Blueprint for a daunting task: How to beat Golden State
    April 2, 2016

So now it's official. Not only can the Golden State Warriors lose this season, they can even lose at home.

Boston pulled off the surprise Friday night, going into Oracle Arena and stunning the reigning NBA champions 109-106. Even with the loss, Golden State - still 68-8 on the season - remains on pace to top the 72-10 mark set by the Chicago Bulls in the 1995-96 season for the best record in NBA history.

It was Golden State's first loss in its last 55 home regular-season games.

''It takes a lot out of you,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after the loss in Oakland, California, ''especially when every game is the other team's biggest game. People are coming after us.''

There are some factors to take into account, of course. The Warriors are still without Andre Iguodala because of an ankle injury, and lost center Andrew Bogut in the second half Friday with a rib injury. And Friday's game was Golden State's 24th in of 42 days since the All-Star break. So it's a safe bet fatigue entered the equation as well.

''You've got to tip your hat to them,'' Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas said.

Still, there are trends from the eight losses that might serve as a blueprint for those teams trying to beat the Warriors in the looming postseason.

    Here's a look:

And Friday's game was Golden State's 24th in of 42 days since the All-Star break. So it's a safe bet fatigue entered the equation as well.

''You've got to tip your hat to them,'' Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas said.

Still, there are trends from the eight losses that might serve as a blueprint for those teams trying to beat the Warriors in the looming postseason.

    Here's a look:

    ---

    CHECKING KLAY

In the Warriors' losses, Stephen Curry (who has played in seven of them, sitting out the other with injury) has been his typical MVP-level self. He's averaged 28 points, 5.7 assists and 5.6 rebounds in the games where he's played and Golden State has been beaten.

So obviously, he's not exactly getting shut down.

But keeping the other ''Splash Brother'' in check has proved vital to opponents.

Klay Thompson's numbers in Golden State's eight defeats have been, by his standards, plebian. He's shooting 39 percent in losses, 23 percent from 3-point range, averaging just 3.5 rebounds and 2 assists as well.

In Golden State's wins, of which he's appeared in 66, Thompson is shooting 48 percent, 45 percent from 3-point range. And when he makes more than half his shots, the Warriors are 24-1.

Thompson's line in the loss to Boston: 6 for 16 from the floor, and only three points despite playing the entire fourth quarter.

    ---

    DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY

When the Warriors get a double-digit lead, they win.

That's automatic, at least this season. There have been 63 in which the Warriors led by 10 points or more. They're 63-0 in those games, though some of them have certainly been highly eventful down the stretch.

On Friday, Boston's biggest deficit was midway through the second quarter when it trailed by seven points.

That's the largest one successfully overcome by a Golden State opponent all season, with the other leads that the Warriors lost in their first seven defeats being three, two, six, three, two, five and three points, respectively.

The other critical thing Boston handled was not giving up a big run. Golden State's top unanswered spurts were a pair of 6-0 runs, one at the start of each half.

    ---

    OFF NIGHTS (ALMOST) REQUIRED

Boston did what almost no one has this season. The Celtics beat Golden State on a night when the Warriors weren't having what could be described as an ''off'' shooting night.

The Warriors made 46 percent of their shots. Going into the game, Golden State had been 56-1 this season when shooting that well from the floor.

When the Warriors are off, they've been doomed. Luckily for them, it doesn't happen often. When shooting less than 41 percent, Golden State is 2-6 this season.

Also, if the Warriors go up to 50 percent shooting, they win. They've won their last 66 games when making at least half their shots, including playoffs. The last time they shot 50 percent in a loss was Nov. 11, 2014 - against San Antonio.

    ---

    WIN THE HALF

Getting the halftime lead has been a prerequisite to beating the Warriors.

Boston was up only 45-43, but a lead is a lead - and the numbers say that if the Celtics didn't have even that slight margin, they would have lost.

Golden State is 60-0 when leading at halftime. When the Warriors trail at the break, they are a mere 8-8.

