      • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the PGA Championship next week:

        12-1— DJohnson, McIlroy, Spieth

        16-1— Fowler, Thomas, Woods

        18-1— Justin Rose

        20-1— Koepka, Rahm

        25-1— Day, Fleetwood, Molinari

        30-1— Matsuyama, Reed

        **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Some of my favorite movie scenes……

        13) Jack Nicholson as Colonel Jessup on the witness stand in A Few Good Men– “You WANT me on that wall; you NEED me on that wall!!!” Great acting.

        12) In Prince of Tides, when Nick Nolte’s character takes Barbra Streisand’s husband’s Stradivarius violin and dangles it over the edge of the balcony, until he apologizes to his wife for being rude. Then he tosses the million-dollar violin in the air but catches it, then walks out of the dinner party.

        11) In Any Given Sunday, when QB Willie Beamen visits the coach’s house for dinner and a “talk” and coach Tony D’Amato lectures him— “You’re the goddamn quarterback!!!”

I think this scene is better than the “Game of Inches” speech that Pacino gives near the end of the movie, before the last game.

        10) Rocky II wasn’t a good movie, but the last fight scene, where Rocky Balboa wins the heavyweight title for the first time, is a great fight scene, probably the best scene in all the Rocky movies.

        9) In the movie Heat, there is a scene with Al Pacino (the cop) and Robert Deniro (bank robber) where they actually talk in a diner about how someday, their situation will come to a head and either the arrest will be made, or harm will come to the cop. Deniro and Pacino; a great scene.

        8) Susan Sarandon and James Spader were in a 1990 movie called White Palace; I only saw this movie for the first time in the last year or so.

There is a scene where a lot of people were at Thanksgiving dinner and they’re talking about politics; the patriarch of the family is Steven Hill (the original DA on Law and Order).

When a younger person says something Hill’s character sees as uninformed, he snaps at her, “Would it kill you to pick up a newspaper?” Good stuff.

        7) In the true story Invincible, when 30-year old bartender Vince Papale breaks the news to his best friend that he made the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster, despite never having played college football.

        6) In Friday Night Lights, when the coach (Billy Bob Thornton) delivers a halftime speech when his team is getting smoked. He talks about “being perfect” and how giving your all is the most important thing of all.

Of all the sports movies I’ve seen, I think Thornton’s character in this movie is the best portrayal of a coach that I’ve seen.

        5) In the original Bad News Bears, when the coach is talking to his worst player, ordering him into the championship game- the kid is too nervous to go out and play.

“Listen, Lupus, you didn’t come into this life just to sit around on a dugout bench, did ya? Now get your ass out there and do the best you can.”

        4) In Roxanne, Steve Martin’s character has a very long nose, like Cyrano de Bergerac; guy in a bar insults his long nose, the whole bar shuts down, and Martin mocks the insult.

“I suppose you could do better?” and Martin proceeds to give 20 jokes (actually 26) that were all funnier than the guy’s insult.

        3) In Rounders, the scene where Mike (Matt Damon) finds his law professor (Martin Landau) in a restaurant and the professor tells him how his parents disowned him because he chose to study the law instead of becoming a rabbi.

        2) Oakland A’s 20-game winning streak in Moneyball; at least they showed Miguel Tejada’s walk-off homer in the 18th straight win- they gave him almost no credit in the book/movie for how good the A’s were that year— he was the best shortstop in the game.

        1) Bob Cousy shooting free throws in an empty gym with Nick Nolte in Blue Chips. Cousy was 65 at the time, made 10 in a row while wearing a shirt and tie- they filmed the scene in one take.

            • Sky top short-handed Mercury, 101-87
              July 25, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) Rookie Diamond DeShields tied a season best with 25 points, Courtney Vandersloot had 17 points and 11 assists and the Chicago Sky beat the short-handed Phoenix Mercury 101-87 on Wednesday in the final game before the All-Star break.

Chicago led by 16 points early in the second half but Phoenix went on an 11-2 run to pull to 61-59. Chicago opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run, capped by DeShields' offensive rebound and layup, and led by double figures for the final four minutes.

