Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

    13) Pretty soon the college basketball coaching carousel will start spinning, which begs the question: is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a smaller fish in a big pond?

Shaka Smart bolted VCU for Texas and more $$$, but now he is 30-32 in two years, 15-19 in conference games and Longhorn fans are wondering why Rick Barnes got fired.

Guys like Gregg Marshall (Wichita St), Eric Musselman (Nevada) and Archie Miller (Dayton) are winning big in smaller leagues and will surely get offers from schools like NC State, Missouri, Illinois or whatever other jobs open up, but they all make a lot of money now.

Is it worth it to coach in deeper waters for more money, when it is harder to win there?

    12) Watching Gonzaga lose at home to BYU late Saturday night, it occurs to you that they haven’t been tested enough by the lame WCC, which was way down this year, other than St Mary’s—even BYU is very young and isn’t as good as usual.

Gonzaga’s guards looked lost in the last few minutes, when the game was tight and a loss seemed possible. Zags hadn’t played a single-digit game since Dec 3, when they won by 7 over Arizona in Los Angeles. 84 days between close games isn’t that healthy for a team.

    11) San Antonio Spurs have had 20 consecutive seasons with a winning road record; that is really a great accomplishment.

    10) Arizona State 83, USC 82— ASU played starters 199 out of 200 minutes in their loss to UCLA Thursday; I’ve never seen that before. In this game, they played two subs, one 11:00, another 12:00, but they pulled out a win and improved to 7-10 in the Pac-12.

    9) Big West Conference is way down this year, but three of their four games Saturday went to overtime, and the fourth game ended 83-80, so solid night of entertainment in that league.

    8) Champ Week starts tonight, with four first-round games in the Atlantic Sun tourney at campus sites. Florida Gulf Coast is the #1 seed, Lipscomb the #2 seed.

Ohio Valley tournament will be next, starting on Wednesday.

    7) A U of Louisville sophomore thought he won $38,000 at a women’s basketball game Thursday by hitting a layup, foul shot, 3-pointer and half-court shot during a time-out, but he has been told he is ineligible to receive the prize because he played high school ball and the fine print of the contest says no one can collect if they played organized basketball within the last six years. Too bad- the sponsor would win back the $38K in goodwill if they gave the kid the $$$.

    6) San Diego State had a great running back this season, Donnel Pumphrey; the school honored the young man during a timeout in the Aztecs’ basketball game Wednesday, but there was one small problem.

Mr Pumphrey showed up wearing a Dodgers’ hat.

People in San Diego don’t like Los Angeles, and since the Chargers just bolted to LA, that feeling has ramped up a little bit, so Mr Pumphrey took some grief on social media for the hat. Took until the second half for someone at the arena to get him a red Aztecs’ cap.

    5) I’m a big fan of college basketball adopting the 8-second half-court rule; would encourage teams to press more and also to run the ball up the floor, instead of walking it up.

    4) Do you think Jack Nicklaus sits at home and quietly celebrates because Eldrick Woods’ career is in the dumper, which preserves Nicklaus’ record for most majors won?

    3) Toughing moment at Michigan State Sunday; senior Eron Harris blew his knee out earlier this year- his career is over, but he suited up for his last home game Sunday and with 0:11 left and the Spartans safely ahead, Harris checked into the game to get one last ovation.

He knelt down, which wasn’t easy with the big knee brace he had on, and kissed the Spartan logo at midcourt. I’m not sure the average fan realizes how much effort these kids put into their playing careers and how much it means to them. It was a pretty cool moment.

    2) I was trying to explain to a young person the other day what basketball was like before the shot clock; in short, it wasn’t as fun. Coaches could dominate the game; the game could have almost no flow at all. The shot clock and 3-point shot have made basketball a way better game.

Example: February 22, 1980— While the US Olympic hockey team was beating the Russians in the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, my college team was playing in the semifinals of their conference tournament, in Buffalo. People in the corner of the small gym were watching the hockey game on Canadian TV in the corner of the gym.

