MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Maya Moore scored 32 points, Sylvia Fowles added 28 points and 17 rebounds, and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 91-79 for their fifth straight win Tuesday night.

The Lynx (8-6) took the lead for good with an 11-0 run early in the first quarter and kept it in double digits after a 15-3 run early in the third. The Storm (10-5) had an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to 87-77 but were unable to get within single digits in the final minutes.

Breanna Stewart entered the game averaging a league-leading 21.9 points and finished with 27 for Seattle. She made 10 of 14 from the field, including all three of her 3-point attempts, and 4 of 5 from the foul line.

Natasha Howard, who was traded from the Lynx to the Storm in the offseason, received her 2017 WNBA Championship ring before the contest.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points and the Mystics beat the Sun.

The Sun (8-6) closed the deficit to 82-76 on Alex Bentley's 21-foot jumper with 4:17 left. But Connecticut went scoreless for over three minutes and the game was out of reach in the final minute.

Sanders added 18 points, Toliver scored 14 and Ariel Atkins had 13 for the Mystics, who won their fourth straight and fifth in the last six.

Chiney Ogwumike had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Sun, who lost five of six.

          SPARKS 87, WINGS 83

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chelsea Gray made a key jumper from the right elbow with 20.9 seconds left and the Sparks held on to beat the Wings.

Gray's jumper made it 84-81 and the Sparks (11-3) made 3 of 4 free throws after a pair of defensive stops. Gray finished with 23 points and Candace Parker led the way with 29.

The Wings (6-7) beat Los Angeles 101-72 in Arlington on Friday night, snapping the Sparks' five-game winning streak. Neither team led by double digits on Tuesday night.

Dallas opened the game with a 10-2 run and led most of the way. Los Angeles took control in the fourth quarter with a 15-3 run capped by Parker's jumper at 75-71.

Nneka Ogwumike missed the game for Los Angeles with a back injury.

            • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win Quicken Loans National tourney this week:

              13-2— Rickie Fowler

              21-2— Eldrick Woods

              18-1— Marc Leishman

              19-1— Francesco Molinari

              22-1— Kyle Stanley

              23-1— Charles Howell III

              **********

              Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……

              13) If you care about such things, the over/under for number of hot dogs Joey Chestnut eats at the Nathan’s contest in Brooklyn July 4 is 68.5 (over -$175).

              12) Rays 1, Nationals 0— Sergio Romo struck out Michael Taylor for last out, then yelled at him from in front of the mound. Both benches emptied, nothing happened, but have some class.

Washington played on Sunday night at home, got to Tampa at 5am Monday, got shut out on Monday night, then played a noon game Tuesday, was shut out again. Not great scheduling.

              11) LA Clippers are trading guard Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards for center Marcin Gortat; LA coach Doc Rivers can’t be thrilled that his team traded his son.

LA trading for Gortat could foreshadow DeAndre Jordan being sent elsewhere.

Clippers have training camp in Hawai’i, by the way. Must be brutal.

              10) Once the Raiders’ domed stadium is finished in 2020, there might be two bowl games instead of one in Las Vegas each December.

              9) First three times Jose Altuve batted Tuesday, he walked on four pitches all three times, and none of them were intentional.

Yuli Gurriel batted behind Altuve; the first three times he batted, he saw four pitches total.

              8) Fenway Park is only AL ballpark that Mike Trout hasn’t homered in.

              7) It rained in Milwaukee last night, but the Royals-Brewers game was played, in front of 34,412 fans. Good thing they put a retractable roof on Miller Park, unlike Minnesota, which needed a roof maybe more than Milwaukee does.

              6) Baseball injury doings:
              — Cubs put 3B Kris Bryant (shoulder) on DL
              — A’s put Daniel Mengden (foot) on DL.
              — Rangers put 1B Ronald Guzman (concussion) on 7-day DL
              — Braves P Anibal Sanchez left in the 5th inning with an injury.

              5) Stewart Cink finished T2 at the Hartford Open last week; he is back in the world’s top 100 rankings for the first time since September 2011.

              4) A dead body was found in a walk-in freezer at Suntrust Park in Atlanta where the Braves play. The dead person was a third party contractor found by another person who works for that company.

              Yikes.

              3) Matt Harvey pitched in Atlanta last night; first time he batted, Atlanta organist played “New York, New York” as his walk-up music. Harvey used to pitch for the Mets.

Organist played Eddie Murphy’s ‘Party All the Time’ before Harvey’s next at-bat. Mets traded Harvey because his, um…..off-field activities affected his on-field play.

              2) For some reason, I keep getting ESPN the Magazine in the mail; don’t pay for it, don’t want it, there isn’t lot of good info in it, but they just keep sending it. Whatever.

