Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

    13) Michigan 69, Loyola 57— Ramblers were up 7 at the half; other than Wagner, Wolverines were 4-23 in first half, but Michigan scored 47 points in 2nd half, after only 22 in first, and they move on to the national championship game Monday night.

Loyola shot 39.8% on the arc for the season; they were 1-10 in this game.

    12) Villanova 95, Kansas 79— With 6:52 left in first half, Villanova led by 14 and already had seven guys who made at least one 3-pointer- this game was 22-4 at one point, and was reminiscent of Villanova’s dismantling of Oklahoma in the national semis two years ago.

    11) I’ve thought a lot about this, asked lot of people about it and still cannot find a decent reason to bat the pitcher 8th. Mets/Phillies are doing it this year with new managers.

Tony LaRussa used to do it, Joe Maddon has done it, which gives the idea credibility, but they did not do it in playoff games, which makes me a skeptic.

    10) Scheduling quirk: AL West Houston Astros/Texas Rangers do not play this season after July 29th. All 19 of their meetings are before then.

    9) Asdrubel Cabrera is the first ballplayer in 103 years to bat cleanup on Opening Day, then bat leadoff in the second game of the season.

Only one instance Interweb folks could find where a guy batted leadoff on Opening Day, then batted cleanup in the second game of the year— Hall of Famer Tim Raines, in 1989.

    8) Obscure Stat of the Day: White Sox pitcher James Shields is the first pitcher since 1908 to allow four 1st-inning runs on Opening Day, but then go on to win that game.

    7) Baltimore Orioles won in walk-off fashion in their last three Opening Day games.

    6) Sporting News basketball writer Mike DeCourcy is from Pittsburgh; when Jeff Capel got the Pitt Panthers coaching job earlier this week, DeCourcy wrote an article about the Pitt job, and wrote about how Pittsburgh “….isn’t a basketball town.” Uh oh.

Why would you want to coach in the ACC at a school that isn’t in “a basketball town”?

    5) Gonzaga will stay in the WCC next season, instead of bolting to the Mountain West.

    4) A guy at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas risked $130,000 on Michigan to win SU; he got $50,000 for his trouble; after the Wolverines won, he quickly put the $50,000 on Kansas, +5.

    3) Seems like the Arizona Diamondbacks wear a different uniform every night; I’m thinking it has to be at least a little distracting, especially early in the season.

    2) Phillies’ rookie manager Gabe Kapler took his starting pitcher out in the 4th inning last nite in Atlanta, but there didn’t seem to be anyone warming up when he did it. The reliever took a long time to get to the mound and Braves manager Snitker got tossed when he objected to the pitcher being allowed his eight warmup tosses even after taking forever to get on the field.

    1) Xavier Silas got signed by the Celtics this week; its been six years, over 2,100 days since he last played in the NBA. I remember seeing him play in an AAU tournament in Orlando when he was in high school— his dad James Silas was a terrific player in the ABA.

Imagine how great it must be to wait over six years and finally get that call again to play in the NBA? There had to be times he thought it would never happen, but it did.

    • Sunday's Tip Sheet
      March 31, 2018

Game of the Night: Jazz at Timberwolves – 7:05 PM EST

The Northwest division has been the best division from top to bottom in the NBA this season. It’s highly unlikely that all five teams will reach the playoffs, but four squads have a great opportunity to make the postseason. Portland owns a 3 ½-game edge atop the division entering Sunday’s action, but Minnesota, Oklahoma City, and Utah are separated by a half-game for second place.

The Wolves (44-33 SU, 33-41-3 ATS) are seeking their first three-game winning streak since mid-January as Minnesota is fresh off victories over Atlanta and Dallas. Minnesota has struggled to cover numbers recently by posting a 1-6-1 ATS record in the last eight games, including a non-cover in Friday’s 93-92 triumph at Dallas as six-point favorites. To make matters worse, four of the Wolves’ last five opponents aren’t even in playoff contention.

The Jazz (43-33 SU, 39-37 ATS) rebounded from a buzzer-beating loss to the Celtics by holding off the Grizzlies, 107-97 on Friday. Utah shot 54% from the floor, but failed to cash as 14 ½-point favorites to drop to 1-6 ATS the last seven contests. Hitting the road isn’t the worst thing for Quin Snyder’s team, who owns a 13-1 SU and 10-4 ATS record in the past 14 games away from Salt Lake City.

