Even though the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament receives all the attention at the sports books, the NBA continues to offer up betting opportunities. March Madness bettors who clobbered early with the underdogs may’ve chased on Thursday with Association plays and if you did bet favorites, then accept our congratulations. The ‘chalk’ went 5-1 straight up and 4-2 against the spread last night and that included three easy winners late in the Kings, Pistons and Warriors. Total bettors riding the ‘under’ also prospered as the low side went 5-1.

Friday’s card has seven games and listed below is my quick handicap and fearless "Best Bets."

Memphis (29-42 SU, 33-37-1 ATS) at Orlando (34-38 SU, 38-33-1 ATS)

This is a must-win spot for the Magic, who are fighting for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conferenec. The pair just met recently in Memphis on Mar. 10 and the Grizzlies captured a 105-97 win as one-point home favorites. Orlando is now listed as a 6 ½-point home favorite and it comes into this game with three straight wins and covers albeit against non-playoff teams. The Grizz are certainly in that class too and they did just beat Houston 126-125 at home on Wednesday. Is this the letdown spot? It certainly feels like it and even though Memphis is 6-2 ATS versus the number in its last eight, both losses came on the road. The ‘under’ (208) cashed in their recent meeting and the low side is on a 4-1 run in this series. Also, the Magic are on a 5-0 ‘under’ run in their last five games but Memphis brings in a 5-1 ‘over’ mark into this contest and it’s been chucking from 3-point land a lot recently. I thought the total might get pushed up based on the Grizzlies recent form so I’ll buy into the line and lean low.

Best Bets: Under, Memphis Team Total Under

Denver (48-22 SU, 37-33 ATS) at New York (14-58 SU, 30-40-2 ATS)

The Nuggets (-11) are laying a big price at Madison Square Garden and they’ve gone 11-6 as road favorites this season but they’re just 6-11 ATS. Denver is playing on no rest after beating Washington 113-108 last night. The Nuggets have been great in these situations, going 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS on back-to-back spots. Denver has won two straight and seven of the last eight meetings versus New York and it’s gone 6-2 ATS during this run. The ‘over’ has cashed in five straight between the pair and the Knicks have allowed 129.3 points per game in their last three. I’m expecting another blowout and the Nuggets have the depth to fill up the scoreboard.

Best Bet: Denver Team Total Over

L.A. Clippers (42-30 SU, 40-31-1 ATS) at Cleveland (19-53 SU, 35-36-1 ATS)

These teams will meet twice over the next eight days with the rematch coming at the Staples Center on Mar. 30. Even when the Cavaliers had a loaded roster over the last two seasons, the Clippers have gone 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS in this series. Times have certainly changed this season and Los Angeles enters this game as a road favorite. Make a note that Doc Rivers and company have been very good in that role (9-2 SU, 8-3 ATS). Cleveland has turned a profit for bettors (9-4 ATS) since the All-Star break and it enters this game off back-to-back wins against playoff teams (Pistons, Bucks). Be aware that the Cavaliers haven’t won three straight all season (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS) and I believe that’s the angle you press here.

Best Bet: Los Angeles Clippers

Oklahoma City (42-30 SU, 36-36 ATS) at Toronto (51-21 SU, 31-40-1 ATS)

Quick rematch game here as the pair finish off a home-and-home set at the Scotiabank Arena from Canada on Friday. Toronto defeated Oklahoma City 123-114 in overtime on Wednesday as a five-point road underdog. Prior to that win, the Thunder had won and covered three straight games in this series and four of the last five. Point guard Kyle Lowry (ankle) will miss another game for the Raptors. It’s hard to make a case for Oklahoma City, who has dropped four straight games both SU and ATS. All of the losses came to playoff teams and the offense (103.8 PPG) hasn’t been clicking during this skid. Toronto has gone 29-7 at home this season and that includes a 5-2 mark since the All-Stark break. If OKC loses this game tonight, they could fall from the fifth seed in the West down to the No. 8 spot. Make a note that the Thunder have gone 17-9 SU and 15-11 ATS versus the East this season and Boston is the only team to sweep them (2-0) in their non-conference matchups. I’m going to buy the mild surprise in this spot and lean to the road underdog.

