  • Mercury alone in 1st with win over Mystics
    June 30, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Brittney Griner scored 24, DeWanna Bonner added 23 and the Phoenix Mercury stayed alone into first place with an 84-74 win over the Washington Mystics on Saturday night.

Yvonne Turner hit a 3-pointer at the end of the shot clock that made it 80-74 for the Mercury (13-5) with 36.6 seconds left and stopped a 10-3 Washington run. The Mystics (10-6) turned it over on their next possession and Diana Taurasi and Turner each added a pair of free throws to seal the victory.

Phoenix took the lead for good with a 9-0 run in the middle of the third quarter.

Turner finished with 12 points for the Mercury, who have won three straight.

Elena Delle Donne had 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Mystics. Washington had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Sunday’s List of 13; Happy Canada Day, everyone!!!!

        13) Modern baseball; Friday night in Oakland, the Indians brought in lefty Oliver Perez to face a lefty hitter with a man on second. Predictably, the A’s sent up a righty hitter instead and Terry Francona ordered the righty hitter intentionally walked.

With another righty up next, Francona took Perez out and brought a righty in, creating the unique situation where a pitcher is removed from the game without throwing a pitch or even a pickoff throw— technically, the intentional walk counts as a batter faced.

        12) As the owner of a fantasy baseball team, I try and find players wherever/whenever; Marlins brought up a pitcher named Pablo Lopez to make his MLB debut Saturday.

Lopez starts the game by striking out Brandon Nimmo on three pitches; I scramble to get to MILB.com to look up his minor league history. Before I find his page, Jose Bautista homers to left field, then Michael Conforto gets a hit. My enthusiasm wanes.

        11) Lopez is 22 years old. looks like he was rushed to the majors; this was his first season in AA, and he was really good, going 1-2, 0.62 in eight starts in the AA Southern League.

So the Marlins promoted him to AAA and he was 1-1, 3.38 in four starts there. 62.1 IP above A ball is a little bit fast to get to the big leagues.

Lopez wound up throwing six innings, allowing only two solo homers; a solid debut for the kid.

        10) Hunter Wendelstedt umpired the plate at Wrigley Field Saturday; not to say it was hot in Chicago, but he umpired with a wet towel draped around his neck. Never saw that before, but it seems like it was the smart thing to do.

        9) Astros are 10-15 in one-run games, 45-15 in their other games.
Mariners are 25-11 in one-run games, 28-20 in their other games.

        8) Kansas City Royals are 13-15 vs lefty starting pitchers, 12-42 vs righty starters.
Toronto Blue Jays are 11-21 vs lefty starters, 28-22 vs righthanders.

        7) Enes Kanter has played seven years in the NBA, scoring 11.7 ppg; last three years, he scored 12.7, 14.3, 14.1 ppg, all while playing 21.0, 21.3, 25.8 mpg.

Kanter has earned $72,889,846 in his NBA career, will tack on an additional $18,622,514 this coming season. In his last two seasons with the Thunder (2015-16, 20-16-17), he started one freaking game!!!

Kanter shot at least 54.5% from the floor the last four years. He must be a good teammate.

        6) Colorado Rockies called up OF Raimel Tapia, optioned their Opening Day starting pitcher Jon Gray, to AAA Albuquerque. Tapia is a leadoff-type hitter; will they give him a chance to play every day? Hope so, I’ve had him stashed on my fantasy team for three years now.

        5) Star pitchers Jacob deGrom and Corey Kluber both played college baseball at Stetson.

deGrom played shortstop his first two years for the Hatters; he hit .243 and .258, then added pitching to his resume, going 4-5, 4.48 in 17 games (82.1 IP), while hitting .263. He pitched one inning in those first two seasons.

        4) Mets’ TV guy Gary Cohen is very good at calling games and he wants the Mets to win but he is fair and questions why certain things happen.

Mets have a 22-year old 1B named Dominic Smith who hasn’t started the last three games against righty starters, even though Smith bats lefty. Cohen openly asked on the air why Smith wasn’t starting— “If he isn’t starting, then why is he here?”

You don’t get stuff like that on most local baseball broadcasts.

Smith is hitting .203 in his first 230 major league PA; he went to Juniper Serra HS in California, same high school that Tom Brady and Barry Bonds went to.

