      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 2

      Saturday's games

      Top games
Penn State blew 14-3 halftime lead last week, lost at home to Ohio U in first game of O'Brien era; they're now just 2-13 vs spread in non-league games since '09. Virginia is 5-7-1 vs spread in last 13 games as favorite at home- they've got junior QB with 14 starts, and seven starters back on offense, three on OL. State was -3 in turnovers last week, passed ball 48 times, ran it only 22 times for 97 yards, and allowed Ohio to convert 13 of 21 third down plays. Game opened Virginia -5, was bet up to -10.

Central Florida has 8 starters back on offense but soph QB who made his first start last week, in 56-14 rout of hapless Akron; UCF was 14-19 passing for 180 yards, also had 206 rushing yards, so good balance, but now they're going way up in class, visiting Buckeye squad that ran ball for 294 yards last week and scored 56 points, after scoreless first 15:00. OSU also has soph QB, but he's made 11 starts; State covered 15 of its last 21 tries as a home favorite. Since '08, UCF is 10-7 outside C-USA.

Favorites covered last two UNC-Wake Forest games, after dogs covered four of previous five; Tar Heels lost two of last three visits here, as three of last four played here were decided by 21+ points. Wake struggled to beat I-AA Liberty 20-17 last week, outgained by 70 yards, running ball for less than 100 yards. Carolina was up 49-0 at half, gained 524 yards in 62-0 win over I-AA Elon. Since 2006, UNC is 4-7 vs spread as a road favorite. Wake Forest is 14-6 as home underdog since '04.

First SEC game for Missouri is hot ticket in Columbia; Mizzou has six starters back on both sides of ball, only two starters back on OL and QB with 14 career starts. Since '04, Mizzou is 3-4 as a home dog; they're 6-3 as underdog overall last two years. Georgia ran ball for 227 yards, passed for 258 in home win over Buffalo last week; they're 5-2 as road favorites since '09. Dawgs have 6 starters back on offense, 2 on OL, 9 on defense; QB Murray has made 28 career starts.

Kansas State (+13) pulled 28-24 upset at Miami LY, running ball for 265 yards; Wildcats are 4-6 as home favorites last four years- they've got 8 starters back on offense, 2 on OL, a senior QB with 16 starts, 6 starters back on defense. K-State was only up 9-6 at half vs Missouri State in its opener, but they pulled away in second half. Miami gave up 442 passing yards last week in 41-32 conference win at BC (led 21-20 at half). 'canes are 9-7 as underdogs last five years; they lost 7 starters on offense.

Notre Dame won six of last seven games with Purdue, winning last four by average score of 31-16; Boilermakers lost six of last seven visits here, losing last three by average score of 33-18. Irish were overseas last week, travel this early in season has to be draining, especially with Michigan St game on deck, much higher profile game. Notre Dame is 15-28-2 as home favorite, since 2003. Boilers are 7-10 as road dog last four years; they get senior QB Ter Bush back from suspension for this.

Wisconsin (-20.5) crushed Oregon State 35-0 at home LY, outrushing the Beavers 208-23, but since '07, Wisky is just 6-9-1 vs spread if favored on foreign soil. Badgers have new QB in Maryland transfer O'Brien, who had 219 passing yards in 26-21 win over I-AA Northern Iowa (was 13-0 at half) last week. Oregon State's opener vs Nicholls State was ppd due to the hurricane in Louisiana; Beavers have 7 starters back on offense, 2 on OL, a soph QB with 10 starts already and 8 starters back on defense.

Underdogs covered eight of last 11 Iowa State-Iowa games, with Iowa winning three of last four. Cyclones lost last four visits here by average score of 24-10. State has 7 starters back on offense, 3 on OL, soph QB with 7 starts and 5 starters back on defense- they beat Tulsa 35-23 last week at home, moving chains 28 times. Hawkeyes were lucky Northern Illinois doesn't have a QB who can pass, or they would've lost last week in Chicago; Iowa is 7-4 as a home favorite the last couple seasons.

LSU is 16-27-1 vs spread as a home favorite under Miles; they went to Seattle in '09 and held off Washington 31-23 (-17) playing against Titans' QB Jake Locker. Bayou Bengals have wealth of talent, with 4 starters back on OL, a more talented QB this year and 6 starters back on defense, Washington lost its bowl game 67-56 LY, so they changed DCs and last week held San Diego State to 128 passing yards in 21-12 win. Huskies are 7-15 as road underdogs since '07, 10-12 as dogs under Sarkisian.

