  • Preview: Marlins (32-52) at Cardinals (50-34)
    Game: 1
    Venue: Busch Stadium
    Date: July 05, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

This weekend's three-game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins doesn't look like such a mismatch anymore.

The Marlins captured last month's series between these clubs and are winners of 10 of 13 entering Friday night's opener at Busch Stadium.

Although St. Louis (50-34) is contending in second place in the NL Central and Miami (32-52) is in last place in the East, the rebuilding Marlins are playing much better baseball now than the Cardinals - losers of eight of 11.

Miami rallied to take the final two games of a three-game set in Atlanta, including Thursday's 4-3 victory. The Marlins came back from three runs down, with pinch-hitter Donovan Solano singling in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning.

"It sure feels good, and I know the guys are fired up," manager Mike Redmond said. "You've got to earn wins in this place against this team, and we earned it."

St. Louis, meanwhile, blew a two-run lead in the ninth inning in Thursday's 6-5 loss to the Angels to cap a 3-5 trip. Edward Mujica suffered his first blown save after Adam Wainwright failed to retire the lone batter he faced in the ninth.

"He's been great all year," Wainwright said. "That's what happens when you let a leadoff guy on in the last inning. That's on me, right there."

The Marlins took two of three at home from the Cardinals from June 14-16, beating Jake Westbrook (4-3, 2.95 ERA) in the opener.

Westbrook was charged with five runs - three earned - over five innings in that 5-4 defeat, although he will be happy to be home for this rematch. He has allowed one unearned run and 13 hits over 22 innings at Busch Stadium this year, going 2-0 in three outings.

The right-hander was tagged for six runs over a season-low four innings Sunday in a 7-5 loss at Oakland.

He'll be opposed by a Missouri-born right-hander who grew up rooting for the Cardinals in Jacob Turner (2-0, 1.76), who has never pitched in St. Louis.

Turner scattered seven hits last Saturday in his first career complete game - a 7-1 victory over San Diego.

"I like to think it was just like any other game, but obviously, it was nice to pitch the whole game," Turner told the Marlins' official website. "At the same time, you have to go out there for your next start, throw strikes and let your defense do the work for you."

Turner gave up one run over five innings June 21, 2012, in his lone career appearance against the Cardinals in Detroit's 2-1, 10-inning victory.

Allen Craig is swinging a hot bat for St. Louis, going 13 for 29 with four homers and eight RBIs over his last eight games.

The Cardinals made a lineup change Thursday in removing Pete Kozma, hitless in 17 at_bats. Daniel Descalso went 3 for 4 in his place and will start at shortstop while Kozma works on his swing.

Kozma is 2 for 29 with 11 strikeouts over his last eight games.

"We really want Pete to understand that this is a move that can get him right and get him back to the player we know he can be," manager Mike Matheny told the Cardinals' official website.

    • Preview: Rockies (42-44) at Diamondbacks (44-41)
      Game: 1
      Venue: Chase Field
      Date: July 05, 2013 9:40 PM EDT

Jorge De La Rosa has pitched very well against the Arizona Diamondbacks this year, but the Colorado Rockies have never won when he's pitched at Chase Field.

De La Rosa will face the first-place Diamondbacks for the fourth time in 2013 on Friday night for the second-place Rockies in the opener of this three-game set.

Arizona (44-41) leads Colorado (42-44) by 2 1/2 games in the tightly packed NL West. These teams have split 10 meetings and won't meet again after this series until September.

De La Rosa (8-4, 3.09 ERA) presents a familiar foe to the Diamondbacks, going 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA in three matchups this year.

However, he allowed three runs over six innings in a 3-2 road loss April 25 to drop to 0-4 with a 3.72 ERA in six starts in Arizona. The Rockies have dropped all of those games, giving De La Rosa 10 runs of total support.

The Rockies have won nine of the left-hander's last 11 starts, and De La Rosa is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in the last three. He's given up three runs over his past 27 innings on the road.

Wil Nieves has enjoyed the most success against him this year among Diamondbacks hitters by going 4 for 6, but he may not start after catching all 15 innings in a 5-4 win over the Mets on Thursday. Paul Goldschmidt has a homer in eight 2013 at_bats against De La Rosa.

Arizona top prospect Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 5.40) will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Friday in his third stint with the club this year. He was needed since Trevor Cahill was placed on the disabled list Monday.

Manager Kirk Gibson believes the left-hander, who made the most recent of his three starts for Arizona on June 9, will fare better this time around in his first outing against the Rockies.

"He'll have a better idea of what he's up against," Gibson told the Diamondbacks' official website. "We're going to play a good Colorado team, and they're going to score a lot of runs, so he's going to have to make good pitches on them."

