Game of the Night - Boston at Phoenix, NBA TV 10:05 ET

The Celtics were down at halftime in Sacramento on Sunday, surrendering 60 points against a Kings team missing leading scorer Zach Randolph. On the heels of announcing that Kyrie Irving would miss at least three weeks after undergoing “minor” knee surgery on Saturday, Boston wasn’t putting together a reassuring performance through 24 minutes against one of the league’s worst teams.

That Brad Stevens got everyone to buy in on clamping down defensively in what ended up being a 104-93 victory where the Celtics gave up just 33 second-half points is a great sign, because they’re no longer going to have one of the game’s top closers to pull games out down the stretch.

The NBA schedule stops for no one, and it is looking increasingly likely that Boston will tip off Game 1 of the playoffs at home without its top two offseason acquisitions, Irving and Gordon Hayward, who went down in the regular-season’s opening minute.

Boston has been cursed by injuries this month, the latest of which is the most significant since the team was counting on Irving’s championship pedigree to help serve as the stabilizing force for a young roster. Al Horford is capable of leading the group in that capacity, while Marcus Smart’s return from a broken thumb should help the team get out of a first round where they likely won’t be able to count on Irving’s contributions until late in a series.

“We hope. Who knows? Marcus was six to eight weeks before basketball activity and Kyrie is three to six before basketball activity,” Stevens told the Boston Herald prior to Sunday’s game in Sacramento. “Again, that’s basketball activity. There’s a big difference between that and playing, so we don’t know when we’re going to have those guys back.

“I’ve texted with him. Left him a message this morning and haven’t heard back. But the timeline will be determined on how he feels and how quickly he can get back out on the court and everything else. There’s still a process after that, too, to be ready to play in a game.”

Smart tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right shooting hand upon diving for a loose ball against the Pacers on March 11. Second-year wing Jaylen Brown has missed time due to a concussion and is just getting back in a rhythm. Promising German big man Daniel Theis after undergoing knee surgery early in the month. After coming out of the All-Star break with four straight wins, bad breaks have put a major damper on their aspirations of winning another Eastern Conference title.

Considering they’ll be shorthanded throughout April, it’s unlikely that Boston will be able to catch Toronto for the top record in the East. The teams will meet at TD Garden on March 31 and at the Air Canada Centre on April 4, so they will decide things on the floor. The Raptors appear to have a significant edge, carrying a 3.5-game cushion into the week in addition to a completely healthy roster despite losing at home against the Clippers.

Toronto will also have three full days without action to prepare for the Celtics, who are continuing a four-game road trip with tonight’s second of a back-to-back against depleted Phoenix. Boston will face Utah on Wednesday and is currently in a stretch where it is playing eight of 10 games away from home, so we’ll see how resilient they are after coming up with a big second half in California’s capital city.

Terry Rozier has been handed the reins to the Celtics’ offense and should be the primary catalyst at both ends of the floor. He went 12-for-16 from the floor against the Kings, hitting eight 3-pointers to score a career-high 33 points. He was one 3-pointer shy of tying Boston’s all-time record for single-game makes from beyond the arc.

Brown contributed 19 points in his return from the NBA’s concussion protocol, so it remains to be seen whether the Celtics are cautious with him tonight in spite of their lack of depth. Marcus Morris sat in Sacramento after spraining an ankle in Friday’s win in Portland, so winning in Phoenix is likely to hinge on getting production from Greg Monroe, Semi Ojeleye and Abdel Nader off the bench.

The Suns could provide a stiffer challenge if Devin Booker is able to return from a hand sprain that has sidelined him the last few games, but his status is currently up in the air. There’s no line on this one yet as a result. Forward T.J. Warren is doubtful due to a knee injury that has kept him out of the mix, allowing rookie Josh Jackson to get more touches in the offense.

Phoenix has lost a league-worst 11 straight games and enters this game with the NBA’s worst record, a half-game back of Memphis. The Suns are 1-21 since Feb. 2, defeating only the Grizzlies. They’ve beaten only two teams with winning records since mid-December, so this is a game the Celtics should be able to claim despite their injury woes.

Boston won its 50th game of the season against Sacramento and is closing in on its projected win total (53.5) in spite of March’s attrition. Even if they collapse in April, the Celtics are unlikely to finish any lower than second in the East, which would currently draw Giannis Antetokounmpo-led Milwaukee. Miami, who is 2-1 against the Celtics and have received a boost from Kelly Olynyk of late, is another potential first-round foe, sitting in eighth place as the week begins.

