  • Rockets beat Warriors 118-112 without ailing Harden
    February 23, 2019
    By The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Eric Gordon scored 25 points with four 3-pointers, Chris Paul converted two free throws with 1:08 left on the way to 23, and the Houston Rockets outplayed the Golden State Warriors without ill NBA scoring leader James Harden for a 118-112 victory Saturday night.

Stephen Curry's 3 with 1:57 to play pulled the Warriors to 114-108 then his two free throws at 1:26 made it a four-point game before Houston came through at the line.

Kevin Durant scored 29 points and Curry added 25 with five 3s, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Warriors had their five-game home winning streak snapped in a matchup of West powers who met in the 2018 Western Conference finals won in seven games by Golden State.

Early in the fourth, Golden State's Draymond Green exited the game with a sprained left ankle after grabbing at his foot in clear pain from stepping on teammate DeMarcus Cousins' foot.

    PELICANS 128, LAKERS 115

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Jrue Holiday hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points while Anthony Davis watched from the bench, and New Orleans beat Los Angeles.

Former Laker Julius Randle had 24 points for the Pelicans, who looked in sync and motivated as they slowed LeBron James and the Lakers' push to qualify for the playoffs.

James had 27 points and 12 assists, and Brandon Ingram scored 29 points for Los Angeles.

    TRAIL BLAZERS 130, 76ERS 115

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jusuf Nurkic scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Damian Lillard had 17 points and Portland beat Philadelphia.

The Sixers struggled in their second game without All-Star center Joel Embiid, who is expected to miss at least a week with a sore left knee. Ben Simmons had 29 points and 10 assists and Tobias Harris scored 20.

Without Embiid, the Sixers couldn't keep up in a matchup between the fourth-place teams in each conference. The Blazers (36-23) have won three in a row, including a 22-point victory over Golden State before the All-Star break. Philadelphia (38-22) is 4-4 this month.

    KINGS 119, THUNDER 116

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 34 points, and Sacramento beat Oklahoma City.

Hield, who played college ball at the nearby University of Oklahoma, shot 12 for 22 from the field. De'Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley each added 19 points for the Kings.

Paul George, who hit the game-winner the night before in a 148-147 double-overtime win over Utah, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer against the Kings that could have forced overtime. He shot just 4 for 19 for the night.

Russell Westbrook scored 41 points for the Thunder.

    BULLS 126, CELTICS 116

CHICAGO (AP) - Zach LaVine scored a career-high 42 points, Lauri Markkanen finished with a personal-best 35 points and 15 rebounds, and Chicago got some payback for the most lopsided loss in franchise history.

LaVine surpassed his previous high of 41 points at New York on Nov. 5.

Markkanen, whose high coming in was 33 against the Knicks last season, became the fourth Chicago player in 10 years to score 20 or more in eight straight games. And the Bulls returned the favor for a 133-77 beating at the United Center in December that was also the biggest romp in the Celtics' storied history.

Kyrie Irving led Boston with 37 points and 10 assists. Al Horford scored 19, but the Celtics lost for the fourth time in six games.

    NETS 117, HORNETS 115

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - D'Angelo Russell tied a career high with 40 points and made some huge shots down the stretch, and Brooklyn picked up an important win over Charlotte.

The victory kept the Nets alone in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and gives them 2-1 edge in the series entering Friday night's game at Brooklyn.

The game ended with fans booing the officials off the court after a no-call when Kemba Walker attempted a 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer. Caris LeVert had him well defended and was credited with a blocked shot, but Hornets players threw their arms up in the air and the crowd erupted in loud chorus of boos believing there had been a foul.

Walker finished with 32 points, including 28 in the second half.

    BUCKS 140, TIMBERWOLVES 128

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Khris Middleton scored 28 points, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and NBA-leading Milwaukee pulled away for a victory over short-handed Minnesota.

The Bucks (45-14) have won 10 of 11 and 16 of 18 to move a season-high 31 games over .500. With their latest win, they surpassed last season's victory total.

Derrick Rose had 23 points for the Timberwolves, who played without Karl-Anthony Towns for the second consecutive game.