Auburn won 10 of last 11 games with Mississippi State, winning five in row here, last two by unlikely 17-14/3-2 scores; favorites covered six of their last seven visits to Starkville. Since '08, Auburn is just 5-10 against spread coming off a loss; they've covered three of last 12 as road dogs, 5 of last 18 overall on road. Miss State is 5-3 vs spread in last eight games as home favorite. Auburn gave up 320 rushing yards in loss to Clemson last week. Miss State had two defensive scores against a I-AA team.

First SEC game for Texas A&M team that has new coach, new QB and had its first game ppd last week, because of a hurricane. Aggies have four starters back on OL, 7 on offense, 6 on defense. Since '04, they're 20-15 as home favorites. Florida had 7 starters back on offense, 10 on defense but they're 0-6 vs spread as underdogs over last two seasons. Gators had 365-327 edge in yardage over Bowling Green last week, led just 14-7 at half, finally won 27-14 (-29). Soph Driskill has emerged as starting QB.

UCLA had 343 rushing yards, 303 passing in 49-24 win at Rice in their opener, but they're up in class here, facing Nebraska squad that had 632 yards in 49-20 win over Southern Miss last week. Bruins are 5-3 as dogs at home last two years; they've got 7 starters back on offense, 9 more on defense, but they started five freshmen on offense at Rice. Cornhuskers are 9-4-1 as road favorites under Pelini; they've got 7 starters back on both sides of ball, and junior QB (Martinez) with 25 career starts.

Arizona State went to Illinois LY and outgained Illini by 122 yards, but lost 17-14 (+2); now teams meet again in desert, with both sides having a new HC. Illini QB Scheelhaase has banged up ankle, is a ??; they're 4-9 vs spread in last 13 road games. Illini has 7 starters back on both sides of ball. ASU lost 7 starters in both sides of ball; they've got new coach, new QB, three new starters on OL; they're 29-21 vs spread at home since '04. Illinois had four takeaways and a defensive TD in 24-7 win last week.

            Georgia at Missouri

            September 7, 2012

Missouri is poised to make its SEC debut Saturday night at home against Georgia in a crucial SEC East showdown. Most betting shops opened the Bulldogs as 3 ½-point favorites.

The line got down to as low as 1 ½ at a few offshores but as of Friday afternoon, most spots had UGA favored by 2 ½. The total is 54 ½ and bettors can take the Tigers to win outright for a plus-115 return (risk $100 to win $115).

The rest of the SEC East will certainly be rooting for Missouri (1-0 straight up, 0-0 against the spread) to successfully break into the league. That’s because Georgia (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) essentially goes into the season with a one-game lead over the rest of the division due to an advantageous schedule.

For the second straight year, Mark Richt’s team will not have to play the SEC West’s Big Three of Alabama, LSU and Arkansas. Meanwhile, the rest of the East, with the lone exception of Vanderbilt, has to play at least one of those schools and South Carolina must face Arkansas and LSU.

But my theory of UGA’s invisible one-game lead disappears if it has to tote a loss back home to Athens.

Speaking of Athens, four Georgia starters are expected to be left there due to suspensions. Bacarri Rambo, Sanders Commings, Chase Vasser and Alec Ogletree are reportedly suspended, although Richt has attempted to play coy on this topic.

What we know for certain is that this quartet didn’t dress in Week 1. Plus, Rambo’s high-school coach has confirmed to reporters that his suspension is for four games. The other players are expected to complete two-game suspensions this weekend.

Georgia failed to cover the number in Saturday’s 45-23 win over Buffalo as a 38-point home ‘chalk.’ Freshman running back Todd Gurley stole the show by scoring three touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return. Gurley needed only eight carries to produce 100 rushing yards and a pair of scoring runs from 10 and 55 yards out.

Junior QB Aaron Murray completed 15-of-26 passes for 258 yards and three TDs without an interception. Tavarres King hauled in six receptions for 117 yards and a 63-yard TD grab.

Richt had to be concerned with his defense, though. The Bulls had 347 yards of total offense and rushed for 199 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. The Dawgs will have to get a better effort defensively to emerge from Columbia unscathed.

Missouri dealt out woodshed treatment to SE Louisiana in the form of a 62-10 clubbing in a non-lined matchup against an FCS school. James Franklin appeared to be fully recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, connecting on 13-of-21 throws for 131 yards and one TD without an interception. Franklin rushed six times for 39 yards, but gamblers can expect to see him using his legs more often this week.

