    — Rockets 116, Warriors 108— Houston is 18-2 when Paul/Harden both play.

    — Kansas State 73, TCU 68— Barry Brown went over 1,000 points in his career.

    — Jazz 125, Clippers 113— Lou Williams is first player since Michael Jordan in ’88 to score 30+ points and get 10+ steals in same game.

    — Three top 10 teams went 0-2 this week: Texas Tech, Wichita State, Oklahoma.

    — Friday night, Lakers set an NBA record for foul line futility when they were 2-14 on the charity stripe in a 99-86 win over visiting Indiana.

    Quote of the Day

“The number of unpaid (betting) tickets in a year is mind-blowing… High 7 figures”
    Nick Bogdanovich, William Hill Sports

    Sunday’s quiz

Who was the Portland Trailblazers’ coach when they won their only NBA title?

    Saturday’s quiz

Columbus is the capital of Ohio.

    Friday’s quiz

Loyola Marymount is coached by Mike Dunlap, who used to coach the Charlotte Bobcats. He is probably also the only NBA coach who was born in Alaska.

    Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

    13) Oklahoma State 83, Oklahoma 81 OT— Trae Young scored 48 points, but it took some effort- he was 8-20 on the arc, 6-19 inside the arc, 12-12 on the line. He had 8 assists, 7 turnovers— no other Sooner scored in double figures.

In his last three games, Young is 20-48 on the arc, 17-39 inside the arc, 17-23 on the line, with 21 assists, 28 turnovers. He has the ball a lot.

Sooners were down 25-6 in this game, fought back to force OT, but Cowboys win to split the Bedlam series this season.

    12) Fresno State-Air Force basketball game was postponed because of the government being shut down— all athletic activities at the Air Force Academy were postponed.

    11) Auburn 79, Georgia 65— Dawgs led 40-26 at halftime, but Auburn started second half on a 31-4 run and won going away.

    10) Kansas freshman Billy Preston isn’t at Kansas anymore; he signed up to play in the Bosnian pro basketball league, figuring he was never going to become eligible to play for the Jayhawks this season, after he was in a car accident and questions arose over who bought the car he was driving.

    9) UNLV 79, Colorado State 74— Rebels scored the last 14 points of the game; if you took five points with the hometown Rams in this game, a push wasn’t what you had in mind. UNLV is 3-0 on road in Mountain West, but 0-3 at home. Go figure.

    8) USC 74, Oregon State 67— Trojans sweep their Oregon trip for first time since 2008.

    7) Thunder 148, Cavaliers 124— Cleveland is 3-18-1 vs spread at home; they’ve lost nine of their last 12 games overall.

    6) I’m totally convinced that in college basketball, one of the most important skills for a player to have is getting loose balls. Not rebounds over the rim, but long rebounds off missed 3-pointers, and deflected passes. There are so many of those in college ball now- the ability to anticipate where those loose balls are going to go often decides who wins games.

    5) Kansas 70, Baylor 67— Jayhawks outscored Baylor 9-0 over last 2:51 to pull this game out; they are 6-1 in Big X, with no wins by more than six points.

    4) Florida 66, Kentucky 64— Wildcats lost three of their last five games, are just 4-3 in SEC.

    3) St Mary’s 72, Pacific 69— Gaels had bit of a hangover after winning at Gonzaga, but they got by the surging Tigers, who had their 5-game winning streak snapped.

    2) Upsets of the Day:
    NC-Wilmington 73 (+8), Towson State 71 OT
    Iowa State (+7) 70, Texas Tech 52
    Coastal Carolina (+7) 74, Troy State 73
New Mexico (+6.5) 79, San Diego State 75
    Portland (+6.5) 72, LMU 65
    Ohio U (+6) 72, Eastern Michigan 66
    Washington (+6) 72, Colorado 62

    1) Oregon 94, UCLA 91— Bill Walton insinuated that the Bruins have internal problems; don’t forget they suspended those two players from the shoplifting debacle in China, and one of those kids was supposed to be a starter.

