      Building off career high numbers

The Magic's Nikola Vucevic is having a fantastic season shooting the ball at 52 percent from the field, 37.8 percent from beyond the arc, and posting career-high totals in points per game with 20.6, and rebounds averaging 12 a game.

He’s in a favorable spot to improve on those totals versus a Nets team giving up 24.9 points on 52.1 percent shooting and 17.6 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Look for Vucevic to thrive and back Over in his points, rebounds, assists at 40.5.

      Slow starters

The Hornets are coming off a comeback victory versus Memphis last night and host a Bulls team that has struggled, winning only 12 games.

The Bulls are the lowest-scoring first half team in the Association, averaging only 48.9 points per opening half away from home. The Hornets rank exactly in the middle of the pack in first-half scoring, averaging 56, but that number should be lower today as they’re playing on the tail end of a back-to-back. With neither team will shoot the ball well early on, so take the first-half total Under 106.

      Backing the more consistent option

The Nuggets are fresh off a 136-122 victory versus the Rockets last night. This was their best offensive performance in weeks and marked their fifth straight victory. Denver travels to Minnesota today to take on the Timberwolves, who are coming off a 99-97 win versus the Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

The Nuggets have won 17 of their last 23 games when playing on the road against Minnesota and have covered the spread in eight of the last nine. Denver has won two of the last three head-to-head matchups with Minnesota and come in with a lot of momentum, winning five straight. Back the Nuggets on the moneyline -102.

Finding offense out of their big

The Hawks and Suns are a combined 27-77. Both teams are currently on losing streaks, with the Hawks losing two straight and the Suns dropping nine in a row.

Atlanta big man Dewayne Dedmon is in a favorable spot versus a Suns defense surrendering 26.5 points per game on 54.8 percent shooting as well as 16.6 rebounds to opposing centers. He’s coming off a game where he shot 5 of 9 from the field and connected on three shots from beyond the arc. In what should be a high-scoring game, back Over Dedmon's points, rebounds, assists total of 20.5.

      Lighting it up from deep

The Kings are averaging 113.9 points per game on their home court and are fresh off a blowout 135-113 win against the Hawks. They’re up against a 76ers team averaging 112.2 points for and surrendering 114.8 points against away from home.

Sacramento's Buddy Hield will have a big game versus a Sixers defense allowing 23.6 points and 2.9 made 3-point shots per game to opposing shooting guards. With Hield firing at 45.8 percent from beyond the arc and connecting on no less than two from deep over the past 10 outings, back the Over with his point total of 20.5.

        • Antetokounmpo helps Bucks rout Wizards
          February 2, 2019
          By The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Klay Thompson returned from a one-game absence with an illness to score 28 points and light up the Lakers for the second time in 13 days, leading the Golden State Warriors to a 115-101 victory Saturday night over a Los Angeles team again missing LeBron James.

Splash Brother Stephen Curry missed his first eight shots before a layup with 6:20 remaining and still wound up with 14 points, two days after going off for 41 in a loss to the 76ers when he hit 10 3-pointers. Andre Iguodala hit a go-ahead 3 in the final minute of the third, and two more early in the fourth as Golden State pulled away and finished with 17 points. DeMarcus Cousins had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his second home game and seventh in all since coming back from a nearly yearlong recovery from surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon. Kevin Durant added 21 points and 11 of the Warriors' 31 assists.

The Lakers hung tough without James just as they did here in a 127-101 victory Christmas night. They lost James in the third quarter of that game to a strained left groin. He returned from a 17-game absence Thursday night against the Clippers only to sit again Saturday.

James' rest was for what coach Luke Walton called ''load management.'' The four-time MVP had been set for his second game back but woke up Friday ''very sore'' after playing 40 minutes in the 123-120 overtime win against the Clippers. He finished with 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.

          SPURS 113, PELICANS 108

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 25 points and 14 rebounds and San Antonio withstood another bat intrusion - with a nifty play from the team's coyote mascot - and held off the depleted New Orleans.

The bat began hovering above the court three minutes into the game, causing officials to delay play. It was the second straight home game delayed by the winged intruders, with three bats buzzing the court Thursday night against Brooklyn.

