That is the way you and the rest of Celtic nation feel and rightfully so, but Minny had to get rid of Garnett because they were going nowhere with him and the cap space meant EVERYTHING to them.
It may not have gotten the Celtics anything in the last 20 yrs but not every team mismanages their cap space the way the Knicks and Celtics have.
3J, The last 6-7 years we have had Vin Baker hanging on our salary cap for way over 10 million and then Ratliff for way over 10 million. We finally cleared both of those contracts that gave us absolutley nothing on the court and replaced them with KG. We have been capped out forever but at least the players we are paying are going to produce something.

That was exactly my point in post #67. I think perhaps you are missing my point. Many people seem to think this trade was terribly one sided. I do think the Celtics got the far better end but Minnesota got what they needed- cap relief, and picked up two very promising young players. Neither will be HOF like KG but what was McHale supposed to do...hang onto Garnett for two more years? He f-ed himself by not trading him on draft night and backed himself into a corner.
People (not you) tend to evaluate NBA trades on a talent for talent level but it goes far beyond that.
Now, if I was a Minny fan, I would have ZERO confidence in McHale using his cap flexibility wisely. He'll probably give Blount an extension like the Celtics did to burn space! Maybe he would take Marbury back?

I hope this makes sense.
I hear ya' but my point is simple too. If Boston kept those contracts and tried to use the money next year, would they have been able to land a KG to go with a year older Pierce & Allen. This is just as good as clearing that space now and signing a Blockbuster. I don't care how much money Minnesota has, it has been proven players won't go there if they don't think they can win. Just like with Boston ...

I agree with you...both teams did what they needed to do. This fan base was not going to tolerate another 'rebuilding' year, attendance was too low and they could not afford to set themselves back by firing Ainge and Rivers, which was where this season was heading, imo. They went out and got a HOF'er! That is huge!
Who knows...maybe McHale pulls a page out of the Bulls and Magic and goes with youth. That would be the smart thing to do but only time will tell.