UCLA was down big in this game, but stormed back and damn near won the game, but instead they’ve lost three games in a row— Bruins are only 4-4 in the Pac-12.

            **************************************

            Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

            13) Patriots 24, Jaguars 20— Tom Brady went to the same high school as Barry Bonds, Lynn Swann— Serra HS in San Mateo, CA; their booster club must have a boatload of money.

Despite all that, my favorite Serra HS alum is former big league infielder Tim Cullen, who won a World Series ring as a reserve infielder with the ’72 Oakland A’s.

Looking up Cullen’s career, which lasted seven years, in February, 1968 he was traded from the Senators to the White Sox, then in August that same year, he was traded back to Washington. In both trades, infielder Ron Hansen went the other way. No idea why.

            12) Patriots’ WR Danny Amendola played the first four years of his career with the St Louis Rams; he missed 22 of 64 games in those years, when the Rams went a combined 17-46-1. Amendola was productive when he played, but he missed way too many games.

In five years since moving on to New England, Amendola has played in 69 of 80 games, for a team that went 63-17— are the Patriots’ trainers that much better than the Rams’ trainers?

            11) Maybe this happens a lot and I’ve just never seen it, but when the Patriots’ game ended and Brady was shaking hands with a guy on Jacksonville, referee Clete Blakeman patted Brady on the back, got his attention, then said something quick to him before he left.

Since when do the referees congratulate players after they win?

            10) In 266 NFL games this season, only 12 times has a team been called for zero or one penalty in a game— New England became the 12th team Sunday.

Last time an NFL team had only one penalty in a playoff game? The Patriots, back in 2011.

            9) Two years ago, for whatever reason, ESPN went out of its way to promote LSU’s freshman star Ben Simmons, to the point where you almost rooted against Simmons, especially when LSU didn’t make the NCAA tournament. It became sickening that ESPN would promote a kid who had no resume— it was all hype.

This year, they’re doing the same thing with Oklahoma’s Trae Young, to the point where the kid has 28 turnovers in his last three games but you feel like ESPN thinks he is the best college ballplayer since Michael Jordan, or at least Simmons. Enough already; let the season play itself out. At least Oklahoma will be in the NCAA’s.

            8) How many movies has Dwayne Johnson made? Seems like The Rock is working his butt off, making a ton of cash. According to IMDB.com, Mr Johnson has made 70 movies/TV shows, not counting all his WWE stuff and he is only 46 years old.

He has 10 projects that have either been completed or announced but not released yet. Have to give him credit, he is making a lot of money while the proverbial iron is hot.

            7) When Nick Foles went to the Pro Bowl after the 2013 season, his OC with the Eagles was Pat Shurmur, who is Minnesota’s OC now and is expected to be named head coach of the Giants Tuesday. Foles could win the Super Bowl, then go back to being the Eagles’ backup next year.

            6) What the hell do the Vikings do now? Bad enough they have to go home and have the Super Bowl played in their own ballpark, but their offseason will really be interesting.

Which of the three QB’s stays in Minnesota? Keenum? Bridgewater? Bradford? Do two of them stay and if so, which one takes a hike? Lot of hard questions need to be answered.

            5) Clemson Tigers are 16-3 and appear headed to the NCAAs, but they lost 2nd-leading scorer Donte Grantham with a torn ACL Saturday— he is out for the year.

            4) Man if you don’t like football, Sunday was a rough day for sports on TV; a few, but not many college hoop games- no real good ones, some golf, the Australian Open, but just a lackluster TV day, except for the conference championship games.

            3) Eagles 38, Vikings 7—During the regular season, Vikings were only team not to allow a defensive TD against them- whoops. Patrick Robinson’s first quarter pick-6 changed all that, and turned the tide in a game that Minnesota led early, 7-0.