Allie Quigley added 19 points, with five 3-pointers, for Chicago (9-17). Stefanie Dolson had 13 points for her sixth straight game in double figures.

Chicago shot 67.7 percent from the field (21 of 32) in the first half en route to a 56-43 lead. DeShields made all seven of her first-quarter field goals for 15 points.

DeWanna Bonner had 30 points and 13 rebounds for Phoenix (15-11), which has lost six of its last seven games. Phoenix was without Diana Taurasi, who did not play due to a suspension after reaching the WNBA's technical foul limit of seven.

Phoenix center Brittney Griner picked up her fourth foul with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter. After a review, she was given a flagrant 2 for an elbow to Dolson and was ejected. Last month, Griner was ejected after striking Dolson with a left hand to the face.

                • WNBA heads to AS break after strong start
                  July 24, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) The WNBA heads into the All-Star break this week after a strong first few months of play highlighted by tight standings and record-breaking performances.

''This might be the most competitive season I've seen in all my years coaching,'' Seattle coach Dan Hughes said. ''No one is sitting out this year and there are no easy games in this league.''

The Storm currently have the best record in the league at 18-7 and there's only four losses separating second place Atlanta from ninth-place Las Vegas making this season's playoff race one of the tightest ever.

The All-Star game is Saturday in Minneapolis and there's no debating it's been exciting an exciting regular season, but the statistics show some of it is optics.

It may seem more games are being decided in the last few seconds based on thrilling buzzer-beaters that Atlanta and New York had to beat Connecticut over the past few weeks, but the percentage of games decided by five-point or less is about the same as last year at about 25 percent. That's down from the 30 percent in 2014, according to information provided by the league from the Elias Sports Bureau.

Viewers are tuning in to the competitive play with ratings on ESPN2 up 38 percent from last season. It's the most-watched WNBA regular season since 2012.

Fans have been treated to some memorable individual efforts.

Liz Cambage broke the WNBA individual game scoring record with a 53-point effort against New York. Shekinna Stricklen tied the league's mark, hitting eight 3-pointers in a game . And those record-setting performances happened in the last week.

POWER POLL: A look at this week's WNBA poll which Seattle sits atop for the third straight week:

                  1. Seattle (18-7): Storm play six of their final nine games on the road.

                  2. Atlanta (15-9): The Dream are 10-0 this season in games decided by six points or less. Last season they were 4-9 in such games.

                  3. Los Angeles (15-10): Injury bug has hit the Sparks with Alana Beard out with a groin injury and Nneka Ogwumike missing the last few games with an illness.

                  4. Phoenix (15-10): Mercury will not have Diana Taurasi in their final game before the All-Star break for technical foul accumulations after she was hit with her seventh one in a loss to Minnesota that triggers a one-game suspension.

T5. Minnesota (14-10): A victory over New York in the final game before the break would give the Lynx three consecutive wins.

T5. Dallas (14-11): Liz Cambage had a week to remember and the Wings hope to keep riding their Australian center to the postseason.

                  1. Washington (14-10): It's been a rough stretch for the Mystics, who have dropped four of their last six games.

                  2. Connecticut (13-12): The margin between winning and losing for the Sun has been razor thin. They dropped two games in the past two weeks at the buzzer.

                  3. Las Vegas (12-13): What a difference a change of scenery has made; the Aces already have more wins in Las Vegas than any of the last three years when the franchise couldn't reach double-digit victories.

                  4. Chicago (8-17): Courtney Vandersloot had the seventh triple-double in league history in a win over Dallas on Friday.

                  5. New York (7-17): Barring a 10-game winning streak to close the season, the Liberty will finish under .500 for the first time since 2014. The franchise's streak of double-digit victories in every season could be jeopardy.

                  6. Indiana (3-22): The Fever pulled off another road win, beating Los Angeles.

                  ---

                  PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Liz Cambage, Wings. Set the WNBA record for points in a game when she had 53 against New York. She followed that up with a 35-point effort in her next contest against Washington to set the two-game mark as well. She averaged 34 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks to help Dallas go 2-2 this week.

