  • Preview: Rockies (43-47) at Padres (40-50)
    Game: 2
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: July 09, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Even a home matchup with the banged-up Colorado Rockies didn't allow the San Diego Padres to end their lengthy losing streak.

That slide could very well continue Tuesday night as San Diego faces a pitcher that has won five straight starts and hasn't lost in more than two months, as Colorado will send Jhoulys Chacin to the mound.

Already missing Troy Tulowitzki and Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez was also unavailable Monday after leaving Sunday's 6-1 loss at Arizona with a sprained middle finger. It's not clear when the NL home run leader will return.

"I don't feel good enough to play, but I'm not waiting to feel 100 percent," Gonzalez told the team's official website. "I want to feel good enough to go out and play for my team."

His team didn't need him in the series opener, though, winning 4-2 as Wilin Rosario went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Michael Cuddyer also was 2 for 5.

The Padres' losing streak hit 10, the first time that's happened since a 10-game skid Aug. 26-Sept. 5, 2010. San Diego (40-50), which dropped a team-worst 13 straight in 1994, has scored 25 runs during the slide.

Chacin (8-3, 3.74 ERA) has posted a 2.10 ERA in his past five outings, though he'd surely like to improve on a mediocre performance his last time out. He matched a season high by giving up nine hits and allowed four runs over 5 2-3 innings of a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.

The right-hander has gone nine starts since his last defeat May 16. He had posted a 1.26 ERA in his previous four games and hadn't allowed a run in 15 innings of the last two.

"Wasn't my better game," Chacin said after beating Los Angeles. "But the team picked me up, scored runs for me."

Former Colorado left-hander Eric Stults (6-7, 3.70) gets the nod for San Diego, having defeated the Rockies (43-47) at Coors Field on June 8. He held them to two runs - one earned - over seven innings of a 4-2 victory.

Stults, though, has given up 10 runs in eight innings over his last two starts - both on the road - while suffering his first back-to-back losses of the season. He had gone 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA in his previous six outings.

Perhaps returning to San Diego will help Stults, as he's 3-0 with a 1.41 ERA in his last five home starts.

Chacin won his first two starts against the Padres this year, giving up three runs in 11 2-3 innings, then didn't record a decision after allowing five runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 loss June 6. He's 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA in seven career starts versus San Diego.

    • Preview: Mets (38-48) at Giants (40-48)
      Game: 2
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: July 09, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

While he's pitched well lately, Dillon Gee's only start against the San Francisco Giants was hardly one to remember.

The New York Mets right-hander will seek a better performance Tuesday night while trying to add to the Giants' recent woes.

Gee (6-7, 4.45 ERA) is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in his last seven starts and has totaled 47 strikeouts and nine walks in 47 1-3 innings. He fanned seven and gave up two runs over seven innings Thursday against Arizona, but the Mets lost 5-4 in 15 innings.

Gee wasn't nearly as effective against San Francisco on April 23, 2012, allowing seven runs and a career-high 12 hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 7-2 home loss. The Giants (40-48), though, don't appear poised to duplicate that effort.

They enter this game having batted .197 during a 2-12 stretch and fell 4-3 in 16 innings in Monday's series opener.

The Mets (38-48) ended their third game of 13 or more innings this month - and fifth this season - after Brandon Crawford's two-out error scored Eric Young.

``I've never heard of anything like this. It's unbelievable,' manager Terry Collins said of his team's propensity for extra innings. ``At least we're used to it.'

Buster Posey had a career-high five hits for San Francisco, but Brandon Belt, hitting .136 in his last five games, went 0 for 8 with five strikeouts. Pablo Sandoval is 4 for 47 (.085) in his last 12 contests, and Hunter Pence is 3 for 42 (.071) in his past 11.

``There's frustration,' Pence said. ``We want to stay as positive as we can right now. We've got to get it done. We've got to keep pushing to find a way to turn it around.'

Barry Zito (4-6, 4.44) will try to give his team a much-needed boost by snapping a three-game losing streak. The left-hander has given up two runs or fewer in three of his last four starts but only pitched four-plus innings in his latest outing, a 3-2 loss in Cincinnati on Wednesday.

"I put (the team) in a tough situation by only going four innings. My pitch count was high. I have to start getting more action in three pitches. I've got too deep in counts," said Zito, who threw 88 pitches.