            2) NFL trivia— Case Keenum could’ve become the second undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl, but the draft today is only seven rounds— John Unitas was a 9th round pick of the Steelers in 1955, though there were also a lot fewer teams then. Unitas was the 102nd player taken in the ’55 draft, which would put him in the 4th round these days.

Kurt Warner remains the only undrafted QB to start a Super Bowl.

            1) Early line on the Super Bowl: Patriots, -5.5 or 6, bet down already from -7. Some experts are predicting it’ll get back to 7 or 7.5 in the next two weeks.

It is unusual that the Eagles just KO’d the Vikings and now head to Minnesota for the Super Bowl, where it is doubtful they’ll get a warm reception.

2018 handicapping note: Vikings return to Philadelphia in the 2018 regular season.

              • Top 25 Betting Recap
                January 22, 2018

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Villanova (18-1 SU, 13-6 ATS) picked up two more wins and covers this past week, and they face two more unranked opponents in the upcoming week as they look to remain atop the perch of college basketball for another week. 'Nova has posted an impressive 8-2 ATS mark in 10 true road games or neutral-site battles this season. The defense has started to kick in for the Wildcats lately, too, as they're allowing just 63.4 points per game over the past four outings, and the 'under' has hit in four in a row. They're starting to round into championship form on the defensive end after some uneven performances in late December.

Wichita State (15-4 SU, 7-10 ATS) had an ugly week, losing a pair of games to Southern Methodist (14-6 SU, 6-8-1 ATS) at home and Houston (15-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) on the road. Neither of the losses are particularly embarrassing or considered 'bad', especially the one in Houston. The Shockers have simply hit a bump in the road, failing to cover in three in a row, and seven of their past 10 overall. Cold shooting has been the problem, as the Shockers are averaging just 69.7 points per game over their past three, or 13.5 points per game worse than their season average of 83.2 PPG. They'll face two unranked teams (UCF (13-6 SU, 9-5 ATS) and Tulsa (11-9 SU, 11-6 ATS)) this week, as they look to get untracked.

St. Mary's (Calif.) (19-2 SU, 8-8-1 ATS) are expected to make a jump into the Top 25 after winning at Gonzaga (17-4 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) this past week, knocking the Zags from the ranks of the unbeaten in conference play. The Gaels will be vying for their 20th win of the season this week, and they're a solid 8-0 in the West Coast Conference with just one ranked opponent, a rematch with Gonzaga on Feb. 10, remaining on the schedule.

Ohio State (17-4 SU, 11-8 ATS) made their debut in the Top 25 this past week, and they remain tied atop the Big Ten with Purdue (19-2 SU, 14-6 ATS) at 8-0 in conference. The key to the success for the Buckeyes this season has been their defense, as they rank 48th in the country by allowing 66.2 PPG with a 40.6 field-goal percentage allowed. That ranks 44th in the nation. While they do not play an up-tempo style, ranking 78th in the nation with 78.4 PPG, they are a solid 26th in the country with a 48.9 field-goal percentage. Their next four games are at home against unranked foes before a showdown on Feb. 7 in West Lafayette against the Boilermakers.

Oklahoma (14-4 SU, 7-10 ATS) had a forgettable week, as they were tripped up in the hardwood version of Bedlam over the weekend at Oklahoma State (13-6 SU, 6-10 ATS), their third consecutive loss away from Norman. After a 5-1 ATS run, the Sooners are 0-3 ATS across their past three outings with a visit from Kansas (16-3 SU, 10-8 ATS) looming. A trip to Alabama (13-6 SU, 10-7-1 ATS) will not be a walk in the park this week, either, as the Big 12 and Southeastern have some interesting cross-conference battles on tap next weekend.

Kentucky (14-5 SU, 8-11 ATS) lost on the recruiting trail this week, as dunk specialist Zion Williamson chose Duke (17-2 SU, 11-6 ATS) over the Wildcats. And UK might be on the verge of tumbling out of the Top 25 after a pair of losses. The Wildcats are also just 1-4 ATSA over their past five outings, and they have failed to cover in each of their past three overall at Rupp Arena. One thing that has been consistent is the 'under', going 5-2 over the past seven for Coach Cal's bunch.

