Handicapping Sweeps

The NBA Playoffs often find many twists and turns when it comes to handicapping the postseason. One of the more enlightening is when teams are winless in a series and are about to be swept. How do they respond? We put the question to our all-knowing, well-oiled database and the results are clearly definitive. Take a look.

These are results for teams in Game Four of a playoff series, down 0-3. All results are since 1991 and are SU (Straight Up), ATS Against The Spread), and in Over / Under total sequence unless noted otherwise.

Home:
24-39 SU and 26-34-3 ATS
30-31-2 Over / Under
22-20-2 ATS dog

As you can see it’s out with the old and in with the new when it comes to teams staving off elimination in Game Four of a best of seven playoff series – especially when favored to win.

FYI: Dogs of more than 8 points are 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS while teams off an ATS win are 0-6 SU and 0-5-1 ATS. Meanwhile, games with an Over / Under total of more than 210 points are 5-1 OVER. There you have it. Another edge to add to your handicapping arsenal this postseason.

Curry expected to play in Game 4
April 23, 2016

HOUSTON (AP) Stephen Curry is expected to play Sunday in Game 4 of Golden State's first-round series against Houston.

Curry sprained his right ankle in the series opener and missed the last two games. Golden State won the first one without him, but Houston took Game 3 on Thursday night to cut the series deficit to 2-1.

The Warriors officially listed him as probable, but coach Steve Kerr says he expects him to play.

Curry participated in a 5-on-5 scrimmage in practice Saturday and says that if he doesn't have any setbacks he ''should be good'' for Sunday.

He says the biggest thing was feeling like his ankle was stable when he tried to pivot or make moves to avoid defenders. He says: ''I can deal with a little discomfort that comes along with it as long as it feels stable

--Cal Bears got good news; big man Ivan Rabb will be back for his sophomore year in Berkeley; he is the highest-rated returning player in the country.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

13) Tremendous day of games today, lot of good stuff. Washington beat the Twins in 16 innings, in a game with 516 pitches thrown, 27 players used, 14 pitchers. Game took 5:56, with 27 hits and 32 strikeouts. Great fun.

12) Cubs are already 6-1 against Cincinnati this year; they've outscored the Reds 60-20 in those seven games. Reds are not a good baseball team.

11) Yesterday's quiz answer was Hideo Nomo as author of the only no-hitter at Coors Field; Nomo pitched in Denver 10 times. In his other nine starts, aside from the no-hitter, Nomo was 2-1, 9.67, allowing 11 HRs in 44.2 IP.

10) Pitcher Shelby Miller wound up playing left field for Arizona in the 13th inning yesterday, as SS Nick Ahmed got thrown out for arguing balls/strikes and the Snakes were out of position players. Pitchers Zack Greinke and Jon Niese both had pinch-hits in the game.

9) Braves' catcher AJ Pierzynski has 1,999 hits; he will become the 10th catcher ever to get 2,000 hits. Pretty impressive; was surprised when I heard it.

8) Mat Latos is early leader for Comeback Player of the Year; he is 4-0, 0.74 in four starts for the White Sox. In 2014-15, he was a combined 9-15, 4.16 in 37 starts for four different teams.

7) Saturday night in Las Vegas, four guys bet a cab driver $100 he wouldn't drive thru the In 'n Out Burger drive-thru lane in reverse; they lost.

6) Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale's widow, Anne Meyers, who was a great hoop player at UCLA, sold lot of her late husband's memorabilia; his 1963 and 1965 World Series rungs netted just under $200,000 combined.

5) Tanner Roark was awesome Saturday, whiffing 15 Twins in a 2-0 Washington win; he threw 121 pitches, most by any major leaguer this season.

There was a Twitter debate this weekend, where guys were talking about high school coaches having kids throw 160+ pitches in a game. No bueno.

4) Of the 183 NHL teams who trailed playoff series 3-0, only nine forced a Game 7; those nine teams went 4-5 in the Game 7.