Zito allowed one run in that game but was tagged for seven in 4 1-3 frames in his most recent start against the Mets on Aug. 2, a 9-1 loss in San Francisco. He was 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA in his previous seven matchups.

Pitching at home, though, has proved beneficial this season for Zito, who is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 10 starts there. He's 0-5 with a 9.38 ERA on the road.

Gee is 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA in his last four road starts after going 1-3 with a 9.97 ERA in his first five this year. The Mets have also won their past three games in San Francisco.

They haven't won four in a row in the series since an eight-game run June 3-May 16, 2009. New York is also seeking its first three-game win streak since claiming a season-best five in a row May 26-30.

      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Chris Kaman signed with the Lakers; he might not be as good as Dwight Howard, but he is a career 74% foul shooter and is a good teammate.

-- Jermaine Marshall, who scored 15.3 ppg for Penn State LY, will play his senior season for Arizona State next year, and will ease the loss of Evan Gordon, who transferred to Indiana.

-- Kelly Olynyk has 39 points in his first two summer games for Boston; Celtics were +23 with him on the floor in Monday's game.

-- A's won 2-1 in Pittsburgh; non-All-Star Grant Balfour got his 41th save in a row; non-All-Star Josh Donaldson scored a run, knocked one in.

-- Siena's John Lannan shut out his former teammates for eight innings as the Phillies beat Washington, 3-2.

-- Rasheed Wallace is going to be an assistant coach with the Pistons; what is the over/under on technical fouls for him next year?

        *****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

        13) Modern baseball: the season is now divided into three parts; from Opening Day until the All-Star break, teams play to determine who the contenders are; with the extra Wild Card now, fewer teams fall out of the race quickly, though in reality, by Memorial Day several teams are cooked.

Then there is July, where buyers shop potentially productive/expensive players and contenders try to fortify their roster with an extra pitcher/hitter, sacrificing a prospect or two in the attempt to win this year.

The stretch run, from August 1 on, when the sellers go into a shell and try to placate their fans by telling them how great the new prospects are, while contenders race to the finish line and the gap between the haves and have-nots generally widens, at least in the short term.

        12) As an A’s fan, I’ve been on both sides of this fence; rooting for a team that sheds salary in July, a la the Marlins with Ricky Nolasco this weekend, is incredibly deflating, both for fans/players alike. Quitting with 8-10 weeks in the season sucks, though in big picture, it may be the best thing for a franchise to do.

When a team buys a player to help, even if the player isn’t that good, it sends the signal to the team that the front office has its back and is trying; this is often be very uplifting, and the team will play better/harder.

Unfortunately, that’s what July has become, the month you find out how badly your front office wants to win.

        11) Carlos Gomez brought a Joey Votto blast back in from over the fence, saving Milwaukee's 4-3 win over the Reds. Terrific catch.

        10) Zack Greinke blanked Arizona for seven innings on two hits, as the Dodgers won 6-1 in Phoenix, and have now won 13 of their last 16 games.

        9) Tough duty for the Red Sox, drawing Jered Weaver/Felix Hernandez on consecutive nights; Boston lost 11-4 in Seattle, their third loss in row.

        8) Very difficult to explain to my 87-year old dad why DirecTV goes out during a Matt Harvey start; he's trading the occasional outage to see every NFL game on the Sunday Ticket in the fall. Thunderstorms happen, but my dad loves the Mets and wants to watch Harvey pitch.

Cable is more dependable than DirecTV, but the NFL is the NFL.

        7) World University Games play by FIBA rules, which include a 24-second clock and an 8-second half court rule, much like the NBA, only games are 10-minute quarters, not 12-minute.

Its easy to visualize college basketball going to the shorter clock someday; I’m thinking it leads to more rushed shots at the end of shot clocks, but maybe it’ll lead to a faster paced game, too.

        6) Jason Kidd played over 2,000 minutes LY and didn’t get one technical foul; in his first game coaching the Nets’ summer league team, he got one for leaving the coaches’ box.

Kidd is starting from square one in learning how to coach a game; you rarely see an NBA head coach run his team’s summer league games.

        5) Ryan Palmer finished T62 at Greenbrier, earned $13,608, so his caddy Sean Payton can go back to his day job, coaching the Saints. Palmer wins out, since I’m guessing sideline passes to some Saints’ games will be coming his way.