    PISTONS 119, HEAT 96

MIAMI (AP) - Ish Smith scored 22 points off the bench, Langston Galloway added 15 points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and Detroit moved into seventh place in the Eastern Conference by downing Miami.

Blake Griffin had 20 points while Galloway and Luke Kennard each scored 17 for the Pistons (28-30), who are 1 1/2 games behind Brooklyn for the No. 6 spot. Reggie Jackson added 13 points and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 14 rebounds for Detroit, which started the fourth quarter on a 25-8 run to turn a fairly close game into a rout.

Josh Richardson scored 22 for Miami, which is 0-5 at home and 5-12 overall since Jan. 12.

    PACERS 119, WIZARDS 112

WASHINGTON (AP) - Thaddeus Young scored 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, Bojan Bogdanovic added 18 and streaking Indiana held off struggling Washington.

Domantas Sabonis added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Darren Collison scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Pacers overcome 23 turnovers and sweep a second straight back-to-back set. Indiana has won eight of nine.

Bradley Beal scored 35 points for the Wizards, a night after posting a season-high 46 at Charlotte.

    JAZZ 125, MAVERICKS 109

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Ricky Rubio and Donovan Mitchell each scored 25 points to lead Utah over Dallas.

Jae Crowder chipped in 22 points off the bench and Joe Ingles added 18 for the Jazz. Rudy Gobert added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 21 points for the Mavericks, who were without rookie Luka Doncic for a second straight game because of a sore right ankle. Trey Burke added 20 points off the bench in Dallas' fourth straight loss.

    CAVALIERS 112, GRIZZLIES 107

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kevin Love scored a season-high 32 points, Cedi Osman hit the go-ahead 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and Cleveland beat Memphis.

Love, playing in back-to-back games for the first time since returning from foot surgery, had 10 points in the fourth quarter. He was 9 of 15 from the field overall, hit six 3s and made all eight of his free throw attempts.

The five-time All-Star had 12 rebounds in 26 minutes - his most since returning from the injury - but was on the bench for the final 5:23 because he's still on a minutes restriction.

    HAWKS 120, SUNS 112

ATLANTA (AP) - Trae Young and Kent Bazemore each scored 23 points, Taurean Prince added 21 and Atlanta extended Phoenix's franchise-worst losing streak to 17 games.

John Collins finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds for Atlanta, which snapped a two-game skid to avoid a home loss against the NBA's worst team. Just two weeks ago at State Farm Arena, the Hawks allowed the New York Knicks, last in the Eastern Conference, to snap an 18-game slide.

Tyler Johnson scored 29 points, and Devin Booker added 26 for the Suns.

      • Sunday’s 6-pack

Before the Manny Machado signing, these were the six highest contracts ever given to a position player:

        $325M Giancarlo Stanton

        $248M Miguel Cabrera

        $240M Albert Pujols

        $240M Robinson Cano

        $225M Joey Votto

        $214M Prince Fielder

Total number of World Series games for these six guys after signing: Zero

        Quote of the Day
“I think the Baltimore payroll was double what the Tampa payroll was last year. Close to double. There is a correlation, I’m sure there is a correlation, but it’s not as perfect. It’s very difficult to predict things in baseball, to predict player performance. Spending more money helps.”
        Red Sox owner John Henry

        Sunday’s quiz
How many current NBA head coaches have also been the head coach of a D-I college team?

        Saturday’s quiz
Galen Center is USC’s home court for basketball.

        Friday’s quiz
Gene Bartow replaced John Wooden as the basketball coach at UCLA; his son Murry is the interim coach at UCLA this season.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

        13) Ole Miss is having a surprisingly good basketball season under first-year coach Kermit Davis; they were 18-8, 8-5 in the SEC heading into Saturday’s game with a Georgia team that had covered only one of its six SEC road games. Rebels seemed like a good bet at -11.

Except for this: during the day Saturday, about a mile from Ole Miss’ new arena, there was a pro-Confederate rally going on at Oxford Square. This is 2019, and there was a pro-Confederate rally going on in broad daylight. Awesome.