Best Bet: Oklahoma City ML

San Antonio (42-30 SU, 40-31-1 ATS) at Houston (45-27, 33-37-2 ATS)

This is a quality game and a tough one to handicap. Both teams have been playing great and both of enter this game off losses. San Antonio stifled Houston 96-89 on Nov. 10 as a 3 ½-point home underdog but the Rockets have won the last two meetings (136-105, 108-101) between the pair this season. This is a big step up in class for San Antonio, who is 9-1 in its last 10. However, only two of those games were on the road and they were against the Hawks and Mavericks. Houston has been a bit of a bully lately as well and its last game against a playoff team came on Mar. 13, which ended in a 106-104 loss at home to Golden State. The ‘under’ is on a 5-1 run in this series and I expect a tight game tonight as these teams are projected to meet in the first round of the playoffs in the 3-6 matchup.

Best Bet: Under

Miami (35-36 SU, 39-32 ATS) at Milwaukee (53-19 SU, 42-28-2 ATS)

Another quick rematch game here as the Bucks rallied past the Heat last Friday for a 113-98 win as five-point road underdogs. Miami led by 20 points (62-42) at halftime before Milwaukee embarrassed them with a 71-36 effort in the second-half. Since that collapse, the Heat have won and covered three straight and the last two were impressive wins at the Thunder and Spurs. Miami has dropped two straight games to the Bucks by double digits but they did capture the previous six meetings between the pair. Giannis Antetokounmpo is expected back for the Bucks on Friday but key pieces in Malcolm Brogdon and Nikola Mirotic remain ‘out’ tonight. The ‘under’ is on a 6-1 run in this series and I’m not expecting fireworks tonight.

Best Bet: Under

The Nets were looking at a 0-4 mark on their current seven-game road trip this past Tuesday but they pulled off an improbable 123-121 comeback win over Sacramento. Brooklyn outscored the Kings 45-18 in the fourth quarter and All-Star D’Angelo Russell went nuts with 44 points. The former Laker will try to repeat that effort on Friday against the team that gave up on him. Los Angeles will be playing its first game at home after a five-game road trip and LeBron James is expected to give it a go tonight. These clubs met in the middle of December and the Nets earned a 115-110 win over the Lakers as 1 ½-point home underdogs. I’m expecting a nice back-and-forth game tonight and if the shots fall from distance for Los Angeles, this game should go high.

Harden has 61 to tie career best, lead Rockets over Spurs

HOUSTON (AP) James Harden matched his career high with 61 points, including 27 in the first quarter, to lead the Houston Rockets to a 111-105 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

Harden hit three straight 3-pointers to give the Rockets a 103-100 lead and scored all of Houston's points in a 13-2 run late in the fourth quarter.

Harden topped the 50-point mark for the eighth time this season, compared with 10 such performances from the rest of the league combined. He matched his career-best total set earlier this season against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The NBA's leading scorer surpassed the 30-point mark in the second quarter and the 40-point mark with 9 minutes remaining in the third.

Bryn Forbes led San Antonio with 20 points, while Derrick White added 18 and DeMar DeRozan had 16.

THUNDER 116, RAPTORS 109

TORONTO (AP) - Paul George scored 28 points, Russell Westbrook had 18 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, and Oklahoma City beat Toronto.

Dennis Schroder came off the bench to score 26 points and Jerami Grant had 19 as the Thunder snapped a four-game losing streak and avenged Wednesday's 123-114 home defeat to Toronto.

The Thunder made 20 of 43 shots from 3-point range. Oklahoma City made a season-high 22 3-pointers against the Lakers on Jan. 17.

Kawhi Leonard scored 37 points and Pascal Siakam had 25 for the Raptors, who played without All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry.

