  • Baseball Question for debate

I thought that this question would be fun and could spark some good chats about baseball....
Here we go "Who would you consider the greatest or best player for your favorite NL team and your favorite AL Team?" For example if your team is the Red Sox, some would say Ted Williams others might say Carl Yaz? You get the idea.
If you want to add more teams feel free...sorry if this is in the wrond forum...

    I will start...

Angels - This one is hard, because the Angels have rich history of signing free agents that are in the middle their prime or past it...a la Reggie Jackson, Dave Parker, Fred Lynn, Rod Carew, Rick Burleson, Joe Rudi...the list goes on some of the home grown prospects include Garrett Anderson, Tim Salmon, and Brian Downing.
I would say the all-time greatest Angel is Nolan Ryan. (I know he came over from the Mets)

Giants - The Say Hey Kid gets the nod here hands down. Bonds might finish with better numbers, but Willie Mays will always be the best.

Tigers - Al Kaline gets my vote

    Twins - Kirby Puckett

    Yanks - Babe Ruth

    Mets - Tom Seaver

    Reds - Pete Rose

    That's enough for now...

    Chicago Cubs - Kerry Wood

My first reponse as a longtime Red Sox fan from the early fifties would be Ted Williams.
When I stop and think about it, reflect on how much he has contributed especially in key situations and having seen Sox win a WS with him an integral part, I think I would also give David Ortiz strong consideration and perhaps Manny Ramirez.
My only conern about putting Oritz ahead of Williams is that his overall batting average doesn't come close to that of Williams.
I would also give Nomar honorable mention.

As a Met fan Seaver is the greatest pitcher. It's sad that Doc Gooden could have been the one of the greatest pitchers EVER in baseball but was consumed with drugs.

Keith Hernandez was the Mets greatest everyday player.

I agree with your choices for the Giants and Yanks. Both of those teams have such rich history the list could be very long.

I think the jury is still out on Ortiz. Don't get me wrong. Ortiz has been great but he's only done it for a few seasons. Williams was great his whole career. For now I don't think one could compare Ortiz with Williams.

as a sox fan who was not alive when williams played i would say the best player i have seen is probably ramirez....i know i know....he is a dog who does not hustle....but he hits with men on consistently over his career and is above .300 also.....RBI's are great, slugging %, HR's and when it counts....

I am not big on Nomar as being the best.....Ortiz's body of work is too short......

My favorite sox team would be:

              RHP - Clemens
              LHP - Hurst
Closer - Paplebon (a little premature i know)
              1b - Mo Vaughan
              2b - Mark Loretta
              ss - Nomar Garciaparra
              3b - Rico Petrocelli
              C - Pudge
LF - Manny/Yaz/Rice (can choose any)
              CF - Lynn
              RF - Evans
              DH - Papi
              PH - Bernie Carbo

Alan Trammell had to have been the best player I ever saw play in Detroit.......Obviously hes not the greatest Tiger ever which is prolly Kaline or Cobb.

I know some might disagree with me on this but one of my favorite players of all time and someone who I think is the best 2B in history is Robbie Alomar. The man was a WIZARD with the glove and the bat and he did it for so long 10-12 years nobody was even close to him both ways.

Also it makes me mad when people say Manny dogs it......the man could have a case that he is the greatest right handed hitter of all time (at least of this generation) and that just isnt possible by dogging it..........sure he stinks in the field but thats not being questioned.

Pudge Rodriguez in his prime was quite the complete player but for some reason I think he is tainted by steroids and I just dont care for him as much as I did.

Also 2 players who I love today are Jose Reyes and Alfonso Soriano.........I dont think either of these two get the respect and love they deserve (maybe a lack of views ).

I dont know how I went from best of all time to Soriano and Reyes but I love what they bring nonetheless

                    PEACE

Roberto Alomar was a great ball player but IMO a piece of shit. Any player that spits in the face of an ump should be banned from baseball.

                        Pimp-

I agree with what you say for the most part....but i assure you that Manny dogs it when he either pops up or hits a grounder.....He has even been benched for it.....I have gone to see him probably 25-50 times over the last 5 years at Fenway and away and i do not dispute his greatness, but he does on occasion "not hustle"....I think you still can be a great hitter and dog it.....because i do not think one has to do with the other......I would love for him to hustle every ground ball out of course like Jeter or Eckstein.....But his talent is immense and i would rather have his talent and his non-chalantness every now and then than to have a guy like Eckstein who is blood and guts every play.....But do not kid yourself...Manny does dog it.....There are sometimes i think he does not know he is alive...ha ha....But before i used to get mad at him for apparently not caring and laughing and stuff....but the longer i see him the more i think it works to his advantage......he never carries a bad play or at bat with him, like so many others do....He just moves on....

I can't argue, but don't forget either that I wasn't around for a good part of Williams's career and saw him play with some pretty bad teams.
If I am judging them over an entire career, thats one thing, but it is different to base an opinion on what I have personally seen with my own eyes, and I suppose simply because Sox won a WS with Ortiz has to influence my thinking.
I agree upon further review that all things considered that it is absurd of me at this point to say the name of Ortiz with Ted Williams in the same breath.
