    3-pointer: Hopeless/Hopeful

It’s the time of year where NBA teams are starting to drop like flies. Unless you’re following LeBron James’ lead and locking in on the mission ahead, gearing up for the postseason, odds are your brain starts to shift into vacation mode.

In this week’s 3-pointer, we’ll break down the hopeless, hopeful and those on cruise control.

    Hopeless

How about those Lakers? They’re 52 games back of Golden State in the Pacific Division and appear to be a lock to finish with the second-worst record in the NBA, improving their chances of keeping this year’s draft choice, which would otherwise go to Phoenix if it doesn’t end up top-three. Beyond a proper send-off for the legendary Kobe Bryant, you know L.A. isn’t interested in finishing strong.

In fact, they’re currently interested in avoiding implosion. According to ESPN, D’Angelo Russell pulled a stunt where he videotaped Nick Young without his knowledge, shedding light on his indiscretions in spite of being engaged to rapper Iggy Azalea. You can’t make this type of things up if you tried, but it’s apparently bled into the fabric of an already bad team, leading to him being ostracized by many teammates. Russell, dealing with a sprained ankle, shot 2-for-11 in Monday’s 123-75 loss to Utah and has only dished out three assists in the last three games. The Lakers enter Wednesday’s contest against Miami as owners of four consecutive double-digit losses.

By comparison, the 76ers have been very competitive over the past week or so, covering in tight losses at Denver, Portland and Golden State before falling by 15 points and failing to cash against Charlotte at home. They’re looking for a 10th win that will help the franchise avoid tying the 1972-73 group’s record for futility (9-73), but aren’t likely to get it this week given a road date with the surging Hornets in addition to a home game with Indiana.

Beware of those massive point spreads – surrendering double-digits at home is rarely a good look -- but understand that there are some teams who will be no-shows over the final two weeks. The Pelicans have already shelved Anthony Davis the rest of the way due to knee issue and have declared Ryan Anderson’s injury a sports hernia. Jrue Holiday’s toe trouble and Alonzo Gee’s knee injury have been deemed season-ending. With Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans out, the Pelicans lost three games by a combined 46 points before Monday’s home win over the Knicks.

The Bucks had a surge when initially putting the ball in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s hands as the point forward, but enter the week on a five-game losing streak they’ll take into a March 30 home date against Phoenix. With Orlando and Chicago coming into town, they have an opportunity to string a few wins together, but are currently right there with the Knicks and Magic vying to avoid the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Whispers over players tuning out Scott Skiles in Orlando has him facing an important week considering their next four games are winnable, but it remains to be seen whether the team is going to play out the string. There have been positive signs in blowouts of the Bulls (111-89) and Nets (139-105), but a team that’s been besieged by injuries needs to finish strong to inspire home for next year. The Magic will have a lot of cap space to attract upper-tier free agents and will want a stable environment in place.

    Hopeful

Chicago looked dreadful in that loss in Central Florida, digging itself a major hole in its quest to make the playoffs. The Bulls then lost at home to Atlanta before being rescued by Jimmy Butler in Indiana on Tuesday. Now at .500 with eight games to go, they’ve at least given themselves a chance by surviving at the Pacers. Butler, Pau Gasol and Derrick Rose have all been banged up but have made it back into the lineup. Where they go from here will depend on how well those three play over the next few weeks, which essentially means the postseason has started early for this group. Fred Hoiberg has lamented his inability to reach his players of late, as they’ve suffered lopsided losses in a home-and-home against the Knicks before being throttled in Orlando. They’ll go to Houston on Thursday for one of the more meaningful games of the week.

Washington also finds themselves on the outside looking in, underachieving under Randy Wittman again. The Wizards have only eight games left after coming up short at the Warriors, so being two games under .500, leaves them with little room for error if they’re to catch Indiana or Detroit for No. 8. Their fate will likely be decided on the West Coast road trip they’re currently embarked upon, which started with a win over the Lakers and continued in Golden State on Tuesday. Games against the Kings, Suns and Clippers will all be winnable if they’re playing well, but coming up empty could put them too far behind the pace to take advantage of a favorable looking closing slate that features a pair of games against lowly Brooklyn.

