            Friday NBA Best Bet

            Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Philadelphia 76ers

There's nothing quite like getting a game on the schedule this late in the year that means so much in terms of playoff positioning. Both teams in question you know will give a strong effort to win, and anticipation of what's directly down the road starts to grip the NBA.

Tonight we get a Cleveland/Philadelphia game in the city of Brotherly Love, with third place in the Eastern Conference on the line. These two teams are currently seperated by a half-game in that race for 3rd and the winner tonight (especially if it's Cleveland) will be in the driver's seat for that spot. Who do I believe it will be?

Philadelphia (-4); Total set at 224

Cleveland nearly got caught looking ahead to this game last night, when, after jumping out to a 13-point lead after the 1st quarter, the Caves were all of a sudden trailing by eight going into the fourth. It was reminiscent of all of Cleveland's struggles they had for the first few months of the year, but this different looking Cavs team were able to get it together in time, win the 4th quarter by 12 points and win the game by four.

Now Cleveland catches a few points as this is the second half of a back-to-back, third game in four nights, and fourth game in six. That's a tough uphill battle the Cavs are going to have to deal with tonight, not to mention that this Philadelphia team has won 12 in a row as well. That type of run up to a critical game like this makes it easy to see why the Sixers are laying multiple possessions tonight, but are you going to lay that number against LeBron and the Cavs tonight.

Cleveland is known for “manipulating” the standings the way they want when they can, and that comment about expecting both teams giving a strong effort in a game like this might not mean as much to this Cavaliers team.

For them, it's all about the idea of playing either Indiana (or likely Miami) in the 1st round of the playoffs and given that they aer 1-3 SU against the Pacers this year, chances are we see the Cavs play hard the rest of the regular season (or at least tonight) to avoid that matchup in the 4 vs 5 if they can. That means taking care of business tonight against a Philly team that keeps getting more and more love this evening.

Cavaliers G George Hill has been announced as “out” for the game, but I'm not so sure his absence is worthy of about a full point here. People just continue to believe in this Sixers team as the city seems to be full of champions this year (Philadelphia Eagles, Villanova), but as a colleague of mine pointed out a few days ago, this great Sixers run of 12 straight wins may not be all that it seems.

Beating a Detroit team on Wednesday stretched this Sixers streak to 12 games but it still doesn't add to the strength of opponent Philadelphia has beaten during that run. Tonight they get a Cavs team that's a huge step up in competition level, and one that's in direct competition with Philly for the 3rd seed both organizations are trying to claim.

There is a good chance that this turns into a very big rude awakening for the Sixers tonight – especially without Embiid – and I don't see the Cavs giving this one up. We already know that #5 Indiana is not the team Cleveland wants to deal with first, so there will be no laying down from the Cavs tonight.

That's why, despite the 12-game win streak for Philly and rough schedule spot for Cleveland, I do believe that at some level the wrong team is favored tonight, and for certain the Cavs are getting too many points here. Remember, it's not like this isn't the fourth game in six nights as well for the Sixers (third in four nights too), they just don't have to deal with it being a back-to-back this evening. Fatigue could catch up with the guys on the Sixers side too and if that happens there there is no way they come close to covering this number tonight.

What it boils down to is the idea that I trust Cleveland to show up much more often with their best game in a spot like this when they've got an achievable goal (3rd place) attainable. The Cavs still look to send messages to East teams that the conference still runs through Cleveland and tonight it's the Sixers team to receive that statement.

            Best Bet: Cleveland +4

            • Friday's Tip Sheet
              April 6, 2018

              Game of the Night: Cavaliers at 76ers (-3 ½, 224) – 7:00 PM EST

The famed “Process” in Philadelphia has finally turned the corner as the 76ers (48-30 SU, 46-30-2 ATS) are returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. The Sixers are riding a 12-game winning streak following Wednesday’s 115-108 victory at Detroit, while coming off their 10th consecutive cover.

