  • Preview: Nationals (47-44) at Phillies (45-47)
    Game: 4
    Venue: Citizens Bank Park
    Date: July 11, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

While Jordan Zimmermann remains unbeaten at home, the road hasn't proven as kind to him.

The ballpark hasn't made much difference for Kyle Kendrick, who has been hit hard in his last two starts.

Zimmermann takes the mound opposite Kendrick as the Washington Nationals try to salvage a four-game split against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.

Zimmermann (12-3, 2.57 ERA) is tied for the NL lead in wins, and the Nationals (47-44) have won his last seven starts and 15 of 18 overall. Each of those losses, though, have come on the road, where he's gone 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA - more than two runs higher than his home mark of 1.75.

Zimmermann has been especially bad in his last two starts in opposing stadiums, going 0-1 while allowing 13 runs in 11-plus innings.

The right-hander wasn't very sharp Saturday at home. He allowed three runs over 5 1-3 innings in a 5-4 win over San Diego but didn't get a decision.

"It's been going on for a little while, but I'll be fine," Zimmermann said of his lingering neck stiffness.

Zimmermann is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his last three starts against the Phillies (45-47), but he's 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA in three career outings in Philadelphia.

Kendrick (7-6, 3.90), meanwhile, gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings in a 6-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on June 30, then surrendered six runs and a career-high 12 hits in five innings Saturday in a 13-4 home defeat to Atlanta.

"He had the ball up. His fastball and his changeup were up," manager Charlie Manuel told MLB's official website. "It was the first time I saw him having trouble keeping the ball down."

Kendrick has dropped three straight starts once in his career, June 6-17, 2012.

The right-hander has posted mixed results versus Washington, going 4-6 with a 4.69 ERA over 19 starts. He has allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of those games while posting a 9.80 ERA in the others.

Kendrick yielded one run and two hits in 7 2-3 innings but didn't factor in the decision of a 6-2, 11-inning loss to the Nationals on June 19.

While Bryce Harper has gone 7 for 14 with a homer and three doubles against Kendrick, Jayson Werth is 2 for 17 and Adam LaRoche is 4 for his last 24 in their matchups.

The Nationals were limited to four runs in dropping the first two games of this set before hitting four homers in Wednesday's 5-1 victory. Anthony Rendon and Wilson Ramos hit back-to-back shots in the fifth inning before Ryan Zimmerman and Werth went back-to-back in the sixth.

"This park should make you more aggressive," said manager Davey Johnson, whose team entered Wednesday having dropped four of five and nine of 12 at Citizens Bank Park.

Filling in for injured first baseman Ryan Howard, Darin Ruf provided all of Philadelphia's offense with his first homer of the year. Ruf has hit safely in all five games since getting called up Saturday, going 5 for 13 with two RBIs and four runs.

Despite Wednesday's loss, the Phillies are 11-5 at home since June 2.

    • Preview: Reds (51-40) at Braves (52-39)
      Game: 1
      Venue: Turner Field
      Date: July 11, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

No matter what happens in their final series of the first half, the Atlanta Braves will head into the All-Star break atop the NL East.

That lead could have been bigger had they done a better job supporting Tim Hudson.

The right-hander tries to build on his first victory in two months Thursday night in the first of four against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Although Braves starters had a 4.21 ERA on a 3-3 trip that ended with Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Miami, that group's 3.52 ERA is a major reason why the team owns baseball's largest divisional lead.

Atlanta (52-39) has held at least a share of the top spot in the East since April 5.

Hudson (5-7, 4.03 ERA) has the worst ERA among Braves starters, but he's posted a 2.28 ERA in his last seven outings with opponents batting .207. He has a team-worst 3.42 run-support average while going 1-3 during that stretch, even after Atlanta set season highs for runs and hits (19) in Saturday's 13-4 victory at Philadelphia.

Hudson, working on six days' rest due to a sore neck, was 0-6 in his previous 10 starts.

"It makes my job a lot easier when we're able to put up some crooked runs," he told the Braves' official website after yielding one run and walking none in seven innings.

Hudson, 3-0 with a 2.68 ERA in eight home starts, gets his first look at the Reds (51-40) since their last game in Atlanta, a 6-2 Braves victory May 15, 2012.

Atlanta took two of three from the Reds from May 6-8.

The Reds will now try to hand the Braves a season high-tying third straight home defeat after ending their three-game skid with Wednesday's 6-2 victory at Milwaukee. Cincinnati scored four runs during its slide.

"It would have been a graveyard in here if we didn't pull this one out," starter Mike Leake said.

