MLB betting: Scouting the toughest second-half schedules
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The All-Star break provides baseball bettors with a chance to reflect on the first half of the season and make adjustments moving forward.

Here are three teams that face the toughest road in the unofficial second half.

              Tampa Bay Rays +5.36 units

No team is hotter than the Rays over the past two weeks. Tampa Bay has won 12 of its last 13 games heading into a three-game set with the lowly Houston Astros but it will be tough sledding after the All-Star Break. The Rays will have played a league-high 53 home games by the break, leaving only 28 more contests at The Trop in the second half. Tampa Bay is 21-22 away from home (19-19-5 over/under) and kicks off the back stretch with a 10-game road trip following the All-Star festivities.

              New York Yankees +3.31 units

The Yankees have been ravaged by injuries all season long, but sit eight games over .500 heading into their final set of the first half with the Minnesota Twins. The health of captain Derek Jeter remains a concern but Michael Pineda and Alex Rodriguez are on the mend and nearing returns to the lineup. New York plays 37 of its final 67 games away from Yankee Stadium, but that may not be such a bad thing. The Yankees are one of the few teams that boast a winning road record (23-21).

              Los Angeles Dodgers -7.68 units

The Dodgers were one of the biggest disappointments in the bigs out of the gate, but Puig-mania has uplifted the squad to wins in 10 of its last 12 games. L.A. is just 1.5 games back of Arizona for the NL West lead heading into action Friday but only has a 22-25 record against divisional opponents. The Dodgers will only play 31 of their final 68 games at home and have a few tough interleague series’ remaining against strong AL East opponents (Blue Jays, Yankees, Red Sox, Rays).

-- In Friday's opener, the Marlins posted an eye-opening 8-3 win over the Nationals, handing Stephen Strasburg the worst loss of his career.

-- Washington had won five of six against Miami this season, all five by two or more runs, before last night's blowout loss.

-- The Nationals are 4-12 with Haren this season, which includes nine straight losses. To Haren's defense, if you can make one, the Nationals are scoring 2.69 runs per game in his starts.

-- Miami has gone 3-1 when it's listed as a favorite with Fernandez on the hill.

-- The Marlins have gone 5-2 in Fernandez's last seven starts, 4-0 at home during this run. The 'under' has cashed in all of his last four starts.

-- Prior to last night's easy 'over' ticket, the Nationals saw the 'under' cash in four straight.

Colorado at Los Angeles - 7:15 p.m. ET (Game 3/4)

Teams Starting Pitchers Team Record (Away/Home) Current Form

                Colorado Rockies T. Chatwood (5-2, 2.74) 45-49 (19-28) 2-2 L4

                Los Angeles Dodgers Z. Greinke (7-2, 3.91) 46-46 (26-22) 5-1 L6

                Betting Notes

-- The Dodgers and Rockies have met 11 times this season and Colorado holds a 6-5 edge.

-- Last night, Colorado beat Los Angeles 3-0 as a plus-210 road underdog, which snapped the Dodgers' five-game winning streak.

-- Despite the loss, Los Angeles has gone 16-4 since June 22. During this stretch, the team hasn't lost back-to-back games and 15 of the victories have been by two or more runs.

-- Chatwood has only faced the Dodgers once, which occured on July 3 and he was tagged for 11 hits (2 HRs) and five earned runs.

-- Greinke has won four straight starts and the team is 6-1 in his last seven appearances. Los Angeles is also 5-0 in his five starts at home this season, winning four by two or more.

-- The Dodgers have the best 'over' record (29-19) at home this season but the 'under' has cashed in the first two games of this series.

-- Total players should note that L.A. has been shutout five times this season before last night's bagel. In the first five instances, the 'over' cashed in the very next game while the Dodgers went 3-2.

-- The Rockies have seen the 'under' go 5-1 in their last six games.

-- Los Angeles could be without left fielder Yasel Puig (hip), who left Friday's game early.