Kendial Lawrence rushed 10 times for 121 yards and a pair of TDs. T.J. Moe had three receptions for 26 yards and one score, while freshman sensation Dorial Green-Beckham had three catches for 32 yards. ‘DGB’ was considered the No. 1 prep player in America by most recruitniks and Gary Pinkel’s is hoping for immediate contributions from his six-foot, six-inch WR.

While UGA is dealing with personnel issues in the form of suspensions, Mizzou is trying to overcome a rash of injuries to its offensive line. Senior OG Jack Meiners is ‘questionable’ with a knee injury, while senior OG Travis Ruth is ‘out’ for the season. Also, reserve OG Mark Hill and reserve OT Taylor Chappell have both been lost to season-ending injuries.

Since 2003, Missouri has only been a home underdog nine times. The Tigers have compiled a 5-4 spread record in those situations.

During Richt’s 12-year tenure at UGA, the Dawgs have gone 18-12-1 ATS in 31 games as road favorites.

Kickoff in Columbia is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

            **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--Kent St. senior WR Tyshon Goode is ‘doubtful’ at Kentucky with a hamstring injury. Goode was the Flashes’ second-leading receiver in 2011 with 24 catches for 316 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats are going to be without their two best RBs with both Coshik Williams (back) and Josh Clemons (knee) ‘out.’ UK is a seven-point home favorite and the total is 44.

--When Western Kentucky played at LSU last year as a 41 ½-point underdog, it took the cash in a 42-9 loss. The Tigers were in a classic letdown spot one week after beating Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This season the Hilltoppers, who returned nine starters on offense and seven on defense from a team that finished 7-5, go to Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide as 39-point puppies. Once again, Western Ky. catches its opponent in a letdown (and look-ahead) situation with ‘Bama coming off the big win over Michigan with a trip to Arkansas on deck.

--Although the game will be played in East Rutherford at Giants Stadium rather than at the Carrier Dome, it’s fair to classify this as a road favorite spot for Southern Cal against Syracuse. On Lane Kiffin’s watch, the Trojans are 4-3 ATS as road ‘chalk.’ I’ve been hesitant all week to pull the trigger on a Syracuse play (+26 at most books as of late Friday afternoon), but I certainly lean to the Orange. Doug Marrone’s squad lost a 38-17 decision at USC last year. I made the number 21.

--Nebraska star RB Rex Burkhead is ‘out’ at UCLA due to a sprained MCL. The Cornhuskers, who have thrived under Bo Pelini with a 9-4-1 spread record as road favorites, are favored by 5 ½ over the Bruins.

Florida at Texas A&M: What bettors need to know

Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (+1, 49.5)

After its season opener was postponed by Hurricane Isaac, Texas A&M finally gets underway Saturday at what is sure to be an electric Kyle Field. The Aggies make their long-awaited move to the Southeastern Conference by hosting No. 23 Florida.

Texas A&M has a new coach in Kevin Sumlin, a redshirt freshman quarterback in Johnny Manziel and one of the most daunting schedules possible. But excitement is at an all-time high.

The Gators weren’t overly impressive in their season-opening 27-14 victory over Bowling Green, but they did get clarity at quarterback when Jeff Driskel won the starting job over Jacoby Brissett.

              TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS.

LINE: Texas A&M opened as high as -2.5 for its SEC debut but money on the Gators has flipped the spread, currently sitting with the Aggies as +1 home underdogs.

WEATHER: The forecast for Kyle Field is calling for winds reaching speeds of up to 18 mph, blowing NNE. Temperatures will be in a mid 80s with a 20 percent chance of rain.

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-0, 0-0 SEC): Coach Will Muschamp picked Driskel largely because of his mobility and knack for extending plays. He went 10-of-16 for 114 yards against the Falcons, including a 50-yard scoring strike to Frankie Hammond Jr. that stretched Florida’s lead to 10 in the fourth quarter. Running back Mike Gillislee ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, giving Florida the power-running identity it had lacked. The Gators have one of the best linebacking corps in the SEC and cornerback Marcus Roberson is a ballhawk who made a key interception against Bowling Green.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (0-0, 0-0 SEC): Manziel will be the first Aggies freshman to start a season opener. As he tries to run Sumlin’s up-tempo offense, he’ll have the luxury of leaning on a running game led by Christine Michael. The senior was on pace for a 1,200-yard season last year until tearing up his knee, but is fully healthy now. Freshman running back Trey Williams wowed observers throughout fall camp. All-American left tackle Luke Joeckel anchors a strong offensive line that should clear holes and give Manziel time to find wide receiver Ryan Swope (180 career catches). Defensive end Damontre Moore (17.5 tackles for loss last year) leads a unit replacing five starters.