Minnesota captured the first two matchups of the season, but Utah rebounded with a home victory in early March. The Jazz took care of the Wolves, 116-108 as seven-point favorites, while three players were ejected. Minnesota guard Jeff Teague was thrown out for hip-checking Utah’s Ricky Rubio, while Karl-Anthony Towns received a pair of technical fouls in the first half.

      Wrong Direction

Playoff teams should be playing their best basketball heading into April. That’s not the case for the Pelicans and Thunder, as both squads have dropped three consecutive games. Oklahoma City (44-33 SU, 31-45-1 ATS) looks to stay out of the dreaded 7th or 8th playoff position in the West, which would mean an opening round matchup with Houston or Golden State.

The Thunder have been squeezed in all three games of their current skid by losing each time by four points or less. The latest setback came in Friday’s overtime defeat to Denver, 126-125 as four-point favorites. OKC erased a 13-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, as Russell Westbrook led the Thunder with 33 points and 13 assists. However, the Thunder couldn’t hold a six-point advantage with less than 2:30 left to fall to 0-4-1 ATS the last five games.

The Pelicans (43-33 SU, 40-35-1 ATS) squandered a 10-point halftime edge in Friday’s 107-102 loss at Cleveland. New Orleans has failed to step up during this brutal stretch which has seen it lose to the Rockets, Blazers, and Cavaliers following a four-game winning streak. The Pelicans posted 45 second half points on Friday, while Anthony Davis was limited to 16 points on 6-of-19 shooting and finishing with a plus-minus of -20.

Oklahoma City swept the four-game series from New Orleans last season, but the Pelicans have taken the first two matchups this season. In their last meeting on February 2 in OKC, New Orleans rallied from an early double-digit deficit to pick up a 114-100 victory as 6 ½-point underdogs, led by Davis’ 43 points.

      End of the Road

The Bucks (41-35 SU, 31-40-5 ATS) are on the cusp of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference as they wrap up their four-game road swing. Following a loss to the Clippers to start the trip, Milwaukee picked up back-to-back wins over the Warriors and Lakers. In Friday’s victory at Staples Center, the Bucks blew a 14-point halftime lead, but staved off the Lakers in overtime, 124-122 to pull off the season sweep. Eric Bledsoe stepped up for Milwaukee by scoring 39 points, while Giannis Antetokounmpo posted a double-double with 27 points and 16 rebounds.

Milwaukee travels to Denver to face a Nuggets’ (41-35 SU, 35-38-3 ATS) squad that sits two games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with six games remaining. The Nuggets picked up a huge victory by edging the Thunder on Friday in overtime to close out their seven-game road swing. Denver looks to improve on a 27-10 record at Pepsi Center as four of its final six contests come at home.

The last time these teams met up prior to the All-Star break in Milwaukee, the Nuggets shot lights out in a 134-123 triumph as 2 ½-point underdogs. Denver knocked down 24 three-pointers on 40 attempts, while all five Nuggets’ starters hit at least three treys. Center Nikola Jokic put together a triple-double with 30 points, 15 rebounds, and 17 assists, as Denver tries to pick up its 10th home win over Milwaukee in the last 11 tries.

      Avoid the Letdown

As the calendar turns to April, the Cavaliers (46-30 SU, 28-47-1 ATS) still haven’t clinched the Central division title. In fact, Cleveland could finish anywhere from the third to fifth seed in the Eastern Conference depending on how the next two weeks goes. The next three games for the Cavaliers following Sunday come against the Raptors, Wizards, and 76ers, all teams in the top six of the East.

LeBron James and the Cavs have won seven of their past eight games, including Friday’s comeback victory over the Pelicans. The potential letdown could come against the Mavericks (23-53 SU, 39-36-1 ATS), who have dropped seven of their previous eight contests and have won a total of nine road games this season. Dallas has covered in its last two tries as a double-digit away underdog, while Cleveland has put together an ugly 1-13 ATS mark this season when laying at least 10 points.

