    Wednesday's First Four

    March 17, 2015

East Regional First Four - No. 11 Boise State vs. No. 11 Dayton (truTV, 9:10 p.m. ET)
    Venue: Dayton Arena
    Location: Dayton, Ohio
Betting Odds: Dayton -4, Total 126

The Selection Committee got it way wrong with Dayton and Boise State. The Flyers, who advanced to last season's Elite Eight, should not have to be playing 72 hours after losing a heartbreaker to VCU in the finals of the Atlantic-10 Tournament. Dayton (25-8 straight up, 16-15 against the spread) went 6-6 against the RPI Top 100, while UCLA went 5-10 versus the Top 100 and was an atrocious 2-8 against the Top 50. Nevertheless, the Bruins are a No. 10 seed.

Dayton has one of the rising stars in the coaching profession in Archie Miller, who has led the Flyers to 51 wins the last two years and its first Elite Eight trip since 1984. This has been Miller's best coaching job, as his team has had to play without five key contributors due to suspensions and injuries. His rotation, which featured 11 regulars last season, has been reduced to seven players.

Nevertheless, Dayton finished second in the A-10 regular-season standings, posting quality wins over the likes of VCU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Richmond, La Salle and Rhode Island (twice). The Flyers have only one bad loss -- at Duquesne. They challenged themselves in the non-conference portion of the schedule, playing at Arkansas, hosting Georgia Tech and facing UConn on a neutral floor.

Jordan Sibert is the catalyst for Dayton, averaging a team-best 16.5 points and 1.8 steals per game. Sibert gets plenty of help from Kendall Pollard and Dyshawn Pierre, who average 12.8 and 12.7 points per game, respectively. Pierre averages a team-best 8.2 RPG.

Boise State (25-8 SU, 19-11 ATS) shouldn't be playing in Dayton, either, and it sure as hell shouldn't be playing at Dayton. Leon Rice did one of the nation's best coaching jobs this season, leading the Broncos to the Mountain West regular-season championship despite losing their leading scorer Anthony Drmic to a season-ending ankle injury.

Drmic is one of the best pure shooters West of the Rockies and he's a two-time All-MWC selection. Despite his absence, Rice guided his team to 15 wins its last 17 games dating back to Jan. 13. During this stretch, Boise St. covered the number at an incredible 14-3 ATS clip.

Senior guard Derrick Marks earned MWC Player of the Year honors. Marks, who Rice plucked out of Chicago, is one of the best players in BSU history and his play during his senior year has been off the charts.

Marks averages team-highs in scoring (19.3 points per game), assists (3.0 APG) and steals (1.8 SPG). He's also averaging 3.7 RPG and shooting at outstanding clips from the field (49.4%), behind the 3-point line (44.0%) and at the charity stripe (78.9%).

When Drmic (15.0 PPG in seven outings) went down, sophomore forward James Webb III emerged as a big-time player. Webb was named the MWC's Newcomer of the Year and was a second-team all-league selection.

Webb, who was also on the conference's All-Defensive Team, averaged 11.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He's a high-flyer who plays above the rim and alters shots at the defensive end. Webb does a terrific job of helping in the lane from the weak side.

BSU's big Aussie doesn't get the press clippings afforded to his coach, Marks and Webb, but Nick Duncan provides the Broncos with fire, emotion, physicality and 3-pointers. Duncan (9.7 PPG) has scored in double figures in three straight games and four of the last six, including 26 and 23-point efforts. He makes 39.0 percent of his attempts from downtown.

Dayton hasn't tasted defeat at home all season. Not once in 16 games.

And that's what makes Boise State's trip across country for a true road game even more baffling. Making matters worse, the Broncos have to forget about their nightmare showing at the same arena two seasons ago.

BSU was sent to the First Four in the 2013 Tournament to face La Salle. Rice's team came out flat and played one of its worst games of the season, falling 80-71 to the Explorers as a 1.5-point underdog. Drmic had 28 points, while Marks finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

BSU has been an underdog nine times this year, producing a 7-2 spread record with five outright victories. The Broncos have wins at San Diego St., at UNLV, at New Mexico and at Saint Mary's. The other outright triumph as a 'dog came at home against the Aztecs when they were catching one point.

Dayton has been a single-digit home favorite seven times, going 4-3 ATS. The Flyers are 9-5 ATS in their 14 lined home contests.

As of early Tuesday, most betting shops had Dayton installed as a four-point favorite with a total of 127 points. Gamblers can back Boise St. on the money line for a +155 return (risk $100 to win $155).

The 'over' is on a 9-4 roll in Dayton's last 13 games, improving to 16-11 overall for the season.

The 'over' is 12-11 overall for BSU after cashing in back-to-back games.

TruTV will have the broadcast around 9:10 p.m. Eastern (30 minutes after the conclusion of Robert Morris vs. North Florida).

    **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Robert Morris and North Florida will meet in Wednesday's lid-lifter in Dayton at 6:40 p.m. Eastern on TruTV. As of early Tuesday, most spots had the Osprey favored by three points with a total of 138.5. North Florida won the Atlantic Sun Tournament and if that conference's name rings a bell, it's because Florida Gulf Coast and Mercer combined for three Tournament wins over the last two years while representing the league.

-- According to multiple reports out of Athens, Georgia starting guard Kenny Gaines didn't practice Monday and won't attempt to until Wednesday in preparation for Friday's 7/10 matchup vs. Michigan St. Gaines (11.6 PPG) has missed two of UGA's last three games since spraining his foot at practice prior to the regular-season finale at Auburn. He played in a win over South Carolina in the SEC Tourney quarterfinals, but he sat out a loss to Arkansas in the semifinals.

-- Although many coaches like Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, UNC's Roy Williams, Louisville's Rick Pitino, Michigan St.'s Tom Izzo and other have more career NCAA Tournament wins, it is SMU's Larry Brown who has the best career NCAA Tournament winning percentage among active coaches. Brown is 19-6 (76.0%) and back in the Tourney for the first time since leading Kansas and his 'Danny and The Miracles' team to the 1988 title by beating Billy Tubbs's Oklahoma squad that featured Mookie Blaylock and Stacey King.

-- All indications out of Morgantown are that West Va's Juwan Staten and Gary Browne will be good to go this week after missing the Big 12 Tournament with injuries.

-- Georgia Tech announced Monday that Brian Gregory will return for a fifth season despite failing to take the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive time. G-Tech still owes former coach Paul Hewitt another $3.6 million over the next four years, and Gregory's buyout is reportedly for $2.4 million. Therefore, this is clearly a financial decision and unless Gregory has a breakout year in 2015-2016, he'll likely take a pink slip at this time next year. This has to be immensely disappointing for Tech fans, who have heard their schools' name called just six times over the last 22 Selection Sundays.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds on various teams to win the NCAA tournament.........

13-2-- Arizona-- That would make them second favorite, behind Kentucky.

8-1-- Duke-- Two of their four NCAA titles were won in Indianapolis.

13-1-- Gonzaga-- Have never been to the Final Four.

20-1-- Would be great Final Four sleeper, but they're in Kentucky's region.

45-1-- Baylor-- My choice if you were to wager on a longshot.

90-1-- Arkansas-- Another team that would be worth a look at a price.

      **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random stuff from the desert......

      13) Ole Miss 92, BYU 90-- Its not the rules of college basketball that need to be fixed; its that more coaches need to have the onions to let their players play. This was one of the best games to watch in NCAA tournament history. BYU was 15-29 from the arc and lost. Ole Miss scored 62 points in the second half.

      12) Hampton 74, Manhattan 64-- Pirates took 34 foul shots, only seven 3's and made lot of mid-range jump shots. They controlled this game the whole way and looked like a much better team than their record indicated they were.

      11) Murray State 81, UTEP 66-- Step #1 on the Murray State vengeance tour were the Miners, but I think Murray goes to Tulsa next, which will be a tougher game.