NCAAB Game of the Day: West Virginia at Texas Christian betting preview and odds
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WVU's Jevon Carter is averaging a team-high 16.9 points and is shooting 41.4 percent, but his numbers dip to 14.9 points and 35.9 percent from the field in Big 12 play.

No. 7 West Virginia Mountaineers at No. 25 Texas Christian Horned Frogs (+1, 160)

West Virginia will try to run its all-time record against TCU to 12-0 when the No. 7 Mountaineers visit the No. 25 Horned Frogs for a Big 12 game on Monday night. West Virginia bounced back from back-to-back losses to No. 8 Texas Tech and No. 10 Kansas and defeated Texas 86-51 on Saturday night.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon drew a second technical foul on Saturday night and was ejected in the second half of a 73-68 loss to Kansas State, the fourth loss in the past four games for TCU, which was ranked as high as No. 8 in the coaches' poll the week following Christmas. The Horned Frogs enter this week tied for last in the Big 12 with Baylor and Iowa State, the only teams TCU has defeated in conference play this season. The Horned Frogs had their best chance to beat the Mountaineers at TCU last season, but Daxter Miles Jr. made a free throw with 4.8 seconds left to break a 60-60 tie and West Virginia held on for the one-point win. Miles is back and so are the two leading scorers from last season, forward Esa Ahmad and point guard Jevon Carter.

                          TV:
                          9 p.m. ET, ESPN

                          LINE HISTORY:
West Virginia opened as one-point road favorites and, as of publication time for this preview, that pointspread has yet to move. The total hit betting boards at 160 and has also been steady.

                          ABOUT WEST VIRGINIA (16-3 SU, 8-7 ATS, 6-9 O/U):
Carter is averaging a team-high 16.9 points and is shooting 41.4 percent, but his numbers dip to 14.9 points and 35.9 percent from the field in Big 12 play. Carter's strength is on defense, however, and the former Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year is averaging 3.3 steals a game, which ranks second in the nation through Sunday. Ahmad has played three games since coming off an 18-game absence because of academic suspension and the 6-foot-8 senior is averaging 13.8 points and six rebounds in those games.

                          ABOUT TCU (14-5 SU, 9-9 ATS, 13-5 O/U):
West Virginia will need to find an answer for TCU's strength down low, particularly against 6-foot-7 guard Kenrich Williams and 6-foot-11 forward Vladimir Brodziansky. Williams has reached double figures in points and rebounds nine times this season, and is averaging 14.7 points and a team-leading 9.4 rebounds. Brodziansky averages a team-high 15.4 points and is shooting 60.5 percent from the floor, but has been even more productive in conference play, averaging 18.7 points, including three games with 20 or more.

                          MATCHUP CHART:

                          TRENDS:

                          * Mountaineers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.
                          * Horned Frogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Monday games.
                          * Under is 5-1 in Mountaineers' last 6 vs. Big 12.
                          * Over is 9-1 in Horned Frogs' last 10 vs. Big 12.
                          * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

                          TIP-IN BETTING TIDBITS:

                          - Brodziansky ranks fourth all-time at TCU in career blocks (147).

                          - TCU leads the Big 12 and ranks second in the nation at 20 assists per game.

                          - A victory for West Virginia would be the 836th for coach Bob Huggins, moving him into seventh place on the NCAA career list.

                          CONSENSUS:
Consensus numbers show 73 percent of players like the road favorite West Virginia Mountaneers to cover the spread.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Desmond Bane scored eight of his 15 points in just over a minute early in the second half, and TCU beat No. 7 West Virginia 82-73 on Monday night.

The Horned Frogs (15-5, 3-5 Big 12) got their first home win over a Top 10 team in nearly five years on the same day they dropped out of the AP Top 25 to end an eight-week run as a ranked team.

