    • Inside the Paint - Saturday
      Chris David

The NBA favorites kept trucking along Friday with a 6-1 mark but the point-spread mattered as underdogs went 4-3 against the spread. Including those results, the ‘chalk’ has gone 11-2 SU and 7-6 ATS the past two nights. The big winner lately has been the ‘under’ as the low side has gone 10-2-1 in the last two days.

Saturday’s slate has eight games on tap and below is my quick handicap.

      Closing Time

Boston (43-29 SU, 34-36-2 ATS) at Charlotte (32-29 SU, 31-38-2 ATS)

The Celtics will be headed to the playoffs but they’re hoping to jump Indiana for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Hornets are looking to snag the eighth and final spot in the East but they have plenty of work to do. Boston (-3) opened as a short road favorite and it’s won and covered both games at home against Charlotte this season but they dropped a 117-112 road loss to the Hornets on Nov. 19. The Celtics come into this game off back-to-back losses and it’s burned bettors with a 1-4 ATS mark in their last five games. However, Boston has won four of its last six games as a road favorite. The Hornets haven’t been great home underdogs (2-5 SU, 2-4-1 ATS) and they’ve lost their last four contests in that role. Charlotte has five wins since the All-Star break and only one came against a playoff team (Nets). Even though the form of Boston hasn’t been great, it has racked up four consecutive wins against losing clubs.

Miami (35-37 SU, 39-33 ATS) at Washington (30-43 SU, 35-38 ATS)

The Heat currently sit in the eighth spot of the East but a loss in D.C. tonight would put them in a tie with Orlando. Miami is listed as a short underdog (+1 ½) and it will be playing on no rest after getting run at Milwaukee last night. The Heat have gone 5-5 SU and 6-4 ATS in back-to-back spots and they’ve been better away from home (5-3). These teams have played to three shootouts this season, with Miami taking two of those meetings and that includes a 113-112 at Washington on Oct. 18. The ‘over’ has gone 3-0 and the high side is on a 5-0 run in this series.

      Heavy Chalk

The final quarter of the regular season has become very tough to handicap at times just because the lineups are always up in the air and often unpredictable. Philadelphia (-8), Utah (-10) and Golden State (-14) are all laying big prices tonight and the 76ers and Jazz are doing so on the road versus the Hawks and Bulls respectively.

Among that pair, I’d expect Utah to be ready in Chicago after it dropped a 117-114 decision to Atlanta on Thursday. This is the final game of a four-game road trip for the Jazz and the club has a legit chance to push all the way up to the fourth seed in the Western Conference based on its upcoming schedule.

The 76ers were upset by the Hawks 123-121 on Jan. 11 at home and payback should be on their mind. Atlanta is a fun team to watch, especially when it’s connecting from distance, but it still has the worst defense in the league and it turns the ball over way too much. Atlanta has won three of its last four at home and the offense posted 128, 132 and 117 in the wins.

Golden State just covered as a double-digit favorite on Thursday in a 112-89 win over Indiana and it would be surprising to see them lose at Oracle Arena tonight. However, they just dropped two games in this role (Rockets, Suns) and they’ve overall record as double-digit home favorites is a solid 16-2, but they've been hit or miss for bettors (9-9 ATS).

Looking at our Parlay Calculator, you could get 3/5 odds (Bet $100 to win $60) on the 'chalk' trio if you rolled them into a money-line parlay – 76ers (-340), Jazz (-600), Warriors (-1600). Or you can play the ‘dogs and get back close to a 200/1 return with three outright upsets.

      Playoff Power

Only one game on Saturday has two playoff teams squaring off and it’s a non-conference tilt from the Moda Center with Detroit (37-34 SU, 36-33-2 ATS) visiting Portland (44-27 SU, 40-31 ATS). The Pistons dropped a 100-87 decision at this venue last season but had won and covered five straight games against the Trail Blazers prior to that setback. This is the first meeting between the pair this season and they’ll square off again next Saturday from Michigan.

The Pistons enter this game on a 3-1 run and with road games at Golden State and Denver on deck, the sense of urgency should be he high for this matchup. Portland is certainly no slouch and it has gone 5-1 in its last six games and three of those wins came at home. The Blazers have feasted on the Eastern Conference at home this season, going 11-2 SU and 9-4 ATS. Meanwhile, Detroit has gone 5-6 on the road versus the West and only one win came against a playoff team (Clippers). They have been competitive with a 7-3-1 ATS mark and total bettors should note that the ‘under’ has gone 8-2-1 in those games.

