        • Top 25 roundup: Krzyzewski gets 1,000th win

          NEW YORK -- Coach K reached 1K.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski became the first Division 1 coach to win 1,000 games, guiding the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils to a 77-68 win over the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

"We were so gritty in the last 10 minutes," Krzyzewski said. "It was tough to get involved with 1,000. I was just trying to survive this game, which is how you get to 1,000."

In addition to the record number of wins, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils (17-2) to four national championships, 13 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 11 Final Fours. He also coached the U.S. Olympic Team to two gold medals.

Freshman guard Tyus Jones led the Blue Devils with 22 points and six assists. Center Jahlil Okafor, the nation's top-scoring freshman, added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Sir' Dominic Pointer topped St. John's (13-6) with 21 points and guard Rysheed Jordan added 18 points.

          Virginia 50, Virginia Tech 47

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Guard Justin Anderson sparked a late rally with eight points in a three-minute span in the second half, and the second-ranked Cavaliers escaped with a victory.

Anderson scored a team-high 12 points, most coming in the final six minutes. He also blocked Hokies guard Malik Muller's 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, helping preserve the Cavaliers' three-point lead.

The Cavaliers (19-0, 7-0 ACC) remained one of two unbeaten teams in Division I, joining Kentucky. But their 19th victory was much more difficult than anyone had imagined. The win wasn't secured until guard Adam Smith's deep 3-pointer at the buzzer spun in and out of the basket. Smith scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Hokies (8-11, 0-6).

          Ohio State 82, Indiana 70

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Guard D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points and handed out 10 assists, and forward Jae'Sean Tate added 20 points to lead the Buckeyes past the 23rd-ranked Hoosiers.

Russell hit nine of 15 shots from the field, had six rebounds and made key baskets or assists to keep Indiana at bay. Tate was right there with him. He connected on 9 of 10 from the field, shared the team lead in rebounds with six and scored key buckets in the final minutes to extend the lead for Ohio State (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten).

Point guard Yogi Farrell scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to pace Indiana (15-5, 5-2).

          Wichita State 74, Drake 40

WICHITA, Kan. -- With 11 minutes to play, Wichita State's lineup consisted of three freshmen, a junior transfer and a walk-on. That was one of many indications the 14th-ranked Shockers are rolling again through the Missouri Valley Conference, this time beating the overmatched Bulldogs.

The Shockers (18-2, 8-0 MVC) led all 40 minutes and never gave Drake (4-16, 1-7) any hope. Wichita State led 36-19 at halftime and buried the Bulldogs by shooting better than 60 percent most of the second half.

Junior guard Ron Baker led Wichita State with 15 points. Senior guard Tekele Cotton added 10.

          Butler 77, Seton Hall 57

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Bulldogs used a staggering 27-3, second-half run to beat the 24th-ranked Pirates for the second time in 12 days.

Butler (15-6, 5-3 Big East) trailed 37-34 when it began the game-deciding blitz that was capped by a layup from guard Roosevelt Jones, giving the Bulldogs a 61-40 lead with 8:09 remaining.

Center Andrew Chrabascz led the Bulldogs with 16 points, guard Kellen Dunham added 15, Jones scored 12 and point guard Alex Barlow had 11. Forward Brandon Mobley paced Seton Hall (13-6, 3-4) with 15 points.

          Louisville 80, Pittsburgh 68

PITTSBURGH -- Terry Rozier scored 26 points as the 10th-ranked Cardinals got back on track with an victory over the Panthers.

Rozier scored 18 points in the first half when Louisville shot a blazing 70.8 percent from the field in building a 40-30 halftime lead. The sophomore guard notched his fifth game with at least 20 points this season.

Junior forward Montezl Harrell scored 18 points, and senior guard Chris Jones added 17 points and nine assists for Louisville (15-4, 3-3 ACC), which had lost two of its previous three games. Sophomore forward Jamel Artis scored 18 points for Pitt (13-7, 3-4).

          Northern Iowa 54, Illinois 53

NORMAL, Ill. -- Down 12 in the second half, the 20th-ranked Panthers rallied for an improbable win. Reserve forward Nate Buss drilled a 3-pointer from the right corner with 5.2 seconds left for the decisive points.

Guard Daishon Knight had a chance to win it for Illinois State (12-8, 4-4 Missouri Valley Conference), but his driving layup under duress hit the front rim and bounced off as time expired.

