      Friday’s 6-pack

      — Utah Valley coach Mark Pope signed a 2-year deal to stay with the Wolverines.

      — In their last eight home games, Mets are 1-32 with men in scoring position.

      — Patriots’ WR Julian Edelman is getting a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.

      — Patriots play Detroit in Week 3, by the way. Lions are now coached by Matt Patricia, who has been the New England defensive coordinator the last few years.

      — Charles Barkley got to ride in the Goodyear Blimp Thursday.

      — In their last 10 games, Dodger starting pitchers threw 35 innings, relievers 54.

      Quote of the Day
“TO is making a mistake. This is the greatest individual honor a football player can achieve. Many of the greatest players of all time have had to wait their turn. They have then accepted with humility and class. It’s not about how you got there, it’s that you made it.”
Tedy Bruschi, talking about Terrell Owens skipping his Hall of Fame enshrinement

      Friday’s quiz
Where did Terrell Owens play college football?

      Thursday’s quiz
Roy Hobbs played for the New York Knights in The Natural.

      Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Kevin Costner played the GM of the Cleveland Browns.

      **************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

      13) When Kevin Durant moved from the Thunder to Golden State as a free agent, he ruined the NBA playoffs. At least for a while.

Competitive balance is what makes sports interesting to watch; it is why the NFL is so damn popular, any team can win from year to year. The NBA is sorely lacking that right now- the same two teams met in the finals the last four years. No bueno.

      12) Durant bolted a very strong Oklahoma City team that led Golden State 3-1 in Western finals two years ago; since then, the Warriors are 31-6 in NBA playoff games. 31 wins, 6 losses.

How the hell is a team supposed to beat Golden State four out of seven now when they’re 31-6 against the whole league when it counts the most? Houston came close this year, but it seems like the only way Golden State won’t keep winning titles is if they get a ton of injuries.

      11) In their Game 3 win over Cleveland, the Warriors took 26 3-pointers, 44 shots in the paint, and only 11 2-point shots outside the paint.

Analytics people are pretty adamant about not taking 2-point shots outside the paint, but no matter where you shoot from, you still have to have guys who make those shots.

      10) You can bet on just about anything, including teams in each quarter. In their last 20 games, Golden State Warriors are 15-5 vs spread in 3rd quarter.

      9) 76ers and Bryan Colangelo “parted ways”, a nice way of saying they told hm to take a hike over Colangelo’s wife having burner Twitter accounts that criticized people, disclosed medical information that she obviously got from her husband.

It is unclear whether Colangelo knew that his wife was doing this. Doesn’t matter now.

      8) Some things are so weird you couldn’t possibly make them up. Terrell Owens informed the Pro Football Hall of Fame he won’t attend his own induction ceremony in August, apparently because he is annoyed that he wasn’t voted in until his third year of eligibility. Oy.

      7) Las Vegas Bowl ended its association with the Mountain West, starting in 2020, when the new Las Vegas domed stadium opens. From 2020 on, a Pac-12 team will play another power-5 team in the Las Vegas Bowl.

      6) There was a cool article in the New York Times Thursday on Sammy Gelfand, the Warriors’ 31-year old analytics guy who has worked his way up from an internship with a sports agents’ firm to a member of the Golden State front office.

The guy is my hero, and I mean that. Hope he is enjoying the experience.

      5) JT Realmuto doubled twice, hit a triple Wednesday, and was also hit by two pitches, which makes him the first player in the live-ball era, for any team, to have three extra-base hits and two hit-by-pitches in the same game.

      4) Shohei Ohtani left Wednesday night’s game with Kansas City with a blister problem; Angels are playing well this year, but Ohtani has started only nine games, thrown around 50 innings.

      3) Former Indiana/UAB coach Mike Davis is the new coach at Detroit Mercy; he had been at Texas Southern the last seven years. Now at least he can play some home games before conference play starts- at Texas Southern, all his non-league games were on the road.

      2) They told an interesting story on the Rockies game Wednesday about Colorado pitching coach Steve Foster; in 1993, Foster was doing well pitching for the Reds- he was 26, and was a guest on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show in LA, where he threw some balls at milk bottles, like you would at the county fair. No big deal.

