      • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the major league regular season RBI title (William Hill sports):

        3-1— Nolan Arenado

        9-2— Mike Trout

        7-1— Anthony Rizzo

        8-1— Miguel Cabrera

        10-1— Josh Donaldson

        12-1- Mookie Betts

        **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

        13) Jim Boeheim is like a spoiled, entitled child; his Syracuse team plays in the ACC, thats the ATLANTIC COAST Conference, the conference of Dean Smith, Coach K, Michael Jordan and David Thompson. In other words, the heart of the league is North Carolina.

Boeheim insists the ACC tournament should be played in Brooklyn, Washington and Atlanta but never Greensboro. Why? Because it doesn’t suit his purpose. Maybe he should’ve taken that up with his school president and AD before they sold him down the river and joined the ACC to help their floundering football program.

        12) Michigan basketball team’s airplane skidded off the runway while trying to take off to go to the Big 14 tournament Wednesday and wound up getting a little damaged; thankfully no one was injured. Wolverines had to make alternative travel plans to get to Washington.

Then again, if the tournament is in Indianapolis, a more logical location for a midwestern league, then Michigan takes a bus to the tournament and this doesn’t happen.

        11) Was watching a baseball game from Korea the other night; the seats in the lower field boxes all come with a glove and a batting helmet, with a written recommendation that they should be used by fans sitting there, for their own safety.

        10) Netherlands has a pitcher in the World Baseball Classic who is 7-foot-1. Wow.

        9) NBA Draft gurus have Duke’s Harry Giles listed as a top 20 prospect; the young man has played 20+ minutes in one game this season, in early January against Boston College. He has had two major knee operations already. Don’t see how he is a legit top 20 NBA draft pick.

        8) There is a junior college in Missouri called State Fair CC; if I had gone to that academic institution, no doubt the first course I would’ve signed up for: Whack-a-Mole. The key to being good at Whack-a-Mole: keep the mallet low. Very important.

Do they serve corn dogs and cotton candy in the cafeteria?

        7) Saw an old ESPN feature the other day, from 2012 or so, about the baseball coach at Wake Forest who donated one of his kidneys to a player on his team who needed a kidney in order to keep living. Amazing story. Hard to watch that and not tear up.

        6) Of the 30 current general managers in the major leagues, eight of them worked for Atlanta GM John Hart at one time or another.

        5) Mt St Mary’s won the NEC championship; they went 2-11 in their pre-conference schedule, so they could easily be headed to Dayton for a play-in game next week.

        4) Missouri State was going to fire basketball coach Paul Lusk, who is 88-106 in six years coaching the Bears, 45-63 in MVC games, but Lusk has one year left on his contract and the school apparently can’t afford the payout, so Lusk gets to coach next season. If he doesn’t make the NCAA’s, then they’ll tell him to take a hike. That should help their recruiting a lot.

        3) Rick Barry is 70 years old and makes foul shots blindfolded in a TV commercial, but guys in the NBA who are lucky to make half their free throws won’t try underhanded, because it doesn’t look cool enough. Getting paid $20M a year and shooting 45% at the line is embarrassing.

        2) Career playoff won-loss record: Tony Romo: 2-4. Mark Sanchez: 4-2.

1— Thursday might be the best college basketball day of the year; 14 solid hours of games, just a ton of excellent action. This is not a great week for sleeping, but thats what April is for.

                • Inside the Paint - Thursday
                  March 9, 2017

Game of the Night – Spurs at Thunder (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)

Despite resting its two best players, San Antonio (50-13 straight up, 34-29 against the spread) won its ninth straight game on Wednesday as it rallied past Sacramento for a 114-104 victory. Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge were provided the break and the rest of the team stepped by outscoring the Kings 66-41 in the second-half.

Falling behind early cost the Spurs (-11 ½) the cover and that’s been a common theme surrounding the team lately. The club has failed to cash tickets in five straight games and is just 3-6 ATS during the current winning streak.

On Thursday, San Antonio (-3) is laying an easier number to cash and it will be facing an Oklahoma City (35-29 SU, 34-29-1 ATS) team that’s mired in a serious funk. The Thunder have dropped four in a row, both SU and ATS. They’ve allowed 115.5 points per game during this skid and they’ve only held one team under 100 since the All-Star break and that effort came against the limited Los Angeles Lakers.

Even though the Spurs played last night, San Antonio has been very sound on no rest this season, going 10-1 SU and 8-3 ATS. They haven’t covered the last two in these spots but what’s impressive is that nine of the wins have come on the road.

Oklahoma City has been installed as a home underdog five times this season and it’s gone 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS. The defense was again an issue in those contests (110 PPG) and that helped the ‘over’ go 4-1.

