          • Harden, Westbrook power Rockets to eighth straight win
            November 19, 2019
            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden scored 36 points, Russell Westbrook had 28 points and a triple-double, and the Houston Rockets coasted to their eighth straight win, 132-108 over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.

Westbrook had 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his third triple-double of the season and the 141st of his career after sitting out to rest in Houston's last game on Saturday night.

The Rockets led by double digits for most of this one on a night they got starters Clint Capela and Danuel House back after both players had missed time with injuries.

Capela added a season-high 22 points and had 20 rebounds to become the first Rocket to have at least 20 rebounds in four straight games since Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes in 1971.

CJ McCollum led the Trail Blazers with 25 points in a game where Damian Lillard shot just 4 of 15 and had 13 points.

            MAVERICKS 117, SPURS 110

DALLAS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored a career-high 42 points in his sixth triple-double of the young NBA season and Dallas sent San Antonio to its sixth straight loss.

The 20-year-old second-year player leads the NBA in triple-doubles after finishing with 11 rebounds and 12 assists to go with the biggest shot of the game, a 3-pointer with 26.5 seconds to play that put the Mavericks up 115-110. Doncic joined LeBron James as the only players in NBA history younger than 21 to have a 40-point triple-double.

Dorian Finney-Smith added a career-best 22 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Dallas.

San Antonio has lost eight of nine and is off to its worst start since 1996-97, the season before it drafted former star and current assistant coach Tim Duncan.

            CELTICS 99, SUNS 85

PHOENIX (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 26 points, Kemba Walker added 19 and Boston beat Phoenix.

Boston (11-2) had a 10-game winning streak snapped Sunday by the Sacramento Kings but bounced back with a relatively easy road victory. The Celtics led by 15 at halftime and never had their lead cut to less than nine in the second half.

Tatum shot 8 of 16 from the field and added 11 rebounds. Marcus Smart scored 17 points but left early in the fourth quarter because of a sprained right ankle.

Phoenix (7-5) was playing without starting point guard Ricky Rubio, who was out because of back spasms. Devin Booker led the Suns with 20 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. added 15.

            BUCKS 115, BULLS 101

CHICAGO (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 10 rebounds, and Milwaukee beat Chicago for its fourth straight victory.

Brook Lopez added 19 points and 10 rebounds as Milwaukee won for the eighth time in nine games. The Bucks also beat the Bulls 124-115 on Thursday in Milwaukee.

Antetokounmpo was 13 for 22 in his 13th consecutive double-double to begin the season. It's the longest active streak in the NBA.

Daniel Gafford led Chicago with 21 points in his return from the G League. Coby White had 13, and Ryan Arcidiacono finished with 12.

            TIMBERWOLVES 112, JAZZ 102

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns had seven 3-pointers and 29 points, and Minnesota handed Utah its first home loss.

Without second-leading scorer Andrew Wiggins, the Timberwolves held the Jazz to 36.8% shooting and were bolstered by Jeff Teague's 21 points and 11 assists.

Kelan Martin had seven of his 14 points in Minnesota's decisive run in the fourth quarter, and Robert Covington added 15 points.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 18 points before fouling out and Donovan Mitchell had 17 points on 5-for-24 shooting for Utah.

            RAPTORS 132, HORNETS 96

TORONTO (AP) - OG Anunoby scored a career-high 24 points before being poked in the right eye for the second time in four games, Pascal Siakam had 20 points and Toronto routed Charlotte.

Norman Powell scored 17 points, rookie Terence Davis got all of his career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson added 15 as the Raptors posted their biggest margin of victory of the season and remained unbeaten in five home games. They also ended a two-game skid against the Hornets.

Marvin Williams scored 14 points, Bismack Biyombo and Miles Bridges each had 13, and Devonte' Graham 11 as Charlotte allowed its highest point total of the season and lost for the fifth time in seven games.

            PACERS 115, NETS 86

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Holiday had career highs with 24 points and 13 assists, Domantas Sabonis added 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, and Indiana cruised over Brooklyn.

Justin Holiday chipped in 20 points while T.J. Warren added 19 for the Pacers, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 28 points and Jarrett Allen finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Nets, who played without Kyrie Irving for a second straight game and were held to their lowest point total of the season.

