13) Webster’s defines scapegoat this way: “a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.”

Pittsburgh Steelers lost a home playoff game 45-42 Sunday; there was much unrest in Steelers’ Nation, so a scapegoat was found— offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

You would think defensive coordinator would take some grief, but no. Maybe when the QB, a future Hall of Famer, tells the media that he isn’t allowed to audible to a QB sneak, maybe that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

12) Speaking of quarterbacks not being allowed to audible, when Mike Martz ran the Rams’ offense, his QB’s, Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger, weren’t allowed to audible either. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, especially when you have a veteran QB, but coaches have big egos, too.

11) TCU’s best guard, Jaylen Fisher, is out indefinitely after hurting his knee in practice. TCU is 2-4 in Big X, with five of the six games decided by 5 or less points- 3 of the 5 games went to OT.

10) Shaquille O’Neal’s son Shareef is a 6-7 power forward who is committed to play for Arizona next year- he is considered a 4-star (out of 5) recruit.

9) South Carolina 76, Kentucky 68— Wildcats led by 14 points with 11:30 left, lost in Columbia brickfest Tuesday where teams combined to go 6-34 on arc. Kentucky used nine players; six freshmen (five of them started) and three sophomores.

8) Thru Tuesday’s college basketball games, the national average on free throws was 70.9%, which would be the highest it has been the last 17 years, and 3rd year in row it has gone up.

**Saint Mary’s at Gonzaga**

-- As usual, first place in the WCC will be at stake Thursday night when Saint Mary’s visits Spokane to take on Gonzaga. Both schools are 6-0 in the conference play. As of late Wednesday night, most betting shops had Gonzaga (16-3 straight up, 9-6 against the spread) listed as a 7.5-point favorite after the number opened at 9.5. The total was at 152.5.

-- Mark Few’s team is unbeaten in 10 home games with a 5-2 spread record. The Bulldogs are 3-1 ATS in four games as single-digit favorites, 1-0 ATS in their only single-digit home ‘chalk’ spot.

-- Gonzaga has won six in a row while going 4-1-1 ATS since a 72-70 loss at San Diego State as a six-point favorite on Dec. 21. The Bulldogs are off a 75-65 win at San Francisco as 14-point road favorites. They inched ahead of the number only once with a 62-48 advantage with 9:53 remaining, but the Dons were the right side. Johnathan Williams led the ‘Zags with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. Josh Perkins and Silas Melson chipped in 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Rui Hachimura finished with 10 points, eight boards and three blocks.

-- Gonzaga is ranked 13th in the latest Associated Press Top 25, 57th in the RPI Rankings and sixth at KenPom.com. Few’s club has a 4-2 record against the RPI Top 50 and a 4-3 mark versus the Top 100. The Bulldogs have neutral-court wins over Ohio St. (86-59) and Texas (76-71). They also own blowout victories vs. Creighton (91-74) at home and at Washington (97-70). The ‘Zags’ L’s came vs. Florida (111-105 in double overtime in Portland), vs. Villanova and at San Diego St.

-- Williams leads Gonzaga in scoring (14.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.2 RPG) and has blocked 1.1 shots per outing. Perkins is averaging 13.6 points, 5.5 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. The senior guard is shooting at a career-high 45.0 percent clip from long distance. Five Bulldogs are averaging double figures including Zach Norvell (12.2 PPG), Killian Tillie (11.8 PPG), Hachimura (10.7 PPG) and Melson (10.6 PPG). Melson has 27 steals, a 49/23 assist-to-turnover ratio and is hitting 90.6 percent of his free throws. Tillie is averaging 6.0 RPG and is making 55.3 percent of his field-goal attempts.

-- Saint Mary’s (17-2 SU, 7-7 ATS) leads the nation in field-goal percentage, shooting at a 52.4 percent clip. Randy Bennett’s team is ranked 12th in the country in 3-point accuracy (41.3%) and 15th in free-throw shooting (77.7%). The Gaels are ranked 35th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 65.4 points per game.

