  • Goodin leads No. 8 Xavier to 89-70 rout of Marquette
    January 24, 2018

CINCINNATI (AP) Point guard Quentin Goodin scored 13 of his team-high 15 points while No. 8 Xavier took control in the first half, and the Musketeers routed Marquette 89-70 on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten at home.

The Musketeers (19-3, 7-2 Big East) surged ahead by 26 and were never threatened as they beat the Golden Eagles for the second time this season. Xavier has won eight of the last 10 games between the schools.

Trevon Bluiett scored 13 and became the fifth Musketeers player with 2,000 career points.

Markus Howard had 33 for Marquette (13-7, 4-4), which entered second in the nation in 3-pointers. But the Golden Eagles went only 6 of 23 from outside the arc, matching their season low for 3s.

    No. 9 CINCINNATI 75, TEMPLE 42

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) - Gary Clark had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jarron Cumberland scored 11 of his 13 in the first half to help Cincinnati extend the nation's longest home winning streak with a victory over Temple.

Kyle Washington had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats (17-2, 7-0 American Athletic Conference), who won their 11th consecutive game and 37th straight at home while completing a regular-season sweep of the Owls.

Cincinnati is playing home games at BB&T Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University while its own building is renovated.

It was the worst loss of the season for Temple (10-10, 2-6), which shot a season-low 28.6 percent and committed 20 turnovers.

    No. 19 AUBURN 91, MISSOURI 73

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Jared Harper scored 21 points and Auburn beat Missouri.

Bryce Brown and Desean Murray each added 16 points as five Auburn players scored in double figures. Mustapha Heron had 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

After the teams went back and forth for the first 25 minutes, Auburn (18-2, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) used a 20-2 run to pull away. Kassius Robertson led Missouri (13-7, 3-4) with 21 points, and Jordan Barnett broke out of a scoring slump with 19.

Despite outrebounding Auburn 40-31, Missouri had nine shots blocked. Anfernee McLemore had six blocks for Auburn, adding to his conference-leading total.

    SOUTH CAROLINA 77, No. 20 FLORIDA 72

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Wesley Myers scored a season-high 22 points, Chris Silva added a double-double and South Carolina upset Florida.

Silva finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Gamecocks, who won the Elite Eight rematch from last year's NCAA Tournament.

South Carolina knocked off the Gators in that one thanks to 42 points in the paint. Coach Frank Martin's team won this one from the 3-point line.

The Gamecocks (13-7, 4-4 Southeastern Conference) hit 11 of 21 shots from beyond the arc, matching their most 3s all season. Myers was 5 of 7 from 3-point range, taking advantage of the league's worst team at defending the 3.

The Gators (14-6, 6-2) led by 11 in the first half and were up 48-39 early in the second. But they had no answer for Myers outside and Silva down low.

    No. 24 RHODE ISLAND 78, FORDHAM 58

NEW YORK (AP) - Andre Berry scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, Jared Terrell had 17 points and six assists, and Rhode Island cruised past Fordham at historic Rose Hill Gym.

Stan Robinson added 16 points, seven steals and six rebounds for the newly ranked Rams (16-3, 8-0 Atlantic 10), who moved into the AP Top 25 this week for the first time since November 2016. Rhode Island has won 11 straight games for the first time in 70 years.

Fordham (6-14, 1-7) was led by Will Tavares, who had 17 points and 13 assists.

      27— Nick Foles

      7— Mike McMahon, Kevin Kolb

      6— Jeff Garcia

      3— Vince Young

      2— AJ Feeley

      Quote of the Day

“It’s not about being drafted high. It’s being drafted high to the right team. If I’m a better fit somewhere else, that’s where I belong.”
Wyoming QB Josh Allen, a top NFL draft prospect

      Thursday’s quiz

What is the capital of Wyoming?

      Wednesday’s quiz

Since the last time they were in the Super Bowl, 11 QB’s have started a game for the Eagles?

      Tuesday’s quiz

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

      13) ESPN officially named Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez to join their Sunday Night Baseball crew; unusual that they went outside ESPN for their play-by-play guy, but they did. My initial reaction: think A-Rod will do a fine job. Vasgersian is very good, though Jon Sciambi is an ESPN guy who is just as good.

