          • Tuesday's Tip Sheet
            February 28, 2017

            Game of the Night – Warriors (-6 ½, 229 ½) at Wizards – 7:05 PM EST

It took Golden State (50-9 SU, 27-30-2 ATS) 55 games last season to reach the 50-win plateau, while this season’s roster needed 59 games following Monday’s 119-108 triumph at Philadelphia. The Warriors failed to cover as 14-point favorites, the fourth time in five games that Steve Kerr’s squad hasn’t taken home the cash. Kevin Durant returned from a one-game absence to lead Golden State with 27 points, while Stephen Curry scored 19 points in spite of not hitting a three-pointer in 11 attempts.

Washington (34-23 SU, 32-25 ATS) is winless since the All-Star break following losses to Philadelphia and Utah. In Sunday’s 102-92 home defeat to the Jazz, the backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal combined to score 45 points, but Wall turned the ball over nine times. The Wizards dropped to 19-2 in their last 21 games at the Verizon Center, as Scott Brooks’ team scored its fewest points at home since a 92-85 victory over Denver on December 8.

Golden State has captured 10 of the past 11 matchups with Washington since 2011, including six straight wins at the Verizon Center. The Warriors have topped the 100-point mark in each of the last six visits to D.C., including a 134-121 shootout victory last February. Curry lit the Wizards up for 51 points in that win, including drilling 11-of-15 shots from downtown.

The Wizards own a 5-2 ATS mark in its last seven opportunities in the underdog role, but is 4-4 ATS this season when receiving points at home. Since suffering their Christmas Day meltdown at Cleveland, the Warriors have compiled a solid 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS mark as a single-digit road favorite in the last six tries.

            Top of the Northwest

The Thunder are hanging around in the Northwest division race with the Jazz as the two teams hook up tonight in Oklahoma City. Utah holds a three-game edge after blowing out Washington on Sunday night, as the Jazz look for a perfect 3-0 road trip with a victory. Quin Snyder’s team has turned into a dangerous squad away from Salt Lake City by winning seven of the last 10 road games, while holding four of the past five away opponents to 95 points or fewer.

OKC tries to finish off its homestand at 4-0 following wins over the Knicks, Lakers, and Pelicans. The offense has turned it on at home of late by topping the 105-point mark in six consecutive games at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Seven of the last nine home games have sailed OVER the total, but both contests against the Jazz this season have finished UNDER the total. The Thunder seek their 11th straight home win over the Jazz since 2011, while going 7-2-1 ATS in this stretch.

            Finding Consistency

Both the Pistons and Blazers sit below the .500 mark heading towards March as each club lost on Sunday. Detroit lost at home for the third time in the last 12 tries in Sunday’s 104-98 setback to Boston as two-point underdogs, but the Pistons have won and covered in each of their past six opportunities as a home favorite. The Pistons outlasted the Blazers in their last meeting at the Moda Center in January, 125-124 in two overtimes, led by Reggie Jackson’s 31 points on 13-of-26 shooting from the floor.

Portland’s road woes continued in Sunday’s 112-106 setback at Toronto, as the Blazers fell to 10-21 on the highway. Terry Stotts’ club dropped to 1-5 SU/ATS the last six opportunities as a road underdog, while owning a dreadful 1-7 ATS mark in the past eight games overall. Portland is listed as a road ‘dog at Detroit for the first time since January 2010, as the Pistons are 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS the past six home matchups with the Blazers.

            Chicago Fire

The Bulls are turning things around at the right time by winning four straight games to forge above the .500 mark. Chicago dominated Cleveland on Saturday night, 117-99 as six-point underdogs to beat the Cavaliers for the third time this season, as Jimmy Butler posted a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. During this winning streak, Chicago has knocked off three of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference (Cleveland, Boston, and Toronto), as the Bulls host the Nuggets tonight.