      10) Alabama 79, Illinois 58-- Credit to the Bama kids for leading 46-22 at halftime after their coach was fired 48 hours earlier. Not much to say for Illinois' effort here.

      9) If you're coming to Las Vegas, I highly recommend South Point hotel, which is a few miles from the main strip, but it has a lot of great stuff-- movies, bowling alley, Steak 'n Shake, bingo tournaments (or so I'm told). Sportsbook is open 24 hours a day and they have a great ice cream place near the side door.

      8) Klay Thompson is out 7-10 days (ankle) which dampens tonight's game against the Hawks in a battle of NBA titans. Thompson has a brother who is an outfielder with the White Sox; not sure if he'll be in AAA or the majors this season.

      7) People bet on exhibition baseball games!!! Why?

      6) When you're watching lot of games in the sportsbook, you obviously can't hear most of them, so you notice how much contact these officials are allowing to take place. You see a collision and play goes on when you assume play would stop because of the collision, but officials let lot of stuff go. If you let defenders foul, it is obvious that scores will be lower.

      5) Wyoming-Northern Iowa total is 109. I cannot remember a lower total for a college basketball game, at least not since the shot clock came in 30 years ago.

      4) There is an advantage to being in these play-in games, as far as recruiting goes. How else would North Florida get two hours on national TV in primetime? Some of these teams agree to play on ESPN at 6am or 8am in November during the tip-off marathon- they will do anything to get on television. Good chance to market their program.

      3) Of 68 teams in the NCAA tournament, VCU/Georgetown travelled the longest for this week's games; Dayton obviously traveled the least distance, sonce they're playing at home tonight and then not too far away (Louisville) if they win.

      2) Stephen Curry had 13 turnovers in his first college game at Davidson!!!!

      1) I'm a big proponent that high schools should teach a basic life skills course to every kid as a mandatory class to take. How to write checks, how to cook, how to manage your time, marriage laws, basic nutrition-- important everyday stuff.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Wednesday, March 18

          NCAA play-in games
Robert Morris won a true road game to win its conference tourney final; they were 4-8 when NEC play started but went 15-6 in league, winning its last six games. Colonials force turnovers 21.7% of time, #30 in nation. North Florida is from same league that gave up Fla Gulf Coast/Mercer in last two tournaments; Ospreys have seven players who scored 20+ pts in a game this season; they won at Purdue, won 16 of last 18 tilts overall. NEC teams lost last seven tourney gams, losing play-in game LY, they had won previous two play-in games.

Last true home game in NCAA tourney was 1987; Dayton has one here, vs Boise team making lone trip east after tying San Diego State for first in Mountain west. Broncos are 15-2 in last 17 games after starting out 0-3 in league, winning seven of last eight but got upset by Wyoming Friday. Dayton lost A-14 final to VCU Sunday; they split last four games, are an impressive 16-0 at home this season. Flyers are young/thin (#342 team in bench minutes). Boise is experienced team that subs a lot and has point guard in Marks who can take over came, but true road game is tough.

First of all, nobody in these next three tournaments wants to be here; they all want to be in the NCAAs. Once teams win a game or two, it'll get better, but it is impossible to know who is motivated in the first round. Crowds will be smaller, teams don't travel first class in these events.

          NIT games
Long road trip for Arizona State squad that had bad loss in Las Vegas to USC week ago tonight in Pac-12 tourney. ASU lost three of its last five games; they're 8-5 in non-league games. UConn lost AAC final Sunday in Hartford to SMU; quick turnaround here. Huskies won 10 of last 11 at home- they lost by 12 at Stanford in only game vs Pac-12 opponent. Sun Devils lost four of last five road games.

Bucknell was top seed in Patriot but was 13-5 so hardly dominant; they won seven of last nine games, are 5-8 out of conference- they lost all four games vs top 100 teams, by 24-7-27-8 points. Young team that subs lot. Temple lost won 11 of last 14 games; they beat American 40-37 in only game vs Patriot League. Owls won last six home games- they scored less than 60 points in their last six losses.

Old Dominion won six of last seven games, got upset in forst round of C-USA tourney by Middle Tennessee; Monarchs beat Gardner-Webb by 12 in only game vs Big South team. Charleston Southern tied for 1st in Big South at 13-5, were first #1 seed to get beat in conference tourney, losing to #314 Longwood; Buccaneers are 6-5 out of conference; half those wins are vs non-D1 teams.

St Francis lost its conference tourney final at home, bitter loss, ending an 11-game win streak; Terriers started season 0-5, are 6-7 in non-conference games. Richmond forces turnovers 21.6% of time; they've won six of last seven games, losing to local rival VCU in A-14 tourney. St Francis turns ball over 19.9% of time (#227). Spiders are just 7-6 out of conference.

Green Bay is 2-0 vs MVC teams this year, beating Evansville'Drake; they have terrific senior PG in Sykes, are 4-4 in last eight games. Green Bay is shooting 28.8% from arc, 12th-worst in country. Illinois State upset #1 seed Wichita in Arch Madness; Redbirds lost final to Northern Iowa, are 6-1 in last seven games overall- they beat Youngstown in OT, only game they played vs a Horizon team.

St Mary's went 4-5 in its last nine games, losing three of last four; they're 8-3 in non-league games, but first round loss to Portland in WCC tourney sealed their fate. Gaels have an experienced team that depends on big man Waldow to score inside. Vanderbilt had won five in row before Tennessee upset them in SEC tourney; Commodores are 5th-youngest team in USA they won three of last four true road games.

Think Colorado State has a chip on its shoulder? Only one way to show people they belonged in tournament; thats to do well here. Not sure how healthy big man Avila (ankle) is; they said he could've played last week, but were sure they were in NCAAs so they rested him. South Dakota St lost Summit final by point; they won at Utah State of Mountain west in December. Jackrabbits make 37.7% from arc (#59).

          CBI games
Stony Brook blew 7-point lead with 2:24 left Saturday, when they had first NCAA bid in their mitts; Seawolves tied for 2nd in America East, a league similar to Atlantic Sun- they're in bottom 15 expereinced teams in country, went 8-6 against #50 non-league schedule. Catamounts are 5-8 in non-conference games. Hofstra has very good guards but not much depth.

Delaware State was 9-7 in MEAC, has to be encouraged by Hampton's win last night; Hornets won five of last six games- they lost to Campbell by 15, their only game vs Big South opponent. Radford lost three of last five games; they beat Howard by 9 in only game vs MEAC foe. Radford is 4th-most experienced team in country but went 9-4 out of conference with three wins vs non-D1 teams.

UCSB lost Big West semifinal late Friday; star F Williams banged up his shoulder again in that game, but finished game. Gauchos had won six in a row before losing to Irvine in semis; they're 7-7 in non-league games with two non-D1 wins. Oral Roberts won four of last five home games, but is 6-7 in non-Summit games; Golden Eagles' last three games were decided by 4 or less points.

Eastern Michigan plays 2-3 zone like Syracuse; UL-Monroe can't shoot, going 3-4 in last seven games after starting 12-3 in Sun Belt. Warhawks are 6-5 out of conference with FOUR non-D1 wins. EMU won four of last five games, losing to Toledo by 11 in MAC tourney. Eagles are 11-2 vs #265 non-conference schedule, very Syracuse-like. EMU is an older team that subs a lot.

Colorado is without best player Booker (quit) who decided not to play in this tournament; Buffaloes subbed a lot this year, so they have guys who can take Booker's place, but they're 4-8 in last 12 games, losing three of last five home games. Gardner-Webb went 10-8 in Big South, losing by 3 to Coastal Carolina in Big South tourney- they have three non-D1 wins, but also beat Clemson and Purdue.