      12) Golden State has played 48 games this year; they’re 38-10. Kevin Durant sat eight of those games out with injuries; he’s been thrown out of four other games, most in the NBA.

So he was thrown out of 10% of his team’s games, finished only 75% of their games. $25 million doesn’t buy as much as it used to.

Just seems like there are an awful lot of unhappy people in the NBA, and yet everybody makes a boatload of money. Its not a good look for the league.

      11) Dick LeBeau has been in the NFL for 59 consecutive years, but now that Mike Vrabel is the new head coach in Tennessee, LeBeau is out of a job and he’s 80- kind of doubtful he’s going to get another job. End of an era, for sure.

Funny thing is, Titans hired Vrabel as their new head coach- he was Houston’s DC this past season and Tennessee had a better defense than Houston, but is LeBeau is the guy out of a job. Go figure.

      10) Last three years, the NFC champ was a team that was at .500 or under the year before.

      9) Think about how great a year Jacksonville Jaguars had; they were up 10 in 4th quarter in AFC title game— Jags were 22-74 the last six years before this one. Quite a leap they made.

      8) Disappointing that Lou Williams didn’t make the NBA All-Star Game; he deserves it.

      7) Irrelevant Stat of the Day: 12 of the last 13 Super Bowl winners wore white jerseys; Patriots chose to wear white next week- Brady is 3-0 in Super Bowls with white jerseys.

      6) Oklahoma’s Trae Young has an irrational fear of birds, otherwise known as Ornithophobia.

      5) With the Senior Bowl this week and NFL Network devoting most of the next three months to the 2018 NFL Draft, keep in mind that Antonio Brown was the 195th player taken in the 2010 Draft. Tom Brady was also a 6th round pick. Kurt Warner wasn’t drafted.

In other words, despite all the man-hours spent on this important part of the league, it is still an inexact science and it always will be, which is a big part of why it is so fascinating.

      4) Alabama’s football program made a $45.9M profit last year; I feel sorry for the poor bastard who replaces Nick Saban when he leaves Tuscaloosa.

      3) Villanova loses one of its starters, Phil Booth with a broken hand. Booth is shooting 43% on the arc this season. Wildcats’ bench is #289 in minutes played; this is a big blow.

      2) In the first minute the Super Bowl odds were up on the board, Golden Nugget took a $10K money line bet on the Eagles. Spread is 5 right now, though there are 4.5 and 5.5’s out there.

1— Richmond 77, Duquesne 73 OT— Third Dukes home game in a row that went to overtime.

              **Michigan at Purdue**

-- This is a rematch of Purdue’s 70-69 win at Michigan on Jan. 9. Isaac Haas buried a go-ahead free throw with four seconds remaining, but the Wolverines covered the spread as 1.5-point home underdogs. However, bets on Michigan to win outright (+115 at Sportsbook.ag) were unsuccessful, while those taking the Boilermakers on the money line (-125 at most Vegas shops) cashed a ticket. The 139 combined points ducked ‘under’ the 141.5-point total.

-- Purdue's Carsen Edwards scored 19 points and pulled down five rebounds in the win at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. Haas finished with 17 points, six boards and two blocked shots, while Dakota Mathias contributed 14 points, four assists and two steals. He buried four triples on seven attempts. In the losing effort, Zavier Simpson scored a team-best 15 points and had six rebounds and five assists compared to just one turnover.

-- Purdue owns the nation’s longest winning streak with 15 consecutive wins. Matt Painter’s team is 8-0 in Big Ten play and would probably be the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region if the season ended today.

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Purdue (19-2 straight up, 14-6 against the spread) listed as an 11.5-point favorite with a total of 137.

-- Purdue is undefeated in 12 home games with an 8-3 spread record. Painter’s bunch is 7-3 ATS in 10 games as a double-digit home favorite.

-- Purdue has covered the spread in three straight games and seven of its past nine, including Saturday’s 87-64 win at Iowa as an 11.5-point road ‘chalk.’ The 151 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 152.5-point total. The Boilermakers raced out to a commanding 51-20 lead at halftime and led by as many as 37 in the second half. Carsen Edwards dominated the Hawkeyes by producing 22 points, three rebounds, two steals and eight assists without a turnover. Vince Edwards added 19 points and two blocked shots. P.J. Thompson hit 4-of-6 attempts from 3-point range in a 14-point effort, while Dakota Mathias finished with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists compared to merely one turnover. Mathias also had two steals and drained 4-of-6 from downtown.