                • Aldridge, Gay help Spurs hold down Rockets 100-83
                  April 1, 2018

SAN ANTONIO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge had 23 points and 14 rebounds and Rudy Gay added 21 points as the San Antonio Spurs held Houston to its lowest-scoring game of the season, beating the Rockets 100-83 on Sunday.

The Spurs remained fourth in the Western Conference after preventing a season sweep by the Rockets. Houston owns the NBA's best record.

San Antonio outscored Houston 19-8 to open the fourth quarter in taking a 94-74 lead with 5 minutes remaining. Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni opted to take his starters out two minutes later.

The Rockets were without injured Chris Paul and the Spurs were without Kawhi Leonard, who has played in only nine games this season.

James Harden scored 25 points for Houston on 8-of-19 shooting. He also had eight assists, but battled foul trouble before exiting with five fouls. Eric Gordon added 18 points for the Rockets.

                  CAVALIERS 98, MAVERICKS 87

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James struggled before extending his record double-digit scoring streak to 868 games and Cleveland had a rough time with Dallas before putting away the lottery-bound Mavericks.

James, who broke Michael Jordan's NBA mark for consecutive games with at least 10 points on Friday night, didn't reach 10 until 7:59 remained. He finished just 5 of 21 from the field but made a pair of 3-pointers as the Cavs finally pulled away with a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter.

James had 16 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, his 17th triple-double this season and No. 72 of his career.

Harrison Barnes scored 30 points to lead Dallas, which has dropped eight of nine.

                  TRAIL BLAZERS 113, GRIZZLIES 98

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard had 27 points and nine assists, and Portland held off a late run by Memphis.

The Trail Blazers clinched their fifth straight playoff spot earlier in the evening when Utah won at Minnesota.

CJ McCollum added 20 points and another nine assists for Portland, which is still holding on to third place in the Western Conference with five games remaining. The Blazers have won four of their last five.

Rookie Dillon Brooks had 28 points for Memphis, which sits second-to-last in the West.

                  WARRIORS 117, SUNS 107

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Durant had 29 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and Golden State overcame a sloppy start to hand Phoenix its franchise-record 15th consecutive loss.

Draymond Green added 13 points and 12 assists, Klay Thompson scored 23 points and Quinn Cook had 19 points for Golden State. The Warriors have won two straight since dropping four of five.

Golden State's victory was the 263rd under coach Steve Kerr, tying him for third-most in franchise history. Al Attles (557) and Don Nelson (422) hold the top two spots.

Hours before the game, the Warriors received encouraging word on injured guard Pat McCaw, who was released from a Sacramento hospital with a bruised lumbar spine following a terrifying fall during Saturday's game against the Kings.

                  THUNDER 109, PELICANS 104

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Russell Westbrook had a triple-double to lead Oklahoma City.

Westbrook finished with 26 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists. Paul George scored Oklahoma City's first 11 points in the second quarter and finished with 27. Carmelo Anthony added 16 and Steven Adams had 14.

The Pelicans got within 104-99 with 1:57 left, but Westbrook scored on a layup, and after a basket by Anthony Davis, George made a 3-pointer.

Davis led the Pelicans with 25 points and 11 rebounds, Ian Clark scored 16 points and E'Twaun Moore had 15.

                  76ERS 119, HORNETS 102

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Ben Simmons had 20 points and 15 assists as Philadelphia kept up its passing prowess to beat Charlotte.

The Sixers set a team record with its ninth straight game of 30 or more assists - they had 36 on their 48 baskets.

Former Hornet Marco Belinelli scored 22 points off the bench and J.J. Redick had 20. Robert Covington added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Charlotte was led by Malik Monk and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with 16 points apiece. Willy Hernangomez added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

                  PISTONS 108, NETS 96

NEW YORK (AP) - Reggie Jackson scored 29 points, Stanley Johnson had 17 and Detroit preserved its slim playoff hopes with a victory over Brooklyn.

Detroit, playing its third straight game without injured All-Star forward Blake Griffin, avoided elimination from postseason contention for at least one game. Griffin, acquired Jan. 30 from the Los Angeles Clippers, suffered a bone bruise in his right ankle during last Monday's win over the Lakers.