Jevon Carter had 16 points and Sagaba Konate 14 for West Virginia (16-4, 5-3), as all five starters scored in double figures while losing for the third time in four games. Daxter Miles Jr. had 12 points, Lamont West 11 and Wesley Harris 10.

Alex Robinson had 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for TCU, and Kouat Noi had 13 points with three 3-pointers before being ejected because of a flagrant foul with just over 10 minutes left. Vladimir Brodziansky had 14 points, and Kenrich Williams had 14 rebounds.

                            No. 6 MICHIGAN STATE 87, ILLINOIS 74

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Miles Bridges scored 31 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. had 21 points and 11 rebounds and No. 6 Michigan State got a harder-than-expected win over Illinois.

Michigan State (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten) shot 68.2 percent, which set a record at State Farm Center for an opponent's shooting percentage. Illinois shot 43.1 percent.

Kipper Nichols led Illinois (10-11, 0-8) with a career-high 27 points. Trent Frazier and Leron Black added 13 and 12, respectively.

Michigan State turned the ball over 25 times. It was the third straight game in which the Spartans gave it away more than 20 times and still won by double digits.

VIRGINIA TECH 80, No. 10 NORTH CAROLINA 69

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Justin Robinson scored 19 points and Virginia Tech pulled away in the second half to beat North Carolina.

Ahmed Hill added 18 points for Virginia Tech (14-6, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Hill scored seven in a row to start the decisive 13-3 burst, which turned a 51-48 lead into a 64-51 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining. Kerry Blackshear Jr. added 16 points.

Joel Berry and Luke Maye scored 23 points each for the Tar Heels (16-5, 5-3). North Carolina never got closer than eight points in the final eight minutes.

The Hokies ended the first half on a 15-2 run to lead 39-32 at the break. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Berry sparked the Tar Heels early in the second half, but then Hill's 3-pointer started his personal 7-0 run.

As the final horn sounded, fans that had been chanting ''just like football'' streamed onto the court.

                            No. 13 OHIO STATE 64, NEBRASKA 59

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Keita Bates-Diop scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half and Ohio State beat Nebraska, the fourth victory for the surging Buckeyes in the last eight days.

The back-and-forth game had seven lead changes in the second half. A pair of foul shots by Nebraska's James Palmer Jr. cut Ohio State's lead to four with 2:19 remaining, but the Cornhuskers couldn't pull any closer.

Jae'Sean Tate put the Buckeyes (18-4, 9-0 Big Ten) up by six with a layup with 1:02 left, and a pair of foul shots by Kaleb Wesson stretched it to eight. Palmer hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left, but Nebraska ran out of time.

                            Palmer had a career-high 34 points. Nebraska (14-8, 5-4) was fresh off a 20-point upset of then-No. 23 Michigan on Thursday.

Ohio State surpassed its win total for all of last season. Earlier in the day, it moved from No. 22 to No. 13 in the AP Top 25, its highest position since 2014.

                            • Kentucky falls out of AP Top 25 poll
                              January 22, 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Kentucky is out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly four years while another bunch of Wildcats - Villanova - maintained their hold on No. 1.

Kentucky slid out of Monday's latest poll from No. 18 after losses to South Carolina and Florida, snapping a 30-game home winning streak for the Wildcats in Southeastern Conference play. That dropped coach John Calipari's Wildcats out for the first time since March 2014 and snapped a 68-week stretch in the poll.

''I'm not panicked,'' Calipari said Monday. ''I coach at Kentucky, I always have young guys. I don't have them this young, but they're really young. They're learning to trust each other. I've got to get them to trust each other on both sides of the ball and it just might take more time.''

The top three of Villanova, Virginia and Purdue remained the same, with the Wildcats (18-1) remaining firmly in place by collecting 63 of 65 first-place votes. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers (18-1) and the Boilermakers (19-2) have combined to win 25 straight games, 19 by double-digit margins, and split the remaining first-place votes.