Arizona begins a 10-game homestand after salvaging a split of a four-game set in New York in a wild game in which it blew leads in the 13th and 14th innings.

"It's a grind, but if we want to win a world championship, we're going to have to endure a lot worse than that," Gibson said.

Goldschmidt is mired in a 5-for-26 slump, and he's 6 for 36 against Colorado this year. The Rockies will get their first look at Aaron Hill, who missed the previous matchups due to a broken hand. Hill went 5 for 15 in this week's series with the Mets.

The Diamondbacks catch a break since they won't face the injured Troy Tulowitzki, who is 11 for 28 with three homers and 10 RBIs against them.

Colorado's Michael Cuddyer is hitting .366 while hitting safely in 29 of 30 games. His franchise-record 27-game run was snapped Tuesday.

Carlos Gonzalez left Thursday's 9-5 win over the Dodgers in the sixth inning with a strained upper back. Gonzalez, who is 7 for 39 against Arizona, apparently hurt his back while striking out in the fifth.

"He said he's done it before. We're not too concerned," manager Walt Weiss said. "It was enough of an issue to get him out of there."

      • Preview: Red Sox (53-34) at Angels (41-44)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
        Date: July 05, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

If the Boston Red Sox are to build on the momentum generated from a stellar homestand and improve their recent road play, they'll need to cool off the surging Los Angeles Angels.

The Red Sox look for a fifth straight victory Friday night while trying to prevent C.J. Wilson from winning a career-high fifth consecutive start for the Angels.

Boston (53-34) hit .349 and outscored Colorado, Toronto and San Diego 51-30 during an 8-1 homestand. Jacoby Ellsbury had three of the Red Sox's 18 hits and Dustin Pedroia delivered a two-run double in Thursday's 8-2 victory over the Padres.

The Red Sox have hit .319 and averaged 6.0 runs while winning 18 of 23 at Fenway Park, but batted .247 and scored 3.8 while losing seven of 10 on the road.

Boston manager John Farrell hopes his club can turn things around this week at Los Angeles, Seattle and Oakland before the All-Star break.

"I think it's important to have that momentum going into the break," he told the Red Sox's official website. "You never want to have a stretch where you start to maybe slide back from the confidence that's been built or the wins that we've been able to amass.

"So we're going to be challenged not only in terms of the teams we're playing. Obviously the Angels are playing better now than when they were in town here last."

Los Angeles (41-44) lost two of three at Fenway last month, but has won eight of nine heading into this three-game set.

"It's all about momentum," slugger Josh Hamilton said after the Angels scored three in the ninth to rally for a 6-5 win over St. Louis on Thursday. "We kind of feed off each other, especially during this little but of a stretch we've had."

The Angels swept a three-game home set from Boston last season after the Red Sox won the previous seven at Anaheim.

Pedroia is batting .486 with eight RBIs in his last 10 games overall, and .378 in his last nine versus Los Angeles.

He's 8 for 17 with a homer and three doubles against Wilson (8-5, 3.63 ERA), who has posted a 2.42 ERA while winning four in a row. The left-hander allowed an unearned run, three hits and struck out 10 during Sunday's 3-1 victory at Houston.

Wilson has yielded two runs and seven hits over 14 innings to win two straight at home. However, he's 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox after he went 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA in his first five.

In his most recent loss, Wilson allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings of a 7-2 defeat at Boston on June 8.

Mike Trout, who had a two-run single Thursday for Los Angeles, is batting .415 with a homer and six RBIs in nine games versus Boston.

Hamilton went 2 for 14 at Fenway last month but is 12 for 30 (.400) with six RBIs in nine games to raise his average from .207 to .226. His lone home run during that stretch was a tying two-run shot in the ninth Thursday.

He's 4 for 9 with two doubles and a triple against scheduled Red Sox starter Felix Doubront (4-3, 4.22), who allowed three runs in six innings of a 9-5 loss to the Angels last month.

That's the only decision the left-hander has earned while posting a 3.00 ERA in his last five starts. He gave up two runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday.

        • Preview: Dodgers (40-44) at Giants (39-45)
          Game: 1
          Venue: AT&T Park
          Date: July 05, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

Just when the Los Angeles Dodgers thought they were going to get a weekend in San Francisco without seeing Matt Cain, the weather intervened.

Instead, he'll start Friday's series opener for the Giants against the visiting Dodgers, whom Cain has dominated in recent years. But Cain also hasn't seen a lineup as potent as the one Los Angeles has fielded of late - one that could get deeper with the potential return of Carl Crawford.

Cain (5-4, 4.29 ERA) was slated to start Thursday at Cincinnati, but the game was postponed due to rain, moving him back a day.