We lost the game that night in four overtimes; the team that won the tip of all four 5:00 OT’s held the ball for the last shot. I’m not kidding, it was that boring— tense is a better word.

In 1979, a North Carolina-Duke basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. Seriously.

1— Watching college hoop games this weekend, one thing is clear; people are tired. Season is a long one; players, coaches, and maybe most of all the officials are tired. Getting to Champ Week gives everyone a little jolt of energy.

            • NBA betting road map: Miami remains the NBA's hottest bet

Miami was 11-30 through its first 41 games (19-22 ATS) but over their last 18 games the Heat have won and covered 16 - with an average pointspread differential of +9.44.

The NBA's trade deadline is in the rear view mirror, and the only blockbuster trade was an unexpected one. The New Orleans Pelicans acquired DeMarcus Cousins from the Sacramento Kings for a mix of uninspiring players and draft picks. Meanwhile, the one team many expected to make a move, the Boston Celtics, stood pat as GM Danny Ainge was unable to find an offer compelling enough to part with any of his highly-valued draft picks.

The next three days will see some additional player movement as those players who are bought out will be free to sign with another team and be eligible for the playoffs. The clear winners of the trade deadline were the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as no team emerged as a bigger threat to supplant either from its perch at the top of their respective conferences.

Let's take a look at the upcoming week in the NBA.

              Spread Watch

Has there ever been a turnaround by a more unlikely team than what is happening right now with Miami? (Hint: the answer is 'no.')

Miami was 11-30 through its first 41 games (19-22 ATS), and nobody thought Erik Spoelstra's team was greatly underachieving, but over their last 18 games the Heat have won and covered 16 - with an average pointspread differential of +9.44. When Miami was in the midst of its 13-game SU/ATS win streak, the criticism was that its slate of opponents was not overly difficult (notwithstanding its upset of the best team in history, Golden State). It's true that just three of those 13 opponents had winning records (although eight had better records than the Heat), but check out the three teams Miami has just defeated on its current three-game SU/ATS win streak: Houston, Atlanta and Indiana. All three are above .500, and the Heat covered the spread by double-digits in each of those games - by an average of 17.3 points.

This week the Heat's schedule will be decidedly easier as they kick it off with games against Dallas, Philadelphia and Orlando (all among the worst eight teams in the league) before finishing up with Cleveland. Will Miami's turnaround continue? I wouldn't bet against it - at least not on Monday - as the Heat are 10-1 SU and 8-3 ATS their last 11 versus Dallas.

              Totals Watch

The Memphis Grizzlies, under former coach Dave Joerger, were a defensive-oriented ball-club. One of the reasons for Joerger's hire in Sacramento was that Kings management wanted those principles instilled among their young players.

The results this season are decidedly mixed as Sacramento currently ranks No. 23 in defensive efficiency. But lately, the Kings have been playing very good defense as only two of the Kings' last seven opponents have scored more than 100 points. One of those clubs was Golden State which "only" scored 109 versus Sacramento - nine points below its offensive average.

Not surprisingly, the Kings have gone 'under' the total in six of their last seven games (including the last five in a row). This week, Sacramento will face Minnesota, Brooklyn, Utah and Denver. The game versus the Jazz looks to be the best candidate to go 'under' as Utah has held its last four opponents to 95 points or less (3-1 'under') and the last three meetings between the Jazz and Kings have been relatively low-scoring affairs.

              Injury Watch

Chris Paul was back on the court this past Friday versus the Spurs after missing his team's previous 14 games as he recovered from left thumb surgery. The Clippers went 6-8 SU and 8-6 ATS in those 14 games, so his return was seen as the catalyst to pushing the Clips back up in the Western Conference standings.

Unfortunately, Los Angeles lost 105-97 to the Spurs, but did bounce back with a hard-fought three-point overtime win versus Charlotte (although they failed to cover the spread in both games).

For the season, Los Angeles is 28-10 SU and 19-19 ATS with Paul in the lineup, and that .736 win percentage would have placed L.A. in third place in the Western Conference if it had been able to maintain their play in the games without Paul. Their chances of catching the Rockets for the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference are growing increasingly slim as Houston is five games up in the loss column.