              1) Get well soon Sandy Alderson, who is on a leave of absence from the Mets because of health concerns. Hope he is 100% healthy soon.

                    • Sky aiming for back-to-back wins

The Chicago Sky will go for back-to-back wins when they host the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.

Chicago (4-9) is coming off one of its best performances of the season with a 97-88 win over the Phoenix Mercury. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Sky, who also marked a season high in points.

How much did the group need that win?

"Bad," Sky point guard Courtney Vandersloot said to the Chicago Daily Herald. "We were all in a good mind space. We felt that if we put a complete game together that this would happen. We weren't jumping ship, but let's be honest, we needed a win. And we worked hard for it. We earned it."

Two days later, another challenge awaits.

Atlanta (7-6) also is seeking back-to-back victories after holding on for a 75-70 win over the Connecticut Sun in its last game. The victory propped the Dream back over .500 as they jockey for playoff positioning in a crowded field.

Guard-forward Angel McCoughtry has been a big part of Atlanta's success. The 31-year-old veteran recently was named as the WNBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 32 points per game in her past two contests. She scored a career-high 39 points against the New York Liberty and followed that up with 25 points in the win over Connecticut.

A busy midseason schedule has forced Dream guard Renee Montgomery and her teammates to quickly refocus.

"At this point in the season, it's hard to get a lot of scouting in, and it's hard to get a lot of anything in," Montgomery said to the team's official website. "... So basically you just have to be focused when you come into the game about sets that everyone runs and just legs. Once it gets to a point in the season where we're traveling a lot, you come back and you play a high-octane offense, it's really about recovery."

This is the second meeting between the teams this season. On May 23, Atlanta cruised to an 81-63 win thanks in large part to a team-high 22 points from guard Tiffany Hayes, as well as 13 points from Brittney Sykes off the bench. McCoughtry added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sky guard Allie Quigley scored 13 points to lead her team in the first matchup against the Dream. Center Stefanie Dolson contributed nine points and six rebounds, while rookie Diamond DeShields added eight points and a pair of boards.

Chicago is 3-4 at home this season. Atlanta carries an identical 3-4 record on the road.

Sun return home to face Fever

The road-weary Connecticut Sun return home for the first time since June 13 when they face the Indiana Fever at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on Wednesday night.

But they won't be home long.

After playing the Fever on Wednesday, Connecticut is off on a four-game western trip, which will mean playing 13 of their first 19 games on the road. That, of course, means a heavy home schedule down the stretch, something coach Curt Miller has been counting on.

The Sun finished a five-game trip 1-4 Tuesday night, falling 82-70 to the Mystics in Washington -- the Sun's fifth loss in the last six games after a 7-1 start.

Playing their fifth straight game without the injured Alyssa Thomas (shoulder), the Sun fell to 8-6 heading into Wednesday night's game with the 1-13 Fever.

Chiney Ogwumike led the Sun with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jasmine Thomas and Alex Bentley added 13 points apiece and Michelle Tuck 11 in the loss, which was the second defeat in three games against the Mystics.

This will be the second game between the Sun and Fever in four nights, as Connecticut captured its only win on the road trip Sunday night in Indianapolis.

Rachel Banham had a career-high 20 points, including going 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Brionna Jones established career highs in points (18) and rebounds (10), and both Banham and Jones part of a 46-10 scoring difference between the two benches.

The Fever have lost three in a row since their only win -- a 32-point blowout of the Atlanta Dream.

"We just need to calm down and play our game," guard Victoria Vivians said after Sunday's loss. "Not like confide in what they're doing... just calm down and be who we are."

Natalie Achonwa went 7 of 7 from the floor, scored 16 points and had seven rebounds and Candice Dupree added 15 points and eight boards in Sunday's loss to the Sun, Indiana's second loss of the season to that team.

Since the last time the Sun were at home, Miller, the 2017 WNBA coach of the year, made a side trip to Pennsylvania, where he was inducted into the Metropolitan Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

"It's truly a special opportunity to go into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame," said Miller, a Girard, Ohio, native. "My hometown of Girard, growing up outside of Erie, Pennsylvania, was very special to me. I was surrounded by great coaches at an early age and that led me to the coaching profession because they influenced my life almost as second fathers."

                      Weary Wings visit Aces

Talent can take a team only so far. Luck seems to always play a role. To be successful a team has to have both, along with mental toughness.

Minnesota and Los Angeles have been the WNBA standard bearers for quite a while and teams such as Las Vegas and Dallas can only wonder what it's like to enjoy the kind of success the Lynx and Sparks have had during their recent run.