        4) Paul Pierce finished 147th out of 386 entrants in an Omaha tournament at the World Series of Poker; at one point, Pierce was in the top 20 in chips. Bet David Stern just loves seeing NBA players gambling in Las Vegas.

        3) If you had under-8 in Braves-Marlins, not good, as Atlanta scored six times in the 14th inning to beat Miami 7-1. Seems like they have been lot of bad beats on totals in extra inning games this season.

        2) I say this at this time every year, but set-up guys do not belong in the All-Star Game. Your six best pitchers are your five starters and your closer; why should the 7th-best pitcher on a staff become an All-Star?

        1) ESPN is showing A’s-Pirates Wednesday night. Nationally. Guys who normally run the network must be on vacation this week.

        • See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

Spot bets are a classic handicapping practice that have proven profitable no matter what sport you’re betting. Whether it’s a team looking past this week’s opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots.

          Lookahead spot

The MLB All-Star break is just around the corner. The brief hiatus can be a speed bump for streaking teams and a moment of mercy for struggling ones. The Detroit Tigers have used the Mid-Summer Classic as a kickoff to the “real season”, going a collective 90-61 following the All-Star break the past two seasons.

Detroit is set up for a double lookahead this week. Not only are the Tigers counting down to the post-ASG schedule but take on the lowly Chicago White Sox for three games, starting Tuesday, before a showdown with the Texas Rangers to end the first half of the schedule. The White Sox are small potatoes compared to the Rangers, who will likely be battling Detroit for playoff positioning and possibly a wild card spot come the fall.

          Letdown spot

The two conference leaders in the WNBA do battle when the Minnesota Lynx host the Atlanta Dream Tuesday night. Oddsmakers have set the Lynx (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) as 6.5-point favorites for that high-profile matchup. A win over the 10-1 Dream would crown Minnesota as the team to beat in 2013.

The Lynx are back in action following that important game Thursday, visiting the stumbling Indiana Fever. The two teams met in last year’s WNBA Finals, but Indiana has fallen from grace with a 4-7 SU and ATS start to the season. Minnesota could get caught in a big letdown spot, especially with the Fever showing some of their championship swagger in recent games.

          Schedule spot

The Miami Dolphins have one of the weirdest schedules for the 2013 NFL season. Miami opens with five non-divisional games and closes against three straight AFC East foes. Not only that, the Dolphins find themselves playing four games in just over three weeks in November.

Miami is at New England for a grinder in Week 8 (+7) then hosts the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football in Week 9 (-1). The Dolphins come off that short week with another primetime matchup at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football in Week 10 (+1.5) before finishing this tough four-game, 22-day stretch with a home date versus the San Diego Chargers in Week 11 (-3).

Winning MLB pitchers that are horrible bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are four pitchers that have won more games than they’ve lost, but have been killing bettors to this point in the season:

                    Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

The Tigers are 10-8 in Verlander’s starts to date but a $100 bettor would be down $348 if they had wagered on each of the fireballer’s outings. Sharp bettors are instead fading the Tigers when the 2011 AL MVP takes the hill and betting the over to a tune of 11-6-1.

                    Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers

The Rangers are 10-8 when Darvish gets the ball and $100 bettors are in the red $499 on the righty’s 18 starts. The Japanese export really burned bettors in his most recent start against the Houston Astros when Texas fell as a hearty -320 favorite.

                    Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers

Kershaw boasts a league-best 1.89 ERA but that isn’t impressing bettors. The Dodgers are 11-8 in the lefty’s outings and that's resulted in a $291 loss for $100 bettors in each of his starts. But there may be hope in the second half of the season for Kershaw bettors. L.A. has wins in 12 of its last 15 games and won each of his last three starts.

                    Matt Harvey, New York Mets

The Mets are used to their role as underdogs on a nightly basis, but they’re almost always favorites when Harvey toes the rubber. The righty has only been a dog twice in his 18 starts and has put $100 bettors $320 in the hole. Surprisingly, New York has a 9-7-1 over/under record in Harvey’s starts.

Three bad MLB teams that are good bets lately
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Seattle Mariners, New York Mets and Chicago Cubs have been fade material all season, but all three clubs have been a good bet lately.