This week the Clips will have a great opportunity to close that gap as they'll host the Rockets on Wednesday before traveling to the midwest to play road games at Milwaukee and Chicago. The Clippers should rout Houston, as Los Angeles will be playing with revenge from a 140-116 loss at Houston earlier this season and .585 (or better) teams are 79-25 SU and 64-38-2 ATS since 1992 as home favorites in the regular season if they're playing with revenge from a 24-point (or worse) defeat.

              Schedule Watch

After a 22-8 start to the season, in which Toronto outscored its opponents by 9.0 points per game, Dwane Casey's men stumbled greatly. Toronto lost 16 of its next 26 games so management decided to make some changes.

The first was a Valentine's Day trade with the Orlando Magic to acquire Serge Ibaka. Then, this past Thursday, GM Masai Ujiri dealt Jared Sullinger and a couple of 2nd round draft picks to Phoenix for P.J. Tucker. The addition of Ibaka and Tucker greatly improves Toronto's defense. Ibaka is a great rim protector while Tucker is a tough-minded, versatile defender.

Since bringing in Ibaka, the Raptors have gone 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS and have held their opponents to just 96 ppg - more than 10 points below the offensive average of those three teams.

This week, Toronto will travel to Madison Square Garden to play the Knicks on Monday, before a home-and-home series with the Washington Wizards on Wednesday and Friday. The Wizards are currently the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference so these two games are among the biggest games left on Toronto's schedule. The Raptors have won all five of the meetings between these two clubs the past two seasons.

Look for Toronto to extend its win streak vs. the Wizards to six games, as Toronto will have a scheduling advantage on Wednesday. The Wizards will be playing without rest, while the Raptors will be rested. The Raptors are 89-62 SU and 81-65-3 ATS at home when rested against an unrested foe.

              • Monday's NBA Essentials
                February 27, 2017

Game of the Night - Indiana at Houston (TNT, 9:30 ET)

Although DeMarcus Cousins' drama and Boston's "will they or won't they" act starred at this year's trade deadline, the Pacers and Rockets got in strong supporting roles.

Paul George didn't appreciate that his market value was being gauged, but ultimately wasn't moved to Boston or his preference, L.A. Larry Bird didn't get him any help either, holding firm with the team he's assembled.

There were nothing but rainbows and lollipops on Houston's end, since it was able to pluck Lou Williams from the Lakers for a late first-round pick and Corey Brewer, adding to its offensive arsenal. Teams called about Patrick Beverley's availability, but he stayed put to play the pitbull role that works so well on a team where so many others are looking to score while he seeks out the dirty work.

The Rockets have averaged 135.5 points over their first two wins coming out of the All-Star break, defeating New Orleans and Minnesota. The schedule intensifies to open March with games against four of the West's top six, followed by a trip to Chicago and the Cavs making their lone venture into town. There are no back-to-backs in the mix, so we'll get a great read on how seriously to take Houston's championship aspirations over the next two weeks.

Head coach Mike D'Antoni has thumped his chest and declared more offense is sure to come as he revels in a system that GM Daryl Morey has helped facilitate. It's a different take on his seven-seconds-or-less days in Phoenix. In the present, James Harden is in the Steve Nash role of catalyst, but the 3-pointer has replaced even bothering with alley-oops to Amar'e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion. Why settle for the two when Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson, Trevor Ariza and now Williams can spot up and drop one in for the extra point?

The Rockets made 22 3-pointers on Saturday night against Minnesota, breaking the mark Golden State set last season with their eighth game of 20 or more makes from beyond the arc in '16-'17. The plan is to put this record completely out of reach.

According to the Houston Chronicle, D'Antoni's instructions to Williams upon his arrival were to "only shoot when you touch it."

Houston christened the Cousins-Anthony Davis marriage in New Orleans by reminding everyone that bigs don't impact the game as much when you stay out of the paint, attempting 51 3-pointers. Afterward, the Rockets head coach hinted we'd better get used to seeing such a high volume of 3-point attempts fired up from this group the rest of the way. Williams matched a season-high with seven makes, immersing himself into the culture immediately.