The Western Conference is tightly packed, as Memphis continues to hang on to No. 5 and Portland has separated itself some from the group that includes Utah, Houston and Dallas. Each of those teams had playoff aspirations entering the season, but one will find themselves home watching when the postseason begins. The Rockets are currently hanging on at No. 8, coming back from 19 points down at halftime in Cleveland to rally past the LeBron James-less Cavs, but can’t get comfortable with Chicago and OKC up next. The Rockets travel to Dallas for a huge game on April 6, so it will be interesting to see where the Mavericks are entering that encounter since they’ll face the Knicks, Pistons and Timberwolves next, doing so with Chandler Parsons done for the season and Deron Williams looking to return from an abdominal strain.

It would definitely appear that the Jazz are in better shape than the Mavs or Rockets, as they have dates with the Timberwolves, Suns, Nuggets and Lakers remaining, not to mention a key home game with Dallas on April 11. One team they’ll deal with that doesn’t sound like a favorable matchup is Golden State, who comes into town Wednesday.

The Warriors have already defeated Utah three times, but aren’t likely to rest guys on the second night of a back-to-back since their pursuit of 73 wins has them tackling every game like a must-win. We’ll see whether that catches up to them in May and June, but for now they’re still in this hopeful category, looking at every game as one they’ll pull out all the stops to win.

    Cruising

San Antonio has already gone into conservation mode, with Gregg Popovich resting players wherever he sees fit. It will be interesting to see whether Pop shows his hand against the Warriors, since although both of their remaining meetings are involved in back-to-backs, both will be the first leg of one. It would be surprising to see the Spurs play any game for the remainder of the regular season at full strength.

LeBron and Kevin Durant each sat Tuesday as both feel comfortable with their current place in the standings. Although the Cavs are still in jeopardy of being caught by Toronto, James is taking care of his body first and foremost, assuring people that he feels healthier than he has in years at this stage of the season. Watching teammates Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love implode in surrendering a massive lead in a nationally-televised home game against the Rockets on Tuesday had to be frustrating, but it does help his case that things must be done his way in order to emerge victorious. Cleveland is now 1-3 in games where James doesn’t play and will undoubtedly get a few more cracks without him as April rolls around.

    Friday's Tip Sheet
    April 1, 2016

Mavericks at Pistons – 7:35 PM EST

Seven games remain for Dallas (37-38 SU, 40-34-1 ATS), who moved into tie for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff race after Utah and Houston each lost at home the last two nights. The Mavericks rebounded from a three-game losing streak to win each of their past two contests against the Nuggets and Knicks. Dallas’ defense stepped up by allowing 88 points to Denver and 89 points to New York, as the Mavericks own a 9-1-1 ATS record when giving up less than 100 points in a game as an underdog.

Detroit (40-35 SU, 38-35-2 ATS) is seeking its first playoff berth since 2009, sitting one game ahead of Indiana for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons close out their nine-game homestand after holding off the short-handed Thunder on Tuesday, 88-82 as two-point favorites. Stan Van Gundy’s team has won six of the first eight contests on this homestand with both losses coming to the Hawks, but four of the victories came against non-playoff squads Sacramento, Milwaukee, Orlando, and Brooklyn. The Pistons have lost each of the last four home meetings with the Mavericks, but did knock off Dallas at the American Airlines Center as two-point underdogs on March 9.

Cavaliers at Hawks – 8:05 PM EST

These teams have met just once since Cleveland swept Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals last May. Back in November, the Cavaliers (53-22 SU, 33-39-3 ATS) cruised past the Hawks as 5 ½-point home favorites, 109-97 for the fifth straight win in the series as Cleveland holds a 2 ½-game advantage over Toronto heading into tonight’s action. The Cavaliers bounced back from Tuesday’s meltdown against the Rockets to rout Brooklyn on Thursday, 107-87 as 17-point favorites. LeBron James put together one of his most efficient games of the season by scoring 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, while dishing out 11 assists to equal last season’s win total of 53 with seven games to go.