-- Saint Mary’s has won all six of its road games while going 5-1 ATS. The Gaels are playing their third road game in seven days after posting wins at Pepperdine (91-67) and at Santa Clara (81-57). They took the Waves behind the woodshed in Malibu this past Saturday, winning by 24 as 16-point road favorites. Jock Landale was the catalyst with 321 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Emmett Naar dished out 14 assists while Jordan Ford scored 20 points and dished out three assists without a turnover. Tanner Krebs knocked down all four of his 3-point attempts in a 16-point effort. Krebs also had seven rebounds, three assists and one steal.

-- Landale is averaging a double-double and paces Saint Mary’s in scoring (21.7 PPG), rebounding (10.3 RPG), FG percentage (65.3%) and blocks (0.8 BPG). Naar (11.2 PPG) is second in the nation in assists (9.4 APG) and sports a 178/54 assists-to-turnover ratio. He has a team-high 0.8 steals per game and is making 85.5 percent of his FTs. Calvin Hermanson is averaging 12.2 PPG and is splashing the nets at a 44.6 percent clip from 3-point range.

-- Saint Mary’s is an underdog for the first time this season. Bennett’s team is ranked No. 42 in the RPI Rankings. The Gaels have only faced one RPI Top-50 foe, losing an 83-81 decision to Georgia (RPI #41) in Fullerton, Calif. They’re 3-1 against the Top 100 with home wins over New Mexico State and Dayton, in addition to a win at BYU. Their other loss also came in Fullerton against Washington State.

-- Saint Mary’s is ranked 19th at KenPom.com. The Gaels have additional victories at California (74-63), at San Jose St. (79-61) and vs. Harvard (89-71) in Fullerton.

-- Saint Mary’s games were on a 5-0 ‘under’ run until the ‘over’ hit in its past two outings. The ‘under’ is 9-6 overall for the Gaels, 3-3 in their six road assignments.

-- The ‘over’ is 9-7 overall for the Gonzaga despite a 5-2 run for the ‘under’ in its last seven games. The ‘over’ is 5-2 for the Bulldogs at home.

-- The ‘under’ is 11-2 in the last 13 games of this rivalry, 18-4 in the last 22 games played at Gonzaga.

-- Gonzaga has won four in a row over Saint Mary’s both SU and ATS, with each victory coming by double-digit margins. The Bulldogs are 8-2 SU and 9-1 ATS in the past 10 encounters with the Gaels, who last won in this rivalry on Feb. 20 of 2016.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**UCLA at Oregon State**

-- UCLA (13-5 SU, 8-10 ATS) is in a third-place tie with USC in the Pac-12 standings, as the crosstown rivals are both 4-2 in league play. The Bruins are one game behind conference-leading Arizona and one-half game behind second-place Stanford.

-- As of early this morning, most books had UCLA installed as a two-point road favorite with a total of 148.

-- Steve Alford’s squad is 1-2 both SU and ATS in three road games. UCLA has won six of its last eight games, compiling a 5-3 spread record in the process. The Bruins dropped a 68-59 decision to Colorado this past Saturday as 11.5-point home favorites. Thomas Welsh made 9-of-10 FGAs and finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, but Aaron Holiday was held to 10 points and he had four assists compared to six turnovers. Holiday made just 4-o-13 shots from the field and 1-of-4 from 3-point range. Kris Wilkes had 10 points and nine rebounds, but he was 3-of-11 from the field and 1-of-6 from downtown.

-- Holiday leads UCLA in scoring (18.9 PPG), assists (5.2 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG), while Welsh (12.8 PPG) paces the Bruins in rebounding (10.7 RPG) and FG percentage (49.1%). Wilkes is averaging 13.7 points and 5.5 RPG, while Jaylen Hands (11.6 PPG) and Prince Ali (10.3 PPG) are also averaging in double figures.