                    Let's take a closer look:

                    Seattle Mariners

The Mariners couldn't have asked for a better road trip, as they took back-to-back series' and six of eight games from the Rangers and Reds. Seattle won all six of those games as an underdog and returns home for a four-game set with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

                    New York Mets

New York has quietly posted a 12-8 record since June 18th, with nine of those victories coming in an underdog role. The Mets head to San Francisco to take on the struggling Giants for a three-game set beginning Monday. New York has also been a great over play recently, going 7-1 over/under over its past eight contests.

                    Chicago Cubs

At 7-4 over their last 11 games, the Cubbies are finally giving their faithful something to cheer about. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, Chicago’s potential players on the move should continue to step up and showcase their talents for the next few weeks.

Phillies, best 'over' bet in MLB, lose Howard for 6-8 weeks
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Philadelphia Phillies have played over the total in 13 of their last 16 games heading into Tuesday night's action at home against the Washington Nationals.

That streak has helped propel Philly to become the best 'over' bet in the majors with a 50-39-1 over/under record. Any $100 bettor would be up $344.51 if they had bet the over in each of the club's past six games, during which the over went 5-1.

The Phillies have averaged 5.1 runs per game over their past 16 contests, nearly 1.5 runs more than their season mark. But Philadelphia’s offense was dealt a huge blow Monday when it was determined that slugger Ryan Howard requires surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss six to eight weeks.

Howard was hitting .266 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs prior to the injury.

The Phillies took Game 1 of a four-game set with the Nationals, 3-2.

Given his recent success against the Miami Marlins, it's not surprising that Justin Upton has snapped out of a brief slump in a big way this week.

Upton will try to keep hitting and left-hander Paul Maholm will seek to add to his recent dominance against the Marlins when the Atlanta Braves go for a team-record seventh consecutive win in Miami on Wednesday.

Upton headed to Marlins Park having gone 3 for 23 (.130) in his previous five games but he has four doubles, a home run and five RBIs in the first two in this series. He went 3 for 5 with a homer, two RBIs and scored three times in a 6-4 win Tuesday.

"(Justin's) starting to swing it like he did early in the season," manager Fredi Gonzalez said of his outfielder, who had 12 homers in his first 23 games.

Upton is batting .400 with five homers, nine doubles, two triples and 21 RBIs in his last 22 games against the Marlins. He'll try to add to those numbers while helping Maholm (9-7, 3.81 ERA) continue his success versus Miami (32-57).

The left-hander is 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA in his last four starts against the Marlins, and has kept them scoreless for 13 2-3 innings. He yielded one hit and three walks over seven frames in his only matchup this season, a 2-0 victory April 8.

Maholm had a two-start win streak snapped Friday as he gave up five runs and nine hits - including a season-high two homers - over six innings in a 5-4 defeat in Philadelphia. He allowed four of those runs in the first three innings.

"I made some mistakes and they hit them hard," Maholm told the team's website. "There were a few plays we could have taken care of, but it's one of those days where you battle and see how long you can go."

Maholm will next face a Marlins team that's batted .185 during a five-game skid after hitting .257 during a 10-3 stretch. Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been slumping even longer, going 5 for 35 (.143) with 13 strikeouts and one extra-base hit in his last 10 games.

Jacob Turner (2-1, 2.30) looks to rebound from his first loss of the season. In his return to his home state, the right-hander allowed four runs over six innings Friday in a 4-1 defeat in St. Louis after posting a 1.76 ERA in his first six starts.

"I wish I would have pitched a little better and pitched a little deeper into the game," he told the team's website.

Turner lost his only start against the Braves on Sept. 27, giving up four runs - two earned - over six innings.

The Braves are 12-2 all-time at Marlins Park and have won 20 of 25 overall in the series.

                              Game: 3
                              Venue: Miller Park
                              Date: July 10, 2013 2:10 PM EDT

While star Ryan Braun remains mired in controversy, the Milwaukee Brewers are in position to sweep their first series in almost three months.

They'll look to keep their collective focus and accomplish that feat by handing the Reds a sixth consecutive loss at Miller Park on Wednesday.

Wily Peralta tossed a three-hitter and Logan Schafer hit his first career homer - a two-run shot - in Milwaukee's 2-0 victory Tuesday.

The Brewers (37-52) have not won three straight since a four-game run June 7-10, and last swept a series April 19-21 from the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park.