"It's easy to play with these guys," Williams told reporters. "It's a very open style. Everybody eats. Everybody's happy. It fits my style."

Against Minnesota on Saturday, the Rockets fired up 44 3-pointers through three quarters and ended up with 58 attempts despite the fact they were trying to close out a game they led by 18 entering the fourth. Six Rockets put up at least seven 3-pointers. Their 142 points were a season-high, collected exclusively from the deep perimeter, the lane or the free-throw line. The total has been set around 230 for their last two games and is again in that neighborhood tonight.

Beverley played 29 minutes against the Wolves despite originally being scratched due to a groin injury, so his availability for tonight could be in question. He also got into it with Ricky Rubio, shoving Minnesota's point guard at one point in an incident that has yet to be ruled on by the league. The Pacers have backup forward Al Jefferson questionable with a dental issue and are coming off an 18-point loss in Miami that marked their seventh defeat in eight games. They were held to a 16-point fourth quarter and managed just 95 points against the Heat, their second-lowest output in a game in 2017. George was ejected for getting separate technical fouls early in the third quarter and comes into this one frustrated as his team makes the second stop on a five-game road trip.

Indiana is surrendering an NBA-worst 118.7 points per 100 possessions during its skid and will be looking to find its way against an attack that currently looks to be the league's most potent. The Pacers did win the first matchup in Indianapolis 120-101 on Jan. 29 in a game where George scored 33 and the team's bench dominated, shooting 18-for-27. Harden was held to 3-for-17 shooting, so expect him to be motivated here. The under has connected in four consecutive Pacers games.

                Ex-Kentucky bigs are everywhere

It's hard to get away from Cousins these days. Not only is this Pelicans experiment of combining him with Anthony Davis among the most riveting story lines in the league, Cousins kept his name in the news by being unjustly whistled for an 18th technical foul in Oklahoma City that may keep him out of New Orleans' next game if not rescinded. His former team will be playing for the third time since shipping him out of town, welcoming in Minnesota.

The Kings lost to Charlotte on Saturday afternoon, tempering some of the excitement after they trounced Denver in the post-Boogie era opener. Most disappointing was Willie Cauley-Stein following up a 29-point, 10-rebound explosion with 2 points and 2 boards against the Hornets. He missed all five of his shots and was a non-factor. Thus far, he's been a bust over his career, especially when compared to his college teammate Karl-Anthony Towns, who started next to him up front on that 2014-15 Kentucky team that opened 38-0 before losing in the national semifinals.

Cauley-Stein went sixth after Towns was selected first in the 2015 Draft and is still looking for an opportunity to make a major impact, averaging just 7 points and 5 rebounds last year while Towns logged a double-double and won Rookie of the Year. This season, Towns is averaging 24 points and 12 boards, while Cauley-Stein found himself benched from the rotation at one point. In two games against Towns this season, he's averaged eight minutes of action. Sacramento won both games with Cousins outplaying Towns, but this will be Cauley-Stein's show when he comes in to spell starter Kosta Koufos.

Minnesota swept all four encounters when Towns and Cauley-Stein were rookies. They saw the most of one another in the final meeting as Cousins rested, starting against one another. Cauley-Stein hung tough, scoring 15 points in 33 minutes despite foul trouble, grabbing six boards. Towns posted 17 and 10, his 50th double-double as a rookie. For his career, Cauley-Stein has four, the most recent of which heightened hopes that he'll be able to flourish now that he's out of Cousins' shadow. Tonight is a big night for him, especially since team president Vlade Divac promised to step down if the team is not better off in two years for moving the face of their franchise in a move panned by most due to how little they got in return.

Sacramento is just one game behind Denver for the eighth and final playoff spot, while Minnesota is just three games behind. The Timberwolves are in the midst of a four-game road swing an are actually favored here, making this a must-win consiering they will visit the Jazz and Spurs next. Minnesota is 3-5 SU as a road favorite this season and has seen the over prevail in 11 of their last 14 games. Sacramento is on a five-game under run and has come in below the posted total in nine of their last 11.