-- UCLA is No. 49 in the RPI, going 2-3 versus the Top 50 and 3-5 against the Top 100. Alford’s team has home wins over Washington and Utah, and it beat Kentucky for a second straight year by an 83-75 score in New Orleans on Dec. 23.

-- Oregon State (10-7 SU, 7-10 ATS) has won eight of its 10 home games but has struggled to a 3-7 spread record. The Beavers are home underdogs for the second time, beating Oregon as 2.5-point home ‘dogs in their first such spot.

-- Oregon State is No. 153 in the RPI with an 0-2 record against Top-50 foes and a 2-5 ledger versus Top-100 opponents. The Beavers have home scalps of Colorado (76-57) and Oregon (76-64). They’ve lost a pair of games by two points apiece, falling 77-75 at Arizona St. and 66-64 vs. Utah in Corvallis.

-- Oregon State is looking to avoid a three-game losing streak. After beating the Ducks on Jan. 5, the Beavers lost at Arizona and at ASU this past week. However, they have covered the spread in three consecutive games and four of their last five. OSU took the cash as a 15-point underdog in a 62-53 loss at Arizona and easily got the money in Saturday’s 77-75 loss in Tempe as a 12-point ‘dog. Stephen Thompson Jr., the son of Syracuse’s sixth man when it advanced to the finals of the 1987 NCAA Tournament before getting knocked off by Bobby Knight’s third national title team at Indiana on Keith Smart’s last-second baseline jumper in New Orleans, scored a team-best 21 points for OSU. Thompson made 5-of-10 launches from beyond the arc and contributed three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Tres Tinkle added 18 points, 10 boards and four assists. Drew Eubanks and Ethan Thompson scored 11 points apiece. OSU allowed a 13-point lead at the under-12 television timeout to get away. The Beavers did a sensational defensive job on ASU star guard Tra Holder, who was held to four points on 1-of-9 shooting from the field. Holder (20.9 PPG) is the Pac-12’s leading scorer.

-- Tinkle, the head coach’s son who was averaging 20.2 points and 8.3 RPG before going down with a season-ending injury after playing only six games last year, is averaging team-bests in scoring (18.2 PPG), rebounding (7.4 RPG) and FT percentage (86.4%) and is tied for the team lead in assists (3.5 APG). Stephen Thompson Jr. (16.5 PPG, 3.5 APG) and Eubanks (13.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG) are also scoring in double figures.

-- The ‘over’ is 10-8 overall for the Bruins, 3-0 in their road contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 9-7-1 for OSU, 5-5 in their home games. The ‘under’ is 4-0-1 in the Beavers’ past five games.

-- Fox Sports 1 will provide the broadcast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- TCU announced Wednesday that sophomore guard Jaylen Fisher is out indefinitely due to a knee injury. Fisher is scheduled to have knee surgery today after sustaining the injury at Tuesday’s practice. The starting point guard for the Horned Frogs is averaging 12.3 points and 5.4 assists per game. Nevertheless, TCU snapped a three-game losing streak with last night’s 96-73 win over Iowa St. Vladimir Brodzianksy led the way with 26 points.

-- SMU picked up its first road win of the year last night when it captured an 83-78 win at Wichita State. The Mustangs won outright as 9.5 underdogs, hooking up money-line backers with a sweet +375 return (paid $375 on $100 wagers).

-- Alabama handed Auburn its first loss since Nov. 17 and ended the Tigers’ 14-game winning steak Wednesday night at Coleman Coliseum. Even without star guard Collin Sexton (abdominal injury), Avery Johnson’s team won a 76-71 decision as a four-point home underdog. Freshman guard John Petty stole the show by exploding for a game-high 27 points on 8-of-13 marksmanship from long distance. Dazon Ingram made 10-fo-13 FTs and finished with 16 points for the Crimson Tide.