                Betting Notes

-- Detroit beat Texas 7-3 on Friday, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Bad beat goes out to 'over' players who had a number of 9.5 runs. -- Before last night's outcome, Texas was 7-3 in its last 10 meetings against Detroit, which included a 2-1 record this season.

-- The Tigers have gone 15-3 with Sherzer on the hill, 8-1 at home. The lone loss (7-5) came on May 15 against Houston, when Detroit was installed as a minus-350 favorite, the biggest 'chalk' in MLB this season

-- Detroit has won seven straight with Sherzer and run-line bettors have watched the Tigers win six of those games by two or more. In the 15 wins, 12 have been by two or more runs.

                  • Twins believe in stability, but do they still believe in Gardenhire?

                    July 12, 2013 9:43 pm ET

NEW YORK -- The first thing Ron Gardenhire tells you is he's doing great.

He's not doing great, if you want to know the truth. His team is not winning, he's not sleeping and just this week, two Minneapolis columnists suggested that maybe it's time for the Twins to find a new manager.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan made an effort Friday to calm the situation, saying there's "no validity" to the idea that Gardenhire's job is in jeopardy. Many people who know the Twins well believe that not only will Gardenhire hold his job through this season, but that he'll still be managing the Twins next year, as well.

Normally, that would be the safe bet. There's no organization in baseball that values stability more than the Twins.

"We believe in it," Ryan said. "Yeah, we believe in continuity, stability and loyalty. The Pohlad family has always believed in that approach. They treasure loyalty. They treasure continuity."

Ryan insists that holds true for the younger Pohlads now in charge, just as it did when Carl Pohlad was alive.

"He passed that trait on in the bloodlines," Ryan said.

You wonder about Gardenhire now. The Twins lost 96 games last year and 99 the year before, and their recent struggles (11 losses in their last 12 games heading into the weekend) and overmatched roster suggest that they're headed to a similar finish this year.

Gardenhire's contract runs out at the end of the season, and as Scott Miller pointed out this spring, the Twins already "overhauled his coaching staff and effectively put the manager on double-secret probation."

Already, he has outlasted all but one of the managers who were employed in the major leagues in 2002, when he took over the Twins and wrote David Ortiz into the lineup as his cleanup hitter. Only Mike Scioscia has been on the job longer.

The other 28 big-league teams have changed managers a combined 93 times since then. Bob Melvin has managed four major-league teams since Gardenhire took over for Tom Kelly with the Twins.

The question now seems to be whether Gardenhire is the right manager to take the Twins into what seems to be a much brighter future, with the farm system now ranked among the best in the game, or even whether he wants to be that guy.

Those who know Gardenhire the best say that he absolutely wants to continue, and that his energy and enthusiasm for the job remain at a high level. He still seems to have strong support in the Twins clubhouse, and opposing managers and coaches still refer to him regularly as one of the game's best managers.

Still, it's hard for any manager to survive this much losing, even the manager of a team that puts such a value on continuity. Gardenhire understands that, and as he answered questions Friday, he seemed to accept that the issue will come up.

"Yes, I understand the situation, having so many kids on the roster, but my job is to win games, and we haven't been able to do that," he said. "That's my job, trying to figure it out. As long as they keep me here, that's my job.

"If they decide not to keep me, so be it, and I'll be listening to the games on the radio."

Gardenhire went on to say that he thinks the Twins are capable of a 10-game win streak.

"It would be a lot of fun to turn this thing around," he said.

Realistically, though, the turnaround for the Twins is more likely measured in months and years, rather than days. The Twins have some young talent on the roster, but players like Aaron Hicks, Oswaldo Arcia and Kyle Gibson are young and arguably not even ready to play in the big leagues.

The better talent is still to come, with Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton coming to New York this weekend only to play in Sunday's All-Star Futures Game.