The Reds continue their trip with Mat Latos (8-2, 3.18) on the mound. The right-hander permitted four runs and a season high-tying four walks but struck out 11 over six innings in Saturday's 13-4 victory over Seattle.

"The offense picked me up," said Latos, who received four runs of support in his previous three starts. "Thirteen runs is always good, especially when I put us in a 2-0 hole."

Latos, 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts in Atlanta, should be especially careful with Chris Johnson, who's batting .409 with nine RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak. Johnson, 7 for 15 with a homer and three doubles off Latos, was hitless in five at_bats against the Reds in May.

Teammate Andrelton Simmons went 8 for 13 with two homers and four RBIs.

Chris Heisey, who was sidelined for that series with a hamstring injury, is questionable for Cincinnati after getting hit on the left arm by a pitch Tuesday and missing Wednesday's game. Heisey is 9 for 11 in five career games in Atlanta.

Shin-Soo Choo, who has hit safely in a team-best eight straight, will play his first game there. The center fielder hit two homers, including a walkoff shot, in a 5-4 victory May 7.

Brandon Phillips is 3 for 21 when facing Hudson, while fellow All-Star starter Joey Votto is 1 for 10.

      • Preview: Brewers (37-53) at Diamondbacks (47-44)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Chase Field
        Date: July 11, 2013 9:40 PM EDT

The Arizona Diamondbacks are rumored to be interested in trading for Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo.

In the meantime, the right-hander looks to remain undefeated against the Diamondbacks and help the visiting Brewers hand the NL West leaders a fourth straight defeat Thursday night.

For the first time in his seven-year career, Gallardo (7-8, 4.85 ERA) is the subject of some serious trade talk while Milwaukee (37-53) sports one of the majors' worst records.

Clinging to a 1 1/2-game division lead and looking to perhaps bolster a rotation that's minus injured starters Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy, Arizona (47-44) appears to be one of those teams vying for Gallardo's services.

"It's a little bit different. I wouldn't say that it's tough," Gallardo told the Brewers' official website of dealing with the rumors. "The only thing I can do is go out there and pitch.

"There's certain things that you really can't control. It's out of my hands."

What Gallardo can control is trying to improve on his 7-0 record and 1.55 ERA in 10 regular-season and playoff starts against the Diamondbacks. He's also 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA at Chase Field, but hopes for a better outing after giving up four runs and nine hits in six innings of an 8-7, 11-inning home loss to Arizona on April 7.

Gallardo has allowed 17 runs in 13 innings while losing two of three overall, but earned the win Saturday after he gave up four in six innings of a 7-6 victory over the New York Mets.

"I've been feeling good for three or four starts now, and that's a good start," he said. "Now you just have to get everything working together - mechanics, release point, rhythm."

Milwaukee was swept by the Diamondbacks in April, and now looks to avoid a third consecutive loss at Chase Field, where Arizona was just swept by the surging Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks blew a one-run lead in the ninth then lost 7-5 in 14 innings on Thursday.

"We have to figure out some things so guys can get some outs later in the game," manager Kirk Gibson said.

The Brewers failed to record a sweep of their own with Wednesday's 6-2 loss to Cincinnati. Neither Ryan Braun nor Norichika Aoki played as Milwaukee was held to two runs and four hits for the second straight contest.

Batting .405 this month, Aoki is expected back after missing two straight games with elbow tightness. He's batted .457 (16 for 35) with three RBIs in eight career games versus Arizona.

Braun also is likely to play following a day to rest after he went 1 for 3 on Tuesday in his return from missing a month with a thumb injury. He's also dealing with the distraction of possibly facing a suspension for allegedly failing to cooperate with the investigation of the Biogenesis case.

Braun is 2 for 5 with two homers against scheduled Arizona starter Wade Miley (5-7, 4.06), who has allowed one run over 13 2-3 innings in his last two starts.

The left-hander went 0-2 despite posting a 2.76 ERA over a five-start stretch before he yielded a home run and four other hits in eight innings of an 11-1 win over Colorado on Saturday.

Miley improved to 2-1 and dropped his ERA to 6.89 against the Brewers after he gave up a homer to Jean Segura in six innings of a 3-1 victory at Milwaukee on April 5.

Arizona All-Star Paul Goldschmidt is batting .414 with seven RBIs in seven games, and has hit .400 (12 for 30) with six doubles, three homers and nine RBIs in eight career games versus Milwaukee. He is 3 for 3 with a double against Gallardo.

        • Preview: Rockies (44-48) at Dodgers (45-45)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Dodger Stadium
          Date: July 11, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The Colorado Rockies are expected to have Dexter Fowler back from the disabled list in time for the series opener against one of the hottest teams in baseball. It's uncertain, though, if Troy Tulowitzki will get the chance to see the field that soon.