Pepperdine went 11-9 in WCC, losing to its nemesis Gonzaga; they are 7-4 out of conference, and lost six of last nine games overall. Waves are much-improved but still young; they lost four of last six on road. Seattle has played 7th-easiest schedule in country, going 7-7 in WAC, which is not a good league. Redhawks won five of last seven games, split their 14 non-conference games- they lost WAC final Saturday night in Vegas.

          CIT tournament
High Point tied for first in Big South, after losing regular season finale in triple OT to Charleston Southern, then lost its first tourney game in OT, so their heads have to be spinning a little; Panthers have three non-D1 wins, are 9-3 in non-league games. Md-Eastern Shore had won four in a row before losing to Hampton in MEAC tourney- they make 38.5% of their 3's, #29 in country.

Dartmouth KO'd Yale from top spot in Ivy with OT win in last game, 11 days ago; Big Green won last five games to finish 7-7 in Ivy- they're also 7-7 in non-conference games, but they did win three non-conference tilts on road. Canisius won four of last six games but lost to Monmouth in first MAAc tourney game- they lost by 7 at Cornell in only game vs an Ivy League team.

Florida Gulf Coast hasn't been same since coach Enfield left; they lost in A-Sun tourney to SC-Upstate after going 11-3 in regular season. Eagles lost three of last four games after a 10-game win streak; they lost five of last six non-conference games vs D-I teams. Corpus Christi went 7-2 in last nine games but lost four of last five on road; they're 5-7 in non-league games and that was against the #321 non-league schedule.

Coach of Grand Canyon is Dan Majerle, whose Antelopes lost three of last four games- they split a pair of home games with Big Sky teams in the fall.

Portland won 80-75 at Sacramento State Dec 14, going 9-20 from arc in game where both teams shot 58%+ inside arc. Bettors fading UCLA in Round of 64

Books have, however, adjusted the spreads for a handful of games with early money dictating the move. Here seven Round of 64 matchups drawing money from sharps and where those numbers are at as the tournament gets underway Tuesday.

No. 11 UCLA Bruins vs. No. 6 SMU Mustangs – Open: -2, Move: -4

UCLA was the black sheep of Selection Sunday, somehow making it into the Big Dance as an 11 seed. That’s carried over to the betting market, where money on the Mustangs has moved this spread as much as two points at some books, such as online shop TopBet.eu.

No. 13 Harvard Crimson vs. No. 4 North Carolina Tar Heels – Open: -9, move: -10.5

North Carolina’s effort in the ACC tournament, knocking off Louisville and Virginia, has convinced the public money to side with the Tar Heels in their NCAA opener versus Harvard. According to Sportsbook.ag, one of many shops seeing money on UNC, they expect sharps to buy back the Crimson and wouldn’t be surprised if the Ivy League champs gave the Heels a run for their money.

No. 15 New Mexico State Aggies vs. No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks – Open: -12, Move: -10.5

Bettors were convinced by KU’s showing in the Big 12 tournament, losing to Iowa State in the championship game. The Jayhawks have injury concerns for Perry Ellis and still are without Cliff Alexander due to eligibility issues. At MGM properties in Las Vegas, this is the only game that has moved more than one point, as of Tuesday afternoon.

                Fade Alert - Overseeded Teams

                March 18, 2015

2015 NCAA Tournament: Over Seeded Teams 16-to-1

Once the games start the bracket debate quiets down but here is a look at each seed line with a team that perhaps found a more favorable position than deserved. It is a unique challenge to put the field together and ultimately the final result is not always entirely fair to everyone.

East Regional - No. 16 Lafayette: It was somewhat shocking that Patriot League tournament champion Lafayette did not end up in one of the First Four games. The Patriot League has produced a few upsets in recent years so perhaps the conference was given more respect but the Leopards were just a .500 team in conference play. They upset top seed Bucknell in the Patriot semifinals and then benefitted from other upsets by getting to play No. 6 seed American in the final to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2000. Lafayette did beat First Four No. 16 Robert Morris by 27 in the season opener to perhaps create some separation. Lafayette is actually one of the few teams in the country that is a better three-point shooting team than their round of 64 foe Villanova.

West Regional - No. 15 Texas Southern: Most power rankings would call Texas Southern the second worst team in the tournament yet the Tigers landed a spot on the 15-line. The committee rewarded playing a tough non-conference schedule and a few marquee wins as Texas Southern opened the season 3-10 through an absolute gauntlet of major conference road games before closing the season with wins in 19 of the final 21 games against more reasonable competition. Early season upsets on the road at Michigan State and at Kansas State certainly raised eyebrows as well but the SWAC is always one of the lowest rated conferences and those wins months ago did not warrant the move up over more deserving teams like North Florida and Coastal Carolina.

South Regional - No. 14 UAB: The Blazers are another team whose profile was boosted in the committee’s eyes by losing to quality teams early in the season as UAB took defeats against Wisconsin, North Carolina and a handful of other major conference teams. This is a young team that improved as the season went on but that was only good enough for 5th place in the regular season standings in Conference USA. The conference tournament featured three big wins that happened to be across town from campus in Birmingham and UAB only had to play one of the top three teams due to Middle Tennessee State’s run of upsets who UAB faced in the final with the Blue Raiders having to play four games in four days.

South Regional - No. 13 Eastern Washington: It felt like a bit of a down year for the Big Sky which in past seasons has often been one of the stronger small conferences. Four teams were separated by just a game on top of the regular season standings and Eastern Washington snuck out three narrow wins to advance to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time ever for the program. The Eagles made some noise with a November win at Indiana and then started 10-1 in league play before fading down the stretch. First round opponent Georgetown has an upset risk history but ultimately the Eagles are fortunate to not be in a 3/14 or 2/15 matchup.

East Regional - No. 12 Wyoming: The Mountain West has rarely lived up to its billing in the NCAA Tournament and a Wyoming squad that finished tied for fourth in the league in the regular season wound up winning the conference tournament with three wins by two, five in overtime, and two. Wyoming had lost five of the final regular season games before catching fire in Las Vegas and the Cowboys were rewarded with a generous seed. Teams like Georgia State and Valparaiso could make strong cases for being on the 12-line instead as both were regular season and tournament champions from conferences that really don’t rate substantially weaker than the Mountain West.

South Regional - No. 11 UCLA: While UCLA’s controversial inclusion in the tournament generated a lot of debate the bigger issue is that they are not in one of the First Four matchups. The Bruins did take on a great schedule and a young team clearly did pass the eye-test late in the season with improved play and some big wins though this was a squad that did very little away from home, finishing 4-12 in road and neutral site games. Ultimately any of the No. 11 seeds in the first four grouping could make a pretty reasonable case that they have a better resume than UCLA. The far proximity to Dayton argument doesn’t hold up either as western squads BYU and Boise State were sent packing to western Ohio and UCLA wound up being sent to Louisville anyway.

Midwest Regional - No. 10 Indiana: It looked very possible that Tom Cream was going to have to turn down the NIT for a second straight season as the Hoosiers looked to most squarely on the bubble by Selection Sunday. The committee put Indiana in pretty comfortably as a No. 10 seed even with 13 losses and a 5-9 run to close the season despite the emphasis on late season play shown in other selections. Indiana’s win over Butler in December wound up carrying a lot of weight as the committee clearly respected the Big East in the seeding more than most expected. Indiana went just 9-9 in a pretty mediocre Big Ten and they won just three road games all season.

Midwest Regional - No. 9 Purdue: Purdue seemed to be a bubble team late in the season and the NCAA Tournament prospects looked in real jeopardy as they struggled to pull away from Penn State in the Big Ten tournament. The Boilermakers did go 12-6 in the Big Ten but they faced Wisconsin, Maryland, Michigan State, and Iowa just once each for a very favorable slate. Usually one bad loss can be overcome but Purdue had non-conference misses against Kansas State, North Florida, Gardner Webb, and Vanderbilt when the Commodores were not playing particularly well. It is good to see Purdue back in the big dance but this was a team that probably deserved to be seeded closer to the cut line.

