  • Preview: Rockies (42-47) at Padres (40-49)
    Game: 1
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: July 08, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

On the verge of matching the second-longest losing streak in team history, the San Diego Padres may be catching a break with a visit from another struggling club, the short-handed Colorado Rockies.

The Rockies, though, have dominated the season series and will try for their ninth win in 11 games against the Padres on Monday night.

Since its team-worst 13-game skid in 1994, San Diego (40-49) has lost more than nine in a row once, dropping 10 straight from Aug. 26-Sept. 5, 2010. The club is one defeat away from matching that slide after an 11-7 loss to Washington on Sunday to close a 10-game East Coast road trip.

San Diego scored 16 runs in the three games against the Nationals after totaling seven in the first six games of its skid, but it's given up 32 in the last four contests.

"You're finding different ways to lose each time," catcher Nick Hundley said. "Some days we pitched great and didn't hit. Other days, we swung great and didn't pitch. You try to find a nice combination of both and go from there."

The Padres return home to face a team that's dropped 17 of 24, including six of seven, and has two wins in its last 12 road games. The Rockies (42-47), however, recorded a three-game sweep in their most recent visit to San Diego from April 12-14, the beginning of a season series that's been a source of futility for the Padres.

Achieving similar results in this set could prove more difficult for Colorado with All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Dexter Fowler on the disabled list. Another Rockies All-Star, Carlos Gonzalez, had to leave a 6-1 loss to Arizona on Sunday because of a sprained right middle finger.

The NL home run leader didn't think the injury was serious.

"We're banged up but a lot of teams are. We've got to find a way to win games," manager Walt Weiss told the team's official website. "I feel confident that we'll show up (Monday) in San Diego and win the game. That's how I feel, but we've got to go out and do it."

A bounce-back effort from Tyler Chatwood (4-2, 2.75 ERA) would help. After going 4-1 with a 1.61 ERA in eight outings prior, the right-hander gave up season highs of six runs and 11 hits in a 10-8 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Chatwood allowed four runs over 3 2-3 innings in his only start against San Diego, a 7-4 road win Sept. 14, and will pitch opposite a rejuvenated Edinson Volquez (6-6, 5.26) in his next one.

Volquez has gone 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in five starts since a miserable performance in a 10-9 loss at Colorado on June 7. The right-hander gave up career highs of nine runs and 11 hits in 2 1-3 innings of that game, and is 0-3 with a 13.22 ERA in his last four starts against the Rockies - three this season.

Colorado is hoping Gonzalez can play Monday as he's 10 for 19 with three doubles and two triples all-time against Volquez.

    • Preview: Mets (37-48) at Giants (40-47)
      Game: 1
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: July 08, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

The New York Mets' Matt Harvey is hoping to start the All-Star game in front of his home crowd at Citi Field next week.

Delivering a strong showing in front of NL manager Bruce Bochy would surely help his chances.

Harvey has an opportunity to impress Bochy and add to the San Francisco Giants' recent woes Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.

In his first full season, Harvey (7-2, 2.27 ERA) has the third-lowest ERA in baseball and a league-leading 141 strikeouts. The 24-year-old, along with third baseman David Wright, will represent the Mets in the Midsummer Classic.

"It hasn't quite hit home yet," Harvey told MLB's official website. "It's definitely a huge honor, and I couldn't be more excited that it's in New York."

While Harvey certainly wants to start for the NL, he knows the choice lies in Bochy's hands.

"It's one thing I can't decide," Harvey said. "I've got two more starts left, and I have to go out there obviously and put up zeros, and do everything I can to help the Mets."

Shaky performances such as Wednesday's won't aid his cause or his team's, as he yielded a season-high five runs and nine hits in six-plus innings of a 5-3 loss to Arizona.

"He's all fired up about the All-Star thing, the situation," manager Terry Collins said afterward. "(This) week, he's going to pitch against the Giants, and it's going to be a nice, cool evening. It's going to be in front of Bruce, so I'm sure he's going to be all fired up."

In his only appearance against San Francisco (40-47), the right-hander allowed three runs in six innings of a 4-1 road loss July 31.

Harvey would appear to have a favorable matchup against a Giants team that's gone a major league-worst 5-16 since June 15. San Francisco fell 4-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday after Sergio Romo gave up a three-run double with two outs in the ninth inning.