3) Do big league teams shift too much? Some ex-players in TV booths this weekend were discussing this- their consensus seemed to be that a star pitcher like Kershaw should have veto rights over any shifts, but you have to earn the right to have veto rights over the manager. It is an interesting debate.

2) Los Angeles Clippers have never led a playoff series, 3-0. Ever.

1) Phil Simms came out and said Jared Goff is the 3rd-best QB in this week's draft; he may be right or may be wrong, but I don't give rat's ass what Simms says about QBs, despite his having been a very good player himself.
Long time ago, Simms shredded Ben Roethlisberger on Mike Francesa's Sunday radio show when Ben was a senior at Miami; he denies it now, but I remember listening to it and then laughing when Big Ben became such a good player.

Monday's NBA playoffs betting preview and odds

Is it the dancing, or is it just the fact that the Thunder are a better team? OKC has Dallas with their backs against the wall for Monday night.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will be looking to finish of their series with the Dallas Mavericks Monday night. In the other two games, the Miami Heat will attempt to go up 3-1 on the Hornets and the Clippers will work on doing the same against the Blazers.

Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets (-3, 195.5)

Heat lead series 2-1

The Miami Heat set a historic offensive pace in the first two games of their first round series before crashing back to earth in Game 3. The Charlotte Hornets will try to put together back-to-back solid defensive efforts and even the series at two wins apiece when they host the Heat in Game 4 on Tuesday.

Miami scored a franchise playoff-record 123 points in a Game 1 win and followed it up with a 115-103 triumph in Game 2, but the Hornets turned up the defense and held the Heat to 34.2 percent from the field in a 96-80 triumph on Saturday. The victory snapped a 14-year drought between playoff wins for Charlotte franchises, though the team was focusing on the future instead of the past. "This isn't about winning one playoff game, it's about winning a playoff series," Hornets coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "This gives us a chance." Miami will need to make an adjustment after Charlotte went to a bigger lineup and pushed its way to the win up front.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBATV, FSN Sun (Miami)

LINE HISTORY: The Hornets opened as 2.5-point favorites and the line was bumped up to -3 by Sunday afternoon. The total opened at 195 and was also bumped up a half point to 195.5. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE HEAT (50-35, 45-39-1 ATS, 36-48-1 O/U): Miami burned the Hornets in the first two games by putting Luol Deng at power forward but were on the receiving end of some physical play in Game 3. “They went really big and caught us off guard,” Heat center Hassan Whiteside told reporters. “We were prepared for Al Jefferson to post up, but they posted up on our guards. They got us into foul trouble, and that was tough. But we know what they do now. We know what they’re looking for and we can hone on that. Now we know what their different lineups are going to look like.” Whiteside left Saturday’s game in the fourth quarter with a quad bruise before sitting out practice on Sunday and is considered questionable for Game 4.

ABOUT THE HORNETS (49-36, 43-41-1 ATS, 42-41-2 O/U): Charlotte lost starting guard Nicolas Batum to an ankle injury in Game 2 but instead of inserting another guard into the lineup for Game 3 went big with 7-0 center Frank Kaminsky. The rookie only attempted one field goal in a combined 37 minutes in the first two games but finished with 15 points in 35 minutes in Game 3. “He just kept playing,” Clifford told reporters of Kaminsky. “He had the right attitude. Playing basketball is no different than anything else. You have the right attitude, you give yourself a chance to get going when things don’t go your way.”

Dallas Mavericks at Oklahoma City (-13.5, 205)

Thunder lead series 3-1

The third-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder will attempt to close out their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and may have to do so without All-Star small forward Kevin Durant. A flagrant 2 foul got Durant ejected late in Saturday's 119-108 road win over the sixth-seeded Mavericks and he now faces the possibility of being suspended for Game 5.

