          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB teams helped and hurt by the All-Star break
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The All-Star break is a double-edged sword for MLB clubs, giving struggling teams a chance to regroup and acting as a rather large speed bump for those on a roll.

Here are three teams who could be hurt by the break and three which could benefit the most from some time off:

          Hurt by the break

Tampa Bay Rays (50-40, +2.36 units)

Tampa Bay is finally gaining ground in the AL East, winning five straight and nine of its last 10 games heading into Tuesday. The Rays have benefited from some weak competition, facing the Astros, White Sox, and Twins in their final 14 games before the break. They hit the road for a 10-game divisional tour after the holiday, at Toronto, Boston and New York.

          Oakland Athletics (53-37, +13.67 units)

The A’s normally wait until well after the All-Star break to really get rolling. But this year, Oakland started hot and leads the AL West by half a game heading into Tuesday. It’s won seven of its last 10 games, knocking off the Cubs, Royals and Pirates and closes with a three-game home set vs. Boston before the break. A six-game road trip awaits following the All-Star Game.

Los Angeles Dodgers (43-45, -10.83 units)

The Dodgers have come back from the dead in recent weeks, thanks to the hot-hitting of rookie Yasiel Puig and the return of Hanley Ramirez. Los Angeles has won seven of its last nine and has climbed to second in the NL West. While the downtime does allow Matt Kemp more time to heal from a shoulder ailment it’s a huge momentum stopper, with a six-game eastern road trip on deck after the break.

          Helped by the break

San Francisco Giants (40-48, -13.99 units)

My how the mighty have fallen. The defending World Series champs are counting the days to the All-Star break after picking up just three wins in their last 17 games, sinking to the bottom of the NL West and the MLB money rankings. San Francisco closes out the first half of the sked on the road against the Padres. The break will allow the Giants to heal up and clear their heads before another strong second-half run.

          Pittsburgh Pirates (53-35, +23.02 units)

Bettors were waiting for the other shoe to drop when it came to the Bucs’ hot 2013. The Pirates have lost three in a row and are just 5-5 in their last 10 games heading into Tuesday, watching the Cardinals jump them in the NL Central standings. Pittsburgh opens the post-break slate with a 10-game road swing to Cincinnati, Washington and Miami.

Toronto Blue Jays (43-45, -1.47 units)

The Jays are looking forward to a fresh start after the break. The first chunk of 2013 was up and down and leaves them at the bottom of the AL East. However, this team saw how good it could be with an 11-game winning streak and the break should help rush some key bats and pitchers back into action for a post-ASG push. Toronto can gain ground with a 10-game home stand following the hiatus.

Great road record helps Pirates top money standings
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An interesting interleague series is underway as the Oakland A's travel east and face the Pittsburgh Pirates this week.

What makes this interesting is that these are the top two teams in the money statistics. The Pittsburgh Pirates are head and shoulders above the rest of the league at $2,198 won per $100 bettor on the season. The A's are next at $1,467 won per $100 bettor. The third ranked team is the Boston the Red Sox and they are a full $1,311 behind the Pirates at $991.

Oakland won the first two games of the series, edging Pittsburgh 2-1 in each outing. The A's are +120 underdogs in the finale, facing Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano (-130) Wednesday.

Just taking the National League into account, the Pirates are a whopping $1,571 ahead of the second-place St. Louis Cardinals. So how are the Bucs so far ahead of the pack in money stats?

The Pirates put together a nine-game winning streak in June where they were dogs in five of those outings, which certainly aided their money total.

The Pirates have posted the third-best road record in the bigs at 24-19. Of those 24 road wins, they won 20 times as road dogs. They've also knocked off some of the top pitchers during their successful road trips. Felix Hernandez, Jered Weaver, Homer Bailey, Mat Latos and Matt Harvey are just a few of the Bucs' victims en route to some particularly handsome payouts as road underdogs.

Pittsburgh stays in the Steel City for a three-game set against the New York Mets before the All-Star break.