Ish Smith had 17 points and Andre Drummond added 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who have now won five straight for the third time this season.

The Pistons are four games behind Miami - which holds the eighth and last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference - with five games remaining for each team.

                  PACERS 111, CLIPPERS 104

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Victor Oladipo scored 30 points, Myles Turner added 24 and Indiana rallied for its fifth straight victory.

Oladipo shot 11 of 17 from the field and had 12 assists for the playoff-bound Pacers, who have won four in a row over the Clippers.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the fourth quarter, when the Pacers scored on nearly every possession over the last five minutes. They've won 12 of their last 16.

Tobias Harris led the Clippers with 21 points. Lou Williams added 20 and Montrezl Harrell had 19 off the bench. Austin Rivers scored 18 and DeAndre Jordan grabbed 12 rebounds.

                  NUGGETS 128, BUCKS 125, OT

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 35 points and 13 rebounds, Jamal Murray scored 18 of his 27 points after the third quarter and Denver rallied from eight down in the final minute of regulation to win in overtime.

Paul Millsap had 26 points and 13 rebounds for Denver, which took over in the extra period to strengthen its playoff chances.

The Nuggets (42-35) moved within a game of eighth-place New Orleans, which lost its fourth straight Sunday, and 1 1/2 games of Minnesota, which also lost.

Jabari Parker scored a season-high 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Eric Bledsoe had 31 points for Milwaukee (41-36). The Bucks' magic number for clinching a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference remains at two.

                  JAZZ 121, TIMBERWOLVES 97

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ricky Rubio scored 23 points, including a season-high 5-for-6 shooting on 3-pointers, and Donovan Mitchell added 21 points for Utah.

Dante Exum had 14 points and Jonas Jerebko scored 13 points to help Utah climb a half-game ahead of Minnesota for sixth in the Western Conference. The loss kept the Timberwolves one game ahead of New Orleans, which lost at home to Oklahoma City.

The Jazz shot a season-high 60.5 percent from the field and got 50 points from their reserves to split the season series with the Wolves by winning the last two games. Utah has won 25 of its past 30 games.

Andrew Wiggins scored 23 points for Minnesota, which had won two straight but fell to 19-5 at home against Western Conference opponents this season. Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points.

                  BULLS 113, WIZARDS 94

CHICAGO (AP) - Rookie Lauri Markkanen scored 23 points and connected on 5 of 8 3-pointers to lead Chicago.

Bobby Portis had 18 points and hit 4 of 5 from long range, and Sean Kilpatrick added 14 points. Chicago shot 52.4 percent overall from the floor and was 18 for 34 on 3s - matching its season high - as Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg missed the game with an upper-respiratory infection.

Hoiberg returned home before tipoff, leaving associate head coach Jim Boylen to direct Chicago to its second straight win following a seven-game skid.

Otto Porter Jr. led the Wizards with 17 points as five-time All-Star John Wall rested. Bradley Beal scored 15 points and reserve Mike Scott added 14.

                  KINGS 84, LAKERS 83

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 19 points to help Sacramento snap a four-game losing streak.

Bodgan Bodganovic had 15 points, while Willie Cauley-Stein added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Kings, who were on the second night of a back-to-back. They lost to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday.

Julius Randle scored 19 points, while Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 16 for Los Angeles, which has lost seven of nine.

                  HAWKS 94, MAGIC 88

ATLANTA (AP) - Tyler Dorsey scored 19 points, including back-to-back baskets after Orlando trimmed Atlanta's lead to five points late in a matchup of the Eastern Conference's worst records.

Dewayne Dedmon had 17 points and 10 rebounds and rookie John Collins added another double-double for Atlanta with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Hawks snapped a five-game losing streak.

D.J. Augustin led Orlando with 20 points, and rookie Jonathan Isaac had a career-high 15.

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a quiet Easter Sunday

                    13) Toronto 7, New York 4— My biggest problem with the analytics movement is that is goes out of its way to diminish the manager’s role in how a team is run. Can’t do it.

In this game, New York led 4-3 in bottom of 8th; Toronto had men on 2nd/3rd with two out and Josh Donaldson (3-8 with 2 HR’s off Robertson) up. Justin Smoak (0-5 vs Robertson) was on deck; he had homered in his previous AB. What do you do?

