Pittsburgh Pirates still top of the money standing
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to exert their dominance in our money rankings. The Bucs currently sit atop the league up +25.12 units so far in 2013.

The Pirates have not finished on the plus side of the money standings since the 2003 season when they finished a pedestrian +0.85 units. They flirted with finishing on the plus side of things the past couple of seasons but have been cellar dwellers most seasons in between.

The Washington Nationals defeated the Pirates by a score of 9-7 Thursday. Pittsburgh currently sports a 60-40 record following the loss and are 2.5 games behind the N.L. Central leading St. Louis Cardinals.

The Miami Marlins host the Pirates for a three-game weekend series which opens Friday. Jeff Locke (9-2, 2.11 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Pirates against Miami's Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 3.28)

Texas Rangers best 'under' play in baseball
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Texas Rangers continue to lead the MLB 'under' standings as they are now owners of a 36-60-6 o/u record.

Texas and the New York Yankees played under the 7.5 closing total Thursday afternoon after the Yanks clipped the Rangers by a score of 2-0.

The Rangers have gone over the total just once in their previous 12 games and are 1-9-2 o/u in that span.

Any $100 bettor would be up $733.65 if they had wagered the 'under' in each of the Rangers' last 12 games.

The Cleveland Indians host the Rangers for a three-game weekend series which opens Friday. Texas' Martin Perez is scheduled to get the start against Cleveland's Corey Kluber.

                    • Saturday's FOX Tip Sheet

                      July 27, 2013

St. Louis at Atlanta - 3:05 p.m. ET (Game 2/3)

Teams Starting Pitchers Team Record (Away/Home) Current Form

                      St. Louis Cardinals J. Kelly (1-3, 3.88) 62-38 (30-21) 4-1 L5

                      Atlanta Braves J. Teherán (7-5, 3.25) 58-45 (32-15) 3-3 L6

                      Betting Notes

-- Atlanta beat St. Louis on Friday 4-1, which was the first meeting between the teams this season. In 2012, the Braves won five of seven against the Cardinals, including two of three at home.

-- The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Cardinals.

-- St. Louis will send Joe Kelly to the hill, who has started three games this season. The team has gone 2-1 with him on the mound.

-- The Braves counter with Julio Teheran and they haven’t won back-to-back games with him on the mound since May 9. Based on that trend and knowing the Braves won on Monday with Teheran starting, you would assume the Cards are the look.

-- Atlanta has lost Teheran’s last two starts at home but it is still 6-3 overall. The ‘under’ has gone 7-2 in Teheran’s home starts.

-- Atlanta is 17-16 in afternoon games, while St. Louis boasts a NL-best record of 21-11 in the daytime.

                      N.Y. Mets at Washington - 3:05 p.m. ET (Game 3/4)

Teams Starting Pitchers Team Record (Away/Home) Current Form

                      New York Mets D. Gee (7-7, 4.07) 46-54 (25-24) 7-4 L11 Road

                      Washington Nationals D. Haren (4-11, 5.79) 50-54 (29-25) 2-7 L9

                      Betting Notes

-- The two teams split a double-header yesterday with the Mets taking Game 1 (11-0) and the Nationals stealing Game 2 (2-1). The ‘under’ should’ve cashed in both games but New York exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth in its afternoon victory.

-- Including Friday’s outcomes, the two teams have split their 10 games this season. The ‘over’ has gone 6-4.

-- New York has gone 5-4 since the All-Star break. Washington has produced a 2-7 record since the break, which started with six straight losses, all at home too. The offense has been held to two runs or less in seven of the nine games.

-- The Mets have gone 10-10 overall with Dillon Gee on the mound and 1-1 since the All-Star break, with the ‘under’ cashing in both games. However, Gee is 3-0 versus the Nationals this season in three starts compiling a 0.96 ERA.

-- Washington hasn’t had any success with Dan Haren, going 4-14 in 18 starts and that includes a streak of 11 straight setbacks. During this 11-game skid, the Nationals have been held to three runs or less eight times. Haren has gone 2-2 in afternoon battles this season.