Durant was called for the flagrant 2 after trying to contest a shot by Dallas guard Justin Anderson and smacking him the rookie in the face with his forearm. "I wasn't trying to hurt him," Durant told reporters afterward. "Plenty of plays this season where I blocked shots like that from behind. Just unfortunate I fouled him over the head. It was a flagrant, even though I wasn't trying to intentionally foul him. The refs had to make a decision and they made the right one. It was just bad timing." Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is playing with a bruised knee and will be trying to keep his team alive after excelling with 27 points and eight rebounds in Game 4. "Hey, we've all got to enjoy it while we can," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said after Game 4. "We're seeing one of the most special athletes in sports history and doing it at an amazingly high level at really an advanced stage in his career."

LINE HISTORY: The Thunder opened as massive 13-point favorites for this home court elimination game, but it appears that 13 points wasn't enough for the betting public as the books bumped the line to -13.5 early Sunday morning. The total opened at 205 and hasn't moved at this point. Check out the complete line history here.

ABOUT THE MAVERICKS (43-43, 46-39-1 ATS, 41-44-1 O/U): Point guard Deron Williams (sports hernia) departed just 89 seconds into Game 4 after aggravating the injury and will miss the rest of the series. "I think he's done for the year," Carlisle told reporters. "That's what I think. I don't expect him to play in Game 5." Point guard J.J. Berea (groin) missed all seven of his shots while struggling through a scoreless Game 4 and Dallas will again rely heavily on Raymond Felton, who had 19 points and 11 assists on Saturday and is averaging 19.3 points over the past three games.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (58-28, 40-45-1 ATS, 41-45 O/U): Point guard Russell Westbrook had 25 points and 15 assists and has recorded double-doubles in all four games of the series. Westbrook scored 22 of Oklahoma City's 32 third-quarter points as he helped the Thunder maintain the quicker pace and not let the game settle into the low-scoring affair (85-84 in Game 2) that resulted in Dallas' lone victory. "The name of the game is come out and play basketball and that's what we've done the last two games, especially here," Westbrook told reporters. "We know a lot of their game is to kind of muck up the game and I think we're doing a great job of staying above it."

Los Angeles Clippers at Portland Trail Blazers (+2.5, 206.5)

Clippers lead series 2-1

The Portland Trail Blazers turned the series around at home in Game 3 and will try to even things up at two wins apiece when they host the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 4 on Monday. The Trail Blazers finally got strong performances in the same game from Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum on Saturday, which boosted their confidence moving forward.

“I knew that this game, if we would have lost this game, we would have been in some real trouble,” Lillard told reporters after the 96-88 win in Game 3. “So I just wanted to come out and leave it out there, be aggressive on the offensive end and help on the defensive end. … Just be in attack mode for 48 minutes and our entire team did that.” Lillard was a combined 13-of-39 from the floor in the first two games but knocked down 10-of-20 en route to 32 points in the return home on Saturday. The Clippers held a four-point lead with under four minutes to play in Game 3 before being outscored 15-1 the rest of the way and were disappointed in their inability to put the game away. “We really don’t want to go into these long playoff series,” Los Angeles guard J.J. Redick told reporters. “Anything can happen, as it showed last year against Houston (when the Clippers squandered a 3-1 lead). When you have a team down, and we had a four-point lead against a team we had 2-0 - we had a great opportunity to go up 3-0, and on Monday, we’ll have an opportunity to go up 3-1.”

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (55-30, 42-40-3 ATS, 34-51 O/U): Los Angeles forward Blake Griffin was one of the players talking about the team’s need to stay aggressive after going up 2-0 in the series, and he was disappointed in the team’s Game 3 effort. “They beat us in almost every facet of the game,” Griffin told reporters. “They outhustled us, they were better on the glass, they got the 50-50 balls. They had more energy. They flew around. They executed their game plan. You could tell they wanted to go early. They were tougher than us. They were more aggressive. They were tougher.” The Clippers went 3-of-18 from 3-point range in the loss and Redick was held to five points after totaling 34 in the first two contests.