-- Carsen Edwards is averaging 17.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. The sophomore guard is making 48.5 percent of his shots from the field, 40.5 percent of his 3-balls and 80.0 percent of his free throws. Vince Edwards (14.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG) has nailed 46.2 percent of his launches from 3-point range and 83.8 percent of his FTs. Haas (13.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG) has 27 blocked shots, while Matt Haarms has a team-high 59 rejections.

-- Purdue is ranked 19th in the nation in points (84.8 PPG), 10th in field-goal percentage (50.3%) and second in 3-point accuracy (43.7%). The Boilermakers are ranked ninth in the country in scoring defense (62.2 PPG) and fourth in FG percentage defense (37.7%).

-- Purdue is 10th in the RPI Rankings and third in the latest Associated Press Top 25. The Boilermakers are 5-2 against the RPI Top 50 and 8-2 versus the Top 100. They have neutral-court wins over Butler and Arizona, in addition to road victories at Marquette, at Michigan, at Maryland and at Minnesota. Purdue’s best home wins are over Louisville and Nebraska.

-- Michigan (17-5 straight up, 12-8 against the spread) is 3-3 both SU and ATS in six road assignments. John Belein’s team beat Rutgers 62-47 Sunday to hook up its backers as a 12-point home favorite. Moritz Wagner scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for the winners, who bounced back from a 72-52 loss at Nebraska. Duncan Robinson added 12 points, five boards and four assists, while Simpson finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists with just one turnover.

-- Michigan is 25th in the AP poll and 38th in the RPI. Beilein’s team has a 2-3 record against the RPI Top 50 and a 5-5 mark versus the Top 100. The Wolverines have road wins at Texas and at Michigan St., while they’ve also produced home triumphs vs. Indiana, UCLA and Maryland.

-- Michigan has covered the spread in three straight games as an underdog with a pair of outright wins. For the season, it is 3-2 ATS as a ‘dog. This will be the richest spot as underdogs for the Wolverines this season, assuming the number remains in double digits. They won at Breslin Center in East Lansing as 9.5-point ‘dogs.

-- Charles Matthews paces Michigan with his 14.6 PPG average. The transfer from Kentucky who is out of St. Rita High School in Chicago is averaging 5.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. Wagner (14.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG) is making 54.4 percent of his FGA’s and 41.1 percent of his 3’s. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (10.5 PPG) has a stellar 70/13 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- Michigan is ranked 11th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 62.5 points per game.

-- The ‘under’ is 13-7 overall for Michigan, 3-3 in its road assignments. The ‘under’ has hit in three straight and four of the past five for the Wolverines.

-- The ‘under’ has cashed in six straight games for Purdue to improve to 11-9 overall and 7-4 in its home games.

              -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

              **Central Florida at Wichita State**

-- Wichita State is 5-2 in its first seven games as a member of the American Athletic Conference. Gregg Marshall’s club is in a second-place tie with Houston, as both teams are two games back of the league-leading Cincinnati Bearcats, who improved to 7-0 with last night’s dominant home win over Temple.

-- As of early this morning, most books had Wichita State (15-4 SU, 7-10 ATS) installed as a 13.5-point home favorite with a total of 130.

-- Marshall’s team has won eight of its 10 home games while compiling a 3-5 spread record. Wichita State took its home defeats vs. SMU last Wednesday (83-78) and vs. Oklahoma (91-83) on Dec. 16. The Shockers have been double-digit home ‘chalk’ six times, going 3-3 ATS.

-- Wichita State has dropped back-to-back games and can’t afford a loss tonight if it hopes to stay within striking distance of Mick Cronin’s UC team. After the home setback vs. SMU, the Shockers lost 73-59 Saturday at Houston as three-point road favorites. Shaquille Morris was the only Shocker in double figures with 12 points and seven rebounds.

