  • Preview: Giants (41-50) at Padres (41-52)
    Game: 2
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: July 12, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

When the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres meet again Friday night, one pitcher starts for the first time since his misdemeanor charge was publicized, while the other takes a major league mound for the first time in nearly two years.

Chad Gaudin gets the ball for the Giants as they go for a fourth straight win over the Padres, who will send Sean O'Sullivan to the hill.

Gaudin (2-1, 2.44 ERA) was charged with open and gross lewdness July 3 for a January incident in which he allegedly touched a woman's face and breast at a Las Vegas hospital. A statement released Wednesday by his lawyer said Gaudin denies any wrongdoing.

"It doesn't affect the club at all," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website. "I don't have any comment on it, because I just got wind of it a few minutes ago."

The right-hander will try to build on his last outing in which he limited the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run and four hits while striking out nine - his most in four years - over a season-high seven innings in a 4-1 loss Sunday. Gaudin, who didn't get the decision, made his first appearance since missing more than two weeks with a right elbow contusion.

O'Sullivan's start will be his first in the major leagues since Sept. 27, 2011, with Kansas City. He went 10-14 with a 6.13 ERA in 43 games - 34 starts - over four seasons for the Royals and Angels.

Friday also gives the San Diego native a chance to pitch for the team he grew up rooting for. O'Sullivan told the team's official website it was a "dream come true," admitting he may put extra pressure on himself.

"It's hard not to want to do so well," said O'Sullivan, 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Tucson. "I'll try to put that as far back in as I can and go out there and play baseball."

San Francisco (41-50) ended a four-game slide with a 4-2 win over San Diego (41-52) on Thursday. The Giants, 3-14 in their last 17, haven't won back-to-back games since June 18-19.

They have the chance to do so again thanks in part to Pablo Sandoval, who homered for the first time in 101 at_bats. He's 11 for 30 in seven games against San Diego this year with two of his nine home runs.

The Padres have scored 33 runs while losing 12 of 13, but could get some help Friday with the expected return of first baseman Yonder Alonso. Batting .284 with six homers and 29 RBIs in 54 games, he's missed the last 34 contests after suffering a fractured hand in late May.

Alonso, though, is hitting .171 in 25 career games against San Francisco.

Gaudin recorded a victory in his lone start versus San Diego in 2004 and gave up one run in 4 1-3 innings of two relief appearances against the Padres this year.

O'Sullivan won his only start against the Giants, holding them to one run over seven innings of an 8-1 victory with the Angels on June 16, 2009.

                  • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- 31 first-time All-Stars this year; introductions will be lot of fun to see, lot of smiling faces.

-- Ad on 3rd hole at Scottish Open: Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer. I'm thinking you wouldn't see that ad at Augusta National.

-- Home side is 17-2 in Tim Hudson's starts; Braves won all nine of his home starts.

-- NHL teams are having developmental camps right now for their younger prospects; didn't the season just end?

-- Speaking of which, I'll be at NBA Summer League games this week here in Las Vegas. Lot of players bucking the odds to make it to the league, or at least make a nice living overseas.

                    -- Matt Moore's first 11 starts: 8-0, 2.18. Next three: 0-3, 14.59. His last five starts: 5-0, 1.91. Go figure.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Greetings from the desert..........

First thing I'll do is apologize in advance because I'm on vacation, so timing of these posts will be more erratic than usual. On to today's thoughts......
                    13) Watched some of the Red Sox-Seattle game on the flight out here on a laptop; technology is good.

The Southwest flight crew went out of their way to make the 5.5-hour trip more fun. I won a free drink because I had the oldest penny of anyone on the flight (1943; who knew???).

                    12) More good news: I can see the fountains in front of Bellagio from my hotel suite; I highly recommend Elara Tower if you're coming to Las Vegas.

                    11) Glad to see Pedro Alvarez was named to Home Run Derby; he deserves it. Will also make David Wright's stay in Pittsburgh this weekend a little more pleasant. Pirate fans weren't too happy that Wright passed on selecting the Pirates' 3B to take his childhood buddy, Michsel Cuddyer.