Denver has put together an inconsistent February with a 5-7 mark, coming off Sunday’s seven-point home setback to Memphis. The Nuggets have struggled on the highway recently by dropping five of their last six games away from Pepsi Center with the only victory coming over the lowly Knicks on February 10. The home team has won seven consecutive games between the Nuggets and Bulls, as Denver outlasted Chicago, 110-107 in late November at Pepsi Center.

            Sun Setting

Phoenix has lost 12 of its last 15 games as the Suns look to close out their three-game road trip at Memphis with a victory. The Suns have been competitive in each loss, falling in overtime at Chicago, while dropping a four-point decision at Milwaukee on Sunday. Phoenix last won on the road at Sacramento at the buzzer on February 3, while allowing at least 100 points in 21 of the past 22 contests overall.

The Grizzlies return to FedEx Forum after rallying to beat the Nuggets on Sunday for only their second win in the last five games. Memphis has lost two straight home contests, but beat Phoenix at FedEx Forum on February 8 by a 110-91 count as 7 ½-point favorites. The Grizzlies are 2-0 this season against the Suns with both victories coming by double-digits, but Memphis is listed as a favorite of 10 points or more for the first time this season.

            La La Bland

The Lakers look to snap a four-game skid after dropping the last three contests by 17 points or more. San Antonio ran Los Angeles at Staples Center on Sunday, 119-98 to suffer its fifth home loss in the last seven tries. The Lakers host the Hornets, looking to avenge a 117-113 setback at Charlotte in December as Los Angeles squandered a 14-point halftime lead.

The Hornets ended a 12-game road losing streak in Saturday’s blowout win at Sacramento, as Charlotte continues a seven-game road swing. Charlotte is playing its second game in Los Angeles in three days after falling short in overtime to the Clippers on Sunday, 124-121 as 10 ½-point underdogs, the third cover in the last four games. In spite of dropping 13 of their last 15 games overall, the Hornets have played better of late, but meltdown losses at Toronto and Detroit isn’t helping its playoff chances.

              • Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

                — Kentucky 73, Vanderbilt 67— Vandy led 25-6 early in the game.

                — Iowa State 86, Oklahoma State 83— High-level game between Final 4 contenders.

                — Western Michigan 70, Northern Illinois 56— 7th straight win for the Broncos.

                — The Professor chimes in with a solid lookalike: Purdue hoop coach Matt Painter and WWE honcho Shane McMahon.

                — Duke 75, Florida State 70— Seminoles have been cruddy on road; very disappointing.

                — Colorado State 78, Wyoming 76– Rivals traded 3-pointers in last 0:15 of a wild ending. Colorado State has won seven games in a row.

                **********

                Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                13) Back in 2010, I’m at the MGM Grand for the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Had a great time; place is too big, but thats another story.

Early on in one of the games, three young guys next to me are going nuts; kid scores a basket to make the score 15-12 and they’re hugging each other. I have no idea why, so had to ask: “Is that guy who scored your brother or something?”

Turns out there was a proposition bet on every game: first team to get to 15 points, and these guys had the winner. I’d get dizzy trying to handicap “first team to 15” bets.

                12) Bad beat of last weekend: San Diego (-5.5) 85, Portland 82— Kid on Portland drained a 3 right at the buzzer to cover the spread; losing Pilots were 10-14 on the arc, 20-20 on line and still lost a game they trailed by 18 in with 17:29 left.

The thing is this: if you bet San Diego in this game, you laid 5.5 points with a team that 48 hours earlier, had LOST BY 58 POINTS on their home court, 96-38 to Gonzaga.

Takes a lot of onions to lay 5.5 with a team coming off a 58-point loss.

                11) Random NBA stats: Cleveland Cavaliers are 0-7 vs spread on the road if they played the night before. Golden State is 3-7 in that situation.

                10) This year, when college hoop referees don’t feel like calling a foul, or feel one isn’t justified, they simply give the “touchdown” signal, as if to say, the defender stayed straight up.

                9) I’m thinking that UCLA’s Bryce Alford reminds me a lot of Jimmer Fredette; terrific with the ball in his hands, couldn’t guard a lamp post.