-- Wichita State is ranked 17th in the AP poll and 27th in the RPI. Marshall’s team has home wins over Houston and South Dakota State and a neutral-court triumph over Marquette. The Shockers also have victories at Baylor, at Oklahoma State and at UConn. Their fourth loss came to Notre Dame by a 67-66 count in a neutral-site showdown back in November.

-- Marshall has one of the nation’s premier point guards in Landry Shamet, who is averaging team-highs in scoring (15.6 PPG), assists (5.2 APG), steals (0.7 SPG) and 3-point accuracy (50.0%). The junior was held to seven points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field at Houston. Shamet had the same number of assists (three) as turnovers (three) against the Cougars.

-- Central Florida (13-6 SU, 9-5 ATS) has won four of its six road games while going 3-2 ATS.

-- Johnny Dawkins’s squad lost 7’6” junior center Tacko Fall to a season-ending shoulder injury this past weekend. Fall was averaging 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game. Fall was making 76.7 percent of his FGAs, but he had a disastrous 5/42 assist-to-turnover ratio while hitting just 46.0 percent of his FTs.

-- Fall’s size in the lane has helped the Knights rank third in the nation in scoring defense (59.1 PPG) behind only Cincinnati and Virginia. They are ranked fifth in the country in FG percentage ‘D’ (37.5%).

-- UCF avoided a three-game losing streak by winning 71-69 Saturday in the I-4 rivalry. The Knights ventured West to Tampa and emerged victorious at USF, but the Bulls were the winners for our purposes as 9.5-point road favorites. B.J. Taylor scored 25 points and dished out five assists without a turnover for UCF. Chad Brown added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

-- This is UCF’s richest underdog situation of the season. The Knights have been double-digit ‘dogs twice, going 2-0 with one outright win at Alabama as 10-point puppies. They also covered as 11.5-point ‘dogs at SMU in a 56-51 loss.

-- UCF’s A.J. Davis (ankle) is ‘probable’ at Wichita State. Davis is averaging 10.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Chance McSpadden is ‘questionable’ with an ankle issue. McSpadden is averaging 5.8 points and 3.2 RPG.

-- The ‘under’ is 9-8 overall for the Shockers, but the ‘over’ is 6-2 in their home games.

-- The ‘under’ has been a relentless money maker in UCF games, going 12-2 overall and 4-1 in its road contests. When Saturday’s game at USF saw the 140 combined points soar ‘over’ the 119.5-point number, it was the first time the ‘over’ had hit in a UCF game since it beat Mercer 88-79 in the season opener on Nov. 10. (167 pts. went ‘over’ 134.5 pts.)

-- ESPN2 will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

              **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Wyoming handed Nevada its first loss in Mountain West Conference play with last night’s 104-103 double-overtime win as a three-point home underdog. Justin James dropped a game-high 33 points on the Wolf Pack and had 10 rebounds before fouling out in the first extra session. Hayden Dalton added 25 points, nine boards, four assists and two steals for the Cowboys, who play Saturday at San Jose State.

-- South Carolina went into Gainesville last night as a 10.5-point underdog and won a 77-72 decision to hook up its money-line supporters with a gorgeous +450 return (paid $450 on $100 wagers). Wesley Myers was the catalyst in the upset with 22 points, four assists and four steals. The grad transfer from Maine buried 5-of-7 launches from 3-point land. Chris Silva finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Jalen Hudson and Egor Koulechov scored 16 points apiece for the Gators, while Chris Chiozza had 10 points and eight assists compared to one turnover.

-- Auburn went on a 20-2 second-half run to put Missouri away in a 91-73 victory as a two-point road underdog. Five AU players were in double figures led by Jared Harper’s 21 points. Bryce Brown and Desean Murray scored 16 points apiece, and Mustapha Heron finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kassius Robertson had a team-best 21 points for Missouri.
              >
-- Kentucky is unranked in the AP Top 25 this week for the first time since 2014. I won’t be surprised if the ‘Cats are underdogs of 7-8 points at West Virginia in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday. I’ll be on WVU if the Mountaineers are favored by five or fewer.

-- It’s a shame Auburn isn’t in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Instead, Bruce Pearl’s club will host LSU on Saturday.