              TRENDS:

              * Gators are 0-6 ATS in their last six conference games.
              * Aggies are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
              * Under is 4-0 in Gators' last four road games.
              * Over is 15-6-1 in Aggies' last 22 games in September.

              EXTRA POINTS:

              1. The all-time series is tied 1-1, Florida winning at home in 1962 and the Aggies claiming a Sun Bowl victory in 1977. Florida is 1-7-2 all-time in games played in Texas.

              2. Sumlin’s offense at Houston last season ranked No. 1 nationally in passing yards, total yards and scoring (49.3).

              3. Florida was picked to finish third in the SEC East, while A&M was selected fifth in the SEC West.

Georgia at Missouri: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Georgia Bulldogs at Missouri Tigers (+2, 54)

Missouri’s much-anticipated Southeastern Conference debut didn’t need any extra juice. But with seventh-ranked Georgia coming to a sold-out Faurot Field on Saturday, Tigers defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson took a swipe at the Bulldogs, calling their style of play “old-man football.”

Georgia didn’t take the bait and get involved in a trash-talking war, and Richardson was promptly banned from talking to the media. But it’s another subplot to this intriguing matchup pitting Mizzou’s high-octane spread attack against Georgia’s traditional pro-style offense. The Bulldogs could have trouble containing Tigers dual-threat QB James Franklin after Georgia allowed Buffalo’s signal-caller to run for 89 yards on 14 carries.

Missouri will be hard-pressed to stop Georgia freshman Todd Gurley, who amassed 227 yards and three touchdowns on 10 touches (100 yards on eight carries, 127 yards on two kickoff returns).

                TV: 7:45 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE: Missouri opened as high as +3.5 but have been bet down to +2. The total has dropped from 55 to 54 points.

WEATHER: The forecast for Memorial Stadium is calling for a chance of thunderstorms with a 47 percent chance of rain. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s with winds blowing WSW at 6 mph.

ABOUT NO. 7 GEORGIA (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Bulldogs were picked to repeat as SEC East champions. Quarterback Aaron Murray is a darkhorse Heisman candidate who threw for 258 yards and three scores without an interception in Georgia’s 45-23 victory over Buffalo. The Bulldogs played without three suspended starters - safety Bacarri Rambo, linebacker Alec Ogletree and cornerback Sanders Commings. Commings and outside linebacker Chase Vasser remain suspended for Saturday, with coach Mark Richt yet to clarify the status of Rambo and Ogletree. Wide receiver Marlon Brown (hamstring), cornerback Malcolm Mitchell (ankle) and running back Richard Samuel (hip) all were limited in practice, but expected to play.

ABOUT MISSOURI (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Tigers’ 62-10 victory over Southeast Louisiana might have been too easy as Missouri led 28-0 after running 12 plays. The Tigers scored on an interception return, a fumble return and two punt returns by Marcus Murphy, the SEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week. Franklin has an array of dangerous targets, including senior wideout T.J. Moe and freshman Dorial-Green Beckham, the nation’s No. 1 recruit. Each caught three balls in the opener. Missouri was picked to finish fourth in the SEC East, behind Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

                TRENDS:

                * Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
                * Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in September.
                * Over is 4-1 in Bulldogs' last five games in September.
                * Over is 4-1 in Tigers' last five games in September.

                EXTRA POINTS

                1. Georgia won the only previous meeting 14-0 in the 1960 Orange Bowl.

                2. Mizzou RB Kendial Lawrence has run for 492 yards over his last five games.

                3. Tigers LB Will Ebner (neck) and G Jack Meiners (knee) are listed as questionable.

Big East Tussle Pits Rutgers At South Florida

Those loud sounds you might have heard from Las Vegas sports books on Saturday afternoon were probably the screams of joy from South Florida backers whose team finally broke a debilitating pointspread slump with a dramatic, last-minute comeback win at Nevada. Or perhaps the groans of those who were burned by the Bulls’ late rally for a 32-31 win at Reno.

Whatever, South Florida’s pointspread woes might finally be in the rear-view mirror. Now let’s see if series history repeats itself when the Bulls host Rutgers on Thursday night in Tampa.

A quick check of the Don Best college football odds screen notes that USF has been posted as an early 10-point favorite at the majority of Las Vegas sports books for this Big East Conference lid-lifter for both the Bulls and visiting Scarlet Knights. Kickoff time will be 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Raymond James Stadium, with ESPN’s Thursday night TV crew featuring Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and David Pollack on hand to describe the action.