If Steve Alford hadn’t have gotten the UCLA coaching job, Bryce would be playing ball at New Mexico (and Cullen Neal would’ve gone to St Mary’s). Bryce Alford would be torching what is a down Mountain West Conference.

                8) Petco Park in San Diego flooded over the weekend, after heavy rains combined with a clogged drain or two; the ballfield looks like a pond, but because they recently had a motorcycle race there, the field didn’t have any grass on it anyway and was scheduled to be re-sodded soon.

                7) Duke QB Thomas Sirk got a 6th year of eligibility from the NCAA after he tore his achilles, but he will transfer from Duke and play his last year of college ball elsewhere.

                6) Houston Astros will have 12-foot high screens at Minute Maid Park this year, which will come up when the game starts and will run the length of each dugout, to protect fans from flying bats and foul balls.

                5) Three years ago, Buzz Williams left Marquette for Virginia Tech, an odd move for a basketball coach; Williams went 139-69 in six years at Marquette, 69-37 in Big East games, so he was doing well, but he moved on to Blacksburg anyway.

In three years since, this being the third year, Marquette is 50-43 under Steve Wojciechowski, 20-32 in Big East games, with no NCAA tournament appearances- they’re a bubble team right now, .

Virginia Tech is 52-45 under Williams (41-23 the last two years), 22-31 in ACC games (20-15 the last two years). Hokies are probably going to the NCAA’s for the first time in ten years.

Sometimes it is tough to coach a college team in a pro town, which Milwaukee is, but Williams is a program builder who has done a terrific job at Virginia Tech.

                4) Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles both got the gate from their NFL teams Tuesday; tough to be a 30-ish NFL running back with a big contract.

Football players must look at baseball/NBA guys and their guaranteed contracts and it has to tick them off mightily.

                3) Rangers OF Josh Hamilton had his 11th knee operation Monday; not sure of how many he has had on each knee, but seeing as he only has two knees, there are no good ratios.

                2) I would not want front row seats to a college or NBA game; basketball players are large humans and if they go hard after a loose ball, you wouldn’t want one of them crashing into you.

Couple years ago, Lebron James crashed into golfer Jason Day’s wife and knocked her flying at a game in Cleveland; she took it like a trooper but it had to hurt like hell.

1— Warren Buffett announced Monday that if any Berkshire Hathaway employee exactly nails the Sweet 16 in their NCAA tournament bracket, that person will receive $1M a year for life, as long as only one person does it.

Buffett also offers $100,000 to the Berkshire employee who predicts the most consecutive winners during the tournament. Last year, two guys split the $100,000.

                          Game of the Night – Rockets at Clippers (-2, 232 ½) – 10:35 PM EST - ESPN

Two seasons ago, Houston erased a 3-1 series deficit in the second round of the playoffs to stun Los Angeles, 4-3. The Rockets fell short of the NBA Finals, but still made their mark against the Clippers, who have yet to make the conference finals in franchise history.

Los Angeles (36-23 SU, 30-29 ATS) is returning to health after point guard Chris Paul missed 14 games with a thumb injury. Paul dished out 17 assists and scored 15 points on 4-of-18 shooting in Sunday’s 124-121 overtime victory over the Hornets on Sunday. L.A. failed to cover as 10 ½-point favorites, while dropping to 1-4 ATS the last five games at Staples Center.

The Rockets (42-19 SU, 34-27 ATS) were tripped up by the Pacers on Monday as 9 ½-point favorites, 117-108, falling to 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games. Lou Williams has performed well off the bench for Houston since getting picked up from the Lakers by scoring 27, 17, and 28 points in three games with the Rockets. Houston struggled from downtown by hitting only 10-of-45 attempts from three-point range, while shooting 36% from the floor against Indiana.

In their first matchup this season at Toyota Center, the Rockets routed the Clippers, 140-116 as 11-point favorites on December 30. However, Paul and Blake Griffin both sat out due to injury for Los Angeles, while James Harden posted a triple-double for Houston with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Each of the past five meetings at Staples Center have sailed OVER the total, while the two teams split a pair of matchups in Los Angeles last season.