BUCKS 116, HEAT 87

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 27 points, had eight rebounds and seven assists after missing two games with a sprained right ankle and helped NBA-leading Milwaukee over Miami.

The win came with a brief scare for the Bucks: Antetokounmpo went down in a mix of players after stealing a pass from Goran Dragic early in the second quarter. Milwaukee immediately called a timeout and after a few moments, Antetokounmpo limped to the bench favoring his right leg. A short rest got him right back on the court.

Khris Middleton added 18 points and 10 assists for a career-best three consecutive games with a double-double for Milwaukee, which improved to (29-6) for the second-best home record in the NBA behind the Denver Nuggets (30-6) and secure their most home victories since 2000-01.

Hassan Whiteside came off the bench to score 14 points, Kelly Olynyk added 13 and Bam Adebayo and Dwyane Wade each had 12.

NUGGETS 111, KNICKS 93

NEW YORK (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 21 points and 17 rebounds, Jamal Murray scored 18 points, and Denver beat New York for its sixth straight victory.

Gary Harris chipped in 14 points for Denver, which moved into a tie with defending champion Golden State for first place in the Western Conference with 11 games remaining for each team.

Will Barton scored 10 of his 12 in the opening quarter as the Nuggets jumped out to a 37-18 lead.

Former Nuggets first-round pick Emmanuel Mudiay had 21 points and rookie Mitchell Robinson added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who have lost their last three games and 11 of 12.

CLIPPERS 110, CAVALIERS 108

CLEVELAND (AP) - Danilo Gallinari scored 27 points and Los Angeles continued its torrid March, edging Cleveland.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 16 points while Lou Williams had 15 for the Clippers, who are 9-1 this month and closing in on a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Kevin Love scored 22 points for Cleveland, which trailed 94-83 early in the third quarter. Jordan Clarkson and rookie Collin Sexton each had 20.

MAGIC 123, GRIZZLIES 119, OT

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Terrence Ross scored 31 points and Evan Fournier had 27, including the game-clinching free throws, and Orlando rallied to beat Memphis.

Nikola Vucevic added 25 points for the Magic, who came from 14 points behind in the fourth quarter to tie it in regulation and go on to win their fourth straight.

Memphis got 29 points from Tyler Dorsey, who replaced Mike Conley in the lineup. Conley didn't play because of what the team called ''general soreness.'' Jonas Valanciunas had 23 points and 24 rebounds, and Justin Holiday scored 22 for the Grizzlies. Chandler Parson had 17 points.

Cal-Irvine 70, Kansas State 64— Anteaters’ first-ever NCAA tournament win; they’ve won 17 games in a row, have wins this year at Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M. Very good defensive team.

Disappointing loss for a veteran K-State team, which made the Elite 8 last year.

Iowa 79, Cincinnati 72— Bearcats led by 13 early on, but Iowa made 11-22 on arc, shot 58% inside arc and won a game where most of the crowd in Columbus was pulling for Cincinnati.

Last seven years, Bearcats are 183-59, 95-31 in conference games, but only 3-7 in NCAA tournament games. Three years ago, Mick Cronin pretended he was interested in the UNLV job so he could get financial concessions from the Cincinnati administration. I’m guessing there is a lot of grumbling going on today in Cincinnati.

Oklahoma 95, Ole Miss 72— Sooners made their first eight shots, led 12-0 quickly and jogged home from there. Oklahoma was just stronger, tougher than the Rebels,

Lon Kruger is the only coach to win an NCAA tournament for five different schools; UNLV, Kansas State, Illinois, Florida, Oklahoma. He also coached the Atlanta Hawks for three years.

Texas Tech 72, Northern Kentucky 57— Horizon League teams lost their last eight first round games; their last win was when Brad Stevens was coaching Butler and they made the national title game two years in a row.

Think about that accomplishment; a team from the Horizon League made the national title game two years in a row!!! No wonder the guy is coaching in the NBA now.