He's 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA over his last 11 starts against Los Angeles, allowing just 57 hits and 12 walks in 74 2-3 innings dating back to Aug. 1, 2010. Nine of those outings were quality starts, and Cain held the Dodgers to one run or fewer six times.

The right-hander is coming off arguably his finest start of the year, though the slumping San Francisco offense - which has scored 26 runs while losing 11 of 13 - couldn't turn it into a victory. Cain did not get a decision as he gave up one run and three hits - two in the first inning - and walked one over eight frames of a 2-1 loss to Colorado on Saturday.

These teams split Cain's two starts versus the Dodgers earlier this season as he held them to one run in a combined 13 1-3 innings. But Los Angeles' offense has evolved into an entirely different beast.

The second time the Dodgers (40-44) saw Cain, it was their 30th game, through which they were averaging 3.5 runs. They've won 10 of their last 12 while scoring 5.2 per game.

While they're coming off a 9-5 loss at Colorado on Thursday, the team's sixth 11-plus hit game in nine contests was still encouraging - as is Crawford's possible return.

Crawford, who was hitting .301 with 32 runs in 51 games before succumbing to a strained hamstring June 1, has completed his rehab assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. He will be with the Dodgers on Friday, according to their official website, though they haven't confirmed that they will activate the four-time All-Star from the disabled list.

His return could create almost as many headaches for manager Don Mattingly as it seemingly will for opposing pitchers trying to navigate the order. Mattingly will have to juggle an outfield that includes Crawford, rookie sensation Yaisel Puig, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.

Puig went 1 for 5 on Thursday to extend his hitting streak to eight games and is still batting .430 with 19 RBIs since making his major league debut June 3.

Kemp is only hitting .254 but homered for the second straight game and has six RBIs over his last four. Ethier, batting .258 on the season, is hitting .303 over his last nine and has five hits in his last 13 at_bats.

"It will be a little sticky, honestly," Mattingly told the team's official website. "Only three spots and four guys."

As for Cain, he'll also have to deal with Adrian Gonzalez, who has homered in three straight games, as well as Hanley Ramirez, who is batting .483 with 16 RBIs during a 15-game hitting streak.

Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-3, 2.83) will try to extend the Giants' offensive woes. The South Korean left-hander has already seen San Francisco (39-45) three times in his inaugural big league season, but went 0-2 despite a 2.84 ERA. He's posted a quality start in eight of his last nine outings while going 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA.

No batters have faced Cain more than Ethier and Gonzalez, who are 28 for 63 (.444) and 20 for 63 (.317) off him, respectively. Kemp is just 11 for 51 against Cain with 15 strikeouts.

Strategies for betting MLB team totals
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baseball is front and center in the betting world for the next couple months, so it's a good time to review MLB betting strategies.

Here are a few MLB team totals betting tips from an article recently published by Pinnacle Sports:

                        1) Gauging the juice

There is generally not enough action for books to deal these lines as sharp as they would a total or a runline. The key is to make sure you’re getting a good number and take solace in the fact you’re giving these lines more attention than the book is.

                        2) Common mistakes in calculating team totals

Myth: The two team totals should add up to the total for the game.

                        The article reads:

“If both teams will score 5 or more runs exactly half the time, meaning both teams have a fair Team Total of 4.5, you could safely bet the game to go over 9.5 at even money even though the Team Totals only add up to 9. That’s the way runs are distributed. It’s possible to score 24 runs in a game, but it’s impossible to score less than 0.”

                        3) Over or Under while playing team totals?

If the two team totals add up to a half run less than the game total, it’s a good idea to bet the under as long as the combined juice is small.

                        The article reads:

“Squares often bet with an unfounded optimism on what they’d like to see happen i.e. plenty of runs, and not what is most probable.”

                        4) Soft Lines

If a bettor wagers the mathematically incorrect side of a team total, especially if this happens twice, chances are this will move the line and cause it to present value. Sometimes, you may be lucky enough to find a line that has gone in the opposite direction of the main betting lines.

The New York Yankees have been on a roll since they last faced the Baltimore Orioles' Chris Tillman. They'll try for a season-high sixth straight win Saturday when they face the visiting Orioles, who have won eight straight outings by Tillman.

New York (47-39) fell four games behind second-place Baltimore (48-39) in the AL East after getting swept in three games at Camden Yards last weekend. The Yankees have bounced back by matching their longest win streak of the year to move within one-half game of the Orioles.

Baltimore's sweep was capped by a 4-2 victory Sunday in which Tillman (10-2, 3.68 ERA) gave up two runs over six innings to win his sixth start in a row. He's 7-0 with a 3.86 ERA in his past eight outings.