During the national anthem before the basketball game, eight Rebels took a knee to protest this rally going on. Captain Obvious reports that the Ole Miss team was distracted during this game; they blew a 13-point lead, took the lead again, and wound up hanging on for a 72-71 win.

Moral to story: I’d be wary of wagering on Ole Miss in home games going forward; hard to believe this issue is gong away anytime soon. It is one thing to take a knee in San Francisc0; whole ‘nother thing to do it in Oxford, Mississippi.

Feel bad for coach Davis; this is a mess that has nothing to do with him, but it ain’t going to be easy to clean up, no matter what the outcome is. Good luck with your recruiting when stuff like that is going on in your town.

        12) 12-2pm:
        — Virginia 64, Louisville 52- In first half, Cardinals were 10-16 on arc, 1-9 inside arc; in second half, Louisville was 2-17 on arc, 4-13 inside arc- they were outscored 37-15.
        — LSU 82, Tennessee 80, OT— Tigers’ PG Tremont Waters (illness) sat this game out; refs in this game went to replay monitor constantly, Dick Vitale was, ummm….not happy about it.
        — Oklahoma 69, Texas 67— Sooners (-4) led by 17 early in second half.

        11) 2-4pm:
        — TCU 75, Iowa State 72— Cyclones lost three of last four games; they’re in a funk.
        — UMass 80, St Joe’s 79— Visiting Hawks led by 17 at the half.
        — Kentucky 80, Auburn 53— Tigers started this season 11-2, but they’re 2-5 on SEC road. Disappointing for a team that is in top 40 in country in experience.

        10) 4-6pm:
        — North Carolina 77, Florida State 59— This snaps Seminoles’ 8-game win streak; not sure how good FSU is- they did beat LSU and Purdue in November.
        — Dayton 70, Saint Louis 62— Flyers are 18-9, 10-4 in A-14; they’re in 3rd place right now. Top four in A-14 will have an easier path in A-14 tournament.
        — Utah State 78, Boise State 71 OT— Big win for Aggies, whose next two games are San Diego State/Nevada. Need to at least split that pair to stay on/near bubble.

        9) 6-8pm:
        — Duke 75, Syracuse 65— Orangemen led by 5 at half, but were 5-23 on the arc.
        — Oregon State 67, USC 62— Beavers go 3-1 against the LA schools this season.
        — South Dakota State 94, South Dakota 89— Jackrabbits were down 11 at the half.

        8) 8-10pm
        — Texas Tech 91, Kansas 62— This game was 45-20 at the half. Wow.
        — St John’s 78, Seton Hall 70— Red Storm led this game 28-5 out of the gate.
        — Memphis 88, Wichita State 85— Wichita led this game by 16 early, then Memphis went on a great run, then Shockers tied it, but Tigers held on late. #3 on Memphis will play in the NBA soon; #3 on Wichita State is 3-37 on the arc this year. 3 for bleeping 37.

        7) 10pm-midnight:
        — UCLA 90, Oregon 83— Ducks led by 19 early in the second half, second time this season they blew a huge lead to the Bruins.
        — Wisconsin 69, Northwestern 64— Badgers outscored Northwestern 11-5 over final 4:05.
        — San Diego State 60, UNLV 59— Ugly last minute; Rebels missed three of their last five foul shots. UNLV rallied back from down 12, but couldn’t finish the job.

        6) Upsets of the Day:
        — Cleveland State (+16) 83, Northern Kentucky 77
        — James Madison (+14.5) 104, Hofstra 99 OT

        — FIU (+6) 79, Florida Atlantic 76
        — Harvard (+6) 88, Yale 86
        — UAB (+5.5) 76, Southern Miss 72 OT
        — Central Michigan (+5.5) 64, Ball State 57
        — Duquesne (+5.5) 79, George Mason 78
        — Texas A&M (+5.5) 87, Arkansas 80

        5) Baylor 82, West Virginia 75— Mountaineers called a timeout down 1 with 2:06 left; when they inbounded the ball after the timeout, they had six players on the court- not good.