We mentioned that series history between USF and Rutgers for good reason. That’s because the Scarlet Knights have covered the spread in the last five meetings in a rivalry that has also seen the underdog side cover six of seven since 2005. Which, if history holds true, could prove good news for Scarlet Knights backers on Thursday night when these sides renew acquaintances off Dale Mabry Highway.

Both also enter the contest at 2-0 straight up in the early going, although of the two, Rutgers has been less challenged thus far, its wins achieved vs. subpar Tulane and lower-level Howard. Interestingly, the Scarlet Knights could cover neither of those games as new head coach Kyle Flood, promoted from within the staff of predecessor Greg Schiano (now coaching the NFL Bucs at this same Raymond James Stadium), makes his debut on the sidelines.

No question, the Scarlet Knight “D” is going to get a much stiffer test on Thursday than it has after holding Tulane and Howard to a mere 12 points total. Rutgers ranks sixth nationally in total defense (205.5 yards pg) and fourth in scoring defense (6 ppg) but those numbers are understandably deceiving thanks to the opposition. Nonetheless, many Big East observers believe this could be the Scarlet Knights’ best stop unit since Schiano’s memorable 2006 team that finished 11-2.

Defensive stalwarts for Rutgers include LB Khaseem Greene, who has four straight games with double-digit tackles dating to late last season, and CB Brandon Jones who has scored TDs in each of the first two games via an interception and blocked punt.

The offense, however, has been a bit sluggish, needing scoring help from the “D” and special teams in both outings. Moreover, Flood is a bit concerned with his place-kicking after a couple of botched snaps resulted in a pair of blown PATs vs. Howard.

Thus far, QB Gary Nova has posted unspectacular numbers (144 ypg through the air with 3 TD passes and 2 picks), although WR Brandon Coleman has TD receptions on three of his four catches. Mostly, the Scarlet Knight “O” has been pivoting around RB Jawan Jamison (222 YR and 7.9 ypc) as the aerial games works out its kinks. Flood also has some OL injury concerns heading into the conference opener, with starters G Andre Civil and C Betim Bujari both iffy for the Thursday clash.

Offense doesn’t seem to be an issue at the moment for Skip Holtz’ USF side that scored a pair of TDs in the last three minutes to steal that one-point win at Reno. Moreover, QB B.J. Daniels had to drive the Bulls 91 yards for the winning TD in the last 1:38, completing the comeback with a 56-yard TD pass to WR Andre Davis with 38 seconds to play. A few minutes earlier, Daniels had completed a 52-yard TD pass to WR Chris Dunkley to cut the margin to 31-26.

Daniels finished with 363 passing yards against the Wolf Pack as USF piled up 572 yards of total offense at Mackay Stadium. Adding in another 63 rushing yards, Daniels was responsible for a whopping 416 yards of offense for the afternoon.

Another plus for the Bulls in Reno was the re-emergence of sr. RB Lindsey Lamar, who was ticketed for a redshirt season until junior Marcus Shaw suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of the Nevada game. Lamar responded with 85 yards rushing on just eight carries, including a 35-yard TD run to pull the Bulls within 21-20 in the third quarter.

Besides Rutgers’ pointspread success in this series, recent meetings between these two have also been nail-biters, with the Scarlet Knights scoring a mild 20-17 overtime upset last season at Piscataway and USF squeezing out a 28-27 win the previous year in Tampa.

Under Flood predecessor Schiano, Rutgers was 13-4-1 vs. the number its last 18 as a road 'dog extending to late in the 2005 season. Meanwhile, Holtz is just 5-11 vs. the points as a favorite since taking the USF job in 2010. The Bulls had also dropped four in a row vs, the line and nine of their last 10 vs. the number before the last-minute thrills at Reno.

Games to Watch - Week 3

                            September 10, 2012

Saturday - Alabama at Arkansas (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET)