The right-hander has gone 6-0 with a 2.76 ERA in seven road starts, but he has a poor history in the Bronx, going 2-2 with a 9.95 ERA that's his worst mark in any ballpark in which he's pitched more than once.

Robinson Cano homered off Tillman last weekend and is 10 for 19 against him overall.

Cano is hitless in seven at_bats since a torrid six-game stretch in which he went 14 for 24 with four homers and 10 RBIs. He was intentionally walked twice in a 3-2 victory Friday.

"He's one of the best players in the game, no disrespect to anybody hitting behind him," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

The Yankees ended a five-game losing streak to the Orioles by rallying Friday to open this three-game set. They scored twice in the ninth off closer Jim Johnson, with Vernon Wells singling in the winning run past a drawn-in infield.

"It's good," Wells said. "Momentum's on our side. This is a fun one. We needed one of these."

Baltimore also lost 3-2 on Thursday in the bottom of the ninth when it surrendered a tiebreaking homer to Chicago's Adam Dunn.

New York is batting .237 against Baltimore, scoring more than three runs twice in 10 meetings.

The Orioles, though, have struck out at least 10 times in three straight games for the first time. They struck out 11 times Friday against Ivan Nova, who pitched a three-hitter.

"It's easy to say you're running into some good pitching, but you do every night in the big leagues," Showalter said. "We've got lot of guys capable of swinging it better and giving us some margin for error."

Baltimore will get its first look at Andy Pettitte (5-6, 4.40) since beating him in Game 2 of the division series last year. Pettitte gave up three runs over seven innings of that 3-2 defeat Oct. 8.

The left-hander, however, has gone 7-0 with a 2.87 ERA in his last 10 regular-season outings against the Orioles. He has 27 regular-season wins over them, second all-time behind Whitey Ford's 30 since the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954.

Major league home run leader Chris Davis is 4 for 11 against Pettitte, including postseason. Davis has hit .353 with five homers and nine RBIs in the season series to help Baltimore take six of 10.

The Toronto Blue Jays ended their losing streak Friday while extending the Minnesota Twins' slide.

Considering Toronto will start R.A. Dickey - who seems to have discovered a groove recently - the Twins' woes could very well continue Saturday at Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jays (42-44) ended their three-game slide with a 4-0 win over the Twins (36-47), who lost their sixth straight. Toronto's starters had struggled during the club's previous three games, combining to allow 19 runs and 26 hits in only 11 2-3 innings.

But Mark Buehrle gave them seven strong innings Friday, a trend the Blue Jays hope continues Saturday with Dickey (8-8, 4.59 ERA). He's won three of his last four starts with the last two being particularly impressive. After a two-hit shutout of Tampa Bay on June 26, he followed that with seven innings of two-run ball against Detroit in an 8-3 win Monday.

"Just another great outing," manager John Gibbons said. "Second one in a row. I see more bite on his knuckleball than we've seen in the past a little bit."

The 38-year-old pitched through some back and neck issues earlier this year, but is healthier now, and it seems to be showing with better velocity. Dickey said he hit season highs on the radar gun with both his fastball and knuckleball versus the Tigers.

He also walked a total of two batters in his last two starts after entering the first with a walk rate of 2.67 per nine innings.

"It's been kind of a tough go getting it back," Dickey said of his velocity. "You can get away with a lot more mistakes when the velocity's up there."

Jose Bautista and Jose Reyes continued hot stretches Friday, each going 3 for 4 and driving in two runs. Bautista hit his 20th homer and is 13 for 25 with four home runs and seven RBIs over his last seven games. Reyes was hitless in his first two games after returning from a sprained ankle June 26, but has since gone 13 for 36 with eight runs during an eight-game hitting streak.

Meanwhile, Minnesota's pitching staff continues to struggle, posting a 6.79 ERA during the six-game skid. Mike Pelfrey (3-6, 6.11) will try to give the Twins a lift Saturday as he makes his first start since June 18. Pelfrey, who was out with a strained back, went 0-3 over his last eight starts, throwing more than six innings only twice. He gave up a season-high 10 hits and four runs over six innings his last time out, a 7-5 win over the White Sox.

The Twins are also failing to come through with runners in scoring position, going 6 for 38 (.158) over the last five contests compared to a .253 mark on the season.

Canada native Justin Morneau, who homered twice in Minnesota's loss to the Yankees on Thursday, was 0 for 4 Friday. He's batting .198 in 24 career games in Toronto, including a current 1-for-14 slump. The slugger is also 0 for 4 off Dickey.

Dickey hasn't faced the Twins since 2008 when he made three relief appearances and one start.

The Twins have lost 17 of 23 to Toronto, including eight of nine at Rogers Centre.