Baylor outscored WVU 16-5 over the last 2:50 of the game; they won despite Makai Mason going 0-7 from floor. In Mason’s last four games, he is 5-30 from the floor, with two games missed mixed in during that time. Have to assume that Mason’s toe injury is still bothering him.

        4) NHL’s Rangers beat New Jersey 5-2 during the afternoon in Madison Square Garden, then at night, St John’s played Seton Hall. Wonder how many people went to both games?

        3) One of my pet peeves when I watch college basketball is play-by-play announcers who think they’re analysts too; there are some guys who never shut up. The play-by-play guy should be the point guard, who sets up the analyst (the basketball expert) to show his expertise.

        2) Oregon State 67, USC 62— Beavers were 15-19 on the foul line, USC was 0-6. At home. In Thursday’s loss at UCLA, OSU was 1-3 on the line, UCLA 15-28. Go figure.

        1) Bulls 126, Celtics 116— Zach LaVine and Lauri Markkanen are first pair of Bulls teammates with 35+ points in the same game since Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen on November 20, 1996.

              • Stretch Run Snapshot
                February 21, 2019
                By Tony Mejia

The NBA will ramp back up for a final seven-week stretch featuring roughly 25 games. While some teams will be openly tanking for the best chance at a Duke freshman, there are other teams desperate to improve their playoff position or qualify for the postseason in the first place. Here’s a look at where the value lies, who to fade and where to get in on the MVP race.

                Fire at Will

                Milwaukee Bucks:
One of the top acquisitions at the trade deadline, sharp-shooting forward Nikola Mirotic, will finally debut after the break after dealing with a calf injury. Considering how seamlessly he’s expected to fit in if healthy, the Bucks are going to be able to put on the blinders and make a run at the NBA’s top record, which is the only way they’re getting through the East and into the Finals without the benefit of having won a single playoff series since 2001, falling in the first round eight straight times. The Bucks were 23-5 at the new Fiserv Forum coming out of All-Star, trailing only the Nuggets and Raptors in home winning percentage. They’ve won three of four over Toronto and own the tie-breaker in the East, so I’m expecting them to wind up the No. 1 seed in the conference when the playoff begins. Look for Giannis Antetokounmpo to chase the MVP, so I don’t see much to fade here, especially with a very manageable schedule.

Orlando Magic: After pulling within a single game of the Southeast Division lead, the Magic are eyeing their first playoff appearance since 2012 and have a schedule they can take advantage of to make It happen. Orlando had covered seven of eight entering Friday’s home date vs. the Bulls and play the Knicks, Hawks, Grizzlies and Cavs twice. With second-year forward Jonathan Isaac starting to hit his stride to help elevate Orlando’s level of play, the Magic need their questionable decisions to hang on to unrestricted free agents Nikola Vucevic and Terrence Ross to pay off in helping their young nucleus pick up some postseason experience. Improving guard play would provide a boost, but it appears that D.J. Augustin and rookie Isaiah Briscoe will have to hold the fort down since it’s unlikely Markelle Fultz will aid the cause this season.

Toronto Raptors: With the Bucks setting the pace, expect the Raptors to be hot on their trail as they look to emerge as the East’s top seed for a second straight season. With Kawhi Leonard leading the way and LeBron James finally in a different conference, this will be the Raptors’ best opportunity to finally break through with the franchise’s first Finals appearance. They’ll have to finish a game ahead of Milwaukee to finish No. 1 but will only be outside of Canada for 11 more regular-season games, saddled with a trip longer than two road dates only once. The Raps should be able to help newcomers Marc Gasol and Jeremy Lin settle in since they’ll be home or across the street in Detroit between now and March 8.

Utah Jazz: Since the Western Conference is loaded, there aren’t many teams who can claim an easy schedule. The Jazz are an exception, having already finished up with the Warriors, Rockets, Raptors, Celtics and 76ers. They’ll get two games with the Suns, Grizzlies, Wizards, Clippers and Lakers and count home dates with the Bucks, Thunder and Nuggets as the matchups that look toughest on paper. Considering Donovan Mitchell was a slow starter this season and Rudy Gobert spent the break stewing over his All-Star snub on a tropical beach, Utah has a great opportunity to work its way up the standings after opening the unofficial second half of the season just one game up on eighth in the conference. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them wind up with a top-four spot and homecourt advantage.