            KNICKS 123, CAVALIERS 105

NEW YORK (AP) - Julius Randle scored 30 points, Marcus Morris Sr. added 23 and New York beat Cleveland.

R.J. Barrett added 15 points and Damyean Dotson had 11 for New York.

Kevin Porter Jr. led Cleveland with 18 points. Collin Sexton and Alfonzo McKinnie each had 14.

              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Some of this weekend’s interesting college football games:

                — Michigan (-8.5) @ Indiana

                — Kansas State @ Texas Tech (-2.5)

                — Duke @ Wake Forest (-7)

                — Oklahoma State (-7) @ West Virginia

                — UCLA @ USC (-13.5)

                — California @ Stanford (-3)

                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                13) Quarterbacks taken in first round of 2017 NFL Draft:
                pick #2— Mitch Trubisky, Bears
                #10— Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
                #12— Deshaun Watson, Texans

                12) Not to beat a dead horse, but Chicago traded up to get from the 3rd pick to the 2nd pick; here is what they gave San Francisco to get the #2 pick:
                — #3 pick in 1st round of 2017 draft.
                — 3rd and 4th round picks in 2017 draft.
                — 3rd round pick in 2018 draft.

                11) Chiefs 24, Chargers 17:
                — Chargers outgained KC 312-109 in first half, but trailed 10-9 at halftime.
                — Chargers scored only 13 points on four red zone trips.
                — Rivers threw seven INT’s in last two games; maybe it wasn’t Ken Whisenhunt’s fault.

                10) In their last four games, New England has won field position by 13-11-15-14 yards; because they win the turnover battle and have better special teams, they play on a shorter field than their opponents do.

In their last six games, Patriots outscored opponents 69-26 in the 2nd half, giving up 20 of those 26 points in their 37-20 loss at Baltimore.

                9) Kentucky 82, Utah Valley 74— Wildcats are struggling with their defense early on. Luckily in this game, they outscored Utah Valley 31-11 on foul line- they made only 1-12 on the arc.

                8) SMU 59, Evansville 57— Last week the Purple Aces beat Kentucky as a 25-point underdog; they lost this game at home to SMU.

                7) Dallas 117, San Antonio 110— Spurs are 5-9; they lost their last six games, and 8 of last 9.

                6) Houston 132, Portland 108— Rockets won/covered their last eight games.

                5) Clippers 90, Thunder 88— Kawhi Leonard missed his 3rd straight game, his fifth game this season; he played in 69 of 182 games the last two seasons, but led Toronto to an NBA title LY.

Clippers owe Leonard $103,147,300 over the next three seasons.

Paul George scored 18 points in 29:00 against his old team.

                4) The Disney+ app had over 10 million signups in its first week; I’m not big on animated movies, so doubtful I’ll get it, but they’re making a lot of money with it.

                3) A Maryland high school teacher is facing assault charges following a fight with a 17-year-old student that was caught on camera; both combatants are females.

                2) When Cleveland Cavaliers played the Knicks last nite, they were the last team NBA this year to play on consecutive nights; Nashville Predators are only NHL team that hasn’t played games on back/back nights yet this season.

                1) In case you were wondering, the last NFL team that didn’t punt in consecutive games were the 2004 Steelers, who did it in Weeks 15-16 that year, in wins the Giants/Ravens. ’04 Steelers went 15-1, but lost the AFC title game.

                        Rockets Lift Off Smoothly

Adding Russell Westbrook to the mix hasn’t forced the Rockets to spontaneously combust.

We haven’t seen James Harden wrestle the ball out of Westbrook’s hands in order to dribble 20 seconds before throwing up a fadeaway 30-footer.

Monday night’s 132-108 rout of the Trail Blazers extended Houston’s league-high eight-game winning streak, the second-longest run we’ve seen over the first month behind Boston’s 10-gamer that ended in Sacramento over the weekend. Starters Clint Capela and Danuel House returned from injuries and combined for 33 points and 26 boards in taking down Portland and were obviously missed after being out for multiple games.

Despite their absences and a Westbrook load maintenance game, Houston just rode Harden past the Timberwolves and Pacers to extend a run that began on the second night of a back-to-back in Memphis following a 29-point loss in Miami. The Rockets have covered seven of eight during their winning streak, winning by at least six points each time out. Among West teams, only Denver has a better road record. They entered Tuesday’s action even with the Lakers and Celtics with an NBA-high 11 wins.