                    • Preview: Blue Jays (44-46) at Indians (47-44)
                      Game: 3
                      Venue: Progressive Field
                      Date: July 11, 2013 12:05 PM EDT

A first-time All-Star last season, R.A. Dickey won't be heading to New York largely because of an inconsistent season that began with a loss to the Cleveland Indians.

The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander, though, has an opportunity to come up with a better performance against the Indians on Thursday going into the break.

Dickey (8-9, 4.77 ERA) went 12-1 before the break for the New York Mets in 2012 en route to a career-high 20 wins and the NL Cy Young Award. His first season in Toronto hasn't been nearly as charmed, causing him to miss a return to Citi Field for the Midsummer Classic.

Indicative of Dickey's up-and-down year, he gave up six runs over seven innings of a 6-0 loss to Minnesota on Saturday after winning both of his previous outings with a 1.13 ERA.

He was pitching well against the Twins until giving up a three-run homer in the seventh - the third three-run shot he's allowed in his last six starts.

"I gave up another three-run home run, which has kind of been my bane this year," said Dickey, who yielded only one such homer in 33 starts in 2012. "That's not ordinary for me."

Dickey allowed a two-run homer to Asdrubal Cabrera in a 4-1 defeat to Cleveland on April 2. He yielded four runs and four walks in six innings of that opening day start after going 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in his three prior starts against the Indians.

The Blue Jays (44-46) were on their way to being shut out for the third time in four games Wednesday before scoring five times in the final three innings of a 5-4 victory. Emilio Bonifacio and Munenori Kawasaki each singled in a pair of runs.

Kawasaki's hit ended an 0-for-18 slump, and Bonifacio's was only his fourth in the last 22 at_bats.

"Great ballgame, it really was," manager John Gibbons said. "The guys battle, like they always do."

The win was just the sixth in 16 games for Toronto, while Cleveland (47-44) suffered its sixth defeat in eight contests. The Indians have a 5.58 ERA during that stretch, with their bullpen posting a 6.35 mark.

"We battled back at the end. If I could have given up one run, we would have won the game," said reliever Joe Smith, who allowed Kawasaki's tiebreaking single in the ninth inning.

Danny Salazar will make his first major league start for Cleveland on Thursday. The 23-year-old right-hander had 49 strikeouts and 13 walks in his 42 2-3 innings at Triple-A Columbus, going 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA.

"This is just another step for him - and a big one - and hopefully he helps us get a win," manager Terry Francona told the team's official website.

Center fielder Michael Bourn, who had three hits Wednesday after a 2-for-20 slump, has five in his last 10 at_bats against Dickey.

After a modest rough stretch, Matt Moore has again been dominant for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Riding a 17 1-3-inning scoreless streak, the left-hander tries to win five straight starts for the second time this season when the host Rays look for an eighth consecutive victory and four-game sweep of the reeling Minnesota Twins on Thursday.

From June 4-14, Moore (12-3, 3.42 ERA) allowed 20 runs, 26 hits and walked 11 over 12 1-3 during a three-game losing streak. Since then, he's given up four runs while striking out 30 and overcoming 14 walks in 25 2-3 innings to go 4-0.

The same day he was passed over for a spot on the AL All-Star roster, Moore allowed five hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

"He certainly pitched like an All-Star,' manager Joe Maddon said.

Moore, who posted a 1.13 ERA while winning his first five starts, could still wind up in the Midsummer Classic with All-Stars Hisashi Iwakuma of Seattle, Detroit's Justin Verlander and Oakland's Bartolo Colon all scheduled to pitch Sunday. Texas' Yu Darvish was also placed on the disabled list and will miss Tuesday's contest.

"There's still an opportunity, possibly," Maddon said. "We'll see how it all shakes out."

While Moore would certainly welcome that first All-Star selection, his focus remains on helping the Rays (52-40) win eight in a row for the second straight season.

"We're playing great right now,' he said. "On my night, it's just keep the ball rolling.'

In his only start versus Minnesota last season, Moore allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 defeat at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay ran its winning streak over the Twins (37-51) to eight games Wednesday when it overcame an early two-run deficit to win 4-3 in 13 innings. Kelly Johnson hit a tying two-run homer in the sixth and Ben Zobrist had the winning RBI single to send the Rays to their 11th victory in 12 games.