West Regional - No. 8 Oregon: The Ducks were a No. 7 seed last season in this same region and if they win they will get a rematch with Wisconsin, who beat Oregon in a thrilling game in the round of 32 as a No. 2 seed. Oregon played well down the stretch to recover from a mediocre start to the season but this year’s team is nowhere near as good as last year’s team was, just compare the games with Arizona, the clear top team in the Pac-12 both seasons. The best non-conference wins for Oregon this season came against Illinois and Toledo and the 25-9 record was boosted by three overtime wins and several other narrow escapes.

West Regional - No. 7 Virginia Commonwealth: It would be interesting to see where VCU would have been seeded had they lost Sunday’s A-10 final against Dayton, who was sent to the First Four. A Rams squad that underachieved relative to expectations all season wound up with a favorable seed but a very tough first matchup. VCU lost six of the final 11 regular season games before getting some momentum in the conference tournament with four straight wins though they trailed Fordham late in the first game and probably deserved to lose to Richmond in a wild late comeback before posting more convincing wins over Davidson and Dayton. The double-overtime win over Northern Iowa carries a lot of weight for the Rams and perhaps speculation that Briante Weber could return boosted their stature.

West Regional - No. 6 Xavier: The Musketeers finished in 6th place in the Big East out of just 10 teams in the regular season standings yet Xavier is one of three Big East teams to earn No. 6 seeds in the tournament. A case can be made that Butler and Providence are posted a bit high as well but Xavier is the most glaring of the three, going just 9-9 in league play and featuring no real wins of substance in non-conference play. Losses to UTEP, Long Beach State, and Auburn in non-conference play also seemingly went unpunished. The positives for Xavier really hinge on owning Georgetown with three wins against the Hoyas boosting the resume and having played highly ranked Villanova three times to boost the strength of schedule even though Xavier lost by double-digits each time.

Midwest Regional - No. 5 West Virginia: The Big XII was certainly a strong and deep league but West Virginia went 2-7 in games vs. the top four teams in the league. The 11-7 record in conference play features more than half of the wins coming against the bottom three teams in the conference. A neutral site win over NC State is really all the Mountaineers can hang their hat on in the non-conference season that produced a 12-1 record over mostly light competition. Had West Virginia not snuck out a one-point home win over Kansas in February the Mountaineers could easily have been dropped several spots on the bracket.

East Regional - No. 4 Louisville: There was outrage last season when the defending national champions were given a No. 4 seed in the tournament. This season’s team has the same draw even though there is big gap between those teams. There is actually a huge gap between this year’s Louisville team in January and the team that finished the season without Chris Jones as Louisville wound up losing half of the final 10 games. The big win over Virginia is all that is holding things together for Louisville as this has been a really poor shooting team now without its best perimeter shooter. The ACC was very strong this season but Louisville went 2-6 vs. ACC teams that made the NCAA Tournament field.

South Regional - No. 3 Iowa State: The Cyclones were a No. 3 seed last season that fell in the Sweet 16 in a tight game with eventual champion Connecticut. This year’s team doesn’t have the best two players from that team but the Cyclones managed to get back to the 3-line with a 12-6 record in Big XII, finishing third in the conference as incredibly four Big XII teams were seeded as the top 12 teams in the tournament. The Cyclones are the most exciting of those teams but also the most erratic as the recent run of comeback wins has displayed. Iowa State didn’t always pull those games out with losses to South Carolina, Texas Tech, and Kansas State this season, a worse trio than most of the other high seeds claim.

South Regional - No. 2 Gonzaga: Obviously all the top seeds had excellent seasons but when on Selection Sunday all the potential No. 1 seeds hope to have you as the opposing No. 2 in the region there is something there. Gonzaga beat some decent teams in a solid non-conference campaign but they failed in the one opportunity for a win that would have legitimized the Bulldogs as an elite squad. They also lost at home to a bubble team with that win being the key reason that BYU wound up making the tournament. It has become impossible to ignore the past March failures for Gonzaga and this year’s team is perhaps unfairly penalized perception-wise for the 2013 team that was handed a controversial No. 1 seed only to struggle to beat the No. 16 seed and then got bounced in the next game.

West Regional - No. 1 Wisconsin: The Badgers were a Final Four team last season and at their best looks the part as a contender this season. Ultimately Virginia’s case to be a No. 1 seed looked stronger however as the Big Ten was down this season and the losses for Wisconsin were worse. Both teams lost at home to Duke and also on the road to a quality team in conference play but the Badgers handed Rutgers one of its two Big Ten wins this season. Frank Kaminsky did not play that day but that doesn’t make it excusable. There were also two overtime wins on the resume and a Big Ten schedule that only featured one meeting each with Maryland, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan for one of the weakest slates in a conference that didn’t match the quality of play of the past few seasons.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Welcome to the best weekend of the year

                  13) Robert Morris 81, North Florida 77--Colonials were +14 in turnovers (19-5) in game they once trailed by 14. Another fun game to watch. Robert Morris now plays Duke, so hopefully they enjoyed this win.

                  12) Dayton 56, Boise State 55-- Just felt bad for Boise State; they have to play the first true road game in this tournament in 28 years, then they lose by a point, in tense struggle where Broncos led 29-20 at the half. Tough loss to swallow.

                  11) Its funny how the play-in doubleheaders have kind of a JV/Varsity feel to them, with the lesser teams playing first, then the bigger name teams playing. Just like high school ball, sometimes the first game is the more entertaining game of the twinbill.

                  10) Warriors 114, Hawks 95-- Golden State was 14-30 from arc even without injured Klay Thompson, in battle between league's two best teams this season.

                  9) South Dakota State 86, Colorado State 76-- Apparently Rams weren't too fired up about being in the NIT. Jackrabbits were 12-28 from the arc.

                  8) Weird stuff in Syracuse, where the AD gets fired and Jim Boeheim becomes a lame duck for the next three seasons, before he goes into forced retirement. I'm assuming that Mike Hopkins will hang around to clean up the mess that results from all this-- he had been named coach-in-waiting a few years ago.

                  7) Holy Cross hired former Northwestern coach Bill Carmody, who never got the Wildcats to the NCAAs-- he'll have a better chance with the Crusaders. Wonder if he will still run the Princeton offense?

                  6) Rough night for the WCC, going 0-3 last night, with two home losses; Vandy beat St Mary's, Sacramento State beat Portland and Pepperdine got whacked in Seattle.

                  5) Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the day LMU crushed Michigan 149-115 in the second round of the NCAAs, one of the most awesome displays of basketball I've ever seen. 25 years later, Steve Fisher is going great guns at San Diego State; he was the Michigan coach that day 25 years ago.

                  4) BYU had to play in a Tuesday play-in game because they do not play on Sundays and the Wednesday play-in teams get put into a Friday-Sunday bracket, should they win. BYU presents a lot of logistical problems for the Selection Committee.

                  3) Indianapolis Colts put this rule change in front of the NFL this week;

If a team goes for two points after a TD and makes it, they can try a 50-yard kick that gives them a 9th point if it is good.

Not sure if Jim Irsay thought up that one while in rehab, but it sure is different.

                  2) Still think Lafayette should've been in a play-in game before Manhattan, but if you get put there, you have to win. VCU made the Final Four from a play-in game.

                  1) My Final Four picks: Kentucky-Baylor-Villanova-Gonzaga.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

                    Letdown spot

The Wyoming Cowboys aren’t supposed to be dancing this March but an upset run in the Mountain West Conference tournament burst plenty of bubbles and has Wyoming sitting as an always dangerous No. 12 seed, taking on No. 5 Northern Iowa in the Round of 64. While the 12-over-5 upset produced three stunners last March, bettors may be safe with the higher seed in this matchup.