The immediate question is more whether the Twins can add talent by trading away some players this month. Perhaps someone gives them something of value for Justin Morneau.

Asked Friday if there was anyone on the roster that he would rule out trading, Ryan said simply, "I shouldn't."

It's not a good team right now, and that was actually respected Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse's point in his column this week that opened with the words, "Goodbye Gardy."

Reusse actually complimented Gardenhire, suggesting that the manager shouldn't be forced to oversee what seems likely to be another ugly second half.

"If the Twins have any respect for long and meritorious service, they will not make you endure another death march to the finish," Reusse wrote.

What's clear, though, is that Gardenhire isn't looking for a way to escape another ugly Twins season. Instead, he's looking for the answers that will allow him to stay around, the opportunity to be the manager who benefits from the arrival of Sano, Buxton and others.

He's holding up well through difficult times, perhaps surprisingly well.

"I like managing," he said. "Best seat in the house. Hottest seat in the house, too."

He's not winning. He's not sleeping.

                    He's doing great.

                          Game: 3
                          Venue: Comerica Park

The visiting Texas Rangers have evened this weekend series since the Detroit Tigers again failed to win when an opponent started a left-hander.

Not only does Detroit have to face another southpaw next, it is also having problems winning of late when Justin Verlander takes the mound.

The Tigers will get their first look of the season at emerging Rangers lefty Martin Perez on Sunday while hoping Verlander can bounce back from a subpar effort.

Detroit (51-42) fell to 9-13 against left-handed starters as Derek Holland and two relievers held the Tigers to six hits in Saturday's 7-1 victory. The Rangers handed Tigers starter Max Scherzer his first defeat after a 13-0 start.
Perez (3-1, 2.08 ERA) had an inauspicious big league debut out of the bullpen June 27, 2012, in his lone career appearance against Detroit. He recorded two outs, allowed four runs and had a wild pitch in a 13-9 victory.

He figures to present a different proposition now. The Rangers have won all four of his starts since he was recalled June 22 from Triple-A Round Rock, with Perez going 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA.

The worst of those outings came Tuesday in Baltimore. Perez surrendered four runs - two earned - over six-plus innings, but got credit for an 8-4 victory and drew praise afterward.

"You can see why they're so high on Perez," Orioles manager Buck Showalter told the Rangers' official website. "He's got a really good arm, good changeup."

A Detroit lineup that produced no extra-base hits Saturday figures to be challenged by Perez. Twenty-nine of the 34 hits he's allowed this season have been singles.

The Tigers are just 10-9 when Verlander (9-6, 3.71) starts, including losses in four of his last six. The right-hander gave up five runs and a season-high 12 hits over seven-plus innings in Tuesday's 11-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

"Just one of those days that happens at this level, at this time of the year," Verlander said.

His poorest effort this season came when he gave up a season-worst eight runs over 2 2-3 innings in a 10-4 loss at Texas on May 16. He fell to 8-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 14 career starts against the Rangers, including two postseason outings.

Verlander is 5-2 with a 2.84 ERA in eight overall home starts versus Texas.

A.J. Pierzynski has faced Verlander more than any other hitter, going 19 for 74 (.257).

Nelson Cruz is just 2 for 17 against Verlander, but he came through with four hits Saturday as Texas (54-40) ended a three-game slide in which it totaled four runs.

Cruz is hitting .368 with 10 runs scored over his last nine games. He was 3 for 19 against Detroit in 2013 before Saturday.

Miguel Cabrera's major league-leading average against lefties is .420 as he faces Venezuelan countryman Perez for the second time after walking on four pitches last year. Perhaps the reigning AL MVP will be more vulnerable Sunday since he's hitting .333 in day games compared to .391 at night.

Another Venezuelan, Victor Martinez, went 0 for 4 on Saturday as his 14-game hit streak ended.

The New York Yankees' winning streak against the Minnesota Twins came to an end Saturday, but C.C. Sabathia's unbeaten streak against Minnesota is still alive.

