Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

          13) If you don’t think NFL schedule makers amuse themselves when they draw up their schedule every year, think again; Tampa Bay Bucs are coached by former Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, who is in his second year with the Bucs. Tampa Bay’s first road game LY was against the Giants in Swamp Stadium; their opener this year is against the Jets in the Swamp. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

          12) Cubs saved $6.8M by trading Alfonso Soriano and his 37-year old knees to the Bronx Friday; the kid they got for Soriano is no prospect- he is 4-8, 4.25 in Class A Florida State League, with 45 walks in 82.2 IP. Oy.

          11) There are 21 players in the American League making $15M+ this season; nine of the 21 now play home games in the Bronx.

          10) A’s catcher John Jaso got drilled in mask by three foul tips in his last four games, is now on the 7-day concussion DL; imagine how many times concussions have been ignored in catchers over the years? Umpires, too.

          9) Turner Field put a Waffle House in; wish they would put one here in upstate NY; odds are it is better than Denny’s, which dominates late night eating where I live.

          8) Tommy Tuberville Jr, son of U of Cincinnati's football coach, will be a walk-on QB at Auburn this fall, where his dad used to work. Wonder if the kid is any good; if he was real good, he’d be playing for the Bearcats.

          7) Once Bills/Colts report to training camp Saturday, then all 32 teams will be training camp for the season opener in September. Preseason games start next weekend.

          6) Redskins’ OC Kyle Shanahan told ESPN.com that he thought the read-option offense helped reduce blitzing by defenses last year. Curious (and doubtful) to see if it has the same effect this season.

          5) For the first time in over a decade, Nets-Knicks aren’t playing each other in exhibition season this fall. Not sure why.

          4) Former Gonzaga star Adam Morrison is back in Spokane after a short and unproducitve NBA career, and will be a student assistant coach for the Bulldogs this winter. Pretty good practice player right there.

          3) When is Mayor Bloomberg going to ban electronic cigarettes in the Big Apple? If 20-ounce Cokes are so bad for mankind, smoking of any kind has to be right there, too, no?

          2) UCLA/USC both have new basketball coaches. Steve Alford is one of the most famous college players ever; Andy Enfield played at freakin’ Johns Hopkins; five months ago, no one could pick him out of a lineup, but he is obviously very sharp. Interesting battles those two will have over the next decade, both on the court and recruiting-- lot of good young talent coming up thru the high school ranks on the west coast.

          1) Looks like Pittsburgh closer Jason Grilli has a flexor strain and will miss around six weeks; time to go out and get Papelbon, front office-- make those sellouts from earlier this summer pay off now!!!! Try to win!!!!

                • Preview: Phillies (49-55) at Tigers (58-45)
                  Game: 3
                  Venue: Comerica Park
                  Date: July 28, 2013 1:08 PM EDT

With two of their top sluggers back in the lineup, the Detroit Tigers enjoyed a big day at the plate on the way to another victory.

That's something the struggling Philadelphia Phillies haven't experienced in quite a while.

Almost fully healthy, the surging Tigers will try to finish off a three-game sweep and hand the Phillies their eighth straight loss Sunday at Comerica Park.

AL Central-leading Detroit (58-45) poured on eight runs in the first two innings off fill-in starter Raul Valdes in Saturday's 10-0 win. That was more than enough for starter Max Scherzer, who became baseball's first 15-game winner.

After missing four games because of an injured left hip, Miguel Cabrera wasted little time making a contribution in his return to the lineup. He hit his 32nd home run in his first at-bat and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs to help the Tigers win their sixth in seven games.

"I'm feeling OK, so I was thinking, try to go out there and try to go and play,' Cabrera said.

Torii Hunter also made an impact after sitting out Friday because of a sore left Achilles tendon, going 3 for 4 with double. He's 9 for 22 with three homers in his last five contests.

The Tigers, though, are expected to be without second baseman Omar Infante (ankle) for even longer after he suffered a setback in his rehab Saturday. Infante last played July 3.

With power hitters Ryan Howard (knee surgery) and Domonic Brown (concussion) on the shelf, Philadelphia (49-55) is batting .191 while plating only 10 runs during this losing streak. The Phillies, who haven't lost eight in a row since Sept. 18-24, 2011, had two hits Saturday.