-- Steve Alford was on the receiving end of great news earlier this week when five-star center Moses Brown committed to UCLA over Maryland and FSU. The 7-foot-1 product of Archbishop Molloy High School in New York, the same program that produced Georgia Tech legendary point guard Kenny Anderson, is ranked the 18th-best prospect in the 2018 class in the ESPN 100 rankings. Alford now has three ESPN 100 commits for his 2018 class.

-- Ranking the Big 12/SEC Challenge games:

1 - Kentucky at West Virginia
              2 - Oklahoma at Alabama
              3 - Texas A&M at Kansas
4 - Texas Tech at South Carolina
              5 - Baylor at Florida
6 - Oklahoma St. at Arkansas
7 - Georgia at Kansas State
8 - Tennessee at Iowa State
9 - Ole Miss at Texas
              10 - TCU at Vanderbilt

-- Pay close attention to Alabama’s chemistry in its monster home game vs. Oklahoma. The Crimson Tide won the two games Collin Sexton missed with an abdominal injury. The team’s leading scorer returned in Wednesday’s loss at Ole Miss. Sexton, the likely one-and-done guard who some feel could be a lottery pick, went 2-of-13 from the field in 20 minutes of playing time off the bench in Oxford.

              • No. 3 Purdue beats No. 25 Michigan for 16th straight win
                January 25, 2018

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Vincent Edwards scored 30 points, Isaac Haas added 24 and No. 3 Purdue matched a school record with its 16 straight victory, using a late charge to finally get past No. 25 Michigan 92-88 on Thursday night.

The Boilermakers (20-2, 9-0 Big Ten) have won 20 consecutive games at Mackey Arena and are off to their best start in conference play since the NCAA Tournament began. It's the fourth time Purdue has won 16 in a row, most recently 30 years ago.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman had career-high 26 points and Zavier Simpson added 16 for Michigan (17-6, 6-4). The Wolverines were swept by Purdue in the regular season for the first time since 2007-08.

                No. 11 ARIZONA 80, COLORADO 71

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Allonzo Trier scored 23 points, Deandre Ayton added 20 and Arizona avenged its lone loss of the Pac-12 season.

The 7-foot-1 Ayton, expected to be at or near the top of the NBA draft this year, was 12 of 12 at the foul line as the Buffaloes tried to get physical with the big rookie, without much success.

Dusan Ristic added 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Wildcats (17-4, 7-1 Pac-12). George King scored 22 points for Colorado (12-9, 4-5).

PENN STATE 82, No. 13 OHIO STATE 79

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Tony Carr hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Penn State an upset victory over Ohio State, handing the Buckeyes their first Big Ten loss.

Carr had 28 points and was 4 for 5 from 3-point range for the Nittany Lions (14-8, 4-5 Big Ten). They were 11 for 14 from beyond the arc in beating a Top 25 team for the first time this season.

Keita Bates-Diop led Ohio State (18-5, 9-1) with 25 points. He had three 3-pointers in the last 2:07, tying it with the last with 5 seconds left.

No. 17 WICHITA STATE 81, CENTRAL FLORIDA 62

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Shaquille Morris scored 19 points to lead Wichita State.

Morris, demoted from his starting spot, was 8 of 10 from the floor in 21 minutes. Darral Willis had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Shockers (16-4, 6-2 American Athletic Conference).

Dayon Griffin scored 15 points for Central Florida (13-7, 4-4).

UTAH 80, No. 21 ARIZONA STATE 77, OT

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Sedrick Barefield scored 17 points and hit the tying 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left in regulation, helping Utah knock off Arizona State in overtime.

Utah (13-7, 5-4 Pac-12) led 79-77 late in overtime and had a chance to stretch it, but David Collette missed two free throws with 20.9 seconds left.

Arizona State (15-5, 3-5) missed two shots on the next possession and Barefield hit 1 of 2 free throws. The Sun Devils' final shot, a running 3-pointer by Tra Holder at the buzzer, was nowhere close.

Holder led Arizona State with 23 points.

                • Wisconsin at Michigan State
                  January 25, 2018

As we’ve noted in this space on several occasions, Wisconsin’s chances of continuing its string of annual NCAA Tournament appearances that spans two decades have been in danger for 5-6 weeks. Now as the calendar has hit late January, we can expand that premise to this: UW will not hear its name called on Selection Sunday for the first time since 1998 unless it wins the Big Ten Tournament.