-- Even though the pitching matchup looks like a mismatch, the Nationals are listed as home favorites (-145) in this game.

                      L.A. Angels at Oakland - 3:05 p.m. ET (Game 3/4)

Teams Starting Pitchers Team Record (Away/Home) Current Form

                      Los Angeles Angels G. Richards (2-4, 4.66) 48-53 (21-25) 3-1 L4 OVER

                      Oakland Athletics T. Milone (8-8, 4.18) 60-43 (31-16) 4-2 L6

                      Betting Notes

-- Los Angeles took the opener in this series on Thursday with an 8-4 win while Oakland rebounded with a 6-4 win last night. Since the Athletics won the first four meetings of the season in April, the Angels have captured four of the last six. The ‘over’ has gone 7-3 in the 10 encounters.

-- L.A. and Oakland have both gone 4-4 since the All-Star break. The Angels are 11 games behind Oakland and tied for fourth place with Seattle in the American League West.

-- Oakland will start lefthander Tom Milone, who has struggled in daytime (1-4) games this season. Also, MIlone has gone 1-2 with a 7.80 ERA in his last three starts versus the Angels.

-- Los Angeles is 10-14 against southpaws this season.

-- The Angels are handing the ball to Garrett Richards today, who hasn’t stared since April. Richards was tagged by Oakland for eight hits and seven runs in a 10-6 loss at home on Apr. 30.

-- The Angels (18-12) have been better in the daytime than the Athletics (20-19) this season.

                      • Preview: Rays (61-42) at Yankees (54-49)
                        Game: 2
                        Venue: Yankee Stadium
                        Date: July 27, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

The Tampa Bay Rays' rotation is the primary reason they've surged to the top of the AL East.

The New York Yankees are hoping Alfonso Soriano can provide a spark with Derek Jeter sidelined at least one more game.

Rookie Chris Archer will try to keep the Rays rolling by winning a fifth straight decision against the foundering Yankees on Saturday.

Tampa Bay (61-42) has gotten a 2.13 ERA from the rotation, which has held opponents to .208 at the plate during a staggering 20-3 stretch that has vaulted the team atop the division.

The Rays are one-half game ahead of Boston after trailing by as many as seven on June 28.

Jeremy Hellickson turned in the latest strong performance Friday, yielding one run and four hits in six innings of a 10-6 win over the Yankees (54-49).

Archer (5-3, 2.76 ERA) has been a vital contributor to Tampa Bay's surge, going 4-0 with a 1.62 ERA over his last six starts and winning the last three behind a 0.41 ERA. The rookie right-hander began his four-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory at Yankee Stadium on June 23, yielding one run in six innings in his only career meeting with New York.

He was impressive Sunday, allowing one run in seven innings of a 4-3 win at Toronto.

"I've realized where my potential is and I'm striving for that every time out," Archer said.

While the Rays are the hottest team in baseball, the Yankees are scuffling through a 3-7 stretch.

New York is hitting .226 with no homers and 14 runs while dropping three of five. The team showed some signs of breaking out Friday with 11 hits but was unable to overcome a 10-1 deficit the final two innings.

The Yankees are hoping Soriano can begin making a difference. They acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on Friday, and he went 0 for 5 with one run and one RBI while batting cleanup.

"He's not the same player he used to be," general manager Brian Cashman said, "but he certainly provides some thunder from the right side that we've been lacking."

Pressure seems to be building on Cashman to find personnel to help the Yankees cut into their seven-game deficit to the Rays.

"We've obviously been trying to improve our offense, to no avail, throughout this season," Cashman said. "By far, (Soriano) is the best available bat to date."

New York could get a significant lift when Derek Jeter (right quadriceps) comes off the disabled list. He is eligible to be activated Saturday, but a decision won't be made until after he plays a simulated game that day.