                Injury Concerns

Kristaps Porzingis is doubtful to play in tonight's home game against the Raptors. He left injured in Thursday's loss to Cleveland and didn't play as the Knicks survived Philadelphia on Saturday on a Carmelo Anthony winner. Joakim Noah was also absent in that game and is dealing with a hamstring issue. If those guys can't go, Kyle O'Quinn and Willy Hernangomez would start for New York. The Raptors continue to be without Kyle Lowry, who is out indefinitely with a wrist injury. Cory Joseph has averaged 13.5 points and six assists in lifting the Raptors to home wins over Boston and Portland while filling in.

LeBron James is dealing with a case of strep throat, so there's a high probability he'll use this illness as a chance to rest up for the playoffs. He's questionable against the Bucks tonight. Cleveland is 4-19 without James in the lineup since he returned to town in '15, losing all four times he's been absent this season.

Avery Bradley could return to the Celtics lineup against Atlanta after an 18-game absence. An Achilles injury has kept him out of 22 of the last 23 games, limiting him to only three appearances in 2017. Bradley was the subject of trade talk as a highly valuable two-way guard, but has been replaced nicely by Marcus Smart, who has really stepped up to fill the void as the strong defender required next to Isaiah Thomas. This will be Boston's third game in four nights, so they could use his fresh legs against the Hawks, who are an underdog against Boston for just the second time in their last nine matchups.

Golden State's Kevin Durant has been upgraded to probable after missing Saturday's game against Brooklyn with a hand injury. The 76ers won't have Joel Embiid for Philadelphia's only home game against the Warriors this season.

                Head-to-head trends

-- The Warriors have won six straight in the series with the 76ers, last losing in Philadelphia in 2013. The 73-win team failed to cover in either one of their victories against last year's group, winning just 108-105 in Philly despite entering that game as a 17-point favorite. The last 10 games in the series have all gone under the posted total.

-- Since losing the 2011 NBA Finals, the Heat have beaten the Mavericks in 10 of 11 games, only losing at home in 2015 in a game where they managed just 72 points. They've dominated otherwise, winning each of the five games in Dallas. The under has connected in four straight. Before squaring off for the championship, the Mavs had actually won 14 consecutive games against the Heat. Miami has won 16 of the last 18 games, pulling within one game of Detroit for the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference entering Monday's action.

                  Monday NBA Betting Preview
                  Indiana Pacers vs. Houston Rockets

Sportsbook.ag Odds: Houston (-10.5); Total set at 231

TNT is the leading broadcaster in the NBA with their Thursday night double-headers, but now they've pushed things over to Monday nights to try and expand their brand to another day of the week. These “Players Only” broadcasts should add another interesting flavor to TNT's NBA coverage and it begins with tonight's Pacers/Rockets game as the backend of a double-header.

As far as the actual game goes, this East vs. West matchup is a highly intriguing one as it was the Pacers who laid a beating on Houston about a month ago. Indiana won that game 120-101 as Paul George led the way with 33 points for the Pacers and the entire team shot 54% from the floor. They also held Houston to just 41% shooting from the floor and when the leading MVP candidate James Harden was a -23, had eight turnovers and just 15 points, chances are Houston's going to be in for a rough night.

However, things have changed drastically for both sides since then as Houston's bolstered their playoff bound roster to make a deep run, while Indiana spend the trade deadline dealing with enquiries about Paul George and appear to be in “tank mode” at the moment.

The Pacers enter tonight having dropped seven of their past eight games and posting a 3-5 ATS record during that stretch. They were blown out in Miami a few days ago on the latter half of a back-to-back to start this road trip and the rest of the trip doesn't get any easier.