Oddsmakers who set Houston’s win total at a Western Conference-best 54.5 games are looking really good at the moment since that was prime fade material given the reservations over how effective the Westbrook-Harden partnership could actually be. Mike D’Antoni helped put Westbrook at ease by telling him to push tempo and has allowed Harden to do what he does in running the offense. The Rockets are a perfect 8-0 against West foes and are going to have an opportunity to make a major statement in road games against the Nuggets and Clippers this week.

Houston is going to be an underdog in both games and has been in that position only once this season, blowing out the Timberwolves at Target Center by 20 while getting a bucket. Minnesota was without typical starting wings Andrew Wiggins and Josh Okogie while the Rockets were down every starter but Harden and P.J. Tucker with Westbrook resting. Capela and House were still out while sixth man Eric Gordon is going to be out until at least late December due to a knee issue.

Harden scored 49 points and got contributions from Austin Rivers, Ben McLemore, Chris Clemons and Isaiah Hartenstein to take down the T’Wolves. Only the die-hards would know those last two names. Skeptics would tell you it took Harden 41 shots to fall one shy of scoring but he ended up a plus-16 and drained eight 3-pointers. Clemons, a former NCAA scoring champ at Campbell who most scouts felt would be too small to be effective at the NBA level hit five 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 19.

Thus far, the Rockets have lived a charmed life. There have been bumps, but they’ve navigated them nicely. Harden has led the team in scoring in every game except the season-opening loss to the Bucks. After this week, we’ll have a better idea about whether they should indeed be included with the Lakers, Clippers and Nuggets as the Western Conference favorites. Homecourt advantage can’t be locked up in November, but it can be significantly impacted one way or the other.

Harden may be flirting with a 40 points-per-game average by the time this month is over and a telling stretch of games is behind them. His Rockets have won 10 of 11 against Denver but lost in their last visit to Pepsi Center. They'll head to L.A. for the game all eyes will be on Friday night. Houston returns home to face the upstart Mavericks on Sunday and will host the Heat and Hawks after that. It will only play twice in December’s first six days, visiting San Antonio and Toronto.

Without Gordon, they’ll be attempting to develop some depth that may serve them well down the road. Ultimately, these tough tests will help decipher whether Harden and Westbrook can thrive as a combination, which is one reason why it would be fantastic if the Clippers played Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in tandem when the teams get together on Friday night at Staples. Let the four L.A. natives go at it.

Harden and Westbrook always pack a little extra for games in their hometown. This first trip into the city as a tandem will be telling.

                        What's going on with?

                        The Jazz

Center Rudy Gobert asked for the ball more last week in a move that may have gone under the radar nationally but has major ramifications if he’s successful in getting his way. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year is looking to become a more well-rounded player and remains a work-in-progress on the offensive side of the ball, but he’s looking for more in-game reps to try and get to where he’s a legitimate threat down come playoffs.

The Athletic Jazz beat writer Tony Jones joined me on the Bet and Collect Podcast to talk about the demand for more touches in addition to Mike Conley’s adjustment period and all things Jazz, so give it a listen for an in-depth view. With Conley and Bojan Bogdanovic coming on board, Utah is a team to keep a close eye on since it is carving out an identity while looking to join that top tier of Western Conference teams looking to rise up with the Warriors’ reign now over.

Gobert enjoyed a three-game stretch between Nov. 11-15 where he made 28 of 33 shots, averaging 22 points, 15.3 rebounds and three blocks, clearly looking more active than he had earlier in the season when getting the newcomers acclimated took precedence. Donovan Mitchell will be Utah’s closer and Joe Ingles will remain hugely influential in his new sixth man role, but Gobert has to be the driving force since his impact on defense is so substantial. This is the year he needs to make his first All-Star appearance. It should be a slam dunk. If he manages to accomplish that, the Jazz are going to be in the mix of elite West teams. They’ll look for revenge Wednesday against the Timberwolves, who spoiled their perfect start at home on Monday night, prior to a weekend back-to-back against the Warriors and Pelicans that may feature them as a double-digit favorite on both nights.