                  ---

                  MILESTONE:

Sue Bird played in her 500th career regular season game Sunday, breaking the WNBA record held by DeLisha Milton-Jones. Bird has spent her entire career in Seattle and has been the team's starting point guard since her first game on May 30, 2002.

                  ---

                  SWAPPED:

The Wings and Washington Mystics have exchanged backup guards, with Tayler Hill and a second-round pick in next year's draft going to Dallas for Aerial Powers. The trade announced Monday includes the right for the teams to swap first-round picks in the 2019 WNBA draft.

                  ---

                  GAME OF THE WEEK

WNBA All-Star game, Saturday in Minneapolis. It will be Team Delle Donne vs. Team Parker in the league's All-Star game. The WNBA changed its format this year going with one similar to the NBA by having captains (leading vote-getters) draft the teams.

                  • Delle Donne, Parker to captain WNBA ASG
                    July 17, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) Elena Delle Donne and Candace Parker will captain the WNBA All-Star teams.

Maya Moore was the top vote-getter, but told the league she was unable to perform the captain duties.

''I'm once again blown away at the support I've received through votes by our amazing basketball fans. I'm so grateful for all the love,'' Moore said. ''As somebody who is receiving a lot of attention, I wanted to take an opportunity to broaden that focus. I'm thrilled for everyone selected and now more than ever I'm looking forward to just being a fellow fan of all the greatness I'm surrounded by in this league.''

With Moore passing on the opportunity to be captain, that gave Parker the nod as she finished third in the voting by fans, players, coaches and the media.

''I'm honored to be named captain and am excited to be joined by two of my teammates,'' Parker said. ''It should be fun and it's good to see the league mixing it up with the captain format.''

Parker and Delle Donne will draft players from the 20 other All-Stars who were announced Tuesday.

''I'm glad that Maya turned down her role so that I can have the first pick,'' Delle Donne said laughing in a phone interview with the AP. ''I've got everyone's name written down and their position. You can't pick wrong as you have really great players out there.''

Delle Donne wouldn't say who she's picking first, but did say that she feels loyalty to Mystics teammate Kristi Toliver to draft her.

''The one pick I will give away is that she will be on my team,'' she said.

Parker has two Sparks teammates in the pool with Nneka Ogwumike and Chelsea Gray.

Other players that Delle Donne and Parker can choose from include Sue Bird, who made a record 11th All-Star Game, breaking a tie with Tamika Catchings for most all-time.

''Seventeen years ago, if you told me I'd be setting a new record with 11 All-Star appearances, I would have called you crazy,'' Bird said. ''It's a testament to my teammates and coaches throughout the years, and an absolute honor given all of the greats who have played in this league.''

Rookie A'ja Wilson will play in her first All-Star contest, as well as Jewell Loyd. Dallas Wings center Liz Cambage will play in her second one. Earlier on Tuesday, she broke the WNBA single-game scoring record when she had 53 points against New York.

''That was incredible, it bumped her up the list for sure,'' Delle Donne said.

The WNBA took conference affiliation out of the midseason game and 16 of the 22 All-Stars were from the Western Conference. That group includes Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus. Fowles, Moore and Augustus will get a chance to play in front of their home fans; the All-Star Game is in Minnesota on July 28.

''It's going to be great,'' Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said. ''There's so much talent out there, it's like coaching a USA Basketball team. It's going to be nice to coach some players that normally I don't get the chance to.''

Brondello, who will coach Australia in the women's basketball world cup in September, will be teamed with Parker.

Delle Donne's team will be led by Seattle coach Dan Hughes, who has guided the Storm to the league's best record.

The captains will draft their teams on Wednesday. The teams will be revealed Thursday night. The draft won't be televised, which Delle Donne wasn't completely upset about.

''I'd like to get one year under my belt,'' she said. ''Wouldn't want to be put on blast with selections.''

Fans accounted for 40 percent of the vote, while current players, current head coaches and a media panel accounted for 20 percent each. Players were not allowed to vote for their teammates. Coaches could not vote for players on their own team.