-- KeVaughn Allen finally busted out of a miserable slump in Florida’s 88-73 win over Arkansas as a 6.5-point home favorite. The former star at North Little Rock, Ark., had been held to seven points or fewer in four straight games and had scored in double figures only three times in UF’s last 10 games. Allen erupted for 28 points on the Razorbacks, draining 6-of-7 shots from 3-point land and 8-of-12 from the field. Jalen Hudson finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot. Hudson buried 4-of-8 triples and the Gators went 13-of-25 (52.0%) from downtown. Egor Koulechov had 12 points and eight rebounds. Mike Anderson’s team fell to 2-4 in the SEC play and 0-4 both SU and ATS on the road.

-- Florida senior center John Egbunu practiced Monday for the first time this season. Egbunu tore his ACL in a Valentine’s Day win at Auburn last season. Mike White told the media Tuesday that the big man’s timetable to return remains late January. Egbunu’s muscle and size make him a force as an interior defender, and that’s exactly what the Gators need down the stretch. 12) Six of the top 21 college basketball teams lost Wednesday night. Been a weird year.

11) I see that they’re moving up the start of college basketball season next year, up three days to November 6, which will also be Election Day. They’re trying to get the start of college hoop out of football’s shadows— hopefully there won’t be any MAC football games on TV that Tuesday.

10) NBC television is advertising the Olympics a lot- one of the ads has an athlete saying how every kid’s dream is to be in the Olympics. I can honestly say, not once did I ever dream of being in the Olympics, especially the Winter Olympics. Good thing, since I was a lousy athlete, but my idea of fun isn’t slalom skiing or anything to do with cold weather.

9) Funny story on Twitter this week about how a Vikings fan named Sara Zeigler got so excited when Stefon Diggs caught that pass at the end of the game Sunday night, she jumped on her couch and landed on her remote control, which changed the station on the TV before Diggs scored, so she didn’t see the winning TD she was so excited about, until one of the 1,000 replays after the game.

Moral of story: Remote controls are very valuable; never jump on them.

There have been numerous stories about people waiting for the PAT to be tried/not tried after that Minnesota touchdown, since the pointspread hung in the balance. Had to be fun to be in Las Vegas sportsbook for that.

8) Philadelphia Eagles went for it on 4th down 26 times this year, most in the NFL- they made the first down/TD on 17 of those 26 tries.

7) Shohei Ohtani is both a pitcher and a hitter; the Angels’ newest free agent acquisition has caused the folks at CBSSports.com some grief this winter, as they worked to figure out how Ohtani will be dealt with in the fantasy league website’s stats column.

Apparently the problem has been resolved; doesn’t sound like Ohtani will be in the lineup enough to merit his inclusion as a fantasy league hitter. Albert Pujols DH’s for the Angels, so it Ohtani is the DH, Pujols has to play first base? Not ideal.

6) Cavaliers 104, Magic 103— Cavaliers blew a 23-point lead but survived the dismal Magic. Cleveland is 16-5 at home, 3-17-1 against the spread.

5) Surprising stat: Of the last eight Stanley Cup champs, only one of the eight (’17 Penguins) finished higher than 15th in NHL in power play efficiency during the regular season.

4) Creighton F Martin Krampelj will miss the rest of the season with a major knee injury; he’s started every game for the Bluejays, scoring 11.9 ppg, grabbing 8 rebounds a game- a big loss.

3) When I was a little kid 100 or so years ago (late 60’s), they built a restaurant near our house— Valle’s Steakhouse. Place had this huge, Vegas-like sign in front of it, and it was a fancy place. Cloth napkins, all that.

Valle’s went out of business a long time ago; the building is a college now, Bryant & Stratton College, and I found out this week that Bryant & Stratton is starting a basketball program. They haven’t said where they’re going to play their games. If I remember right, Bryant & Stratton used to be called Albany Business College, and it was located in the city of Albany.

I’m not 100% sure that ABC became Bryant & Stratton, but one came to being when the other closed its doors.