The Aces won 15 games over the past two years playing as the San Antonio Stars before moving to Vegas. The Wings have fared a little better winning 27 times during that span, making the playoffs in 2017. This year, the two have shown brief flashes of progress but still have a way to go.

Dallas and Las Vegas will put their wares on display Wednesday at Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Aces (5-10) are coming off a loss to the aforementioned Lynx -- a loss that should provide a good learning opportunity for Bill Laimbeer's squad, which got a good look at what makes up a contender.

"They've won four out of the last six championships," second-year guard Kelsey Plum said the Lynx. "Of course they're skilled and athletic and they have talent, but it all boils down to mental toughness ... They beat us today because they were tougher than us."

Plum was the top pick in last year's WNBA draft. This year's top pick, A'ja Wilson echoed her teammate's thoughts.

"I think we really learned something from this game," Wilson said. "The quicker we learn (mental toughness), the easier it'll be for us. You have to act like you've been in situations before and know how to pull out of it from a mental standpoint ... At the end of the day, the game is all mental."

Talk about mental toughness. The Wings (6-7) are playing their third game in four nights and Wednesday's game is a back-to-back. On Tuesday, Dallas lost to the Sparks 87-83 in Los Angeles. On Sunday, the Seattle Storm beat the Wings, 97-76.

Dallas' Kayla Thornton blamed the loss on a lack of intensity.

"I think we just have to come up more focused as a unit. We have to bring the same energy and the same intensity, and the same effort as if we won."

They brought the energy in the first half Tuesday and carried an eight-point lead throughout the first half and led by four at halftime.

Dallas went up by eight in the third but the Sparks fought back to take a lead in the fourth quarter, despite no head coach Brian Agler (ejected) or Nneka Ogwumike (back).

As usual, Liz Cambage led the Wings with 25 points and 14 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. The Aces will have to control Cambage if they are to have a chance.

The Wings were unable to stop Seattle's Breanna Stewart (28 points and 12 boards) on Sunday. In Tuesday's loss, Candace Parker knocked down 29 points for Los Angeles. The Aces' Wilson could have a field day as she averages 20.1 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…..

                              Mariners 19-10, A’s 18-9, Brewers 14-7, Cubs 14-7, Blue Jays 16-10

                              12) Worst records of teams in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on:

                              White Sox 7-14, Indians 7-14, Orioles 5-12, Royals 6-10, Marlins 8-14.

                              11) Want to be an NBA-level shooter?

Saw a thing on Twitter Wednesday that said how Sacramento Kings’ G Buddy Hield tries to get between 300-500 shots a day outside of practice. When he feels off, he’ll push himself into the 500-700 range. It takes a lot of work to be a really good shooter.

                              10) Detroit Tigers fired pitching coach Chris Bosio Wednesday for making “insensitive comments”, but didn’t elaborate on what the comments were.

From the Detroit News: “…….the move to fire Bosio was both a shock to a team that had come to rely inordinately on his expertise and his psychological skill with Tigers pitchers…….He was astoundingly popular with Tigers pitchers, and of extreme importance to Gardenhire.”

                              9) NBA extended commissioner Adam Silver’s contract through the 2023-24 season.

                              8) Red Sox 9, Angels 6– Red Sox had won their first four games with the Angels this year, outscoring them 36-4. Now it is 45-10.

                              7) Javier Baez hit a grand slam in LA Tuesday night; it was the Cubs’ first grand slam at Dodger Stadium since Bill Madlock hit one on August 28, 1974 off of Don Sutton- those are the Cubs’ only two grand slams ever in Chavez Ravine.

                              6) The brother of New York Giants CB Janoris Jenkins was arrested and charged Wednesday with manslaughter in the death of a 25-year-man whose body was found in the NFL player’s New Jersey home. The deceased was thought to be living in the house, while Janoris Jenkins was spending his offseason in Florida.

                              5) Miami Marlins are bringing up their best pitching prospect Sandy Alcantara to start against the Mets Friday. 22-year old Alcantara is 5-3, 3.71 in 14 starts for AAA New Orleans this season.

                              4) In his first 33 starts for the Mets, Jose Bautista has already batted in every spot in the batting order, except for 9th.

                              3) Angels’ 3B Zack Cozart is having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder; he is expected to miss the rest of the season.

                              2) Washington Nationals in Max Scherzer’s last four starts (0-3, 2.33):

                              L0-2, L0-2, W4-2, L0-1. Not a lot of run support there.

                              1) Ian Happ of the Cubs homered on the first pitch thrown in the major leagues this season, only second time that has ever happened. Dwight Evans also did it, in 1986.