Aaron Boone decides to walk Donaldson intentionally. Smoak hits a grand slam. Welcome to the big leagues, Aaron Boone. Being a TV announcer is a lot easier.

                    12) There are two basketball Hall of Fames; the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, in Kansas City.

There is at least one glaring omission from the College Hall of Fame: Jerry Tarkanian.

Tarkanian went 706-198 in his coaching career, won the 1990 national title at UNLV, made two other Final Fours. For him not be in the Hall of Fame (he is in the Naismith HOF) makes the College HOF look stupid.

                    11) Some people will cite Tark’s battles with the NCAA as a reason to keep him out, to which I say this: Eddie Sutton, who was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 2011.

From Sutton’s Wikipedia page: “The NCAA announced at the end of the season that its investigation into the basketball program had found the school guilty of violating numerous NCAA policies.[8] The NCAA deemed the violations so egregious that it seriously considered hitting the Wildcats with the “death penalty”, which would have shut down the entire basketball program (as opposed to simply being banned from postseason play) for up to two years.”

There is no valid reason for Jerry Tarkanian not to be in the College Hall of Fame.

                    10) One more thing on the College Hall of Fame: Norm Stewart is a 2007 inductee, but he never made a Final Four, went 8-8 in first round tournament games. Seriously?

                    9) When you see coaches at mid-majors getting fired these days after short coaching tenures, keep in mind that in the mid-90’s, Jay Wright went 31-51 in his first three years as Hofstra’s coach. Things turned out pretty well for him— he went 91-34 his last four years at Hofstra, before moving on to bigger and better things at Villanova.

                    8) This is first time since 2004 that team spending on baseball players’ salaries will decline from the year before.

                    7) Average major league payroll this season: $137,610,491.

                    6) As expected, Xavier promoted assistant Travis Steele to head coach to replace Chris Mack, who jumped ship to Louisville.

                    5) Of the 31 players who have 3,000 career hits, Ichiro Suzuki was 3+ years older than anyone else on the list when he got his first major league hit.

                    4) A Sarasota, FL homeowner found a surprise visitor in his swimming pool Friday night – an 11-foot alligator floating in the water. The gator began swimming away as it struggled to avoid capture. A deputy managed to drag the gator out of the pool with the help of a trapper.

                    3) If you had the White Sox as being the last American League unbeaten this season, you win!!!

                    2) Last Big 14 team to win the national title in basketball? Michigan State, in 2000.

1— Villanova took 40 3-pointers Saturday, only 25 2-pointers; wouldn’t be surprised if they move the college 3-point line back to where the FIBA line is.

                    • LeBron scores 27 as Cavs down East-leading Raptors again
                      April 4, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James scored 27 points, the last coming on a sensational layup, and the Cleveland Cavaliers gave the Toronto Raptors another reminder of what could lie ahead in the playoffs with a 112-106 victory on Tuesday night.

James added nine rebounds, six assists and helped put the Raptors away down the stretch with an artistic three-point play.

It was Cleveland's second win in two weeks over the Eastern Conference's top team, whose lead over second-place Boston continues to shrink. This time, the Cavaliers were much healthier than when they beat the Raptors on March 21 despite missing five rotational players and coach Tyronn Lue.

Jose Calderon added 19 points and Kevin Love had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavs, who are 9-1 since March 17.

DeMar DeRozan scored 19 and Jonas Valanciunas 17 for Toronto, which will host Boston on Wednesday.

                      HEAT 101, HAWKS 98

MIAMI (AP) - Hassan Whiteside's tip-in with a minute left put Miami up for good, Josh Richardson blocked a potential go-ahead shot in the final seconds and Heat clinched their 20th playoff spot in 30 seasons by rallying to beat Atlanta.

The Heat trailed 98-90 with less than 3 minutes left, then finished the game on an 11-0 run.

Tyler Johnson's 3-pointer got Miami within one, and Whiteside tipped in Josh Richardson's miss on the next possession. Atlanta had a chance to take the lead when Damion Lee got into the lane and tried a 10-footer with about 5 seconds left, but Richardson blocked it and the Heat controlled the rebound.