The Cowboys run the risk of a massive letdown in their tournament opener. We’ve seen teams come off surprise runs in their conference tournament and get crushed in the NCAA, thanks to a sense of accomplishment and just being “happy” to be here. Oddsmakers opened Wyoming as a 7-point underdog and that line has been trimmed to +6, with the market reacting to previous No. 12 shockers.

                    Lookahead spot

The New Orleans Pelicans are currently eighth in the Western Conference, just barely edging the Oklahoma City Thunder for the final postseason spot. New Orleans has a huge week with road games at Golden State and Los Angeles, but before then must travel to Phoenix to face the Suns Thursday night.

The Pelicans are three and a half games up on the Suns in the West standings and could get caught looking ahead to the Warriors and Clippers. New Orleans has lost four of its last five games versus Phoenix, most recently beating the Suns 110-106 at home in December. The home team has covered in each of the past four meetings between these Western rivals.

                    Schedule spot

The Rhode Island Rams knocked off the Iona Gaels in the opening round of the NIT Tuesday night, winning 88-75 as 7-point home favorites. But they don’t have much time to celebrate that victory, and will be busy packing for a cross-country trip to play Stanford in the second round Friday.

Rhode Island travels to Palo Alto with a 7-4 SU and 5-6 ATS record on the road. Not only will the Rams have to deal with a long flight from coast to coast but also battle the clock in California, which is three-hour time difference. There was a chance that this game could have been played at the Ryan Center, since Stanford is hosting women’s tournament games. However, organizers have found a time slot – since TBA - which will come at night.

                          Armadillo's Write-Up

                          Thursday, March 19

                          Thursday's NCAA games
Notre Dame maxed-out last week winning ACC tourney, its first tourney win; they were solid sleeper choice for Final Four until they got put into Kentucky's region. Fighting Irish are diverse on offense, pass it real well, shoot 39.2% (#17) from arc and have best eFG% in country, but they've also lost in first round of NCAAs three of last four years; last time they made Sweet 16 was 2003. Northeastern drilled 12-20 from arc in winning CAA title game ten days ago; Huskies are 1-2 vs top 100 teams; best win is over #50 Richmond. CAA teams lost in first round last two years by 21-15 points.

UAB won C-USA tournament because it was played in Birmingham and refs wouldn't let them lose semi-final game vs #1 seed La Tech (FTs that game were 32-7). Blazers are 7th-youngest team in America- at one point this year, they were 4-9-- they lost last four games away from home- last road win was Jan 31. UAB turns ball over 20.4 of time, but their coach is Kansas alum and Jayhawks are Iowa State's nemesis. Cyclones won their second straight Big X tournament, but they've been falling behind and then making huge second half runs.

Georgia State's Harrow (hamstring) is a ?? for this game; their coach tore his achilles tendon after they won conference tourney Sunday-- that had to hurt team's prep for this. Panthers lost by 23 at Iowa State Nov 17, its only game vs Big X team this year- they force turnovers 22.8% of time, #16 in country. Sun Belt teams are 1-6 vs spread in last seven tourney games; last Sun Belt win in non-play-in game was Western Kentucky in '09. Baylor is my sleeper pick to make Final Four; #3 seeds are 10-6 vs spread in first round games last four years.

Texas Southern is coached by Mike Davis, who led Indiana to Final Four in 2002; his Tigers played one home game before Jan 17- they were 6-10 playing money grab games all over America, but they beat Michigan State in OT, and won at Kansas State- they have collection of transfers from all over, some of whom have had multiple chances. Arizona expects to get to Final Four; are 5-0 vs teams ranked outside top 200, with all five wins by 18+ points- they're 2-4 vs spread in last six first round games. Since '07, SWAC teams are 2-4 against the spread in non-play-in games.

Texas turns ball over 20% of time, is 4th-worst team forcing turnovers in country; Longhorns split last four first round games, with all four games decided by six or less points. Texas went 3-5 in last eight games, finished T6 in Big X (best league in country)- -they were 11-2 out of conference. Butler lost by 13 to Oklahoma of Big X on neutral court in November. Big East teams were 2-4 SU in tourney LY, first year after teams shuffled conferences. Favorites are 9-2-1 in 6-11 games last three years- over last six years, 1st round faves of less than 5 points are 26-53-1 vs number.

UCLA is most controversial choice in this field; SMU was controversial omission from LY's tourney. Bruins won last four first round games, but those were different players- UCLA was a #1 or 2 seed in three of those years, a 6-seed LY. Bruins lost six of last eight games away from home; they're #314 experienced team in country. SMU is 24-3 in last 27 games, with two losses to Cincinnati, a great defensive team- UCLA isn't great on defense. Mustangs are #81 team in experience and have Larry Brown on bench, who won this tourney last time he was in it, though that was 27 years ago.

Ole Miss went nuts in second half Tuesday, scoring 62 points in beating BYU 94-90; Cougars went 15-29 on arc and lost. Rebels have very short turnaround, playing afternoon game- they're 2-4 in last six games, but Ole Miss came as close to anyone to beating Kentucky this year, losing 89-86 in OT at Rupp. Rebels beat Creighton of Big East in November. Kennedy used to coach at Cincinnati, so he is familar with a Xavier team that lost in double OT at Auburn in December (also beat Alabama by 13). Xavier split its last six games; four of their last five wins were by 2 or less or in overtime- they started season 10-3, they're 11-10 in last 21 games.

VCU won A-14 tourney Sunday afternoon, now has Thursday afternoon game 2,900 miles away, tough scheduling spot. Rams won A-14 tourney despite losing PG Weber for season Jan 31- they're better offensive team with Lewis at PG, not as good a pressing team. Rams went 32-72 (44%) from arc in last three games in Brooklyn last week. Ohio State went 4-4 in last eight games; an ESPN sideline reporter (former athlete) said he had severe doubts about Buckeyes' team chemistry after listening to huddles during a game. OSU holds team to 31.8% from arc. Over last six years, underdogs are 16-7-1 vs spread in 7-10 games.

Lafayette coach O'Hanlon went to Villanova; his team was 9-9 in Patriot League before winning conference tourney - they're #2 (41.4%) team in country shooting 3-pointers. Leopards lost at West Virginia by 27, lost at Kansas by 27, lost by 22 at Yale in only three games vs top 100 teams. Villanova is 2-5 vs spread in last seven first round games; they won by 7 over Bucknell in only game vs Patriot team this year. Wildcats probably spent time prepping for second round game (NC State/LSU); they've won last 15 games in row after winning first Big East tourney title in 20 years. Villanova is #27 team in country defending the arc.

Cincinnati lost to Creighton/Harvard in first round last two years; they've won five of last six games overall,. losing to UConn in Hartford last week in AAC tourney. Bearcats have an interim coach (Cronin took ill during season, is an advisor) are #258 experience team but have #19 defensive eFG% in country. Purdue is #311 in experience, is in tournament for first time in three years; Boilers are 2-3 in last five games, turning the ball over 20% of time for season- they were only 8-5 in pre-conference games. Over last eight years, underdogs are 22-10 vs spread in 8-9 games.

Random odd stat: 4-13 game in West has seen the underdog go 12-2-1 vs spread last 15 years, with five SU upsets. Harvard is in tourney for 4th year in row; they won first round game last two years but this team isn't quite as good as those- they lost 76-27 to Virginia, lost at Arizona State by 10 in only two non-conference top 100 games. North Carolina is 4-2 vs spread in last six first round games, winning all six- they've won six of last eight games overall. Ivy teams usually have extra week to prepare for this, but Harvard had to win playoff game Saturday, so they're on same short prep time as Tar Heels. Amaker is a Duke alum, by the way.

