  • Preview: Twins (44-56) at Mariners (49-54)
    Game: 3
    Venue: Safeco Field
    Date: July 27, 2013 4:10 PM EDT

The Seattle Mariners' push for .500 took a step back, but their starting pitching continues to make positive strides.

Aaron Harang would like that trend to continue Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.

Since Mariners starters allowed 20 runs in three games against Boston from July 9-11, the rotation has yielded 18 earned runs during the team's 9-2 run. After Hisashi Iwakuma tossed six scoreless innings in Thursday's 8-2 victory over the Twins (44-56), ace Felix Hernandez was two outs from a shutout Friday when Trevor Plouffe's RBI single helped send the game to extra innings.

Rookie Chris Colabello's first career homer - a two-run shot - in the 13th was the difference as Minnesota snapped a six-game losing streak at Seattle (49-54) with a 3-2 victory.

"The last couple days I've been feeling a lot better in the box,' said Colabello, who was 5 for 37 in his first 13 games. "I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to help the team and do what I could to be successful, and obviously something like that is pretty special. I'll remember it for a long time.'

The Twins now will try to win for the eighth time in 11 games as they face Harang (5-8, 5.06 ERA) for the second time this season. Making his first start against Minnesota in 10 years, Harang threw six innings of two-run ball in a 5-4 road win June 1.

The right-hander is hoping for another strong outing after watching Iwakuma and Hernandez roll through the Twins' lineup.

"You kind of want to match what the guy did the night before and that's how you get on good streaks," he said after giving up one run in seven innings of Monday's 2-1 victory over Cleveland. "It's that competitiveness in the clubhouse, but we're also going out there trying to help our team win."

Samuel Deduno (6-4, 3.50) has the same goal in mind as he attempts to match a career high by winning a third consecutive start.

After holding the Yankees to a run over seven innings right before the break in New York, the right-hander allowed two runs in seven Monday to help Minnesota open its seven-game trip with a 4-3 victory over the Angels.

"Sammy was unbelievable against a very tough lineup that can do a lot of things with the bat, and he made pitch after pitch,' manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Deduno, who's pitched at least six innings in seven straight outings, made both of his starts against the Mariners last season. He went 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA in those contests, which included a 5-1 loss at Seattle on Aug. 19 as he walked a career-worst six.

If he runs into any problems Saturday, Gardenhire should have no reservations about turning to his bullpen. That group has surrendered just three runs in 12 2-3 innings this series - including a solo homer by Kendrys Morales in the 13th inning Friday - and owns a 1.86 ERA over the last 14 games.

Joe Mauer won't be behind the plate for the Twins until at least Tuesday as he remains with his family after his wife gave birth to twin girls this week.

The Mariners could be without rookie catcher Mike Zunino for the rest of the season after he was placed on the disabled list Friday with a broken bone in his left hand. Seattle signed veteran Humberto Quintero to help fill that void, but Henry Blanco should get a majority of the work behind the plate.

"We're going to lean on him quite a bit here on out,' said bench coach Robby Thompson, who's serving as acting manager with Eric Wedge recovering from a minor stroke suffered earlier this week.

    • Preview: Red Sox (61-43) at Orioles (58-46)
      Game: 2
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
      Date: July 27, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

For years the Baltimore Orioles served as personal punching bags for the Boston Red Sox.

Now, it appears those roles have been reversed.

A seventh consecutive series win against the slumping Red Sox will be the Orioles' goal Saturday night at Camden Yards.

Beating up on the Orioles was common while they struggled through 15 straight losing seasons, but few teams did it as well as the Red Sox, who won 55 of 72 over Baltimore from 2006-09.

The tide began to turn at the end of 2011, when Baltimore won four of the final five meetings, including a memorable season-ending victory to knock Boston out of playoff contention. That seemed to springboard the Orioles into 2012, when their run of futility ended with 93 wins and the franchise's first playoff appearance since 1997.

A big part of that success was a 13-5 record against the Red Sox. Baltimore (58-46) has continued that prosperity with six wins in eight meetings this year, including a 6-0 victory in Friday's series opener.

Chris Tillman pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and Adam Jones homered twice as the Orioles snapped a three-game skid overall and improved to 21-8 at home since dropping seven straight there in mid-May.

Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy also homered for the Orioles, raising their major league-leading total to 141.

``That's our style of play,' Jones said. ``Tonight, it worked.'

Machado is batting .444 (16 for 36) with two home runs, five doubles and eight RBIs against the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox dropped out of first place in the AL East for the first time since May 27 with their sixth loss in nine games.

``We've got a lot of guys that are really great hitters,' losing pitcher John Lackey said. ``They'll come through and we'll get it going.'

Most surprising is how little offense Boston (61-43) has managed versus Baltimore. The Red Sox lead the majors with 519 runs, but only 22 have come against the team that ranks 27th in the majors in ERA. They are batting .187 against the Orioles this year, with Jacoby Ellsbury going 7 for 34, Dustin Pedroia 5 for 26 and David Ortiz 3 for 19.

Scott Feldman (2-1, 4.73 ERA) will try to help send Boston to a season high-tying third straight loss as he makes his fifth start for the Orioles.

The right-hander had his best outing with his new team in a 9-2 win at Kansas City on Monday. He allowed two runs and five singles over eight innings in his longest start since throwing a complete game for the Cubs on May 1.

Feldman beat the Red Sox with seven strong innings for Texas on July 23, 2012, in his most recent meeting.

He'll want to be especially careful with Mike Napoli, who is 11 for 23 with two homers in their matchups.

Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.28) seeks his first win in five starts for Boston. The right-hander has no record and a 4.87 ERA in his last four outings, walking 10 and striking out 14 over 20 1-3 innings during that stretch. He allowed five runs - three earned - and four walks in 5 1-3 innings Sunday against the Yankees in an 8-7 win in 11.

Though he is 1-2 with a 4.64 ERA in six road starts, Dempster was very good in a 2-0 loss at Baltimore on June 14. He worked around five walks, giving up two runs and five hits over 7 2-3 innings.

Dempster hasn't had much trouble with the Orioles, going 1-1 with a 1.73 ERA in four career starts. He's been particularly tough on Hardy, holding him to two hits in 30 at_bats (.067).

      • Preview: Phillies (49-54) at Tigers (57-45)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Comerica Park
        Date: July 27, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Phillies have made almost every opposing starter look like an All-Star while struggling offensively this week.

That doesn't bode well considering they will face an actual one Saturday.

Max Scherzer seeks his major league-leading 15th victory as the Detroit Tigers attempt to hand the Phillies a season-worst seventh consecutive loss.

Scherzer (14-1, 3.14 ERA), who pitched a perfect opening inning for the AL in the All-Star game, came out of the break sharp Monday, allowing two solo homers and two other hits over eight innings in a 7-3 road victory over the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander won for the 20th time in his last 30 starts since Aug. 10, the most in the majors in that span.

"I was working ahead in the count, had four pitches going," Scherzer, who could become the first Tigers pitcher to start 15-1 dating back to at least 1919, told the team's official website. "I felt that made me effective and allowed me to have some quick innings. No walks - that's always a recipe for success."

Scherzer, making his first interleague start this year and first career appearance versus the Phillies, has had mixed results against NL opponents. He is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 14 starts against the senior circuit but won both his home outings last year, striking out 27 in 15 innings in victories over Pittsburgh and Colorado.

The injury-ravaged Phillies (49-54) have plated only 10 runs during their losing streak, batting .208 with 48 strikeouts in 197 at_bats, and they've scored five times in their last five. Manager Charlie Manuel thinks the looming trade deadline is also contributing to his team's woes, noting, "We've got a lot of young, inexperienced players, and they get concerned about where they are going to be playing and who is going be traded."

Whatever the reasons, opposing starters have compiled a 1.36 ERA in the six contests, and the best pitcher in that group - NL All-Star starter Matt Harvey of the New York Mets - fanned 10 in seven innings of a 5-0 win Sunday.

Having a non-existent margin of error may not have mattered much to All-Star Cliff Lee, but the left-hander was scratched due to a stiff neck - fueling speculation the Phillies may deal him - and gives way to Raul Valdes (1-0, 7.59 ERA). The left-hander went 3-4 with a 3.10 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 66 2-3 innings over 12 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before being recalled Tuesday, when he allowed one run and two hits in 1 1-3 innings in relief of a 4-1 loss at St. Louis.