                Fade City

                Charlotte Hornets:
The Hornets hosted the All-Star game, but that will likely be the highlight of the season since the team has already started their crash and the hold they have on the Southeast Division title lead isn’t one they’re destined to cling on to. After dropping its last two games prior to the break, Charlotte has now lost four of five and is under pressure to start fast on a four-game homestand that will be the longest it has left. Seven of its next eight will be played at Spectrum Center, but the Warriors, Rockets and Trail Blazers are among the visitors. The Hornets have to play Golden State, Houston and Toronto twice more and will also visit Milwaukee and Utah. Kemba Walker is going to have to weigh whether he’ll stay put without the benefit of another playoff run, which doesn’t bode well for the team’s chances unless Michael Jordan can be really persuasive.

Cleveland Cavs: The Cavs seem to be well-positioned whenever a generational talent becomes available, so even though the Suns, Knicks and Bulls are fully engaged in tanking protocol, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Cleveland find a way to out-lose them all. Kevin Love is returning to the fold but isn’t likely to go too hard, so a combination of Larry Nance, Jr., Tristan Thompson, Ante Zizic and Marquese Chriss will help Love man the four and five. Rookie Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, Brandon Knight, David Nwaba, Nik Stauskas and Turkish small forward Cedi Osman will play the bulk of the minutes at the point and along the perimeter, so you can expect a team that shows up and essentially scrimmages, putting on a good show before losing down the stretch. The Cavs entered Thursday’s home date with the Suns on a 4-23 run and won’t win another five games this season, which means they’ll drop over 65.

Indiana Pacers: After losing their first four games without Victor Oladipo, the Pacers opened February with six victories, covering in five of their wins. They had the Bucks on the ropes before being caught from behind in the fourth just before the break and picked up standout defender Wes Matthews in the buyout market to help fill the vacancy in their starting lineup. While those are good things, Indiana will play 13 of its final 23 on the road and will stop through Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Denver, Portland, L.A., Golden State, Oklahoma City and Boston in March. Their schedule next month is too tough to overcome, so count on the Pacers falling out of the No. 3 spot where they reside coming ou of the break, ultimately opening the playoffs on the road in either Boston or Philly.

Los Angeles Lakers: L.A. hopes to get point guard Lonzo Ball back from an ankle injury in March, which is important since another five-game trip awaits where it has to play in Toronto and Milwaukee. The month also sees the Lakers host the Bucks on March 1, followed by the Clippers, Nuggets, Celtics, Nets and Kings, Wizards and Hornets. None of those games can be deemed locks. The team’s April slate consists entirely of teams that would currently make the playoffs – OKC, Golden State, the Clippers, Utah, and Portland. Westgate has a will-they or won’t-they make the playoffs prop in play offering +120 odds if you’re still a believer while laying a -140 tag on ‘no’ since that’s currently chalk with the Clippers a full three games on them in the race for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference. Although I fully expected the Lakers to make the playoffs when the season began, the challenges they’ll have to overcome over the next seven weeks makes it difficult to forecast a positive outcome.

                Proceed with Caution

Boston Celtics: Considering Kyrie Irving is feuding with teammates and he just spent the entire All-Star Weekend seemingly plotting joining forces with good friend Kevin Durant, a lack of harmony may become insurmountable for the team that has now been replaced as the Eastern Conference favorite by the Raptors and Bucks (2/1), coming into Thursday’s resumption of action, coming in with 11/4 odds. Irving has said that he and backup Terry Rozier no have a contentious dynamic since they’re fighting for minutes, so it remains to be seen whether this is a situation that Brad Stevens can help boss Dany Ainge salvage. There are reasons to like Boston, from Al Horford’s great form and good health to the fact Gordon Hayward is clearly also feeling more comfortable than he did trying to regain his rhythm at the start of the season, but the schedule works against them. Of the Celtics’ final 24 games, 14 will come on the road. Portland, Houston, Sacramento, Denver and San Antonio will all make its only trips into TD Garden, so the home slate isn’t an easy one. It’s hard to imagine Boston finishing ahead of even Philadelphia in the Atlantic, much less Toronto, so it is likely looking at a No. 4 seed.