"They came out with hot bats and we came out facing one of the best pitchers in baseball," second baseman Chase Utley said.

Laynce Nix and Michael Young have been the primary culprits, going a combined 3 for 38 during the skid.

They may have a tough time turning things around against Rick Porcello (7-6, 4.49 ERA).

Since losing three straight starts at the end of June, the right-hander has been sharp with a 1.35 ERA over a three-start winning streak. He did not allow a run for the second time in three outings Tuesday, giving up four hits over seven innings in a 6-2 win versus the White Sox.

Porcello also is 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA in his last four interleague starts at Comerica Park after holding Pittsburgh to three hits over eight shutout innings in a 1-0, 11-inning loss on May 28.

Porcello gets his first look at the Phillies, though Delmon Young (8 for 22), Ben Revere (7 for 19) and Michael Young (5 for 13) had success against him during their time in the AL. Delmon Young won the AL championship series MVP with the Tigers last season.

Philadelphia hopes to bookend a nine-game road trip with victories as it gives the ball to Jonathan Pettibone (5-4, 3.97).

Pettibone has pitched well of late, limiting the opposition to three runs or fewer in his last six starts. He's 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA while allowing only one home run over that span.

The right-hander yielded three runs over five innings Tuesday but received no runs of support in a 4-1 loss at St. Louis.

While he's 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA in nine starts at Citizens Bank Park, Pettibone has gone 2-3 with a 5.62 ERA in eight road outings.

                  • Preview: Rays (62-42) at Yankees (54-50)
                    Game: 3
                    Venue: Yankee Stadium
                    Date: July 28, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

Derek Jeter could return to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

They'll likely need all the help they can get against the red-hot Matt Moore.

Moore takes the mound Sunday looking to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to their second ever three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium.

After a 10-6 slugfest in favor of Tampa Bay (62-42) on Friday, Chris Archer turned in a two-hitter in a 1-0 win Saturday, the club's 24th victory in 29 games. Kelly Johnson drove in the lone run with a sixth-inning single, while the Yankees' only hits came from Brett Gardner and Lyle Overbay.

New York (54-50) was still without Jeter, who was eligible to come off the disabled list but instead played a simulated game in Staten Island as manager Joe Girardi said the club wanted him to test his strained right quadriceps.

"You can be in great shape, but playing shape's a little bit different because you're getting used to standing around, starting and stopping, so we had to do all that," Girardi said. "As of right now, he came out very well. So we'll see how he feels (Sunday)."

Girardi added that Jeter, whose only game this season was July 11 against Kansas City, will start at shortstop if he's feeling well.

"It's obviously someone we've been waiting for for a long time," Girardi said. "We had him for one day. We won that game, so hopefully his ratio continues."

Alex Rodriguez, meanwhile, remained rehabbing at the team's minor league facility in Tampa, Fla., and Travis Hafner didn't play, undergoing an MRI on his shoulder.

New York's outlook doesn't appear favorable against Moore (14-3, 3.17 ERA), who seeks his seventh win in as many starts. Jeter might be able to provide some help, with his .455 average against the left-hander ranking fourth among all players with at least 10 at_bats against him.

Moore owns a 1.50 ERA during his six-start win streak, which began with an 8-3 victory in New York on June 20 when he gave up three runs over 6 1-3 innings. He's allowed three earned runs over his last 29 2-3 innings.

The 24-year-old Moore is coming off his first career shutout, throwing 109 pitches while allowing two hits in a 3-0 win at Boston on Monday.

"I think that's the most efficient I've been," said Moore, who is 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA in three outings against the Yankees this year. "I think that's probably the best game I've ever thrown (considering) the Red Sox are playing well, and we're on the road."

New York is hoping to avoid being swept at home by the Rays for the first time since Sept. 25-27, 1999, when Jeter was 25 years old.

The Yankees have lost eight of 11 and are on the verge of going homerless in 10 straight games for the first time since 1984. Alfonso Soriano hasn't yet provided the pop the team hoped for when acquiring him from the Chicago Cubs, as he's 0 for 8 in two games.

Scheduled starter Phil Hughes (4-9, 4.33) has become all too familiar with a lack of offensive help. He's 1-5 in his last seven starts despite a 3.61 ERA, receiving an average of 2.3 runs of support.