        3) Lakers’ G Lonzo Ball has a torn meniscus in his left knee, is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

        2) Reds’ pitcher Michael Lorenzen homered again Saturday, now has three pinch-hit HRs in his career. The only other pitcher to do that in the last 60 years: Gary Peters, who hit four from 1964-71, playing in the pre-DH era for the White Sox, Red Sox.

        1) Happy Canada Day to all our friends north of the border!!!

        • Aces, Sparks to mix it up again

Something just might be cooking in the 100-degree heat in the desert and the rest of the WNBA might want to take notice, especially after Friday night.

If the Aces were looking for a signature moment in their first year in Las Vegas, Bill Laimbeer's squad found it with Friday's 94-78 dismantling of the Los Angeles Sparks.

A telling sign of just how far the Aces (6-11) have come since moving from San Antonio, where the Stars won only 15 games in the past two seasons (and lost 53 times), will come Sunday afternoon at Staples Center in Los Angeles when the Aces and Sparks meet again.

The Sparks (11-5) were coming off a loss in Seattle to the Storm on Thursday night and the schedule played right into the Aces' hands.

"We wanted to push the pace and we did throughout the whole course of the game," Laimbeer said. "Our game is we want to push, especially when we knew they were coming from Seattle on a back-to-back with tired legs. We're going to take advantage of that."

          The Sparks made no excuses.

"We don't make any excuses when playing back-to-backs," Los Angeles coach Brian Agler said. "We are who we are and (Friday night) that was not very good. Our defensive effort was substandard."

The Sparks came into the game sitting atop the WNBA standings.

Before Friday's defeat, the Sparks were allowing only 75.5 points per game and the Aces were giving up more than 85.

Not having injured Nneka Ogwumike (back) for a third straight game might have made a difference as rookie A'ja Wilson had her way -- again.

Wilson is the third leading scorer in the league at 20.7 points per game. With boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oakland (soon-to-be Las Vegas) Raiders owner Mark Davis at courtside, Wilson produced 29 points and nine rebounds.

More pleasing to Laimbeer was the play of last year's No. 1 pick, Kelsey Plum, who compiled 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

"I've kept her in a box for a while now and I wanted to make sure that she ran our team the way I wanted it to," Laimbeer said. "I'm getting more comfortable with her now to give her a little more freedom to go out there and create. We know she's always going to be a good shooter, but I'm looking for a bit more offensive from her."

Friday's effort was Plum's best as a pro. And that can't be good news for Las Vegas opponents.

"This is a huge win for us," Plum said. "We've had moments where we've been close like the Dallas and Chicago games. But to be able to close out a game against the best team in the league is something that I'm really proud of."

Sustaining that kind of play against the league's elite teams on the road will be the key for a young team like the Aces.

Los Angeles is 7-1 at Staples this season. The Aces are 3-6 on the road. The Sparks are happy to leave the heat behind and get back to playing winning hoops.

"We've lost some games and I think it's just getting back to practice," said Candace Parker, who was held to seven points on Friday. "We have to figure it out watching film and figure it out of the court as we go. We're going to be happy to go home for this two-game homestand and hopefully get back on a roll."

          • Lynx carry six-game win streak into road matchup with Wings

The defending champion Minnesota Lynx are the hottest team in the WNBA with a six-game winning streak that includes a June 19 victory over the Dallas Wings, their opponent Sunday at College Park Center.

The 91-83 win was Minnesota's second of the season over Dallas, with both games played at the Lynx's Target Center.

The Wings (7-7) get another shot the Lynx (9-6), this time at home and with confidence because of how they played against Minnesota in the last matchup.

Dallas nearly erased a 21-point deficit in the second half, cutting the lead to 87-83 on a Skylar Diggs-Smith 3-pointer, but Minnesota converted its last eight free-throw attempts to secure the win.

"We stepped it up on defense, got that look out of our eyes and stepped it up," Diggs-Smith said. "When we play like that, I think we're one of the hardest teams to play with. When we're able to get into our game, running our cuts hard and playing desperate, that's how we've got to be for 40 minutes."

In a marquee post matchup, Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles had 19 points and 17 rebounds, and Dallas' Liz Cambage finished with 16 points, nine boards and five assists.