ABOUT THE BLAZERS (45-40, 45-40 ATS, 44-41 O/U): Lillard and McCollum (27 points on 11-of-22 shooting) handled the bulk of the scoring in Game 3 but the best performance may have come from center Mason Plumlee, who collected six points, 21 rebounds and nine assists. “Obviously, the rebounds speak for themselves,” Portland coach Terry Stotts told reporters of Plumlee. “His playmaking, his running into screens – he had an exceptional game. The rebounding was the biggest thing because that’s been kind of a weak point for us in the series, but his passing, he’s been doing that all year for us.” The Trail Blazers outrebounded the Clippers 63-56 behind Plumlee’s big game.

Warriors face more uncertainty with Curry
April 25, 2016

HOUSTON (AP) The Golden State Warriors are facing the possibility of another playoff game without star Stephen Curry.

Curry missed the second half of a win over the Houston Rockets in Game 4 on Sunday with a sprained right knee and will have an MRI on Monday.

Curry was injured on the final play of the first half. He slid awkwardly to the court while defending and immediately grabbed his knee. He got up and looked to have trouble putting weight on it before jogging with a limp to the locker room. He came out with the team after halftime, but sat on the bench for most of the warmup time. After talking with coaches, he returned to the locker room.

It was his first game back after missing the last two games with a sprained right ankle.

''I just feel so bad for him,'' coach Steve Kerr said. ''He's been healthy all year long and now as soon as the playoffs start, and these things start happening to him.''

The Warriors made an NBA playoff record 21 3-pointers to cruise to a 121-94 victory on Sunday to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

If Curry can't go, the Warriors will look to Shaun Livingston to make a third start in his place as they try to wrap up the series on Wednesday in Oakland.

The Warriors had four players in double figures on Sunday, led by 23 from Klay Thompson.

''We got contributions from up and down the bench which was fantastic, which we're going to need as long as we are without Steph,'' Kerr said. ''Even when he gets back we're going to need them.''

Draymond Green said they'll have to bring the same intensity they had in the second half on Sunday if they hope to eliminate the Rockets in Game 5.

''We've got to come out and take the game,'' Green said. ''We have to know that Steph probably won't be playing. We can't expect that we're at home and it's a done deal.''

Thompson is certainly concerned about Curry's status but knows that they have to focus on what they have to do to win instead of feeling sorry for themselves.

''Just his presence alone on the court makes the defense gravitate to him,'' Thompson said. ''No one is going to make up what he does individually, we have to do it with five people. I honestly couldn't ask for a better backup than Shaun Livingston because of the way he controls the game. He's a mismatch for a lot of point guards.''

After his two-game layoff, Curry struggled to get going early. He was 2 of 9, including 1 of 7 on 3-pointers and had five turnovers before he was injured. He finished with six points.

''It looked like his conditioning was fine, he just couldn't get his rhythm and I thought he was trying to do too much,'' Kerr said. ''I didn't mind that he missed the shots.

''He was trying to get himself going with a lot of 3s, which is fine because the way Steph goes, sometimes he makes one and the floodgates open.''

Cavs head into 2nd round looking sharp
April 25, 2016

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) When LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers swept Boston in the first round of last year's playoffs, their championship hopes had already taken a major hit because of an injury to Kevin Love.

Not so this season. The Cavs took four straight games from Detroit - and look no worse for wear after doing it.

''We're not satisfied with what we've done, but we are happy where we are today,'' James said. ''Being able to leave out of this series, knowing that we've got 15 guys ready to go.''

James didn't even have to lead Cleveland in scoring in the series against Detroit. That honor went to Kyrie Irving, whose 31 points in the finale Sunday night lifted the Cavs to a 100-98 win over the Pistons. Cleveland will face either Atlanta or Boston in the next round.

The Cavaliers closed out another series quickly. Cleveland has taken a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series on six different occasions, and the Cavs have finished off the sweep each time.

