    • Tuesday's Tip Sheet
      November 22, 2016

Six of nine underdogs in the NBA cashed tickets on Monday night, including outright victories by the 76ers and Grizzlies. The Raptors snapped a three-game ATS winless streak by covering in an eight-point loss to the Clippers, while Washington dropped to 4-9 ATS this season in a home victory over Phoenix as 7 ½-point favorites, 106-101. Since Sunday, underdogs have compiled a 10-5 ATS record, while the UNDER has hit in 10 of the past 15 games.

Game of the Night – Thunder (-3, 220 ½) at Lakers - 10:30 PM EST

Oklahoma City ventures out west for a three-game road swing that begins at Staples Center against the Lakers. The Thunder lost to a short-handed Pacers’ squad in overtime on Sunday, 115-111 as 9 ½-point home favorites to fall to 2-5 SU/ATS the last seven games overall. Russell Westbrook compiled his fifth triple-double of the season by scoring 31 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and dishing out 15 assists, but only two other Thunder players put up double-figures in the loss.

The Lakers wrap up a four-game homestand following consecutive losses to the Spurs and Bulls. In Sunday’s 118-110 defeat to Chicago, the Lakers were outrebounded, 56-37, but received 43 points off the bench from Lou Williams and Larry Nance, Jr. Los Angeles has cashed the OVER in five consecutive games, as the defense has allowed at least 116 points in each of the past four contests.

The Thunder cruised past the Lakers in their first meeting at Chesapeake Energy Arena on October 30 as 8 ½-point favorites, 113-96. Westbrook burned the Lakers for a triple-double, as the Thunder shot 47% from the floor. Oklahoma City has won nine straight meetings with Los Angeles since 2014, while posting a 7-2 ATS mark in this stretch.

      Blazin’ a Trail

Portland (8-7 SU, 5-10 ATS) evened its road mark at 4-4 with Sunday’s 129-109 blowout of Brooklyn to snap a seven-game ATS drought. The Trail Blazers continue their five-game road trip in New York tonight facing a Knicks’ team that has won four consecutive games at Madison Square Garden. New York (6-7 SU, 6-7 ATS) took care of Atlanta on Sunday afternoon, 104-94, the third time in the last four home victories the Knicks have held their opponent to below 100 points.

The Blazers have captured seven of the last nine meetings with the Knicks since 2013, including four consecutive victories at MSG. Portland hasn’t allowed more than 100 points in any of the previous three meetings in New York, but the Blazers have currently given up triple-digits in eight straight games, resulting in five OVERS.

      Humbled Hawks

Atlanta (9-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) was riding a six-game winning streak less than a week ago, which included handed Cleveland its first loss of the season. However, the Hawks have lost back-to-back road contests at Charlotte and New York over the weekend as Atlanta owns a one-game lead over the Hornets in the Southeast. Atlanta welcomes in New Orleans tonight as the Hawks have won six of seven games at Philips Arena this season.

The Pelicans (4-10 SU, 7-7 ATS) have been a covering machine of late by cashing in four straight contests, including in home underdog wins over the Blazers and Hornets. New Orleans has won only once away from the Big Easy this season, compiling a 1-5 road mark. However, the Pelicans have cashed in three of the last four road contests, including twice as an underdog of 7 ½ point or more. New Orleans opened as an eight-point underdog tonight in Atlanta, as the Pelicans lost both matchups with the Hawks last season.

      Chicago Fire

The Bulls (9-5 SU, 10-4 ATS) have turned into one of the best bets in the league this season, covering in six consecutive games. Chicago is nearing the end of its annual “Circus Trip” as the Bulls have won three of their first four games, including Sunday’s underdog victory over the Lakers. Dwyane Wade sat out his first game of the season, but is expected to suit up for the Bulls tonight in Denver. The Bulls are listed as a favorite for the first time in five games, as Chicago has put together a 5-1 ATS mark when laying points this season.

The Nuggets (5-8 SU, 9-4 ATS) haven’t won consecutive games this season, coming off Sunday’s 105-91 triumph over the Jazz, avenging a four-game sweep from last season. Denver has cashed in four straight and three in a row at Pepsi Center, but owns a 2-4 record at home this season. The Nuggets are riding a nine-game home winning streak against the Bulls dating back to 2006, including a 115-110 victory last February.