Atlanta (45-31 SU, 40-35-1 ATS) returns home from a 2-1 road trip after falling at Toronto on Tuesday, 105-97 to snap a four-game away winning streak. The Hawks have won seven of their last eight games at Philips Arena, while cashing the ‘under’ six times during this stretch with six opponents scoring 98 points or less. Since a three-game losing streak to start the second half, Atlanta has compiled a 13-5 ATS record the past 18 contests, including a 6-2 ATS mark at home.

Raptors at Grizzlies – 8:05 PM EST

It was a rocky end to March for Toronto (50-24 SU, 40-34 ATS), who ended the month at 2-3 following a 9-2 start. The Raptors lost by double-digits to the Celtics and Thunder, but bounced back by beating the Hawks for the third time this season, 105-97 as one-point home favorites on Wednesday. Dwane Casey’s club has finished ‘over’ the total in four straight games, while playing its final two Western Conference opponents of the regular season the next two nights with a trip to San Antonio on Saturday. The Raptors cruised past the Grizzlies in February, 98-85 as eight-point favorites to beat Memphis for the fourth time in the last five matchups.

Memphis (41-34 SU, 39-35-1 ATS) is looking to keep hold of the fifth spot in the Western Conference playoff race with Portland creeping up. The Grizzlies have spiraled out of control recently due to injuries, but Dave Joerger’s squad is 2-8 SU and 4-6 ATS the last 10 games, while coming off back-to-back home losses to the Spurs and Nuggets. Memphis has lost four of its past six games at FedEx Forum, as the Grizzlies have cashed the ‘over’ five times in this stretch. The Grizzlies have put together an impressive 10-3 mark at home against Eastern Conference foes with three losses coming to Cleveland, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

Heat at Kings – 10:05 PM EST

Miami (43-31 SU, 39-34-1 ATS) continues its three-game West Coast swing after getting tripped up by the discombobulated Lakers in overtime on Wednesday, 102-100. The Heat failed to cover as a road favorite for the fifth time in 17 tries this season, while losing for the fourth time in the last six games away from South Florida. Miami sits one game behind Atlanta for the top spot in the Southeast division, as the second place team will likely finish fourth in the East, setting up for a potential matchup with Cleveland in the second round of the playoffs.

The Kings (30-45 SU, 34-40-1 ATS) will be without leading scorer DeMarcus Cousins tonight after the All-Star center was suspended for picking up his 16th technical foul of the season. Sacramento won its third straight game at Sleep Train Arena in Wednesday’s 120-111 victory over fading Washington. The Kings own a 5-6 ATS record without Cousins in the lineup this season, while Sacramento is facing Miami for the second time this season with the ex-Kentucky star suspended. The Kings cashed as 10-point underdogs at Miami in a 116-109 loss in mid-November, as the Heat go for their fourth win in the last five visits to Sleep Train Arena.

Celtics at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

Golden State (68-7 SU, 41-32-2 ATS) sits five wins shy of breaking Chicago’s record for victories in a season after rallying past Utah on Wednesday in overtime, 103-96 to cash as 4 ½-point favorites. The Warriors are riding a six-game winning streak since losing at San Antonio on March 19, as Steve Kerr’s team begins a four-game homestand with a 36-0 record at Oracle Arena on the line. Golden State has failed to cash in each of its last three home victories, all as a double-digit favorite against Dallas, Philadelphia, and Washington.

The Celtics (43-32 SU, 39-35-1 ATS) play the fourth game on a five-game West Coast swing following a 116-109 setback at Portland last night as three-point underdogs. Boston fell to 0-7 SU/ATS as an underdog since the All-Star break, while owning a dreadful 2-9 ATS mark in the last 11 road contests. The last time the Celtics and Warriors met up at TD Garden in mid-December, Golden State outlasted Boston in overtime, 124-119 to pick up its fifth straight win in the series. The C’s have seen success at Oracle Arena recently from a pointspread standpoint by covering in the last two visits as double-digit ‘dogs.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the home run title this baseball season........