San Antonio owns the best road mark (27-7 SU, 20-14 ATS) in the league and it’s been favored in 28 of those games. When laying chalk away from home, the Spurs are 23-5 SU and 15-12-1 ATS.

These teams have only met once this season and San Antonio captured a 108-94 win on Jan. 31 as a 9 ½-point home favorite. If the NBA playoffs started today, these teams would meet in the first round.

Along with this game, we have four other games slated for Thursday and below is my quick handicap.

Cleveland (42-20 SU, 28-32-2 ATS) at Detroit (31-33 SU, 31-33 ATS)

The Cavs and Pistons split their first two meetings this season but Detroit’s win (106-91) on Dec. 26 occurred with LeBron James sitting out for Cleveland. When he did play, Cleveland routed Detroit 104-81 as an 8 ½-point home favorite. The ‘under’ cashed in both games and is on a 4-0-1 run in this series.

Cleveland (-4.5) has gone 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS since the All-Star break and they just got swept in a home-and-home series versus Miami. The offense has been held under 100 in all four setbacks but could get a boost Thursday if shooting guard J.R. Smith returns to the lineup. He’s listed as ‘questionable.’

Detroit has gone 4-3 both SU and ATS since the break, which includes a 115-98 loss at Indiana last night. The point-spread hasn’t matter in any of the games during this span and all three losses came when the Pistons were listed as underdogs.

The Pistons have been a great team to fade on no rest this season (2-9 SU, 2-9 ATS) and they enter this matchup with six consecutive losses on no rest. For whatever reason, the club hasn’t been able to score in these spots (91.9 PPG) and that’s help produced a 9-2 ‘under’ mark.

                  L.A. Clippers (38-26 SU, 32-32 ATS) at Memphis (36-28 SU, 32-32 ATS)

This is a very tough game to handicap for a variety of reasons and I’d personally stay away from both teams just based on their form and the scheduling. The Grizzlies are listed as short home favorites (-3) and enter this game with three consecutive losses both SU and ATS. On Sunday, the club was embarrassed 122-109 at home to the Nets as 10 ½-point favorites. The ‘over’ cashed in that game and is on a 4-0 run for the Grizzlies.

Coincidentally, Los Angeles was humbled last night in a 107-91 loss at Minnesota and now will be playing its third game in four nights at Memphis on Thursday. Prior to beating the Bulls 101-91 last Saturday at the United Center, the Clippers had dropped seven straight games when playing on no rest. Overall, L.A. has gone 6-7 SU and 5-8 ATS in back-to-back spots this season.

These teams have met twice this season and they split the pair with both games taking place from the Staples Center. The ‘over’ cashed in each contests and the Clippers are averaging 107.8 PPG in their last four versus the Grizzlies.

Philadelphia (23-40 SU, 38-25 ATS) at Portland (27-35 SU, 26-36 ATS)

This will be the first of four straight games versus the Western Conference for Philadelphia and oddsmakers have opened them as a 10-point road underdog to Portland in this game.

The 76ers gave loyal fans a glimmer of hope this season and they’ve been very competitive but this could be a good time to hop off the “Philly Express.” The club has gone 1-4 in its last five games and all of those losses came by double digits. The backcourt is starting to get exposed defensively especially without Joel Embiid in the middle anymore.

Portland has won and covered three straight and the offense is clicking right now, scoring 114, 130 and 126 during this span. The Trail Blazers are in a real fight to make the playoffs and they can place blame on their poor record versus the East (9-15) especially at home (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS). Philadelphia has gone 7-17 against the West, which includes a 2-8 (5-5 ATS) mark on the road. The ‘under’ has gone 7-3 in those games.

Despite being healthy underdogs in this matchup, bettors might lean to the 76ers based on recent meetings. Philadelphia nipped Portland 93-92 on Jan. 20 as a 2 ½-point home underdog and has gone 5-1 ATS in the last six encounters while winning three of those games. The ‘under’ has gone 4-2 during this span and that includes a run of three straight to the low side.

                  L.A. Lakers (19-45 SU, 27-35-2 ATS) at Phoenix (21-43 SU, 33-29-2 ATS)

It’s rare to see Phoenix (-6 ½) lay this healthy of a price but it’s justifiable against Los Angeles, who has dropped eight straight games (0-7-1 ATS) and one of those defeats came to Phoenix. In that contest, the Suns hammered the Lakers 137-101 on Feb. 15 as 4 ½-point home favorites.

Since that win, Phoenix has gone 3-4 but it’s managed to cover five of those games. Some bettors might be hesitant to lay the points in this spot and it’s understandable knowing that the Suns are just 3-7 both SU and ATS when listed as a ‘chalk’ this season.