We saw Wisconsin in its richest spot as an underdog this century in a 78-50 loss at Purdue as a 14.5-point ‘dog two Tuesdays ago. On Friday night at Breslin Center in East Lansing, the Badgers are even bigger underdogs at Michigan State.

As of Thursday night, most betting shops had Tom Izzo’s team installed as a 16-point home ‘chalk’ with a total of 134.5.

Michigan State (18-3 straight up, 13-8 against the spread) owns an 8-3 spread record in 11 games as a double-digit home favorite. The Spartans are 12-1 SU and 9-4 ATS at home this year.

After a three-game slump saw MSU go 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS with a pair of losses by double-digit margins, in addition to an overtime escape vs. Rutgers as a 22-point home favorite, it has responded with a pair of strong performances. Izzo’s squad hosted an Indiana team last Friday that came to Breslin having won five of its last six games, only to be delivered woodshed treatment in an 85-57 loss. The Spartans easily hooked up their betting supporters as 14.5-point home ‘chalk.’

Miles Bridges was the catalyst with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point land. Bridges, the sophomore forward who bypassed the NBA Draft for another year at MSU, had a pair of blocked shots as well. Nick Ward added 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Michigan State followed up the win over IU with an 87-74 victory Monday at Illinois as a 12-point road favorite. The Spartans led by 17 with 3:10 remaining, but Illinois went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to eight by the 1:00 mark. In the final minute, Jaren Jackson Jr. (6-6 FTs) and Bridges (4-4) combined to make 10 straight free throws.

But this was a fortunate cover for Michigan State backers. Illinois narrowed the deficit to 83-74 on Mark Smith’s layup with 18 seconds left. At this point, many teams would quit fouling. The Illini didn’t, though. With 17 seconds remaining, Bridges hit a pair at the charity stripe to build the lead back up to 11. When Illinois missed at the other end, Trent Frazier opted (to the chagrin of many gamblers) to foul Jackson with nine ticks left. He made both to put Sparty ahead by 13 and ahead of the number by one. Therefore, the ATS decision came down to a Kipper Nichols 3-pointer with four seconds remaining. It missed and MSU backers rejoiced.

MSU is ranked sixth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and No. 26 in the RPI Rankings. The Spartans are 1-3 versus the RPI Top 50 and 5-3 against the Top 100. They have neutral-court wins over North Carolina and UConn, in addition to home wins over Notre Dame, Nebraska and Maryland.

Bridges is averaging 17.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Ward (14.1 PPG, 7.5 RPG) is making 70.3 percent of his field-goal attempts. Joshua Langford (13.0 PPG) is draining 45.6 percent of his 3-pointers, while Cassius Winston (12.2 PPG, 7.0 APG) has a 146/57 assist-to-turnover ratio and has knocked down 52.9 percent of his treys. Jackson (11.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG) paces the Spartans in steals (0.8 SPG) and blocks (3.3 BPG).

Wisconsin (10-11 SU, 7-12 ATS) has limped to a 1-6 SU record and a 1-5-1 ATS mark in seven road assignments. Greg Gard’s club returned only one starter from last year’s senior-laded team that advanced to the East Region semifinal before losing to Florida at the buzzer in overtime.

Junior power forward Ethan Happ was the lone returning starter. He paces UW in scoring (16.9 PPG), assists (3.8 APG), rebounding (8.5 RPG) and FG percentage (56.4%).

Kobe King, a true freshman guard who was Wisconsin’s Mr. Basketball last year, was expected to play a major role, but his season ended due to a knee injury after only 10 games. D’Mitrik Trice, a sophomore guard, hasn’t played since Dec. 6 due to a foot injury, but he’s nearly ready to return and is listed as ‘questionable’ at MSU. Trice was averaging 9.4 points, 2.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds in UW’s first 10 games.

Wisconsin is No. 137 in the RPI with a 1-6 record against the Top 50 and a 1-9 mark versus the Top 100. Even the one win over No. 47 Western Kentucky was an 81-80 triumph in which the Badgers were the benefactors of two extremely controversial calls in the final minute.

The ‘under’ was on a 4-0-1 run for UW until the 152 combined points sailed ‘over’ the 141.5-point tally in Tuesday’s loss at Iowa. The Badgers have watched the ‘under’ go 10-8-2 overall, 5-1-1 in their road outings.