                            Matchup Skinny

John L. Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Thursday and 48 hours later he lost at home 34 - 31 to ULM or the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks for those of you scoring at home. To make matters worse, early reports said Arkansas lost their All-SEC quarterback Tyler Wilson to a collar bone injury but he's now listed as day-to-day with a concussion. Now Alabama comes to town. And you thought your week was bad? This game could end about as well as a motorcycle ride with Bobby Petrino for the Razorbacks. With all due respect to John L. Smith he is no Bobby Petrino…and Bobby Petrino was no Nick Saban. Nick Saban took over at Alabama 5 years ago and in a related story, 'Bama has won five straight over the Hogs. Arkansas was a great football team the last two years under Petrino, unfortunately for them they play in not only a conference, but a division that has won the last three BCS national championships, four of the last five and had a runner-up. In that two-year stretch Arkansas has only lost 5 games…all of which have been to teams ranked seventh or higher in the polls, including Bama twice. It's basically like being an elite PGA golfer born the same year as Tiger Woods. In last year's 38-14 blowout loss in Tuscaloosa, Arkansas was outgained by the Tide 197 to 17 on the ground. The good news for Arkansas is that running back Trent Richardson is gone. So are most of 'Bama's defensive starters, including three first-round draft picks that led the nation in just about every defensive statistic possible for Alabama last year. The bad news for Arkansas is that Saban is still there and he simply reloaded with freshman running back T.J. Yeldon and another stellar defense that has already held Heisman hopeful Denard Robinson to a pedestrian like game. Maybe the scariest thing for Arkansas and the rest of the SEC for that matter is that fact that AJ McCarron is actually starting to look like more than just the bus driver on offense. The only thing Arkansas has going for them is RB Knile Davis, and he will need to have the game of his life and get the Arkansas faithful in it and loud early if they want to have any chance of winning this game…and quite frankly, even then it won't be enough. The questions isn't will Bama win, but by how many?

Saturday - Florida at Tennessee (ESPN, 6:00 p.m. ET)

                            Matchup Skinny

This rivalry has produced some of Steve Spurrier's finest work; "You can't spell Citrus without UT" and "I know why Peyton came back for his senior year: he wanted to be a three-time Citrus Bowl MVP." Unfortunately for those of us on the outside looking in, those days are gone, and so is the hype that once surrounded this game. While he's no Steve Spurrier, Florida coach Will Muschamp did take a jab at the Aggies immediately following their win on Saturday saying, "To be able to disappoint these people is a lot of fun." No doubt a jab that stems from his days as the defensive coordinator at Texas. Once upon a time this was the annual early season matchup in college football. The winner was pretty much a lock for the SEC East spot in the SEC Championship. Now, Florida has won seven straight in the series, including a 33-23 win last year in "The Swamp. " Both teams enter the game 2-0, with Florida coming off a tough win (20-17) at Kyle Field spoiling A&M's SEC debut after a lackluster week one effort against Bowling Green. Tennessee comes in off a "hand-ride" win over lowly Georgia State (51-13) after an impressive week one victory over N.C. State (35-21). As for which team will move to 3-0 and leave this game as a legitimate contender to Georgia for the SEC East will come down to the Florida defense against a rejuvenated Tennessee offense. Can Muschamp and his defense slow down QB Tyler Bray, his emerging WR's Cordarrelle Patterson, Justin Hunter and the high-flying Tennessee offense? If so Florida could pull off the rare SEC road upset, if not Vols' head coach Derek Dooley may finally be able to cool down the hot seat he's been on the last two years.

Saturday - Notre Dame at Michigan State (ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET)

                            Matchup Skinny

Last year the Irish rolled over Sparty in South Bend 31-13. However nine of the last 12 meetings between these two teams have been decided by seven points or less and that includes two overtime decisions. None more exciting than two years ago right here in East Lansing with MSU lining up for a 46-yard field goal to tie the game in overtime. However Aaron Bates took the snap, and hit Charlie Gantt for a 29-yard touchdown that gave the Spartans a 34-31 victory, which sent coach Mark Dantonio into such a state of elation that he was taken to the hospital after the game for a heart attack (where he made a full recovery). ND opened the year in Ireland and looked impressive (50-10) against a less than impressive Navy squad and then hung on in week two to beat Purdue (20-17) at home on a last minute field goal. Sparty is also 2-0 coming off a blowout win against Central Michigan and an impressive opening week home win against Boise State. ND leads the all-time series 46-28-1, although Sparty has won 10 of the last 15. This game should come down to whichever team wins the battle at the line of scrimmage between the Irish defensive front and the Spartans nasty offensive line. Notre Dame won that battle last year and easily won the game. Look for Sparty to have revenge on their minds as short favorites at home against this Irish Saturday night.

USC at Stanford - The Cardinal won 56-48 in triple overtime at USC last year. This isn't last year. Former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck spent this past Sunday throwing interceptions all over Soldier Field while Heisman hopeful Matt Barkley returned to USC and has looked very efficient so far against two lesser opponents. With Luck gone, Stanford took a step back in week one grinding out a 20-17 win while being out gained by San Jose State. However they looked much better in week two albeit against the non Mike Krzyzewski version of the Duke Blue Devils winning 50-13. This will be the first real test USC will face this season and on the road no less. So far road games have already stumped several top 25 teams this year, which makes you think that the Trojans could be the next highly-ranked road victim as an early touchdown favorite or do they simply have too much horsepower for the Cardinal?

