    • Lamb hits winning 3, Hornets down Raptors 115-114
      March 24, 2019
      By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Jeremy Lamb banked home a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Charlotte Hornets beat the Toronto Raptors 115-114 on Sunday night for their third straight win.

Toronto looked to have won the game after Kawhi Leonard hit the go-ahead basket with 44 seconds left, then blocked Kemba Walker at the other end.

Charlotte got one final chance after Leonard missed a jumper with 5.8 seconds to go. Pascal Siakam knocked the inbounds pass away from Lamb, who chased the ball into the backcourt before launching the winning shot.

Walker had 15 points and 13 assists and Willy Hernagomez had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets.

Dwayne Bacon made five 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and rookie Miles Bridges scored 16 for Charlotte, which began the day 2 1/2 games behind eighth-place Miami and 1 1/2 games behind ninth-place Orlando in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

      BUCKS 127, CAVALIERS 105

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo showed few signs he was bothered by an ailing right ankle, getting 26 points and 10 rebounds to lift Milwaukee over Cleveland.

Antetokounmpo was listed as questionable after missing two of the three previous games with an ankle sprain. He made 11 of 16 shots and had seven assists in 32 minutes.

Khris Middleton and George Hill added 17 points apiece for the Bucks. Hill was acquired from the Cavaliers in a three-team trade in early December.

Kevin Love had 20 points, Jordan Clarkson 19 and Collin Sexton 18 for Cleveland.

Milwaukee improved to an NBA-best 55-19.

      ROCKETS 113, PELICANS 90

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - James Harden scored 28 points in a little less than 29 minutes, and Houston downed New Orleans.

Chris Paul had 10 points and 13 assists, and Eric Gordon added 18 points for the Rockets, who hit 21 3s in winning for the fifth time in six games to move a game ahead of Portland for the third seed in the Western Conference.

Anthony Davis had 12 points and 10 rebounds in just less than 21 minutes for the short-handed Pelicans, who lost for the eighth time in nine games. Frank Jackson scored 19 and Julius Randle 15 for New Orleans, which fell behind by double digits early and struggled throughout to keep pace with a contending Rockets squad trying to sharpen up for the postseason.

      SPURS 115, CELTICS 96

BOSTON (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 48 points and 13 rebounds, and San Antonio gave short-handed Boston its fourth straight loss.

The Spurs have won 10 of 12 to strengthen their grip on a Western Conference playoff spot. San Antonio (43-31) is eighth in the conference, a half-game behind Oklahoma City and Utah.

Aldridge had his second-highest scoring output of the season. He scored 56 points on Jan. 10 against the Thunder.

Marcus Smart led the Celtics with 14 points. Kyrie Irving had 11 points and 12 assists, but was just 5 of 17 from the field. Irving left the game briefly and went to the locker room in the first quarter with an injury to his left hand, but returned and played the rest of the way with tape on his left ring finger.

      PACERS 124, NUGGETS 88

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 26 of his 35 points in the first half to lead Indiana over Denver.

Myles Turner had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Domantas Sabonis added 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who returned home after dropping four in a row during a West Coast swing.

Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, Will Barton had 15 points and reserve Monte Morris scored 12 points for the Nuggets, who lost for the first time after winning six straight.

Bogdanovic scored every point during a 12-2 run late in the second quarter. He made a 3-pointer with 2:53 remaining in the first half to put the Pacers ahead 52-35.

      CLIPPERS 124, KNICKS 113

NEW YORK (AP) - Danilo Gallinari scored 26 points to extend the best scoring streak of his career, and Los Angeles beat New York for its fifth straight victory.

Lou Williams had 29 points and fellow reserve Montrezl Harrell added 24 to provide their usual potent play off the bench for the Clippers, who began play tied with Oklahoma City and Utah for fifth place in the Western Conference.