"Same old, same old," Fowles said when asked about playing Cambage. "A lot of bodies there getting banged up, hit, very physical, but I wouldn't want it any other way."

Dallas returns home after a two-game road trip in which it lost to Los Angeles and defeated Las Vegas.

The Wings ranked third in the league in scoring at 84.7 points per game, but an abundance of turnovers has affected their overall flow. They are second in the league in turnovers, averaging 15.1 per game.

In a previous matchup with Minnesota, Dallas committed 22 turnovers.

"We just didn't take care of the ball when we needed to, especially in that first quarter (when Minnesota took a 25-10 lead)," Dallas coach Fred Williams said.

Minnesota's defense will be tested by Dallas' potent scoring, but the Lynx appear to be prepared, ranking third in the WNBA in points allowed (78.4 per game). Minnesota is also tough on the boards, ranking third in rebounds per game (36.3).

In an 85-74 win over visiting Atlanta on Friday, Minnesota was led by Maya Moore's 24 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and Fowles' 13 points and 15 rebounds.

            • Starving Fever hope to be nightmare for Dream

Indiana knows it can beat the Atlanta Dream because it has done it once this season in what has become the Fever's only win through the first half of 2018.

But knowing and doing are two different things. Atlanta will get a chance to avenge Indiana's win, and clinch a tie in the season series, when the teams square off Sunday afternoon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis for the third of four regular-season meetings.

The Fever (1-15) host the Dream after getting blown out Friday by the surging Phoenix Mercury 95-77 in a game that was not as close as that runaway score indicates.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 19 points in its fifth straigh loss. Victoria Vivians, Erica Wheeler and Kayla Alexander contributed 10 points each for the Fever.

At the end of the first half, Indiana left the court with more fouls (16) than made field goals (15). The Fever also faced a 17-point deficit after the Mercury used a decisive 14-2 run in the second quarter to run away.

Indiana went just 4 of 17 from the field in the second quarter

"It was our rhythm and the movement of the ball. It was stagnant," Vivians said. "Once we're stagnant, we'll take bad shots and they'll get easy layups off those shots."

Phoenix scored the first seven points of the third quarter and eventually built its lead to 32 points before cruising home.

Mitchell knows the Fever can't afford to lose in those key moments of the game.

"It's all about pivotal moments, as Coach Pokey (Chatman) says." Mitchell said. "It's crucial that we kind of like stick with it throughout the course of the game and not have those downward little spirals. Same song and dance. Gotta pick it up where we can."

The Dream (7-8) dropped a hard-fought battle at Minnesota on Friday, falling 85-74. Imani McGee-Stafford led the Dream with 15 points, and Damaris Dantas and Brittney Sykes finished with 14 points apiece.

Atlanta is now 3-6 on the road. The Dream-Fever season series is tied at 1-1, with both teams winning at home.

The Dream have lost four of their past five games and there is no rest for the weary. Atlanta's game at Indiana will be its eighth on the road in 10 games and the team will have traveled more than 9,200 miles during the 3 1/1-week stretch.

Atlanta guard Renee Montgomery said getting through this tough stretch of games is about "rest and recovery."

"At this point in the season, it's hard to get a lot of scouting in, and it's hard to get a lot of anything in," Montgomery said. "Basically, you just have to be focused when you come into the game about sets that everyone runs and just legs.

"Once it gets to a point in the season where we're traveling a lot, you come back and you play a high-octane offense, it's really about recovery."

The Fever are 14-8 all time against the Dream at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, having won the past four meetings in Indy.

              • Sky, Liberty close out back- to-back in Chicago

The Chicago Sky will go for their fourth win in a row when they host the New York Liberty on Sunday evening in the back end of a home-and-home series at Wintrust Arena near downtown Chicago.

Chicago (6-9) is coming off a hard-fought 103-99 win over the Liberty on Friday in White Plains, N.Y.

The Sky return home playing their best basketball in weeks. The young, streaky team opened the season with back-to-back wins, then dropped nine of 10 games before reviving its playoff chances.

Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot is hopeful the momentum will continue at home.

"It's a good road win for us," Vandersloot told reporters after scoring 14 points in the victory over the Liberty on Friday. "Good teams win with a lot of people (stepping) up. Those are the types of wins you really enjoy on the road.