Defense could be another reason to back off Phoenix, who is ranked 29th in scoring at 112.8 PPG. Even though the Suns have gone 2-1 versus the Lakers, they did drop a 119-108 decision earlier in the season on Nov. 6 at the Staples Center. The ‘over’ has gone 3-0 between the pair this season and is on an 8-2 run in this series. To no surprise, this matchup has the largest total (230) listed on Thursday’s board.

The odds on this game dropped this morning due to the uncertain status of Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe (knee).

                            • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                              — QB Mike Glennon gets $15M a year from the Bears; he has a 5-13 record as a starter with the Bucs, before Jameis Winston got there. That means Chicago will release Jay Cutler.

                              — Texans traded QB Brock Osweiler and two draft picks to Cleveland for a 4th-round pick, saving Houston $7M on the 2017 salary cap. Now the Texans need another QB.

                              — Kirk Cousins requested a trade from the Redskins. who appear to be dysfunctional. Interweb said owner Daniel Snyder turned down Cousins’ request.

                              — Eagles signed WR’s Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith to help young QB Carson Wentz.

                              — Former Eagle/Redskin WR DeSean Jackson signed with the Buccaneers.

                              — Browns gave Kenny Britt $32M for four years; I have to laugh. Grabbing WR’s the Rams don’t want is no way to build a ballclub

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up the best hoop day of the year…….

Thursday of Champ Week is the best college basketball day of the year. Here is my brief recap: my apologies for any typos, I’m too tired to proofread this.

                              13) Duke 81, Louisville 77— Cardinals were 15-26 on foul line, 4-21 on arc. Strong matchup for the quarterfinals; now Blue Devils play North Carolina tomorrow night- this is only second meeting for those rivals in last 13 ACC tournaments (Duke won last one).

                              12) TCU 85, Kansas 82— Jayhawks’ star Josh Jackson was suspended for this game, now the Horned Frogs move on to the Big 12 semifinals for the first time. Moral of the story; No matter what she did to tick you off, don’t back your vehicle into her car, at least not during the season.

                              11) Iowa State 92, Oklahoma State 83— Cowboys lost last three games, two to ISU and one to Kansas, but still, three losses are three losses. OSU was 0-3 against the Cyclones this season; they’ll be happy to play teams from outside the Big X next week.

                              10) Michigan 75, Illinois 55— Wolverines couldn’t wear their uniforms, because everything that was on their airplane Wednesday was held by the FAA due to the investigation into what caused the accident with the airplane. So, Michigan wore their practice gear- they also flew in from Detroit Thursday morning and went right from the airport to the arena.

                              9) Northwestern 83, Rutgers 61— I’m confused as to how good the Wildcats actually are; they’re going to be in the Field of 68, so I need to figure it out soon. Will they relax and play better once they hear their name called on Selection Sunday?

Wildcats had a 31-0 run in this game. Don’t see many of those.

                              8) San Diego State 87, Boise State 68— Aztecs looked 98% disinterested Wednesday in their OT win against UNLV; they looked like a different set of people in this game. They play in the Mountain West semifinals tonite against Colorado State. Should be a good ballgame.

                              7) Xavier 62, Butler 57— Bulldogs are now 0-4 in Big East tournament; long trip from Indy to New York City. Big win for the Musketeers, who have now won three games in a row.

Big East semifinals: Villanova-Seton Hall and Xavier-Creighton.

                              6) Texas-El Paso 86, Rice 76— Miners wore Texas Western throwback jerseys in this game. A few years ago, they made the movie Glory Road about the Miners’ 1966 NCAA title.

                              5) Marshall 64, Old Dominion 63— Mike D’Antoni’s brother Dan coaches the Thundering Herd; they like to run, just like his brother’s Houston Rockets, but ODU kept this game in the low 60’s before Marshall pulled it out with a free throw with 0:03 left.

                              4) Kansas State 70, Baylor 64— Wildcats et to 20-12, which could be bad news for mid-major bubble teams like Illinois State. Wildcats won two out of three games from Baylor, which is 5-6 in its last 11 games after a 20-1 start.

Big X semifinals: Iowa State-TCU and West Virginia-Kansas State.

                              3) Big West semifinals: Cal-Davis plays Cal State Fullerton, then Cal-Irvine plays Long Beach State. Irvine is the best of the four teams but they’re a very young team.

                              2) Fresno State 65, New Mexico 60— Last year, Bulldogs won their last five regular season games, then won the Mountain West tournament. This season Fresno won its last five regular season games and is now in the MW semis tonight. Rodney Terry is doing good work in Fresno.

1— Duke-Carolina and Arizona-UCLA highlight the great card of games Friday night.