7-1-- Giancarlo Stanton-- Someone's fantasy team needs him healthy this year.

15-2-- Chris Davis-- Was smart re-signing with Orioles; loves Camden Yards.

17-2-- Jose Abreu-- Has lot more protection in lineup this season.

12-1- Bryce Harper-- Has a new manager this year, Dusty Baker.

13-1-- JD Martinez-- Hit three homers that don't count yesterday.

18-1-- Nolan Arenado-- How many taters would Stanton hit in Denver?

      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Happy April Fools' Day........

      13) On Selection Sunday, someone in NCAA headquarters confused Southern Cal with South Carolina (both USC) and texted South Carolina that they had made the NCAA tournament, when in fact they had not. No bueno. Wouldn't have wanted to be the person who had to explain that miscue to the Gamecocks.

      12) Oklahoma plays Villanova Saturday, but on Tuesday, they'll be down a couple of assistant coaches. Steve Henson goes to Tex-San Antonio, Lew Hill to Rio Grande Valley in the Southland Conference. Thats the price of winning.

      11) The Final Four is at NRG Stadium in Houston, a dome where the Texans play their NFL games. In the last 13 basketball games played there, favorites are 11-2 vs the spread, under is 8-4-1.

      10) Over last 30 years, teams with an 8-seed or worse are 1-3-1 vs spread in national semifinal games, when not playing against each other.

      9) Over last 30 years, when teams from same conference meet in national semifinals, the better team won/covered three of the four games.

      8) George Washington 76, Valparaiso 60-- GW wins the NIT, but they shouldn't get too happy; the coach who won last year's NIT has already been fired. Stanford fired Johnny Dawkins, who has already resurfaced at Central Florida.

      Switching over to baseball..........
      7) Travis Shaw beats out Pablo Sandoval as 3B in Boston. Sandoval showed up to spring training more out of shape than usual, and now he will sit.

      6) As far as I know, Mike Leake (#8), Marcus Stroman (#6) are only major league starting pitchers with a single digit uniform number. Reliever Adam Ottavino also wears 0 for the Rockies.

      5) They put 11,025 fans in Cashman Field in Las Vegas last night for a Mets-Cubs game, listed as a sellout. They have another exhibition game there this afternoon.

      4) Bronx TV analyst David Cone joined Royals analyst Rex Hudler in blaming Ruben Tejada for the broken leg Tejada incurred when Chase Utley slid hard into second base in LY's playoffs. Angels' analyst Mark Gubicza took the opposite viewpoint, so apparently the slide is kid of a gray area, even amongst ex-players.

      3) Bronx reliever Andrew Miller suffered a chip fracture in his right (non-throwing) wrist when he got hit by a line drive Thursday. With Aroldis Chapman suspended for the first 30 games, Bronx doesn't need Miller on the DL in April.

      2) Jockey Calvin Borel retired this week, with 5,136 wins, a great career.

      1) I felt so old Thursday; I'm getting my hair buzzed, doesn't take too long, but while I'm there, an ad for comedian Steven Wright's appearance in Albany comes on the radio. Neither of the girls working in the hair salon know who he is. Wright is a brilliant comedian with a deadpan delivery- he also won an Oscar as a film producer; he is a brilliant guy, very funny, but at age 60, he's not well known by younger people. Oy.

                  Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win next week's Masters golf tournament........

13-2-- Jason Day- Won six of last 13 tournaments he played in.

                  8-1-- Jordan Spieth/Rory McIlroy

10-1-- Bubba Watson-- Lefties seem to do well at Augusta National.

                  12-1-- Adam Scott

                  15-1-- Phil Mickelson/Rickie Fowler

                  20-1- Dustin Johnson

                  **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

                  13) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Rush Limbaugh, which pretty much sums up what a lot of people are thinking about politics these days:

"I don't know what to do here today ....... I mean, if you want a campaign slogan for 2016, it would be, 'Everybody sucks.'"