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn - Seriously. This game might not have made many people's radar three weeks ago but the biggest story in college football so far this season was clearly ULM's overtime win at Arkansas last weekend. It's the ULM Warhawks against War Eagle with one team looking to remain undefeated and the other just trying to get their first win of the season. While some will consider the Warhawks win over Arkansas a fluke, keep in mind this is the same team that beat Alabama back in 2007. Auburn has looked less than impressive in their two losses so far to Clemson (19-26) and Mississippi State (10-28) while ULM QB Kolton Browning accounted for 481 yards of total offense and four touchdowns Saturday night against Arkansas. Another alarming stat to consider is that Gene Chizik's winning percentage was obviously 100% while he had Cam Newton, however Chizik's winning percentage as a head coach in the years he didn't have Cam Newton is an alarming 40%. With all that said, the Warhawks are still opened as 17-point underdogs against Auburn. For a lesser team that might be too much to overcome but ULM has already won in the SEC this year as a 30-point dog and will look to post an undefeated SEC record before returning to their day jobs in the Sun Belt conference.

                              ACC Report - Week 3

                              September 11, 2012

Saturday - Wake Forest at Florida State (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

                              Matchup Five-Star Game
The Demon Deacons struggled mightily in their home opener against FCS opponent Liberty, but they looked awfully good in a 28-27 win in their ACC opener at home against North Carolina last weekend. While the Deacs allowed 428 total yards of offense, they were able to managed 426 total yards of offense, markedly improved over their opening effort. Meanwhile, FSU steamrolled FCS punching bag Savannah State by a 55-0 score. And it might have ended up worse, but the game was called due to lightning in the third quarter. On the season, the 'Noles have outscored their opponents 124-3 in about seven quarters of action. However, that was against two FCS opponents. Vegas isn't that thrilled about Wake's win last week, as they are still a four-touchdown dog in Tallahassee. Some might be quick to jump on Wake Forest, as they 6-2 ATS in their past eight games against Florida State. In addition, the underdog is 7-1 ATS during that same span. FSU has the ability to pile up points quickly, but QB Tanner Price could very well keep the Deacs within hailing distance.

Saturday - North Carolina at Louisville (ABC/ESPN2, 3:30 p.m. ET)

                              Matchup Four-Star Game

The Tar Heels were impressive in their opening game thumping of FCS foe Elon, but bettors were sorely disappointed if they risked a lot on North Carolina at Wake Forest last Saturday. UNC looked like such a strong play, too, especially coupled with Wake's performance in their opener. Now, the Heels hit the road for Louisville, a team they are 0-4 ATS against in the past four meetings. The Heels are also 1-4 ATS in their past five road games, and 1-4 ATS in their past five games against Big East opponents. Cardinals QB Teddy Bridgewater has been tremendously efficient in his two starts, completing 49 of 60 passes for 576 yards and two touchdowns. He should find plenty of room to pass against a Carolina defense which allowed 362 passing yards to Wake last weekend. Louisville looks like the must play, but remember, Carolina looked that way going into their game a week ago.

Saturday - Virginia at Georgia Tech (ESPNU, 3:30 p.m. ET)

                              Matchup Three-Star Game

The Cavaliers of Virginia did enough to slide by beleaguered Penn State last week, 17-16. Still, the Cavaliers have a lot of questions heading into their ACC opener against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Ramblin' Wreck bounced back from a disappointing opening game loss at Virginia Tech to thump the Blue Hose of Presbyterian last weekend. The good news for the Cavaliers is that they are 4-1 ATS in their past five conference games. The bad news is that they are 0-4-1 ATS in their past five games in the month of September, and 0-3-1 ATS in the past four games overall. The Jackets are 6-0 ATS in their past six September contests, but 2-5-1 ATS in their past eight games in conference. Really, there are no clear-cut head-to-head trends to hang your hat on. However, the under has cashed five times in the past six meetings between the sides, and the under is 13-3 in Virginia's past 16 games overall. The under is 5-2 in Georgia Tech's past seven ACC games, including Week 1 at Virginia Tech.