Richardson made a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds left. The Hawks' last-ditch 3-point try by John Collins was well short, wrapping up the postseason spot for the Heat.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Kevin Durant scored 34 points while being booed throughout the game, leading Golden State over Oklahoma City.

Klay Thompson added 20 points for the Warriors, who evened the season series at two wins apiece despite guard Stephen Curry missing his sixth straight game with a left MCL sprain.

Russell Westbrook had 44 points and 16 rebounds, and Paul George added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Thunder.

Golden State led 107-103 when a steal by Westbrook led to a dunk by Corey Brewer with 20 seconds left. Quinn Cook made two free throws at the other end with 18 seconds to play.

Westbrook quickly scored a layup to make it 109-107, but Golden State's Draymond Green went to the line with 10 seconds left and made two free throws to put the game out of reach.

                      ROCKETS 120, WIZARDS 104

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden had 38 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, leading Houston over the Washington

At 63-15, the Rockets already clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, but weren't interested in losing any momentum against Washington.

Clint Capela had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Houston, while Gerald Green had 16 points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc and one authoritative two-handed slam in the fourth.

Bradley Beal led Washington with 27 points, while Markieff Morris had 14 and Otto Porter, Jr. added 12.

                      76ERS 121, NETS 95

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - J.J. Redick scored 19 points and Ben Simmons had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Philadelphia to its 11th straight victory.

Neither Simmons nor Redick played in the fourth quarter for Philadelphia, which won its third consecutive contest without All-Star center Joel Embiid. Embiid had surgery on Saturday after suffering an orbital fracture in his left eye in Wednesday's 118-101 win over the Knicks. Embiid will be out for the remainder of the regular season and is slated to return for the playoffs, although his exact return date is not known.

The 76ers are headed to the postseason for the first time since 2012 and are vying for home-court advantage.

Marco Belinelli added 17 points for the 76ers.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 16 points for the Nets.

                      BUCKS 106, CELTICS 102

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 29 points and had a key block with 53 seconds left, Khris Middleton added 20 points and Milwaukee held off short-handed Boston.

Eric Bledsoe added 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting for the Bucks, who clinched their second straight winning season for the first time since back-to-back finishes over .500 in 1999-00 and 2000-01. One more win clinches a second consecutive postseason berth for Milwaukee.

Jaylen Brown scored 24 points for the Celtics, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

                      BULLS 120, HORNETS 114

CHICAGO (AP) - Lauri Markkanen scored 24 points and Sean Kilpatrick added 21 off the bench to lead Chicago over Charlotte.

Justin Holiday had 19 points and Bobby Portis added 16 for Chicago, which has won three straight.

Dwight Howard scored 23 points and Malik Monk had 21 for Charlotte, which has dropped four straight.

                      MAVERICKS 115, TRAIL BLAZERS 109

DALLAS (AP) - Dennis Smith Jr. scored 18 points, including a highlight-reel dunk to help keep lottery-bound Dallas ahead in a win over Portland, delaying the Trail Blazers' hopes of clinching home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

A hodge-podge lineup kept the Mavericks in front in the fourth quarter, with Maxi Kleber giving them their biggest lead at 104-94 on a 3-pointer with 3:13 remaining.

But Smith, the rookie first-round pick Dallas hopes to build its future around, was back on the floor with the Blazers trailing by six when he beat Damian Lillard to a loose ball , poked it past the star Portland guard, ran it down and bounced it one more time before leaping for the slam.

                      NUGGETS 107, PACERS 104

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic scored 30 points, Jamal Murray hit a clutch 3-pointer late - his only one of the game - and Denver received a boost to its playoff hopes by holding off Indiana.

Denver pulled within a half-game of New Orleans for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

What's more, the Nuggets now trail Minnesota by a game for the seventh spot and have two of their final four games against the Timberwolves.

Wilson Chandler donned a mask to protect a broken nose and struggled early with his shot, going 0 for 5 in the first half. Chandler finally found his touch in the third. He hit three 3-pointers to spark a run to open some breathing room.

Victor Oladipo had 25 points for the Pacers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, but remain fifth in the Eastern Conference.