Hughes is 1-7 in 10 home starts this year with a 5.63 ERA but has done well lately versus the Rays, going 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA in his last six games against them.

Yunel Escobar, who doubled in each of the series' first two games, is 7 for 19 off Hughes, while Matt Joyce is 5 for 13 with a double, a triple and two homers. Luke Scott is 8 for 16 versus the right-hander.

                    • Preview: Astros (35-68) at Blue Jays (47-56)
                      Game: 4
                      Venue: Rogers Centre
                      Date: July 28, 2013 1:07 PM EDT

After losing Friday largely because of the long ball, the Houston Astros matched the Toronto Blue Jays' power display Saturday at this year's most home run-friendly park.

Considering the way rookie Jarred Cosart has pitched, the Astros might not need nearly as much offense Sunday as they seek a four-game split in Toronto.

The Blue Jays (47-56) recorded a franchise-record 12 extra-base hits in a 12-6 victory Friday with eight of their runs coming on five homers, which matched a season high. They tallied three more homers Saturday, but Chris Carter, Matt Dominguez and Justin Maxwell went deep for the Astros in their 8-6 win, just their fifth in 24 games.

"We need every win that we can get," manager Bo Porter said. "Just looking at the last few games, and we were in a position to win several of them and were not able to come out on the winning side. It was good to get a good performance."

Carter's team-leading 19th of the year, a three-run shot, snapped his nine-game homerless drought while Dominguez's 13th was just his second in 23 games.

Houston (35-68), which homered four times over its previous seven games, has 99 home runs on the season while Toronto has 131, second in the majors behind Baltimore.

The 165 homers hit at Rogers Centre are the most of any stadium.

Cosart (1-0, 0.60 ERA) has yet to allow one through 15 major league innings. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh of his big league debut at Tampa Bay on July 12, then limited Oakland to two runs - one earned - over seven innings of a 5-4 victory Tuesday, though he didn't receive a decision.

He is the third Astros pitcher to throw at least seven innings in each of his first two big league starts while allowing one earned run or fewer.

"He looked like he was in control of the game the entire time," Porter told the team's official website after Cosart allowed seven hits and threw 115 pitches in his last outing. "That's why I stayed with him as long as I stayed with him."

Cosart will have to be especially wary of Colby Rasmus, who hit his 17th homer Saturday and is batting .417 over his last 16 games with nine doubles.

Toronto also will start a rookie as Todd Redmond (1-1, 4.43) takes the mound. He went without a decision his last time out, surrendering three runs and seven hits over a career-best 5 2-3 innings in a 10-9 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

"He did a great job. He gave us what we needed," manager John Gibbons said of Redmond, who struck out a career-best six for the second straight start. "It's not an easy lineup to face and he held them in check."

Houston second baseman Jose Altuve left in the seventh inning Saturday with a sore left quadriceps, but Porter described the injury as mild and said he planned on giving him Sunday off anyway.

A win would give the Astros, who have dropped 19 of 24, their first non-losing series since a two-game split with St. Louis from June 25-26.

                      • Preview: Rangers (56-48) at Indians (55-48)
                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Progressive Field
                        Date: July 28, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

It's been 33 years since the Cleveland Indians swept a three-game series with the Texas Rangers in town.

It's been 40 since they rolled off five straight wins over the Rangers in one season.

Cleveland could change both Sunday by extending its longest home winning streak in two seasons to seven.

After Ryan Raburn delivered a walkoff three-run homer in Friday's 11-8, 11-inning victory, the Indians (55-48) only needed a leadoff first-inning homer by Michael Bourn off Yu Darvish to defeat Texas (56-48) again Saturday, 1-0.

"Everyone's pretty happy about (1-0 games)," said starter Justin Masterson, who combined with two relievers for a five-hitter. "... You feel like you're getting out there. Sometimes that helps keep that rhythm you have.'

The Indians, winners of three in a row to remain three back of AL Central-leading Detroit, are riding their best stretch in Cleveland since a 14-game run April 3-May 10, 2011.

Another victory would give Cleveland its first three-game home sweep in this series since Aug. 12-14, 1980. It would also mark the Indians' first 5-0 single-season run versus Texas since Aug. 10-25, 1973.