Forward Seth Tuttle finished with game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds for Northern Iowa (18-2, 7-1). The Panthers won their seventh consecutive game after opening conference play with a loss at Evansville. Reserve guard Bobby Hunter paced the Redbirds with 13 points, while center Reggie Lynch and guard Paris Lee each scored 12.

Notre Dame 81, North Carolina State 78 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Guard Jerian Grant scored 25 points, and the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish, who scurried to force overtime, topped the Wolfpack. Grant blocked a 3-point try by North Carolina State guard Trevor Lacey at the end.

Guard Demetrius Jackson and forwards Pat Connaughton and V.J. Beachem added 11 points apiece for Notre Dame (19-2, 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Irish forward Zach Auguste had 10 points.

Lacey tallied 13 points to lead North Carolina State (13-8, 4-4). Forwards Kyle Washington and Caleb Martin had 12 points each, while guard Ralston Turner scored 11 and forward Cody Martin had 10.

          Villanova 71, Creighton 50

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- A 15-0 run to open the game set the tone as the fourth-ranked Wildcats led wire-to-wire for a victory over the Bluejays.

Villanova (18-2, 5-2 Big East) maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half, going up by as many as 24 while not allowing Creighton to get closer than a dozen points over the final 23 minutes. Senior guard Darrun Hilliard led Villanova with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, while junior point guard Ryan Arcidiacono added 10.

Creighton (9-12, 0-8 Big East) lost its ninth game in a row. Guard James Milliken topped the Bluejays with 13 points.

          Maryland 68, Northwestern 67

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Guard/forward Dez Wells made a put-back with 1.4 seconds left to give the 13th-ranked Terrapins a 68-67 win over the Wildcats.

Guard Melo Trimble had 19 of his 27 points in the second half for the Terrapins (18-3, 6-2 Big Ten). The Terrapins trailed by 11 points with 3:45 left.

The Wildcats (10-10, 1-6) took their sixth loss in a row. Guard Bryant McIntosh had 21 points to pace Northwestern, which also led by 11 points at halftime.

          Utah 77, Washington 56

SALT LAKE CITY -- Guard Dakarai Tucker scored a career-high 19 points, and guard Brandon Taylor added 14 to lift the 12th-ranked Utes to a win over the Huskies.

Tucker and Taylor combined to make eight 3-pointers, leading Utah (16-3, 6-1 Pac-12) to its 15th straight home victory dating to last season, who saw a three-game winning streak snapped. The Utes led from start to finish and shot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) on 3-point shots.

Guard Andrew Andrews had 19 points to lead Washington, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped. Center Robert Upshaw chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and five blocks for the Huskies (14-5, 3-4).

Game of the Day: Syracuse at North Carolina
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syracuse Orange at University of North Carolina Tar Heels (OFF, OFF)

Brice Johnson does not lead North Carolina in any major categories, but he just might be the team's most important player. Coming off back-to-back terrific outings, Johnson hopes to fuel the 15th-ranked Tar Heels past visiting Syracuse when the teams square off Monday. Johnson scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting against Wake Forest on Wednesday before recording 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting versus Florida State on Saturday, prompting rave reviews from leading scorer Marcus Paige.

“He played great. ... That’s the type of production - we’ll take that all day," Paige said. "He’s still coming along defensively. He’s better than he’s ever been. So he’s getting there, but his ceiling his so high, too, that we like to see him build on performances." The Tar Heels have won 10 of their last 11 games, while the Orange have dropped two of three following a seven-game winning streak. Both teams are dealing with injuries as Syracuse is without forward Chris McCullough (ACL) while North Carolina is without reserves Joel Berry (groin) and Theo Pinson (foot), not to mention Johnson playing through a back strain.

ABOUT SYRACUSE (14-6, 5-2 ACC): Despite 23 points and eight rebounds from Rakeem Christmas, Syracuse dropped a 66-62 decision to Miami (Fla.) on Saturday as the team shot 8-of-19 from the foul line. "You can ask a million questions," coach Jim Boeheim said to reporters afterwards. "Overall, this game was one thing, that's it, nothing else. We make some free throws, we win the game, bottom line." The shorthanded Orange used only six players - four of which played all 40 minutes - including all three of their double-digit scorers on the season - Christmas (18.3), Trevor Cooney (14.1) and Michael Gbinije (10.7).