The ‘over’ is 12-8 overall for the Spartans, 9-3 in their home games. They’ve seen the ‘over’ go 8-3 in their past 11 outings.

Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

                  **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- The ‘under’ has cashed in six straight games and eight of the last nine for Harvard. The Crimson, which is 5-1-1 ATS in its past seven lined contests, is at Yale on Friday night. As of early Thursday night, the Bulldogs were listed as 1.5-point home favorites with a total of 134. Yale has failed to cover the spread in five consecutive games and is 2-8 ATS for the season.

-- According to a report from Land of 10, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery isn’t in any danger of being fired following this nightmare of an eighth season at Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who are 11-11 overall and 2-7 in a down year for the Big Ten, apparently received a raise and an extension on Nov. 29. In this new deal, his buyout – should he be fired after this season -- escalated from $4.6 million to $10.2 million. Also, his buyout would be $9 million if Iowa wanted to oust him after the 2018-19 campaign.

-- Texas Tech’s Chris Beard will be coaching in pain Saturday at South Carolina. Beard tore his ACL during a team practice last week.

-- Wofford will host East Tennessee State on Saturday in an outstanding mid-major matchup. The Terriers, who are 15-5 SU, won 79-75 at North Carolina on Dec. 20. They have one of the nation’s most underrated players in junior guard Fletcher Magee, who dropped 27 points on the Tar Heels. Magee is tied for the nation’s lead in FT percentage (96.7%), hitting 59-of-61 attempts from the stripe. **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                    13) Miami Marlins had the best outfield in baseball last year; now they’re all gone. Christian Yelich got dealt to Milwaukee Thursday, for OF Lewis Brinson and three minor leaguers.

Marlins might as well fire all their ushers; ain’t going to be lot of fans in their home ballpark this year. Looking forward to seeing what the Marlins’ over/under win total will be.

                    12) Vince McMahon is bringing the XFL back in January 2020; eight teams, 10-game schedule. Sounds like it is going to be more mainstream this time around, unlike 2001, when there were lot of gimmicks involved.

There are rumors on the Interweb that McMahon is using this as a way to tell NFL owners he wouldn’t mind buying the Carolina Panthers when Jerry Richardson sells them.

Some college basketball thoughts from the past few nights:
                    11) Penn State 82, Ohio State 79— Tony Carr scored 28 points, nailed a 40-footer at the buzzer to hand the Buckeyes their first conference loss. Penn State is much-improved.

                    10) Wyoming 104, Nevada 103, 2OT— Great game late Wednesday night; high altitude got the Nevada kids in the overtimes- they don’t have a lot of depth because they have several transfers sitting out for next season. First conference loss for the Wolf Pack.

                    9) Oklahoma 85, Kansas 80— Lon Kruger made sure the shots were more spread around for this game; Trey Young only took nine shots, had nine assists, playing the whole 40:00.

                    8) Fresno State 69, UNLV 63— Very bad beat if you took the Rebels, +4.5; they fouled a Fresno player with 0:03.5 left, down 2- the kid made both foul shots. UNLV then threw a pass to mid-court, but the passer stepped over the line before he threw the pass, Fresno got the ball under the hoop and UNLV fouled again, wound up losing by six.

                    7) South Carolina 77, Florida 72— When an SEC team beats Kentucky, there is a hangover; Gators actually had a revenge motive over South Carolina here after losing to Gamecocks in Elite 8 last year, but they lost to Carolina at home.

                    6) Miami 78, Louisville 75 OT— Two really good teams here; Louisville is little underrated because Pitino is gone, but they’ve still got really good players.

                    5) USC 69, Stanford 64— Trojans avenged their loss in Palo Alto when Stanford nailed a shot from half-court at the buzzer. Cardinal started season 6-8, but they’re healthier now and aren’t an easy out in the Pac-12.

                    4) Loyola, Chi 80, Drake 57— Ramblers take over first place in the Missouri Valley.

                    3) Richmond 77, Duquesne 73 OT— Spiders won their last four games after starting season 3-13.