    ---

    SLOW IT DOWN

Last and possibly deservedly least, because it's far easier said than done, would be this tip: Slow them down.

    Many have tried.

    Most have failed.

But when the Warriors don't score 100 points - though this rule didn't apply Friday - they're 1-5 this season. When they reach the century mark, they're 67-3. And when they get to 111 points, they're a perfect 53-0.

          Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Villanova 95, Oklahoma 51-- Discouraging tank job by the Sooners.

-- You have to wonder if two Oklahoma assistant coaches getting head coaching jobs elsewhere during the week affected this game. Maybe not, but still......

-- North Carolina 83, Syracuse 66-- Good to play a 10-seed in national semis.

-- 49ers are going to trade Colin Kaepernick to Denver. What will they get back?

-- AJ Pollock broke his elbow sliding into home plate Friday. Big loss for Arizona.

-- Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech are both pursing Valparaiso coach Bryce Drew.

          **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Brief look at all the AL teams......

Orioles-- From 1998--2011, O's were under .500 every year. Under Showalter, they're 62 games over .500 since '12, thats what a great manager Showalter is. Adding Mark Trumbo should help, but their starting pitching is shaky.

Red Sox-- Shaw beat out Sandoval at 3B; Boston owes Sandoval $72.6M over next four years. Next year he'll be the DH with Ortiz retiring. They also owe Rusney Castillo $60M over next five years and he doesn't start. Adding Price/Kimbrel elevates the pitching.

White Sox-- Added Frazier/Lawrie to give Abreu protection in lineup; LaRoche retired after hitting .207. Sox are 62 games under .500 last three years-- manager Ventura somehow kept his job. 37-year old SS Rollins takes over from departed Ramirez; not sure that is an upgrade.

Indians-- One article this spring said Tribe has best rotation in big leagues. Kluber went from 18-9 in '14 to 9-16 LY; he gave up eight more HRs (22-14) LY. Francona has been over .500 all three years in Cleveland, but win totals also decreased last two years.

Tigers-- Over next four years, Detroit has $226M wrapped up in Verlander, Cabrera; when Mike Pelfrey is your #4 starter (they dealt Price LY), pitching is a concern. Justin Upton takes over in LF, Anthony Gose in CF- they've regressed a little.

Astros-- Over last four years, no Astro has played more than 105 games in any season at 1B; White beat out fellow prospect Reed at 1B this spring. Houston's 1-3 hitters are all 26 or younger, but three of five starting pitchers are 31+, with McCullers on DL.

Royals-- World Champs have new RF in rookie Fuentes, who was 5-33 in '13 cameo with San Diego. Four of five starting pitchers are 30+. LY, seven Royals were represented by Scott Boras, and their payroll went up $20M. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Angels-- Big $$$ team made playoffs once in last six years, were swept that one year- they've paid $852,409,866 in salaries since its last playoff win. Improved left side of infield, adding pair of SSs in Escobar/Simmons, but who will play LF?

Twins--Went 83-79 LY, first winning season since 2010; they were in playoffs three times in last decade, but got swept 3-0 in all three series. Payroll jumped $23M LY- they signed Korean DH Park this winter. have several versatile players; who will play SS?

Bronx-- Made playoffs 18 of last 21 years, but won World Series once since 2000; Bronx fans have to be wondering why owners sit back and don't make many moves, while fans get charged big $$$ to watch a team that is only 26 games over .500 last three years. Payroll spent since last World Series title: $1,273,295,558.

A's-- Bottom fell out LY, going 68-94 after three straight playoff years. Need quality starting pitching, guys who can be depended upon to 6+ innings every game- takes strain off bullpen. Oakland should score more runs this year; they've fortified the bullpen, Doubront was supposed to be #5 starter, but hurt arm Saturday.