The Westgate Superbook gave Boston 4-to-1 odds to get out of the Eastern Conference when updating their numbers last Monday, ranking it behind the Raptors (5/6) and Cavs (7/4). Irving’s knee surgery won’t help matters, but he’s expected to make a full recovery so I don’t anticipate anyone overreacting to his absence. It will be interesting to see what happens with Golden State considering Stephen Curry is expected to miss the first round of the Western Conference playoffs following his own knee trouble.

The Celtics are playing only their second back-to-back since the All-Star break -- their first this entire month. They won a road back-to-back at Detroit and New York on Feb. 23-24 to improve to 7-4 on the second night of such situations this season. They've got two more remaining in April, with the next one coming in Milwaukee and Toronto next week, making it the most important of the season.

    Injury Report

The Pistons and Hornets probably have to realistically win out in order to make the playoffs, so both take the court as home favorites in must-win situations.

The Lakers are making their first trip into Detroit's new Little Caesar's Arena and should have Julius Randle available despite an ankle tweak suffered in Saturday's win in Memphis. He's shot nearly 58 percent from the field this month, averagaing 22.8 points and 9.8 rebounds and should again be the team's primary catalyst with Brandon Ingram still out due to a hip injury. He's listed as doubtful, while Isaiah Thomas has been ruled out due to a sore hip.

Detroit may be without Stanley Johnson, who left Saturday's game against the Bulls with a right glute injury.

Nicolas Batum has been out with an achilles injury that the Hornets have persevered through, but he's been upgraded to questionable and may participate against the visiting Knicks. Cody Zeller (knee) remains out, while New York big man Kyle O'Quinn is questionable with a hip strain.

The Nuggets won't have shooting guard Gary Harris against the 76ers since he's targeting a Friday return from a knee injury that's cost him the last few games. Denver has won consecutive games but remains in last place in the Northwest Division, 1.5 games behind Utah and Minnesota in the race for the final few playoff spots available in the West.

The Timberwolves are getting closer to getting Jimmy Bulter back from a knee injury, but will have to make due without him tonight against Memphis. Derrick Rose has provided a boost, but is dealing with an ankle issue and may not be available against Memphis.

The Grizzlies won't have Tyreke Evans available again and list Chandler Parsons as questionable due to knee soreness.

      • Fultz helps 76ers beat Nuggets, 123-104
        March 26, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Markelle Fultz had 10 points and eight assists in his first game since October, helping the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Denver Nuggets 123-104 on Monday night.

The Sixers and their fans wanted the No. 1 pick to play and - after five often-confusing months - they got him.

The first pick of the 2017 draft shot an air ball, had three shots blocked and artfully attacked the lane, flashing glimpses of what has made him both a mystery project and prominent prospect.

With a playoff berth clinched for the first time since 2012, the 76ers and Fultz decided the time was right for the guard to return from an injured shoulder and busted confidence that had cost him all but four games of his rookie season.

Joel Embiid had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Sixers. Will Barton led Denver with 25 points.

        GRIZZLIES 101, TIMBERWOLVES 93

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Wayne Selden scored 23 points, Marc Gasol had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, and the Grizzlies snapped a 17-game road losing streak

Selden and Gasol each hit four 3-pointers as Memphis went 15 of 31 from beyond the arc while dealing a blow to Minnesota's playoff hopes.

The Timberwolves (42-33) dropped to eighth in the Western Conference standings, a half-game back of idle Utah.

Jeff Teague had 25 points and seven assists for Minnesota, which lost its second straight game and dropped to 6-7 since All-Star Jimmy Butler was lost to a knee injury.

        HORNETS 137, KNICKS 128, OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker had 11 points of his 31 points and three assists in overtime, and Charlotte earned its fourth straight victory.

Walker hit a late 3-pointer to help send the game into overtime and then took over.

Walker was 4 for 4 in the extra period with three 3-pointers to outduel New York's Trey Burke, who finished with a career-high 42 points on 19-of-31 shooting and 12 assists.

Dwight Howard had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Hornets.

Michael Beasley added 27 points for the Knicks, who fell to 9-30 on the road.

        CELTICS 102, SUNS 94

PHOENIX (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 23 points, Marcus Morris added 20 in three quarters before leaving with an injury and Boston beat Phoenix.

