Charles scores 18 points in 4th, Liberty top Wings 94-89
May 29, 2018

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) Tina Charles scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and New York beat the Dallas Wings 94-89 on Tuesday night for Liberty coach Katie Smith's first victory.

New York was outscored 11-0 to start the game and trailed until Shavonte Zellous scored in the paint to tie it at 76 with 3:58 remaining in the game. Charles gave New York its first lead on their next possession and she finished with 18 points in the quarter.

Zellous added 19 points with nine assists for New York (1-2). Charles has seven career games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Elizabeth Cambage had 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Wings (2-3). Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 20 points with five 3-pointers and seven assists.

Diggins-Smith made four 3-pointers in the first quarter and she finished the half with 16 points to help the Wings build a 46-37 lead.

McCoughtry hits game-winning 3, Dream rally past Lynx
May 29, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Angel McCoughtry made a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left and the Atlanta Dream closed on a 13-4 run to beat the Minnesota Lynx 76-74 on Tuesday night.

McCoughtry drove the lane, passed it to Tiffany Hayes and went to the corner for a wide open 3-pointer. Maya Moore had a 3-pointer hit off the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Hayes paced Atlanta (2-2) with 20 points and McCoughtry scored 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. The Dream snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series.

Rebekkah Brunson sank a baseline jumper to give Minnesota a 74-69 lead, but Jessica Breland answered with a layup in traffic at the other end. Atlanta won a jump ball with 45.4 seconds left and McCoughtry hit a pull-up jumper to make it 74-73. Breland blocked a shot to set up McCoughtry's winner.

Moore scored 18 points for Minnesota (2-3) and Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Loyd scores 27, Storm top short-handed Mystics 81-77
May 29, 2018

SEATTLE (AP) Jewell Loyd scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Breanna Stewart added 25 points and the Seattle Storm beat the Washington Mystics 81-77 on Tuesday night.

Seattle passed it around the perimeter in the closing seconds and Loyd was left wide open for a baseline jumper to extend their lead to 80-77. Washington inbounded it with 6.4 seconds left but Natasha Howard intercepted a pass and sealed it at the free-throw line.

Howard finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Seattle (4-1). Loyd was 10 of 18 from the field with three of the Storm's seven 3-pointers.

Kristi Toliver scored 17 of her 20 points in the first half and Tianna Hawkins added 17 for Washington (4-1). Myisha Hines-Allen had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Washington was without star Elena Delle Donne. She played only 13 minutes on Sunday because of dehydration.

13) Guy at South Point Casino Tuesday bet $90,000 on Golden State to win the NBA Finals; if they do win, he wins $10,000. Risking $90K to win $10K makes for a long couple weeks until the deed is actually done.

12) Houston Rockets missed 27 straight 3-pointers Monday night; read somewhere on the Interweb that their odds of missing 27 straight 3-pointers was something like 70,000-1.

During the time the Rockets were going 0-27, Golden State was 13-23 behind the arc.

11) Dodgers’ first 25 wins this season were won by 15 different pitchers, which is kind of hard to believe. Had to double-check that, but it is true.

10) When major league teams play a doubleheader, the two home plate umpires do not work the other game.

9) World Series of Poker started Tuesday; will be 78 events from now until July 17. Few years ago, I was staying at the Rio and walked around the World Series for a half hour or so- wasn’t much fun watching other people play cards.

Very quiet room though; this huge floor of a convention center filled with card tables- the only sound you hear is chips clicking together.

8) Why people buy “conference championship” t-shirts? Why? Wait to see if your team wins the league championship; thats the t-shirt you want. If your team loses in the finals, then you go back and buy the conference champ t-shirt, if you want.

6) Giants’ P Dereck Rodriguez made his MLB last night in Denver, after Jeff Samardzija left the game after the first inning with a shoulder issue. Dereck is the son of Hall of Fame catcher Pudge Rodriguez.

5) Mets put Noah Syndergaard on the DL Tuesday morning with a sprained ligament in a finger on his pitching hand, then oft-injured Steven Matz left Tuesday night’s game with an injury, apparently a blister on his pitching hand.

4) Glad to hear the 76ers’ coach Brett Brown got a 3-year contract extension; he coached thru lot of losing seasons but then finally got to enjoy success this season. Good for him.

3) Atlanta Braves started eight different pitchers in their last 11 games.

2) Going into Tuesday’s game, Dodgers had been without Clayton Kershaw for 24 games. In those games, LA’s starting pitchers had a 2.98 ERA, 1.12 WHIP.