Valdes, who will make his third career start and first since June 27, 2012, has never faced the Tigers.

He may catch a break if slugger Miguel Cabrera is sidelined for a fifth straight game due to a sore left hip flexor. The AL MVP took batting practice prior to Friday's 2-1 victory and may be available as a DH or pinch hitter, but the Tigers (57-45) continue to be cautious with the 2012 Triple Crown winner.

"Obviously, you'd rather lose Miguel Cabrera for two or three games than two or three weeks," trainer Kevin Rand told the team's official website. "He's feeling a lot better, but he still feels he needs another day or so. It's important for us to make sure that he's right before he comes back."

Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter should be available after missing Friday's win due to a sore Achilles he said occurred by wearing dress shoes that were too tight. He is 6 for 14 with three homers in his last four games.

          • Preview: Rangers (56-47) at Indians (54-48)
            Game: 2
            Venue: Progressive Field
            Date: July 27, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians' lineup came alive at the end of their six-game road trip. It didn't miss a beat in their return home.

The Indians will look to ride their streaking offense to a third straight win as they host the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

After batting .184 during the first four games of a six-game road trip, Cleveland (54-48) has recorded double-digit hits in three straight contests. That culminated in an 18-hit performance in the Indians' 11-8 extra-inning victory over the Rangers on Friday.

Three of those came in the 11th, with Ryan Raburn's homer ending it after Cleveland blew a six-run lead.

"We may not have the best talent, but we have by far one of the tightest teams,' first baseman Nick Swisher said. "No one was excited about going to extra innings, but we're always going to keep fighting hard and finding ways to win."

Asdrubal Cabrera, Mike Aviles and Michael Brantley each finished with three hits. It was Brantley's first multi-hit performance since July 8.

The Indians' offense is starting to come alive, but their rotation has been sparkling for some time. Cleveland's starters have posted a 2.04 ERA since July 9, the best in the AL in that span.

It's hard to be much better than Justin Masterson (11-7, 3.60 ERA) was his last time out. The right-hander held Minnesota hitless through six, and wound up leaving after seven having given up only Brian Dozier's broken-bat bloop double and one run in a 7-1 win on Sunday.

"He was filthy," Dozier told MLB.com. "The whole game, he kept powering sinkers and just fell off the table."

Masterson has been anything but filthy against Texas (56-47), going 0-4 with a 7.54 ERA in four career starts. He hasn't faced the Rangers since September 2011, though.

Yu Darvish (9-4, 2.86) is also coming off a strong start, as he surrendered two hits in 6 1-3 innings of Texas' 3-0 win over the New York Yankees on Monday. After hitting the first batter he faced, the right-hander retired 11 straight.

Darvish has failed to last seven innings in five straight starts. After he went seven-plus in seven of eight starts, averaging 15.9 pitches per inning, the right-hander has been less efficient of late, with 17.8 pitches per inning.

He needed 112 pitches to get through six in his lone start against the Indians, allowing four runs but striking out 11 in a 4-2 loss May 6, 2012.

Darvish had the highest run-support average in the majors through his first nine starts, getting 9.05 runs per nine innings, but that offensive assistance has all but disappeared over the past two months. He's received 2.77 runs of support on average over his past 10 outings, one of the worst marks in the AL.

The Rangers, who have lost 10 of 13, finally saw their bats come to life late Friday. An offense that had topped four runs just once in 12 games coming into Progressive Field scored two apiece in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

"We could have very easily given up, but we didn't," manager Ron Washington said.

Elvis Andrus scored twice and singled to extend his hitting streak to eight games. He has five hits and four strikeouts in 10 career at_bats against Masterson.

David Murphy is 4 for 4 with a pair of homers against Masterson, while A.J. Pierzynski is 14 for 33 (.424).

Adrian Beltre came into Cleveland hitting just .214 since the All-Star break, but he had three hits Friday.

            • Preview: Royals (49-51) at White Sox (40-60)
              Game: 2
              Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
              Date: July 27, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

Strong pitching is a big reason the Kansas City Royals are surging since the All-Star break.

Wade Davis would like to contribute to that success.