The Yankees send Ivan Nova (4-3, 3.66) to the mound, and he's compiled a 2.55 ERA in seven games - four starts - since sitting out nearly a month with right triceps inflammation. Despite pitching better, he has just a 3-2 record to show for it since he's been backed by one total run in those defeats.

Nova didn't get any help Monday, when he allowed three runs in seven innings of a 3-0 loss at Texas.

His previous loss came to Archer, yielding three runs in 6 2-3 innings as his four-game home winning streak against the Rays ended.

Nova is 6-2 with a 2.27 ERA over his last eight overall games versus Tampa Bay.

Rays rookie Wil Myers has seven straight multihit games, going 15 for 30 with seven RBIs and six runs. The right fielder is 8 for 23 (.348) with five RBIs in five meetings with New York.

                          Game: 3

                          Date: July 27, 2013 1:07 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays have finally strung together a couple of wins.

Josh Johnson would settle for one at this point.

The right-hander will try to avoid a career-worst fifth consecutive losing start Saturday when the Blue Jays and major league-worst Houston Astros continue their series north of the border.

                          After Mark Buehrle's two-hitter in Thursday's 4-0 series-opening victory helped Toronto (47-55) end a season-high seven-game skid, the Blue Jays equaled a team record with 12 extra-base hits in Friday's 12-6 victory.

Edwin Encarnacion hit two of the club's five homers, a solo shot and a grand slam in the eight-run seventh. The only other Blue Jay to homer twice in one inning was Joe Carter on Oct. 3, 1993, against Baltimore.

"I don't think you can get any better than that,' manager John Gibbons said after Toronto won back-to-back games for the first time since a franchise record-tying 11-game surge June 11-23. "He's having another great year (with 28 home runs).'

Johnson (1-6, 5.66 ERA) is not. He's 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA in five starts since defeating the Orioles on June 23 after lasting just two-plus innings in Monday's 14-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing five runs and seven hits and calling his performance "pitiful."

"You feel for the guy because he's competing but it just hasn't happened,' Gibbons said.

Johnson, who also lost four consecutive starts Aug. 9-25 while with the Marlins, is 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA in four career starts versus Houston.

He'll face an Astros team that's dropped 19 of 23 overall and 15 of 19 on the road.

Houston (34-68) will try to get back on track with Dallas Keuchel (4-5, 4.42) going for his first win in six starts. The left-hander was in position to pick up a victory Monday, exiting with a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning, but the bullpen faltered again in a 4-3 loss.

The Astros have blown 15 saves and their relief corps has been tagged for a major league-high 64 homers - 22 more than anyone else in baseball.

"It doesn't matter about what the other team is going to do," manager Bo Porter said. "We have to do a better job of making quality pitches in those situations.'

One positive for Houston heading into the weekend is the play of Marc Krauss, who went 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs on Friday. The rookie left fielder had four RBIs in his first 20 games since getting called up June 21 when Trevor Crowe (shoulder) went on the disabled list.

Krauss could get more playing time with J.D. Martinez (sprained left wrist) being placed on the disabled list after getting injured Friday. The club called up center fielder Robbie Grossman to take Martinez's spot.

Jose Reyes is swinging one of the hottest bats for the Blue Jays since the All-Star break. Reyes is hitting .394 during that eight-game stretch with two homers, four doubles and seven RBIs after reaching safely five times and coming up a triple shy of the cycle Friday.

Colby Rasmus' 4-for-5 effort, meanwhile, lifted his average to .393 since the break.

Toronto has won three of four from Houston since losing the first four matchups between these clubs.

The Los Angeles Angels were hoping to begin a run toward the top of the standings in Oakland, though one of the best pitchers in baseball halted that momentum.

They should stand a better chance to make up some ground against a pitcher they've hit hard.

The Angels look to bounce back with their fifth win in seven games in this series Saturday when they face Tommy Milone and the AL West-leading A's.