Tatum surpassed 1,000 points for the season, and Boston won its fourth straight to move to three games behind the Toronto Raptors for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Morris, a former Sun, re-injured a sprained right ankle that forced him out of the Celtics' game Sunday at Sacramento. He didn't play in the fourth quarter.

Josh Jackson led the Suns with 23 points. He has scored 15 or more in seven straight games, but the Suns lost their 12th consecutive game and have dropped 27 of 29.

        PISTONS 112, LAKERS 106

DETROIT (AP) - Reggie Jackson scored 20 points and Reggie Bullock had 16, leading the Pistons to the victory.

Detroit (34-40) won for the fourth time in five games, but trails idle Miami by five games for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

With Blake Griffin reduced to 24 minutes due to foul trouble, reserve Anthony Tolliver added 15 points as the Pistons put six players in double figures.

Julius Randle had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Los Angeles, and Lonzo Ball finished with 15 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. Kyle Kuzma had 20 points and 11 boards.

I think the city will love him. He’ll say the right things. He’ll come in and represent well. I think he kind of represents what Cleveland is. And then if I was one of the New York teams, I’d take Josh (Rosen) like that. I think they’re both going to be great pros.”

            *******************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

            13) Allow me to start today with a rant……

Texas-Arlington’s basketball team went 72-33 the last three years, 37-19 in conference games, but they didn’t win the Sun Belt tourney in the last 10 years- their only NCAA appearance was in 2008, which was the second year as head coach for Scott Cross, a UTA alum.

Tex-Arlington fired Cross Monday, after a 21-13 season when the Mavericks had the most experienced team in America, starting five seniors. Why?

Firing a mid-major coach who is an alumnus and is an honest guy (the school’s statement went out of its way to say so) and who won 72 games the last three years? No bueno.

You wonder why coaches break the rules so they can win? Stuff like that is why……

            12) Whoever the next coach is at Arlington has a full rebuild on his hands; of the eight players who played in the Sun Belt final vs Georgia State, seven were seniors.

            11) I saw this on Twitter Monday night and I’m borrowing (stealing) it. The only seven players who hit 2+ homers in an Opening Day game more than once:

Adam Dunn, Juan Gonzalez, Eddie Mathews, Raul Mondesi, Xavier Nady, Albert Pujols, Joe Torre.

            10) Bronx 1B Greg Bird is out 6-8 weeks because of an ankle injury that requires surgery; they could move Neil Walker to 1B and play young Tyler Wade at 2B.

            9) I’m watching Billions on Showtime (a great show) Sunday night and one of the characters goes into a New York City deli and orders an egg cream, which looks like a milkshake but I have no idea what it really is. It looked good, so I did some research.

Several people had no idea what I was talking about, but my cousin hooked me up with some knowledge: 1/2 cup of whole milk, one cup of seltzer, two tablespoons of chocolate syrup.

I’ll report back when I have one of these and let you know if they’re any good.

            8) There are 32 NFL teams, two coordinators per team. Of those 64 high-paying jobs, 31 of them have changed hands since last season ended. Football coaches are nomads.

            7) Los Angeles Rams signed Ndamukong Suh to a 1-year, $14M deal; Rams had 6th-most cap space in the league before this signing- their defensive line should be really good.

            6) ESPN’s Chris Mortensen predicts the college QB’s will be drafted in this order next month:

            “Darnold, Allen, Mayfield, Rosen”

Surprising to me that Mayfield passed Rosen, since Rosen is considered the best pure passer of the rookie QB’s right now. As always, the draft will be interesting.

            5) NASCAR race got snowed out in Virginia Sunday; weird having a car race live on TV at 2:00 on a Monday afternoon.

            4) RIP Wayne Huizenga, 80; he founded three Fortune 500 companies (Waste Management , Blockbuster and AutoNation), and also owned the Dolphins-Marlins-Florida Panthers.

RIP Zeke Upshaw 26, a player in the G-League who collapsed during a game last week and later passed away, apparently due to heart failure.

            3) Sounds like Tubby Smith will surface as the coach at High Point, his alma mater. Panthers fired former North Carolina player Scott Cherry after nine years as coach, despite his going 68-36 in Big South games the last six years.

            2) According to the Associated Press, the average salary in major league baseball is on track to be around the same as last year’s $4.45 million, maybe slightly higher.