Gallinari made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 4:12 remaining to make it 106-104, then hit a pair of free throws before Williams made another 3 to push it to 111-104 with 3:01 to go. The Clippers then pulled away from there to win for the 10th time in 11 games.

Gallinari, the Knicks' first-round pick in 2008, has scored 20 or more in his past nine games.

      WARRIORS 121, PISTONS 114

      LAKERS 111, KINGS 106

          Tweet of the Day
“In the kindest way possible, the man is crazy. He’s got enough energy for like 10 people, all bottled up into one little human.”
Washington Huskies’ G Matisse Thybulle, talking about coach Mike Hopkins

Liberty University is located in Lynchburg, Virginia.

          Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday……

          13) Duke 77, Central Florida 76— When you lose a game like this and your season or career end, you will remember that game for the rest of your life. UCF played its hearts out, the game was there for them to take but it slipped away. Their effort was exceptional.

Duke was 309th in country in 3-point %age before this game; they made 10-25 Sunday, and scored off a missed free throw with 0:09 left to win this interesting game.

Aubrey Dawkins scored 32 points for UCF; this game had to be personal for him, living in Durham until he was 11 years old when his father was an assistant coach at Duke. He played at Michigan, then UCF; he was excellent in this game.

          12) Tennessee 83, Iowa 77 OT— Volunteers led this game 44-19, so if you laid eight points, this was a sad ending. If you had the under, this was a sad ending. If you had Iowa and the over, then be thankful. Tennessee survived and it advances, and that is all that matters this time of year.

For the first time since 1996 the SEC has four teams in the Sweet 16. Tennessee has zero points this season from freshmen, which in modern times is really unusual.

CBS had the father of one of the Iowa players miked during this game; this is a bad idea. Parents should be seen and not heard during these games. Let the kids be the show.

          11) North Carolina 81, Washington 59— Tar Heels are in Sweet 16 for 4th time in five years; this wasn’t a good game. Huskies shot 36.7% from the floor.

Washington is 48-21 in Mike Hopkins’ first two years as coach, so things are looking up for them, though they graduate three starters this spring.

          10) Texas Tech 78, Buffalo 58— Bulls hadn’t lost since February 1st; over last six years, they’re 138-62, 75-31 in MAC games. Five of their top seven players graduate; will coach Nate Oats leave for green$r pa$ture$? Now would be a good time.

Texas Tech moves on to Anaheim, will play Michigan in the next round.

          9) Virginia Tech 67, Liberty 58— Hokies beat Duke 77-72 at home Feb 26; now they get another shot at the Blue Devils Friday night in Washington. Justin Robinson played 29:00 Sunday, so his foot must be OK. He looked a little gimpy late in Friday’s game.

Liberty has a 5-9 freshman named Darius McGhee who played 27:00, and was 5-11 from floor, all 3-pointers, with no assists. Sounds like a good gig, take a 3-pointer every 2:00 or so.

          8) Virginia 63, Oklahoma 51—Starting center Jack Salt isn’t playing much; he has back/ankle issues. Cavaliers are basically playing six guys; Kyle Guy was 0-10 on the arc in this game but Virginia still covered a double digit spread.

Oklahoma finished 20-14 this year, after going 18-14 LY, when they had Trae Young. Go figure.

          7) Houston 74, Ohio State 59— Cougars move on and play Kentucky Friday in Kansas City. Indiana fans who might be watching will be conflicted; they didn’t like Kelvin Sampson much when he was coach of the Hoosiers, but they really dislike Kentucky.

          6) Oregon 73, Cal-Irvine 54— Ducks are in Sweet 16 for third time in last four years; they missed their first ten shots of 2nd half as Irvine came back from down 12 at the half to the game, but Oregon pulled away late. Kenny Wooten had seven blocks; he is a force in the paint.

          5) Coaching carousel:
          — Ron Hunter bolts Georgia State for Tulane. Interesting decision; his Georgia State team would’ve clobbered Tulane this year, but AAC is a step up from the Sun Belt.
          — California fires Wyking Jones; Cal alum Jason Kidd is a possible replacement.