"There's no question this is a tough loss," Bochy said. "These guys are resilient and are handling this as well as they can."

The Giants have gone 8 for 74 (.108) with runners in scoring position during a 2-11 stretch. Hunter Pence is mired in a 2-for-37 slump and is hitless in his last 22 at_bats. Pablo Sandoval has gone 3 for his last 41.

"Slumps are going to happen to any team," Sunday's starter Chad Gaudin said. "It's how you come out of it that matters."

San Francisco will try to get back on track behind Tim Lincecum (4-9, 4.66), who has compiled a 0.79 ERA in winning five consecutive starts versus New York (37-48). Wright is 2 for 20 with 12 strikeouts in their matchups, while Eric Young and Ike Davis are a combined 6 for 33.

Lincecum, though, has gone 1-7 with a 5.23 ERA in his last nine outings. The right-hander suffered a season-high fourth consecutive loss in a 3-0 defeat at Cincinnati on Tuesday, allowing three runs in 5 1-3 innings.

"I need to attack the (strike) zone better," Lincecum said.

The Mets won 2-1 at Milwaukee on Sunday. Jeremy Hefner threw seven strong innings and Josh Satin, making his first appearance since Ike Davis was recalled Friday, went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

"It's been a good run," said Satin, batting .409 during an 11-game hitting streak. "I would love to get used to it."

          • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

American League gurus have decided that Josh Donaldson doesn't deserve to be an All-Star this year. I disagree......here are his American League ranks in six different offensive categories........

            -- .319 batting average, 4th in AL

            -- .536 slugging percentage, 5th in AL

            -- .388 on-base percentage, 7th in AL

-- 57 runs batted in, T7 in AL

            -- .924 OPS, 5th in AL

            -- 23 doubles, T7 in AL

Plus he's an excellent defender. If you put A-Rod's name above these stats on a first place team, he'd win the American League MVP.

            *****

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.......

            13) Bruce Bochy must've been preoccupied with All-Star stuff; his Giants batted out of order Saturday, which cost Buster Posey an RBI double. Don't see that a lot in the major leagues.

            12) Odd situation with the Mets Saturday, when veteran P Shaun Marcum requested that John Buck catch his game, when the backup Anthony Recker was supposed to play. Terry Collins gave Marcum what he wanted, but it can't be great for team chemistry.

Marcum is 1-10, 5.29 this season; he should be thankful he has a job.

            11) Since June 4, Mets' Jeremy Hefner has a 1.64 ERA, best in baseball; Recker caught his game Sunday and Hefner won again, so he can't be as bad a catcher as Marcum apparently thinks he is.

            10) Ike Davis update: Since coming back from AAA, Davis is 3-7 with four walks. Looks like he'll be platooning at 1B with Josh Satin, who is 15 for his last 33, and playing a solid first base. Mets have too many guys who can hit, but don't have a defined position in the field.

            9) Former used car salesman Alan R. Selig takes a lot of grief in this space, but one thing he got very right; Miller Park is a tremendous stadium, a great place to watch a game, no matter how bad the weather. Selig used to eat his lunch in his car watching the ballpark being built.

Miller Park makes you wonder why Minnesota didn't just do the same exact thing when they built their new ballpark. Not having a roof on the ballpark in Minneapolis makes no sense.

            8) If you like to wager on run lines in baseball, note that St Louis is 12-6 when Adam Wainwright starts, with nine of 12 wins by 2+ runs.

            7) Graeme McDowell won a European tour event in France Sunday; in his last eight events, McDowell missed five cuts, won the other three.

            6) Jonas Blixt got his first PGA win at Greenbrier, the 11th first-time winner on Tour this season; last group tried like hell to beat darkness to get their last round in-- they played 18 holes in 3:40.

            5) Thunderstorm Sunday made Greenbrier the 15th tournament out of 28 this season with at least one weather delay.

            4) Atlanta has had 40 inches of rain this year, Seattle only 18.

            3) Miami Hurricanes haven't been to a bowl since 2010, haven't won a bowl since 2006; they've got 18 starters back, including their whole OL, a senior QB- this could be a big year for Al Golden's team. Its been a while.