2) Anyway, Albany Business College had a good junior college basketball team back in the day; Willard Rice was the coach— I went to a camp once run by Coach Rice and his son Steve. They had a team when I was in college (late 70’s)- they used to play the Albany JV team every year, so this is life coming full circle. From looks of things, Bryant & Stratton is a 4-year school now.

1) One last story about Valle’s Steakhouse; one summer, my dad’s family was in town to visit and we all went to Valle’s for dinner. Probably 12-14 people, so a big group. The waitress brings a lot of dinners out at the same time, and a small dish slipped at the top of her load— she went to grab it………and there was a very loud noise. Food scattered everywhere.

I’m pretty sure the waitress was fired before the dishes stopped spinning around; as an annoying 10-year old, I was sure it was the funniest thing I’d ever seen, even if I did have to wait to eat a while longer. It was tremendous- stuff like that didn’t happen at Carroll’s Hamburgers. my preferred place to eat when I was 10.

**Indiana at Michigan State**

-- Michigan State (16-3 straight up, 11-8 against the spread) has failed to cover the spread in three straight games and is suddenly playing its worst basketball of the season. The slide started on Jan. 7 when the Spartans took woodshed treatment at Ohio State, losing 80-64 as 6.5-point road favorites. Three days later at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Tom Izzo’s team had to get a late free throw and a defensive stop on the last possession of regulation just to force overtime as a 22-point favorite vs. Rutgers. MSU would knock off the Scarlet Knights by a 76-72 count in OT. Then last Saturday (1/13/18), arch-rival Michigan came to Breslin and captured an 82-72 win as a 9.5-point underdog.

-- Michigan State led Michigan by three at intermission and held its biggest advantage (five) in the opening minute of the second half, but it was all Wolverines after that. Moritz Wagner dropped a game-high 27 points on the Spartans, who made only 3-of-13 (23.1%) attempts from 3-point range. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 19 points and blocked six shots in the losing effort. Miles Bridges finished with 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Cassius Winston had 11 points. Nick Ward was in foul trouble all day, contributing only four points and five rebounds in just 14 minutes of playing time.

-- Michigan State is No. 1 in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (35.0%) and is ranked 22nd in scoring ‘D’ (64.0 points per game). The Spartans are third in the country in FG percentage (51.7%), 15th in 3-point accuracy (41.2%) and 17th in scoring (85.2 PPG).

-- Michigan State is ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and No. 35 in the RPI Rankings. Izzo’s bunch is 1-3 versus the RPI Top 50 and 5-3 against the Top 100. The Spartans have neutral-court wins over North Carolina and UConn, in addition to home wins over the likes of Notre Dame, Nebraska and Maryland.

-- Bridges, a true sophomore forward, is averaging 16.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game. He has a 56/34 assist-to-turnover ratio. Ward (14.3 PPG, 1.6 BPG) leads the team in rebounding (7.5 RPG) and FG percentage (69.7%), while Joshua Langford (13.5 PPG) is draining 46.2 percent of his 3-balls. Winston (12.7 PPG) is hitting 52.4 percent of his treys and has a 130/48 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Jackson (11.5 PPG) paces MSU in steals (0.8 SPG) and blocks (3.2 BPG).

-- MSU has won 11 of its 12 home games while posting an 8-4 spread record. The Spartans are 7-3 ATS in 10 games as double-digit home favorites.

-- As of early Thursday night, most betting shops had the Spartans listed as 15.5-point favorites with a total of 140.

-- Indiana (11-7 SU, 9-9 ATS) has lost four of its five road games both SU and ATS. The Hoosiers failed to cover the number in their lone game as double-digit underdogs, losing 84-68 at Seton Hall as 11-point ‘dogs. This is obviously their richest spot as ‘dogs this year.

-- Archie Miller’s first IU squad is playing its best basketball of the season, winning three in a row and five of its past six both SU and ATS. The Hoosiers are off Sunday’s 66-46 win over Northwestern as three-point home favorites. Robert Johnson was the catalyst with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. Josh Newkirk added 12 points. IU held the Wildcats to an abysmal 15-of-56 shooting performance (26.8%) from the field.