Duke inched up a spot to No. 4, while Kansas jumped five spots to No. 5 after winning at West Virginia. Michigan State, West Virginia, Xavier, Cincinnati and reigning national champion North Carolina rounded out the top 10, which saw three teams - Oklahoma, Wichita State and Texas Tech - each lose twice last week to take big tumbles.

Kentucky (14-5, 4-3 SEC) started the year at No. 5 and remained in the top 10 until Christmas Day, but the Wildcats have lost three of five overall and are 0-2 against ranked teams this year.

They also rank outside the top 25 in KenPom's adjusted offensive and defensive national rankings through Sunday's games. Calipari's teams in Lexington have finished outside the top 25 in both categories only once before: the 2012-13 season that ended with 12 losses and a first-round NIT loss to Robert Morris.

Then again, the last Kentucky team to fall out of the AP poll in 2014 went from being a 10-loss disappointment to playing for the NCAA championship in the span of weeks.

                              PURDUE'S SURGE

The Boilermakers (8-0 Big Ten) have won 15 straight to remain at No. 3, their highest since being ranked No. 2 in March 1988. They have won three straight Big Ten games by at least 23 points for the first time in school history.

                              THE LONG CLIMB BACK

Arizona (16-4, 6-1 Pac-12) went from ranked No. 2 to unranked in the span of a week in November after a disastrous 0-3 showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, including a 25-point loss to Purdue - which started the Boilermakers' run - in the eight-team tournament's seventh-place game.

But the Wildcats have won 13 of 14 since and check in this week at No. 11, their highest ranking since falling out.

                              TOP RISERS

No. 13 Ohio State (17-4, 7-0 Big Ten) is up nine spots for the week's biggest leap. The Buckeyes checked in at No. 22 last week for their first AP Top 25 ranking since March 2015.

UNC matched Kansas' five-spot jump to No. 10 after beating Clemson last week at home.

                              LONGEST SLIDES

Wichita State's first two losses in its new American Athletic Conference home had the Shockers drop 10 spots to No. 17 for the week's biggest fall.

Two Big 12 teams also took big tumbles after two-loss weeks. Oklahoma and freshman star Trae Young fell eight spots to No. 12 after losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma State, while No. 14 Texas Tech slid six spots after losses to Texas and Iowa State.

Arizona State also fell five spots to No. 21 and has lost four of seven since a 12-0 start.

                              NEWCOMERS

Saint Mary's led the newcomers at No. 16 after winning at Gonzaga in West Coast Conference play last week. The Gaels, led by Jock Landale, were ranked for three November polls before falling out but have won 14 straight.

No. 20 Florida - which reached No. 5 in December before falling out - and No. 23 Nevada both returned to the poll after being ranked earlier this season, while No. 24 Rhode Island checked in for the first time this season.

                              SLIDING OUT

In addition to Kentucky, Seton Hall (No. 19), TCU (No. 24) and Miami (No. 25) fell out of this week's rankings.

                              • Tuesday’s 6-pack

                                — Kentucky’s basketball team is out of the Top 25 for the first time in four years.

                                — Nick Foles in the second half Sunday: 11-of-11, 159 yards, 2 TD. Not bad for a backup.

                                — Eldrick Woods is playing golf this week in the PGA tournament at Torrey Pinex; over/under on worst round he shoots this week: 74.5

                                — TCU 82, West Virginia 73— Big X schedule is tough travel for the Mountaineers.

                                — Virginia Tech 80, North Carolina 69— Lethargic effort by the Tar Heels.

                                Quote of the Day

“I don’t sell, when you come here: ‘The university and the state will take care of you for the rest of your life.’ You may buy that, and I’ve got some great property and some swampland down in Florida to sell you too. Every one of us in this country is based on, you have to take care of your self, prepare yourself, and then when you make it you make sure you’re helping and along the way you’re bringing other people with you.