Foster pitched against the Dodgers that night, did well, but when he woke up the next day, his arm hurt badly and he never pitched again. He denies the Tonight Show caused any injury, and now he is a major league pitching coach. Go figure.

1— RIP Red Schoendienst, 95, a Hall of Famer who played/managed the Cardinals. He was 95 years old. People in St Louis referred to him as “Mr Cardinal” which is something when you realize that Stan Musial and Bob Gibson were also Cardinals.

          Struggling Aces host improved Dream

Atlanta was expected to be one of the most improved teams this season in the WNBA.

Las Vegas was expected to be one of the more vulnerable teams this season.

And that's exactly how the young season has played out after its first three weeks.

The Dream are 3-3 and coming off an impressive win after handing the Connecticut Sun their first loss of the season. The Aces are 1-5 in their first season playing in Las Vegas. The two meet Friday at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

The Aces are led by this year's top pick in the draft, A'ja Wilson, who is averaging 21.0 points, tied for fourth-best in the league.

Las Vegas last played Sunday and lost to the Chicago Sky 95-90 in what coach Bill Laimbeer thought was a very winnable game. The Aces might have notched their second win if not for Wilson being plagued by fouls and Nia Coffey going down with an ankle injury that could sideline her a few weeks.

"I thought we had control of the game early on and we just kind of relaxed too much," Laimbeer lamented. "They picked up the pace and we weren't able to recover our intensity. They just kept attacking the rim and we kept fouling.

"Too many fouls and offensive rebounds for them and that's a recipe for disaster."

The Dream cooked up the perfect mix of offense and defense to ground the Sun on Tuesday. Tiffany Hayes knocked down 22 points and Atlanta held the league's highest scoring team to 77 points, 17 points below the Sun's average after six games. The Sun had scored at least 100 points in three straight games.

"We just talked as a team and said, 'nobody is scoring 100 points on us.' So, that was that," Hayes told highposthoops.com. "Like I said before, I think our defense is one of the best in the league. We can't just have people coming to our home court and scoring 100 points. We definitely had a talk as a team that we're not going to let that happen."

Playing key roles this season for the Dream have been two newcomers and one familiar face. After sitting out a year, Angel McCoughtry is back. She's averaging 15.3 points after scoring 11 against the Sun.

Free-agent signings brought Jessica Breland and Renee Montgomery into the fold. Montgomery is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.7 points and a team-leading 3.2 assists. Breland is tops on the Dream in rebounds at 8.7 per contest.

They'll have their hands full with Wilson, though, who is still adjusting to the pro game and learning to be a team leader despite having all of six games under her belt.

"I think (my leadership skills) are slowly coming around. It's kind of tough, I still have a rookie mind," Wilson said. "This is my first year going at this, so I'm trying to be a sponge instead of a rock."

The Aces are still waiting for last year's top pick in the draft, Kelsey Plum, to get going. Since returning from overseas, Plum has played four games and is averaging only 5.0 points per game.

Plum being able to score is crucial to the Aces' success. But Laimbeer said he's not sure what to expect from Plum yet.

"She's too new to our team. I know she can shoot (3-pointers). She needs to learn our offense and how to run a team. Overall, she had a good game today," he said after the loss to the Sky.

Fever looking for first win as they host Wings

There's no quit in the Indiana Fever.

Even though the team is winless through its first six games, the players are still working together and have the big picture in focus as they host the Dallas Wings on Friday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Friday's game is the first of three meetings this season. Dallas took two of the three regular-season matchups from the Fever last season with both victories coming in Arlington, Texas.

The Fever came back from a 20-point deficit on Saturday to force overtime against the New York Liberty before falling 87-80 at home. The 20-point come-from-behind effort would have set a record for the largest comeback in Indiana franchise history if the Fever could have finished with a win.

Indiana's 0-6 start is the longest losing streak to begin a season in team history.

"We have to maintain high levels of play on both ends of the floor for longer than 32 minutes," Indiana coach Pokey Chatman said after the loss. "We played 45 today. It's those lapses where you get a good shot but it doesn't go in so you get a little frustrated and commit a foul that have killed us. We have to get through those pivotal moments."