Over last 12 years, Southland Conference teams have been single digit dog twice in first round; they won both games ('06/'14), their only two first round wins over that time. SF Austin upset VCU LY for one of the wins; Lumberjacks are 29-4 this year, 61-7 last two years- they're also 1-3 vs top 100 non-league teams, losing by 2-18-16 points in November. Over last five years, underdogs are 17-7 vs spread in 5-12 games. Utah is 3-4 in its last seven games; they're #227 in experience. SFA forces turnovers on 24.3% of possessions (#5 in country).

LSU is in tourney for first time since '09; Tigers lost by 3 to Clemson in only game vs SEC team this year. LSU is #13 in experience but has #21 defensive eFG%. NC State star Barber was banged-up last weekend, is expected to go here as former Alabama coach Gottfried faces an SEC foe in LSU that is 4-2 in last six games but got upset by Auburn in first SEC tourney game a week ago. Wolfpack won four of its last five first round games; they're 6-2 in last eight games overall, 10-4 outside ACC. Again, over last eight years, underdogs are 22-10 vs spread in 8-9 games.

Hampton had nice win over Manhattan Tuesday, turning ball over only 14 times vs Jaspers' press, getting to foul line 34 times- they're playing with house money vs powerful Kentucky team that has its eyes farther down road, as they chase history. Hampton lost at Iowa by 34, Syracuse by 18, Illinois by 18; they turn ball over 20.6% of time which will be a problem. Over last three tournaments, #1 seeds are 4-8 vs spread in first round. Hampton is #79 experienced team in country; Knetucky is 7th youngest team, so at least Pirates have one edge in this game.

12-seed Wofford is highest seed SoCon team has had since Davidson got to Elite 8 as 10-seed with Steph Curry in '08; Terriers won at NC State in December, but lost by 15 at Stanford, 33 at West Virginia, 29 at Duke. Wofford is 0-3 in NCAAs (2-1 vs spread) losing by 4-8-17 points- they lost 57-40 to Michigan in first round LY. Arkansas is in tourney for first time since '08; they force turnovers 22.6% of time, #20 in country. Hogs played Sunday; Wofford hasn't played in 10 days, which is edge for them in this case. Over last five years, dogs are 17-7 vs spread in 5-12 games.

Eastern Washington's coach told Jim Rome on air his team was going to beat Georgetown in this game. His Eagles won conference tourney game on Montana's home court, they won 88-86 at Indiana, lost at SMU by 9, so they're capable,, but Big Sky teams lost last nine tourney games (2-7 vs spread), so there's a gap there somewhere. Georgetown's tournament history is awful, losing three of first four first round games, losing twice as a 13-point favorite. Hoyas' last four games were all decided by six or less points. 4-seeds are 8-4 vs spread in first round last three years.

First of all, nobody in these next three tournaments wants to be here; they all want to be in the NCAAs. Once teams win a game or two, it'll get better, but it is impossible to know who is motivated in the first round. Crowds will be smaller, teams don't travel first class in these events.

                          NIT games

                          CBI games

                          CIT tournament
Northwestern State always plays fast, plays lot of guys and they're good on offense, with #42 eFG%, #22 in fewest turnovers. Demons are 11-3 in last 14 games, but their 5-6 non-conference record is a joke, since four of five wins were non-D1 wins. Tennessee-Martin went 10-6 in OVC but lost three of last four games; Skyhawks have UNLV transfer Smith who came with coach Schroyer; they're #32 team shooting 3's (38.2%).

Thursday's NCAAB East Region betting cheat sheet

                              (16) Lafayette Leopards vs. (1) Villanova Wildcats (-23, 145.5)

Lafayette capped its stunning run to the Patriot League title with a 65-63 victory over American on March 11. The 16th-seeded Leopards finished in a tie for fourth in the regular season with a 9-9 league mark but rode the hot hand of sophomore guard Nick Lindner to the title. The Leopards last won a league tournament title in 2000 and are 0-4 in NCAA Tournament play.

The Wildcats edged Providence in the Big East semifinals with the help of a controversial call, but they needed no aid in throttling Xavier in the final to win their second conference crown and the first for veteran coach Jay Wright. Josh Hart won the Big East's sixth man award and enters the tournament on a roll after averaging 17.7 points in the tournament while shooting 72.4 percent from the floor in the past three games.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Wildcats are 1-6 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.
                              * Under is 6-1 in Wildcats last seven neutral site games.
                              * Wildcats are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a ATS win.

                              (9) LSU Tigers vs. (8) North Carolina State Wolfpack (-2, 140.5)

The Tigers’ strength is on the interior, ranking seventh nationally with 6.2 blocked shots per game and 12th in the country in total rebounding (39.2). Jordan Mickey was slowed by a bruised shoulder late in the season but led the SEC in double-doubles (15) and the SEC in rebounding (9.8), and Jarell Martin averaged 22 points in his final six games.

Trevor Lacey finished sixth in the ACC in scoring at 15.8 points and had reached double figures in 16 consecutive games before finishing with just four against Duke. Ralston Turner, who played two seasons at LSU before transferring, averages 13.2 points while Anthony Barber scored 17.6 points per game in a 10-game stretch before suffering a neck injury against the Blue Devils (he has been cleared to return).

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 6-0 in Tigers last six vs. Atlantic Coast.
                              * Tigers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven non-conference games.
                              * Wolfpack are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.

Thursday's NCAAB Midwest Region betting cheat sheet

                              (14) Northeastern Huskies vs. (3) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-12.5, 140)

Ninth-year coach Bill Coen’s squad finished 11-21 a year ago but began this season with a 5-1 mark, including a 76-73 win over Florida State on Nov. 18. Forward Quincy Ford received MVP honors at the CAA tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by Eatherton and guard David Walker, who averages 13.4 points and a team-high 3.5 assists. The Huskies won six of their last seven games but ranked ninth in the CAA in field-goal percentage defense (44.5), which could mean trouble against the sharpshooting Irish.

Notre Dame doesn’t lack for confidence heading into Thursday's second-round matchup with No. 14 seed Northeastern in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament in Pittsburgh. The third-seeded Irish are riding a five-game winning streak highlighted by Saturday’s 90-82 victory over North Carolina in the ACC tournament title game. “Offensively, I feel like we're the best team in the country,” guard Jerian Grant told reporters. “It’s going to take us a long way. You have to guard all five of us.”

                              TRENDS:

                              * Huskies are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.
                              * Fighting Irish are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
                              * Over is 13-5 in Huskies last 18 overall.

                              (11) Texas Longhorns vs. (6) Butler Bulldogs (+2, 123.5)

Texas looked like a bubble team, at best, after two four-game losing streaks during conference play, but the Longhorns won their final two games of the regular season, including an overtime victory over Baylor, and knocked off Texas Tech in the first round of the Big 12 tournament to earn their second straight NCAA Tournament bid and their 16th in 17 years. "I don't think there is any team that would want to play us by just the way we have played the last couple of weeks," Texas coach Rick Barnes told reporters after his team squandered a 16-point lead and lost to Iowa State on a buzzer-beater. "We're good enough to play and beat anybody in the country, and I believe that."

Butler has become synonymous with unexpected runs in the NCAA Tournament, but the sixth-seeded Bulldogs hope to avoid their second one-and-done performance in a week when they take on No. 11 seed Texas in the Midwest Region on Thursday in Pittsburgh, Pa. Butler received a strong seed considering its quarterfinal loss to Xavier in the Big East Tournament. But the Bulldogs got a tough opening draw with the Longhorns, who pushed Iowa State to the brink in the Big 12 championship quarterfinals.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 6-0 in Longhorns last six overall.
                              * Longhorns are 0-6 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games.
                              * Bulldogs are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 NCAA Tournament games.

                              (9) Purdue Boilersmakers vs. (8) Cincinnati Bearcats (+2, 118.5)

A.J. Hammons leads the Boilermakers with 11.8 points on 53.4 percent shooting, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 blocks. Rapheal Davis adds 10.9 points and 2.7 assists and was named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year. Jon Octeus chips in 9.3 points and 2.7 assists for a Boilermakers team that led the Big Ten in field-goal percentage defense (39.3) during league play.