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (16-4, 6-1): The Tar Heels rank in the top five nationally in both rebounds and assists with J.P. Tokoto serving as a major factor in both categories. The junior forward averages 9.1 points, five rebounds and a team-high 4.1 assists, while four other North Carolina players average double figures in points, led by Paige's 13.8. Kennedy Meeks is second on the team in scoring (12.8) and tops in rebounding (8.3), although he only has surpassed eight rebounds once in his last six games.

              TRENDS:

              * The Orange are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall
              * The Tar Heels are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall
              * The Over is 4-1 in the Tar Heels' last five games
              * The Over is 5-1-1 in the Orange's last seven after a SU loss

                • Tournament Forecast

                  January 23, 2015

2015 NCAA Tournament – Projected Field thru action on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015.

This is our first installment of bracketology for the 2015 NCAA Tournament and comes a couple weeks into conference play.

Before jumping into this season’s breakdown let’s take a look back at last year’s first installment which we published on Jan. 8, 2014 did very well projecting the field, especially considering how early it was posted.

The one area we struggled some were the smaller conferences: there were 22 conferences that received one bid & we only projected 10 of the 22 correct – that area of a bracketology is clearly the toughest.

After those 22 teams are accounted for we are left with 46 open bids & we nailed 36 of those 46 – here are more details on the 10 we missed (teams in italic & bold we included in our projection but they missed field):

SMU: in our “first five out” category meaning they narrowly missed our field
St. Joseph’s: earned the A10 automatic bid
                  Florida State: missed field
                  Georgetown: missed field
Providence: earned the Big East automatic bid
                  Minnesota: missed field
Stanford: in our “first five out” category
California: in our “first five out” category
                  Missouri: missed field
                  Arkansas: missed field
BYU: in our “first five out” category

To summarize four of our “first five out” teams wound up earning a bid; two teams earned their conference’s automatic bid otherwise there is a good chance they would have missed field; and five teams we projected in did not earn a bid.

Considering this projection was posted 2 months in advance of Selection Sunday those results are excellent – add in fact that our final bracketology of last year only missed on one team & this exercise proves valuable.

Now that we have some context on last year let’s jump into the 2015 projection! Below we breakdown each conference into three buckets initially (with a fourth bucket “life support” coming in February as the picture continues to sort itself out):

                  1) Automatic Bid
                  2) Looking Good - teams highly likely to play well enough in the regular season to earn a bid
                  3) Need Wins - teams that are firmly on the bubble and will need to play well to close their season

**Teams are listed in the s-curve order I see them now within conference**
**For this edition, to add some more color to each team I will include their SBPI ranking through action on Thursday January 22. For one bid leagues I will also show the SBPI ranking of the 2nd team in the conference to give a feel for their competition**

**Last key to remember when looking this over – I always lean towards INCLUDING teams in my breakdown that have any shot at earning a bid; some listed are extreme longshots but I would prefer including any potential candidates vs. adding them later out of blue. Leveraging that idea further I will lean towards keeping teams in say “Need Wins” versus moving them up to “Looking Good” till I feel certain they are a lock to earn a bid – do not want to slide teams down levels, only up. Many teams are closer to being left off completely versus moving up a level at this point in the season**

America East: Stony Brook #77 (Albany #201)

                  American Athletic: Cincinnati #47
                  Looking Good: SMU #53
Need Wins: Tulsa #47, Temple #56, UConn #100, Memphis #131

                  Atlantic Ten: VCU #8
Need Wins: Davidson #41, Dayton #75, George Washington #54, Rhode Island #74

                  ACC: Virginia #11
Looking Good: Duke #7, North Carolina #17, Louisville #14, Notre Dame #174
Need Wins: Miami #59, NC State #24, Syracuse #78, Pittsburgh #70

Atlantic Sun: North Florida #136 (Northern Kentucky #191)

                  Big 12: Kansas #2

Need Wins: Seton Hall #38, Xavier #15, St. John’s #64

                  Big Ten: Wisconsin #13
Looking Good: Indiana #82, Maryland #52
Need Wins: Michigan State #31, Iowa #29, Ohio State #36, Illinois #40, Michigan #58, Nebraska #132, Minnesota #42

Big West: Long Beach State #81 (UCSB #62)

                  Colonial: William & Mary #109 (Hofstra #165)

Conference USA: Old Dominion #61 (Western Kentucky #55)
If OLD DOMINION does not win their conference tournament they would still BE ALIVE to earn an at-large bid. The Monarchs have gone 2-0 vs. Top 50 RPI teams including a win over LSU on a neutral court & a home win over VCU.