Davis will try to lead the Royals to a fifth straight win by ending his four-game slide Saturday night against the last-place Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City (49-51) has won six of eight since the break, and the rotation has been key with a 1.79 ERA in those victories and a 2.34 mark overall. James Shields kept the Royals hot Friday, tossing seven scoreless innings in a 5-1 win in the opener of this three-game set.

"I think we're playing some decent baseball right now," Shields said. "I think there's always room to improve, but right now we're on a little bit of a roll and it's nice. I think we're playing on all cylinders right now."

That's certainly not the case for Davis (4-9, 5.92 ERA), who has baseball's highest ERA and WHIP (1.81) of any pitcher with at least 97 innings. The right-hander is also 1-6 with a 5.88 ERA over his last 11 starts, losing four in a row with a 10.91 ERA while striking out 19 and walking 12 in 15 2-3 innings.

Davis' struggles showed few signs of ending in Monday's 9-2 loss to Baltimore. He surrendered four runs and seven hits with three walks while throwing 83 pitches in 2 2-3 innings.

"I'm just inconsistent," Davis said. "I've got to get deep in games. I fell behind in the count too much, a leadoff walk."

He's been very consistent against the White Sox, however, going 3-1 with a 1.91 ERA in nine games - six starts. That includes allowing three runs in 13 innings without a decision in two starts this year.

The White Sox have dropped seven of 10, but Chris Sale (6-9, 2.81) is looking to win a fourth straight start at home against the Royals.

The left-hander has a 1.25 ERA while winning his last three against the AL Central rival on the South Side. He was dominant again April 1, scattering seven hits with seven strikeouts before leaving with two outs in the eighth of a 1-0 win on opening day.

Sale hasn't received much help from the offense over his last nine outings anywhere. He has a 3.09 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 64 innings over that span, but is 1-7 since he's been backed by an average of 2.3 runs.

That was the case again in Monday's 7-3 loss to Detroit, as Sale allowed four runs - two earned - and fanned 11 in eight innings while backed by two runs as his defense committed three errors.

It wasn't his performance that put him in the spotlight, however, as much as his argument with pitching coach Don Cooper on the mound after being told to intentionally walk Miguel Cabrera.

Sale later apologized to manager Robin Ventura.

"I was pretty embarrassed with how I reacted," Sale told the team's official website. "No matter how confident I am in myself for what I think might be right, at the end of the day, it's his call. And I have to respect that."

Sale has struggled against Billy Butler, who is 9 for 28 (.321) off him with three homers and one double.

Butler has two doubles and a solo homer while recording three straight multihit games.

              • Preview: Pirates (60-41) at Marlins (39-62)
                Game: 2
                Venue: Marlins Park
                Date: July 27, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

Although the majors' best pitching staff held down baseball's worst offense, the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't overcome their struggles at the plate against the Miami Marlins.

Now, the Pirates will try to rebound and avoid their third straight loss Saturday night at Marlins Park.

Miami closer Steve Cishek converted his 16th straight save opportunity by retiring pinch-hitter Jose Tabata with two on to lock down Friday's 2-0 series-opening victory.

Pittsburgh (60-41) finished with five hits and struck out 11 times, raising its total to 39 over the last three games.

The Pirates also went hitless in six at_bats with runners in scoring position, dropping their major-league worst average in those situations to .219. They're 9 for 84 (.107) in those key situations over their last nine games.

Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Starling Marte are a combined 1 for 27 with runners in scoring position during this stretch. McCutchen is also 2 for 16 overall in his last four games, while Marte is 2 for 28 in his last seven.

Jordy Mercer is one of the few Pirates currently performing well, batting .341 during a career-best 11-game hitting streak.

Pittsburgh hopes for a better offensive performance against Miami starter Tom Koehler (2-5, 4.38 ERA).

After spending some time at Triple-A New Orleans, Koehler struck out seven and limited Colorado to one run over seven innings in Monday's 3-1 road win.

"He had great command," said manager Mike Redmond of the right-hander's first big-league start since July 2. "He was pounding his fastball in and out and threw some great breaking balls."

Koehler looks for his first win at Marlins Park, where he's 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in four starts. He'll try to continue an outstanding run by the team's starters, who have a 2.44 ERA since the All-Star break.