Indiana had four players score in double figures in the loss. Rookie guard Kelsey Mitchell paved the way with a season-high 26 points while forward Candice Dupree added 16 points and eight rebounds. Guard Erica Wheeler had 14 points and seven assists and Tiffany Mitchell hit for 10 points.

The Wings (3-3) head to Indiana on the heels of a 94-90 home victory over Seattle on Saturday as Skylar Diggins-Smith and Liz Cambage combined for 52 points for Dallas.

Diggins-Smith led the Wings with 27 points and Cambage saved her best for last, hitting on 17 of her 25 points in the fourth quarter to help stave off the Storm. Dallas put the game away on a pair of free throws by Diggins-Smith with 1.2 seconds remaining.

Dallas coach Fred Williams said his team is still learning to play together after the offseason addition of Cambage, who allows a lot of the Wings' offense to funnel through the post.

"It takes about five or six games for that to happen," Williams said of the learning curve. " The more reps we get with her, the better the feel we have for offensive cuts and patterns."

Three of the Wings' key players, Aerial Powers, Glory Johnson and Theresa Plaisance, did not play against Seattle because of injuries and will be game-time decisions against Indiana.

Williams said his shorthanded team is doing its best to keep up while waiting to get back his injured players

"They're trying to hold up," Williams told the Dallas Morning News. "They get a little tired. I think if we can just watch Sky's minutes and Liz's minutes, that's important for us right now."

Dallas signed Australian center Cayla George on Sunday to bolster its front line and to help Cambage, George's teammate on the national Olympic team.

Mercury look to extend winning streak vs. Sky

Phoenix Mercury veteran guard Diana Taurasi became the first WNBA player to pass 8,000 career points in a win over the host New York Liberty on Tuesday, but she and her team are more focused on a different impressive number.

That's three wins without a loss on a recent road swing for Phoenix (5-3) after losing three consecutive games. The Mercury return home Friday to play the Chicago Sky, who are 3-3 after erasing a 15-point deficit against visiting Las Vegas in a 95-90 win on Sunday.

"Somebody will come along and break it eventually," Taurasi said of her career scoring mark after achieving 21 points in Phoenix's 80-74 win over the Liberty, giving her 8,018 points.

Brittney Griner dominated the post with 26 points, but what stood out the most was the Mercury holding the Liberty without a point in the last 3:23 to pull away in front of a large school-day crowd at Madison Square Garden.

"People always talk defense and I have a different philosophy on defense. I'd rather be a timely defensive team than an average defensive team," Taurasi said. "You have to get timely stops (and) try to make a play on both ends."

Chicago enters the game with injury concerns after center Stefanie Dolson (strained tendon) and guard Allie Quigley (hip) missed the Sky's win over Las Vegas on Sunday night. They are both questionable for the game against the Mercury.

Despite the absence of Dolson and Quigley against the Aces, Chicago managed the win behind rookie guard Diamond DeShields' season-high 25 points and guard Courtney Vandersloot's 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Sky snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.

Jamierra Faulkner, a guard, finished with a season-best 17 points, including a career-high-tying three 3-pointers, all in the pivotal fourth quarter.

"We really dug down and played together," said Sky coach Amber Stocks, whose team was coming off a 38-point loss to Connecticut. "The way this team played together, they were passionate for each other.

"I would say what really manifested itself today, what you saw on the court, was a byproduct of what the players have been doing in practice. ... It's not the moment, it's the preparation you put in before the moment that allows you to seize the opportunity of the moment."

DeShields was injured during the game when she was inadvertently hit in the mouth by teammate Gabby Williams. She shook it off to lead the Sky to the win and is expected to play against the Mercury.

                  Diggins-Smith has career-high 35 points, Wings win
                  June 8, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 10 of her career-high 35 points in the fourth quarter and the Dallas Wings overcame a 13-point deficit to beat the Indiana Fever 89-83 on Friday night.

Diggins-Smith scored six points in the final 45 seconds, made 14 of 16 free throws, grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds and had six assists. Liz Cambage added 21 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and Allisha Gray had 15 points for the Wings (4-3).