                        Paul George
After scoring 70 points in 44 minutes to key a pair of blowout wins against the high-scoring Pelicans and Hawks, George knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer to help defeat OKC on Monday night in a competitive, low-scoring game. In playing 29 minutes, he appears to be back to normal.

It's time to see what he and Leonard look like. A sore knee and the maintenance program the team has in mind for the reigning Finals MVP has kept us from seeing them play together, but that wait could end Wednesday against the Celtics.

Patrick Beverley returned from a hip injury on Monday and contributed to holding off the Thunder, so outside of shooter Landry Shamet being out with an ankle sprain, we're finally going to get to see what the current NBA title co-favorite truly looks like. The Clips are going out on the road for nine of 11 after the week's home games against the Celtics, Rockets and Pelicans, so we're not going to see George and Leonard in tandem often since there's travel and three back-to-backs in there, but the unveiling of this experiment placing a pair of elite two-way wings together appears to have finally arrived.

                        Carmelo Anthony
He'll wear 00 in Portland, so get ready for jokes about how 'Melo chose a number to match his impact. Due to all of the team's attrition up front, I think Anthony has a legitimate chance to guarantee his contract by remaining on the roster past Jan. 10

Anthony signed a non-guaranteed make-good deal, passed his physical and will now look to find a rhythm after not appearing in a game in over a calendar year. Due to Zach Collins undergoing shoulder surgery and Jusuf Nurkic remaining sidelined, Terry Stotts has been filling the hole at a position that had been adequately filled by Al-Farouq Aminu the past few years with shooter Anthony Tolliver, Skal Labissiere and Mario Hezonja playing out of position. If Anthony has any juice let, he should carve out a spot in the rotation. Considering he signed a non-guaranteed deal and truly felt the sting of not being offered a gig over the past few months, I think we'll see Anthony do whatever it takes to play his role. If he's physically still able to, he should stick. That remains to be seen and can't be proven via Instagram videos.

                        Injuries to Monitor

Marcus Smart injured an ankle, so a Celtics team already toiling without Gordon Hayward and thriving via a small ball approach that relies on Smart's tenacity and defense could be greatly affected... Orlando forward Jonathan Isaac has emerged as one of the NBA's top defenders this season but hurt an ankle at a team function. He's hoping to return by week's end... Andrew Wiggins has been on bereavement leave and missed Monday's win in Salt Lake City, but he's due back to try and continue what has thus far been an excellent start... Kevin Love is dealing with a back issue that kept him out Monday, so his status is in doubt. Larry Nance, Jr. also missed a loss to the Knicks with a thumb injury but his return is imminent... The Heat hope to have Justise Winslow back from a concussion and Goran Dragic in the mix after an illness to take advantage of their excellent depth... Raptors PG Kyle Lowry is still not ready to return from his thumb issue...Brandon Ingram is working out pre-game to loosen up a sore knee and get back out on the floor for the Pelicans, who are working short-handed with Lonzo Ball (ankle), Derrick Favors (back) and Josh Hart (leg) already sidelined.

                            DEFENSIVE STRUGGLES

The Memphis Grizzlies host an undermanned Golden State Warriors squad Tuesday night as 5.5-point favorites. Golden State has lost seven straight and are only averaging 98 points over their last three games. But it has been the defensive end of the floor that has been the biggest problem for the Dubs, where they are surrendering 119 points a contest.

However, Memphis hasn’t been much better on defense, allowing 112.6 points a game on 46.5 percent shooting. This is a good spot for Golden State's Eric Paschall who has scored no less than 15 points in three straight contests and is coming off a night where he shot 10-of-17 from the floor for 30 points. Bet Over his points total of 17.5.

                            HOT STARTS AT HOME

The New Orleans Pelicans are looking for their fourth win in their last six games as they host the Portland Trail Blazers and newest member Carmelo Anthony, who is expected to make his debut for the team tonight. The Pelicans enter this game ranked seventh in points per game with 115.7 but at the same time, surrender an average of 120.

The Pels have gotten out to quick starts at home averaging 58.1 first half points a game and should be fresh having two days off. While they meet a Blazers team on a quick turnaround after playing in Houston last night and only average 53.8 on the road this season in the first half. With fatigue playing a factor for the Blazers, take the Pelicans first half team total Over 55.5.