-- Indiana is No. 104 in the RPI Rankings, going winless in four games against Top-50 foes and 2-4 versus the Top 100. The Hoosiers beat Notre Dame on a neutral floor and won at Minnesota.

-- Junior forward Juwan Morgan leads IU in scoring (15.6 PPG), rebounding (7.4 RPG) and blocked shots (1.4 BPG). Morgan is making 59.3 percent of his FGAs. Johnson (13.6 PPG) is IU’s only other double-figure scorer.

-- Indiana lost sophomore power forward De’Ron Davis to a season-ending injury two weeks ago. Davis was averaging 9.6 points and 4.3 RPG while pacing the Hoosiers in FG percentage (61.5%) and blocks (1.5 BPG).

-- The ‘under’ is on a 5-1 run for IU in its last six games. Totals have been an overall wash (9-9) for the Hoosiers, but they’ve seen the ‘under’ go 4-1 in their five road assignments.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-7 overall for the Spartans, 9-2 in their home games. The ‘over’ is on a 7-2 run for -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

**St. Bonaventure at Davidson**

-- As of early Thursday night, most books had Davidson (9-7 SU, 7-8 ATS) listed as a four-point favorite with a total of 145.

-- Davidson is in second place in the Atlantic 10 with a 4-1 record in league play, leaving it 1.5 games back of Rhode Island with its 6-0 mark in A-10 action. The Wildcats have won four games in a row and has covered the number in three straight.

-- Bob McKillop’s team is unbeaten in five home games with a 2-2 spread record.

-- Davidson dealt out a seal clubbing Sunday when it won 75-45 at Fordham as an eight-point road favorite. Jon Axel Gudmundsson led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists compared to only one turnover. Gudmundsson drained 3-of-5 attempts from 3-point range. Kellan Grady added 14 points and three assists without a turnover, burying 4-of-5 launches from downtown. Oskar Michelsen and Peyton Aldridge were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

-- Davidson is No. 130 in the RPI, going 0-3 versus the Top 50 and 0-4 against the Top 100. All three defeats against Top-50 opponents came by double-digit margins, although the loss to New Mexico St. (RPI #55) on a neutral court was a 69-68 setback. The Wildcats have zero victories over opponents with an RPI of No. 189 or better. Furthermore, they’ve lost three games to team with an RPI of 187 or worse.

-- Davidson is led by Aldridge, the senior forward who is tops on his team in scoring (19.8 PPG), rebounding (6.9 RPG) and blocks (0.6 BPG). Gudmundsson (14.6 PPG) leads the Wildcats in assists (4.6 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG), with a 74/30 assist-to-turnover ratio. Grady (15.8 PPG) is shooting at a 40.2 percent from long distance.

-- St. Bonaventure (12-5 SU, 7-7 ATS) went 10-2 in non-conference play, but it is only 1.5 games out of the A-10 cellar with its 2-3 league record. Nevertheless, the Bonnies are still in a solid position (see where ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has them listed in Bonus Nuggets below) to get to their first NCAA Tournament since 2012.

-- Mark Schmidt’s squad is 4-3 SU and 3-4 ATS on the road. The Bonnies are 2-1 both SU and ATS in three contests as road underdogs.

-- St. Bonaventure has lost three of its past four games both SU and ATS, including Saturday’s 87-73 loss at Rhode Island as a 7.5-point underdog. Jaylen Adams and Matt Mobley scored 19 points apiece, while Courtney Stockard finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists.

-- St. Bonaventure is No. 45 in the RPI, compiling a 2-2 record against the Top 50 and a 4-3 mark versus the Top 100. The Bonnies own wins at Buffalo (RPI #34) and at Syracuse, in addition to neutral-court scalps of Maryland and Vermont.