Toliver, Mystics hand Mercury 3rd straight loss
May 30, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) Kristi Toliver scored 30 points, Tianna Hawkins had 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and the Washington Mystics beat the Phoenix Mercury 103-95 on Wednesday night.

Rookie Ariel Atkins added a season-best 21 points in her first start for Washington (5-1), which was without star Elena Delle Donne for a second straight game due to an illness. Toliver made 10 of 16 shots from the field, and the Mystics went 11 of 17 from 3-point range.

Toliver scored 15 points in the first half to help Washington build a 49-43 lead. The Mystics started the second half on a 6-0 run and led by at least 10 points throughout the fourth quarter.

Brittney Griner scored 27 points on 13-of-16 shooting and DeWanna Bonner added 25 points for Phoenix (2-3), which has lost three straight. Diana Taurasi picked up three fouls in the first half and finished with nine points.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) Didn’t write about this yesterday because I was trying to fully grasp whats going on, but there are strange doings on social media this week. Apparently 76ers’ GM Bryan Colangelo was discovered to be running five burner Twitter accounts, which did various things that a GM shouldn’t be doing, like disclosing players’ medical information and ripping his predecessor.

12) 76ers put out a statement saying they’re investigating the whole thing.

Joel Embiid said “I talked to him and he said that he didn’t say that. He called me just to deny the story. Gotta believe him until proven otherwise. If true though, that would be really bad.”

One thing no one in Philly wants to do is tick off Embiid.

11) There are 30 teams in the NBA- their draft is two rounds, so that is 60 guys who will get drafted in late June.

Last I heard, 77 kids have bolted college early for the NBA; when you add in foreign players and international players, going to be lot of disappointed kids after the draft. G-League draft will have lot of recognizable names in it.

10) Cleveland Browns’ DB Demarious Randall tweeted this week that if the Cavaliers beat Golden State in the NBA Finals, he would buy everyone who re-tweeted his tweet a Cavaliers’ jersey (they cost around $100).

11) A televangelist from Louisiana says Jesus has asked his followers to buy a new private jet- this one costs a mere $54M. The guy already has three other jets.

10) Shohei Ohtani in day games: 4-0, 2.18, Angels won all five of his daytime starts.

9) Former NFL coach Mike Martz will coach the San Diego team in the new AAF next spring, which means San Diego will score a lot of points and waste a lot of timeouts.

8) Joe Namath turned 75 years old this week; QB of the Jets who won Super Bowl III that made the AFL-NFL merger happen. Namath became a hideously overrated player because he won a title for a team in New York City- the playoff games he won that year were the only playoff games he ever won, but he also turned out to be a really nice guy who is always pleasant with fans and is a really good ambassador for the game.

7) There was an odd play early in the Phillies-Dodgers game Thursday; Mikael Franco tried to score from second on a single, the throw bounced away from the catcher, but Franco never touched home plate, in fact, he never came close to touching it.

No one said anything, the run scored and the game went on.

6) Carlos Torres was the ump for the Rays-A’s game Thursday; someone needs to tell him to call some damn strikes. He was squeezing both pitchers badly; the game is better if the ball is in play more. Get the hitters swinging the bat.

5) Baseball players get hurt a lot:
— Cardinals P Alex Reyes (lat strain) goes on the DL
— Clayton Kershaw will have an MRI on his back tomorrow.

4) St. John’s poached Auburn transfer Mustapha Heron; with the Big East expected to be a little down next winter, Red Storm could make some noise in conference for first time in a while.

3) Phillies 2, Dodgers 1— Bad news for LA; Clayton Kershaw’s back tightened up during this game and he’ll have an MRI on it.

2) Warriors 124, Cavaliers 114— Golden State wins Game 1 in OT, overcoming Lebron James’ 51 points— he also had 8 rebounds, 8 assists.

This game didn’t sell out in Oakland, which is surprising. Golden State won, which isn’t surprising.

1) JR Smith rebounded a missed free throw in a tie game with 0:04.7 left; instead of shooting the ball, he dribbled it out, thinking Cleveland was ahead by a point. Whoops.

Smith was -20 in his 38:00 on the court, the worst plus/minus of anyone in the game. In the 15:00 Smith sat out, the Cavaliers were +7.

A guy who has played 13 years in the NBA didn’t know the score of a tie game with 0:04.7 left. That not good, especially if you bet the under.