Six players posted double-figures for Philadelphia, led by J.J. Redick’s 25 points and five three-pointers. Philadelphia sits in the fourth position in the Eastern Conference playoff race, which would pit them against Indiana in the opening round.

The Cavaliers (49-30 SU, 30-48-1 ATS) travel to the City of Brotherly Love with no rest following Thursday’s home victory over the Wizards. Cleveland is surging at the right time by winning 10 of its past 11 games, while covering eight times in this stretch. Since the overhaul of its roster in early February, the Cavs have posted a 9-4 road record the last 14 away from Quicken Loans Arena since a 1-11 run from late December through February 6.

Cleveland captured the first two matchups with Philadelphia this season, but the 76ers won the last battle at Quicken Loans Arena in March, 108-97. All three meetings have finished UNDER the total, while the Cavaliers have cashed the UNDER in five of the last six games.

              Life Without Kyrie

The Celtics (53-25 SU, 48-28-2 ATS) had high expectations coming into the season after acquiring All-Star guard Kyrie Irving from the Cavaliers. Boston will likely finish as the second seed in the Eastern Conference, but Irving won’t see any action in the postseason after missing the last 11 games with a knee injury. Irving is scheduled for a knee procedure as the Celtics look to put an end to a two-game skid against the Bulls.

Boston owns a 1-5 ATS record in its last six opportunities as a home favorite, as Chicago (27-51 SU, 41-36-1 ATS) is riding a three-game winning streak. The Bulls have cashed four straight contests overall, including outright home underdog victories over Washington and Charlotte. Chicago crushed Boston in the first matchup this season at the United Center (without Irving), but the Celtics have bounced back with double-digit wins in the last two meetings.

              Second Round Preview?

Plenty to still has to be figured out in the Eastern Conference playoff race as far as seeding goes, even though all eight spots have been spoken for. The Raptors (56-22 SU, 41-37 ATS) currently sit in the top spot in the East as Toronto picked up some breathing room after blowing out Boston on Wednesday, 96-78 as 7 ½-point favorites. Dwane Casey’s team snapped an 0-9 ATS slump with that victory, while also ending a brief two-game slide.

Toronto hosts Indiana as the Pacers (47-32 SU, 46-33 ATS) are the fifth seed in the East, which sets up a potential second round playoff matchup. The Pacers head north of the border following a 126-106 blowout of the Warriors last night as 2 ½-point underdogs. Indiana knocked down 15 three-pointers in the win, including six treys from Bojan Bogdanovic. The Pacers have cashed in six of the last seven games, but have dropped two of three meetings with the Raptors this season.

              Minnesota Misery

Things can go in many different directions over the next six days in the Western Conference, as two games separate teams 4-9. In that mix is Minnesota (44-35 SU, 34-42-3 ATS), who sits as the eighth seed after losing at Denver on Thursday, 100-96. The Wolves managed a cover as 5 ½-point underdogs, but Minnesota is riding an incredible, but unusual streak. Tom Thibodeau’s club has won two straight, lost two straight, won two in a row, lost two in a row, won two more, then lost two more since March 11.

Judging that streak, the Wolves should bounce back tonight against the Lakers after losing two straight. Los Angeles (34-44 SU, 41-37 ATS) ended a three-game slide in Wednesday’s overtime triumph over San Antonio, as rookie Kyle Kuzma led the Lakers with 30 points. L.A. has struggled against Minnesota this season by dropped all three meetings, including a pair of losses 17 points or more.

              Washed Out

The Wizards (42-37 SU, 36-42-1 ATS) are going in the wrong direction at the wrong time by losing three straight, including Thursday’s late meltdown at Cleveland. Washington threw away a 10-point lead with three minutes remaining as the Wizards fell, 119-115, but they covered as six-point underdogs. John Wall led Washington with 28 points and 14 assists, but the Wizards dropped to 0-5 in the last five games away from Capital One Arena.