-- Although he missed six games in November when St. Bonaventure went 4-2 SU, Adams has been making up for it since then. He’s averaging 18.5 points, 5.1 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Adams is shooting at a 52.9 percent clip from 3-point land and has made 83.8 percent of his FTs. Mobley (17.1 PPG) paces his team in assists (2.8 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG), and he’s also pulling down 4.9 RPG. Stockard is averaging 11.3 points and 5.5 RPG, while LaDarien Griffin (9.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG) leads the Bonnies in FG percentage (47.7%) and blocks (1.3 BPG).

-- The ‘under’ is 10-5 overall for the Wildcats, 3-1 in their home outings. They’ve seen the ‘under’ cash in five straight regardless of the venue.

-- The ‘over’ has hit in five consecutive games for the Bonnies to improve to 8-6 overall. However, they’ve seen the ‘under’ go 4-3 in their road contests.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Creighton junior forward Martin Krampelj has been enjoying a breakout campaign, making his loss to a season-ending ACL tear even more painful for Doug McDermott’s team. Krampelj was averaging 11.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game before sustaining the injury in Wednesday’s 80-63 home win over Seton Hall.

-- Joe Lunardi’s latest edition of ‘Bracketology’ was released Thursday and had the ACC (9) and SEC (8) composing 17 teams out of the 68-school field. The ‘last four byes’ included Notre Dame, Alabama, Boise State and Syracuse, while the ‘last four in’ were UCLA, Maryland, Middle Tennessee and Providence. The ‘first four out’ included USC, Georgia, Baylor and Houston, while the ‘next four out’ had SMU, St. Bonaventure, Kansas St. and Virginia Tech.

-- Wisconsin is a 4.5-point home favorite vs. Illinois on Friday at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on FS1.

No. 9 Michigan State bounces back and routs Indiana 85-57

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Miles Bridges made a 3-pointer and bounced on his toes with joy, enjoying a game he and Michigan State desperately needed.

Bridges scored 22 points to help the ninth-ranked Spartans respond to adversity with an 85-57 win over Indiana on Friday night.

The Spartans (17-3, 5-2 Big Ten) had a confidence-boosting performance after going from a top-ranked team to a reeling one. They were slumping after a 16-point loss at Ohio State, an overtime win over Rutgers and an 82-72 setback to Michigan at home.

''I was just trying to prove that we weren't soft and that we can compete with any team,'' Bridges said. ''We were trying to prove a point.''

Michigan State took control with an 18-0 run midway through the first half, led by as much as 23 and was ahead 42-23 at halftime.

''We were aggressive and played our game,'' Bridges said. ''We had a great sense of urgency.''

Nick Ward had 18 points and 13 rebounds, Cassius Winston had 10 points, eight assists and only one turnover and Jaren Jackson had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks and for the Spartans.

The Hoosiers (11-8, 4-3) lost for the first time in four games, falling into a fourth-place tie with the Wolverines and Nebraska.

Indiana's Robert Johnson had 21 points and the rest of his teammates struggled offensively. Josh Newkirk scored 14, but missed 12 of 17 shots.

''If those two guys can continue to play well, I think we'll be OK,'' coach Archie Miller said.

The Hoosiers were held to 34 percent shooting.

''It wasn't a good offensive showing and they had a lot to do with it,'' Miller said.

FAMOUS FAN

Alex Rodriguez, who was in Detroit for the North American International Auto Show, attended the game. He wore an ''Izzone'' T-shirt while standing in the student section behind coach Tom Izzo, his staff and players.

''I've always been a big fan of Izzo,'' Rodriguez said.

Izzo became very fond of Rodriguez after hearing him talk to his team at its shootaround and in the locker room after the victory.

Rodriguez told the Spartans it bothers him that he ranks fifth on the all-time list with 2,287 career strikeouts.

''He talked about how many times he failed,'' Izzo recalled. ''What a great message for a team that came off a disappoint week of basketball.''