          4) Bryce Harper is from Las Vegas and goes to some UNLV basketball games in the winter; he has posted stuff on social media imploring UNLV to hire Memphis assistant coach Mike Miller as its new basketball coach.

          3) Two baseball players have had ten seasons with 20+ homers and 20+ stolen bases; they are father/son, Bobby and Barry Bonds. Bobby Abreu is next, with nine.

          2) They had 38,031 fans in Anaheim Stadium Sunday night for Dodgers-Angels exhibition game; they drew 23,967 in Oakland for a Giants-A’s game. Baseball season starts Thursday; we’ll have information every day from then until October.

Russell Martin caught all eight innings for the Dodgers, which is really unusual for a spring training game.

          1) Cubs-Colorado exhibition game drew 14,022 fans Saturday night in Arizona. These games are more affordable and to lot of people, their best chance to see big league baseball.

Game of the Night - Brooklyn at Portland (-6, 225), 10:05 ET, NBA TV

If D’Angelo Russell hadn’t delivered one of the 2018-19 NBA season’s most memorable single-quarter performances last Tuesday night, one of the league’s best feel-good stories might be headed for a grim ending. If the Brooklyn Nets hadn’t rallied from a 25-point fourth-quarter deficit in Sacramento, riding a 45-18 explosion over the final 12 minutes to a remarkable 123-121 upset, they would enter this week at .500 instead of two games up.

Brooklyn’s grip on its first playoff appearance since 2015 would be slipping given its remaining schedule and the fact Miami, Orlando and Charlotte have all had excellent stretches over the past week-plus to close the gap in the race for the final available spots in the Eastern Conference. Instead, Russell scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to help fuel a ridiculous comeback, outscoring the Kings by nine points by himself. Sacramento was obviously complicit in aiding the cause since leads of that magnitude don’t get blown without both teams doing their part, but Russell scoring 44 points not only reminded everyone that the Lakers gave up on him prematurely, it also served to provide a cushion between them and a suddenly surging pack of Southeast Division squad that now look like it might come in handy.

The Nets open the week in the No. 7 spot in the East, one game up on the Heat and two up on the Magic, whose four-game winning streak is currently the longest in the conference. Rescuing a game that they were certain to lose six days ago may wind up making the difference between watching the playoffs from home and participating.

Brooklyn takes the floor in Portland on Monday night with only one team currently under .500 remaining on its incredibly difficult schedule going forward. The lone team without a winning record, Miami, may indeed have one by the time it visits Barclays Center on April 10 regular-season finale that could be among that night’s most important contests or might wind up utterly meaningless. It remains to be seen how things play out, but the Heat, Magic and Hornets going on a run since mid-March has turned up the pressure for the Nets, who have visits to Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Indiana following their final game against a Western Conference opponent tonight. Their home games will come against the Celtics, Bucks, Raptors and Heat.

It’s possible that the “Load Management” fairy winds up being kind to Brooklyn by removing a Joel Embiid or Giannis Antetokounmpo from the equation for a night, but if Russell hadn’t hit 10 of 15 shots in the fourth quarter in Sacramento, things would look bleak as a season-long seven-game road trip winds down with games in Portland tonight and Philly on Thursday. The Nets will head back east after their game against the Trail Blazers and are playing with house money at this point, knowing they’ll be bringing at least one win that should’ve eluded them back with them on the long flight home. They beat the Lakers on Friday night as Russell followed up his dominance in Sacramento by finishing with 21 points and 13 assists in a 111-106 victory, helping Brooklyn climb back above .500 for the first time since early this month.

The Nets own tie-breakers over the Magic and Hornets but have gone 1-2 against the Heat, which spells trouble if they haven’t wrapped up a playoff bid by the time the regular-season’s final night rolls around. They can really take a lot of pressure off themselves by stealing this game in Portland, which is possible since this is just their third game in six days and they should have fresh legs.