                          Beasts of the East

The Cavaliers look to maintain the top spot in the Eastern Conference as they own a four-game cushion over the Celtics. Cleveland travels to Boston following a 9-2 record in February, coming off a 102-95 triumph over Milwaukee on Monday. LeBron James returned from his one-game absence to score 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, while Kyrie Irving posted a game-high 25 points. The Cavaliers have done an excellent job on the road with rest recently by producing a 4-0 SU/ATS record in their last four tries.

Boston looks to bounce back following Monday’s ugly home loss to Atlanta, as the Celtics hit the road for five games out west starting Friday in Los Angeles. The Celtics have failed to cash in their last six games at TD Garden, while losing a pair of games at Cleveland by six points each earlier this season. The Cavaliers have captured each of the last three meetings in Boston since the 2015 playoffs, holding the Celtics in those three victories to 95 points or fewer.

                          Life Without Lowry

The Raptors have rebounded from a three-game losing streak in mid-February to win four consecutive contests, including Monday’s 92-91 triumph at New York on DeMar DeRozan’s game-winning jumper. DeRozan’s backcourt mate Kyle Lowry is set to undergo wrist surgery and will likely be out for the remainder of the regular season. However, the Raptors are putting things together at home by winning five of the past six at Air Canada Center as Toronto hosts unrested Washington.

The Wizards head north of the border after knocking off the Warriors on Tuesday as seven-point underdogs, 112-108. Washington has stumbled to a 3-7 record on the second of a back-to-back set, but has managed a 5-5 ATS mark. The Wizards have cashed four of their previous five in the role of a road underdog, but have dropped five consecutive meetings with the Raptors, including a 113-103 home setback in early November.

                          Dallas Domination

The Hawks have won six consecutive matchups against the Mavericks since the start of the 2013-14 season as Dallas visits Atlanta. In the first meeting this season at American Airlines Center in January, the Hawks pulled away from the Mavs, 97-82, while holding Dallas to 39% shooting from the floor.

Dallas hits the road following consecutive home wins over New Orleans and Miami, while getting held to below 100 points in each of the last five games, resulting in four UNDERS. The Mavs’ offense has failed to produce in their last three road losses by scoring 87, 91, and 84 points as Dallas searches for its first victory in Atlanta since March 2013.

                          Boogie Down

DeMarcus Cousins has yet to win a game with his new team as the Pelicans are 0-3 since he was traded from the Kings in late February. Cousins won’t have a chance at a victory tonight as he is suspended for one game by the league after picking up his 18th technical foul in Sunday’s loss at Oklahoma City. New Orleans hosts Detroit, as the Pelicans own an 0-4 ATS home record since knocking off the Spurs in late January.

The Pistons head to the Big Easy off last night’s comeback victory in overtime against the Blazers to finish their homestand at 3-1 SU/ATS. Detroit has struggled with no rest this season by compiling a 2-8 SU/ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back, including a 2-6 SU/ATS ledger on the road. The Pistons haven’t seen much success in New Orleans over the years by losing seven straight visits.

                          Texas Two-Step

The Pacers rallied past the Rockets as 9 ½-point underdogs on Monday, 117-108, as Indiana continues its five-game road swing in San Antonio. In the last matchup with the Spurs on February 13, San Antonio held off Indiana, 110-106, the ninth win in the previous 10 meetings with the Pacers.

The Spurs are back at home for the first time since February 4 following their 6-2 Rodeo Trip, punctuated by consecutive wins in Los Angeles. San Antonio actually hits the highway once again on Friday to New Orleans, as the Spurs own a 4-2 SU and 2-4 ATS mark the last six seasons in their first home game back from the Rodeo Trip.

                          Head-to-Head Trends

-- The Knicks and Magic have split a pair of matchups at Madison Square Garden this season as the teams hook up in Orlando. The last three meetings in Orlando have finished UNDER the total as the Magic own a dreadful 1-11 record in their past 12 games off a win.