Moore was the leading vote-getter among fans (47,620). She was followed by Delle Donne (42,171), Parker (38,575), Bird (37,098) and Taurasi (35,687). Fans cast 44 percent more votes than they did last year (873,437 vs. 604,680).

Wilson was the only rookie to make the All-Star list and every team has at least one player in the game except for last-place Indiana.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

                      13) Dodgers-Phillies played a 16-inning game Tuesday, with LA using Kike Hernandez as a pitcher in the 16th- they would’ve used starter Rich Hill if they had the lead, but they didn’t and they basically gave a game away.

Game took 5:55 to play, ended after 1am, then teams had quick turnaround, playing a day game on Wednesday. Dodgers’ AAA team is in Oklahoma City, so tough to get another arm in town quickly. Phillies’ AAA team is closely in Lehigh Valley, easier for them.

                      12) Cardinals were in Cincinnati this week; they started pitchers Monday/Tuesday who were both making their first MLB start. Neither pitcher allowed a hit in the first six innings, but neither pitcher got a win, either.

                      11) Maui Classic is loaded this November: first round matchups are…….
                      Auburn-Xavier, Duke-San Diego State, Arizona-Iowa State, Gonzaga-Illinois.

Thats three pretty solid days/nights of TV watching for me.

                      10) Former Penn Quakers basketball coach Jerome Allen allegedly took bribes from a Miami businessman who wanted his son to get into Penn “as a recruited basketball player” which would increase his chance of being admitted to the prestigious school.

When the father was accused of health-care fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and bribery a while back, the government uncovered more than $74,000 in gifts that the father gave to coach Allen in 2013 and 2014.

The son got into Penn and still goes there; he never played on the basketball team. Allen got fired three years ago and is now one of Brad Stevens’ assistants in the NBA with the Celtics.

                      9) Tampa Bay beat the Bronx Bombers 3-2 Wednesday; they brought in a lefty reliever in the last inning, moved Sergio Romo to 3B for a batter, so Romo could come back and face the next hitter. Romo struck out Brett Gardner to end the game; Kevin Cash is doing an amazing job, having that roster at 52-50.

                      8) Bronx catcher Gary Sanchez got pummeled on social media Monday night after he failed to hustle on a couple of key plays that were important in a 7-6 Tampa Bay win.

Sanchez is a lousy defensive catcher who is hitting .188; why is he the starter? If he’s not going to hustle, why is he even in the major leagues?

Tuesday, Sanchez was put on the DL with a groin injury, which diffuses the issue. Whether he is really hurt or just getting 10 days off to shut the media up is open for debate.

                      7) Random trivia: An actor named John Hurt has 207 movie/TV credits to his name; he died in 43 different movies, which appears to be the all-time record.

                      6) Obscure TV/movie trivia: I’m watching an old Law and Order re-run the other night, from the series’ first year or two— one of the opposing lawyers is the guy who played the manager of the baseball team in Bull Durham. So I look the actor up on the Interweb.

Turns out that the Law and Order episode was Trey Wilson’s last acting job; he died from a cerebral hemorrhage a few weeks before his 41st birthday, only a couple years after he made Bull Durham. 41 is way too young to die.

                      5) Angels are wasting Mike Trout’s prime; Angels lost 5-3 to the White Sox Monday night, with Trout walking four times and hitting a sac fly. Five plate appearances, no official AB’s.

Justin Upton usually hits behind Trout; he’s come to bat with 309 men on base and knocked in only 36 of them (19 of 48 from 3rd base). Knocking in 11.7% of baserunners isn’t good for the guy you have batting cleanup.

                      4) Baseball doings:
                      — Red Sox acquired P Nathan Eovaldi from Tampa Bay for rookie P Jaylen Beeks.
                      — Mets put Yoenis Cespedes (heel) back on the DL. He’ll have surgery and may not even be back for the start of next season.
                      — A’s P Kendall Graveman (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery
                      — Orioles sent P Zach Britton to division rival New York, getting three pitching prospects in return: Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carroll. Tate is 5-2, 3.38 in 15 Eastern League starts (AA level) this season.