"It's unreal going in knowing you have a chance even though the bats haven't been there, and knowing one run may be enough,' slugger Giancarlo Stanton said. "You can go about the game completely differently.'

The Marlins (39-62), batting a major-league worst .232, have won four of five despite totaling 15 runs over that span.

They also rank last in the majors with 61 home runs, though Stanton hit the team's fourth in five games Friday. He's 4 for 6 in his last two games following a 2-for-21 slump.

Scheduled Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (2-2, 3.35) has been plagued by the home run of late, giving up five in his last three outings after allowing none in his first four.

After allowing a season-high four earned runs in a 4-1 road loss to the Cubs on July 6, the right-hander has yielded five runs and 12 hits over 13 2-3 innings in consecutive quality starts.

Morton is 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in six career starts against the Marlins, though he hasn't faced them since 2011.

Morton isn't expected to be throwing to catcher Russell Martin, who tweaked his left knee blocking home plate on a play in the second inning Friday. He left the game in the seventh and said he would likely take Saturday off.

"I've actually had something like this before, and I played with it in the past," Martin said. "It's a little uncomfortable, but it doesn't keep me from doing anything physically.'

                • Preview: Brewers (42-60) at Rockies (50-54)
                  Game: 2
                  Venue: Coors Field
                  Date: July 27, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

As the Milwaukee Brewers look to fill a key spot following Ryan Braun's suspension, Jean Segura has yet to prove he can produce as their No. 3 hitter.

The Brewers hope to get something out of Braun's old place in the lineup and avoid their fifth loss in six games without him as they visit the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night.

NL Central-worst Milwaukee (42-60) fell to 1-4 since losing their star slugger for the rest of the season with Friday's 8-3 loss at Coors Field. Clean-up batter Carlos Gomez provided one of the few highlights with his 17th homer and is 8 for 13 with four RBIs in his last three games.

Although they scored their most runs since June 25 in Thursday's 10-8 loss to San Diego, the Brewers are hitting .216 - including 9 for 47 (.191) with runners in scoring position - over their last six games.

Segura, who leads the team with a .313 average, went 1 for 4 with two strikeouts in Friday's loss and has gone 2 for 21 while batting in the third spot each of the last five games.

With Segura and the Brewers scuffling at the plate, this could be a perfect spot for Collin McHugh (0-1, 10.29 ERA) to make his debut with the Rockies (50-54).

McHugh, acquired from the Mets for Eric Young Jr. last month, looks to help Colorado win its fifth in nine games on this homestand. He replaces injured left-hander Drew Pomeranz (bicep tendinitis) in the rotation after going 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA combined for Triple-A Las Vegas and Colorado Springs.

McHugh had one start with the Mets, allowing four runs and six hits over four-plus innings in an 8-1 loss at Miami on June 1. He's 0-4 with a 7.52 ERA in five career starts.

The right-hander gave up one run and two hits in 2-3 innings of relief in a 9-6 loss at Milwaukee on Sept. 15.

Norichika Aoki, who had an RBI single off McHugh in that contest, looks to extend a seven-game hitting streak in this meeting.

Teammate Rickie Weeks went 2 for 4 Friday to end a 2-for-32 slump. He's 11 for 20 in his last five games versus Colorado.

After scoring an NL-low 58 runs in their previous 20 games, the Rockies scored eight times in the first four innings and went 5 for 12 with runners in scoring position in the series opener.

They'll try to build on the performance against Milwaukee starter Tom Gorzelanny (1-4, 2.47), who hopes to bounce back from his worst start of the year.

After allowing no earned runs in his first two outings since moving into the rotation, the left-hander gave up a season-high five runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 5-3 loss to San Diego on Monday.

Gorzelanny is 1-1 with a 7.20 ERA in six career appearances in Denver, though his last start there came in 2010. He's allowed one run in 1 1-3 innings of relief in two games against the Rockies this season.

This time, he might not have to face All-Star Carlos Gonzalez, who is 6 for 9 with a triple and two doubles in this matchup.

Gonzalez, tied for the NL lead with 26 home runs, did not play Friday and remains day to day after spraining his right middle finger in a 5-3 loss to Miami on Thursday.