Washington returns to D.C. to host Atlanta (22-57 SU, 37-39-3 ATS), who has lost seven of its previous eight games. Atlanta’s offense is nowhere to be found without top scorer Dennis Schroder, as the Hawks have scored less than 100 points in eight of the past nine contests. All three matchups between these division rivals have been blowouts with Washington posting a 2-1 record, including a 129-104 rout at Philips Arena in late January.

                • 76ers edge Cavs for 13th straight win
                  April 6, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Ben Simmons topped LeBron James in a triple-double battle to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to their 13th straight win in their biggest game in six years, 132-130 over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night.

With a buzz in the city over the Sixers that hasn't been felt since the pre-Process days, they romped toward a 30-point lead over the Cavs in the first half and scored 78 points at the break.

Simmons had 27 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists. James had 44 points (17-of-29 shooting), 11 assists and 11 rebounds, bringing the Cavaliers to the brink of an epic comeback.

The Sixers (49-30) moved into third place in the Eastern Conference over the Cavaliers (49-31).

                  RAPTORS 92, PACERS 73

TORONTO (AP) - Serge Ibaka scored a season-high 25 points, DeMar DeRozan had 12 and Toronto beat Indiana, clinching first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time in team history.

Jakbo Poeltl scored 10 points as the Raptors set franchise records for wins in a season (57) and home wins (33).

Kyle Lowry had nine points and nine assists, and Jonas Valanciunas added 12 rebounds for Toronto, which never trailed in its ninth consecutive home victory over the Pacers. Indiana last won north of the border on March 1, 2013.

Glenn Robinson III scored 12 points and Trevor Booker had 11 for the Pacers. Indiana shot 26 for 87 (29.9 percent) and set season-lows in points, made field goals, and field goal percentage.

                  CELTICS 111, BULLS 104

BOSTON (AP) - Greg Monroe came off the bench and had 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, and Boston defeated Chicago.

It is Monroe's second career triple-double. Jaylen Brown finished with a career-high 32 points and four rebounds.

With Al Horford and Jayson Tatum given the night off to rest, Boston went deep into its bench against a Chicago team that's one of the worst in the NBA.

Chicago led by as many as 11 in the first half before Boston trimmed it to 58-55 at the half. But the Celtics outscored the Bulls 56-46 over the final two quarters.

Sean Kilpatrick led the Bulls with 24 points. Lauri Markkanen added 20 points and five rebounds.

                  HAWKS 103 WIZARDS 97

WASHINGTON (AP) - Taurean Prince scored 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and Atlanta beat Washington.

Washington dropped its fourth straight game and fell into eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

Bradley Beal led the Wizards with 32 points.

Wizards point guard John Wall sat out what was the second of back-to-back games for Washington, and forward Markieff Morris left with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter when he picked up two quick technical fouls.

Six Hawks scored in double figures. Reserve Tyler Dorsey had 22 points, including 13 in the second half for the Hawks, who had lost two straight.

Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 13 points for the Wizards and Otto Porter Jr. had 10.

                  PISTONS 113, MAVERICKS 106, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Reggie Jackson scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and overtime and Detroit beat Dallas.

Andre Drummond added 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons, who had six scorers in double figures.

Johnathan Motley led the Mavericks with career highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds.

Detroit led 101-98 with a minute left in regulation, but Dallas coach Rick Carlisle kept starters Harrison Barnes, Dwight Powell and Dennis Smith Jr. on the bench.

Luke Kennard missed a clinching 3-pointer, and after Dallas turned the ball over, Jackson missed a shot that would have made it a five-point game with 30 seconds left.

Motley tied the score with a 3 with 10.1 seconds left, and Jackson's buzzer-beater bounced off the front rim.

Detroit moved ahead 110-105 with 1:29 in overtime, and after a Dallas offensive foul, Jackson's floater sealed the victory.

                  KINGS 94, GRIZZLIES 93

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Bogdan Bogdanovic connected on a 16-footer with a second left to help Sacramento escape with a victory over Memphis.