An arena official walked onto the court with a net, but missed the bat on his first attempt. Almost on cue, the mascot charged onto the court dressed in a Batman costume with a net. He missed his first swipe at the bat, then dove near the scorer's table and caught the bat in his net to huge cheers from Spurs players and fans. The worker placed the bat into a towel and took him from the court, with play resuming after a delay of only 1 1/2 minutes.

Rudy Gay and Marco Belinelli added 17 points each for San Antonio.

Frank Jackson had a career-high 25 points to lead New Orleans.

          ROCKETS 125, JAZZ 98

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - James Harden had 43 points for his 26th straight game with at least 30 points in Houston's victory over Utah.

Harden's 30-point streak is the third-longest in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain's runs of 65 and 31 games. Harden also had 12 rebounds, six steals, five assists and four blocks. He was 12 of 22 from the field, making 4 of 12 3-pointers, and made all 15 of his free throws.

Gerald Green added 25 points, and Kenneth Faried had 16 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 5:07 remaining. Houston snapped a two-game losing streak, holding the Jazz to 36 percent shooting and forcing 23 turnovers. Donovan Mitchell had 26 points and nine assists for Utah.

          BUCKS 131, WIZARDS 115

WASHINGTON (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 37 points, making all of his season-high 17 free throws in a perfect night at the line for Milwaukee, and had 10 rebounds to help the NBA-leading Bucks rout Washington.

Two games ahead of Toronto for the Eastern Conference lead, the Bucks have won three straight, nine of 10 and 20 of 24.

Brook Lopez added 21 points, and Khris Middleton had 20. Starting point guard Eric Bledsoe sat out to rest a sore left Achilles.

The Bucks were 24 of 24 from the free-throw line. They had a 17-2 run late in the second quarter, led by 23 at halftime and 32 early in third quarter. Antetokounmpo scored seven of the last 10 points in big second-quarter run, including a thunderous slam over Jeff Green that led to a three-point play.

Bradley Beal scored 24 points for Washington.

          NUGGETS 107, TIMBERWOLVES 106

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nikola Jokic had his 25th career triple-double with 13 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists, including a late full-court pass that set up a key basket to help Denver beat Minnesota.

The Nuggets won their sixth straight game, and added another accolade by ensuring that coach Mike Malone will head to the All-Star game with Jokic by virtue of their NBA franchise-best 37-15 start.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 31 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for Minnesota.

          MAVERICKS 111, CAVALIERS 98

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Luka Doncic matched his season high with 35 points and did a little bit of everything for Dallas, and Harrison Barnes scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the undermanned Mavericks past Cleveland.

With a contingent of fans waving Slovenian flags to support Doncic, the 19-year-old showed why the Mavericks are so excited about their future. He added 11 rebounds, six assists and made a couple long 3-pointers that drew gasps from the Quicken Loans crowd.

Barnes finished with 17 points. The Mavericks played their second game since acquiring star Kristaps Porzingis from New York in a blockbuster trade. Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee and Trey Burke also came in the deal, but are not eligible to play until their physicals are completed.

Jordan Clarkson scored 19 points for Cleveland.

          CLIPPERS 111, PISTONS 101

DETROIT (AP) - Lou Williams scored 16 Los Angeles points in a row during a torrid fourth-quarter stretch, and the Clippers overcame a 25-point deficit to beat Detroit.

The Clippers trailed by 25 in the second quarter and were down 83-60 in the third before storming back to tie it 89 in the fourth. It was 91-all before Williams scored every Los Angeles point during a decisive run that put the Clippers up 107-96.

Williams finished with 39 points. Detroit's Blake Griffin had 24 points and 11 rebounds against his former team, and Reggie Jackson added 29 points for the Pistons.

          KINGS 115, 76ERS 108

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 34 points and set a career high for 3-pointers with seven, and Sacramento weathered a fourth-quarter flurry from Jimmy Butler to beat Philadelphia.

Sacramento (27-25) matched its win total from last season. De'Aaron Fox had 19 points and eight assists, Willie Cauley-Stein also scored 19 points.