            2) Baylor Bears won their last two bowl games, scoring 116 points; how long can the Bears keep coach Art Briles in Waco?

            1) Looking through Nebraska stuff, how is Taylor Martinez still playing for the Cornhuskers? Seems like the kid has been in Lincoln since they had Mike Rozier at tailback!!! This is Martinez' senior year (finally); he's started 38 games for Bo Pelini's team.

Padres losers of nine straight; faves Monday vs. Rockies
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After fighting back to a 40-40 record following a 9-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on June 28, the San Diego Padres have dropped nine straight games to fall to the basement of the National League West.

Any $100 bettor would be up $584.48 if they had faded the Padres in each game of their current losing streak.

Though they have scored plenty of runs in their three most recent losses to the Washington Nationals, San Diego’s bats have really let them down. In the first six games of their losing streak, the Friars managed just seven runs. Even worse, they posted an average of .180 in those first six losses.

The Padres (-122) return home after a nine-game road trip to host the Colorado Rockies (+113) on Monday. San Diego is a better bet at PETCO Park, posting a 25-18 record to date.

                            • Hot & Not - AL Edition

                              July 8, 2013

For the last time prior to the All-Star break, we're going to be taking a look at the teams that are hot and the teams that are not in MLB betting action in the American League.

                              $$$-Makers

Tampa Bay Rays (8-1, +$676 in L/9) – We knew the Rays were going to go on a run at some point, and they have finally done it. With LHP David Price pitching so well off of his injury, this team is clearly one of the most dangerous in the bigs.

On Deck: Look out! The Rays very well could win at least five of these last seven games before the break, as they have the Twins and the Astros coming to Tropicana Field this week.

New York Yankees (6-1, +$496 in L/7) – New York really needed to put together a great week to stay in the thick of the fight in the American League. It got what it needed in the form of a four-game sweep against the Twins, and it did even better against the Orioles by taking two out of three to get back within a half game of second place in the division.

On Deck: The Yanks too, have a chance to make a move in the AL East this week. They have seven games at home against the Royals and the Twins, and again, they could win five of their last seven very reasonably to get to 53-42 or so by the break.

Seattle Mariners (4-2, +$422 in L/6) – The Mariners have the top two pitchers in the American League by the standard of ERA in RHP Felix Hernandez and RHP Hisashi Iwakuma. However, when these two aren't on the mound, the M's flat out stink. Last week though, the offense did enough to back up the pitching to win four of six, including two out of three against the Reds on the road.

On Deck: There really is a change for the M's to make a move here over the course of the next few weeks. They have 14 of their next 17 games at home, and the three on the road are in Houston.

                              $$$-Burners

Chicago White Sox (6-17, -$1,330 in L/23) – Or if you'd rather, the Sox are 10-27 and down $1,899 in their last 27 games. Both streaks are equally impressive. Chicago is one of the worst teams in the league for sure, and it is going to give the Astros and Marlins a run for their money for the worst record in the bigs.

On Deck: Does it matter? Three against the Tigers and Phillies on the road are probably only going to make the first half of this disastrous season seem all the more worse.

Minnesota Twins (4-12, -$720 in L/16) – Minnesota was always going to fall out of the race at some point, but this was an epic fail throughout a two and a half week period. The Twins have dropped 12 out of 16, and the fact of the matter is that things are going to get a whole heck of a lot worse.

On Deck: And here's why...Four games at Tampa Bay, three games at New York, three at home against Cleveland, three at LA, and four at Seattle are on deck. Thanks for playing this season, Minnesota. The next time we address this, the Twinkies will be nearly 20-games below .500.

Texas Rangers (3-3, -$315 in L/6) – Are the Rangers the coldest team in baseball? Absolutely not. In fact, they didn't even have a terrible week at 3-3. However, when you lose a game as a -320 favorite at home against the Astros, one of the worst teams that we have seen in baseball in quite some time, you qualify for "who's not" in the American League.

On Deck: Texas is only a half-game back of the A's with a week to go into the break, but this next month is absolutely brutal. The Rangers have to play the Orioles, Tigers, Orioles, Yankees, Tigers, Angels, Diamondbacks, A's, and Angels from now through August 12th!