It's Houston tonight, San Antonio on Wednesday, before going to Atlanta and Charlotte on Sunday/Monday to wrap things up. If the Pacers are entering “tank mode” you'll really get the picture from how they play over this next week. Other than George, and a sometimes-streaky Monta Ellis, the Pacers don't have the firepower to keep up with Houston in Houston if the Rockets are on top of their game. With a 7-2 SU record since that loss to Indiana, there aren't many reasons to believe the Rockets aren't on top of their game right now.

While Houston's defensive tendencies could still use some work, that's not their M.O and everyone knows it. The Rockets are build to run up the scoreboard on layups and 3-point shots and they've used that methodology to sit 3rd place in the West. The offense has come out of the All-Star break on fire, pouring in 129 and 142 points in their two wins as the addition of Lou Williams off the bench has made them an even deeper scoring machine.

Even at -10.5 points, this spread appears to be a touch low for the Rockets given the situation and how well they are going at the moment. Obviously a big number like this could always leave the “back door cover” available to Indiana backers late in the game, but it might not even be close enough for that to become a factor.

The Rockets would love to put a similar style of beating on the Pacers in the return match and with the fragile mentality of Indiana's organization right now in terms of what their next step may be, they might not care at all to fight not to get blown out. Indiana is 2-5 ATS in their last seven on the road against a team that's won 60% of their games this year and is on a 1-4 ATS run when their opponent has the same winning percentage at home.

                    • Noah expected to miss rest of season
                      February 27, 2017

New York Knicks center Joakim Noah will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and miss the remainder of the season, according to multiple reports Monday.

Noah, 32, will undergo the procedure on his left knee Monday, Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported. The surgery is expected to be a "clean up" of the left knee, league sources told Wojnarowski.

Noah is in the first year of a four-year, $72 million free agent contract he signed in July after playing nine seasons with the Chicago Bulls, who drafted him ninth overall in 2007.

The 6-foot-11, 230-pound Noah has missed the last seven games while dealing with a lingering hamstring injury. He hasn't played since a Feb. 4 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, when he had four points and two rebounds in just six minutes.

Noah underwent arthroscopic surgery on the same knee in May 2014, but Monday's procedure is due to a new injury, according to ESPN.

Noah is averaging 5.0 points and 8.7 rebounds in 46 games this season. For his career, he owns averages of 9.0 points and 9.4 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Knicks announced Monday the signing of free agent guard Chasson Randle to a contract. The team also waived guard Brandon Jennings.

The 6-2, 185-pound Randle, 24, appeared in eight games for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, averaging 5.3 points over 9.3 minutes, before being waived on Feb. 23.

Jennings, 27, signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Knicks during the offseason to back up Derrick Rose. The 6-1, 170-pound Jennings averaged 8.6 points, 4.9 assists and 24.6 minutes in 58 games.

"Thank you to all the Knicks fans for the love all year long, and thanks to my teammates and the organization," Jennings tweeted.

                      • 76ers: Embiid out indefinitely
                        February 27, 2017

Philadelphia 76ers forward Joel Embiid is out indefinitely with swelling in his injured left knee.

The team announced Embiid didn't practice Monday and is scheduled for more tests. He has missed the last five games.

From the team's official Twitter feed: "Embiid did not take part in shootaround after (swelling) in left knee. MRI today. Listed out indefinitely."

That announcement comes on the heels of general manager Bryan Colangelo declaring 2016 No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons out for the season last week. Simmons had a procedure to promote healing in his injured foot, the 76ers said Monday via Twitter:

"Simmons minor foot procedure to stimulate bone growth, accelerate healing. Likely to resume training by end of week."

Without Embiid and Simmons, and having traded Nerlens Noel to the Dallas Mavericks at the deadline last Thursday, the 76ers are 4-6 in their last 10 games and 22-36 overall.

Shorthanded Cavs gear up for Bucks
                        February 27, 2017

CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers are pretty bad without LeBron James.

But they could be really shorthanded Monday night when they host the Milwaukee Bucks in the finale of a four-game homestand and the last of what's been a great month of games for Cleveland.

James has strep throat. Kyle Korver bruised his knee Saturday night. Kevin Love and J.R. Smith are already out recovering from surgeries.

