  • Preview: Cubs (43-53) at Diamondbacks (51-47)
    Game: 1
    Venue: Chase Field
    Date: July 22, 2013 9:40 PM EDT

The weekend has come and gone, and Matt Garza is still donning a Chicago Cubs uniform.

The Arizona Diamondbacks can't be too happy about that.

Garza carries a career-high five-start winning streak into the opener of a four-game road set against the Diamondbacks on Monday night.

While rumors picked up Friday regarding a possible deal with Texas, Garza (6-1, 3.17 ERA) remains with Chicago (43-53) for the time being. The right-hander is still likely to be moved before the July 31 trade deadline, but he's scheduled to take the mound Monday.

"All I know is he's pitching, and I guess if we get a phone call and something changes, that's the way it is," manager Dale Sveum told MLB's official website. "He's been the ultimate pro about everything. ... He's handled it extremely well, obviously, by his performance on the mound."

Garza has recorded a 1.47 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 36 2-3 innings during his winning streak. He allowed a season-high 10 hits but managed to limit the damage July 13 in his final start before the All-Star break, surrendering two runs in 6 2-3 innings in a 6-4 win over St. Louis.

While this process surely hasn't been easy, Garza continues to remain focused on the mound.

"When (the phone) rings, then it will be real," he said. "Right now it's just rumors. It is what it is; you just keep going about your business."

Garza gave up two runs in seven innings to beat Arizona 7-2 on May 31, improving to 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in the series. Paul Goldschmidt is 0 for 6 in their matchups, and Cody Ross is 1 for 12.

The Diamondbacks (51-47) had been limited to four runs during a three-game losing streak before bouncing back Sunday with a 3-1 win at San Francisco. Martin Prado went 3 for 4 with two runs and Ross added two hits and two RBIs.

Arizona now turns to promising rookie Tyler Skaggs (2-1, 4.03), who has posted mixed results in five big league starts this year. The 22-year-old left-hander has thrown a combined 14 scoreless innings in his wins, but he owns a 7.80 ERA in his other three outings.

Skaggs didn't have his best stuff in a 7-5, 14-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 10, yielding three runs, eight hits and three walks in a season-low 4 1-3 innings.

"I missed my spot a few times and you can't do that up here," said Skaggs, who was sent down to Class A Visalia during the break in order to stay on his regular turn in the rotation. "You have to go out there and throw strikes."

Skaggs will need to be careful against Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who is batting .371 with 17 homers and 36 RBIs in his last 28 games in the series. Soriano is hitting .312 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs over a 19-game stretch overall.

Chicago is looking to avoid a third straight loss after falling 4-3 at Colorado on Sunday. Anthony Rizzo clubbed his 14th homer and Starlin Castro collected a season-high four hits, but the Cubs went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Chicago was 1 for 24 in such situations over the weekend.

"That's what I said coming out of the break, we've got to get better with men in scoring position," Sveum said. "Obviously we're in the same boat."

The Cubs have gone 10 for 63 (.159) with runners in scoring position during a 1-6 stretch at Chase Field.

    • Preview: Twins (41-54) at Angels (46-50)
      Game: 1
      Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
      Date: July 22, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

Joe Blanton hasn't been shy about his struggles this season, and his explosion in the dugout after his latest dismal performance proved he won't be able to endure many more.

He takes the mound again Monday night as the Los Angeles Angels look to win a sixth straight home meeting with the Minnesota Twins.

Blanton signed a two-year, $15 million deal in the offseason and was supposed to help soften the blow after Los Angeles lost starters Dan Haren, Ervin Santana and Zack Greinke.

Instead, Blanton (2-12, 5.53 ERA) has been a major disappointment while recording the most defeats in the AL. The right-hander appeared to be getting on track, posting a 2.14 ERA in his previous three outings before going 0-2 with an 8.59 ERA over his final three starts before the All-Star break.

He gave up four runs and walked four in four innings of a 4-3 loss to Seattle in his latest start July 14. After exiting that miserable outing, Blanton threw down the dugout's water cooler and exchanged words with catcher Chris Iannetta and pitching coach Mike Butcher.