-- The 76ers and Heat meet for the final time in the regular season as the home team has won the first three matchups. Philadelphia snapped Miami’s 13-game winning streak last month, while the Heat are 9-1 SU and 8-1-1 ATS in their past 10 home contests.

-- The home team has won each of the past five meetings between the Nuggets and Bucks as the squads meet in Milwaukee. Denver is coming off an impressive victory at Chicago last night, but the Nuggets are 3-10 this season on the second of a back-to-back. The Bucks have slumped to a 1-6 ATS mark in their last seven as a home favorite.

-- Utah owns a 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS mark in the last five matchups with Minnesota as the Jazz captured a pair of victories at Target Center earlier this season. The division rivals battle in Salt Lake City this evening as the Jazz look to improve on a 3-7 ATS record in their past 10 as a home favorite.

-- The Nets and Kings wrap up the night in Sacramento as the last five matchups between these squads have eclipsed the OVER. Brooklyn has dropped 16 consecutive games, while Sacramento has compiled a 3-6 ATS ledger in its last nine opportunities as a home favorite.

                          • Warriors' Durant out at least 4 weeks with leg injury
                            March 1, 2017

Golden State Warriors star forward Kevin Durant will miss at least four weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 sprained MCL and a bone bruise on his left leg, the team announced Wednesday.

The Warriors said Durant will be re-evaluated after the four-week period and it is possible he could return before the end of the regular season.

Durant suffered the injury with 10:27 remaining in the first quarter of Tuesday night's 112-108 loss to the Washington Wizards.

"Following reviews of the MRI by the Warriors' medical staf, it has been determined that Durant suffered a Garde 2 Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) sprain and a tibial bone bruise," the Warriors' statement read. "He will be out of action indefinitely and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. There is no timetable for his return, but it has not been ruled out that he could play again before the end of the regular season."

The injury occurred during a loose-ball situation when Warriors big man ZaZa Pachulia, fouled on the play by Washington's Marcin Gortat, fell backwards into the legs of Durant, who was standing in the left corner.

The 2014 Most Valuable Player showed discomfort and Golden State coach Steve Kerr called for a timeout. Durant immediately left the court and headed toward the locker room.

"I'm always concerned about any injury, because you never know how bad it's going to be, so we'll just wait and see and keep our fingers crossed," Kerr said after the game.

The 28-year-old Durant signed a two-year, $54.3 million contract with the Warriors in the offseason after spending his first nine years of his NBA career with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant is averaging 25.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 59 games this season for the Warriors, who have the best record (50-10) in the NBA and a four-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference.

Following Durant's injury, the Warriors agreed to a deal with veteran swingman Matt Barnes, according to ESPN. The Sacramento Kings waived Barnes on Feb. 20 after needing a roster spot to accommodate the players they received in their DeMarcus Cousins trade with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Barnes averaged 7.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 54 games with the Kings.

                            • Bogut set to join Cavs
                              February 28, 2017

The Cleveland Cavaliers are close to adding frontcourt depth for the rest of the regular season and playoffs.

Veteran center Andrew Bogut is committed to joining the Cavaliers, The Vertical reported Tuesday. He would be the second acquisition for the Cavs this week, joining point guard Deron Williams, who signed with the team on Monday after he was waived by the Dallas Mavericks.

The Cavs now have to wait for Bogut, who was released Monday by the Philadelphia 76ers, to clear waivers before they sign him.

The 12th-year pro was dealt to the 76ers last week from the Mavericks in a deal that included young center Nerlens Noel going to Dallas. Bogut never played a game with the 76ers before he was waived.

Before committing to the Cavs, Bogut also reportedly was sought by the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets.

The 32-year-old started his career with the Milwaukee Bucks and was there seven seasons before he went to Golden State in 2012. He was part of the Warriors championship team in 2014-15.

Last summer, the Warriors traded him to the Mavericks to open cap space to allow them to sign free agent Kevin Durant.