"When you win a game like that, there's a residual energy," Maddon said.

Minnesota, meanwhile, has lost four in a row and 10 of 11.

The All-Star Zobrist is 6 for 40 in his last 10 games, and 3 for 12 in the series but with three RBIs.

Joe Mauer and Ryan Doumit each had three hits for the Twins, who have dropped four straight and 13 of 16 on the road.

Mauer is 5 for 9 the last two games and 2 for 2 versus Moore.

Teammate Justin Morneau, however, is 4 for 36 with three homers in July.

Scheduled Twins starter Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 5.63) was 0-3 with a 5.95 ERA during an eight-start span prior to landing on the DL with a back strain June 23. When he returned Saturday, the right-hander overcame a groin problem to allow three hits in six innings of a 6-0 victory at Toronto.

"He said he just made an adjustment in his windup and everything went good from there,' manager Ron Gardenhire said. "(The groin is) fine, he pitched through it with no problems and he'll be fine.'

Pelfrey last faced the Rays in 2009, when he gave up four runs in five innings for the New York Mets.

Scoring runs could be difficult for the Detroit Tigers in a matchup with Chris Sale. Still, they may have decent shot at winning given the Chicago White Sox's struggles when Sale pitches.

The Tigers try to build on another impressive offensive showing and hand the tough-luck All-Star a seventh straight defeat in Thursday's series finale at Comerica Park.

Detroit (50-40) is one of the highest-scoring teams in baseball and has averaged 6.9 runs while going 7-2 in its last nine. Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez each had three hits as the Tigers pounded out 15 in an 8-5 win Wednesday.

Fielder hit his 16th homer, Cabrera is 9 for 20 with three home runs in his last five games and Martinez is batting .429 during a 12-game hitting streak. However, the three are a combined 3 for 25 against Sale (5-8, 2.78 ERA).

The left-hander ranks fourth in the AL in ERA and fifth in strikeouts with 123, but he's last in the major leagues in run-support average at 2.46, leaving him with a subpar record.

The White Sox (35-53) have lost six of his last seven starts, with Sale going 0-6 with a 3.10 ERA. He has struck out 62 over 49 1-3 innings and limited opponents to a .215 average in that span, but has been backed by nine runs of support.

"You can't expect him to blank everybody,' White Sox manager Robin Ventura said after Sale yielded three runs in seven innings of a 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday. "He's pitching fine, competing and doing all the things you want him to do. It's just when you don't get any runs, it seems like it's wasted. We need to put some points on the board.'

Sale will be the first All-Star to head into the break with eight losses since Toronto's Ricky Romero in 2011. No pitcher has been selected to an All-Star game with more losses since Bert Blyleven was 8-9 for Cleveland in 1985.

Sale could be in danger of matching that dubious feat as he's posted a 6.00 ERA in losing all three of his starts against the Tigers.

Detroit turns to Anibal Sanchez (7-5, 2.70), who is coming off an encouraging outing in his first start off the disabled list.

After being sidelined since June 16 because of a strained shoulder, Sanchez gave up one run and three hits over five innings of a 9-4 win at Cleveland on Saturday. He walked one and was pulled after throwing 73 pitches.

"I am building my arm," the right-hander told the Tigers' official website. "I don't know how many (pitches) I will have next time, but it's going to be better."

A better performance certainly seems possible for Sanchez, who has never faced the White Sox. He is 5-1 with a 1.64 ERA at Comerica Park, and Sale has been backed with four total runs of support in his last six road starts.

Chicago, loser of 11 of 14, ranks last in the AL in runs with 330, though it's totaled 16 in the first two games of this series.

Gordon Beckham homered Wednesday and is batting .441 with his first two home runs of the season in nine games this month.

                          • Preview: Royals (43-45) at Yankees (49-42)
                            Game: 7
                            Venue: Yankee Stadium

Andy Pettitte has not lost to the Kansas City Royals in nearly 14 years. Ervin Santana hasn't been able to beat the New York Yankees as a starter in almost five.