"Any time things aren't going good it kind of brings things to a little volcano, a little head, whatever you want to call it,' Blanton said. "Things aren't going well. You try and do more out there competing with everything. Things happen. Guys get mad at giving up runs, striking out. It's part of it sometimes.'

Blanton likely wasn't pleased with his first outing this season versus Minnesota either, as he allowed four runs and nine hits - including homers to Joe Mauer and Trevor Plouffe - in an 8-2 defeat April 15.

Los Angeles, though, has won five straight home meetings with the Twins and will look to bounce back after falling 6-0 to Oakland on Sunday. Iannetta had two hits and Mike Trout extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games for the Angels (46-50), who have dropped four of six.

Minnesota (41-54) had won four straight before falling 7-1 to Cleveland in Sunday's series finale. Brian Dozier had both of the team's hits, with his double leading off the seventh breaking up Justin Masterson's no-hit bid.

Plouffe struck out twice before being lifted for a pinch-hitter and has fanned in six straight at_bats.

"In a situation like that, you just have to battle. I tip my cap to the guys out there," said bench coach Terry Steinbach, who was the Twins' acting manager as Ron Gardenhire recovered from a stomach flu. "They were doing the best they could, but (Masterson) just had his good stuff going."

Minnesota will look to get back on track with help from Samuel Deduno, who went into the All-Star break on a high note after allowing one run in seven innings of a 4-1 win at Yankee Stadium on July 13.

Deduno (5-4, 3.61) has tossed at least six innings in eight of his 10 starts and has allowed fewer than three earned runs six times.

"With his stuff, he's the guy you want out there," Gardenhire said. "His ball moves all over the place, he gets good breaking balls and he was in control pretty much the whole game."

The right-hander has never faced the Angels, though Josh Hamilton is 2 for 6 with a solo homer off Deduno.

      • Preview: Indians (52-46) at Mariners (46-52)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Safeco Field
        Date: July 22, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians haven't lost any ground in the AL Central despite opening the second half with a subpar showing against one of baseball's worst teams. They now face the club with the longest winning streak in the majors.

The Indians try to hand the Mariners their first loss in seven games in Monday night's opener in Seattle.

After a pair of 3-2 losses at Minnesota following the All-Star break, Cleveland (52-46) salvaged the final game of the set with Sunday's 7-1 victory to end a four-game road skid.

Jason Kipnis hit a two-run homer - his 15th of the season - to lead the offense, while right-hander Justin Masterson allowed one hit over seven innings to earn his 11th win.

"You've seen the last couple games. We were just a little bit sloppy kind of all the way around," Masterson told baseball's official website. "I think (this) is a nice one - a little kick in the pants."

The Indians remain only 1 1/2 games behind division-leading Detroit, which also dropped two of three in Kansas City.

Cleveland swept a four-game home series from the Mariners from May 17-20, but appears to be making its first trip to Seattle at the wrong time.

The Mariners (46-52) extended their season-best winning streak to six with a 12-5 victory at Houston on Sunday.

After winning Saturday despite having only one hit, Nick Franklin keyed a seven-run second inning with a grand slam and Dustin Ackley added three hits and two RBIs.

"We've been swinging it well and it was just one of those adjustment periods we had to go through and get back after it the next day," Franklin said.

The Mariners have hit 11 homers and outscored their opponents 44-20 during their longest winning streak since posting eight consecutive victories Aug. 14-22.

They'll try continue that production against right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (7-4, 4.56 ERA), who is 3-0 with a 3.75 ERA over his last seven outings.

Jimenez, however, didn't get through the fifth inning in his last start - his shortest since June 7 - yielding four runs in four-plus innings in a 6-4 win over Kansas City on July 14.

Jimenez is 2-0 with a 4.21 ERA in four career starts versus the Mariners. He's faced them once this season, striking out nine and giving up two runs in five-plus innings before leaving without a decision in a 6-3 win May 17.