This series ended when Detroit's Reggie Jackson missed a wild shot from 3-point range at the buzzer - with Irving hounding him defensively. Irving had made a big 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to give Cleveland a four-point lead.

''He was huge and he was aggressive - in attack mode the whole series, and that's what we needed from him,'' coach Tyronn Lue said.

Here are a few things we learned from Cleveland's 4-0 series win over the Pistons:

BIG THREE

James, Irving and Love combined to average 69 points a game in the series, an early indication of what that trio might be capable of this postseason if those three players stay healthy.

''They just put maximum pressure on the defense from Game 1 to Game 4,'' James said.

STRONG SECOND HALVES

The Pistons actually outscored the Cavs by a point in the first half over the four games, but Cleveland won the second halves by a total of 35.

Irving scored 20 of his 31 points in the second half Sunday, including a 10-point flurry near the start of the third quarter.

BENCH PLAY

In a span of 2:15 at the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth Sunday, backup Matthew Dellavedova scored 11 points. The only other Cavs player to score during that stretch was Irving, who made a halfcourt shot to end the third.

''It was a total team effort,'' Lue said.

Dellavedova also scored 12 points in Game 3.

BEYOND THE ARC

Cleveland made 57 3-pointers in the series, shooting 41 percent from long range. The Cavs attempted at least 29 3s in each game and turned Game 2 into a blowout by going 20 of 38.

James and Love were misfiring from the perimeter in Game 4, but Irving and J.R. Smith made up for that by going 9 of 18 on Sunday night.

FIRST SERIES

Lue, who took over as coach this season after David Blatt was fired, won his first playoff series without too much drama - and against a coach with plenty of postseason experience in Detroit's Stan Van Gundy.

Only Game 2 was particularly lopsided, so Cleveland had to operate under pressure late in games. The Cavs will have some time to rest before taking on either the Hawks or the Celtics.

''Each series is different,'' Lue said. ''I think our guys did a good job overall with the series. It was a great series for us and it tested us.''

Spurs ready to wait for semis after sweep

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The San Antonio Spurs know they didn't face a fair fight in the first-round of the playoffs, so they took what they could in sweeping an injury-depleted opponent.

A physical test they hope prepared them for the Western Conference semifinals.

The Spurs finished off their ninth postseason sweep in franchise history Sunday by routing the Memphis Grizzlies 116-95. Now they await either Oklahoma City or Dallas, which will offer a much tougher series than the Grizzlies, who reached the playoffs despite using an NBA-record 28 players this season.

''They fought very hard,'' Spurs guard Tony Parker said of the Grizzlies. ''Obviously, they had a lot of injuries, so it was not the same. I've had some great battles against the Grizzlies over the years in the playoffs. You just have to give a lot of credit because they tried, and it was just too hard and too many injuries.''

This was the third time the Spurs swept Memphis, including the 2004 first round and the 2013 Western Conference finals.

This series was a foregone conclusion before the first tipoff. But Spurs coach Gregg Popovich stopped on his way off the court to talk with Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph and give him a playful forearm to the chest. Popovich then complimented the Grizzlies' passion and drive for 48 minutes of each game.

''That physicality will help us I think in the next round,'' Popovich said.

Here are some things to know while the Spurs wait for their next opponent:

RESTED SPURS: With the Grizzlies so depleted by injuries, Popovich was able to take it easy on his starters. Even with Kawhi Leonard playing more than 42 minutes in Game 3, the Spurs starters still averaged fewer than 25 minutes played per game during this series. Tim Duncan, who turns 40 on Monday, played just 13:32 in Game 3 and 19 minutes in Game 4. In wrapping up the series, six reserves played at least 13 minutes, and Andre Miller was the only Spur who played who didn't score Sunday.