      • Three-pointer: Thanksgiving turmoil
        November 22, 2016

The NBA annually rests on Thanksgiving, leaving the sports stage to football. Action is heavy on Wednesday and Friday, so going in and coming out of the brief respite in a positive fashion is always the top priority coaches have as they prepare for this week.

We’ve locked in on the three teams that need to manage this well given expectations and how things are going for them thus far. New York, New Orleans and Oklahoma City will all sit down for their turkey knowing that what awaits them when they’re done with their cranberry sauce will go a long way into deciding what mood they’ll be in entering December.

        Knicks

It was easy to mock Derrick Rose’s “Superteam” declaration after New York opened 1-3, which was punctuated by Mike D’Antoni coming into town with the Rockets and winning 117-99. Over the last week, the Knicks won three of four games for the first time under Jeff Hornacek, pulling off an upset of Southeast Division-leading Atlanta on Sunday that followed a closed-door meeting between players and team president Phil Jackson.

With a home date on Tuesday against slumping Portland and a weekend home-and-home against Charlotte, this group has a chance to climb above .500 for the first time all season with a surge.

Joakim Noah entered the week dealing with an illness, but may be headed to the bench in favor of Kyle O’Quinn since he hadn’t been playing well before missing Sunday’s game against the Dwight Howard-led Hawks. While Rose and Carmelo Anthony were being cast in the scapegoat role for not allowing talented 21-year-old Kristaps Porzingis assert himself earlier and impose his will, Noah had escaped criticism until his regression became glaring.

Less than a month in, it’s a bad sign that finger-pointing has already started, with even Jackson and Hornacek not above such behavior. Going out and playing an exceptional defensive game to beat the Hawks was a great sign, but if this team that’s already being pulled apart at the seams less than a month in doesn’t follow up that success, it’s hard to fathom them making it through 82 games.

Next week’s games feature Oklahoma City coming to town in addition to a home-and-home with Minnesota. The Knicks want their fans engaged and enthusiastic for those showcase games, which magnifies the importance of putting their best foot forward this week.

        Pelicans

It can be argued that no one is having a better season than Anthony Davis, who was leading the NBA in scoring (31.7) and blocks (3.0) while ranking sixth in rebounds (11.3), but New Orleans has had very little to show for it, digging themselves a hole by starting 0-8.

        Now, there’s finally hope.

The Pelicans have won consecutive games for the first time and welcomed back point guard Jrue Holiday from an excused absence as he stuck by his wife following brain surgery to remove a tumor. All Holiday did in his first two games back was participate in victories over the Trail Blazers and Hornets, averaging 21.5 points and eight assists while shooting 55 percent. Clearly, he’s kept himself in shape.

He’ll be back in the starting lineup sooner than later, so Davis will have someone making plays for him rather than vice-versa, while guys like Tim Frazier and E’Twaun Moore can return to reserve roles they’re better-suited for.

Shooting guard Tyreke Evans is also due back by month’s end, so the Pelicans will finally get back to full strength, but the 0-8 start means they can’t afford to wait. You can tell Alvin Gentry means business since he’s cut the minutes of ineffective rookie guard Buddy Hield, so expect New Orleans to pull out all the stops as it tries to navigate a difficult week that begins Tuesday in Atlanta, features a home date against Karl-Anthony Towns and the Timberwolves on Wednesday and a weekend two-game excursion to Portland and Dallas for duels with teams that are also struggling to get going. Davis will need to put the Pels on his back, but the weight isn’t as heavy with Holiday now around to help ease the burden.

        Thunder

Oklahoma City opened 6-1 as “KD-who?” chants became audible and the Russell Westbrook MVP campaign began in full swing. The Thunder have lost five of seven since, and if they had lost that Westbrook-James Harden duel that they held on to win at home 105-103, total panic would’ve probably already set in.

On Sunday, Westbrook hit a cold-blooded 3-pointer just to send OKC to overtime at home against Paul George-less Indiana, but then couldn’t finish the job as Pacers backups emerged victorious.

Are the Thunder dead as a title contender?

