        • Bulls at Cavaliers
          February 25, 2017

          Game of the Night – Bulls at Cavaliers (-11, 215 ½) – 8:35 PM EST – ABC

For all the ups and downs that Chicago (29-29 SU, 29-29 ATS) has gone through this season, the Bulls have climbed back to .500 and are in the mix for a playoff spot. The Bulls rallied for the front-door cover on Friday night by beating the Suns, 128-121 in overtime as 5 ½-point favorites to win their third straight game. Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler combined for 45 points, while Chicago avenged a loss at Phoenix from earlier this month.

Cleveland (40-16 SU, 27-27-2 ATS) has put together a terrific February following a slumping January as the Cavs are 8-1 SU/ATS this month. The latest victory came on Thursday against the Knicks, 119-104 as 10-point home favorites as Cleveland busted the 109-point mark for the ninth time in February. Seven Cavaliers scored in double-figures, as Kyle Korver came off the bench to post 20 points, including six three-pointers.

Last season, the Bulls captured three of four matchups with the Cavaliers, as Chicago has kept the dominance alive this season with a pair of victories over Cleveland. In the first meeting in December at the United Center, the Bulls held off the Cavaliers as two-point underdogs, 111-105. Butler (26) and Wade (24) led the way for Chicago, while Rajon Rondo put together a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists.

In the next matchup at Quicken Loans Arena on January 4, the Cavaliers played without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in a 106-94 defeat to the Bulls as 3 ½-point favorites. The Bulls dropped 36 second quarter points to grab a six-point halftime lead as Chicago knocked down more three-pointers (13) than free throws (11) for their fifth straight cover in the series.

Chicago has struggled in the second of a back-to-back set by compiling a 5-7 SU/ATS record, while losing four of the past five games away from the United Center. Cleveland has covered five consecutive contests at the “Q,” while eclipsing the OVER in six of the past nine home games.

          Encore Performance?

The Kings’ bench stepped up in their first game following the controversial trade of star DeMarcus Cousins to the Pelicans as Sacramento cruised past Denver, 116-100 on Thursday. Willie Cauley-Stein scored a career-high 29 points, while Buddy Hield put up 16 points in his Sacramento debut. Now, the Kings are listed as a home underdog once again as the Hornets invade Golden 1 Center, looking for their only their second win this month.

Charlotte squandered an 18-point advantage in Thursday’s shocking overtime setback at Detroit to fall to 1-12 SU and 2-9-1 ATS the past 13 games. To make matters worse, the Hornets have dropped 12 straight on the highway, while covering only once in their past seven opportunities as a road favorite. Sacramento held off Charlotte in late January, 109-106 as 7 ½-point road underdogs, as the last three matchups have been decided by five points or less.

          Staying on Fire

Miami continues its push towards a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference after winning its 15th game in 17 tries in Friday’s 108-90 rout of Atlanta as 2 ½-point underdogs. The Heat had won eight consecutive home games before falling to the Magic prior to the All-Star break, as Miami hosts Indiana tonight. Miami took care of Indiana in its first matchup this season at American Airlines Arena in mid-December, 95-89 as 1 ½-point underdogs, the fourth straight home victory over the Pacers.

Indiana snapped a six-game losing streak in Friday’s 102-92 home triumph over Memphis, as the Pacers are hitting the road for only the third time in the last 10 games. Both teams have struggled with no rest this season as Miami owns a 3-7 record, while Indiana has lost nine of 12 times on the second of a back-to-back.

          Pack on the Points

It’s the best in the league against the worst (with no rest) when the Warriors host the Nets. Golden State is listed as a hefty 22-point favorite before it hits the road for five games starting Monday in Philadelphia. We know what the Warriors are capable of, but no one expected them to light up the scoreboard for 50 (yes, 50) points in the third quarter of Thursday’s 123-113 triumph over the Clippers. Amazingly, only three Warriors scored in double-figures as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant combined for 78 points.

The Warriors have lost nine times this season, while the Nets have won just nine times as Brooklyn tries to snap a 15-game skid. The latest setback for Brooklyn came in last night’s 129-109 defeat at Denver as 10-point underdogs, as the Nets look for their first victory in 10 tries with no rest this season. However, Brooklyn has covered in its last two visits to Oracle Arena, while taking Golden State to overtime last season in a loss as 16-point road underdogs.