Horizon: Cleveland State #57 (Green Bay #90)

                  Ivy: Yale #28 (Harvard #68)

                  MAAC: Iona #146 (Canisius #175)

MEAC: North Carolina Central #95 (Norfolk State #163)

Missouri Valley : Wichita State #6
If WICHITA STATE does not win their conference tournament they would still RECEIVE a bid, thus taking a spot away from the at-large field.
                  Need Wins: Northern Iowa #86

Mountain West: San Diego State #22
                  Need Wins: Colorado State #71

Northeast: St. Francis NY #159 (St. Francis PA #158)

Ohio Valley: Murray State #123 (Morehead State #84)

                  Looking Good: Utah #12
Need Wins: Stanford #25, Washington #143, Oregon State #108, UCLA #32, Oregon #106

Patriot: Colgate #183 (Holy Cross #142)

                  SEC: Kentucky #1
                  Looking Good: Arkansas #27
                  Need Wins: Georgia #39, LSU #103, Tennessee #96, Texas A&M #44, Ole Miss #43, Alabama #51, South Carolina #34, Florida #20

                  Southern: Wofford #98 (Chattanooga #125)

Sun Belt: Georgia Southern #114 (Georgia State #122)

                  West Coast: Gonzaga #10
If GONZAGA does not win their conference tournament they would still RECEIVE a bid, thus taking one away from the current at-large pool.
                  Need Wins: BYU #21, St Mary’s #48

WAC: New Mexico State #91 (Chicago State #190)

                  FIELD: 68

                  AUTOMATIC BIDS: 32

                  Looking Good: 15

Currently I project 47 of the 68 bids are earned.

                  Need Wins: 43

That leaves 43 teams that are in the mix for 21 open bids.

Keep in mind however that DOES NOT include the upsets we will see during Conference Tournament week where teams that are LOCKS from smaller conferences lose a game in their conference tournament and hence use an at-large bid on themselves.

For the remaining 21 open bids this is the way I see it currently, which will obviously be very fluid (listed in conference alphabetical order applying s-curve within conference):

                  Davidson
                  Dayton
                  Miami, Fla

                  Illinois
                  Michigan
                  Oregon State
                  UCLA

Multiple bid conferences (total of 47 bids in 11 conferences; 21 single bid conferences = 68 bids):

I have included the Top 36 teams in the SBPI this week & will continue that format going forward. Why? I figured there are 32 automatic bids & 36 at-large bids given out on Selection Sunday – so including my Top 36 here can give a good feel for if your team has what it takes to potentially earn an at-large come mid-March.

Here are additional teams of note that did not make the SBPI Top 36 but were ranked inside Top 36 by at least one of other five sources:

                    #37 Seton Hall (DUN #27)
                    #40 Georgia (KP #28, BPI #21, RPI #24)
                    #41 Texas A&M (RPI #35)
                    #45 Ole Miss (KP #34)
                    #48 Davidson (KP #33, BPI #34, SAG #29)
                    #50 Miami, FL (SAG #25)
                    #56 Cincinnati (KP #32, RPI #28, DUN #31)
                    #58 Maryland (KP #30, BPI #24, RPI #14, SAG #23, DUN #16)
                    #66 SMU (KP #21, BPI #28, RPI #19, SAG #27, DUN #22)
                    #68 Syracuse (DUN #34)
                    #69 Indiana (RPI #31, SAG #34, DUN #33)
                    #72 Colorado State (RPI #29)
                    #75 Dayton (BPI #29, RPI #26, DUN #25)
                    #79 Northern Iowa (KP #19, BPI #16, RPI #23, SAG #28)
                    #90 LSU (KP #35, BPI #36)
                    #148 Notre Dame (KP #13, BPI #12, RPI #36, SAG #11, DUN #9)

Let’s take a closer look at Notre Dame as they are a big time outlier compared to the polls, other power indices & record. If you followed my NCAAF SBPI this season you will most likely draw comparisons between these Fighting Irish and the Florida State Seminoles, who I had ranked in the mid-50s most of the season – much lower obviously than any other poll or power index. Why is ND checking in so low? Strength of schedule is the culprit no doubt. I think the better question is to ask Ken Pomeroy how he can have the Irish ranked #13 with the following metrics, per his site:

Irish offense ranked #1 vs. the 173rd toughest schedule of opponent’s defense
Irish defense ranked #153 vs. the 284th toughest schedule of opponent’s offense

DOES THAT EQUAL Irish overall #13 vs. the 255th toughest schedule?