                  12) Bernie Sanders raised $108.8M in the first three months of 2016; this guy might still be campaigning after the election is over. A 74-year old Socialist raised $109M in three months-- what an indictment of every other person in this Presidential race.

                  11) Was talking to a friend of mine the other day who said, "It doesn't matter. They're all liars." Sad but true sentiment, thats how we view our nation's "leaders".

                  10) CNBC's Andrea Mitchell did some fact-checking: Hillary Clinton banked $300M in contributions from oil/gas companies, Sanders, Sanders $53M.

On to stuff I like better and know more about.......
                  9) Memphis Grizzlies set an NBA record by using 28 players this year; funny thing is, they're probably going to make the playoffs anyway- you'd figure a team with that much turnover would be falling apart. Nice coaching job by Dave Joerger.

                  8) The average fan would be surprised by how little yelling/shouting goes on in locker rooms before basketball games and at halftime. Halftime is short; adjustments are made, guys get hydrated, there is only so much yelling a coach can do over the course of a long season before the players stop listening.

                  7) People bet on spring training games, but in some games, an AL team might use the DH, while the NL team in same game has its pitchers hit. Small advantage there. If a team doesn't care whether it wins/loses, I'd be hesitant to bet on that game.

                  6) Basketball coaching carousel: Jim Engles bolts from NJIT to Columbia. Detroit let Ray McCallum go; Titans hadn't been same since Ray McCallum Jr played there. Portland named former Pistons coach Terry Porter its new head coach.

                  5) Texas Longhorns turned down a chance for another trip to China next fall, in order to play in a tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn with Northwestern, Notre Dame and Colorado. Pretty good tournament.

                  4) If you bring your cellphone into The Masters at Augusta National, you're likely to get tossed and then banned for life from the golf course. Banned for life seems a bit harsh, but they're pretty serious about having no phones on the course.

                  3) Maryland's football team lost defensive coordinator Scott Shafer, who resigned for personal reasons before he ever coached a game for the Terps. Shafer was the head coach at Syracuse the last three seasons.

                  2) Nevada 85, Morehead State 82 OT-- wins CBI championship. Not too fond of the best-of-3 finals format, but these teams played really good games.

                  1) Knicks 105, Nets 91-- Nice of the NBA to have the Lopez brothers play each other on April 1, which happens to be the twins' birthday.

                            Saturday's Tip Sheet
                            April 2, 2016

                            Pacers at 76ers – 7:05 PM EST

Indiana (39-36 SU, 36-38-1 ATS) hits the road for a pair of games the next two days against a pair of non-playoff teams. Before heading to New York on Sunday, the Pacers look to beat the 76ers for the third time this season. Indiana routed Philadelphia as 15-point home favorites on March 21 by a 91-75 count, as all five Pacers’ starters scored in double-figures. Frank Vogel’s team is coming off a pair of ugly home losses in different fashion, blowing a seven-point third quarter lead to a struggling Chicago squad, while falling behind early in a 114-94 setback to Orlando on Thursday.

It’s been a while since Philadelphia (9-67 SU, 35-40-1 ATS) last won a game, as the 76ers look to snap an 11-game losing streak. The Sixers play with no rest after falling at Charlotte last night, 100-91, but managed the cover as 14-point underdogs. Brett Brown’s club has put together an impressive 4-1 ATS record the last five contests, but has failed to cash in each of its last two home losses to the Celtics and Hornets. Philadelphia is on one of the top ‘under’ streaks currently by finishing ‘under’ the total in six consecutive games.

Pistons at Bulls – 8:05 PM EST

he race for the final two spots in the Eastern Conference has come down to three Central division teams. Even though Washington is still hanging around, Detroit, Indiana, and Chicago are all vying for the seventh and eighth playoff positions heading into the final two weeks of the season. The Pistons (40-36 SU, 38-36-2 ATS) ended their nine-game homestand with a thud on Friday, falling to the banged-up Mavericks at home, 98-89 as 5 ½-point favorites. After scoring a bunch of points against several non-playoff teams, Detroit was limited to 95 points or less in each of the past three games, resulting in three straight ‘unders.’