                      3) Looking at an action chart for Week 1 NFL games, Texans-Patriots is getting most evenly balanced action at William Hill books. 52% of play is on New England (-6.5).

Most one-sided action is on the Falcons (+4.5, 95% of $$ bet), Colts (-2.5, 92%).

                      2) Cleveland QB Baker Mayfield got a $21.85M signing bonus; a 4-year, $32.68M fully guaranteed deal overall. Mayfield told his agent not to quibble on some contract details so he could be in camp on Day 1 to compete for the starting job.

                      1) Teams that use defensive shifts the least: Angels, Rangers, Cubs.

When Joe Maddon managed in Tampa, he was at forefront of using shifts, so thats an interesting change.

                      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

On May 17, 1979, Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 at Wrigley Field:

                        — Both starting pitchers got KO’d after getting only one out.

                        — Bill Buckner had 7 RBI for the Cubs, seven years before his infamous World Series error.

                        — Dave Kingman hit three homers, knocked in six runs for Chicago.

                        — Pete Rose batted 3rd for Philly; he scored four runs, knocked in four.

                        — Reliever Rawly Eastwick got the win, shutting Cubs out in 8th/9th innings.

                        — Crowd that day in Chicago was only 14,952.

                        **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                        13) I always wonder about guys who get traded during the season; what happens to their stuff?

Manny Machado went from Orioles to LA last week; who moves his stuff to the west coast? If a player is married, the spouse gets stuck with all that work, but if not, then what?

Asdrubel Cabrera got traded to the Phillies but they were in Cincinnati over the weekend, are in Boston now. He hasn’t even been in Philadelphia since the trade. Where does he live when he gets there?

The better players are so wealthy they can pay people to help them out; does the agent do the logistics for the move?

                        12) I also wonder how Michael O’Keefe’s acting career would’ve turned out if he hadn’t played golf against Judge Smails in Caddyshack.

Think about it; he blew the clerkship because he played golf with Ty Webb against the judge; what is Danny Noonan doing now?

                        a) Golf pro, is on the Senior Tour.
                        b) Bartender in the clubhouse at Bushwood CC.
                        c) Went to law school anyway, became a judge
                        d) Owns a driving range like Roy McAvoy in Tin Cup

                        11) Jacob deGrom has started 21 games this season; six of them were 0-0 after the 5th inning. Mets lost five of those six games.

                        10) If I were advising Dez Bryant on how to get another NFL job, the first thing I’d tell him is to shut his bleeping mouth.

It doesn’t matter if what he says is right; what matters is that Bryant is perceived as a cancer in the locker room and for a marginal player to get signed, he has to fit in, not stand out.

                        9) Have been reading online how NFL players get messages on social media from fantasy football owners who have those players on their team and lose games.

A guy tweeted this to Odell Beckham: “this is my real life too. Remember that dropped pass on 4th down with under 5 to play? Want to refund me my league entry fee?”

There are thousands of fantasy leagues around the country; make/don’t make a big play, and ton of money changes hands. That doesn’t even take legalized gambling into effect.

                        8) On ESPN.com, an interesting piece by Jason Witten, geared towards players:

                        Jason Witten’s Social Media Commandments
                        1. Don’t read your mentions good or bad — the feedback that matters is from your coach and those you respect.
                        2. Don’t reply to a negative; keep your eye above the spectator line.
                        3. Negative social media is often not indicative of the real world.
                        4. Use social media as a way to stay informed and connect.
                        5. Don’t post anything that wouldn’t make your family proud.

                        7) Sound wagering advice from Todd Fuhrman (@toddfuhrman) on Twitter:

“if you plan to bet football this fall and want to make ONE simple change to your betting habits; make it a priority to give yourself multiple lines (outs) to bet into rather than placing all your wagers at just one shop”

                        6) We read lot of cruddy stuff about famous people; here is a good thing:

The LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron Public Schools opened a new elementary school for at-risk children on Monday. James donated $50M of his own money to the program.

The I Promise School focuses on educating children from challenging situations or backgrounds. The school will begin with two grades, 3rd and 4th, with plans to expand in the coming years, until it is Grades 1-8.