HE SAID IT

Izzo, like the school's board of trustees, is supporting university president Lou Ann Simon. Simon is facing growing calls to resign or to be fired by the board as part of the fallout from how the school handled allegations made against former employee Larry Nassar , who has pleaded guilty to multiple sexual assaults.

''There is no way I can waver in my support,'' Izzo said.

BIG PICTURE

Indiana: The Hoosiers have to hope Juwan Morgan's injury is not a long-term problem. He hurt his left ankle left in the first half, didn't return and left the locker room on crutches. One of the Big Ten's leaders in scoring, rebounding, steals and shooting was limited to two points on 1-of-5 shooting, three rebounds and one steal in 16 minutes.

''Even when Juwan was in there, we didn't have anything going,'' Miller said.

Miller said Morgan will be evaluated again when the team returned to Indiana.

Michigan State: The Spartans desperately needed to get their swagger back and they did, suddenly looking like the team that was ranked No. 1 two weeks ago.

No. 18 Kentucky needs to fix mistakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) John Calipari warned the growing pains would be ugly for his youngest Kentucky squad.

It's been an annual caution from the coach, but this time he may not have been exaggerating. Kentucky has two losses in its last three Southeastern road contests.

But all is not lost.

The No. 18 Wildcats (14-4, 4-2) return home to face first-place Florida (13-5, 5-1) Saturday night with a chance to erase a one-game deficit to the Gators. And after playing four of its first six SEC games on the road, Kentucky gets to close January with three of its next four at Rupp Arena.

The immediate goal is correcting mistakes in a loss to South Carolina, a setback that Calipari said revealed how green his freshman really are.

''My issue right now is we're playing a really good team and we needed some time to focus on them, but at this point we can't,'' Calipari said Friday. ''If we get this right and it's not good enough, then we move on to the next game.

''But if we get it right, then I'm going to feel good. If I don't get it right, it doesn't matter. At some point this has got to change and we've got to focus.''

Though Calipari is accustomed to annually guiding a new group of talented yet inexperienced teenagers through high expectations, this particular group is his youngest with no upperclassmen among his regulars. The communication and unselfish play he has stressed was absent as Kentucky blew a 14-point, second-half lead in Tuesday's 76-68 loss at South Carolina .

Already short handed with point guard Quade Green sidelined for a third straight game because of a back issue, the Wildcats had three players foul out in the contest. Kentucky was also outrebounded 40-35 and recorded a season-low seven assists - with none from Hamidou Diallo or fellow guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Calipari said the performance was the first time the Wildcats truly resembled freshmen but isn't using youth as an excuse. If anything, he's pushing players shake their youthful bad habits along with the memory of that defeat.

Calipari ''just wants us to play harder the whole 40 minutes,'' forward PJ Washington said. ''We've been scrimmaging a lot more to get us in game-like situations. ... You can never really try too hard. You just have to keep that mindset and just move on to the next opponent.''

One bright spot for Kentucky's rotation was the debut of 6-foot-9 forward Jarred Vanderbilt after being sidelined with a left foot injury. The freshman had six points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists in 14 minutes against the Gamecocks, an encouraging start that has allowed the Wildcats to scrimmage more with him.

''He plays with a lot of energy,'' freshman forward Nick Richards said of Vanderbilt. ''We see it in practice a lot. He plays hard every possession. That could be one thing that could help us.''

Green's availability meanwhile remains a game-time decision. If nothing else, Calipari would like him back to have another shooter, not to mention with someone who communicates with teammates. On the other hand, Green's absence has allowed Gilgeous-Alexander to play the point alongside Diallo.

But after fouls and shaky play forced Kentucky to use a number of combinations at South Carolina, the mission this weekend is ensuring whatever lineup is out there plays more consistently to slow down a Florida squad seeking its eighth win in nine games.

''It just comes with your mental'' approach, Washington said. ''You just gotta be prepared every day in and every day out and just fight on a consistent basis, just get shots up in the gym and just continue to focus on you and getting better.''