I do not see how those metrics add up to his ranking. And since his website is really the only one of the five sources I compare my metrics to that offers up some numbers/support behind their rankings I cannot compare others to mine. But it’s seems fairly obvious to me his support does not equal the ranking he gives Notre Dame.

New this week, but an analysis we showed in our NCAAF SBPI articles that people enjoyed, is the variance report that shows team’s movement over the last week.

Today we will show team’s that had a 50 spot or greater change in their ranking inclusive of all conferences:

                    CHANGE +/- 50 (AS OF 1/25/14)
Team Jan. 18 Jan. 25 Change
                    Prairie View A&M 176 257 (81)
                    Texas Christian 293 213 80
                    Southern 134 209 (75)
                    DePaul 200 134 66
                    Akron 191 136 55
                    Lamar 155 210 (55)
                    Idaho 194 247 (53)
                    North Carolina Central 72 125 (53)
                    Northern Colorado 297 244 53
                    Texas Tech 215 162 53
                    USC Upstate 216 269 (53)
                    Wagner 140 193 (53)
                    Norfolk State 129 179 (50)

As we can see most of the big moves were in the lower level conferences where a very strong or weak performance can impact a team’s full season metrics typically more than higher level conference teams.

Strength of conference & breakdown of Top 36 by conference:

Listed above are the Top 13 conferences in the nation.

For this week, and moving forward, I have added in a new column to this portion of the article that shows the average rating of every team in a conference. To further clarify these figures, for example, the Big East, whom retains the #1 spot again, has an average rating of 304.9 for the 10 teams in their conference.

By looking at the first matrix in this article we can see that 304.9 average rating would fall between the 34th best team in country Iowa State & the 35th best team in the country Ohio State. The Big 12 remains right on the heels of the Big East for the top conference in the country according to SBPI, falling just 1.0 short of taking over that spot. What is the biggest driver between these two conferences?

The bottom of the Big 12, namely Texas Tech (#162) & TCU (#213) are both rated well below the worst Big East team DePaul (#134). In addition the 2nd worst Big East team is Creighton, who checks in at #65 with Marquette just one spot ahead of the Blue Jays at #64. So measuring top to bottom the Big East is the strongest conference in the country – a lot of which is driven by only having one awful team in the SBPI while many other conferences have multiple teams below DePaul.

Next up let’s look at the Top 20 non-Power 6 (ACC, B12, B10, BE, P12, SEC) conference teams:

                    Cleveland State 257.3 70 - - - - -

Examining this group closer as far as NCAA Tournament at-large bids go it’s very unlikely any teams outside the Top 5 (VCU, Wichita State, Gonzaga, San Diego State & BYU) would earn an at-large bid should they lose in their conference tournament – especially if that loss came before the championship game. And of those five the top 3 are locks to be dancing with or without the automatic bid; San Diego State would be likely to earn a bid but not a lock should they lose in their conference tournament; BYU likely needs to at least reach the championship game in the WCC Tournament to feel good about their chances. Keep in mind there is of course a lot of games to be played – but for these teams to earn at-large bids a lot of their work, for good or bad, was completed in the OOC portion of their schedule.

                    • Cornhuskers visit Ann Arbor

                      January 26, 2015

Nebraska Cornhuskers (12-7) at Michigan Wolverines (12-8)

Crisler Center - Ann Arbor, MI
                      Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                      Sportsbook.ag Line: Michigan -4

Michigan looks to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss on Saturday when it hosts Nebraska on Tuesday night.

John Beilein’s team really struggled in the non-conference season, but the Wolverines (7-10-1 ATS, 11-6 UNDER) have started to play their best basketball of the season. On Saturday, Michigan had a chance to win against double-digit-favorite Wisconsin, taking the Badgers to overtime before falling 69-64. This is not a good sign for Tuesday, considering the Wolverines are 1-5 ATS following an SU loss this season.

The Cornhuskers (6-9-1 ATS, 8-4 UNDER) have won four of their past five games (4-0-1 ATS), including a 79-77 win over 2-point favorite Michigan State on Saturday. They haven't been bothered by tired legs either, going 9-1 SU (4-4 ATS) when playing with 0-to-2 days' rest this season.