                  • Preview: Padres (46-58) at Diamondbacks (54-49)
                    Game: 2
                    Venue: Chase Field
                    Date: July 27, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

Solid starting pitching and an improved offense have the Arizona Diamondbacks just off the NL West lead.

The Diamondbacks could take over that spot with some help and another victory over the division's worst team.

Rookie Tyler Skaggs gets the ball Saturday night when Arizona goes for its third straight series win at home over the San Diego Padres.

With Randall Delgado throwing a three-hitter and seven Diamondbacks finishing with at least two hits, Friday's 10-0 victory was one of the most well-rounded of the season for Arizona (54-49).

It also tied for the Diamondbacks' third-most lopsided victory over the Padres (46-58), who held Arizona to six total runs in a three-game June sweep in San Diego.

The Diamondbacks remained a half-game behind the West-leading Dodgers.

Arizona's starters have a 1.30 ERA in winning three of four, and the club has totaled 29 runs and 50 hits during that stretch. The Diamondbacks' rotation had a 4.78 ERA while the team plated 22 total runs in its previous eight contests.

Not everything went Arizona's way Friday, as second baseman Aaron Hill left after two innings with right hamstring tightness. Hill, who missed more than two months earlier this season with a broken hand, was just starting to find his hitting stroke, going 4 for 6 with a homer and three doubles in the last two contests.

Manager Kirk Gibson told the team's official website Hill would sit Saturday, but Hill isn't so sure.

"That's debatable," he said. "I haven't got to argue my case yet."

Miguel Montero likely will return behind the plate to catch Skaggs (2-2, 4.11 ERA) after missing the last four games with a stiff back.

Skaggs, however, has been struggling to keep the ball in the park. He was tagged for two homers for the third time in five starts in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

"I left a few up in the zone," he told the Diamondbacks' official website after giving up three runs over six innings. "A few pitches weren't where I wanted them to be, and they got hit out of the yard."

He's had two balls leave the yard in his two previous starts against San Diego, but those were far from his only problems. Skaggs lasted a combined eight innings in those September outings, allowing nine runs and 16 baserunners.

The Padres will counter with Andrew Cashner (6-5, 3.84), who comes in off his first win in nearly six weeks. San Diego had dropped five straight with the right-hander on the mound before he held the Brewers to three runs and three hits over six innings in a 5-3 road victory.

Manager Bud Black was encouraged with how Cashner controlled his slider and settled down after allowing two first-inning runs.

"To bring that (pitch) into his arsenal will help him in the second half," Black told the Padres' official website.

Cashner is 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in four starts against Arizona.

The Padres, who have split the first eight games on a trip that ends Sunday, have dropped five of seven visiting the Diamondbacks since a 7-0 run in the desert.

                      Game: 2
                      Venue: AT&T Park

The San Francisco Giants may be the reigning World Series champion, but they're on the verge of dropping into the NL West cellar.

Madison Bumgarner will try to prevent that from happening.

Bumgarner attempts to help the Giants avoid a sixth loss in seven games and beat the Chicago Cubs for a third straight time at AT&T Park on Saturday night.

San Francisco (46-56) has won two of the past three World Series, but the team is much closer to the basement than first place after dropping five of six, including Friday's 3-2 defeat to Chicago.

The Giants trail the division-leading Dodgers by eight games and are one game ahead of last-place San Diego.

Bumgarner (10-6, 2.93 ERA) has been by far the team's most reliable starter this season. He leads San Francisco in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts, while his ERA is the lowest of any qualifying member of the rotation.

Still, he could've used some help from the offense Sunday, when he was the hard-luck loser in a 3-1 defeat to Arizona. He yielded one run and five hits in seven innings.

Bumgarner had won each of his previous three decisions over four starts at home behind a 1.93 ERA.

He's had similar success at home against the Cubs (46-55), going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three outings. The left-hander has won the last two, allowing two runs with 22 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Bumgarner, though, could find it difficult to win if the Giants' offense doesn't produce. They have scored 14 runs over the past six games and are 9 for 47 (.191) with runners in scoring position during that stretch.

Buster Posey has been a major culprit, going 1 for 16 and stranding seven runners in those six games. He went 0 for 4 in Friday's opener, dropping his average in 11 home contests against the Cubs to .158.