Cleveland's Ubaldo Jimenez (7-5, 4.49 ERA) gets the ball after suffering his first defeat in eight starts, 2-1 at Seattle on Monday when he surrendered two runs in 5 2-3 innings.

Jimenez, 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA over his previous seven outings, was tagged for two homers after giving up one in his last four starts combined. He also walked four in his 110-pitch outing.

"The main goal is to minimize the mistakes," Jimenez said.

The only significant error he made in a 5-2 victory at Texas on June 12 was serving up a solo homer to Leonys Martin. That was the only run, and one of four hits, Texas had off Jimenez.

The Rangers' offense needs to improve as the club is batting .240 with 2.6 runs per game during a 3-11 skid that's dropped them five back of Oakland for the AL West lead. Texas hasn't been this far off the division lead since finishing 10 back of the division-champion Los Angeles Angels in 2009.

``I know we can do better, but I'm not frustrated,' manager Ron Washington said. ``When you get frustrated, you go blind and can't think, and I'm smart enough to know that.'

Rookie left fielder Engel Beltre had two hits Saturday in his second straight start, but Rangers manager Ron Washington said that David Murphy will return to the lineup Sunday. Murphy is 2 for 14 against the Indians this season, including 0 for 3 off Jimenez.

The Rangers will give the ball to Alexi Ogando (4-2, 3.13), who'll make his second start since missing more than a month with right shoulder inflammation. The right-hander went five innings in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees, giving up three runs and six hits.

"(Ogando) gave us five innings of stressful pitching," Washington told the Rangers' official website.

Ogando, though, has been outstanding against the Indians, recording a 0.84 ERA in eight appearances. He threw five scoreless innings of relief versus Cleveland last season after posting a 0.64 ERA while winning both starts in this series in 2011.

The Indians have outscored the Rangers 22-12 since losing 6-3 in their first matchup this year June 10.

While the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins showed signs of improvement at the plate, they might have a more difficult time against two of baseball's top young pitchers.

The Pirates look for their sixth win in eight games Sunday when Gerrit Cole opposes All-Star Jose Fernandez in battle of impressive rookies in Miami.

After getting shut out by the Marlins (39-63) on Friday, Pittsburgh (61-41) bounced back by scoring seven runs for the second time in three games in Saturday's 7-4 victory.

Catcher Michael McKenry filled in nicely for the injured Russell Martin with a career-high four hits and two RBIs, while Neil Walker added three hits and two RBIs to help the Pirates win for the fifth time in seven games.

McKenry tweaked his left knee and could only trot up the first-base line after grounding to short to open the ninth inning. That could be a concern if Martin isn't able to return from his own knee injury Sunday.

"It's all right,' McKenry said. "It's just kind of stuck.'

All-Star Andrew McCutchen went 2 for 4 with a triple to end a 2-for-16 slide and Starling Marte was 2 for 5 with a double after going 2 for 28 in his previous seven games.

Pittsburgh, which hit .107 (9 for 84) with runners in scoring position over its previous nine games, went 6 for 17 in those situations Saturday.

The Pirates face a tough test as they look to build on that performance against Fernandez (6-5, 2.74 ERA), who didn't miss a beat in his first start of the second half.

Fernandez struck out eight while holding Colorado to two runs and five hits over seven innings in Tuesday's 4-2 road win.

The right-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs in nine starts since the start of June, with the Marlins winning seven of those outings. He's 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 59 1-3 innings over that span.

Fernandez has been even better at Marlins Park, going 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA in nine outings there.

This will be only the third road start for Cole (5-3, 3.51), who is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA in those two games.

The right-hander snapped a three-start losing streak overall with the best outing of his career Tuesday. He limited Washington to one run and two hits over seven innings with one walk and four strikeouts.

"I mean, he's got that overpowering stuff," said Martin. "When he doesn't give too many free passes and he's able to throw strikes in good locations, he's a tough at-bat.'

Cole hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his eight starts, but the slumping Pirates had given him just four runs of support during his three-start skid.

He'll try to help Pittsburgh complete a 6-4 road trip with a victory over the Marlins, who have batted .283 while winning four of six.

Miami's Giancarlo Stanton continued his tear by going 3 for 4 with a double Saturday. He's 7 for 10 with a homer, three doubles and three RBIs in his last three games.

Teammate Logan Morrison added three hits to break out of a 3-for-28 slump.