Michael Saunders is 4 for 8 with a home run lifetime when facing Jimenez and looks to extend a 10-game hitting streak overall.

Seattle's Aaron Harang (4-8, 5.38 ERA) hopes to bounce back from one of his worst starts, allowing seven runs, eight hits and a season-high three walks over five-plus innings in an 11-4 loss to Boston on July 10.

The right-hander had gone 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his previous five starts.

Harang is 4-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 10 career starts against the Indians, though he hasn't faced them since 2010 when he was with Cincinnati.

Michael Bourn has seen Harang the most of any Indian, going 7 for 17 with a triple and two doubles against him since the start of the 2010 season. He also went 7 for 18 in the first series of the season against the Mariners.

Kipnis went 8 for 17 with a home run in that set, leaving him with a .419 average, two homers and six RBIs over a seven-game hitting streak against Seattle.

        • Preview: Reds (55-43) at Giants (45-52)
          Game: 1
          Venue: AT&T Park
          Date: July 22, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Tim Lincecum has tweaked his delivery, altered his workload between starts, changed his diet, and even his hair, trying just about anything in recent years to rediscover his old Cy Young form.

Maybe his first career no-hitter will do the trick at last.

"I think any time you throw that well, which he's been throwing the ball well even before that, should do a lot for his confidence,' San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's in a good place. His delivery and where he's at as far as confidence, I like where Timmy's at.'

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner will pitch again Monday night for the Giants against the Cincinnati Reds, giving the home fans at AT&T Park a chance to cheer his July 13 no-hitter at San Diego that provided the first-half highlight for the reigning World Series champions.

Lincecum took some time to celebrate the latest special moment in what has become an up-and-down career, albeit not for long.

The right-hander returned to his hometown of Seattle during the All-Star break for some relaxation and time away, relishing that remarkable 148-pitch gem.

Now, he's sticking to his mantra of not getting too high or too low about a particular outing and moving on to the next with the same, steady approach. He'll be pitching on eight days rest Monday.

"I had my time to enjoy it and celebrate it with my family and friends. That time has passed and it's time to move on and get ready for my next start,' Lincecum said.

Lincecum has increased his workload between starts, rediscovered his consistent delivery and found himself in a nice groove again - at last, a month after turning 29.

"I'm happy with the progress that I've made and the differences and the changes I've made to my preparation in between starts to kind of help put me in the situation I'm at,' he said. "I'm not saying the no-hitter or anything like that, but with confidence going out there and with a lot more conviction in my pitches.'

He is 5-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 19 starts for the Giants (45-52), but that history-making win against the Padres snapped a six-start winless stretch in which he went 0-4.

This is the same guy whose problems a year ago earned him a bullpen spot for the postseason rather than a familiar place in the rotation. He shined in the new role, though made it clear he planned to work back to the top form he exhibited at Petco Park.

"He threw a great game, but not just that, how tough he was - 148 pitches ain't easy,' fellow pitcher Ryan Vogelsong said. "It should be a real good confidence booster for him going into the second half. That was an impressive outing, 148 pitches or not.'

Lincecum is still looking for his first win against the Reds (55-43) in his fifth try after giving up three runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 3-0 loss at Cincinnati on July 2. He's 0-2 with a 6.85 ERA in the series.

Not that he is thinking about such statistics or any hype surrounding his no-no, the 15th in franchise history and No. 7 since the franchise moved West to San Francisco in 1958.

Getting back on track takes time, something he has stressed with each start and each positive step he makes.

"I knew this was going to be a process and it was going to take time,' Lincecum said. "It just goes back to believing in yourself and believing in what that's going to take to get through it. I'm not saying that I'm through anything or trying to make it through anything. I'm just trying to get better every day, whether it's coming in here and studying more or making sure I'm on top of my relationship with my catcher and the things I want to try to do.'

The Reds won their first two against Pittsburgh over the weekend before losing Sunday's finale 3-2, dropping their deficit to five games behind St. Louis in the NL Central and three behind the Pirates for the first wild card.