The Blazers have won six of seven and currently reside in the fourth spot in the Western Conference, one game behind Houston and two games up on the Clippers, their surprise first-round opponent if the season ended today. While they can’t control who they play, Terry Stotts’ team is in control of their ability to open the postseason at home and can still move up past the Rockets, who they own the tie-breaker over due to a 2-1 head-to-head edge. The Nets are one of only three teams with winning records that Portland has to face in a very manageable slate over the next two weeks, though it will have to navigate a couple of back-to-backs and faces a home-and-home with the Nuggets that could help it close the gap in the Northwest Division.

It’s very likely that the Blazers will finish top-four and not out of the question that they can finish as high as No. 2, although that will take a near-perfect run. Following this one, they’ll leave for a four-game road trip that begins Wednesday in Chicago and features stops in Atlanta, Detroit and Minnesota.

C.J. McCollum, who suffered a scary-looking knee strain on March 16, will remain sidelined for this game but is working towards a return and should be in the mix come in April. Rodney Hood, Jake Layman and Seth Curry have been filling in, showing off a level of depth that Portland hasn’t enjoyed in a while. It will be looking to close out a 4-0 homestand after victories over the Pacers, Mavs and Pistons without McCollum as Damian Lillard has averaged 30.3 points and 12 assists to fuel the results. The Trail Blazers are 11-4 since the All-Star break.

Portland defeated Brooklyn 113-99 on Feb. 21 in the only meeting between the teams this season. It out-rebounded the Nets 60-49 and got 27 points and 12 rebounds from Jusuf Nurkic, who has teamed with Enes Kanter to give the Blazers a formidable center combination that has helped wear down defenses over the past few weeks. Over his past seven games, Lillard has shot nearly 47 percent (28-for-60) from 3-point range and has made six from beyond the arc in each of the last two.

His duel with Russell highlights a light four-game night in the NBA but figures to be worth staying up for. The Nets will be without shooting guard Allen Crabbe (knee) but are otherwise at full strength. The ‘under’ has prevailed in eight of the last 10 games involving Brooklyn. Portland has won six of seven in the series, scoring at least 112 points in each of its victories. The lone Nets’ win did come at the Moda Center on Nov. 10 of last season as Russell scored a team-high 21 points in a 101-97 upset.

                Best of the Rest

Philadelphia at Orlando, 7:05 p.m. ET, NBA TV:
The Magic put their four-game winning streak on the line against the visiting 76ers, hoping to even the season series in order to keep the pressure on Miami in the race for the Southeast Division and the final playoff spot in the East. Orlando visits the Heat on Tuesday night to open a crucial four-game road trip, so securing a victory in its 39th home game of the season carries increased importance. Philadelphia will be the last team with a winning record to come through Amway Center this regular-season, so pulling off an upset as a two-point underdog would go a long way in keeping them in the postseason mix.

The Sixers are the first team with a winning record Orlando has seen since it lost a Philadelphia on March 5. J.J. Redick shot 8-for-9 from 3-point range to help take down the team that drafted him despite the absence of Joel Embiid. The Magic has gone 5-2 against their sub-.500 competition and has won five straight home games, last losing on Feb. 22. Philly lost in Atlanta 127-125 on Saturday night and will be looking to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since March 6 and only the fourth time in 2019. Orlando has been among the NBA’s top defensive teams since the All-Star break, so it will be interesting to see how they hold up against a playoff team that’s at full strength after saving its season with an overtime win over the Grizzlies on Saturday, rallying from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Oklahoma City at Memphis, 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Thunder are even with Utah for the No. 6 seed, a half-game behind the Clippers for the fifth spot and a half-game up on the Spurs, who are currently eighth. The Western Conference’s playoff teams are all set, but OKC will want no part of a first-round series with the Warriors and will have to win in order to ensure it stays out of the final two spots since Golden State figures to finish first or second. Defeating the Raptors in Toronto on Friday night snapped a four-game skid and puts the Thunder on track to finish strong since six of their final eight games will come at home in Oklahoma City. Winning in Memphis should be made easier by the fact guard Avery Bradley (shin) is sidelined and Joakim Noah (knee soreness) isn’t likely to play. Dennis Schroder is expected to participate despite rolling his ankle against the Raps.