                          • Preview: Red Sox (62-43) at Orioles (58-47)
                            Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                            Date: July 28, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

It's been more than two years since the Boston Red Sox won two straight against the Baltimore Orioles.

Just as surprising is Jon Lester's lack of success lately in this matchup.

The visiting Red Sox look to avoid a seventh consecutive series loss to the Orioles on Sunday.

Wins against Baltimore have been very hard to come by lately for Boston, which had lost six of eight in the season series and 25 of 35 overall to the Orioles before Stephen Drew homered twice and matched a career high with five RBIs in a 7-3 victory Saturday.

"The past couple of games, I've felt good at the plate but had no luck,' Drew said. "It's just good to turn around and have a good outcome. It was also a good win. That's what we really needed.'

The Red Sox (62-43) have lost the last six series to their AL East rivals and haven't won two in a row over the Orioles during that 35-game span. Their last back-to-back wins against them came during a 7-0 run April 28-July 18, 2011.

Boston posted a 71-28 record against Baltimore starting in 2006 and ending with those seven consecutive wins.

Lester was responsible for a good portion of that success, going 14-0 with a 2.33 ERA in his first 17 starts against the Orioles. But he's 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in the past four, allowing five runs and nine hits over five innings in a 6-3 loss at Camden Yards on June 16.

Lester (9-6, 4.50 ERA) has a chance for three straight quality starts for the first time since May. He has a 3.55 ERA in his last two outings after compiling a 7.08 mark in his previous six.

Extra rest seemed to help the left-hander Tuesday in a 6-2 win over Tampa Bay. He allowed two runs with no walks over 6 1-3 innings and matched a season high with eight strikeouts. Lester had been scheduled to make his first start after the All-Star break on Sunday, but that was delayed to give him nine days of rest.

"He was strong,' manager John Farrell said of Lester, who has a 5.37 ERA in 11 starts on regular rest in 2013. "It seems like the added rest did him some good."

Catcher Matt Wieters is batting a team-best .378 (14 for 37) against Lester, but backup Taylor Teagarden, who is 4 for 38 (.105) this season, is expected to start.

Saturday's loss was the fourth in five games for the Orioles (58-47), who had their home-run streak against the Red Sox stopped at 11 games - one shy of the club record.

Chris Davis went 1 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts, the 21st consecutive game in which the major league home run leader has struck out. He has fanned eight times in his last three contests and hasn't homered since hitting No. 37 on July 14.

Asked how he was feeling at the plate, Davis replied, "I felt really awesome, like a unicorn riding through a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end of it. You know, you go through slumps during the season. I was very fortunate to have very few in the first half.'

Struggling Jason Hammel (7-7, 5.20) will try to reverse his own fortunes and help the Orioles avoid their first series home loss since May.

Hammel is 0-5 with a 5.47 ERA in nine starts since beating Washington on May 27. He allowed 10 hits for the second straight start and walked a season-high four, but limited Kansas City to three runs over six innings in a 3-2 loss Tuesday.

Hammel went 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox last season, both at Fenway Park.

Davis Ortiz, though, is 6 for 14 with a homer against him, and Shane Victorino (5 for 11) and Dustin Pedroia (4 for 9) also have fared well in this matchup.

Rookie Taylor Jordan has, for the most part, given the Washington Nationals successively longer outings since an uneven big-league debut against the New York Mets last month.

New York's new six-man rotation will include Carlos Torres, who has been tremendous in two 2013 starts.

One right-hander considered a promising prospect opposes another who can only be called a journeyman when these disappointing teams complete a four-game set Sunday in Washington.

These NL East clubs, separated by three games in the standings, appear to be well out of contention.

Fans of both will be looking to the future and Nationals supporters should be excited by the progress of Jordan (0-3, 3.68 ERA).

The 24-year-old right-hander started the year in Class A Potomac before a 7-0 mark with an 0.83 ERA at Double-A Harrisburg helped pave the way for his promotion to the big leagues June 29.

Jordan gave up three runs - one earned - over 4 1-3 innings in a 5-1 loss to New York that day.

Although he remains winless, Jordan has increased his innings pitched to 5 2-3, 5 2-3, six and 7 2-3 in his latest outing, a 5-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday in which he gave up five runs.