                    2) Santa Barbara 70, Cal State-Fullerton 65— Titans lost by 18 in the Thunderdome eight nights ago, but jumped out to a 14-point lead in this game before the Gauchos stormed back late and swept the season series. Max Heidegger scored 28 for UCSB— he was 12-12 on foul line.

                    1) Bad Beat of the Night— Towson State (-7) 96, William & Mary 82 OT— Tribe led by 10 at the half, by 6 with 3:39 left, but got outscored 17-3 in overtime- they were 16-37 on arc but they did not cover. Tigers shot 64.6% inside the arc- they’re 15-7 now.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                              13) First time the Eagles played in the Super Bowl, 36 years ago, the tickets cost $40. Now you can add a couple zeroes to the end of that.

                              12) Lot of big-time money-line bets on the Eagles this week; as of 4pm Friday. CG Technology said it had a 7-figure liability on the Eagles’ money line. Interesting.

Just can’t envision someone taking $700,000 and betting on New England to lose SU, but that is what makes gambling so fascinating— you and I look at the same things in different ways.

                              11) NCAA is investigating UConn’s basketball program, so speculation can begin on who will take Kevin Ollie’s job. Huskies are struggling badly, so Ollie will get told to take a hike pretty soon, if there is anything at all to the NCAA’s probe.

If he was winning, they’d take a deep breath and stay the course.

There is no real logical successor at UConn; Steve Pikiell? Jim Calhoun worked wonders in the Nutmeg State— it wasn’t a very good job before he took it.

                              10) College football coaches are nomads: Dan Enos was the offensive coordinator at Arkansas the last three years, but the Razorbacks changed coaches, so Enos signed on with Michigan Jan 8th, but this week, Enos quit and will now be the quarterbacks’ coach at Alabama.

Seeing how Alabama’s football program turned a $45M profit LY, they can pay their coaches really, really well and with a freshman and sophomore QB battling for playing time next fall, Nick Saban needs a QB coach who can develop at least one of them— chances are one will also transfer, eventually.

                              9) When Dick Vermeil took the Eagles’ head coaching job in 1976, he took a family vote on whether to move from UCLA to the Eagles— he was the only person to vote yes. That must have been a fun first couple of years, when the kids were cold as hell in winter and the team sucked.

Everything turned out well; the Eagles wound up in the Super Bowl, then coach Vermeil retired and went into TV work— he stayed in TV for 14 years before coaching the Rams, by which time his kids were all grown up.

                              8) TNT announcers were killing the Washington Wizards during their first half of their game in Oklahoma City Thursday night; phrases like “Going through the motions” and “Maybe they should have another team meeting” were heard more than once. All this and the Wizards are tied for 5th seed in the East.

All this drama surrounding NBA teams lately, and most of it involving good teams; what the hell must the bad teams be like? They must really hate playing with each other.

                              7) Billy Donovan has gone from being one of the best college basketball coaches in the country to coaching the Oklahoma City Thunder, one of the NBA’s better teams. I’d love to know if he enjoys it, or if he would ever go back to coaching in college? I’m just curious, thats all.

                              6) If someone doesn’t name a racehorse “Secret Society” this summer, I’m going to be very disappointed. Catchy name.

                              5) Stormy Daniels will be on the Jimmy Kimmel Show Tuesday night, after the State of the Union address. Asking for a friend: when was the last time a porn star/escort was a guest on a network TV talk show? Again, I’m just curious.

                              4) Former NFL QB Tarvaris Jackson signed up to be a graduate assistant football coach at Alabama State— he hopes to coach in the NFL someday. He played 10 years in the NFL.

                              3) The Earth doesn’t take 24 hours to rotate the sun; it takes 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4 seconds.

                              2) Pelicans beat Houston last night, but DeMarcus Cousins limped off with an achilles injury late in the game and it didn’t look good. New Orleans has been on a roll lately, was moving up the ladder in the Western Conference, but if this is a serious injury, then sayonara to that.

                              1) Miami Marlins’ GM Michael Hill is going to try to run seven marathons on seven continents in seven days starting next week, which takes him off the grid. No wonder the Marlins always suck; when baseball isn’t your GM’s priority just before spring training starts, what do you expect?

But hey, the guy went to Harvard, so who cares if he is running a marathon in Antartica when someone wants to call about a potential trade for JT Realmuto?