1— Daytime television is horrendous, except for March, when MLB Network shows spring training games every day. With baseball season starting Thursday, that’ll be the end of good daytime TV for 11 months. Unless you like politics, but I’m not one of those people.

                    • Tuesday's Tip Sheet
                      March 26, 2018

Game of the Night: Cavaliers at Heat – 8:05 PM EST

There’s plenty of history between good friends and former running mates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. The two of them were drafted in 2003, captured a pair of titles in Miami, and were teammates in Cleveland for the first half of the season. Wade returned to the Heat in a February deadline deal following a year away from Miami, while James and the Cavaliers are trying to move forward with its revamped roster.

Cleveland (44-29 SU, 26-46-1 ATS) closed the first half with four straight wins, but lost seven of its next 12 games. The Cavaliers are back on track by winning five consecutive contests, including each of the past four with Kevin Love back in the lineup. Love missed 20 games with a hand injury, but the forward is back to performing at an All-Star level by producing a pair of double-doubles and averaging 20.2 points per game in the last four contests.

Miami (39-35 SU, 37-31-6 ATS) returns home following a pair of road defeats at Oklahoma City and Indiana. The Heat played in their third overtime game in a 12-day span in Sunday’s 113-107 setback to the Pacers, as Indiana picked up the front-door cover as 3 ½-point favorites. Returning home will benefit the Heat, who have won nine of their last 10 games at American Airlines Arena, while compiling an 8-1-1 ATS mark.

The Cavaliers have captured the first two meetings with the Heat this season, both at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland held off Miami in the first matchup in late November, 108-97 as the Cavs built a 75-49 halftime lead. The Heat fell by two in the next meeting in January, 91-89, but cashed as 2 ½-point underdogs. Miami has won 13 consecutive home matchups with Cleveland dating back to December 2010, while the Heat own a 5-1 ATS mark in the last six meetings in south Florida.

                      Disappearing Act

The lead in the Southeast division is quickly slipping through Washington’s hands as the Wizards (40-33 SU, 33-39-1 ATS) own a one-game lead over the Heat. Washington looks to end a three-game skid, capped off by a surprising 101-97 home setback to New York on Saturday as 10 ½-point favorites. The first loss in this stretch came at San Antonio last Wednesday, 98-90 as 5 ½-point underdogs, the fourth consecutive loss to the Spurs since December 2015.

San Antonio (43-31 SU, 39-33-2 ATS) swept its six-game homestand prior to Sunday’s 106-103 defeat at Milwaukee as two-point favorites. That loss marked the eighth setback in the last nine road games for the Spurs, while San Antonio has allowed at least 104 points in each of its past four contests away from AT&T Center. In last Wednesday’s victory over the Wizards, LaMarcus Aldridge led San Antonio with 27 points, while the Spurs limited Washington to 42% shooting from the floor.

                      Golden Wait

The Warriors (54-19 SU, 31-41-1 ATS) are the epitome of the walking wound as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are all sidelined. Golden State fell on Sunday night to Utah as a lengthy 8 ½-point home underdogs, 110-91 without the aforementioned four stars in the lineups. The Warriors look to avoid consecutive losses for the third time this season as they face the Pacers for the first time in 2017-18.

Indiana (43-31 SU, 42-32 ATS) is fresh off a pair of close home wins over the Clippers and Heat to clinch a playoff berth for the third straight season. The Pacers on a late-season four-game west coast swing which continues against the Kings, Clippers, and Nuggets, while returning home to face the Warriors on April 5. Indiana has dropped four consecutive matchups with Golden State, including a 37-point setback in Indianapolis and a 36-point drubbing in Oakland last season.

                      Quick Return

Following a 2-2 road swing capped off by a comeback victory at Toronto on Sunday, the Clippers (39-34 SU, 39-33-1 ATS) face the Bucks for the second time in less than a week. Los Angeles outlasted Milwaukee last Wednesday, 127-120 as 5 ½-point underdogs, led by DeAndre Jordan’s 25-point and 22-rebound effort. The Clippers hit the road immediately following the game for two more on the highway at Phoenix on Wednesday and Portland on Friday.

The Bucks (39-34 SU, 29-39-5 ATS) venture to the west coast for four contests, looking to capitalize off Sunday’s home victory over the Spurs. Milwaukee is riding an eight-game OVER streak, while topping the 117-point mark in seven of those contests. Since late January, the Bucks own a 2-6 SU/ATS record as a road underdog, but managed to pull out a 97-96 triumph at Staples Center over the Clippers last March as 7 ½-point ‘dogs.