Red-hot Bartolo Colon tied for the major league lead with his 14th win, allowing two runs over six innings in Oakland's 6-4 victory over Los Angeles on Friday. Jed Lowrie broke out of a 4-for-36 slump with three hits, including a homer, to help the A's (60-43) win for the 21st time in 27 home games.

Now 11 games behind Oakland and tied for fourth place in the division, the Angels (48-53) will try to start chipping away at the deficit by continuing their recent success against Milone (8-8, 4.18 ERA).

Following the shortest start of his career - 2 2-3 innings - in a 5-0 loss at Pittsburgh on July 10, Milone responded by allowing two earned runs and five hits over six innings Monday as the A's rallied for a 4-3 win at Houston.

The left-hander, however, has gone 1-2 with a 7.80 ERA in his last three starts versus the Angels.

Los Angeles has hit five home runs off Milone in those meetings after Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick took him deep in a 5-4 victory in Oakland on May 1.

Kendrick (6 for 14), Josh Hamilton (6 for 14) and Erick Aybar (5 for 11) have done some damage against Milone, while Albert Pujols is 7 for 14 with six doubles.

Trumbo has gone 9 for 19 in his last five games overall, though Hamilton is 4 for 29 in his last seven. Kendrick should be back in the lineup after getting the day off Friday.

Another productive day at the plate versus Milone would certainly help Garrett Richards (2-4, 4.66).

The right-hander, who went 1-2 with a 5.54 ERA in four April starts, gets another shot in the rotation as he replaces 13-game loser Joe Blanton.

"I feel like this is an opportunity to go out and pitch and to show them what I can do," Richards told the team's official website. "Every opportunity I feel like is an audition for a job, whether that be in the starting rotation or in the bullpen or even on the team. I'm just going to go out and pitch."

Richards allowed a season-high seven runs and eight hits over 5 2-3 innings in a 10-6 loss in Oakland on April 30. He's 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA in five appearances against the A's after holding them to one hit over two innings of relief in Sunday's 6-0 home loss.

Slugger Yoenis Cespedes has a double and triple in three at_bats against Richards this season, but he's just 3 for 21 in his last seven home games.

Catchers Derek Norris and Stephen Vogt are a combined 4 for 8 with two homers and four RBIs in their two starts while filling in for John Jaso (concussion).

The St. Louis Cardinals' fifth starter spot has been quite a revolving door this season, but for now, it's Joe Kelly's to lose.

That's assuming he remembers how to pitch.

Kelly hasn't seen game action in more than two weeks, but the visiting Cardinals are hoping he can pick up where he left off as he takes the mound Saturday against the Atlanta Braves.

St. Louis (62-38) has tried Kelly, Tyler Lyons, John Gast and Michael Wacha at the end of its rotation over the past few months, with each having varying degrees of success.

The Cardinals have only needed a fifth starter twice since June 22, but there are no longer conveniently placed off days on the schedule. Beginning with a home sweep of Philadelphia earlier this week, St. Louis has 21 games in a 20-day stretch before its next scheduled rest Aug. 12.

That means some additional opportunities for Kelly (1-3, 3.88 ERA), who has mainly worked in long relief but made a pair of starts prior to the All-Star break. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in three starts this season and 1-0 with a 2.49 ERA in his last four outings overall, going at least five innings apiece in a pair of long relief appearances and two starts.

"I don't look too far ahead about anything,' Kelly said after allowing one run over 5 1-3 in a 3-2 win over the Cubs on July 12. "I go out there and when they tell me to pitch, I pitch. That's what's good about being versatile, and I'm just still happy to be here.'

That, however, is the last time Kelly has taken the mound, marking his longest gap between pitches in the majors.

It's been a day longer since Matt Holliday last stepped into the batter's box, but he's set to come off the disabled list. The left fielder has passed all of the necessary running tests to return after straining his hamstring on July 11.

He'll be taking the field in a venue where he's fared quite well. Holliday is a career .383 hitter in 23 games at Turner Field - his best average of any road site where he's played at least 10 games - and he'll bring a 16-game hitting streak in Atlanta into his first look at Julio Teheran (7-5, 3.25).