New York hopes Sabathia's dominance over Minnesota continues Sunday in the series finale at Yankee Stadium.

Sabathia (9-7, 3.99 ERA) is 19-8 with a 2.95 ERA in 35 career regular and postseason starts against the Twins, tied for his most victories against any team. But he's been even more effective over the last 12, going 11-0 with a 2.01 ERA, including two playoff victories.

The left-hander most recently beat the Twins in a 3-2 road win July 3, striking out nine over seven innings while allowing two runs.

That was one of six straight victories by New York (51-43) over Minnesota, dating back to last season, until a 4-1 win by the Twins (38-53) on Saturday.

"That was needed," manager Ron Gardenhire, who was ejected in the eight inning after arguing a call at first base, said of the Twins' second victory in 14 games. "It's been a tough go here to get a win, so to see the guys smile again is very exciting."

The Twins had hit two home runs in their previous five games, but all four of the club's runs Saturday came on three homers off Phil Hughes. They'll hope for a similar effort against Sabathia, whose 20 homers allowed are among the most in baseball, though he's given up just six in his last 14 outings versus Minnesota.

Sabathia yielded two in a 3-1 loss to Kansas City on Tuesday, his second complete game of the year. He surrendered just one hit during the first five innings.

"It's frustrating. A loss is a loss no matter how many innings you throw, how many runs you give up," Sabathia told the team's official website. "If you lose the game, you lose the game and that's all that really matters."

Minnesota will counter with rookie Kyle Gibson (1-2, 7.27), who has struggled after a strong debut. He gave up two runs over six innings in a 6-2 victory over Kansas City on June 29, but has surrendered 12 runs in 11 1-3 innings over his past two starts.

All four runs he allowed in a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Tuesday came in the fourth inning, when he issued three of his four walks. The right-hander rebounded to retire six of the seven batters he faced in his final two frames.

"That was important after giving up the runs like that," Gardenhire said. "He was a little frustrated, the three walks in the inning."

Multiple Twins are still mired in significant offensive slumps despite Saturday's win, including Chris Parmelee and Justin Morneau. Parmelee was 0 for 3 to fall to 1 for 22 over his last seven games, while Morneau was 0 for 4 and is 5 for 43 in his last 12 contests.

Rookie outfielder Oswaldo Arcia got the day off after going hitless in 18 at_bats with 12 strikeouts in his previous four contests.

"He's got the starry eyes right now," Gardenhire said. "He's overwhelmed right now."

Even after Saturday's loss, New York has won 32 of the last 40 meetings, including the postseason.

Ubaldo Jimenez has pitched worse each successive time he has faced the Kansas City Royals this year heading into his fourth such outing.

Kansas City has to like its chances of avoiding a sweep by Jimenez's Cleveland Indians with James Shields on the mound.

The visiting Royals have had trouble hitting Jimenez this year but they have won eight straight outings by Shields heading into Sunday's matchup.

Jimenez (7-4, 4.37 ERA) is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in three starts against Kansas City (43-48), beginning with seven outstanding innings in a 9-0 road win April 29.

He failed to receive decisions in the next two, allowing two runs over 5 2-3 innings in a 4-3 victory June 18 and giving up four runs over five-plus frames in a 10-7 loss July 4.

Jimenez's walk total has increased from two to four to five in those starts, and he owns an AL-worst walks per nine innings ratio of 4.85.

The right-hander is limiting the Royals to a .131 average - the lowest among teams that have faced him this year. The only Kansas City hitters with more than one hit against him this season are Lorenzo Cain (3 for 8) and Mike Moustakas (2 for 8). The Royals have just three other hits off Jimenez.

Shields (4-6, 3.12) has not lost since May 27, going 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in his last eight outings. He limited the Yankees to one run over seven innings Tuesday in a 3-1 victory, finishing with five hitless frames.