Joel Embiid had 29 points and 17 rebounds for Philadelphia. Butler added 29 points, 18 coming in the fourth quarter when he made two four-point plays.

          PACERS 95, HEAT 88

MIAMI (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 31 points, Darren Collison added 20 and Indiana had a big third quarter to beat stumbling Miami.

Indiana ended a season-long four-game losing streak, which started in the game immediately following the one where All-Star Victor Oladipo left with a season-ending knee injury.

Dwyane Wade scored 21 points for Miami.

          HORNETS 125, BULLS 118

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker had 15 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter and the Charlotte Hornets pulled away to beat Chicago for its fifth straight victory.

Walker had 10 assists and finished 5 of 6 from the field in the fourth quarter, sparking an 18-4 run to hand the Bulls their fifth loss in six games.

Bobby Portis led Chicago with 33 points, and Lauri Markkanen had 30.

          HAWKS 118, SUNS 112

PHOENIX (AP) - John Collins matched his career high with 35 points and fell one shy of his career best with 16 rebounds, and Atlanta handed Phoenix its 10th straight loss.

Trae Young scored 17 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter.

Devin Booker scored 32 points for Phoenix.

          MAGIC 102, NETS 89

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Evan Fournier added 16 points and Orlando beat Brooklyn.

D'Angelo Russell had 23 points for Brooklyn, and Shabazz Napier added 15.

              — Butler 70, Seton Hall 68— Coaches were miked whole game, so they obviously toned their language down. Shots inside locker room at halftime were interesting.

FS1 got their money’s worth; Butler led 65-48 with 6:30 left, but Pirates tied game with under a minute left. Butler won on a goaltending call with 0:17 left. Game was over at 1:53; not having commercials made broadcast shorter, but why have TV timeouts if TV isn’t using them?

              12) 2-4pm:
              — North Carolina 79, Louisville 69— Tar Heels avenged a 21-home loss to Louisville.
              — Siena 56, Iona 54— Gaels lost three straight MAAC games for first time in six years.
              — Kent State 81, Ball State 80 OT— Kid on Kent got stuck with ball outside arc at top of key, threw a pass to himself off the backboard and scored game-winning hoop with 0:02.7 left.
              — Campbell 83, Longwood 62— 5-foot-9 Chris Clemons scored 39 for the Camels.

              11) 4-6 pm:
              — Kentucky 65, Florida 54— Gators are 4-5 in last nine games; they’re a bubble team.
              — Washington 69, UCLA 55— Bruins had 18 turnovers, 23 points in first half. Not good.
              — Mississippi State 81, Ole Miss 75— Bulldogs avenge their home loss to Ole Miss.

              10) 6-8 pm:
              — Indiana 79, Michigan State 75, OT— Hoosiers end a 7-game losing streak.
              — Arkansas 90, LSU 89— First conference loss for the Bayou Bengals.
              — Tex-Arlington 84, Texas State 77, 2OT— Bobcats fall out of tie for first in Sun Belt.

              9) 8-10 pm:
              — Baylor 90, TCU 64— Makai Mason scored 40 points, was 9-12 behind arc.
              — Tennessee 93, Texas A&M 76— Vols haven’t lost since Nov 23 to Kansas in Brooklyn.
              — Tex-San Antonio 116, Marshall 106, OT— Visiting Roadrunners outscored Marshall 28-9 on foul line. In a 5:00 OT, UTSA won 24-14.

              8) 10-midnight:
              — Colorado 73, Oregon 51— Buffs led this game 40-17 at halftime.
              — Cal-Irvine 82, Long Beach State 80— Anteaters won seven of last eight games; four of those wins were by 2 points or in OT.
              — Northridge 83, Cal Poly 65— Matadors start three frosh and a soph; they’re 4-3 in Big West. Mark Gottfried will have them near top of this league in next couple years.