The right-hander's 2.73 ERA since the beginning of June is tied for the best in the Braves' rotation over that span with Tim Hudson, who's out for the season with a fractured ankle. Teheran held the Mets to one run over six innings Monday in New York before Atlanta (58-45) plated a pair in the ninth to win 2-1.

Mike Minor held the Cardinals to a lone run over seven in Friday's series-opening 4-1 win, and without Hudson, the Braves may be relying on the left-hander and Teheran to front their rotation.

"With Huddy going down, that was our ace," Minor said. "That was our best guy. We just need everybody else to step it up a little bit.'

The Cardinals have the best record in baseball through 100 games, but they haven't won a road series since mid-June and are in danger of dropping another one.

St. Louis went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position, just the ninth time all year it's failed to get a hit in such situations. The Cardinals still lead the league in that category this season (.338) and this month (.353), but the Braves (.325) - who went 3 for 7 on Friday - have been the NL's next-best team in July.

Neither Kelly nor Teheran have faced their respective opponent previously.

Dan Haren needs a win in the worst of ways.

The Washington Nationals will look to provide their right-hander with an elusive victory when they host the New York Mets on Saturday afternoon.

Haren (4-11, 5.79 ERA) has gone a career-high 11 starts without a victory. Worse yet, the Nationals have lost each of those games.

Haren, against whom opposing batters are hitting .285 during his slump, has failed to pitch deep into games. He hasn't recorded an out in the seventh inning since May 30.

The Nationals (50-54) haven't done much to help him out, scoring 12 runs during Haren's skid.

That carried into his last start, when they spotted Haren a run in five innings, while he allowed five in a 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh on Monday.

Washington's offense hasn't been helping any of its pitchers lately. The Nationals have averaged 2.7 runs per game while losing 12 of 16. They've been particularly cold with runners in scoring position during that stretch, batting .117 after going 0 for 8 in Friday's doubleheader split against the Mets.

The Nationals did manage to create some late offense Friday, as Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth emerged from slumps. Werth was 2 for his last 13 before going 3 for 3 in Friday's nightcap. Zimmerman, meanwhile, hit the walk-off home run in Washington's 2-1 victory. The third baseman is 8 for his last 14 after going hitless in his previous 15 at_bats.

Haren has been dreadful in his last four starts against the Mets, posting an 8.14 ERA. On June 5, the Mets (46-54) reached him for three home runs in four innings of a 10-1 win. Marlon Byrd was responsible for two of those blasts, while David Wright added one of his own.

Byrd has owned Haren, going 10 for 18 with two homers, two doubles and a triple. Daniel Murphy, who went 6 for 9 in Friday's doubleheader and is 11 for his last 17, is 3 for 7 with a home run against Haren.

While Haren looks to overcome past shortcomings against the Mets, Dillon Gee (7-7, 4.07) tries to remain perfect against the Nationals in 2013. The right-hander has won all three of his starts versus Washington this year, compiling a 0.96 ERA. That included six innings of one-run ball June 29 in a 5-1 victory at Citi Field.

Gee has gone six straight starts without a loss and hasn't surrendered an earned run in 13 2-3 innings.

"He's always changing speeds. He's always moving it around. You're really not getting the same pitch twice,' manager Terry Collins said. "That's what's made him successful."

On Monday, he held Atlanta to two hits in seven scoreless innings of a 2-1 loss. That included getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh with a fielder's choice and a strikeout.

"That was satisfying because I wasn't doing that at all early in the year, getting out of jams like that," Gee said. "It was nice to get out of one for once and still keep us in the game."

Walk-off win aside, Friday was a trying day for Washington. Bryce Harper aggravated a left knee injury, according to manager Davey Johnson, in the doubleheader opener and pinch hit in the nightcap, and some controversy surrounded Drew Storen's unsuccessful relief appearance while suffering from the flu and his subsequent demotion to Triple A-Syracuse