The Bearcats - who led the American Athletic Conference and are ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense - will be a good matchup for a Purdue team that found its defensive identity during Big Ten play. Octavius Ellis leads the Bearcats' balanced offense with 10 points per game on 57.8 percent shooting, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks. Troy Caupain adds 9.5 points and 3.5 assists for a team that had a five-game win streak snapped by defending national champion Connecticut in the AAC tournament.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 5-1 in Boilermakers last six NCAA Tournament games.
                              * Under is 23-9 in Bearcats last 32 neutral site games.
                              * Bearcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall.

                              (16) Hampton Pirates vs. (1) Kentucky Wildcats (-32, 134.5)

The 16th-seeded Pirates defeated Manhattan 74-64 in Tuesday's first round for their fifth straight victory. Hampton's near-impossible task could be even more difficult with leading scorer Dwight Meikle (13.0) and Quinton Chievous (10.3) questionable because of ankle injuries.

Top-seed Kentucky begins the final phase of its quest for a perfect season when it takes on Hampton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Louisville, Ky. “I think I have the best team and the best players,” Wildcats coach John Calipari told reporters. “Doesn’t mean we’re going to win. It means we have the best chance to win.”

                              TRENDS:

                              * Pirates are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
                              * Wildcats are 0-6 ATS in their last six Thursday games.
                              * Under is 12-2 in Wildcats last 14 non-conference games.

Thursday's NCAAB West Region betting cheat sheet

                              (14) Georgia State Panthers vs. (3) Baylor Bears (-9, 127)

The Panthers have not been to the NCAAs since 2001, when they upset Wisconsin in the first round. R.J. Hunter, son of coach Ron Hunter, is a legitimate NBA prospect who averages 19.8 points and Harrow, a Kentucky transfer who missed the conference tournament with a hamstring injury, scores 19.7 per contest.

The Bears played ranked competition in 12 of their 18 conference games, going 7-5 and sweeping eventual Big 12 tournament champion Iowa State while losing three times to runner-up Kansas. Rico Gathers anchors the Big 12’s stingiest defense, ranking fourth nationally at 11.8 rebounds per game.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
                              * Bears are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games following a ATS loss.
                              * Under is 9-3 in Panthers last 12 overall.

                              (15) Texas Southern Tigers vs. (2) Arizona Wildcats (-23.5, 134)

Coach Mike Davis is leading the Tigers back to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year after the Tigers fell to Cal Poly as a No. 15 seed in last season’s first round. Nine players average at least 12.4 minutes per game, including senior point guard Madarious Gibbs, who averages a team-high 14.2 points along with 4.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds.

The second-seeded Wildcats, who have won 11 in a row and 17 of their last 18, routed Oregon 80-52 in Saturday’s Pac-12 tournament title game. Brandon Ashley received MVP honors after averaging 19.7 points as the Wildcats became the first team in seven years to win Pac-12 regular-season and tournament titles.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Wildcats are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games following a S.U. win.
                              * Over is 4-1 in Tigers last five neutral site games.
                              * Over is 4-1 in Wildcats last five NCAA Tournament games.

                              (11) Ole Miss Rebels vs. (6) Xavier Musketeers (-2, 144.5)

Ole Miss, who took top-ranked Kentucky to overtime in January, is led by the backcourt duo of Stefan Moody and Jarvis Summers. The Rebels will have to raise their game defensively against the Musketeers, who shoot 47.3 percent from the field and have five players with at least 29 made 3-pointers. “A lot of times it’s all about matchups in the tournament and who really starts playing their best basketball down the stretch,” Xavier coach Chris Mack told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “. … I really like the way we’re playing.”

The balanced Musketeers won three in a row before losing to Villanova 69-52 in the Big East championship game last Saturday. Xavier looks to cool off the Rebels, who shot 60 percent and scored 62 points in the second half Tuesday to rally from 17 down and beat BYU 94-90 in the first round. Xavier G Dee Davis led the Big East in assists per game (6.1) and needs one to tie Dedrick Finn (481) for fifth on the school’s all-time list.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Under is 8-2 in Musketeers last 10 overall.
                              * Rebels are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
                              * Over is 5-2 in Rebels last seven neutral site games.

                              (10) Ohio State Buckeyes vs. (7) VCU Rams (+4, 137)

Ohio State earned the 10th seed in the West Region after falling to Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament. The Buckeyes, who won their only national title in 1960, are making their seventh straight appearance and 31st overall in the NCAAs. Freshman star D'Angelo Russell paces the Ohio State offense, averaging 19.3 points, and is projected to be a high lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Rising sideline star Shaka Smart brings his speedy VCU team into the NCAA Tournament on the heels of a 71-65 win over Dayton in the Atlantic 10 tournament title game. Smart, who rebuffed several coaching offers to remain at the school over the past few seasons, led the Rams to the Final Four in 2011 and will face Ohio State in a second-round game on Thursday in Portland. This is seventh-seeded VCU's fifth straight year in the Big Dance in Smart's sixth season as head coach.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Rams are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 NCAA Tournament games.
                              * Buckeyes are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 neutral site games.
                              * Over is 6-0 in Buckeyes last six non-conference games.

                              (13) Harvard Crimson vs. (4) North Carolina Tar Heels (-10.5, 133)

While Wesley Saunders gets the bulk of the praise - and rightly so after ranking in the top 10 in the Ivy League in points, rebounds, assists and steals - senior forward Steve Moundou-Missi has been the catalyst for the Crimson's ability to shut down opponents. The conference's Defensive Player of the Year has the athletic ability to defend multiple positions, which will help against North Carolina's balanced inside-outside attack.

"Even in '05 and in '09 when we won the National Championship we lost in the conference tournament," Roy Williams said after the loss to Fighting Irish when asked if he felt his team was jelling. "This team has a chance to make a really good run." The first challenge will involve an experienced Crimson squad that has won a tournament game in each of the last two seasons and has appeared in the event four straight times, the first Ivy League program to do so since Princeton from 1989-92.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Crimson are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
                              * Tar Heels are 6-1 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.
                              * Tar Heels are 1-5 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games.

                              (12) Wofford Terriers vs. (5) Arkansas Razorbacks (-7.5, 136.5)

The Terriers are bound to be a popular upset pick as they enter the tournament having won eight straight and 15 of their last 16 including a 67-64 win over rival Furman in the Southern Conference tournament championship game. "It's different than last year where we knew we would be a higher seed, a 15 seed," senior forward Eric Garcia told reporters. "This year … we are confident going into any game that we can win."

While none of the Razorbacks' players have been to the NCAA Tournament, coach Mike Anderson is no stranger, having made six previous appearances with UAB and Missouri. Arkansas boasts one of the most dynamic duos in the SEC if not the country in Bobby Portis (17.5 points, 8.6 rebounds) and Michael Qualls (15.5 points, 5.3 rebounds), while point guard Rashad Madden (9.7 points, 4.5 assists) is an excellent distributor.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Terriers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall.
                              * Razorbacks are 1-5 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games.
                              * Over is 7-1 in Terriers last eight overall.

Thursday's NCAAB South Region betting cheat sheet

                              (14) UAB Blazers vs. (3) Iowa State Cyclones (-13.5, 143.5)

Robert Brown, a junior transfer from Virginia Tech, was named the tournament MVP and leads the Blazers with 13.1 points. Six players - including freshmen Chris Cokley (eight points per game), William Lee (7.8 points and team-high 5.8 rebounds) and Nick Norton (7.6 points, 3.9 assists) average at least seven points.

A confident - and probably tired - Iowa State team earned its second straight No. 3 seed after winning its second straight Big 12 tournament. "Our schedule definitely helped us for what's upcoming, not only the non-conference schedule, but what we've gone through the last couple weeks," Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg told the Des Moines Register. "You play so many different styles over the course of a season - we're a pretty confident team right now."