              7) Upsets of the Day:
              — Indiana (+14.5) 79, Michigan State 75
              — Middle Tennessee (+11.5) 79, UAB 78
              — Tex-Arlington (+9) 84, Texas State 77, 2OT
              — Arkansas (+8.5) 90, LSU 89
              — LaSalle (+6.5) 66, Richmond 58
              — Siena (+6) 56, Iona 54
              — Austin Peay (+6) 79, Jacksonville State 71

              6) Makai Mason’s story is pretty amazing; it deserves to be re-told.

Three years ago, as a sophomore at Yale, Mason scored 31 points as Ivy League champ Yale upset Baylor 79-75 in the NCAA tournament. Looked like he would lead the Bulldogs to one or two more Ivy titles, but injuries ruined his next two seasons, playing in only one game.

Ivy League teams don’t have redshirt years, so if Mason wanted to play his 5th year of college ball, he had to transfer, and ironically, he chose Baylor, where now that he is healthy, he is leading the Bears to a surprisingly good season.

Mason scored 40 Saturday night and looked a little like Steph Curry doing it, making 9-12 on the arc. Tremendous exhibition of shooting.

              5) Don’t listen to all the hype from recruiting services; they don’t know everything.

Ed Reed was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday night; as a kid, he was a 2-star recruit out of Destrehan, LA. 2-star recruits don’t often make the NFL, much less the Hall of Fame, but Reed excelled at Miami, was a 1st-round pick of the Ravens, and the rest is history.

Reed was such a talented athlete that for a while, he was Destrehan HS’s punter, when one of his teammates was Mike Scifres, who went to on punt in the NFL for 14 years.

              4) Sergio Garcia was disqualified from the Saudi International golf tournament for “purposefully hitting his clubs into the surface of the greens causing damage.” There were reports than Garcia damaged as many as five greens on the course.

              3) When you know a team might not be 100% mentally in the game: New Mexico committed a lane violation when Fresno State was taking a foul shot, but Fresno didn’t have anyone in there to rebound, so the kid stepped in early to block out…….no one. Fresno made the next foul shot.

              2) Louisiana Tech is 5-6 in Conference USA; home team covered all 11 of those games.

              1) Surprising fact: Which college has had the most QB’s start a Super Bowl?
Answer: the Cal Golden Bears, with five

              — Joe Kapp, Super Bowl IV
              — Craig Morton, Super Bowls V, XII
              — Vince Ferragamo, Super Bowl XIV
              — Aaron Rodgers, Super Bowl XLV
              — Jared Goff, Super Bowl LIII

Ferragamo deserves an asterisk; he played two years at Cal, then transferred and played two years at Nebraska.

-- The Celtics are 12-0 OU (+19.08 ppg) at home with rest off a 10+ win in a road game when they won 2 straight vs current opponent and it is before the All-Star break.

OU Play UNDER Trend of the Day:

-- The Raptors are 0-11 OU (-16.45 ppg) at home after a game in which their opponent had more than 12 steals and it is before the All-Star break.

                      Immediate impact from new addition

New York’s new acquisitions in Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan and Wesley Matthews are game-time decisions, but look likely to go for Sunday’s contest as the Knicks take on the Grizzlies.

The Knicks have not been a good rebounding team this season averaging only 52.7 a game. Having a big man like Jordan, who averages 13.7 rebounds a game, join the starting lineup is a great way to limit opponents second chance opportunities.

With the Grizzlies ranking as the lowest scoring team in the Association averaging just 100.4 points per game on 45.1 percent shooting, look for quite a few rebounding opportunities for Jordan and back Over his rebounding total.

                      Rolling Thunder head to Boston

The Thunder have won seven in a row and travel to Boston to take on a Celtics team who have posted a 21-6 record on their home court this season. The Thunder have done well historically in Boston winning 11 of their recent 16 contests, including four of the last five on the road at TD Garden.

With the Thunder hitting their stride at the perfect time in the season take, grab the 3.5-points and back them as road underdogs.

                      Keeping Kyrie contained

It is no easy task guarding Kyrie Irving, however earlier in the season the Thunder held him to six of 13 shooting from the floor for only 15 points. The Thunder have done a great job limiting opposing point guards holding them to 19.3 points per game on 42.6 percent shooting.