      Meaningless Matchups

There are two ‘roll the ball out’ games on Saturday between non-playoff clubs and while I would normally lean to the ‘over’ in those contests, the lack of scoring depth for these teams is evident.

      Minnesota at Memphis:
This will be the fourth and final encounter between the pair and Memphis has gone 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in the first three meetings while the ‘under’ has gone 2-1. The Grizzlies are playing on no rest and they’ve struggled to a 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS mark in those spots. Minnesota has dropped five straight games both SU and ATS entering this matchup and the offense (104.4 PPG) has been inconsistent, which has led to a 4-1 ‘under’ mark. The Grizzlies could be without point guard Mike Conley, who is listed as 'questionable.'

      Phoenix at Sacramento:
Another season series wrapping up here and the Kings (-10) are laying a big price in this Pacific Division matchup. Sacramento has gone 2-1 both SU and ATS versus Phoenix this season, scoring 122 and 117 in the wins. The Kings are still pushing the pace and scoring lately but the Suns have been held to 102 points or less in four of their last five games. The loss of Kelly Oubre (thumb) certainly won’t help Phoenix in the offensive department. The line is high but make a note that the Kings have gone 12-2 SU and 10-4 ATS as home favorites this season while the ‘under’ has gone 10-3-1.

          • Hawks snap 76ers' 6-game winning streak, 129-127
            March 23, 2019
            By The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Luka Doncic had a triple-double, Dirk Nowitzki scored a season-best 21 points in a rare start and the Dallas Mavericks capitalized on Stephen Curry's absence to beat the Golden State Warriors 126-91 on Saturday night.

Golden State dropped out of the top seed in the Western Conference to a half-game behind Denver. With Curry resting, Kevin Durant had 25 points and DeMarcus Cousins scored 19. The Warriors were 4 for 30 from 3-point range, with Durant going 0 for 8 and Klay Thompson missing all four of his tries.

Doncic had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Dallas had dropped 12 straight in Oakland since its previous victory in April 2012.

The Mavs never trailed and built their lead to 43 early in the final quarter. Maxi Kleber had 16 points and Ryan Broekhoff added 17 off the bench for Dallas, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

            HAWKS 129, 76ERS 127

ATLANTA (AP) - Trae Young scored 32 points, including a last-second, go-ahead floater, as Atlanta ended Philadelphia's six-game winning streak.

With 3.5 seconds remaining, Young took the inbound pass from Kevin Huerter and dribbled past Jimmy Butler before sinking the short, soft jumper for the lead with 0.1 seconds remaining. Butler missed a long attempt as the final buzzer sounded.

Taurean Prince had 23 points for Atlanta.

Joel Embiid had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Butler had 25 points for Philadelphia.

The 76ers began the night with a solid hold on third place in the Eastern Conference, 3+ games ahead of Indiana and four games ahead of Boston.

            JAZZ 114, BULLS 83

CHICAGO (AP) - Rudy Gobert had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Utah rolled to one of its most lopsided wins of the season.

The 31-point margin of victory was just three shy of Utah's season high. The Jazz raced out to a 70-36 halftime lead and never looked back in winning for the sixth time in seven games.

Donovan Mitchell added 16 points and eight rebounds. Derrick Favors scored 13.

Lauri Markkanen led Chicago with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He made just 6 of 20 shots, and the Bulls delivered one of their worst performances in a rough season.

            TIMBERWOLVES 112, GRIZZLIES 99

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns had 33 points and 23 rebounds, and Minnesota ended a five-game slide with a win over Memphis.

Andrew Wiggins added 22 points and rookie Josh Okogie had 17 as Minnesota, eliminated from the playoffs Friday night, ended its longest losing streak of the season. All five Minnesota starters reached double figures in scoring.

Mike Conley led Memphis with 23 points, and Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 14 rebounds.

            HEAT 113, WIZARDS 108

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dwyane Wade scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, helping Miami remain alone in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Wade also had nine rebounds while scoring in double digits for a ninth consecutive game.

Dion Waiters added 19 points and Josh Richardson had 18 for Miami, which remained a game ahead of Orlando in the race for the East's last playoff spot. Bam Adebayo had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Jeff Green scored 25 points for Washington, which has lost four straight. Thomas Bryant had 17 points, Bobby Portis Jr. added 14 and both grabbed 11 rebounds. The 11th-place Wizards fell 6 1/2 games behind Miami with eight to play.

            HORNETS 124, CELTICS 117

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 18 of his game-high 36 points in the fourth quarter and the Charlotte rallied to beat Boston.

It was Walker's 23rd game of 30 or more points this season. He added 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Rookie Miles Bridges scored a career-high 20 points, Marvin Williams and Malik Monk added 13 points apiece and Dwayne Bacon scored 11.