The brilliance of Westbrook and presence of quality young pieces like Steven Adams, Victor Oladipo, Enes Kanter and Andre Roberson provides hope that the future will remain bright, but the loss to Indy was a crusher because the team will spend the holiday on the road in California for games against the Lakers and Kings, coming out of the break in Denver before a Saturday night home date with Detroit.

All of these games are winnable, but the Thunder have to turn it on if they’re still going to be mentioned as an elite team. Adams is dealing with a broken finger while Oladipo is still learning how to be most effective playing next to Westbrook, so the growing pains aren’t necessarily unexpected, but they are frustrating.

Westbrook must find the right balance between his relentless solo act late in games and allowing others to find a rhythm so they can ease his burden. A big week would ease the pressure.

            November 23, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Kristaps Porzingis had 31 points and nine rebounds, Derrick Rose scored six of his 18 points down the stretch, and the New York Knicks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 107-103 on Tuesday night.

Rose made the go-ahead basket with a little more than 3 minutes remaining and hit the jumper that clinched it with 6.8 seconds left.

Carmelo Anthony finished with 17 points despite a scoreless fourth quarter for the Knicks, who won their fifth straight at home. Brandon Jennings had 11 assists off the bench.

Damian Lillard scored 22 points for the Trail Blazers but fell to 4-1 at Madison Square Garden. CJ McCollum added 16 points.

            NUGGETS 110, BULLS 107

DENVER (AP) - Rookie Jamal Murray scored a season-high 24 points, Will Barton hit two free throws with 9.5 seconds left and the Nuggets beat the Bulls.

It was Denver's 10th straight home win over the Bulls and its 16th in the last 17 meetings at Pepsi Center.

Butler had 35 points and eight rebounds for Chicago, which last won in Denver on Feb. 8, 2006. Dwyane Wade had 22 points after sitting out Sunday's game against the Lakers.

The Nuggets used a 22-0 run at the start of the second quarter to take a 41-31 lead. Murray had 15 of his 17 first half points in the period and Wilson Chandler scored 12 of his 16 in the second quarter.

The game was tied when Barton was fouled on a drive to the basket, and he hit two free throws left to give Denver a 109-107 lead. Isaiah Cannon shot an airball on a 3-point attempt and the Nuggets got the ball.

            PELICANS 112, HAWKS 94

ATLANTA (AP) - Tim Frazier had 21 points and 14 assists, Terrence Jones added 17 points and the Pelicans won their third straight game with a victory over the Hawks.

Pelicans forward Anthony Davis returned to begin the fourth quarter after bruising his right knee and missing the second and third periods. Davis, a three-time All-Star and the NBA's leading scorer, finished with 13 points.

New Orleans led by 20 at the end of the first quarter and never let up.

Dennis Schroder and Kyle Korver each scored 14 for the Hawks, who have lost three in a row. Atlanta was tied for the Eastern Conference lead last week but now begins a five-game road trip playing its worst basketball of the young season.

The Pelicans have won five of seven and are 3-0 since Jrue Holiday returned after missing the first 12 games to be with his sick wife.

            LAKERS 111, THUNDER 109

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nick Young hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5 seconds to play, and the Los Angeles Lakers blew a 14-point lead in the final minutes before rallying for a 111-109 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

Young finished with 17 points and Jordan Clarkson had 18 for the Lakers, who survived a monster performance by Russell Westbrook in the final minutes.

After Westbrook scored 17 points in a five-minute span to trim the Lakers' big lead to one point, Steven Adams scored on a go-ahead putback of Westbrook's miss with 13.9 seconds to play.

The Lakers then passed the ball around the perimeter before Young coolly drained his fourth 3-pointer of the night.

Westbrook missed a long shot shortly before the buzzer.

            • Wednesday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

              13) Fort Wayne 71, Indiana 68 OT— This is why big-name teams don’t go on the road, even though in this game, the crowd was split at least 50-50, with the Hoosiers being so popular in Indiana. TV guys said there was more red than blue in the crowd, so maybe Indiana had more fans.

Fort Wayne is a pretty good team in the Summit League, 66-36 the last three years, 31-15 in Summit games, but they’ve never made the NCAA tourney- this could be the year.