James missed the morning shootaround and the Cavs listed him as questionable against the Bucks. Korver is also listed as questionable, but he participated in the shootaround and said he expects to play.

And while free agent point guard Deron Williams will sign with the Cavs on Monday, he might not be available for the evening's game against the Bucks.

Enter Kyrie Irving, who's coming off a 34-point game in Cleveland's loss to the Chicago Bulls Saturday night and is averaging a career-high 24.6 points per game this season.

"My mindset doesn't change too much," Irving said, when asked about playing without James. "I understand there's a few extra shots I have to take, but I also have to create a lot more plays for my teammates. ... The start of the game, throughout the game, understanding I'm going to need other guys in position to play at an even higher level, especially when we have a gap like 'Bron not playing. You just take it as that and try to put guys in great position to succeed."

Irving nearly notched a triple-double with a season-high nine rebounds and seven assists in a 117-99 loss to the Bulls. He has scored at least 20 points in his last eight games, and needs one more assist to become the eighth player in team history with 2,000 career assists.

But when James doesn't play -- his status is to be determined, as is Korver's -- Irving's presence makes almost no difference. The Cavs are 4-19 without James since the start of the 2014 season and zero for their last seven. Irving was out for at least a couple of those games, but the point remains the same.

The Bucks, meanwhile, lost forward Jabari Parker for the season Feb. 8 to a torn ACL. They improved to 4-3 without him Sunday by beating the Phoenix Suns 100-96. Giannis Antetokounmpo led all players with 28 points and shot 11 of 13 from the field.

Antetokounmpo and Cleveland's James are two of only five players in the NBA this season to be averaging at least 20 points and shooting better than 50 percent from the field.

Michael Beasley scored 17 points off the bench. Malcolm Brogdon scored 15 points to go with seven assists in a reserve role. Former Cavs' sixth man Matthew Dellavedova struggled mightily, failing to score on 0-of-6 shooting.

Tony Snell (13 points, 3 of 6 3-pointers) and Korver are the NBA's top two 3-point shooters since Jan. 1 -- they are both shooting better than 51 percent.

"Lot of good stuff," Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. "Thought we were growing up, this is a growing up game. We're growing, we're going in the right direction."

Khris Middleton, who made his first start this season and finished with eight points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes, will not travel to Cleveland for the game, Kidd said. Middleton missed the first 50 games this season with a torn left hamstring.

Nets waive veteran forward Luis Scola
                        February 27, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) The Brooklyn Nets have waived veteran forward Luis Scola.

Scola averaged 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds in 36 games this season, falling out of the rotation as the league-worst Nets focused more on their younger players.

General manager Sean Marks said Monday the Nets felt that Scola ''deserved the opportunity to contribute to a playoff contender.'' Because he was waived by the March 1 deadline, Scola would be eligible to sign with another team and appear on its playoff roster.

Scola has averaged 12 points while playing for five teams in his 10 NBA seasons, and won an Olympic gold medal with Argentina in 2004.

                        • Raptors PG Lowry to undergo wrist surgery
                          February 27, 2017

Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry will undergo wrist surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season.

Lowry will undergo a procedure to remove "loose bodies" from his right wrist, the Raptors announced Monday on their Twitter site. The aim, according to the team, is for Lowry to be back by the playoffs.

The team's second-leading scorer, the 6-foot-1 Lowry is averaging a career-high 22.8 points to go along with 6.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds. He also is shooting 46.3 percent overall and a career-best 41.7 percent from 3-point range.

Lowry's last appearance came in the NBA All-Star Game on Feb. 19, when he scored 19 points and knocked down 5 of 9 3-point attempts. He scored at least 20 points in 10 of his last 13 games, including a four-game stretch from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1 where he netted at least 32 in each.

Cory Joseph started in Lowry's place in the past two games -- both wins -- and scored a combined 25 points while doling out six assists in each. Backup Delon Wright contributed 11 points in Sunday's win over Portland.

"Those guys did a good job," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said of Joseph and Wright after Sunday's win. "Not having our queen bee in there and our top guy to hand the ball off to offensively, defensively, 3-point shooting, we miss that part of it."