          Phillin’ it Up

The 76ers continue to cash tickets at a rapid rate, coming off Friday’s 120-112 home victory over the Wizards as 8 ½-point underdogs. Philadelphia extended its ATS hot streak to six games, which includes three straight covers on the road. The 76ers make the short trip to Madison Square Garden to face a Knicks’ squad that has dropped eight of their last 10 contests.

New York has lost three straight games in the home favorite role, while allowing 107, 121, and 131 points in those defeats. The last two wins for the Knicks actually came in low-scoring affairs, including a 94-90 triumph as nine-point home ‘dogs over the Spurs in mid-February. New York is playing with revenge after blowing a double-digit lead in a 98-97 defeat to Philadelphia last month.

          Head-to-Head Trends

-- Atlanta and Orlando meet for the final time in the regular season as the teams hook up in central Florida. The Magic outlasted the Hawks in the first meeting, but Atlanta has captured the last two matchups in double-digit blowouts. The Hawks have won in three of the past four visits to Orlando, while limiting the Magic to 96 points or less in three of those games.

-- The Mavericks and Pelicans have split a pair of games this season with the home team winning each time. The Southwest squads meet in Dallas tonight as the Mavs try to improve on a dreadful 1-10 record with no rest following last night’s loss at Minnesota.

-- Minnesota travels to Houston for the first time this season after the two teams exchanged a pair of victories at Target Center earlier this season. The Wolves cashed each time in the underdog role, while covering in their past three visits to the Toyota Center.

              • Trade Deadline Analysis
                February 24, 2017

Although Trade Deadline Thursday opened with the very real possibility of Indiana's Paul George, Chicago's Jimmy Butler and to a lesser degree, New York's Carmelo Anthony, joining DeMarcus Cousins as All-Stars finding new homes, none of those rumored moves transpired. The Knicks were reportedly willing to move Derrick Rose for Ricky Rubio straight up, but were ultimately rebuffed by the Timberwolves.

There were a handful of deals that were executed and should alter the aspirations of the teams involved. Here's a scorecard analyzing the moves:

                Sacramento-New Orleans

Kings send F/C DeMarcus Cousins and SF Omri Casspi to Pelicans for a top-three protected first-round pick in the 2017 Draft, SG Buddy Hield, SG Tyreke Evans and G Langston Galloway

For a full column on analysis of this deal, click here. It should be noted that both teams being silent on deadline day seems puzzling. The Pelicans failed to find a way to fortify their shooting by adding a Nick Young-type who was readily available and will be forced to buy out disgruntled forward Terrence Jones after being unable to find a trade partner for him. According to USA Today's Sam Amick, the Kings fielded offers for guards Darren Collison, Arron Afflalo and Ben McLemore but decided to wait until the summer to bungle, er, execute their next move. Ty Lawson remains on the roster, too, and you would imagine someone is getting bought out since the need to get Hield experience will be the primary focus going forward.

Impact: The Kings may win a couple more games than they would've had they traded some of the veteran guards mentioned above, but it remains to be seen how Dave Joerger utilizes his rotation when there is clearly a need to expose their young players to major minutes. A 7.5-point home underdog against Denver in the first game following the break, it's clear Vegas will view them as they have the tanking 76ers, Nets and Lakers going forward. The Pels are clearly the league's flavor of the month, curiosity-wise, over the next few weeks. We'll see if they're able to upgrade the roster to give holdovers Solomon Hill, Dante Cunningham and E'Twaun Moore help on the wing. Casspi and Quincy Pondexter are injured.

                Toronto-Orlando

Magic send PF Serge Ibaka to Raptors for SF/SG Terrence Ross and a first-round pick

The first mid-sized domino to fall prior to the deadline came when the Raptors addressed a major trouble spot in the lineup by giving up a streaky bench scorer and a pick in the 20s Ibaka will be a free-agent this offseason but has expressed an interest in staying put. He said the same about remaining in Central Florida when Orlando moved former No. 2 pick Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and lottery selection Domantas Sabonis for Ibaka's services.