This was just a great game for college basketball; a mid-major getting a big boy in their own gym, then beating them. Good for the sport, good for the city of Fort Wayne, good for people at home watching on TV.

              12) The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is in Springfield, MA but there is also a college basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. Somehow, Jerry Tarkanian is not in this Hall of Fame, which makes the decision-makers there look plain stupid.

How can you have Norm Stewart, Gene Keady and Lou Carnesecca in there, but not Tark? It is an oversight that needs to be corrected, and don’t give me his NCAA issues— Eddie Sutton had more baggage than a full airplane and he’s been inducted.

              11) I’d love to know what the financial bottom line was for the Texans-Raiders game in Mexico City Monday night; Oakland gave up a home game- they played in a bigger stadium and it was full. Just curious who made how much money; you’ll know it REALLY profitable if they do it again next season.

              10) North Carolina has won the Maui Classic three times; they made the Final Four that year all three times, and won the national title two of the three years.

              9) Mississippi State’s most productive player, Quandarry Weatherspoon, is out for the year with a wrist injury. 3-1 Bulldogs were already the 2nd-youngest team in America, and not especially deep.

              8) Philadelphia 76ers have improved a lot; they’ve won their last four home games and are 7-2 vs spread as a home underdog- they still haven’t been favored to win a game.

              7) It is funny in college basketball; once you beat a team, especially in a non-league game, then you become their biggest fan- every game they win helps your NCAA tournament profile. Good example is Northwestern, which beat Texas Monday- they need the Longhorns to have a great year, so that win looks better in March than it does now.

              6) Why would Jimbo Fisher leave Florida State for LSU? As long as Nick Saban is at Alabama, LSU is a high-paying job where you’re going to take a ton of grief for being second banana to the Crimson Tide. If they fired Les Miles, they’ll fire you.

Fisher is King of the Castle at Florida State; he is in an easier league and in a better state for recruiting. I’m assuming he is very well-paid, with less grief. He ain’t going anywhere.

              5) I’m not sure what this says exactly, but when UConn had their preseason conditioning run, head coach Kevin Ollie finished third. I know Ollie played in the NBA and all, but you probably want your players to be in better shape than the coach.

              4) How much is a quarterback worth in Las Vegas? Looks like Andrew Luck won’t play Thursday against the Steelers; point spread went from Pittsburgh -3 to Steelers -9. Six points is a big jump. Scott Tolzien (0-1-1 as an NFL starter) will play QB for Indy. Looks like former Miami U QB Stephen Morris would come off the practice squad to be the backup.

              3) Speaking of Las Vegas, the new NHL team in Vegas will be called the Golden Knights. The Maloof family, who used to own the Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino, own 15% of the Golden Knights- they begin play next season at T-Mobile Arena.

              2) TV analyst/former Illinois hooper Stephen Bardo told a great story on TV Tuesday about when he played in college, Illinois played in the Maui Classic one year. TV analyst Bill Raftery rode on the Illini’s flight home, so Bardo was picking his brain about the television business, knowing that one day, he wanted to do that.

Bardo went on to say that Raftery sat next to him the whole (long) flight home and answered every question Bardo had about TV “….and thats why I consider Bill Raftery to be the best.” A very nice tribute; Bardo is a good TV analyst by the way.

1— Quite a day at the White House Tuesday: President Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor to 21 people, including Vin Scully, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Tom Hanks, Robert Deniro, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Redford, Bill Gates.

Imagine what that room was like? Incredible star power.

No doubt that Hanks becomes the first former vendor at the Oakland Coliseum to get this prestigious award.

CLEVELAND (AP) Kevin Love scored an NBA-record 34 points in the first quarter, LeBron James had his 44th triple-double, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Portland 137-125 on Wednesday night.

Love fell three points shy of the league record of 37 for points in any quarter set by Golden State's Klay Thompson on Jan. 23, 2015.

Love made 11 of 14 field goal attempts, including 8 of 10 on 3-pointers in the first quarter. He finished with 40 points, 11 off his career high.

James had 31 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists for his second triple-double this season. He also passed Guy Rodgers for 17th place on the career assist list. Cleveland also set a franchise with 20 3-pointers.