Jeff Francoeur drove in both of San Francisco's runs Friday and is 7 for 16 with a homer and six RBIs over his past five meetings versus Chicago.

The Cubs have alternated wins and losses over the past five games, but they're making an impact on the postseason race by trading veterans to contenders ahead of Wednesday's non-waiver trade deadline.

Alfonso Soriano was the latest departure, as he was sent to the Yankees for minor league pitcher Corey Black on Friday.

More moves seem to be on the horizon.

"There are some things we'd like to explore, and if we can find the right fit and bring value back to the organization, sure, we would be (interested)," president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told the team's official website. "We've had a very active July. We set out to be proactive, especially with starting pitching."

One of those deals sent Matt Garza to Texas in exchange for rookie right-hander Justin Grimm, third baseman Mike Olt and Class-A pitcher C.J. Edwards.

That deal opened a rotation spot for Chris Rusin (1-0, 5.40), who is scheduled to face the Giants for the first time.

The rookie left-hander made a case for remaining in the rotation Monday, allowing two runs and two hits in five innings of a 4-2 win at Arizona, hours after being recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

Starlin Castro is hitting .385 over the past 12 games after getting two hits and one RBI on Friday. He's 10 for 24 (.417) with two homers, two doubles and five RBIs in as many games versus the Giants this year.

Castro is also 8 for 21 (.381) against Bumgarner.

                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Dodger Stadium

The Cincinnati Reds finally cooled off a little bit on Friday night.

Bronson Arroyo looks to cap off a wildly successful July by getting the Reds back on track Saturday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Arroyo (9-7, 3.19 ERA) has gone 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA this month, and opposing batters are hitting just .172 off the right-hander in four July starts. That included a dazzling effort to open up the Reds' 11-game West Coast trip, as he tossed a seven-hitter Monday in an 11-0 rout of the San Francisco Giants.

His sixth career shutout improved his mark to 6-0 with a 1.32 ERA in nine starts this year when pitching after a Reds loss, yielding only 10 runs in 68 1-3 innings, and they have won all nine games.

"I try not to pitch any different, but to be honest, sometimes there's an urgency to the mood in the clubhouse," Arroyo said. "This game is very difficult and nobody can go out there and just say, 'I'm going to win the ballgame today.' So, it's partly probably luck and a bit of trying to just really want to not let your team slide downhill again."

Arroyo was typically precise against the Giants, avoiding any walks, and is seventh in the majors with 1.56 free passes per nine innings.

He also has recently fared quite well against the Dodgers. After some early struggles in his career, he is 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his last six starts against them.

While the Dodgers (54-48) have won 10 straight away from home and a major league-best 24 of 30 overall, they have split their last six at home and scored just six runs over their last five games at Dodger Stadium.

Hanley Ramirez accounted for Los Angeles' offense in Friday's 2-1 win with a sixth-inning home run and is batting .389 (14 for 36) with three homers and three doubles while hitting safely in all eight games since the All-Star break. He's also reached safely in 34 straight contests.

"He's been swinging a hot bat," first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. "When he's going like this, we kind of all jump on his back."

They'll also look to ride Hyun-Jin Ryu (8-3, 3.25), who is 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA in his last eight starts at Dodger Stadium following a slightly shaky major league debut.

The Dodgers have won Ryu's last five starts, and his next victory will tie him with Jae Seo for the most wins by a South Korean pitcher in his rookie season. Ryu leads all rookies with 122 innings pitched, and his eight wins trail only St. Louis' Shelby Miller, who has 10.

After allowing three runs or fewer in 10 straight starts, during which he had a 2.25 ERA, he has allowed four or more in his last two. He labored to a win at Toronto on Monday, giving up four runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings as the Dodgers won 14-5.

The Reds (59-45) had averaged 7.2 runs through their first five games on this trip and reached double figures in hits in each contest before Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen held them to four doubles and two singles.

"They've got a great team over there, great lineup,' Kershaw said. "The key is to get these middle guys and not to give them any opportunities."

Reds right fielder Jay Bruce extended his hitting streak to six games with a seventh-inning single but has as many hits (9) as strikeouts over 23 at_bats in that span.