The right-hander has no record with a 4.76 ERA in two 2013 starts against the Indians - both during the Royals' eight-game run with him on the mound.

Nick Swisher did not play in those games, once due to injury. He's faced Shields more than any Indians hitter, going 8 for 45 with three homers.

Cleveland (50-44) will head into the All-Star break in second place in the AL Central for the second straight year, but probably feels better about itself now. Last year, the Indians trailed the second-place White Sox by three games before manager Manny Acta was fired near the end of a 24-53 collapse thereafter.

Under new skipper Terry Francona, the Indians are 1 1/2 games behind Detroit as they seek a fourth straight win Sunday.

"What we've done in the first half makes the second half potentially really exciting," he told the Indians' official website. "We've played well enough where, let's go play. That's exciting. We need to play better in the second half, but we can."

Lonnie Chisenhall came through with his first career grand slam in Saturday's 5-3 victory. He's hitting .292 with three homers and 14 RBIs since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus on June 18 after being sent down May 15.

"When he's getting balls to hit he's not fouling them," Francona said. "Sometimes you get one pitch to hit in an at-bat. Now he's getting it and hitting it."

Kansas City has totaled eight runs with 32 strikeouts and a .213 average during a four-game slide. Alex Gordon is in a 1-for-17 slump, Salvador Perez a 2-for-23 rut and Billy Butler a 6-for-39 skid although he had two hits Saturday.

The Miami Marlins have an opportunity to head into the All-Star break riding their longest winning stretch in more than year.

Looking to win four in a row, the Marlins try to complete a home series sweep of the underachieving Washington Nationals on Sunday.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and Ed Lucas beat out a potential double play at first base in the 10th to give Miami (35-57) a 2-1 win over Washington on Saturday.

``That's a double play in April,' Miami manager Mike Redmond said. ``To win that thing on a fielder's choice, and a lot of good at_bats... it wasn't a thing of beauty, but I'll take it.'

The Marlins have followed a five-game skid with their fifth three-game win streak this season. A winner in 19 of 32, Miami last won four straight games June 27-July 1, 2012.

It's only other sweep of at least three games this season came against the New York Mets at home May 31-June 2.

Washington (47-47), meanwhile, is 1-5 on a seven-game trip and trying to avoid being swept on the road for the first time since Sept. 14-16 at Atlanta. The Nationals were swept at Miami last year.

Stanton has homered in consecutive games after hitting one in his previous 21 contests.

"I figured he wasn't going to throw a strike - which that wasn't,' Stanton said of the tying shot. "I just saw fastball and reacted to it.'

Miami's Henderson Alvarez (0-1, 5.73 ERA) will make his third straight start since he missed the first three months with shoulder inflammation. He allowed five runs and walked four in six innings of a 6-4 loss Tuesday in his second straight outing versus Atlanta.

"He came out in that first inning and he was lights-out," catcher Rob Brantly told the Marlins' official website. "He was competing and getting ahead in counts, making all his pitches, quality pitches. After that, I think we started nitpicking the zone too much. We started getting in hitters' counts.

"As long as we keep them on the defensive, I think we'll be all right."

Pitching for Toronto last year, the right-hander gave up four runs on three homers, including one to Bryce Harper, in seven innings of a 4-2 loss against Washington.

The reigning AL East champion Nationals have averaged 2.3 runs on the current trip to continue their disappointing season of mediocrity.

Harper went 0 for 3 and scored the lone run Saturday, but was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the eighth.

"You can't do that,' manager Davey Johnson said. "Take it out on the pitcher. You can't take the frustration out on the umpire.'

Harper will start Tuesday's All-Star game, but is 2 for 18 with six strikeouts in five games and hitting .196 (9 for 46) with one homer and six RBIs in July.

Washington's Taylor Jordan (0-2, 3.45) tries a third time to earn his first major league victory Sunday. The right-hander allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 4-2 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.