                            PLAYING WITH CONFIDENCE

A Pacific Division battle takes place as the Phoenix Suns travel to Sacramento to take on the Kings. Sacramento is a 2-point home favorite with the game total set at 217, as the Suns are playing the second game of a back-to-back set after losing 99-85 at home to the Celtics last night.

Although the Kings rank 27th in scoring offense, averaging 104.4 points per game, defensively they are 12th in scoring defense allowing just 108.4 a night. With momentum still on their side from their upset win versus the Blazers Nov. 12, almost upsetting the Lakers in L.A. on Nov. 15, then coming off a big 100-99 victory against the Celtics last time out, expect that success to carry over versus a tired Suns team. Take Sacramento on the moneyline.

                            LOCK-DOWN DEFENSE

The Oklahoma City Thunder have yet to win on the road posting an 0-5 record (3-2 ATS) and it won’t get any easier tonight as they find themselves as 10.5-point underdogs playing on the tail end of a back-to-back versus the Lakers.

Los Angeles is scoring an average of 110.8 points a game and have held opponents to 95.4 at home on just 40.3 percent shooting. They have also held opponents to 105 points or less in five of their last eight games, while putting up 120 or more on offense in three of their last four contests. We expect the Lakers to take care of business at home and cover as 10.5-point favorites.

                            • Blazers fall in New Orleans as Anthony has 10 in debut
                              November 20, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) Jrue Holiday had 22 points and 10 assists, Brandon Ingram added 21 points, and the New Orleans Pelicans spoiled Carmelo Anthonyâ??s Portland debut with a 115-104 victory over the Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

Anthony finished with 10 points while Portland leading scorer and four-time All-Star Damian Lillard missed his first game of the season with back spasms.

Starting at forward and playing across the street from where he led Syracuse to the 2003 NCAA championship over Kansas, Anthony scored the Blazersâ?? first points of the game on a 3-pointer from 26 feet out, but wound up missing 10 of 14 shots in what was the first game of his 17th NBA season.

J.J. Redick hit 4 of 9 3-pointers and scored 14 points for New Orleans, which has won two straight and three of four. Kenrich Williams, who got the start at forward, filled the stat sheet with hustle plays, grabbing 14 rebounds to go with three steals and a blocked shot. He also scored eight points.

                              LAKERS 112, THUNDER 107

LOS ANGELES (AP) - LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double against every team in the league, and Anthony Davis scored 34 points during the Lakersâ?? fifth straight victory.

James posted 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to boost the NBA-leading Lakers, who have won 12 of 13 after a perfect four-game homestand.

James is fifth in NBA history with 86 triple-doubles, but the four players in front of him - Oscar Robertson, Russell Westbrook, Lakers great Magic Johnson and Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd - hadnâ??t done it against 30 different teams.

Dennis Schröder scored 20 of his season-high 31 points in a phenomenal first half for the Thunder, who have lost four of five despite two solid performances at Staples Center. Danilo Gallinari added 25 points in his former home arena, and Nerlens Noel had 15.

                              WARRIORS 114, GRIZZLIES 95

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Alec Burks scored a season-high 29 points, Glenn Robinson III added 20 and Golden State snapped a seven-game losing streak with a victory over Memphis.

Marquese Chriss and Eric Paschall added 17 points apiece for the Warriors. Draymond Green was just short of his 24th career triple-double with eight points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

Rookie Ja Morant scored 20 points for Memphis, while Dillon Brooks finished with 18. Brandon Clarke added 17 and Jae Crowder had 15 points along with 11 rebounds as Memphis lost its second straight.

                              KINGS 120, SUNS 116

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Bogdan Bogdanovic set career highs with 31 points and seven 3-pointers, and Sacramento beat Phoenix.

Richaun Holmes had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Nemanja Bjelica scored 17 points and Harrison Barnes added 15 for Sacramento. The Kings have won four of five.

Devin Booker had 30 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Phoenix. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Mikal Bridges scored 20 points apiece.

Bogdanovic shot 11 of 14 overall and was 7 of 9 beyond the arc. He made four 3s and had 14 of Sacramentoâ??s 16 points during one stretch in the second quarter, then made three more from the perimeter in the fourth to help the Kings hold on.