But Nebraska is not a good road team at 1-4 SU (1-3-1 ATS), where it has scored a meager 60.8 PPG. It has also yet to win in this series since joining the Big Ten, going 0-4 SU, but 2-2 ATS.

The game in Ann Arbor last season was completely dominated by Michigan who led 49-21 at half and cruised to a 79-50 win. SG Caris LeVert was outstanding for the Wolverines with 16 points (5-of-7 FG), seven rebounds and five assists, but he suffered a season-ending foot injury earlier this month.

The Cornhuskers have a subpar offense this season at 65.3 PPG on 43.4% FG (30.5% threes) and average a meager 10.1 APG with 13.2 TOPG. The defense of Nebraska has helped the team overcome its offensive struggles, as it limits opponents to 61.4 PPG on 38.1% FG (30.0% threes). The biggest reason for the offensive struggles is the inability to share the ball, and the fact that the Huskers have not been able to find a third scorer.

SG Terran Petteway (19.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.2 SPG) and SF Shavon Shields (16.7 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.2 SPG) are one of the best scoring duos in the country, but they are both much better when they are driving to the hoop. Petteway was awful in Ann Arbor last season (5 points, 2-of-10 FG, 4 turnovers) and Shields played well offensively (team-high 13 points), but contributed only one rebound and zero assists in his 28 minutes.

PF Walter Pitchford (7.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG) is a guy that has to step up if the Cornhuskers are going to make a run in Big Ten play. Despite his 6-foot-10 frame, he has the ability to shoot from long range, but after knocking down 41% threes last season, he's dropped to a 31% three-point clip this season. Pitchford is also coming off a game where he failed to score in four minutes before being ejected for throwing an elbow. If Pitchford, whose hometown is Grand Rapids, MI, cannot stay on the court, it will be very difficult to beat Michigan.

It has been a real struggle for the Wolverines' offense this season, and it has gotten even more difficult with top scorer, SG Caris LeVert (14.9 PPG), missing the remainder of the season due to an injury.

Michigan scores only 64.9 PPG on 41.2% FG, but makes 8.2 threes per game on a strong 35.4% clip. Its assists are low (12.2 APG), but this team has an outstanding 9.9 turnovers per game. The team plays solid defense with just 62.1 PPG allowed, but opponents are shooting 43.8% FG and 34.5% threes.

SG Zak Irvin (13.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 36% threes) is emerging as the go-to guy on the offense to fill in for LeVert. He is more of a slasher, but he is continuing to develop a shot from the three-point line. He came off the bench against the Cornhuskers last season at home and scored 16 points (4-of-9 threes) in just 19 minutes of action.

Sophomore PG Derrick Walton Jr. (10.7 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.0 APG, 1.2 SPG) has done a nice job of keeping the team together as a leader. He does a nice job of limiting his turnovers (1.8 TOPG), which is huge for a player who constantly has the ball in his hands. But he needs to do a better job finding the open man with only five assists and eight turnovers in the past three games combined.

Freshman PF Ricky Doyle (6.8 PPG, 65% FG, 3.0 RPG in 18.2 MPG) is going to have to step up and become a third scorer for the team. He has great size in the paint at 6-foot9, 245 pounds, and does a nice job of getting position on the block. However, he has to become a much better rebounder for a team that has really struggled to win the battle on the boards with a minus-2.0 RPG margin for the season.

Michigan cannot afford to give up many second opportunities, especially considering it will need as many possessions as it can get in order to raise its scoring average.

                      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- NBA games in Manhattan/Brooklyn were postponed Monday night because of the blizzard in that area. One game will be made up in March, one in April.

-- Washington Huskies dismissed center Robert Upshaw for off-court reasons; he was the #1 shot blocker in America.

-- Alex Rodriguez cashes a $6M bonus when he hits six more home runs; not at all surprising that his slimy employers don't want to pay it, since they can't cash in on it because ARod used PEDs. Pay the man!!!!

-- Iowa State 89, Texas 86-- Longhorns made 10-14 behind arc in second half to make this a much closer game than it was most of way.

-- North Carolina 93, Syracuse 83-- Orangemen used their subs a total of 23:00, got no points, two rebounds from them. How do they not have more depth?

-- Reds signed C Devin Mesoraco to a 4-year, $28M extension. Good catchers are hard to find and are in great demand.