                    10) Fans of small market teams (like me) tend to be paranoid about any slights, whether real or perceived; Royals' fans are still mad that Billy Butler was left out of HR Derby at Kauffman Stadium last summer.

                    9) The host team for the All-Star Game should always have a player in Home Run Derby. Adds to the excitement of the event.

                    8) I hope Joe Theismann owns a part of Super Beta Prostate; good Lord, those commercials are on a lot.

                    7) SEC football press conferences are on ESPNU next week; good primer for the season, also fun to watch how different coaches treat the media. SEC football is serious business; 4 of the 14 teams have new coaches this year.

                    6) Did I mention that Jack in the Box serves breakfast 24 hours a day? Some people go for fancy restaurants, I go for In 'n Out burgers and Jack in the Box. In 'n Out has the best milkshakes I've ever had.

                    5) Steve Alford makes more money than Roy Williams; why? Alford is a pretty good coach, but his resume of actual accomplishments is thin-- he is still, to an extent, living off his reputation as a great college player.

                    4) Was reading a cool story about a man who died and donated his organs, saving four other people's lives. How excellent is it to have parts of your body live on in other people? If anyone ever got one of my organs, they'd suddenly be watching ESPN 10 hours a day and eating a lot of pizza.

                    3) Good move by the Knicks, re-signing PG Pablo Prigioni, who made New York a better team LY with his selfless play and soliud ball distribution.

                    2) Devils' winger Ilya Kovalchuk has quit the NHL so he can go home and play in Russia; in doing so, he voided the last 12 years of his NHL contract, worth $77M. He must've really hated living here.

                    1) Andy Kennedy got a lucrative contract extension from Ole Miss this spring for one reason: his team made the NCAA tournament, then won a game in that tournament. The #1 reason that happened was the strong play of Marshall Henderson, whose off-court life has had some problems- from what I read, Ole Miss coaches have tried very hard to help the kid, who has failed multiple drug tests, but at some point, Henderson has to help himself.

How far do you go to help the young man? When do you pull the plug on him? I'm guessing if he is shown the door, it'll be the school itself and not the basketball program that does it, but if that happens, it'll be a sad chapter in what should be a happier story.

                            • Preview: Twins (37-53) at Yankees (51-42)
                              Game: 2
                              Venue: Yankee Stadium
                              Date: July 13, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

The New York Yankees are 5-0 against the Minnesota Twins so it's probably not a surprise that Phil Hughes' lone victory over his last five outings came in the season series.

Hughes will look to end a career-worst five-game home slide and outduel Samuel Deduno for the second time this month Saturday.

New York (51-42) is 9-8 in its last 17 games, with the majority of its victories in that span against Minnesota. The Yankees swept four on the road from the Twins (37-53) from July 1-4.

Hughes (4-8, 4.55 ERA) earned a 7-3 victory July 2 as he yielded one run over seven innings to improve to 4-1 with a 2.33 ERA in six career starts against Minnesota, including one playoff outing.

Deduno (4-4, 3.90) will oppose Hughes once again after giving up three runs in six innings in his second career start against the Yankees. He exited the first one Sept. 26 after recording five outs due to irritation in his left eye.

Hughes, meanwhile, has posted an 8.22 ERA in losing his last five starts in the Bronx. He gave up two runs over four innings Monday in an outing cut short by a rain delay - a 5-1 home defeat to Kansas City.

The right-hander, who went 11-4 with a 3.74 ERA at home in 2012, has fared well against Twins stars Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. Including the postseason, Mauer is 5 for 20 against him and Morneau 2 for 13.

Deduno is 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in five road outings compared to 3-1 with a 2.33 mark at home. The right-hander seeks to avoid losing three straight starts for the first time after giving up five runs and a season-high 10 hits over six-plus innings Monday in a 7-4 loss at Tampa Bay.

Minnesota fell to 7-31 at New York since 2002 with a 2-0 loss Friday to open this three-game set.

The punchless Twins have dropped six straight and 12 of 13, and are averaging 3.0 runs in July for the AL's worst mark. They were hitless in 12 at_bats with runners in scoring position Friday.

"We had opportunities and we put men out there just didn't come up with any big hits again, kinda what our storyline's been," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Get them out there and missed opportunities.'