Look for the Thunder to keep him in check today and back Under Irving's point total of 24.5.

                      Connecting from deep

Paul George has been playing exceptionally well lately, scoring at least 36 points in each of the Thunder’s last three games. He has been lighting it up from beyond the arc connecting on 10 of 16 and eight of 12 from beyond the 3-point line in two of the most recent three games.

Look for George to find success today, particularly from deep and back him to go Over his total of made 3-point shots currently set at 3.5.

                      Starting quick

The Clippers travel to Toronto to take on the Raptors as 10.5-point underdogs and might be without their top two scorers in Danilo Gallinari and Tobias Harris, both questionable with injuries. Hopefully both are healthy, as their offense will be missed if one or both are sidelined.

With the Raptors averaging over 58.2 first half points per game, and the Clippers averaging 59 away from home, look for both teams to find success early on and bet Over the first half game total of 116.5.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sullen Sunday

                              13) Patriots 13, Rams 3— New England wins its 6th Super Bowl title in a defensive struggle that was reminiscent of Super Bowls from the 70’s. Not a lot of offense.

                              12) 18 months ago, if you had told me that the Rams would lose this Super Bowl Sunday night, I would’ve suggested drug testing for you, after I thanked you for trying to cheer me up.

Sean McVay and GM Les Snead have a done a GREAT job making the Rams a prominent team; this was a disappointing end to a great season. Life goes on.

                              11) We live in a country full of frontrunners and know-it-alls; only way to silence the haters is to win all the time. But only one team carries that trophy home; everyone else is a “loser”

The Super Bowl is so hyped up that it magnifies the stuff that happens. Jared Goff’s job from this point on will be to play well, like he has for the last two years, but then when the Rams get back to the playoffs, he has to win a title, preferably in style.

The naysayers will be after him from this point on, until he shuts them up.

                              10) Sports are interesting because they’re unscripted; you can be a nerd like me and study trends and stats, but you never KNOW whats going to happen until it happens. Total for this game was 56, but it turned out to be the first Super Bowl with no TD’s in the first three quarters.

                              Go figure.

                              9) There was a 54-51 game this season and people complained about that. No defense.

Lot of people are complaining a lot about this 13-3 game. No offense.

There are lot of people who just like to complain.

                              8) Turns out I’m way behind on my pop culture knowledge; this guy Adam Levine sings at halftime of the game; he is in one of my favorite movies, Begin Again, where he played a singer, but I had no idea he actually IS a singer. Who knew? (everybody but me, apparently)

Halftimes are very long at the Super Bowl; wonder how that effects the players. It is almost like playing two separate games.

                              7) Do people actually watch commercials? I almost never do, but did a little bit during the Super Bowl because it is useless to turn the channel during the game. Not much else on.

                              6) This is what was on the ESPN family of networks at halftime of the game:

                              ESPN— Boxing
                              ESPN News— X Games
                              ESPNU— Women’s gymnastics
                              ESPN2— World Series of Poker

                              5) Alex Rodriguez was in a commercial with Mr Peanut?

                              4) Someday, people who broadcast football games on TV will realize that plays run is a more important stat than time of possession. Someday.

                              3) How much do you think it costs to open/close a retractable dome? They opened it during the National Anthem so people could see the flyover, then closed it again; that can’t be cheap.

                              2) Was looking thru Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology on ESPN.com; there are still six weeks until Selection Sunday in college basketball, but on Sunday morning, last four teams in field were: Arizona State, Florida, Indiana, Seton Hall.

                              1) On the bright side, it was over freezing in Albany Sunday and temps will be above freezing most of the week, creeping into the 50’s on Tuesday.

Spring training starts in two weeks.

Golden State over Boston - Slow start aside, the Warriors will have an easier time getting out of the West than they did last season since they won't be facing elimination at any point. The East will supply the playoff drama thanks to a Game 7 between the Raptors and Celtics up in the newly renamed Scotiabank Arena that will wind up delivering the latest playoff heartache for Canadian basketball fans. In the Finals, the Dubs will handle the Celtics to secure a three-peat and their fourth title in a five-year span.