Saturday - Boston College at Northwestern (Big-10 Network, 3:30 p.m. ET)

                              Matchup Two-Star Game

For the second straight week in the 'two-star' matchup, we get a Brain Bowl. Northwestern is 2-0 ATS and SU this season after dispatching Syracuse on the road (42-41) and Vanderbilt at home (23-13). The Wildcats have looked like they can hang with anyone, so their three- or four-point favorite status raises some eyebrows. A lot of people will be quick to jump all over this one, and rightly so since the Wildcats have done no wrong this season. However, consider this - the Wildcats are just 2-7 ATS in their past nine home games, and 7-15 ATS in their past 22 games in the month of September. In addition, they are just 16-35 ATS in their past 51 games following a straight up win. If you can separate past history involving past players, and look to this year's body of work only, you'll be able to take Northwestern without hesitation. Look at this, though, and you'll see it's not so clear cut. BC is 4-0 ATS in their past four road games, and 4-1 ATS in their past five overall. The better play might be going under on an inflated 54-point O/U line. The Wildcats are 6-1 in their past seven games overall, and 5-0 under in their past five home games. The under is 4-0 in BC's past four games against the Big Ten, 20-7 in their past 27 non-conference games, and 22-5-1 in their past 28 games overall.

Saturday - Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh (ESPNU, 12:00 p.m. ET)

                              Matchup One-Star Game

Virg Tech at Pittsburgh The Hokies are a good, but not great, team. They are 2-0 SU this season, but 0-2 ATS. Meanwhile, the Pitt Panthers have been atrocious so far, losing at home to FCS opponent Youngstown State at home, before being embarrassed on national television by Big East foe Cincinnati on the road. The 10-point spread heading into Pittsburgh looks awfully tempting, but consider that the Hokies are 0-5 ATS in their past five meetings, and 0-4 ATS in their past four trips to Pittsburgh. The underdog is also 5-0 ATS in the past five meetings. However, those past results lend little credence to anything. In fact, if anything, trends are made to be broken, and Virginia Tech is due to bounce back, right? Despite VaTech's less-than-impressive numbers against the spread lately, consider Pitt is 1-5 ATS in their past six non-conference games overall, and 2-8-1 ATS in their past 11 September contests. That makes Virginia Tech look a lot more impressive of a play.

                              Matchup Notes

UConn at Maryland looked embarrasingly bad in their opening game win, a 7-6 snoozer against FCS opponent William & Mary. Heading into a game with Temple, it looked like they were going to be whitewashed by the better team. So, of course, they proceeded to thump the Owls 36-27. Their young freshman QB Perry Hills was night-and-day better, throwing for 190 yards, two TDs and no INTs after three picks in the opener. Now, bettors have no idea what to expect. Maryland might be the most unlikely 2-0 team in the nation. Meanwhile, UConn comes in looking to get revenge against their former coach, Randy Edsall. They're also suffering from a sour taste in their mouths after dropping a 10-7 decision to N.C. State last weekend at home. The Huskies will be fighting mad, and that might make them a nice play, especially if you can get them at three points or less. The Terps are 0-7 ATS in their past seven home games, and 1-8 ATS in their past nine games overall.

                                VI Top 25 Ranking

                                Sept. 10, 2012

In this week's rankings, our top seven teams remain in their same spots, but No. 8 Arkansas and No. 11 Wisconsin nearly slide out of the Top 20 after gut-wrenching defeats. Although Virginia Tech and Michigan prevailed, both dropped significantly.
Our biggest climbers included Ohio State and Florida, while Nebraska and Oklahoma State were sent packing. The Cornhuskers and Cowboys both lost on the road to Pac-12 squads UCLA and Arizona, both of whom are now clearly on our radar with momentum under new head coaches Jim Mora Jr. and Rich Rodriguez, respectively. Both were intriguing hires and both are out to flying starts.

BYU makes its debut at No. 22 and the team ahead of the Cougars, Kansas State, is one we're watching closely. We also had Cincinnati catch our attention and should note that Missouri and Texas A&M, even in defeat, looked every bit the part of teams that'll be just fine in the SEC.

Trailing by eight in the third quarter at Missouri, we saw Georgia display plenty of grit thanks to stellar efforts from All-American LB Jarvis Jones and QB Aaron Murray. The Dawgs now face FAU before playing their five other SEC East foes in a span of six weeks. With Arkansas losing and its QB Tyler Wilson's health in doubt, we'll find out if Alabama gets too overconfident and complacent when it ventures into Fayetteville. LSU flexed more muscle in Week 2 with its 41-3 demolishment of Washington, and the Tigers appear poised to cruise to a 5-0 record before an Oct. 6 trip to Gainesville when the Gators will have an open date to prepare for Les Miles's bunch.