It seemed excessive then and it looks even more foolish now despite the fact Oladipo didn't immediately emerge as the franchise player the Magic hoped they were getting. They still gave up on him too soon, for too little. That was the early inclination then and is a certainty now. Oladipo has scored over 20 points in three of the last four games , shooting over 52 percent from the field. He's still just 24 years old. In Ross, the Magic are getting the 2013 Slam Dunk contest winner who once scored 51 points in a game, but he's averaged over 10 points a game only once in his first four seasons and is averaging 10.4 this season. Certainly, he's a serviceable player who should immediately average 25-30 minutes in Frank Vogel's rotation, but the former No. 8 pick isn't likely to turn the corner and suddenly blossom into a gem.

Ibaka has everything to play for over the next few months to land one more juicy long-term deal from either the Raps or someone else. He's scored 20 or more points in three of the final seven games he played for the Magic, but he's a 27-year-old with suspect knees who has averaged his lowest rebounding clip (6.8) since his rookie season a second consecutive year and is averaging a career-high 15.1 points despite being afforded more offensive freedom than he ever had next to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. He is versatile enough to play off the Raptors' key cogs and has experience in the role he'll be asked to play, but he's no longer the feared shot-blocker he was in OKC. Diminishing returns will limit his ability to cash in on his next deal unless he saves his best for last.

                Toronto-Phoenix

Suns send SF P.J. Tucker to Raptors for PF Jared Sullinger and second-round picks in '17 and '18

Tucker was in demand due to his defensive prowess and figures to be on LeBron James duty if ever the need arises. He can guard multiple positions and should supply the stopper Toronto thought it was getting in DeMarre Carroll, who has been limited by injuries. Sullinger had no luck staying healthy either and could be bought out by the Suns, who collected a couple of seconds for Tucker after striking out on a first-rounder.

Impact: By only losing Ross from their rotation, the Raptors strengthened their chances of catching the Celtics in the Atlantic and ultimately challenging Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals again. Considering how important homecourt advantage is to Toronto, I'd expect the Raps to start putting their foot on the gas, which could make them a strong finisher. Tucker and Ibaka will help pick up their defensive level, so if there isn't a drop-off with their offensive prowess, they should make a run. The Magic insist they're not tanking, but any potential boost will require Ross hitting the ground running and Mario Hezonja demonstrating the type of improvement that has eluded him thus far. The Suns moves, picking up Sullinger and buying Mike Scott's rights from the Hawks were executed to help reach the salary cap floor.

                Oklahoma City-Chicago

Bulls send PF Taj Gibson and SF Doug McDermott and '18 second-round pick to Thunder for PG Cameron Payne, PF Joffrey Lauvergne and SG Anthony Morrow

After not moving Butler, the Bulls took a shot at Sam Presti's eye for talent by moving Gibson and McDermott for promising pieces like Payne and Lauvergne, who are still developing and have shown flashes of being legitimate NBA players along the way. Of course, it should dampen spirits that McDermott never panned out for Chicago, who cost them the 16th and 19th picks in 2014 after being named college basketball's Player of the Year at Creighton by virtually everyone. As they usually do, the Thunder wound up winners on deadline day, winding up with a veteran who can help fortify a front line set to also get Enes Kanter back sooner than later. Together with Stephen Adams, OKC's bigs should be a nightly handful. McDermott's addition to serve as a shooter off the bench should aid the cause considering how much the Thunder have struggled from the perimter.

Impact: Oklahoma City got Russell Westbrook immediate help. Even though it cost him his favorite dance partner, it should make his team more formidable down the stretch. It's hard to decipher exactly how this move will affect the Bulls since they've been so difficult to pin down as it is. Bobby Portis becomes the starting power forward, supplying energy and athleticism to a first unit still relying on a veteran core led by Butler, Dwyane Wade, Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez.