After getting Carlos Gonzalez back in the lineup their last time out, the Rockies are hoping that they're virtually at full strength when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers, winners in 15 of 18, on Thursday night.

Fowler hasn't played since June 25 because of an injured right hand, and Tulowitzki has been out since June 13 due to a broken rib. The two returned to the team Wednesday from rehab assignments at Triple-A Colorado Springs, but manager Walt Weiss wasn't ready to say if Tulowitzki would be ready for the series opener at Dodger Stadium.

The shortstop, one of the Rockies' two All-Star starters along with Gonzalez, had the NL's second-best average at .347 along with 16 homers and 51 RBIs before his injury. He's gone 6 for 14 in his last three games against the Dodgers.

"I'm expecting Dexter to be ready to go," Weiss said. "Sounds like his hand is doing fine. Tulo's going to go to L.A. It'll be more re-evaluating Tulo and going from there."

Gonzalez returned from a sprained finger Wednesday as the Rockies held on for their third win in 10 games, 5-4 over San Diego. Gonzalez went 1 for 5 while Charlie Blackmon had two hits and two RBIs, including a key triple in the eighth inning.

Colorado (44-48) will try to continue heading in the right direction with another strong showing against the struggling Chris Capuano (2-6, 5.19 ERA). The left-hander has lost his last four matchups with the Rockies with a 6.75 ERA, giving six runs over 4 1-3 innings in a 9-5 loss at Coors Field last Thursday.

That performance left Capuano at 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA in his last two starts.

The Rockies, though, will also have to face a surging Dodgers club that's 1 1/2 games behind Arizona for the NL West lead after a sweep of the Diamondbacks. Los Angeles (45-45) capped that series by rallying for a 7-5 victory in 14 innings Wednesday.

"Obviously, you want to come in and win a series, but to win three was big for us," manager Don Mattingly said.

Hanley Ramirez and A.J. Ellis provided solo homers in the final inning to finish off three-hit games. Ramirez is batting .464 with seven homers and 21 RBIs in his last 22 contests, and Ellis is 15 for 39 (.385) with 11 RBIs during a nine-game hit streak.

They will next try to add to Drew Pomeranz's woes. Pomeranz (0-2, 9.72) has not made it past the fifth inning in two starts since being recalled from the minors. He gave up five runs in four innings of an 11-1 loss to Arizona on Saturday, matching a career high with five walks.

The left-hander gave up six runs over four innings in his most recent matchup with Los Angeles, a 10-8 loss Aug. 29. Ramirez hit a two-run homer off him in that game.

The Rockies are hoping Tulowitzki will get the chance to thwart the Dodgers' attempt to move above .500 for the first time since April 15. He's 5 for 11 with two solo homers against Capuano.

          • Preview: Giants (40-50) at Padres (41-51)
            Game: 1
            Venue: PETCO Park
            Date: July 11, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Since the San Francisco Giants took two of three from San Diego three weeks ago, little has gone right for the reigning World Series champions.

Things have not been much better for the Padres.

The Giants look to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat when they visit the struggling Padres on Thursday night.

After winning two straight at home over San Diego (41-51) on June 18-19, San Francisco was three games over .500 and 1 1/2 behind first-place Arizona in the NL West. Since then, the Giants (40-50) have averaged 2.3 runs while losing 16 of 19 to fall into last place in the division.

"It seems like everything is going wrong," losing pitcher Matt Cain said after Wednesday's 7-2 home loss to the New York Mets dropped the Giants 10 games under .500 for the first time since 2008. "We're not pitching, we're not fielding and we're not getting hits.

"This is a pretty bad skid and we need to find a way out of it.'

Cain failed to make it out of the first inning and the Giants didn't score until the seventh Wednesday en route to being swept at home for the first time since July 27-29.

"It's not exaggerated. When you're going through a streak, it wears on you mentally as much as physically," manager Bruce Bochy told the Giants' official website. "It's been a daily issue. We're playing and there's a lot of faith we'll get out of this."

Bochy, however, needs some of his top players to produce.

Hunter Pence is 5 for 51 with a homer and three RBIs in his last 13 games and Pablo Sandoval 6 for 53 with no home runs and two RBIs in his last 14.

Sandoval, however, is 10 for 22 with four RBIs in his last five versus San Diego.

San Francisco starting pitchers have a 7.07 ERA while the team's gone 1-8 in July, but scheduled starter Madison Bumgarner (9-5, 3.05 ERA) earned the only victory. The left-hander allowed a two-run homer and two other hits while striking out nine in seven innings of a 4-2 win over the surging Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

The All-Star has a 2.25 ERA while winning five of six starts, and is 3-1 with a 2.08 ERA on the road during that stretch.