HITTING THE BOARDS: LaMarcus Aldridge finished the series by posting a double-double in each of the two victories in Memphis. He scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 3 and was only a point off matching those numbers Sunday. He helped the Spurs dominate Memphis in the paint, where they outrebounded the Grizzlies 41-36. Banging up against Randolph should only sharpen Aldridge for the semifinals.

The series win also provided a nice bit of redemption for Aldridge, who was with Portland last season when Memphis ousted the Trail Blazers 4-1 in the first round. Aldridge said he wasn't thinking of that right now. ''Anybody that knows me knows that I don't like to look back on things until the end of the season,'' Aldridge said. ''But I'm in the moment, and I'm enjoying the ride.''

KAWHI LEADING THE WAY: Kawhi Leonard, the two-time defensive player of the year, led the Spurs in scoring three of the four games. He also tied his postseason career-high with 32 points in Game 3. He did lead them in minutes played each game.

STAYING SHARP: The Spurs didn't play with the precision they did most of the season in going 67-15. Yet they still finished this series shooting 50 percent in Game 4. Parker wasn't sure how many practices Popovich will schedule before the next series starts. After a physical series with Memphis, Manu Ginobili is hoping for some rest first.

''I think we're due a couple days off, and then we'll have a couple good practices to get the rhythm back,'' Ginobili said. ''I think it's very important. We need it.''

SWEEPING BY PHIL: Popovich now has nine postseason sweeps in best-of-seven series, the most all-time. He broke a tie with Phil Jackson in that category.

KD says testy playoffs just part of game

DALLAS (AP) Kevin Durant suddenly, and reluctantly, found himself at the center of a conversation over whether Oklahoma City's rough-and-tumble series with Dallas was out of control.

LeBron James steadfastly believes he won't have the same problem, even though the Cleveland star was called out twice by Detroit early in a first-round matchup of division rivals that don't really like each other.

''It's just not who I am,'' James said before the Cavaliers closed out a sweep with a 100-98 win on Sunday night. ''It's not the makeup of my game to lose focus on anything. I know what the main thing is, what the main objective is to this game, so it's not hard at all.''

Durant probably thought the same thing before Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle accused him of a dirty play, and the NBA apparently agreed by giving the mild-mannered forward a technical a day after he elbowed Dallas rookie Salah Mejri in Game 3.

Then the seven-time All-Star was ejected for the first time in his playoff career over a flagrant foul that he said was inadvertent in Game 4 on Saturday night.

And he had to answer questions about swipes to the head, elbows and shoves rather than 3-pointers, rim-rattling dunks and the Thunder's commanding 3-1 lead in the series with the Mavericks.

These playoffs are no different than most. The number of flagrant fouls and technicals in the first round probably won't come close to the most since 2000, according to STATS. And it's not the first or last time for the postseason focus to shift to chippy moments.

''That's all part of the game,'' Durant said after a 119-108 win in Dallas that put Oklahoma City in position to wrap up the series Monday night at home.

''For the most part, no one's dirty. I know Carlisle and (Dallas owner) Mark Cuban want to tell you guys that. But we're just going out there and playing.''

Durant, who has been ejected once in the regular season in his career, was fined $15,000 by the NBA for his hard foul with 50 seconds remaining on another Dallas rookie in Justin Anderson, who played at the same high school as Durant in the Washington, D.C., area.

And Russell Westbrook was docked $25,000 for shouting an expletive at a fan in Dallas earlier in the second half.

There was also an altercation in front of the Oklahoma City bench in the first half, and Serge Ibaka got a technical 30 seconds after Durant's foul for elbowing Charlie Villanueva.

Still, Thunder coach Billy Donovan won't let himself get drawn into the debate over whether the series has gotten too testy.

''They've got a great gamesmanship,'' Donovan said of the Mavs, repeating a line he'd been using for three days. ''They're a veteran, savvy group that's been around, that's got a lot of pride. We've just got to keep our focus and concentration on what we've got to do each and every possession.''