                Dallas-Philadelphia

76ers send C Nerlens Noel to Mavericks for C Andrew Bogut, SG Justin Anderson and protected 1st round pick (19-30)

                Atlanta-Philadelphia

76ers send F Ersan Ilyasova to Hawks for C Tiago Splitter, a second-round pick and the right to swap places on a future second-rounder

People have been excited by the process yielding some success for the first time in years, but this is a step back for Philly, which struck a disappointing deal for a former No. 6 pick and one of the first supposed building blocks. Being unable to move disappointing Jahlil Okafor led to the 76ers moving Noel to alleviate the log jam of big men that they've stockpiled, but they could've waited until the offseason given the return. Anderson is a promising wing who should immediately be plugged into the rotation going forward, but the protection on the 2017 first-rounder means the Mavericks will keep the pick if it's inside the top 18, turning the deal into second-rounders the bext two years. That's simply not good enough despite Noel's limited offensive games.

The Mavericks are taking a risk that they'll have to match a sweet offer to keep Noel beyond this offseason since he's a restricted free agent, but they'll have nearly two months to take a close-up look at his work habits and how he meshes with the group. Noel and Joel Embiid played all of eight minutes together over the past season despite establishing a great friendship. "The Process" called Noel his best friend in Philly, and it would've been interesting to see if their chemistry would've translated to the court given more time. Anderson is a willing defender and plays with intensity, but he shouldn't have been the biggest piece in a deal for a 22-year-old 7-footer. Moving Ilyasova for more picks was a solid move for Philly and a no-brainer for Atlanta, who haven't gotten much from Splitter due to injuries

Impact: While the Sixers will stay on their rebuilding course, the Mavs made a move that should help them remain a contender to hang with the Pelicans in attempting to chase down Denver for the No. 8 spot. Between Rick Carlisle's coaching and young legs fueling a revamped group that won't include Deron Williams, who is being bought out, Dallas should remain relevant and shouldn't be picked on over the last six weeks. If they strike the right balance and Yogi Ferrell and Seth Curry remain productive, the Mavs should be tough night in and night out. Ilyasova certainly helps Atlanta thanks to his versatility. He's a willing rebounder and has remained healthy and engaged this season, serving as a mentor to Dario Saric in addition to a productive presence on the floor. Mike Budenholzer can utilize him in various ways with Paul Millsap and Dwight Howard, so the Hawks certainly improved.

                Houston-L.A. Lakers

Lakers send G Lou Williams to Houston for SF/SG Corey Brewer and a first-round pick. In a separate deal, they moved PG Marcelo Huertas to Rockets for PG Tyler Ennis

Magic Johnson's first deals as Lakers president were both struck with the Rockets, who gave L.A. solid value for their leading scorer in Williams, one of the top sources of bench firepower in the league throughout his career. He's flammable and gives Mike D'Antoni another weapon who was compromising L.A.'s tanking efforts.

Impact: This was a win for both, but obviously immediately favors Houston, who become all the more formidable as they look to prove their up-tempo system and ability to excel from 3-point range can ultimately derail Golden State. It's up to D'Antoni to strike the right balance between Williams and defensive standout Patrick Beverley next to James Harden, but both high-energy players should remain productive. The Lakers are going to stay on course, playing their young guys and hoping to finish in the top-three so they can keep their pick in June's draft.

                Washington-Brooklyn

Nets send SG/SF Bojan Bogdanovic and PF Chris McCullough to Wizards for PF Andrew Nicholson, SG Marcus Thornton and a 2017 first-round pick

                Houston-Brooklyn

Rockets send SG/SF KJ McDaniels to Brooklyn for a second-round pick

Impact: The Nets didn't end up dealing center Brook Lopez, holding on to a franchise mainstay that they've dangled at the deadline for about five years now. They wanted two first-rounders, but couldn't even get one. They did add a pick from the Wizards that will likely be in the low 20s, but it was a quiet deadline for a team that still needs one more win to reach double-digits in that category. Washington did well in acquiring Bogdanovic and McCullough for players who couldn't crack Scott Brooks' rotation and a pick worth sacrificing given their need for depth. Bogdanovic is the key, since he's been inconsistent as a volume shooter for Brooklyn. He'll be utilized as a scorer on the wing in D.C. and is versatile enough to make it work provided he doesn't slump.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…….

                  3) Florida State 76, Clemson 74— Seminoles won first meeting this year, 109-61; Clemson is a huge disappointment- they’re 1-9 in ACC games that were decided by 6 or less points.