They have a 4 1/2-game lead for the second wild-card spot, but now hit the road for an 11-game trip. Cincinnati is 5-11 in its last 16 games away from Great American Ball Park.

Bronson Arroyo (8-7, 3.42) has a 4.98 ERA on the road, nearly double his 2.58 home mark, but he was outstanding in his latest start in enemy territory. The right-hander held Atlanta to three hits and a run over seven innings July 12 in a 4-2 win.

He's 6-0 with a 1.45 ERA in his last nine starts against NL opponents, and there might be no one manager Dusty Baker would rather turn to in this situation. The Reds are 8-0 in Arroyo's starts this season following a loss.

"I try not to pitch any different, but to be honest, sometimes there's an urgency to the mood in the clubhouse," Arroyo told the team's official website. "This game is very difficult and nobody can go out there and just say, 'I'm going to win the ballgame today.' So it's partly probably luck and a bit of trying to just really want to not let your ballteam slide downhill again."

Lincecum also will be trying to help his team bounce back from a loss after the Giants failed to complete a sweep of Arizona with Sunday's 3-1 loss.

Bochy knows Lincecum will be ready, even after the highest pitch count of his career.

"You enjoy it, you savor the great outings but you have to understand you put that behind you and you have to be ready to go the next day, whether you're a position player or a pitcher,' Bochy said.

"If you have a rough outing, you've got to wash that one off.'

Following the dismissal of their hitting coach, the Washington Nationals showed some signs of turning things around offensively against the best pitching staff in baseball.

The Nationals will try to end to their struggles at the plate and snap a four-game losing streak Tuesday night when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates, who could be without their All-Star closer for an extended period.

With the team ranking near the bottom of the major leagues with 3.71 runs per game and a .240 batting average, Washington (48-51) fired hitting coach Rick Eckstein before Monday's 6-5 loss in the series opener.

Eckstein was replaced by Rick Schu, who will be asked to help turn around an offense that has gone 6 for 75 (.080) with runners in scoring position and averaged 2.6 runs per game during this 2-9 stretch.

The Nationals were on their way to another lackluster performance with one run through the first six innings Monday, but Jayson Werth hit two-run homers in the seventh and ninth.

Werth has four homers in his last two games and is hitting .431 since July 4.

"There's a lot of character on this ballclub, there's no quit, there's a lot of fight,' manager Davey Johnson said. "By and large everybody swung the bat pretty good.'

Pittsburgh's Vin Mazzaro had to come in to get the final out for his first career save with the tying run on second base after closer Jason Grilli left with an injury.

"Right now it's right forearm discomfort," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We're going to wait and see how he feels (Tuesday)."

The Pirates (58-39), whose 3.09 ERA is baseball's best, will try to win a third straight by sending rookie Gerrit Cole (4-3, 3.89 ERA) to the mound.

Cole became the first Pittsburgh pitcher since Nick Maddox in 1907 to win the first four starts of his career, but he's received just four runs of support during a three-start losing streak.

The right-hander surrendered three first-innings runs before settling in for four more scoreless frames in a 4-2 loss to the Mets on July 14.

"It's the growing pains of a young pitcher,' Hurdle said. "His command wasn't good and the changeup didn't come into play until the 35th pitch of the game even though it had been a good pitch for him in his previous outing.'

The Nationals counter with their own rookie right-hander as Taylor Jordan (0-2, 3.32) searches for his first big-league win in his fifth start.

Although he hasn't yielded more than three earned runs in any of his four outings, Taylor has gotten a total of seven runs from the slumping Washington offense.

The Pirates hit six solo homers over the weekend while dropping two of three in Cincinnati, but Andrew McCutchen hit two-run shots in his first two plate appearances Monday.

The All-Star outfielder is 10 for 25 with five home runs in his last six games. He's 17 for 33 with five homers and 11 RBIs in his last eight games at Nationals Park.

"Every player always has a ballpark he seems to hit at better than other places,' McCutchen said. "I guess mine happens to be here.'

The Pirates, however, continue to struggle with a major league-worst .222 average with runners in scoring position after going hitless in 10 chances Monday.