That’s what we’re trying to do: just give these guys the best opportunity. We’re not trying to say that this university or state will take care of you for the rest of your life. There’s no socialism here. This stuff is you have to go do it and we’re going to help you do it. Some like that, some don’t like that.”

                                Tuesday’s quiz

Before DeMarcus Cousins did it Monday night, who was last NBA player with 30 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists in a game?
                                (Hint: It happened in 2010)

                                Monday’s quiz

Emmitt Smith and Thurman Thomas share the record for most postseason touchdowns in the NFL, with 21.

                                Sunday’s quiz

Jack Ramsay was the Portland Trailblazers’ coach when they won their only NBA title.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                                13) Whats with NBA teams and drama? Milwaukee Bucks fired coach Jason Kidd, who was 139-152 in 3.5 years, but 22-21 this year. News of Kidd’s firing got out before the team told Kidd, and star Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t happy about it, which is never good for an NBA team, when your star player is ticked off.

Antetokounmpo called the coach and asked him if he wanted him to help save his job, which apparently was before Kidd knew he was losing his job. Oy.

If the season ended as I type this, the Bucks would be the #8 seed in the East.

                                12) Washington Wizards players recently had a players-only meeting; here are two quotes about that event:

                                First, John Wall:
“We had our team meeting. A couple guys took it the negative way and it hurt our team. Instead of taking it in a positive way like we did in the past and using it to build our team up, it kind of set us back a little bit.”

                                Second, Bradley Beal:
“It was tough. I try to keep all our stuff as personal as possible but I think in a way not everybody got a chance to speak whenever they wanted to. They didn’t want to bring up an issue or something they had a problem with on the team. Regardless of what may be going on, as men we’ve got to be able to accept what the next man says, be respectful about it and move on from it. I think it was one of those situations where we didn’t necessarily get everything that we wanted to get accomplished.”

                                11) In the last 16 Super Bowls, underdogs are 11-5 against the spread.

                                10) This will be 4th Super Bowl in last five years with two #1 seeds. From 1994-2012, #1 seeds met in only one of 19 Super Bowls.

                                9) In their last five games, New England has been called for nine penalties for 110 yards; their opponents have been called for 29 penalties for 390 yards.

                                8) Tom Brady has more wins (27) and passing TDs (68) in postseason than Nick Foles has wins (24) and passing TDs (66) in his entire NFL career.

                                7) Minnesota Vikings last made the Super Bowl after the 1976 season, when I was a senior in high school; since then, they’re 0-6 in NFC championship games.

                                6) Last years, $138.5M was wagered on the Super Bowl, just in Nevada- thats a record, one that is expected to be broken this year.

                                5) Knicks/Rangers both played in Staples Center Sunday; it is first time Knicks/Rangers played road games in the same arena on the same day since 1957.

                                4) Miami Heat’s James Johnson scored five points in 0:04 Sunday night, as Heat erased a 105-100 deficit in the last minute at Charlotte, eventually winning 106-105. Not easy to score five points in 0:04, but layup-steal-3-pointer did the trick.

                                3) Carolina Panthers hired Carolina DC Steve Wilks as their new head coach; he was only a coordinator for one year, but has been a coach in college/NFL since 1995.

Cleveland Browns hired Todd Haley as their new offensive coordinator; hopefully he got promised that the Browns will draft a quarterback in April.

                                2) From Christopher Kamka, NBC Sports, Chicago: In 2017, Chris Gimenez was the first major leaguer to catch 5+ games and also pitch in 5+ games in the same season since the Phillies’ Bill Harman in 1941. Gimenez pitched in five games, caught in 59 games last year.

1— New Jersey Giants hired Pat Shurmur as head coach; he’ll keep DC Steve Spagnuolo, since he was Spagnuolo’s OC in St Louis is 2009-10. Rams improved from 1-15 in ’09 to 7-9 in ’10, then Shurmur became the head coach of the Browns in ‘11, which obviously didn’t go well (9-23).