Bumgarner is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two home starts this season against the Padres, but 2-3 with a 3.93 ERA in six all-time at Petco Park.

San Francisco is 5-4 versus San Diego this season, but was swept in San Diego in April. One night after snapping a 10-game slide, the Padres lost 5-4 to Colorado on Wednesday. Their offense hasn't been much better than the Giants, averaging 2.6 runs in their last 12 contests.

"The guys come in every day ready to play,' manager Bud Black said. "I don't see any bad signs during our at_bats or giving at_bats away. I'm not seeing fundamental plays not being made in the field. There are going to be physical mistakes, but there haven't been mental mistakes over the past couple of weeks.'

Scheduled starter Jason Marquis (9-4, 3.79) has a 1.93 ERA while winning his last two starts against Giants, including April 28 when he gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 6-4 victory.

However, he's 0-2 with a 4.37 ERA in his last four overall. The right-hander gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 loss at Washington on Saturday.

San Diego's Carlos Quentin is batting .320 with two homers and six RBIs in his last six games. He's 2 for 5 versus Bumgarner.

            • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Mets beat the Giants 7-2, sweeping them by the bay for the first time since way back in 1994. Mets play much better away from home.

-- Ole Miss suspended star guard Marshall Henderson because he failed multiple drug tests. The phrase "thin ice" is being used here, as far as the kid staying on the team, or even in school.

-- Rangers put Yu Darvish on the DL (shoulder); bad news for them.

-- Bruins signed goalie Tuukka Rask to a $56M, eight-year extension.

-- Yoenis Cespedes' mother, Estela Milanes, was a lefty pitcher for the Cuban Olympic softball team.

-- Josh Beckett had an operation to have a rib removed that was putting pressure on a nerve. He is expected to be ready next spring.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Some good ideas and bad ideas..........

Good Idea: Super Bowls should be played in good weather cities, so the quality of the game isn’t compromised: LA, San Diego, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix, Tampa. You know, either indoors or in warm weather.

Bad Idea: The Super Bowl is in New Jersey this February. At night. Outdoors. There could be a blizzard, or sub-zero temps, or generally hideous weather. Oy.

Good idea: All war veterans should get free medical care for the rest of their lives; for all I know, they might get it now thru the VA, but if they don’t, they should.

Bad idea: I’ve said this before, but if you can go to war at age 18, you should be able to drink at age 18. Having the drinking age at 21 is too high.

Good idea: FOX Sports1 hired Bill Raftery as its analyst for Big East games; this is a tremendous move. Raftery is great.

Bad idea: FOX hired self-promoting screamer Gus Johnson as the play/play guy to be Raftery’s partner; lot of people like Johnson’s act, and it is an act. I’m not one of them.

Good idea: The retractable domed stadium they built in Miami is very nice (are you listening Minnesota? “Retractable dome”); it’s a great ballpark to go and the late afternoon thunderstorm don't rain any games out.

Bad idea: MLB letting Jeffrey Loria own a ballclub is so hideous, so unfair to the people of Miami whose taxes are paying for that great stadium. You want to trade Ricky Nolasco? That’s your business, but could you get something for him, other than a salary dump? Loria is a scumweasel of the highest order.

Good idea: ESPN’s Insider content on the Internet is excellent, well worth what they charge for it. Well worth the knowledge.

Bad idea: To get the Insider stuff, you have to get ESPN the Magazine delivered to your house; I tried to have them not give me the magazine, because its not very good, but they said the only way they wouldn’t send it to me is if I cancelled the whole account, and I want the Insider stuff.

Their magazine could be some much better if they weren’t obsessed with being “edgy”. Nitwits.

Good idea: I’m convinced that as soon as the concussion lawsuit stuff gets settled, the NFL will go to an 18-game schedule, with the Super Bowl on Sunday night of Presidents’ Day weekend (hopefully not in New Jersey anymore). I like the 18-game schedule; they do it in the CFL. The more football there is to watch, the better for me. It’s a way for them to increase their rights fees from the networks.

Bad idea: Until the concussion lawsuits are settled, we’re stuck with four preseason games a year, because owners charge regular season ticket prices as part of the season ticket plans. This larceny has been going on for years; before 1976, teams played six exhibition games a year. Not good.

Good idea: I’m off to Las Vegas for vacation today; NBA Summer League, mornings by the pool, this is tremendously tremendous. Next time you hear from me, I’ll be lounging in an air conditioned suite with a view of the Strip. Vacation in the desert; there is nothing wrong with this idea.