Tennessee 77, Colgate 70— Colgate has a kid named Jordan Burns who was told by his HS football coach that he would never play college basketball— he scored 32 points in this game, as Red Raiders gave Tennessee quite a scare.

One of Colgate’s best players, Rapolas Ivanauskas had pink-eye and didn’t play in the second half. Red Raiders made 15-29 on the arc in a strong performance.

Virginia 71, Gardner-Webb 56— Cavaliers were down 14 in first half of this game, as flashbacks from LY’s loss to UMBC were in everyone’s head.

Reality set in after halftime, when Gardner-Webb led by 6. Has to be a tremendous sigh of relief for Virginia- they play Oklahoma Sunday.

Gardner-Webb won games at Georgia Tech, Wake Forest; they were a pretty strong 16-seed.

Buffalo 91, Arizona State 74— Less than six years ago, Buffalo coach Nate Oats was teaching five math classes a day – algebra, geometry and statistics – at Romulus HS in Michigan. Now he is coaching a top 25 college team and making a boatload of money. He s very good at his job, but how long will he stay in Buffalo?

Buffalo hammered Arizona in the tournament LY, now this; their game with Texas Tech Sunday will be very good.

None of the play-in game winners won their first round game, which is unusual, first time in nine years.

Oregon 72, Wisconsin 54— Wooten has developed into an elite rim protector for the Ducks, who have won nine games in a row. They play #13-seed Cal-Irvine next.

This will be the 13th 2nd round game between a 12 and 13-seed; favorites went 9-3 vs spread in the first 12.

As of right now, the Big 14 is 6-1 in this tournament, pretty strong showing.

Washington 78, Utah State 61— Rough week for the Mountain West, with Nevada/Utah State going down meekly. Last three years, Mountain West teams are 1-5 in first round games.

Great year for the Aggies, though who went 28-7, winning 17 of their last 19 games. It was their first 20+-win season since 2013.

Duke 85, North Dakota State 62— Friday, a guy with too much money at a Caesars sportsbook placed a $150 money-line bet on Duke at -$15,000. When the Blue Devils won, his profit was $1. One American dollar.

Watching games all day Thursday, think I only heard Zion Williamson’s name once all day; once you get away from ESPN, coverage of Duke is a little more even-handed.

Houston 84, Georgia State 55— This game was 15-3 early; teams combined to go 14-52 on the arc. Cougars shot 71.4% inside the arc; last year, Houston lost 64-63 to Michigan in the second round. Now, they play another Big 14 team (Ohio State) in second round Sunday.

Liberty 80, Mississippi State 76— Bulldogs missed their last eight shots from floor, as Liberty wins its first NCAA tournament game. This is first non-play-in win for the Atlantic Sun since Florida Gulf Coast made the Sweet 16 six years ago.

This is 5th time that the #12 seeds went 3-1 in the first round, first time since 2014. The four #5-seeds played a total of six non-conference road games during the regular season.

North Carolina 88, Iona 73— Gaels led this game 38-33 at halftime, little bit of a red flag for the Tar Heels.

Iona has lost 13 straight NCAA tournament games; last time they got out of the first round was 1980, when their coach was Jim Valvano.

Central Florida 73, VCU 58— At first TV timeout, teams were combined 1-16 from floor; VCU led 3-0. UCF missed its first ten shots from floor, then made their next ten. VCU went over 10:00 without scoring a point midway thru game.

This is the first time since 2001 that all four #9-seeds beat the #8-seeds.

Ohio State 62, Iowa State 59— Cyclones lost six of last eight regular season games, then won the Big X tournament last weekend, then laid an egg here. Teams combined to make 11-42 on the arc; five of the ten starters in this game played 38:00+.

Virginia Tech 66, Saint Louis 52— First NCAA tournament win in dozen years for the Hokies; check status of PG Robinson, who played in this game but may have tweaked a leg when he slipped on a wet spot on the floor in second half.

Billikens turned ball over 18 times (-7), made 4-23 on the arc; their bench was 0-7 from the floor.