For as much drama as Chicago (38-37 SU, 32-43 ATS) has dealt with this season, the Bulls have put themselves in a position to qualify for the playoffs with seven games remaining. Chicago begins Saturday’s action one game behind Indiana for the final playoff spot in the East, as Fred Hoiberg’s team is coming off a pair of huge road victories against the Pacers and Rockets. The Bulls are riding a five-game ‘under’ streak, while looking to grab the series split with the Pistons as both losses to Detroit this season came in overtime.

Raptors at Spurs – 8:35 PM EST

Toronto (51-24 SU, 40-35 ATS) escaped past Memphis last night, 99-95, but failed to cover as 5 ½-point favorites. The Raptors failed to reach the 100-point mark (barely) for just the second time in the last 18 games, but the dynamic backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry combined to score 49 points to give Toronto the season sweep of Memphis. Dwane Casey’s squad owns an impressive 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS mark in the last seven road games with no rest since mid-December, although they are 1-1 SU/ATS as an underdog in this stretch.

The Spurs (63-12 SU, 43-32 ATS) are the only team yet to lose a game at home this season after the Warriors were tripped up by the Celtics on Friday. San Antonio looks to improve to a 39-0 at home as its final three games at the AT&T Center come against division leaders Toronto, Golden State, and Oklahoma City. Gregg Popovich’s team has put together a 3-6 ATS record in its last nine home victories, while failing to cover as heavy 19-point favorites in Wednesday’s 100-92 victory over New Orleans. The Spurs are playing with revenge after losing at Toronto in early December, 97-94, as the Raptors shot a blistering 58% from the floor.

Kings at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

The only game involving a pair of non-playoff teams on the Saturday card won’t showcase several key players as center DeMarcus Cousins and point guard Rajon Rondo will sit for Sacramento (30-46 SU, 35-40-1 ATS). The Kings rallied to pick up a cover as 6 ½-point underdogs in Friday’s 112-106 home defeat to the Heat, the fifth straight ATS win for Sacramento. This is the second time in a week that both Rondo and Cousins will sit on the second end of a back-to-back, as Sacramento fell at Portland on Monday, 105-93, but cashed as 13-point underdogs.

Denver (32-45 SU, 40-35-2 ATS) is playing with double-revenge against Sacramento after losing a home-and-home set immediately following the All-Star break. Both games eclipsed the ‘over,’ as the Nuggets lost by six and four points in spite of scoring 110 points in each defeat. Denver plays its next four games at the Pepsi Center, coming off a 101-95 setback to New Orleans on Thursday as seven-point favorites, as Mike Malone’s club fell to 1-3 ATS the last four games in the favorite role.

Heat at Blazers – 10:05 PM EST

The three-team race atop the Southeast division has turned into a good one down the stretch with the Heat and Hornets sitting percentage points ahead of the Hawks. Miami (44-31 SU, 39-35-1 ATS) held off Sacramento on Friday, 112-106 to pick up its third victory in the last four games, while bouncing back from a tough overtime loss to the Lakers on Wednesday. Dwyane Wade sat out last night’s victory with back and neck injuries, as his status is listed as doubtful for tonight. The Heat go for the season sweep of the Blazers after beating Portland at the American Airlines Arena in late December, 116-109 as five-point favorites.

Portland (40-36 SU, 42-34 ATS) rallied past Boston on Thursday to creep closer towards the fifth seed in the Western Conference playoff race. The Blazers sit one game behind the Grizzlies heading into tonight’s action, looking to finish off a perfect 4-0 homestand before traveling to Golden State on Sunday. Portland covered for the second time in six games against Boston, while snapping a four-game ‘under’ streak in Thursday’s 116-109 triumph. Since losing to Atlanta on January 20, the Blazers have won seven of their past eight home games against Eastern Conference foes, while going 5-1 ATS as a single-digit favorite.