Brooklyn Nets: While it’s hard to envision the Nets missing the playoffs after such a strong start, their first playoff appearance since 2015 isn’t guaranteed. It’s fantastic that Caris LeVert was able to get back before the break and he should be a factor in March and April, but a ridiculously long seven-game road trip awaits from March 13-28 with no pushovers on the dockets whatsoever. Brooklyn will then return home to face the Celtics, Bucks and Raptors in consecutive games before heading back on the road for a rematch in Milwaukee and a game at Indiana the following night. Getting to the finish line won’t be easy.

                Denver Nuggets:
Paul Millsap looks like he’s healthier than he’s been all season after being victimized by a broken toe and an array of ankle injuries. His surgically-repaired wrist has held up and it’s no coincidence that his final performance prior to the All-Star break saw him match a season-high with 25 points while adding 13 boards in a win over Sacramento. Isaiah Thomas has also debuted and promises to be an asset off the bench behind Jamal Murray, who also missed a couple of weeks. Despite guard Gary Harris and wing Will Barton also being out for substantial portions of the season, the Nuggets have been among the Western Conference’s top teams and would ordinarily be worth backing now that they’re closer to full strength if it weren’t for the challenging schedule that awaits. Denver faces Oklahoma City, Portland, Utah, San Antonio and Indiana twice. The Nuggets have still got games at Golden State and Houston left and will be on the road for 12 of their final 20, which ramps up the pressure for them to do well on next week’s four-game homestand which features three teams that would currently reach the playoffs (Clips, OKC, Jazz) coming into town.

Oklahoma City Thunder: Although they were upset by the Pelicans in the final game before the break, the Thunder still open action after All-Star on an 11-2 run as they welcome Utah into town. The hope is that top perimeter defender Andre Roberson is able to return at some point and Markieff Morris was acquired via the buyout market to significantly upgrade front court depth, but the remaining schedule will be a chore. The OKC will play two games against the Jazz, Nuggets and Raptors in addition to single game with the 76ers, Warriors , Rockets and a season-finale at the Bucks. Although Paul George is a legitimate MVP candidate, Russell Westbrook’s shooting woes make it difficult to feel very comfortable expecting Oklahoma City to seamlessly manage the final quarter of the schedule well enough to pass Golden State or Denver in the standings in order to secure homecourt advantage.

                MVP Race

Westgate’s NBA MVP odds has Antetokoumpo and James Harden as co-favorites (10/11). Paul George, who hopefully you got in on in December when he was a 250-to-1 shot instead of an 8-to-1 choice. He’s certainly made quite the push over the past six weeks and bears watching since he’s done such a nice job balancing out Westbrook’s shooting struggles while being inspired to similarly stuff the stat-sheet. While Antetokounmpo is my likely MVP, if you’re looking to get rich, I’d take a flier on Toronto’s Leonard, who is currently available at 50-to-1.

If the Raps have a great run against a manageable schedule and beat out the Bucks for the East’s top seed, Leonard could command a late surge of first-place votes with a great final few weeks, especially if he starts playing in back-to-backs. Embiid (30/1) is already dealing with knee soreness and Stephen Curry (30/1), LeBron (30/1), Kevin Durant (50/1) and Nikola Jokic (60/1) all have a ceiling, so I’d ride Kawhi for a big payday and put down a nice chunk on the “Greek Freak” to cover my bases since I think Harden’s usage rate will ultimately work against him when all is said and done.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                        13) Golfer Dustin Johnson won the WGC-Mexico Championship Sunday, the 20th PGA Tour victory of his career. Read something surprising about Johnson this weekend; he is apparently “a blackjack savant” who likes to play five hands at a time, and instantly knows the odds of each hand as they’re dealt, which makes him like Alan in The Hangover movies. Who knew?

                        12) How come none of the AAF teams have white jerseys? All eight teams wear the same jerseys every week. Not sure thats a great idea.