In a playful exchange with a reporter from Oklahoma City before Game 4, Carlisle tried to reinforce his belief that Thunder players were the ''instigators.'' But the scene in Game 4 was bad enough that he flatly refused to discuss the topic afterward, cutting off the first question.

Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki seemed to agree with Durant.

''There were a few bad plays, but other than that I thought it was pretty clean,'' Nowitzki said, while calling Durant's foul ''unnecessary.'' ''Obviously both teams go hard and when both teams crash the glass, there are going to be confrontations.''

One thing now missing for the Mavericks and Thunder is a competitive series after Oklahoma City never trailed in both games in Dallas.

That's not a problem at the moment for the Los Angeles Clippers and Portland in a matchup of the fourth and fifth seeds in the Western Conference.

Clippers star Chris Paul got a technical in the third quarter for complaining to the refs, raising the emotions with the Trail Blazers trailing 2-1 after a 96-88 win in Game 3. The series resumes Monday night.

''I think with about 2 minutes left, it was a dead ball and I huddled the guys up and I asked, `Are y'all ready to go home? If we don't finish this out that's where we are going to be headed,''' Portland guard Damian Lillard said. ''That's the situation for us and every other team.

''This is it. Of course it's going to get a little bit chippy.''

And in the case of Mavericks-Thunder, a lot chippy. But not so much that it concerns Carlisle going into Game 5.

''The officials will handle it,'' the Dallas coach said Sunday. ''You've got to trust that the NBA is going to have a strong crew and they're going to handle that. You get deeper into a playoff series, things are more familiar. It's all part of it.''

Durant, a little surprised that he ended up as the face as of this fracas, would agree.

Eastern Conference – Game 4 (Heat lead 2-1)
Miami at Charlotte (-2 ½, 195) – 7:05 PM EST – NBATV

The Heat shot lights out in each of their first two victories over the Hornets by scoring 123 and 115 points. Miami’s offense cooled off in Saturday’s Game 3 blowout loss at Charlotte, as the Hornets used an 18-0 third quarter run to rout the Heat, 96-80 as three-point home favorites.

Miami put up 28 points in the first quarter of Game 3, but was held to 30 points over the next two quarters to suffer its loss in the opening round since 2012. Luol Deng led the Heat with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range, but Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, and Goran Dragic combined to shoot 14-of-44 from the field. The Miami bench received 15 points from rookie Josh Richardson in Game 2, but the non-starters of the Heat put up a combined 16 points in Game 3.

The Hornets didn’t shoot the ball extremely well in Game 3 by converting 39% of their field goal attempts, but picked up an impressive contribution from rookie forward Frank Kaminsky, who scored 15 points. Marvin Williams bounced back from shooting 1-for-17 in the first two losses to put up a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds on 5-of-9 shooting. Guard Kemba Walker wasn’t efficient from the floor (4-of-19), but finished with 17 points as the team converted 21-of-22 free throws (Walker 8-8).

Charlotte improved to 17-3 SU and 12-8 ATS the last 20 games at Time Warner Cable Arena, although five of those ATS losses came as a favorite of nine points or more. Steve Clifford’s team cashed their sixth ‘under’ in the last eight home contests, while all three home matchups with Miami this season have finished ‘under’ the total.

The Heat have not lost consecutive road playoff games to an Eastern Conference opponent since dropping two straight at Boston in the 2012 conference finals. Since 2012, Erik Spoelstra’s club owns a spectacular 13-2 SU and 12-3 ATS record off a playoff defeat, but the Heat have been limited to less than 100 points in seven consecutive postseason road games.

The Hornets are unsure if swingman Nicolas Batum will miss his second straight game after suffering a sprained ankle towards the end of Game 2. Charlotte is listed at +330 (Bet $100 to win $330) to win the series according to Sportsbook.ag, while Miami is still in control at -420 odds (Bet $420 to win $100) to advance to the second round.