The Yankees would certainly like both trends to continue Thursday as they go for a split of this four-game home series after breaking out of an offensive funk.

Pettitte (6-6, 4.37 ERA) has gone 10-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 14 starts against the Royals since an Aug. 18, 1999 loss. The most recent came May 11, when he threw seven innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts in a 3-2 road victory.

The left-hander has earned the win in three straight starts against Kansas City with a 2.14 ERA, and is 15-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 23 career matchups.

Pettitte ended a four-game stretch in which he was 0-3 by pitching 6 2-3 innings and giving up four runs in a 5-4 victory over Baltimore on Saturday.

"I've been frustrated,' he said. "Every decision you're making, you feel like it's not the right one.'

Pettitte can pass Hall of Famer Bob Gibson for sole possession of 44th place on the all-time wins list with his 252nd on Thursday. That would also move him within one victory of tying another Hall of Famer, Carl Hubbell.

Pettitte hadn't received much support prior to his last outing, getting 14 runs in a five-start stretch, but his team might be poised to score more for him in this game. New York (49-42) ended a three-game losing streak in which it scored one run each time with an 8-1 victory Wednesday, as Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer and Lyle Overbay added a grand slam.

"We needed that really bad,' Cano said.

Santana (5-5, 2.90) taking the ball also may bode well for Pettitte and New York. The right-hander, in his first year with Kansas City (43-45) after eight seasons with the Angels, has gone 0-6 with a 6.63 ERA in nine starts against Yankees since beating them Aug. 1, 2008.

The latest was May 12, with Santana giving up four runs in 6 1-3 innings of 4-2 loss, surrendering homers to Cano and Vernon Wells. Cano has six home runs and two doubles among his 13 hits off of Santana and is batting .325 in the matchup.

The slugger went 3 for 4 on Wednesday and is batting .438 during a five-game hitting streak.

Santana has gone four starts without a decision and hasn't lost in his last seven outings. However, he's posted a 4.26 ERA in his last three starts after compiling a 0.94 mark in the previous four.

Santana pitched seven innings and gave up three runs in a 4-3 win over Oakland on Saturday.

"Ervin was great, really threw the ball well," manager Ned Yost told the team's official website.

Wells went 2 for 2 on Wednesday and has gone 10 for 20 in seven games in July. He's 9 for 27 with three doubles in his career against Santana.

Wells may get a chance to continue his hot hitting in this game, as he pinch-hit for Travis Hafner after the designated hitter suffered a bruised left foot Wednesday. Leadoff man Brett Gardner also departed with a bruised right leg and both players are day to day.

"I feel like we stung a few balls but right at people, so we have nothing to show for it. We just have to bounce back (Thursday),' Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain said.

Billy Butler is 5 for 16 with two home runs and two doubles off Pettitte.

After watching David Ortiz become the career leader in hits by a designated hitter, the Seattle Mariners are surely looking forward to seeing him leave town.

Ortiz tries to stay hot as the Boston Red Sox conclude a four-game set against the Mariners on Thursday.

After going 4 for 5 with a homer, two doubles and three runs in an 11-8 victory Tuesday, Ortiz doubled in his first at-bat Wednesday to break Harold Baines' record of 1,688 hits as a DH. The nine-time All-Star added a two-run homer the next inning as Boston (56-37) cruised to an 11-4 win.

"Wonderful hitters and when I first came up watching those guys," Ortiz said of Baines and former Mariners DH Edgar Martinez. "Now for your name to get mentioned next to theirs, it's a wonderful thing."

Hitting .459 with five homers and nine RBIs in his last 10 road games, Ortiz has batted .408 with four homers and nine RBIs in his past 13 contests versus Seattle (40-51).

"I've seen too much of him over the years," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "He is about as professional a hitter as you can be. Still has the bat speed, still has the power, commands the strike zone as good as anybody in the game."

Faced with the task of slowing Ortiz down is Erasmo Ramirez, who is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to make his season debut. The 23-year-old right-hander takes the place of Jeremy Bonderman, who was designated for assignment earlier this week.