                  12) Kentucky 76, Florida 66— De’Aaron Fox didn’t play for the Wildcats but they won anyway, taking a one-game lead in the SEC. Malik Monk scored 30 points in the second half; Kentucky had a 22-4 edge on the foul line in this game.

                  11) Iowa 83, Maryland 69— Young Terrapins have now lost five of their last seven games after a 20-2 start; they’re going to be a fashionable pick to be upset in the first round of the NCAA’s.

                  10) UCLA 77, Arizona 72— Road team won both regular season meetings; would be fun if there was a rubber match in Las Vegas in two weeks, at the Pac-12 tourney.

                  9) Providence 73, Marquette 69— Friars won their last four games to even their Big East mark at 8-8; they swept Marquette this year, with two wins by total of five points.

On Selection Sunday, Providence’s #277 non-conference strength of schedule could haunt them.

                  8) Miami 55, Duke 50— Grayson Allen (ankle) didn’t play. Blue Devils went 5-21 on the arc, with Luke Kennard going 6-20 from the floor.

Duke freshman Harry Giles played 19:00 and scored two points; mock drafts have him going around 10-12th in the NBA Draft. if he gets picked that high, someone is going to get fired; the kid has had two major knee operations and hasn’t played very well this year. Maybe he turns out to be a great NBA player someday, but what visual evidence is there right now to point that way?

                  7) Upsets of the Day:
                  — BYU (+20) 79, Gonzaga 71
                  — The Citadel (+13) 102, Samford 96
                  — Mercer (+8.5) 64, Chattanooga 54
                  — Iowa (+8) 83, Maryland 69

                  6) Oregon 75, Stanford 73— Ducks swept Bay Area trip, but wins were by a total of five points- they didn’t look that great in either game. If I’m looking for potential Final Four teams, I’m not looking for teams getting taken to the wire by Stanford.

                  5) Western Michigan 80, Ball State 55— Surging Broncos have won their last six games after they started season 7-15. WMU point guard Wilder is a very good player.

                  4) Oklahoma 81, Kansas State 51— Lon Kruger gets career win #600; he might be the most underrated coach in the country.

                  3) Belmont 68, Tennessee State 63— Belmont finishes 15-1 in the OVC, will have ton of pressure on them to win the conference tournament next weekend. Bruins are 66-14 in OVC games; they won the OVC tournament twice in their first four years in the league.

                  2) BYU 79, Gonzaga 71— Sports are fun; unusual things happen. This is third year in a row that BYU has won in Spokane. Joe Lunardi’s computer had to be working overtime after this result. As for the Zags, not a great time to have your confidence shaken.

                  1) Indiana 63, Northwestern 62— Hoosiers ended first half on a 22-0 run that ended with a 70-footer banked in at the buzzer. Game ended with Indiana’s Bryant’s scoring 3-point play with 0:02 left for the win. If you’re a Northwestern fan, it is time to get queasy.

Game of the Night – Pelicans at Thunder – 7:05 PM EST

Yes, New Orleans has become more relevant on the NBA landscape in the last week following the acquisition of DeMarcus Cousins from Sacramento. This isn’t LeBron James switching teams, but the Pelicans will be more of a threat to make the playoffs with the 1-2 punch of former Kentucky Wildcat standouts Cousins and Anthony Davis. However, the Pelicans are 0-2 since the trade coming off Saturday’s 96-83 defeat at Dallas.

The Pelicans travel to Oklahoma City looking to avoid the four-game series sweep to the Thunder. OKC led New Orleans from start to finish in their first matchup at Chesapeake Energy Arena in early December, 101-92 as six-point favorites. Russell Westbrook posted one of his many triple-doubles for the Thunder by scoring 28 points, pulling down 17 rebounds, and dishing out 13 assists, while Davis put up a game-high 37 points for New Orleans.

The Thunder captured the next two meetings in the Big Easy, winning in late December as two-point favorites, 121-110. Westbrook roasted the Pelicans for 42 points, which includes hitting 16 free throws. Last month, OKC picked up its third win over New Orleans, 114-105, as the Thunder built a 19-point halftime advantage. The Pelicans are seeking their first victory at Oklahoma City since February 6, 2015 in a 116-113 triumph as six-point underdogs.