Lowry is in his 11th season overall and fifth with the Raptors. The former Villanova product was a first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) of the Memphis Grizzlies in 2006.

                            • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                              — Atlantic Sun tourney started Champ Week last night: both top seeds won easily. Only upset was a slight one, #5-seed Kennesaw State won at SC-Upstate.

                              — Virginia 53, North Carolina 43— Tar Heels are an ordinary 5-4 on ACC road.

                              — Baylor’s Jake Lindsey (#3) is the son of Utah Jazz GM Dennis Lindsey.

                              — Texas released PG Tevin Mack, who had been suspended; curious to see where he surfaces. Longhorns are 3-10 since Mack was suspended.

                              — Mississippi State gave football coach Dan Mullen a 4-year extension thru 2021. Guy makes $4.5M a year; I was stunned by that.

                              — 16 Miami Dolphins are in NYC this week, taking part in Miami owner Stephen Ross’ Business Combine that should help players manage and increase their wealth better.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                              13) Can be difficult to evaluate pitchers in spring training; take Sunday, when Daniel Gossett looked good pitching against the Angels. Gossett is a prospect, but……

Normally when you face the Angels, you’ll face Calhoun-Trout-Pujols-Maybin in the first two innings. Sunday, Halos’ #3 hitter was Cliff Pennington, not exactly their “A” lineup, so you have to take Gossett’s performance with a grain of salt.

                              12) I’m a big fan of the Showtime program Billions; turns out that two of the three co-writers on the show also worked together writing Rounders and Oceans 13, two excellent movies.

                              11) With closer Jeurys Familia due to be suspended (domestic violence) at the start of the season, Addison Reed will be the Mets closer on April 3 and for several weeks after.

                              10) Toronto Raptors lose G Kyle Lowry (wrist) for the rest of the regular season; they hope to have him back for the playoffs.

                              9) These stats are from Justin Ray of Golf Channel: Average age of PGA Tour winners this season is 28.7 years old.

From 2000-13, average age of winners on Tour was 33.4 years old. In 2014-15, it was 30.4.

                              8) Reese Maguire is a minor league catcher in the Blue Jays’ system; think catching is in his genes? His dad caught, his grandfather was a catcher for Duke in the College World Series.

                              In 1952.

                              7) Random food fact: I’ve never had Italian ice or a snow cone. Or coffee.

                              6) NFL Combine is this week, so we’ll see lot of 40-yard dashes and agility drills and no one will remind us that Tom Brady had an awful Combine workout and is one of the best QB’s of all time.

Game film means more than workouts, though I’m guessing the interviews teams do with prospects are REALLY helpful. Like the time Geno Smith fiddled with his cellphone during his interviews. Never should’ve been drafted high after that.

                              5) San Diego Padres have used 84 players the last two years. Thats a lot.

Seattle Mariners made 37 roster moves between the end of last season and the start of spring training; GM Jerry DiPoto has totally cleaned house, building a new team around his nucleus of Robinson Cano/Felix Hernandez/Hector Cruz

                              4) Saturday in Las Vegas, an astute gambler played $7 on a 10-team college hoop parlay and it hit, making him $5,040 (720-1 odds). He played four totals and six sides.

                              3) Texas Rangers are 28-10 against the Astros the last two years, with 13 one-run wins. If the Astros can just go 10-9 against Texas this year, thats a 5-game swing in the AL West race.

                              2) Only three big leaguers played 162 games last year: Alcides Escobar, Jonathan Schoop and George Springer.

1— Steelers signed WR Antonio Brown to a $17M a year deal, making him the highest-paid WR in the NFL. Maybe next year he can actually listen to his coach’s post-game speeches instead of playing them on Facebook Live.

Brown’s father is Eddie Brown, known here in Albany as Touchdown Eddie Brown, a great player in the Arena League. Eddie Brown once scored nine TD’s in a Firebirds game; he was great fun to watch. Hard to believe it has been 18 years since they won the Arena Bowl.