Damian Lillard scored 40 points for Portland, including 25 in the second half.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Curry had 31 points with seven 3-pointers and nine assists, Kevin Durant scored 28 and Golden State found an astonishing first-half offensive flow to run away from undermanned Los Angeles.

The Warriors' franchise-record 47 assists - on 53 baskets - are the most in the NBA this season and surpassed their record of 46 in 1981.

Golden State had 26 assists on 29 baskets before the break, as in sync as the Warriors have been since adding Durant during the offseason and far better than when they took a 20-point beating at Los Angeles less than three weeks ago.

Rookie No. 2 overall draft pick Brandon Ingram scored a career-best 16 points in his first start for Los Angeles, which had no answers defensively as Golden State shot 61.6 percent with 19 3-pointers.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting in 20 minutes in his return for Dallas after the 13-time All-Star missed eight games with a strained left Achilles tendon.

Austin Rivers added 22 points for the Clippers (14-2). They had a 30-6 run in the second and third quarters on the way to their fourth straight win and 11th in 12 games.

Harrison Barnes had 22 to lead the Mavericks (2-12). They lost their seventh straight game to match their longest skid since February 1999, during Nowitzki's rookie season. Dallas is off to its worst start since going 1-23 in 1993-94.

                              • Thursday’s six-pack

Six interesting college basketball scores from Wednesday:

                                — Oklahoma State 97, Georgetown 70— Hoyas are a soft team.

                                — Louisville 68, Old Dominion 62 OT— Surprisingly tense game in the Bahamas.

                                — Cavaliers 137, Blazers 125- Kevin Love scored 34…..in the FIRST QUARTER!!!

                                — Oregon 79, UConn 69— Huskies are 1-4 vs D-I teams and now have injury issues; could be a long winter in Nutmeg State.

                                — Baylor 71, VCU 63— Bears play Michigan State today in semis at the Battle of Atlantis.

                                — North Carolina 71, Wisconsin 56— Tar Heels win Maui Classic; other three times they did that, they made the Final Four. Right now, they’re pretty clearly the best team in the country.

                                Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 10, bottom three teams…….

                                32) Browns— Next weekend will be a little more fun for Cleveland fans; its the Browns’ bye week.

                                31) 49ers— Lost last nine games; play red-hot Dolphins in Miami this week. Chances are that’ll be ten losses in a row.

                                30) Jaguars— Lost last five games, last three by 7 or less points.

                                10) Dolphins— They’ve got lot of good receivers; was mystified why they had less than 100 yards of offense thru 53:00 in LA last week. Not a big Tannehill fan, but he’s on a roll right now.

                                9) Falcons— Someone is going to give Atlanta OC Kyle Shanahan a head coaching job next season; will his dad come along to help out?

                                8) Giants— Seven wins by a total of 27 points; expect to see them pummel Cleveland this week or I’ll list them as a suspect for a quick exit in January.

                                7) Broncos— 7-0 when they score 20+ points, 0-3 when they do not. Still think QB Siemian is a suspect, but as long as he doesn’t screw things up, he’s OK for now. Their defense is that good.

                                6) Redskins— Jay Gruden is an underrated coach; he’s helped make a dysfunctional franchise successful. Washington took lot of grief for drafting Cousins the same year they traded the farm to draft RGIII; seems like a good idea now.

                                5) Chiefs— 18-4 in last 22 games, but offense has struggled last three weeks. Big game in Denver Sunday; NBC chose that game instead of Patriots-Jets.

                                4) Seahawks— Drafting is such an inexact science; Russell Wilson, Joe Montana were 3rd round picks, Tom Brady a 6th round pick. Look at Dak Prescott; he was a 4th round pick after a DUI a month before the draft. Then look at some of the stiffs drafted first. Go figure.

                                3) Raiders— Jack Del Rio was once the catcher on USC’s baseball team, when one of the pitchers was a guy named Mark McGwire.

                                2) Patriots— Will Brady/Belichick retire at same time? Imagine the poor bastards who would have to step into those big shoes? When does Jimmy Garoppolo hit the free agent market?

                                1) Cowboys— Very seldom does a team win/cover nine games in a row, and never, ever with a rookie QB. Interesting game today with the Redskins.