Western Conference – Game 5 (Thunder lead 3-1)
Dallas at Oklahoma City (-13 ½, 205) – 8:05 PM EST – TNT

The Spurs became the first team to advance to the second round of the playoffs after sweeping the Grizzlies. San Antonio may know its semifinal opponent as early as Monday night if Oklahoma City can finish off Dallas, as the Thunder bounced back from a shocking Game 2 loss to grab consecutive wins at American Airlines Center.

Oklahoma City was limited to 84 points in a one-point defeat in Game 2 last week, but Billy Donovan’s squad picked up the offense in Dallas by scoring 131 points in Game 3, followed by a 119-point effort on Saturday. The Thunder held off the Mavericks, 119-108 to cash as 8 ½-point favorites in Game 4, while eclipsing the ‘over’ of 203 ½. The usual suspects of Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant combined to score 44 points, but OKC received a 28-point effort off the bench from Enes Kanter on an incredible 12-of-13 shooting from the floor.

The health of the Mavericks is deteriorating by the day as point guard Deron Williams lasted less than two minutes before leaving Game 4 with a sports hernia. Williams has been bothered by that injury throughout the series, while fellow guard J.J. Barea was scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting off the bench for Dallas. The Mavericks managed to shoot 52% from the field in the loss, as Dirk Nowitzki scored a team-high 27 points to bust the 20-point mark for the first time in the series.

The Thunder have covered three of four games in this series, including Game 1 as a 12-point favorite as all three victories by OKC have come by at least 11 points. Oklahoma City has covered seven of its past nine games overall, while compiling a 6-4 ATS record as a double-digit home favorite since January. Since 2012, the Thunder have won and covered in six of eight opportunities to close out a series, including a 3-1 SU/ATS mark at home.

In two road elimination games since winning the championship in 2011, the Mavericks haven’t fared very well. In 2014, Dallas was blown out in Game 7 at San Antonio, 119-96, while the Mavericks lost to the Rockets last season in the opening round, 103-94.

Western Conference – Game 4 (Clippers lead 2-1)
Los Angeles (-2 ½, 206 ½) at Portland – 10:35 PM EST – TNT

The Clippers jumped out to a 2-0 series advantage over the Blazers following a pair of 20+ point victories at Staples Center. Portland crept back into the series by holding Los Angeles to below 100 points for the first time in the series in Saturday’s 96-88 triumph at the Moda Center as 1 ½-point underdogs.

The dynamic duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum finally got their shooting in order as they combined for 59 points on 21-of-42 from the floor in Game 3. McCollum put up 25 points total in the first two games of this series before scoring 27 points on Saturday, while Lillard improved his scoring average to 30.0 points per game in seven career home playoff games. Portland outrebounded Los Angeles, 56-44 in Game 3, thanks to Mason Plumlee grabbing 21 rebounds in the victory.

The Clippers struggled from three-point range by knocking down 3-of-18 attempts from downtown, including a 2-of-7 effort from Chris Paul. The Clippers’ All-Star guard paced the Clippers with 26 points, while Jamal Crawford chipped in 19 points off the bench, but Los Angeles was limited to 41% shooting from the floor. Los Angeles dropped to 5-12 in their past 17 road playoff games, including four consecutive losses since the second round of the 2015 postseason.

Doc Rivers’ squad closed out last postseason with a 7-1 mark to the ‘over’ in their final eight games, but have finished ‘under’ the total in all three contests against the Blazers. Portland has gone the opposite way from a totals perspective since the second round of the 2014 playoffs by going ‘under’ the total in eight of the past 10 postseason contests.

Since the Blazers took a 2-0 series lead over the Rockets in the opening round of the 2014 playoffs, Portland has put together a dreadful 3-13-1 ATS record in the last 17 postseason contests, including a 3-5 ATS mark at the Moda Center. Terry Stotts’ team is 0-4 SU/ATS the last four playoff games off a home win since 2014 with three of the losses coming by double-digits.