Ramirez went 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA in his last four minor league outings, but he compiled a 2.37 ERA in his final six major league starts last year. In his only appearance versus Boston, Ramirez retired the first eight batters he faced before leaving with an elbow injury last June 30.

Besides Ortiz, Ramirez will need to be cautious with Jacoby Ellsbury, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs in his first game back since missing two with a wrist injury. Ellsbury is batting .408 with 15 runs during an 18-game hitting streak, the longest active one in baseball.

The Red Sox give the ball to Ryan Dempster (5-8, 4.04 ERA), who has gone 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA in his last eight outings. The right-hander yielded three runs - two earned - in 6 1-3 innings and was in line for the win before Koji Uehara blew the save in a 9-7, 11-inning defeat to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

"That's your job as a starting pitcher to try to be as consistent as you can," Dempster, seeking his eighth quality start in nine tries, told MLB's official website. "I've got one more start before the break, and try to finish strong before the break."

Dempster has gone 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts against the Mariners, both of which came in Seattle. He allowed two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 3-2 win there Sept. 23 while with Texas.

Mariners shortstop Brendan Ryan, who had homered once in his previous 106 home games, led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run after coming in as a defensive replacement Wednesday. Ryan is 7 for 18 with two homers and a double versus Dempster.

                              • Preview: Rangers (53-38) at Orioles (50-42)
                                Game: 4
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                                Date: July 11, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Baltimore Orioles are hoping to salvage a four-game split with the visiting Texas Rangers on Thursday night. Doing so could prove easier against Ross Wolf than it would have versus Yu Darvish.

Darvish was slated to face Baltimore (50-42) for the first time since getting outpitched by Joe Saunders in last year's 5-1 wild-card loss, but he was scratched and placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a strained trapezius muscle in his throwing shoulder.

"At this stage, it's not something we're worried about," assistant general manager Thad Levine told MLB's official website. "If we sit him down for two weeks and miss one start, it's better for Darvish and he can hit the ground running in the second half. He is characterizing it as a fatigue type of deal more than anything."

Leading the majors with 157 strikeouts, Darvish is expected to be replaced by Wolf (1-1, 1.95 ERA). The right-hander has pitched out of the bullpen since beating Oakland 3-1 in his only career big league start May 22.

The 30-year-old Wolf, called up from Triple-A Round Rock earlier that day, allowed one run and three hits in five innings.

"I'm going to go out and do what I can do, throw strikes and get outs as quick as I can. I've been the long guy in the 'pen, so it's not that different," he said. "(The Orioles) have a good lineup. I just have to lock it in and give it all I got."

Baltimore had dropped five of six before winning 6-1 on Wednesday. Wei-Yin Chen returned from the DL to throw seven strong innings and Nolan Reimold went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer.

"Winning the ballgame is real huge," Chen said through an interpreter. "I'm healthy, and I'm back. I feel like I helped the team to win. Everything is for the Orioles."

Manny Machado had three more hits, bringing his total to 126 - second most in the majors behind Miguel Cabrera's 129. Machado is batting .403 with two homers, nine doubles and 10 RBIs in his last 15 home games.

The Orioles now turn to Miguel Gonzalez (6-3, 3.63), who has gone 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA in his last six starts. The right-hander allowed one run in six innings and was in line for the win Friday at Yankee Stadium before Jim Johnson blew the save in a 3-2 loss.

"Miguel was fortunate," manager Buck Showalter said of Gonzalez, who issued a career high-tying five walks. "But that's him. He's going to bend, but not break."

Gonzalez has won a career-high three straight home starts and has gone 7-0 with a 3.47 ERA in an 11-game stretch at Camden Yards dating to last year.

In his only appearance against Texas (53-38), Gonzalez surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings of a 5-1 road loss Aug. 20.

He'll need to be careful against Adrian Beltre, who is batting .468 with six homers and 12 RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak. The slugging third baseman has recorded at least one hit in 14 of his last 15 regular-season games against the Orioles, going 26 for 63 (.413) with nine homers, 22 RBIs and 18 runs.

Despite an 0-for-4 effort with runners in scoring position Wednesday, the Rangers are hitting .357 in those situations during an 8-2 stretch on the road.