                              TRENDS:

                              * Blazers are 0-4 ATS in their last four non-conference games.
                              * Cyclones are 6-0 ATS in their last six vs. Conference USA.
                              * Under is 5-1 in Cyclones last six overall.

                              (11) UCLA Bruins vs. (6) Southern Methodist Mustangs (-3.5, 133)

UCLA, which received an at-large bid, is making its 47th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bruins are coming off a 70-64 loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals. UCLA has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three straight seasons and four times in the last five years.

The Mustangs, who won the AAC regular-season championship, are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993. SMU beat defending national champion Connecticut 62-54 on Sunday to win its first conference tournament championship since 1988, when the Mustangs won the Southwestern Conference.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Bruins are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.
                              * Mustangs are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four non-conference games.
                              * Under is 11-4 in Bruins last 15 overall.

                              (12) Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks vs. (5) Utah Utes (-6.5, 131.5)

With a second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a gaudy regular-season record and last year's first-round upset of VCU, Stephen F. Austin may soon be making itself a national name in college basketball. Stephen F. Austin started the season 1-3, but has won 28 of its last 29 contests.

Closing out close games as been a bit of a problem for Utah lately, with a six-point loss to Arizona and a three-point setback to Oregon in the last few weeks and a 2-3 record this year in games decided by four points or fewer. The loss to the Ducks in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals was especially painful, as the game was tied with just seven seconds left before Oregon's Joseph Young hit the game-winner to beat the buzzer.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Utes are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games.
                              * Under is 7-1 in Lumberjacks last eight games following a ATS win.
                              * Under is 6-2 in Utes last eight overall.

                              (13) Eastern Washington Eagles vs. (4) Georgetown Hoyas (-7.5, 146.5)

Eastern Washington will be in search of its first victory in the NCAA Tournament when it faces fourth-seeded Georgetown on Thursday in Portland, Ore. The 13th-seeded Eagles used a furious second-half rally to capture the Big Sky tournament title Saturday over Montana and secure their second appearance in the Big Dance.

Georgetown, which lost to Xavier in the Big East tournament semifinals, returns to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year absence. The Hoyas dropped their NCAA opener in three of its last four appearances and haven't reached the Sweet Sixteen since going to the Final Four in 2007.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Eagles are 11-1-1 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games.
                              * Hoyas are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
                              * Over is 6-2 in Hoyas last eight non-conference games.

Midwest Regional - No. 15 New Mexico State vs. No. 2 Kansas (CBS, 12:15 p.m.)
                                Venue: CenturyLink Arena
                                Location: Omaha, NE
                                Betting Odds: Kansas -10 ½, 132

Kansas (26-8 SU, 17-15-1 ATS) is making its 26th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, including the 12th straight under head coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks were on their way to a Big 12 tournament title, building a 17-point lead over Iowa State last Saturday, but the Cyclones rallied for a 70-66 to capture the automatic bid. Junior forward Perry Ellis has been dealing with a knee injury, while scoring seven points on 2-for-10 shooting in the loss to Iowa State. KU has covered just two of their last nine games, but owns a solid 5-2-1 ATS record when listed as a double-digit favorite. The Jayhawks have struggled to cover numbers in the tournament since the 2012 National Championship, posting a 1-5 ATS mark in the last six tourney contests.

New Mexico State (23-10 SU, 8-5 ATS) is back in the Big Dance for the fourth straight season, as the Aggies fell in overtime last March to San Diego State, 73-69 as eight-point underdogs. The Aggies claimed the Western Athletic Conference championship with a pair of wins in the conference tournament over Cal-State Bakersfield and Seattle. Four Aggies are averaging double-figures, led by forwards Remi Barry (13.3 ppg) and Pascal Siakam (13.0 ppg), while NMSU is riding a 13-game winning streak. The Aggies covered in five of seven opportunities as an underdog this season, including as a double-digit ‘dog at Baylor in December.

East Regional - No. 10 Georgia vs. No. 7 Michigan State (TruTv, 12:40 p.m.)
                                Venue: Time Warner Cable Arena
                                Location: Charlotte, NC
                                Betting Odds: Michigan State -5 ½, 127

This almost seems like more of a New Year’s Day bowl between SEC and Big 10 foes as opposed to a second round NCAA tournament game. Michigan State (23-11 SU, 18-16 ATS) enters the Big Dance with nine non-conference wins, all against teams that didn’t qualify for the tournament, while getting tripped up by Texas Southern at home as 24-point favorites in December. Tom Izzo’s club closed the regular season with nine wins in the final 12 games, while beating a solid Maryland team in the Big 10 semifinals before falling to Wisconsin in the tournament final. The Spartans weren’t a good bet as a favorite of four points or more since late December, going 3-7 ATS.

Georgia (21-11 SU, 18-11-2 ATS) was the one team that had a legitimate shot to hand Kentucky its first loss of the season, as the Bulldogs led the Wildcats by nine points with nine minutes remaining in regulation earlier this month. UGA couldn’t hold on in a 72-64 setback, but the Bulldogs are back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011. Mark Fox’s club put together an impressive 9-3-2 ATS record in the underdog role, including victories at Ole Miss, Alabama, and Texas A&M, while covering twice against Kentucky. Past knocking off Ole Miss twice, the Bulldogs don’t own any other wins over teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament.

East Regional - No. 12 Wyoming vs. No. 5 Northern Iowa (TBS, 1:40 p.m.)
                                Venue: Key Arena
                                Location: Seattle, WA
                                Betting Odds: Northern Iowa -6, 110 ½

A pair of teams that won mid-major conference tournaments meet up for a 10:40 AM local start in Seattle. Northern Iowa (30-3 SU, 19-9-3 ATS) finished in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference, but the Panthers knocked off top-seed Wichita State in the conference championship to claim the automatic bid to the Big Dance. Two of UNI’s three losses came to tournament teams, falling to Wichita State in the final regular season game and losing at VCU in overtime back in December. The Panthers have taken care of business as a favorite recently, putting together an 8-1-1 ATS record the last 10 when laying points.

Wyoming (25-9 SU, 10-18-1 ATS) began the season on fire at 15-2, but lost five of its final eight regular season contests. The Cowboys rolled to a Mountain West tournament title by beating Utah State, Boise State, and San Diego State, as Larry Shyatt’s team edged the Aztecs, 45-43 as six-point underdogs. Wyoming has been a solid ‘over’ bet in the past month, cashing in nine of the past 11 games, while the only victory in non-conference play over a tournament team came against New Mexico State in late November.

Midwest Regional - No. 12 Buffalo vs. No. 5 West Virginia (TNT, 2:10 p.m.)
                                Venue: Nationwide Arena
                                Location: Columbus, OH
                                Betting Odds: West Virginia -4 ½, 150

A popular underdog the public is looking at in the second round is Buffalo (23-9 SU, 16-13 ATS), who beat Akron and Central Michigan en route to a Mid-American Conference tournament championship. The Bulls lost three straight games in mid-February, but Bobby Hurley’s club is riding a season-high eight-game winning streak, while covering six times in this stretch. Buffalo covered as huge underdogs in non-conference play at Kentucky and Wisconsin, as the lone win over a tournament team came against Robert Morris on the road in December.

West Virginia (23-9 SU, 17-13 ATS) will look to cure the ills of the Big 12 after Baylor, Iowa State, and Texas were bounced on Thursday. The Mountaineers enter the tournament with losses in three of their past four games, including a 10-point defeat to Baylor in the Big 12 tournament. WVU has cashed nine of its last 13 in the favorite role, as Bob Huggins’ squad is back in the Big Dance for the first time since 2012, when the Mountaineers lost to Gonzaga by 23 points. Guard Juwan Staten (14 ppg) is expected back in the lineup for WVU after missing the last three games with a knee injury.