"We play this team in less than 48 hours. We've got to regroup and build off this one."

New York (4-11) knows it needs a better performance on defense in order to avoid another tough loss. The team has dropped five consecutive games to plunge toward the bottom of the WNBA standings. The five-game skid marks the longest losing streak for New York since 2014.

Forward Tina Charles scored a game-high 24 points to give the Liberty a chance at a late comeback Friday. Veteran guard Epiphanny Prince added 21 points, but the Sky held firm with two free throws in the final seconds.

Charles said she and her teammates needed to stay mentally focused.

"When you're in the midst of a season not going your way, you can't focus on the frustrating parts, just the good things that come out of it," Charles said to reporters. "At the end of the day, we need to get stops. ...

"Down the stretch, we need to focus on the defensive end. Offensively, things are starting to come together. It looks like we're getting over that hump. (Prince) is coming into her own."

New York will need to focus on stopping Sky guard Allie Quigley, who leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game. Rookie Diamond DeShields is averaging 13.7 points, and Cheyenne Parker (10.7) and Stefanie Dolson (10.0) also are scoring in double digits.

Charles leads New York with 19.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Kia Nurse (10.3 points) and Prince (9.3 points) round out the top three in scoring.

Liberty forward Marissa Coleman has missed the past three games because of a sprained right ankle, and her status for Sunday night's game is uncertain. She is averaging 5.8 points and 3.2 rebounds.

                • High-scoring Sun, Storm to meet again

The last time the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm met, it was a career night.

                  For more than one player.

The Storm won the first of three meetings this season 103-92 on June 15 in Seattle as Natasha Howard scored a career-high 25 points.

Not to be outdone, Connecticut's Chiney Ogwumike scored a career-best 30 points on 13-for-16 shooting and teammate Jasmine Thomas tied her career high with 29 points.

The two highest-scoring teams in the WNBA (the Sun are averaging 88.9 points per game and the Storm 87.4) will meet again Sunday at KeyArena in Seattle.

The previous meeting was the opener of a five-game trip for the Sun (9-6). They finally returned home and beat the Indiana Fever 101-89 on Wednesday as Ogwumike and Jonquel Jones each scored 21 points, but are now embarking on a four-game trip that will also take them to Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas to take on the Sparks, Mercury and Aces.

"The schedule that we have this year is really tough," Sun center Brionna Jones said. "It's really compact, but I think everybody is going through the same things. The last few games (before Wednesday) lacked focus, but I think we're ready to pick in back up and get back on track."

The Storm (11-5) are coming off an 81-72 victory Thursday at home against Los Angeles. Breanna Stewart, the league's leading scorer with 22.6 points per game, scored 20 of her 27 points in the second half and point guard Sue Bird had 10 points and 11 assists.

Bird made a pull-up jumper and a 3-pointer before assisting on back-to-back baskets during an opening 20-7 run and Seattle never trailed, though the Sparks tied the score twice in the fourth quarter.

"We can't get ahead of ourselves. We may be winning but we still have a lot of work to do," Bird said. "We had a lull in the third quarter. Basketball is a game of runs but you still want to limit them and even though we were up 10, you want to be up 14 to 18, you don't want to let a team come back. I think that there is always a lesson, win or lose."

Storm coach Dan Hughes said he thought the playoff-type atmosphere against the Sparks could help his team in the future.

"I think it imitates what we've got to become good at. As we get into the second half of the season and as you get yourselves in the playoffs, (the games) are going to be like this," he said. "And you are going to be staring at a game where you're in the fourth quarter, it's a tie score and whether it's a nine-minute game, a five-minute game or a three-minute game, you got to have the poise to finish, and I thought we showed good poise."

The Storm (12-5) pulled away with a 21-2 run to lead 72-49 on Jordin Canada's driving layup with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter. The Sun (9-7) got no closer than the final score from there.

The teams entered the game as the top two scoring offenses in the WNBA. Connecticut's 70 points matched a season low. The Sun were still missing Alyssa Thomas to a shoulder injury and Courtney Williams was out for personal reasons.

Alex Bentley led Connecticut with 15 points. The Sun have lost six of eight after a 7-1 start to the season.
