Desmond (hand blister) missed Wednesday's contest, but could be back as the Nationals look to avoid their longest losing streak since an eight-game slide from Aug. 28 - Sept. 5, 2009.

"We need to win some games,' Wednesday's losing pitcher Stephen Strasburg said. "It's getting to the point where our back's against the wall.'

Gonzalez (7-3, 2.89 ERA) seems poised to keep them close since he's 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his last nine starts.

The left-hander matched a career high with 11 strikeouts and yielded four hits over six shutout innings, but was given only one run of support in Washington's eventual 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

He'll try to build on his 2-0 record with a 2.84 ERA in his fourth career start against the Pirates (60-39) after surrendering two runs and five hits over six innings in a 6-2 victory at Pittsburgh on May 5.

Starling Marte took Gonzalez deep in that meeting, though he enters this meeting 1 for 21 in his last five games.

Following his own 1-for-21 stretch, teammate Pedro Alvarez may be heating up after going 3 for 7 with two home runs in the last two games of this series.

He'll try to help the Pirates win their fifth straight and claim their first four-game road sweep in this rivalry since June 23-26, 1988.

A.J. Burnett (4-7, 3.05) has gone 1-5 with a 3.39 ERA over his last 10 starts thanks in part to a Pittsburgh offense that has given him just 19 runs of support over that span. That's been a common theme for Burnett - his 3.07 run-support average ranks among the lowest in the major leagues.

The right-hander allowed four runs in the first inning but settled down and struck out eight in a 5-4 loss at Cincinnati on Saturday. He yielded five runs - two earned - and a season-high 10 hits over 5 2-3 innings.

Only two of his 15 career starts versus Washington/Montreal have come within the past two seasons. Burnett has struck out 19 while going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 15 innings in those outings - both Pittsburgh victories.

While Burnett has made things tough on Ryan Zimmerman (0 for 9) and Desmond (0 for 7), Adam LaRoche is 3 for 6 with a home run since 2010.

Strong pitching has keyed the Texas Rangers' success against the New York Yankees this year.

Derek Holland provided one of those performances, but doing it again at home may be an issue.

Holland attempts to win there for the first time in nearly two months Thursday, when the Rangers try to take this four-game set from the Yankees.

Texas (56-45) has won four of six meetings with New York, thanks in large part to the pitching staff's 2.35 ERA while limiting the Yankees to a .192 batting average.

The starters have been particularly dominant in those victories, compiling a 0.98 ERA. Matt Garza turned in the latest gem - allowing an unearned run in 7 1-3 innings of Wednesday's 3-1 win - in his Rangers debut after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago Cubs earlier this week.

The Rangers are hoping Holland (8-5, 3.10 ERA) can follow up that effort. He tossed a two-hitter in a 2-0 win at New York on June 27.

That was a stark contrast from the left-hander's previous eight regular-season meetings with the Yankees, during which he went 0-5 with an 8.85 ERA, including 0-2 with a 10.29 ERA in three home games.

Holland hasn't won there since beating Kansas City on May 31.

He's 0-3 with a 4.81 ERA over his last four starts at Rangers Ballpark, but wasn't entirely to blame for Friday's 3-1 loss to Baltimore. He allowed three runs in eight innings, and the offense went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

"I thought he threw the ball extremely well. He certainly threw it well enough that on any other night he might have got a victory," manager Ron Washington said.

The Yankees (53-48) may not need much offense behind Hiroki Kuroda (9-6, 2.65), who is 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA over his last three starts.

The right-hander was sharp again in Saturday's 5-2 win at AL East-leading Boston, yielding two runs in seven innings.

"(Kuroda) had everything," manager Joe Girardi said. "His stuff was really crisp. He kept his pitch count down in the early innings. His stuff was really sharp."

Kuroda, though, has given up seven runs in 12 innings while losing his two career visits to Arlington, with the most recent coming on April 23, 2012.

He didn't get a decision against the Rangers on June 25, allowing three runs - two earned - with six strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings of a 4-3 home win.

Kuroda has allowed A.J. Pierzynski to go 2 for 6 with a homer off him over the past three seasons. The catcher may be back in the lineup since he's 4 for 12 in this series after connecting for an RBI single in the first before a go-ahead, solo homer in the sixth Wednesday.

Brett Gardner is giving the Yankees some punch in the leadoff spot, going 9 for 20 over the past five games. He's a career .326 hitter against the Rangers, but has a .400 average with eight runs over the past 10 meetings.

Vernon Wells hasn't come close to being that effective, hitting .167 in 15 games against Texas. He's struck out five times while failing to get a hit in 11 at_bats versus Holland over the last two seasons.