Mariners-- New GM, new manager after going 437-535 in previous six seasons; Cano played hurt LY, should rebound this year, but after Felix/Iwakuma, how good is their rotation? Felix Hernandez has pitched 200+ innings last eight years, 190+ two years before that, so he is as dependable a pitcher as there is in the majors.

Rays-- Always do more with less; LY was second time they ever had a payroll higher than $75M, but they've been under .500 last two years, after making playoffs four of last six years. Two games in Montreal this weekend drew 106,000; could Rays relocate?

Rangers-- Been 12+ games over .500 five of last six years, came so close to winning World Series when Washington was manager. Payroll was $141M+ LY; it was $92M+ in 2011, so new owners are stepping up with financial support. Six of nine projected starters are 30+ years old, so future is now in Arlington.

Blue Jays-- This is first time since 1970 no Canadian teams will be in Stanley Cup playoffs, so focus will be on Jays early on, and the expectations are very high north of border. Jays made playoffs LY for first time since 1993; how good is rotation with Price gone?

With 2 games vs Warriors this week, how will Spurs play it?
                                April 4, 2016

The biggest mystery surrounding the Golden State Warriors' run at history is how motivated San Antonio will be to stop it.

The NBA's two best teams this season will meet twice this week, perhaps the biggest remaining obstacles to the Warriors' quest for an NBA-record 73 victories.

Or, the Spurs might decide not to be much of an obstacle at all.

With less than two weeks until the playoffs and the Spurs (64-12) all but locked into the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, coach Gregg Popovich has already begun resting his players on occasion. So it's impossible to predict who will be in uniform for San Antonio when it travels to Golden State on Thursday, or hosts the Warriors (69-8) on Sunday.

''It doesn't matter, to me, how he plays it,'' Kerr said of Popovich, one of his former coaches. ''His team is a little older than ours, too.''

Kerr said the younger Warriors told him they don't feel they need a rest, but Popovich doesn't exactly give his players the option. When he made LaMarcus Aldridge sit out one of his first practices with the team in October, Popovich joked that he told the All-Star forward, ''Welcome to the Spurs.''

The Spurs will be opening a back-to-back Thursday in Oakland, so Popovich figures to sit some regulars either that night or Friday in Denver. San Antonio is then off until the Warriors visit, and follows that game with another night off before hosting Oklahoma City.

San Antonio will be 39-0 at home when Golden State arrives, two victories from becoming the first team in NBA history to go undefeated at home for an entire season. That could motivate the Spurs to make everyone available - and leave Kerr as the one who might play the rest card.

The Warriors will be playing for the second straight night after a game in Memphis, and Kerr said he may give reserve guard Shaun Livingston one of those games off.

''Other than that, we have a lot of young guys who have no reason to sit out because they're feeling great,'' Kerr said.

Elsewhere in the NBA this week:

                                TAKE THE NIGHT OFF:
There are no games on the schedule Monday for the NCAA championship game. Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve are the only other nights during the season without an NBA game.

BIG ONE IN THE BIG D:
With Dallas and Utah tied for the final Western Conference playoff spot and Houston a game back, it's a huge game in Dallas on Wednesday night when the Rockets visit.

STRIVE FOR FIVE: With injury-plagued Memphis on a six-game losing streak, Portland has pulled within a half-game of the Grizzlies for the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference.

DUNCAN'S 1,000TH: Tim Duncan's next victory will be his 1,000th in the regular season, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,074) and Robert Parish (1,014) as the only players to reach that milestone. Duncan is already the career leader in victories with one team.

PHILLY FUTILITY: The 76ers have lost 12 straight games and remain stuck on nine wins. They need one more to avoid tying their own record for worst in an 82-game season, and their next chance to get it is against the injury-depleted New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday.

STAT LINE OF THE WEEK: Blake Griffin, Clippers: 6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists Sunday in a 114-109 victory over Washington. The star forward started and played 25 minutes in his first game since Christmas after recovering from quadriceps and hand injuries, and sitting out a four-game suspension for punching the team's assistant equipment manager.