Charlotte won its second straight, improved to 33-39 and kept its faint postseason hopes alive.

Kyrie Irving led Boston with 31 points. Jaylen Brown added 29 points and Marcus Morris 15. The Celtics (43-30) lost their third straight game despite hitting 19 3-pointers.

                Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

                13) Thursday in Las Vegas, a courageous human wagered $500,000 on Michigan on the money line, which means all they have to do is win, no point spread; when Wolverines beat Montana, he banked $27,777.

On Friday, he took that $527,777 and put it all on Texas Tech on the money line, where he collected $37,698. Didn’t have to sweat in either game, either.

                12) LSU 69, Maryland 67— Tony Benford is the interim coach at LSU; he was coach at North Texas for five years, going 62-95, 30-60 in conference games.

He looks a lot smarter coaching the players he recruited for LSU. Let’s say the Tigers make a run to the Final Four; would Benford become this generation’s Steve Fisher? Fisher took over the Michigan squad just before the NCAA’s in 1989 and won the national title with them, getting himself the full-time job the next year.

                11) Kentucky 62, Wofford 56— You look at Wofford’s success this year, and fact that Furman, NC-Greensboro and East Tennessee State are all solid programs, and you’d wish ESPN would show some SoCon games on national TV during the winter.

I know the games are all on ESPN+, but they deserve national recognition.

Wofford’s best 3-point shooter is Fletcher Magee; he made more 3-pointers than anyone ever in college ball, but he was 0-12 behind the arc in this game. He was 7-12 against Seton Hall.

                10) Michigan 64, Florida 49— When you take 26 3-pointers and two foul shots, it is really hard to win. Have to make an awful lot of those 3’s. Gators were 9-26 on arc, 2-2 on foul line.

Teams that advance deep into the tournament often get some help along the way; Florida beat Nevada in first round, giving Michigan an easier 2nd round opponent.

                9) Florida State 90, Murray State 62— Seminoles are deep, athletic and on a mission, after one of their teammates lost his dad this week. FSU won 16 of its last 18 games- their next game vs Gonzaga will be very interesting.

Ja Morant is about to become really rich; Murray State had a great 28-5 season. Racers went 54-11 in Morant’s two seasons; they were 33-31 in the two seasons before he got there.

                8) Gonzaga 83, Baylor 71— Zags are in Sweet 16 for fifth year in a row; they’re this generation’s version of Jerry Tarkanian’s UNLV teams— they dominate a cruddy league, and play well on the national stage in pre-conference games and in March. They also get a lot of transfers, because kids don’t want to play on losing teams.

End of a unique college career for Baylor’s Makai Mason, who played in NCAA’s for two teams, Yale/Baylor. When he was at Yale, he scored 31 points AGAINST Baylor when the Bulldogs upset Baylor in an NCAA tournament game in 2016.

                7) Michigan State 70, Minnesota 50— Another case where a first round upset gave the favorite in the second round an easier game. Gophers went 2-22 on the arc, didn’t offer much resistance.

I would be in favor of a rule where only eight teams from any conference can make the NCAA’s; if you can’t finish 8th in your league, how can you be allowed to play for a national title? This will never happen, because the big $$$ leagues have clout, but it would be a good idea.

                6) Purdue 87, Villanova 61— Boilermakers have two guards who take a ton of 3’s; Carson Edwards has taken 347 3’s (34.6%), Ryan Cline has taken 251 (40.6%). They combined to make 13-24 in this game, a surprisingly easy win.

Major tank job by Villanova; Purdue opened 2nd half on a 16-0 run. Wildcats won two of last three national titles, but other than those two years, they’ve lost their last five second round games. Big East has been mercifully eliminated from this tournament.

                5) Auburn 89, Kansas 75— Tigers scored 28 points in first 7:57 of this game, made Charles Barkley’s night by whipping the Jayhawks. This game was 51-25 at halftime!!!!

There are rumors that Bill Self is going to try his hand in the NBA next season, especially if the NCAA is nipping at Kansas’ heels.

                4) Justin Verlander got a 2-year, $66M extension from the Astros Saturday, so it was a good day for him and his wife, Kate Upton.

                3) After the first round of the NCAA’s, there were only nine perfect brackets on ESPN’s contest, out of 17.2 million entries.

                2) A’s-Mariners played 12 innings in Tokyo Thursday; Japanese pro baseball has tie games- wonder what the Japanese fans think about playing games until there is a winner, the way it is done here?

                1) The 68 teams in the NCAA tournament represent 37 different states.