Billy Donovan’s squad has won nine of their last 10 games in the home favorite role, including Friday’s 110-93 blowout of the Lakers as 10-point chalk. The Thunder has eclipsed the 105-point mark in their last six home contests, resulting in four OVERS. Meanwhile, New Orleans has compiled a 4-7 SU/ATS record with no rest off Saturday’s loss at Dallas, but the Pelicans have put together a 3-1 SU/ATS mark in their last four opportunities as a road underdog.

                            District Fine

The Wizards and Jazz weren’t expected to be division leaders after the All-Star break, but both Washington and Utah are in prime position to qualify for the postseason. The two squads hook up at the Verizon Center as the Wizards have won 19 of their last 20 home contests, but are coming off a loss in their past game at Philadelphia on Friday, 120-112 as 8 ½-point favorites.

The Jazz started the second half on a high note by routing the Bucks on Friday, 109-95 as 3 ½-point favorites to grab their 16th road victory of the season. Utah is rolling on the highway of late by posting a 5-2 SU and 3-4 ATS record in the last seven away contests, although four of those victories are against teams currently below .500. The Jazz have struggled in the road underdog role this season by compiling a 1-10 SU/ATS mark in this role, while losing three straight visits to Washington.

                            Boston Bounce-Back

The Celtics closed the first half with a controversial one-point setback at Chicago, while starting the second half by squandering a 10-point halftime lead in a critical 107-97 divisional loss at Toronto on Friday. Boston closed the regular season series with Toronto dropping three of four games, but the Celtics still lead the Atlantic division by three games as they head to Detroit.

The Pistons rallied from an 18-point deficit to shock the Hornets in overtime on Thursday and pick up the front-door cover as 4 ½-point favorites. Detroit has won and covered six consecutive games as a home favorite, while owning a 4-2 ATS mark as a home underdog this season, as the Pistons opened as 1 ½-point ‘dogs. Stan Van Gundy’s team has lost two of three matchups with the Celtics this season, including a 94-92 home defeat to Boston on a last-second Al Horford lay-up in mid-November.

                            Raptor Rally

Toronto has overcome a pair of double-digit deficits in its last two home victories against Charlotte and Boston, while limiting each team to 97 points or fewer. The Raptors shoot for their third straight win against the Blazers, but Toronto will have to do it without standout guard Kyle Lowry, who is sidelined with a wrist injury. Dwane Casey’s club has stumbled to a 3-6 ATS mark in its last nine games at the Air Canada Center, while failing to cash as eight-point road favorites in a 95-91 December victory at Portland.

The Blazers also needed a comeback in their last game, rallying to shock the Magic, 112-103 on Thursday for only their 10th road win in 30 tries this season. Portland is seeking consecutive road wins for the first time since early November, while dropping four of its past five in the role of an away underdog.

                            Gold Rush

The Nuggets are trying to build a home-court advantage at Pepsi Center, as Denver has won eight of its past 10 home contests. Denver pulled away from Brooklyn on Friday to cash as 10-point favorites, 129-109, as the Nuggets look to snap a five-game skid coming off a victory when the Grizzlies invade the Rockies.

The Grizzlies were blitzed in the second quarter of Friday’s 102-92 setback at Indiana by getting outscored, 36-23 before halftime. Memphis has dropped three of its last four games with the only victory in this stretch coming against woeful Brooklyn. The Grizzlies have captured seven of the past eight meetings with the Nuggets, including a pair of victories this season.

                            Slump Buzz-ters

The Hornets snapped a 12-game road losing streak in Saturday’s 99-85 triumph at Sacramento as 3 ½-point favorites. Charlotte will try for consecutive victories with a trip to Los Angeles to face a Clippers’ squad that beat the Hornets on February 11 by a 107-102 count. The Hornets have finished UNDER the total in five of the past six games, while covering for the third time in the last four contests away from Spectrum Center.

The Clippers faced a gauntlet to begin the second half of the season and fell short in losses to the Warriors and Spurs. Chris Paul returned from his thumb injury to score 17 points in a 105-97 setback to San Antonio on Thursday, as Los Angeles had its five-game ATS hot streak snapped. However, the Clippers have won six straight games as a home favorite, while covering five times in this stretch since the start of January.