Phoenix at Utah, 9:05 p.m. ET:
The Jazz rolled past Phoenix 114-97 when the teams played less than two weeks ago on March 13, getting 26 points on Donovan Mitchell. Rudy Gobert grabbed 20 boards as Utah won the battle of the boards 57-35. The line is hovering around 15 points here as Utah opens a four-game homestand as it looks to chase down Portland and Houston in the race for homecourt advantage out West. Utah is at full strength outside of the absence of backup point guard Dante Exum, while the Suns list Josh Jackson as questionable and have declared Kelly Oubre (thumb) out for the season. Forward T.J. Warren and guard Tyler Johnson remain out, so look for rookies De’Anthony Melton and Mikal Bridges to play major minutes. Utah has beaten Phoenix by a combined 45 points this season, getting averages of 17 points and 16 rebounds from Gobert, who has made life difficult for No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton.

                      • Booker scores 59, but Jazz rout Suns 125-92
                        March 26, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Rudy Gobert scored a season-high 27 points and set the single-season NBA dunk record to fuel the Utah Jazz to a 125-92 victory Monday night over the Phoenix Suns, who got 59 points from Devin Booker.

Booker topped his previous season high of 55, set in December in a triple-overtime loss to Washington. The fourth-year guard made five 3-pointers and shot 19 for 34 despite drawing several double-teams as the Jazz sought to prevent him from reaching 60 points. He also made 16 of 17 free throws.

Derrick Favors and Ricky Rubio each had 18 points and Joe Ingles added 14 as the Jazz won for the seventh time in their last eight games.

                        MAGIC 119, 76ERS 98

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Orlando held Philadelphia without a field goal for a stretch of nearly 12 minutes.

Evan Fournier scored 24 points for the Magic, who outscored the 76ers 30-5 over a second-half stretch in which Philadelphia missed 15 straight shots.

The Magic completed their first 5-0 homestand in franchise history and moved a half-game behind Miami in chasing the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They visit the Heat on Tuesday.

Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

                        GRIZZLIES 115, THUNDER 103

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Bruno Caboclo scored a career-high 24 points, Tyler Dorsey added 21 and Memphis beat Oklahoma City.

Delon Wright finished with 18 points and a career-best 13 assists for the Grizzlies. Jonas Valanciunas added 18 points and 14 rebounds.

All five starters finished in double figures as the Grizzlies ended a two-game slide.

Paul George led the Thunder with 30 points and 12 rebounds, while Dennis Schroder added 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Russell Westbrook finished with 16 points and seven assists, but was just 6 of 20 from the field and missed five of his six 3-point attempts.

                            Tweet of the Day
“To us, when it’s your player and he’s played for you and you know exactly what he is, we feel more comfortable paying our own players. Is that to say we don’t want to sign a player in free agency? No. But it’s got to be at a price point that we think is beneficial for both parties.”
                            Colts’ GM Chris Ballard

                            Tuesday’s quiz
Who is the oldest player in the major leagues right now?

                            Monday’s quiz
2000 was the last time a Big 14 basketball team won the national championship, when Michigan State won. Maryland won in 2002, but they were in the ACC back then.

                            Sunday’s quiz
In 1990, Michigan lost 149-115 to Loyola Marymount, the year after it won the national championship, the worst loss ever by a defending national champ.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                            13) Duke beat Central Florida by a point Sunday. In the 25:00 Tacko Fall played, UCF was +16; they were -17 in the 15:00 he didn’t play. Pretty telling stat.