                      Playoff Preview?

Entering Tuesday’s action, the Blazers (45-28 SU, 41-27-5 ATS) own a two-game edge over the Thunder for the third playoff position in the Western Conference. New Orleans and San Antonio are tied for fifth as the Blazers and Pelicans could meet in a potential 3/6 matchup in the opening round of the playoffs. Portland dropped two straight following a 13-game winning streak, but the Blazers bounced back from their recent cold spell to hold off Oklahoma City on Sunday, 108-105, while improving to 14-2 ATS in the last 16 contests.

A tired Pelicans (43-31 SU, 40-33-1 ATS) squad saw its four-game winning streak go up in smoke in Saturday’s 114-91 drubbing at Houston. New Orleans had finished off three wins in three nights from Tuesday through Thursday last week prior to Saturday’s 23-point defeat. The Pelicans have won eight of their last nine in the role of a home favorite, while topping the Blazers in two of the first three matchups this season.

                        • Rockets pound Bulls 118-86, win 10th straight game
                          March 27, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Eric Gordon scored 31 points and tied a career high with eight 3-pointers on a night James Harden sat out to rest, and the Houston Rockets got their 10th straight win with a 118-86 rout of the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.

Trevor Ariza added 21 points and Chris Paul had 13 points and 10 assists in his return after missing the last three games with a sore hamstring.

The NBA-leading Rockets became the first team since San Antonio in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season to have three winning streaks of at least 10 games in a season. They won 14 in a row from Nov. 16-Dec. 18 and 17 straight from Jan. 28-March 7.

Lauri Markkanen returned after missing Saturday's game with lower back spasms and had 22 points for the Bulls, who dropped their sixth straight.

                          WIZARDS 116, SPURS 106

WASHINGTON (AP) - Markieff Morris shot 7 of 7 from the floor for 15 points, Otto Porter Jr. added 14 and Washington beat San Antonio to snap a three-game losing streak.

San Antonio lost for just the second time in eight games but may have been dealt a more serious blow with a left knee injury to star LaMarcus Aldridge, who was the game's leading scorer with 13 points before he limped off late in the second quarter. Aldridge is the biggest reason the Spurs have stayed afloat without Kawhi Leonard most of this season.

Washington lit up the NBA's top scoring defense to improve to 15-11 in 26 consecutive games without five-time All-Star guard John Wall, who is close to returning from left knee surgery. The Wizards had dropped to sixth in the East by losing five of seven and could clinch a playoff spot as early as Thursday.

                          HEAT 98, CAVALIERS 79

MIAMI (AP) - Kelly Olynyk scored 19 points, Dwyane Wade blocked a pair of shots by LeBron James as part of a stifling defensive effort by Miami, and the Heat had little trouble on the way to beating Cleveland.

Josh Richardson and James Johnson each scored 15 points for Miami, which led 54-34 at halftime and has won 10 of its last 11 home games. Wade finished with 12 against the team he spent part of this season with before getting traded back to Miami.

Goran Dragic added 10 for the Heat, who could clinch an Eastern Conference playoff spot by week's end.

James finished with 18 points for the Cavaliers, whose previous season low for points was 88. The Cavs are 1-13 this season when held under 100; they're 43-17 when scoring more than 100.

                          TRAIL BLAZERS 107, PELICANS 103

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 20 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter, and Portland beat New Orleans.

Lillard hit his first six shots of the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers, to push Portland into its first lead since early in the first quarter. He made two free throws with 1.3 seconds left to seal the victory.

Anthony Davis had 36 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks for the Pelicans, with 22 points coming after he rolled his right ankle and briefly came out of the game with 5:15 left in the third quarter. Jrue Holiday had 21 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for New Orleans.

                          RAPTORS 114, NUGGETS 110

TORONTO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas, and Fred VanVleet each scored 15 points and Toronto beat Denver.

Jakob Poeltl scored all of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, including eight straight for Toronto at one stretch.

Serge Ibaka had 13 points, Pascal Siakam 12 and Kyle Lowry 11 as the Raptors improved to 31-7 at home.

Toronto, which lost to the Clippers on Sunday, avoided what would have been its fifth two-game losing streak. The Eastern Conference-leading Raptors have yet to lose three consecutive games this season.