Robinson Cano had an RBI single in a two-run fifth inning. He's 8 for 17 with three homers and 10 RBIs in the season series and 1 for 4 in his career against Deduno - his teammate with the title-winning Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic this year.

Mauer and Morneau have done minimal damage by combining for five RBIs in the five meetings.

The injury-plagued Yankees decided Friday that Derek Jeter would not play the rest of the weekend after the shortstop strained his right quadriceps in his third at-bat Thursday in his season debut.

New York has also played its last two games without Travis Hafner, who is out with a left foot contusion although there's a chance he could see action Saturday.

"This group has been pretty good about moving on,' manager Joe Girardi said.

                              • Preview: White Sox (36-53) at Phillies (46-47)
                                Game: 2
                                Venue: Citizens Bank Park
                                Date: July 13, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

The Chicago White Sox have had a miserable season - particularly offensively - but their lineup seemed to find a groove while winning a road series this week.

The visiting White Sox will try to continue their hot hitting during Saturday's day-night doubleheader against a Philadelphia Phillies team in the midst of its most successful month of the season.

Chicago (36-53) is second-to-last in baseball with 336 runs, and its .301 on-base percentage and .384 slugging percentage are also near the bottom.

However, the White Sox hope the postponement of Friday's series opener won't halt any momentum earned after they scored 22 runs while taking two of three from AL Central-leading Detroit. Chicago won 6-3 on Thursday behind Josh Phegley's grand slam, his third homer in five games since making his big league debut.

Chicago hit .358 for the series, bolstered by Alex Rios' 6-for-6 performance in an 11-4 victory Tuesday. Alejandro De Aza was 7 for 14 and scored five runs while Dayan Viciedo drove in five.

It was the most runs Chicago scored in a series this year.

"You just keep going. It's a good feeling," manager Robin Ventura told the team's official website. "As low as it has been, you can have a series like this and beat a really good team."

The White Sox face a serious challenge against Philadelphia, which has won seven of 10. The Phillies (46-47) are on the verge of being .500 for the first time since they were 31-31 on June 7.

"It would be real good if we could win a series before we go into the break," manager Charlie Manuel said. "It's what we need to do, start winning series. If you do that every day, you're right there, you're sitting in good position."

Scheduled Phillies Game 1 starter Jonathan Pettibone (5-3, 3.84 ERA) has posted a 2.35 ERA in his last four starts and won the past two, matching a season high with six strikeouts in each. He limited the Braves to one run over 5 1-3 innings of a 7-3 win Sunday.

The right-hander has had mixed results in two interleague starts, posting a 1-1 record and 4.63 ERA.

Chicago counters with John Danks (2-6, 4.31), who is 1-2 in his last three starts despite a 2.53 ERA. Danks, who gave up three runs in seven innings of a 3-1 road loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday, has received six runs of support in the three games.

The left-hander has gone 7-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 19 interleague starts but is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in three such outings this season.

Taking the mound for Chicago in the nightcap, left-hander Hector Santiago (3-5, 3.49) has not earned a decision in three straight starts but has allowed two runs and five hits in each of the last two. He lasted 5 1-3 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Cubs on Monday.

The two runs Santiago allowed in that contest are his only surrendered over 12 1-3 innings while not earning a decision in two 2013 starts against the NL.

He'll be opposed by John Lannan (2-3, 4.23), who looks to build on Monday's outing when he gave up four hits in eight scoreless innings of a 3-2 win over Washington.

The left-hander last faced Chicago in 2010, when he gave up five runs in four innings of a 6-3 loss while with the Nationals.

The Phillies took three of four at home from Washington, capped by a 3-1 win Thursday.

Left-handed hitting Ben Revere, who went 2 for 4 and is batting .436 during a nine-game hit streak, has a .455 average against lefties in his last 11 games. He's batting .362 against those pitchers this season.

Teammate Delmon Young is batting .372 with two homers and four doubles off Danks.

The status of White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez is uncertain after he left Thursday's game with a cramp in his right leg. Ramirez, who has started all 89 games, is 7 for 18 over his last four.