Rookie Victoria Vivians hit a pair of free throws - the first foul shots of her career - to give the Fever (0-7) an 81-79 lead with 48.4 seconds to play. Diggins-Smith was fouled as she answered with a runner in the lane and missed the free throw, but Glory Johnson grabbed the offensive rebound and her putback gave Dallas a two-point lead with 42 seconds remaining. After Vivians missed a layup on the other end, Diggins-Smith and Cambage combined to make 6 of 6 free throws to seal it.

Indiana's Kelsey Mitchell, the second overall pick this year, tied her season high with 26 points. The Fever, who shot 6 of 21 in the fourth quarter, have lost seven in a row to start a season for the first time in franchise history.

PHOENIX (AP) - Brittney Griner scored 24 points and Diana Taurasi had 18 points and seven assists to help Phoenix beat Chicago.

DeWanna Bonner added 13 points, Sancho Lyttle had 12, and Briann January 11 for Phoenix. The Mercury (6-4) have won four in a row following a three-game skid.

Gabby Williams, the fourth overall pick this year, had a season-high 26 points for Chicago (3-4).

                    • Snubbed Lynx move on to face Sun

The WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx were not invited to the White House to honor their fourth league championship.

So, the champions, mired in a four-game losing streak, took to the streets of Washington D.C., handing out sneakers to 300 underprivileged kids and shooting hoops at a local elementary school.

"I'm so ridiculously blessed to have so (many) memories at the White House, so many great ones," said Maya Moore, who had made the previous three visits. "This will probably be more unique. We made some great memories with these kids. ... We'll definitely remember this."

Perhaps bathing in a bit of karma, Moore and her team then went out and ended the losing streak with an 88-80 victory over the Washington Mystics Thursday night, raising their disappointing early record to 3-5 with another difficult road test coming up.

On Saturday, the Lynx visit the sizzling Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., with the Sun improving to 6-1 with a dramatic Thursday night road win over the New York Liberty.

The Sun won their first five games, the first three at home, before losing at Atlanta in Game 6. But Shekinna Stricklen converted a four-point play at the buzzer to produce an 88-86 win in the finale of a four-game trip.

"I've never hit a game-winner, that was my first time," Stricklen said after her heroics.

"I know I'm a good shooter, my mindset was mentally always stay ready. That last play, Jas (Thomas) is a great driver. I kind of saw the look in her face. I read her face. She found me and I knocked it down."

Sylvia Fowles delivered 21 points and 12 rebounds -- her sixth double-double of the young season -- while Moore scored 19 points and Simeone Augustus added 16 in Minnesota's win Thursday night.

"Obviously we were pretty desperate," head coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We had dropped four in a row. The most in this team's time together, the four or five who have been together. ... I thought we were pretty gritty, we held them to 11 in the fourth quarter. That was obviously the key to the game."

The win avenged a May 25 loss on the same floor, when the Lynch failed to hold an 18-point lead and fell to the Mystics.

Jasmine Thomas had 19 points and eight assists, and Chiney Ogwumike 16 points and eight boards for the Sun on Thursday night. Alyssa Thomas, who scored 19 points and tied her career high with 17 rebounds in the loss at Atlanta, had 11 points, nine boards and four assists.

Stricklen was told earlier in the week she would not be starting and would be coming off the bench.

"I totally understand everything; I'm a team player," she said. "If this team stays together, we can go a long way."

The Sun play two straight at home after the four-game trip -- then leave again for a five-game trip.

Both teams come into this matinee healthy.

                            June 9, 2018

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Courtney Williams had 22 points, Jasmine Thomas added 18 and the Connecticut Sun beat the defending champion Minnesota Lynx 89-75 on Saturday.

The Sun (7-1), who won their first five games of the season and are off to their best start in more than a decade, led by double digits early in the fourth quarter before Minnesota (3-6) cut the margin to 74-67 with 6 1/2 minutes to go. Connecticut scored nine straight points to pull away for good.

Chiney Ogwumike had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Shekinna Stricklen also scored 11 for Connecticut.

Sylvia Fowles led the Lynx with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Maya Moore added 17 points and Cecilia Zandalasini scored 11.

Minnesota trailed 44-38 at halftime but briefly took control with a 14-4 run to start the second half. The Sun quickly regained the lead with a 13-0 run and never trailed again.