                        11) Michigan State 77, Michigan 70— Spartans’ win in Ann Arbor without two injured starters? Three MSU starters played 37:00+; quite an effort.

                        10) Cincinnati 64, UConn 60— Bearcats led 50-35 with 9:05 left, gave up a 16-0 run, then pulled the game out late, small consolation if had Cincy, -6.

                        9) Xavier 66, Villanova 54— Wildcats lost four straight road games for first time since 2012; they looked like a tired team in this game.

                        8) Rutgers 68, Minnesota 64— Horrendous loss for the sliding Gophers, who’ve lost six of their last seven games. Their #244 non-conference schedule ain’t going to help on Selection Sunday.

                        7) UNC-Greensboro 60, East Tennessee State 59— These teams are likely to meet again in SoCon semi-finals. This is an underrated league with four quality teams this season.

                        6) Siena 67, Marist 55— First-year coach Jamion Christian has the Saints at 15-14, 10-6 in a weak MAAC- they’ve won six of their last eight games, with experience team #247 that is playing 2nd-slowest tempo in country. Solid coaching job, cleaning up the mess of a program that was 8-24 last year, 4-14 in conference.

                        5) UCF 95, SMU 48— Golden Knights’ 7-6 center Tacko Fall is fluent in four languages and is learning a fifth one. He had 23 points, 20 rebounds in this game.

                        4) Tucker Barnhart batted leadoff for the Reds the other day; don’t see lot of catchers batting leadoff, even if it is in spring training.

                        3) AAF trivia: Salt Lake City Stallions became first team in league history to win SU as an underdog when they upset the Arizona Hotshots Saturday.

                        2) Houston Astros have an odd spring training schedule; they play the Mets the next three Mondays, the Marlins the next three Thursdays and St Louis the next three Fridays.

                        1) Stat Comp of the Day:
Someone posted this on Twitter Saturday. Player A is Stephen Strasburg’s career stats. Any guesses on which Hall of Famer is Player B?

                        Player A: 1,229.2 IP, 94-52 W-L record, 2.91 FIP, 129 ERA+

                        Player B: 1,221.1 IP, 94-46 W-L record, 2.81 FIP, 122 ERA+

Player B is George Herman (Babe) Ruth, who I’m told was a pretty good hitter, too.

                          Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Kings at Timberwolves – 8:05 PM EST

As February comes to a close, Sacramento (31-28 SU, 36-23 ATS) is still in the playoff mix in the Western Conference. Following the Clippers’ loss at Denver on Sunday, the Kings moved to within a game of the final playoff spot in the West. The Kings close out a tough four-game road trip that started in Denver prior to the All-Star break, as Sacramento lost a pair of close games to the Nuggets and Warriors by two points each.

Sacramento broke through on Saturday night by edging Oklahoma City, 119-116 as six-point underdogs. In spite of the high-scoring result, the game remained UNDER the total of 240. The Thunder were coming off an overtime triumph over the Jazz the previous night, as the Kings jumped out to a 14-point lead before holding off a late OKC rally. Buddy Hield continued his breakout season for Sacramento by scoring 34 points, while the Kings improved to 7-1 ATS in February.

The Timberwolves (28-31 SU, 31-28 ATS) are riding a five-game ATS hot streak after covering as 13-point underdogs in Saturday’s 140-128 setback at Milwaukee. The loss ended a three-game winning streak, while Minnesota couldn’t hold onto a two-point lead heading into the final quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns missed his second straight game with concussion symptoms, as Derrick Rose paced Minnesota with 23 points off the bench in the Wolves’ 17th road loss of the season.

The home team has captured each of the first three matchups this season. Sacramento took the first two meetings at Golden 1 Center in the role of a home underdog, including a 141-130 shootout victory on December 12. However, the Wolves broke through against the Kings five days later at Target Center in a 132-105 blowout as eight-point favorites, as Minnesota built a 30-point halftime lead.

                          Turning Point?

It’s obviously a difficult and awkward situation in New Orleans regarding the Anthony Davis situation the rest of the season. The Pelicans (27-34 SU, 29-31-1 ATS) rebounded from blowing a double-digit halftime lead in Friday’s loss at Indiana to cruise past the Lakers the next night, 128-115 as 6 ½-point underdogs. Not only was it the second straight home underdog win for New Orleans, but they knocked off L.A. without Davis in the lineup as Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle combined for 51 points in the victory.