Unlike last month, Jordan won't be in awe of the Mets (46-55).

"I'm starting not to really care who's up to bat," said Jordan, who will be shut down once he pitches between 20 and 30 more innings. "I still have to make my pitches. "

When Jordan last faced New York, Torres (1-1, 0.94) was in the Mets' bullpen.

He has allowed two runs over 11 innings in two starts made possible due to injuries to Jonathon Niese and Shaun Marcum.

Torres hadn't started since Aug, 3, 2010, before these outings. New York is his third team in four big-league seasons. He's part of a six-man rotation the Mets are using now to give Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler extra rest.

Starting pitching has been the story of this series. Mets starters have allowed five runs over 22 innings while Nationals starters have yielded seven over 20 2-3.

Home runs have proved decisive. The Mets went deep three times in Friday's 11-0 rout before Ryan Zimmerman had the game's only homer in the nightcap of that doubleheader, a game-winning solo shot in a 2-1 victory.

Washington (51-54) scored all of its runs via the longball in Saturday's 4-1 win. Ian Desmond and Denard Span hit back-to-back homers in the second inning and Bryce Harper added a two-run shot in the third.

The Nationals have homered 12 times over their last eight games after a six-game drought.

"One thing we know that they can do is they're a dangerous club, they've got good power," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Collins is hoping for a split before the Mets head to Miami for another four-game set Monday.

"We're 1-2 right now, we win tomorrow we're 2-2," he said. "There's nothing to accept. You've just gotta keep playing, bounce back, we've got a lot of road trip left."

The Kansas City Royals are on the verge of matching their longest winning streak of the season, thanks in large part to superb pitching.

The rotation has been particularly dominant.

Bruce Chen looks to keep the Royals rolling with another commanding performance Sunday against the last-place Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City (50-51) is on a five-game winning streak for the first time since a season-high six-game run from June 5-10.

The Royals' current surge has been powered by their pitching staff, which has compiled a 1.00 ERA. The rotation has been especially excellent with a 0.79 ERA.

James Shields tossed seven scoreless innings in Friday's 5-1 win and Wade Davis was even better Saturday, going 7 1-3 while allowing four hits in Kansas City's 1-0 victory.

Now it's up to Chen (4-0, 1.97 ERA) to help the Royals complete the sweep. The left-hander has been outstanding in two starts since entering the rotation in place of an ineffective Luis Mendoza, who beat him out for a starting spot in spring training.

The only run the 36-year-old has allowed in 12 innings of two starts came on a solo homer in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Baltimore.

"His fastball - he'll throw one at 83 (mph) and then one at 87, and the 87 looks like 94 mixed in with the slow curveball, the changeup, the two-seamer. So he does a great job of on and off the gas with his velocities," manager Ned Yost told the team's official website.

Chen is 3-1 with a 3.60 ERA over his last five games - four starts - versus Chicago. However, that defeat came in his most recent visit to the South Side on Sept. 8, when he surrendered five runs and three homers in six innings of a 5-4 loss.

The White Sox (40-61) haven't been nearly that productive at the plate lately, getting 14 hits in this series with their only run coming on a Conor Gillaspie's solo shot Friday.

Gordon Beckham, 0 for 6 in this series, is mired in a five-game slump during which he's gone 1 for 21. He had been hitting .396 in the 12 games prior to this stretch.

Beckham is 4 for 27 with a homer against Chen.

Hector Santiago (3-6, 3.38) will take the mound hoping to replicate his most recent start against the Royals. He went a season-high eight innings in Kansas City on June 21, allowing three hits and a run in a 9-1 win.

He's 0-1 with a 4.18 ERA in five starts since.

Santiago was charged with a 6-2 loss to visiting Detroit on Tuesday, allowing six runs - three earned - with six strikeouts and a career high-tying five walks in six innings. The defense didn't provide much help with a season-high four errors.

He may not have to deal with Lorenzo Cain, who has three hits and two RBIs over the past two games. The center fielder exited in the eighth inning Saturday due to tightness in his left groin after crashing into the outfield wall while taking a hit away from Jeff Keppinger in the seventh.

"He's got a little bit of a groin strain, why we took him out," Yost said. "He's day to day. Probably rest him (Sunday) because we've got an off day on Monday, grab him two days right there."