Milwaukee's latest victory came in Braun's return from missing a month with a thumb injury. The former MVP went 1 for 3, but his return was overshadowed amid word he could be facing a suspension for allegedly failing to cooperate with the investigation of the Biogenesis case.

"We are still in the midst of an active investigation," MLB spokesperson Pat Courtney told the league's official website.

Braun is batting .304 with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 58 games, but is 3 for 15 versus Cincinnati (50-40) this season.

The Reds have allowed nine runs but scored only four during their three-game slide. They've hit .203 and managed nine runs while losing five in a row at Milwaukee.

"The only left-handed hitter in the lineup hits a home run," Reds manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday. "When you're not going too good, these things happen.'

Shin-Soo Choo had one of three Cincinnati hits, and is batting .345 in his last seven games.

Joey Votto, 2 for 14 in the last four, had his nine-game hitting streak at Miller Park end with an 0-for-3 night Tuesday.

Cincinnati's Mike Leake (7-4, 2.73 ERA) takes the mound looking to bounce back after he allowed four runs and two homers in five innings of a 4-2 loss to Seattle on Friday. He was 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA in his previous nine starts.

"It's one game," Leake told the Reds' official website. "I've been throwing the ball well so far. Get rid of (Friday's game)."

The right-hander has not faced the Brewers since 2011, when he posted a 4.91 ERA without a decision in three starts against them.

Milwaukee counters with Johnny Hellweg (0-2, 12.79), who hopes to rebound from Friday when he gave up seven runs - three earned - and seven hits with five walks in 3 2-3 innings of a 12-5 loss to the New York Mets in his second career start and first at home.

The right-hander has allowed 14 runs - eight earned - in 5 1-3 innings of his two starts.

"The potential he has is the stuff that he has,' manager Ron Roenicke said. "He has a great fastball, a real good moving fastball. He's got a nice breaking ball. But he has to command those pitches. Unless you can command them in the big leagues, you're not going to do well.'

Schafer has batted .300 (9 for 30) with five extra-base hits and five RBIs in eight games.

Cincinnati's Chris Heisey will not play after he was hit on the elbow with a pitch Tuesday.

Like that of his team, Matt Cain's season has been disappointing - something that was highlighted in arguably his worst start of 2013 his last time out.

San Francisco hopes for a strong bounce-back effort Wednesday from Cain as the Giants face their former draft pick Zack Wheeler for the first time.

A day after suffering a 16-inning loss in the series opener, San Francisco fell 10-6 on Tuesday, with Marlon Byrd delivering an eighth-inning grand slam. The defeat was the third straight for the Giants (40-49) and 13th in 15 games.

A year after going 16-5 with a 2.79 ERA, Cain (5-5, 4.85 ERA) has mirrored his team's inconsistency. He's allowed seven or more runs four times this season after entering 2013 with seven such outings lifetime.

The latest of those came Friday in the second-shortest outing of his career, as he surrendered eight runs in 2 1-3 innings of a 10-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He walked four after giving up three total walks in his previous three starts.

Cain had posted a 1.82 ERA in his five previous starts.

"He just got out of sync and then couldn't get back on track," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It happens. He's been throwing the ball so well, too, but tonight he was off. There's not a lot you can do as a pitcher when you get out of sync like that."

Cain has gone 3-1 with 2.01 ERA in his last five starts against New York, though he's had little success in getting David Wright out.

Wright, who went 2 for 3 with two runs Tuesday and extended his hitting streak to 10 games, is 11 for 24 with six doubles against Cain.

Wheeler (2-1, 4.29) was drafted sixth overall by San Francisco in 2009 before being sent to the Mets (39-48) in the Carlos Beltran trade in 2011. The right-hander has been shaky in three outings since throwing six scoreless innings in his big league debut, posting a 6.00 ERA in that span.

He surrendered one earned run in five innings of a 12-5 victory at Milwaukee on Friday, yielding seven hits and three walks while throwing 99 pitches.

"I am happy about my outing even though there were some low points,' Wheeler said. "You know throwing 20 pitches an inning and only going five, but I battled out there as best I could and got a good result."

He'll look to take advantage of a San Francisco lineup that continues to come up empty in key situations. The Giants have gone 4 for 26 with runners in scoring position in the series' first two games and 12 for 100 during their 2-13 slump.

The Mets, winners of four of five and 14 of 22, will be trying for their first three-game sweep of the season.