The Pelicans welcome in the 76ers (38-22 SU, 28-32 ATS), who were steamrolled by the Blazers on Saturday afternoon, 130-115. Joel Embiid remains sidelined for Philadelphia, as the 76ers lost for only the eighth time in 32 home contests. Now, the Sixers look to improve on a 14-14 road mark, as Philadelphia owns a 4-2 ATS record in its last six opportunities in the underdog role.

In the first matchup this season, the 76ers held off the Pelicans, 121-120 as 3 ½-point favorites in November. Davis was limited to 4-of-13 shooting for 12 points, while Embiid scored 31 points and 19 rebounds in the victory. New Orleans has failed to cover in its last three opportunities as a home favorite, while losing five of its past eight home contests against Eastern Conference opponents.

                          Thirtysomething?

The drama continues for the Lakers (29-30 SU, 25-32-2 ATS), who are coming off a 13-point setback at New Orleans on Saturday as 6 ½-point favorites. LeBron James posted 27 points and 12 assists, but the Lakers lost for the fifth time in the last six games away from Staples Center with the only victory in this stretch coming at Boston on a buzzer-beater. The Lakers are seeking their second consecutive season with at least 30 victories following a four-year stretch not eclipsing the 30-win mark. L.A. will reach the 30-win plateau eventually, but the Lakers remain three games behind the Clippers for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Lakers head to Memphis to face a Grizzlies’ (23-38 SU, 26-35 ATS) coming off four consecutive defeats. The latest setback occurred on Saturday night at Cleveland, 112-107, as the Grizzlies have drilled the OVER in each of the past four contests. Memphis has cashed in four of the previous five opportunities as a home underdog, while the road team has won each of the first two meetings between the Lakers and Grizzlies this season.

                          Eastern Travels

The Warriors (42-17 SU, 24-34-1 ATS) play eight of the next 11 games away from the Bay Area with a pair of four-game road trips. The first three contests take place against Southeast division opponents, starting with Charlotte. Golden State suffered its sixth straight ATS defeat in Saturday’s 118-112 setback to Houston as 12-point favorites on Saturday. The Warriors lost to the Rockets for the third time this season, while falling behind by 15 points after one quarter as Houston played without James Harden.

Golden State rode an 11-game road winning streak from December 29 through February 8, but the Warriors were tripped up at Portland prior to the All-Star break to end that run. During this current 0-6 ATS run, Steve Kerr’s team was listed as a nine-point favorite or higher five times, as the Warriors have compiled a 4-2 SU mark since February 8.

The Hornets (28-31 SU, 29-30 ATS) face the Warriors for the first time this season as Charlotte has lost four straight home meetings with Golden State. Charlotte erased an 18-point deficit on Saturday against Brooklyn to take an eight-point lead with three minutes remaining in regulation. The Nets outscored the Hornets, 14-4 down the stretch to stun Charlotte, 117-115 and fall to 2-5 SU/ATS the last seven games.

                          Alamo No

It’s been a Rodeo Trip from hell for the Spurs (33-28 SU, 32-28-1 ATS), who fell to 1-6 on their eight-game swing. To make matters worse, San Antonio was the first visiting team to lose at Madison Square Garden since December 1 as the Knicks snapped an 18-game home skid in Sunday’s 130-118 triumph as nine-point underdogs. The Spurs struggled from three-point range by hitting only 6-of-24 three-point attempts, while allowing at least 120 points in a road loss for the eighth straight time.

The Spurs remain in New York City on Monday to face the Nets (31-30 SU, 34-27 ATS), who have lost three of their past four games at Barclays Center. Brooklyn rebounded from a 14-point home defeat to Portland by winning at Charlotte on Saturday behind D’Angelo Russell’s 40 points. Since a six-game hot streak in January, the Nets have lost four consecutive games off a win, while looking to avenge a 117-114 defeat at San Antonio on January 31 as eight-point underdogs.