Bogdanovic's jumper capped a close game between two teams near the bottom of the Western Conference standings - a game that saw four lead changes in the final minute.

Willie Cauley-Stein led the Kings with 18 points, Buddy Hield finished with 14, and De'Aaron Fox and Justin Jackson each scored 13.

MarShon Brooks led Memphis with 23 points, while Dillon Brooks added 16, including a 3-pointer with 6.4 seconds left to give Memphis a 93-92 lead.

After Bogdanovic answered with his jumper, he blocked the inbounds pass on Memphis' final possession, sending the Grizzlies to their fourth straight loss.

                  KNICKS 122, HEAT 98

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Damyean Dotson had career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds, reserve Luke Kornet added a career-best 17 points and New York blew out Miami.

Trey Burke scored 17 points and Kyle O'Quinn had 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Knicks snapped a four-game losing streak.

Goran Dragic had 15 points and Hassan Whiteside chipped in 14 in Miami's disappointing effort with the postseason set to tip off next weekend.

                  HORNETS 137, MAGIC 100

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Reserve Malik Monk scored 26 points, Frank Kaminsky added 21 and Charlotte routed outmanned Orlando.

Marvin Williams scored 18 points and Dwight Howard had 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Hornets, who stopped a four-game losing streak. Charlotte led by 24 points two minutes into the second quarter and pushed the advantage to as many as 45 in the second half despite benching all starters for the final period.

D.J. Augustin led Orlando with 19 points and Marreese Speights had 14 for the Magic, who prominently featured four players off their G League roster in the game. Three of them, Khem Birch, Jamel Artis and Rodney Purvis, each had 12 points.

A look at what's happening all around baseball Saturday:

                        WELCOME TO THE SHO

Shohei Ohtani could aim to hit a home run in his fourth straight game, if he's in the lineup when the Los Angeles Angels host Oakland. The two-way star from Japan is scheduled to make his second major league start on Sunday vs. the Athletics - he pitched against them last weekend and earned a win.

Ohtani homered again Friday night, launching a shot estimated at nearly 450 feet. The 23-year-old connected his first time up, batting eighth as the designated hitter.

                        BUNDLE UP

In a season already full of frigid weather, the gametime temperature at Target Field was supposed to be around 26 degrees when Minnesota hosted Seattle. And the forecast called for snow on Sunday.

The coldest record temperature for the first pitch of a major league game was 23 degrees in 2013 when Atlanta played at Colorado. Those same teams met Friday at Coors Field and, after a one-hour delay because of snow and sleet, it was 27 degrees at the start.

Ozzie Albies, who's from Curacao, homered for Atlanta in an 8-3 win.

''It was my first time seeing snow. I was excited,'' he said. ''I was acting like a little kid out there. I put the barrel on the ball. That was awesome.''

                        CHECK HIM

The injury-plagued Yankees will see how CC Sabathia is feeling, a day after he was pulled from a start because of soreness in his right hip. The big lefty was taken out after 58 pitches and four innings against Baltimore. The 37-year-old Sabathia had surgery on his right knee after the 2016 season and still wears a brace.

                        BACK TO WORK

The Nationals have lost three in a row, including losses by aces Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg, and have been outscored by a combined 28-9 during the slide. Gio Gonzalez and the NL East champs will try to break the skid when they host Steven Matz and the Mets.

Washington, which opened 4-0, was off Friday. That was fine by rookie manager Dave Martinez.

''Last three games, not so good. First four games, really good,'' Martinez said. ''They get a day off, they get refreshed, and then there's a whole lot more baseball left.''

                        NAP TIME

Mike Napoli hit a grand slam in his first game of the season, playing for Triple-A Columbus on Friday. At 36, the slugger rejoined Cleveland in spring training, signing as a free agent. The Indians like his positive influence on the Indians' young players and, maybe, might provide a power bat in the majors later this year.