                      JAZZ 117, LAKERS 110

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Ricky Rubio scored 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting, added eight assists and six rebounds, and Utah beat Los Angeles.

Donovan Mitchell added 26 points while Rudy Gobert chipped in 12 points, 16 rebounds and five assists. Six players scored in double figures to lead the Jazz to their third straight win.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 28 points and Kyle Kuzma had 26 for the Lakers.

                      SUNS 97, KINGS 94

PHOENIX (AP) - Josh Jackson scored 18 of his 28 points in the first half and Phoenix ended a franchise-record, 15-game losing streak with a victory over Sacramento.

Alex Len added 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Tyler Ulis had 13 points and nine assists as the Suns held the cold-shooting Kings to 37 percent shooting.

The Kings trailed by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter but had a chance to tie after forcing a turnover with 7 seconds remaining. Bogdan Bogdanovic and Justin Jackson missed potential game-tying 3-pointers before the final buzzer.

Bogdanovic led the Kings with 22 points and Jackson added 19 points and eight rebounds. Sacramento has lost five of six.

                      MAGIC 97, KNICKS 73

NEW YORK (AP) - Mario Hezonja scored 19 points, Jamel Artis added 16 off the bench, and Orlando beat New York.

Reserve Shelvin Mack had 12 points and Nikola Vucevic had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16 points and Kyle O'Quinn had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who lost their fourth straight.

The Magic limited the Knicks to 28 points in the second half and won the season series 3-1.

                          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                          13) Rams traded 1st and 6th-round draft picks to New England Tuesday for WR Brandin Cooks and a 4th-round pick. Two things about this:

                          a) I no longer have to worry about the Rams trading for Odell Beckham
                          b) Rams still have eight draft picks, but only one of their original picks- four of those eight picks are in the 6th round. Their first pick right now will be the 87th selection.

                          12) This means all those geniuses who do a mock draft every 36 hours get to do more of them, since the #23 pick moves to the Patriots. Still 22 days until the draft.

                          11) Louisville QB Lamar Jackson is being advised by his mother instead of by an agent. No one knows what this means exactly, since the mom is a private person and hasn’t said much. Will be curious to see if an agent is hired once a team drafts him, and negotiations for a contract begin.

One thing, for sure; Lamar Jackson is going to play QB, and only QB.

                          10) This was the 4th time in last five years the college basketball national champ went 6-0 vs spread in its NCAA tournament games.

                          9) This is a little hard to believe, but they said on TV Monday night that Padres’ reliever Adam Cimber is first the major leaguer ever to wear number 90.

                          8) Arizona 8, Dodgers 7 (15)— This game ended at 3:26am Tuesday morning; had the game gone to the 16th inning, both teams would’ve used position players to pitch.

                          7) Two pitchers have already been removed from games this season with a no-hitter going: Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson Saturday in Baltimore, Pirates’ Trevor Williams Sunday in Detroit.

                          6) A’s drew only 7,416 fans for their home game with Texas Monday night, their smallest home crowd since 2003. Oy.

A’s drew 9,157 fans last night on Free Parking Tuesday, which doesn’t seem like a big promotion until you realize they charge $30 to park a car in Oakland.

                          5) There were 144 hitters last year who got enough plate appearances to qualify for the batting title; 89 of them hit 20+ home runs, which means 61.8% of hitters who qualified for the batting title hit 20+ homers. In 2014, that number was 32%.

                          4) Number of times a pitcher went thru the opponent’s whole lineup three times in a game:
                          2017 1,196 (39.9 per team, out of 162 games)
                          2016 1,405
                          2015 1,670
                          2014 1,906

Unless the guy is an ace or really rolling that night, starting pitchers aren’t allowed to go thru the lineup three times anymore.

                          3) Rhode Island Rams were apparently going to hire Rick Pitino as their new basketball coach, until the school president put the kibosh on that. Now what?

                          2) San Diego 3B Christian Villanueva was 0-4 for the season before Tuesday; he hit three homers for the Padres last night in their win over Colorado.

1— Brewers 5, Cardinals 4— Christian Yelich tied game with a dramatic two-out HR in the 9th, then Ryan Braun won it with a walk-off tater.

This was the first game in MLB history where the first two batters of the game homered, and also the last two.