The I Promise School has a longer school day and longer school year.

                        5) Jets finally signed rookie QB/savior Sam Darnold, which was the smart thing to do. Media at Jets’ camp wasn’t thrilled that Darnold was unavailable for interviews afterwards.

                        4) Lions’ coach Matt Patricia, on advice he got on being an NFL head coach:

“…….Be yourself, make sure the players see who you are, make sure they see the passion, the love for the game, make sure they understand the message.”

                        3) Broadcast of Monday’s Blue Jays-A’s game on Oakland radio was commercial-free, with the commercials replaced by memories of late announcer Bill King, a year after his enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

                        2) There are rumors about that Adam Jones blocked a trade from Baltimore to the Phillies. When a player declines to go from a last-place team to a first-place team, if makes you wonder.

                        1) Rick Pitino has a book coming out in September that will “lay all his cards on the table” about his time coaching, both in the NBA and in college.

If you’ve seen Spike Lee’s excellent movie He Got Game, none of the Louisville stuff should be a big surprise. Some of the scenes in He Got Game were similar to the Louisville mess, and that movie was made in 1998!!!!

I’ll read the book at some point, but what we really need is Pitino on TV analyzing games, so I can learn from him. At least put him in the studio. Please?

                              July 31, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Elena Delle Donne had 28 points and 16 rebounds to help the Washington Mystics snap the Atlanta Dreams' franchise-record eight-game winning streak with an 86-71 victory on Tuesday night.

It was Atlanta's first loss since falling to Seattle 95-86 on July 6.

Washington started the second half scoring 12 of the first 18 points, capped by Delle Donne `s reverse layup, to build a 62-49 lead. The Mystics cruised in the fourth, outscoring Atlanta 16-8, as the Dream were just 3 of 13 from the field in the final 10 minutes.

LaToya Sanders added 13 points and Aerial Powers had 10 for Washington (15-11). Natasha Cloud made three 3-pointers and scored 11 points before fouling out with 3:17 remaining.

Tiffany Hayes scored 18 points for Atlanta (16-10). Elizabeth Williams had 13 points and nine rebounds and Angel McCoughtry added 12 points. The Dream was just 3 of 22 from 3-point range and shot 36.1 percent overall.

                              SKY 92, WINGS 91

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Allie Quigley scored 22 points, Cheyenne Parker added 20, and the Sky blew a 24-point lead before rallying past the Wings.

Parker was left open inside to pull Chicago to 90-88 and after a Dallas miss, Diamond DeShields made a fast-break layup to tie it with 32.2 seconds to go.

Elizabeth Cambage was fouled after an offensive rebound and she went 1 of 2 at the line to give Dallas a 91-90 lead. Parker made a putback with 5.3 seconds to go, Dallas turned it over on an over-the-top pass to Cambage and Chicago dribbled out the clock.

Courtney Vandersloot had 12 points and 14 assists for Chicago (10-17). The Sky led 55-36 at halftime after shooting 67.9 percent from the field, including making all five 3-pointers.

Cambage had 33 points and 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season for Dallas (14-12). She was presented a framed No. 53 jersey before the game, commemorating her WNBA single-game scoring record set earlier this month.

Chicago took a 24-13 lead late in the first quarter, extended it to 49-25 at the 3:43 mark of the second quarter and it was 55-36 at halftime.

The Wings outscored the Sky by 19 points in the third quarter - with two runs of 11-2. Allisha Gray capped the third-quarter scoring with an offensive rebound and layup to tie it at 72. It was the closest Dallas had been since trailing 9-8.

                              STORM 102, MERCURY 91

PHOENIX (AP) - Jewell Loyd scored 29 points with five 3-pointers, Natasha Howard had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, and the Storm beat the Mercury.

Breanna Stewart added 16 points and eight rebounds for Seattle (20-7). Alysha Clark scored 15 points as 10 difference Storm players scored. Seattle shot 54.1 percent from the field, including 11 of 22 3-pointers.

Phoenix has lost seven of its last eight games, including four straight at home.