Nikola Jokic had 29 points and 16 rebounds, and Paul Millsap scored 20 points for the Nuggets, who lost their second straight and fourth in six games.

                                Wednesday’s List of 13; Mid-week musings……

                                13) I love numbers, but the analytics revolution in baseball is overdone. There is no way you can quantify a player’s value to the team with a single number— too many variables are involved that cannot be and never will be able to be measured. Here is one example that actually happened:

Two years ago, Player A and Player B were teammates; Player A was getting paid to wear a certain make of spikes, but he wasn’t wearing them. One day, while Player A was talking to the sales rep from the company that was paying him, Player B comes over and tells the sales rep that Player A isn’t wearing his company’s spikes. A fight ensues in the clubhouse.

Player B gets his ass kicked and goes on the DL; Player A gets suspended and the team suffers, since they weren’t very good to begin with and they were now without two decent hitters.

So, analytics people, quantify that for me; make that a part of WAR, when a guy is such a cruddy teammate that his teammate is provoked into kicking his butt!?!? These players live/travel together from March-September. Being a good teammate is an underrated variable.

                                12) March 22, 2014, the Astros released JD Martinez, just let him walk. He’s hit 128 HR’s in the four years since, and now makes $22M a year in Boston. Astros are now World Champs, despite giving away a player of Martinez’ ability- they’ve won 271 games the last three years. Go figure.

                                11) Pitt Panthers named Duke assistant Jeff Capel their new head basketball coach; he was previously head coach at VCU, Oklahoma before spending seven years as a Duke assistant. Capel was 79-41 as VCU’s coach (50-22 in conference), 83-69 at Oklahoma (33-43 in conference).

                                10) Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood said a main reason Detroit didn’t win its bid to host the NFL Draft this year was a date conflict at Ford Field with a robotics convention. Oy.

Detroit also has to start the 2018 season on the road because Ford Field is booked for a concert on September 9— Ed Sheeran, whose concert tour is messing with the first half of the NFL schedule in several cities.

                                9) When basketball Hall of Famer Bill Walton was in high school/college, he once went 5.5 years without losing a game. His HS team won its last 16 games his junior year and he didn’t lose again until the second half of his senior year at UCLA.

                                8) Las Vegas Golden Knights were 500-1 to win the Stanley Cup when their first NHL season started back in October. Now they’re 7-1 to win the Cup. Best expansion season ever in any of the four major sports.

St Louis Blues made the Stanley Cup finals in 1968, but that was when the league expanded from 6 to 12 teams and the six new teams were all in the West, so one of them had to make the finals.

                                7) Interesting quirk to this year’s baseball schedule; A’s visit San Francisco the last three games before the All-Star break, then the Giants visit Oakland the first three games after the break.

                                6) Louisville paid a search firm $150,000 to find its new athletic director- they wound up hiring the guy who was the interim AD. So they gave a search firm $150K to hire the guy who was already in the job. Something is amiss…….

                                5) Speaking of the Cardinals, Louisville hired Xavier coach Chris Mack as its new basketball coach, which is a kick in the teeth to the Big East. Mack is a Xavier alum who was a 2-year captain of the Musketeers, but as the saying goes, “Whenever you don’t think its about the money, remember: Its always about the money.”

Mack was making just under $1.7M a year at Xavier; he’s making $4M now. His wife is from Louisville, but the $4M was the deal-maker, for sure.

                                4) Does New Jersey Giants coach Pat Shurmur have special insight into college players in this year’s draft? His son Kyle is Vanderbilt’s quarterback, who played against NC State LB Bradley Chubb in the 2016 independence Bowl. Giants may very well draft Chubb next month.

                                3) Butler/Florida will play a home/home basketball series the next two years; the series was negotiated by the two head coaches……on Twitter. Welcome to 2018.

                                2) ESPN had a mike on Mookie Betts while he was playing right field for the Red Sox Tuesday; as a ball was hit over his head into the corner, he says, “I ain’t getting this one, boys.” They were talking to him in between pitches while the game was going on. Good TV, but one more example of how spring training might be a little too long.

                                1) Former major league catcher Paul Loduca was on TVG as a horse race handicapper; he likes gambling. Here are his over/under team win total picks for 2018:
                                Twins, over 83.5 wins
                                Red Sox, over 91.5 wins
                                Rockies, over 81.5 wins
                                Cardinals, under 86 wins