                            12) Denver Broncos suggested the NFL borrow the AAF’s version of onside kicks where a team can go for an “onside kick” by running a 4th-and-12 play from their own 28-yard line after a score, if they’re down by 17+ points, or trailing with 5:00 or less left in the game.

After the 4th-and-12 play, the game just continues from there.

NFL competition committee voted 7-1 in favor of this rule; Giants’ owner John Mara was the one vote against it, saying “What are we, the Arena Football League?”

24 of the 32 owners would have to vote “Yes” for it to become an actual rule.

                            11) From MetsMerizedOnline.com:

Mets owner Fred Wilpon is buying back a 12% stake of the team for about $180M, which values the Mets at about $1.5B, a lot less than the $2.1B Forbes magazine valued it at last year. If these numbers are right, thats a 28% decrease in value, in only one year.

The Wilpons now own 68% of the team, which is bad news for Mets fans everywhere.

                            10) Bears-Packers will be the Thursday night game in Week 1 of the NFL this season; this is the NFL’s 100th season, and Green Bay-Chicago is the league’s oldest rivalry.

New England will open at home on Sunday Night Football.

                            9) Milwaukee Brewers are playing couple of exhibition games against the Blue Jays in Montreal this week, but Ryan Braun forgot his passport, so he won’t be there. Whoops.

                            8) Ron Darling was talking on the Mets’ game the other day about how the Seattle Mariners have it worse than any other baseball team, as far as travel goes, since Seattle is way up thee in the Pacific Northwest, pretty far away from all their opponents, except Oakland.

He was talking about Robinson Cano being 36 years old and how many games he will play this season. Darling said Cano should still be able to play 140 or so games, since the Mets’ travel will be a lot less arduous than the Mariners’ was.

                            7) Showtime has a 4-part series called Action airing this month, about the growth of legalized gambling. In the first show, a well-known professional gambler named Bill Krackomberger is profiled; they show him betting thousands of dollars ($3,300 a game) on several NFL games, yet he says that he probably cannot name 15 players in the NFL.

A friend confirmed that this is probably true. I’ve known of this guy for years as a sharp bettor; it is amazing to me that a guy can win betting the NFL but can’t at least name every starting QB int the league.

                            6) Johnny Manziel made his AAF debut for Memphis Sunday, going 3-5 for 48 yards passing, and running ball twice for 20 yards in his backup role. Starter Brandon Silvers won the game for Memphis, though, leading the game-tying drive in the last minute of regulation, then

Silvers, who played college ball at Troy, was 24-35 for 266 yards and two TDs.

That was the first overtime game in AAF history, by the way.

                            5) One thing I won’t miss about spring training ending; games where both teams are wearing the same color jersey.

                            4) When a player breaks his bat in a major league game, they actually sell the bat at concession stands in the stadium, and broken bats ain’t cheap.

I was in Philadelphia couple years ago, and was looking at the game-used items they sell there; jerseys, baseballs, bats, bases. Made the mistake of grabbing a bat by the barrel and got pine tar all over my hands. Sticky stuff.

                            3) In the last two weeks, Auburn won six games, counting the SEC tournament and then their two NCAA tournament wins. In the previous 13 years combined, Auburn had won a total of seven postseason games.

                            2) Jazz 125, Suns 92— Devin Booker scored 59 points in this one-sided game; Jimmer Fredette went 1-10 in 14:00 off the bench in his first NBA game in three years.

Booker stayed in the game in the last 0:20 with the Suns down 33, trying to get 60 points, but Utah fouled someone else intentionally so that he couldn’t get the chance.

                            1) If you follow comments that Celtics players/coaches have made this season, sounds like they’re all having a miserable season. Boston is 43-31, right now they’re the #5-seed in the East but you get the impression they won’t be too unhappy when the season ends, and they can all go their separate ways.
