Game of the Day: Kansas at Texas
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (OFF, OFF)

Kansas has claimed at least a share of the last 10 Big 12 regular-season titles, although the challenge of winning another will be no easy task considering six of the league’s 10 teams currently find themselves among the top 25. Two of them square off on Saturday when the 14th-ranked Jayhawks visit No. 18 Texas. Kansas followed last Saturday’s 86-81 loss at No. 12 Iowa State with a thrilling 85-78 home win versus No. 20 Oklahoma, rallying late after blowing a 20-point first-half lead.

The Jayhawks have won six of their last seven against the Longhorns, although their two meetings last year produced drastically different results. Texas cruised to an 81-69 victory at home on Feb. 1 before closing 2013-14 with a 7-7 finish, which included Kansas’ 85-54 rout three weeks later that served as the Longhorns’ largest margin of defeat since 2005. Texas has rebounded nicely since back-to-back losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, pounding No. 17 West Virginia by 27 at home last Saturday before defeating TCU by 18 on the road two days later.

            TV: 2 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT KANSAS (15-3 SU, 11-6 ATS, 10-6 O/U): Frank Alexander (8.3 points, 5.8 rebounds), who was benched for most of the second half of Monday’s loss due to inconsistent effort, provided 13 boards – including a season-high seven offensive rebounds – in 23 minutes on Monday. “Let’s be honest, Perry (Ellis) and Jamari (Traylor) are great, but they don’t give us the physical presence like Cliff potentially does. We need that, it changes our team,” coach Bill Self told the Kansas City Star. Fellow freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. (8.6 points) took about a month to earn regular playing time, but is averaging 13.7 points over his last nine games after failing to crack double digits in any of his first nine contests.

ABOUT TEXAS (14-4 SU, 10-6 ATS, 3-8 O/U): The Longhorns figure to challenge Alexander’s motor as much as any team can in the conference as they rank second in the nation in blocks (7.7) and rebounding margin (plus-12.2) and third in field-goal percentage defense (34.4). Much of the credit for those gaudy marks goes to 6-11 freshman Myles Turner (team-leading averages of 11.8 points, 6.8 rebounds and a conference-best 2.7 blocks) and 6-9 forward Cameron Ridley (8.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks). Isaiah Taylor (11.4 points), who went 10-of-40 from the field in his first four games back from a broken left wrist, tallied 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting on Monday to go along with seven boards and six assists.

            TRENDS:

*Jayhawks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600
*Longhorns are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
*Over is 18-6 in Jayhawks last 24 games following a ATS win.
*Under is 5-1 in Longhorns last 6 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.

            • College basketball Top 25 Saturday betting cheat sheet

              (1) Kentucky Wildcats at South Carolina Gamecocks (+11)

*Andrew Harrison has not always been the most loved player, but he is ready to put that behind him. "I've heard it all. I'm just starting to get my confidence back knowing I'm the starting point or whatever and knowing I can play as well as anybody."

*Since winning their final seven non-conference games – including the victory over Iowa State – the Gamecocks have shot 29.2 percent from 3-point range. “We haven’t handled success real good,” coach Frank Martin said.

              (14) Kansas Jayhawks at (18) Texas Longhorns (-3.5)

*The Jayhawks are far from the tallest team you will see and that is why they are practicing their passes down low. "
We actually have drills in practice where the only passes we can throw are lobs,” coach Bill Self says. “We spend a lot of time emphasizing that.”

*The Longhorns have posted a double-digit rebounding margin 13 times and rejected at least eight shots 11 times this season.

TCU Horned Frogs at (17) West Virginia Mountaineers (-9.5)

*In order for the Horned Frog to win, they will need to control the glass. In TCU's 14 victories this season, the Frogs have out-rebounded the opposition by an average of 10.5 boards. In its four losses, TCU is getting out-rebounded by an average of 8.7 rebounds a game.

              *
Coach Huggins preaches that his teams need to outwork their opponents, something the team has been inconsistent with this season. "[Texas] just outworked us,” guard Gary Browne said. “You see the rebounds. They got us by more than 10. It's something we know we have to do.”

Florida State Seminoles at (15) North Carolina Tar Heels (-16.5)

*One needs to wonder when the grind will catch up with the Seminoles, as coach Leonard Hamilton said the team has had “two or three days off” in the last 25 days.

*Freshman guard Justin Jackson is starting to put it together. “At the beginning of the season, I thought too much,” Jackson told reporters. “I tried not to mess up. Now I’m just playing and if the shot is open, I take it. If not, I pass the ball or set a screen.”

              (12) Iowa State Cyclones at Texas Tech Red Raiders (+9.5)

*Iowa State’s has had four different leading scorers in their five conference games the team has had four different leading scorers. The Cyclones have had eight different players lead them in scoring this season.

*The shots haven't been falling for Tech since the beginning of conference play, with TTU averaging just 55.0 points per game on .346 pct. shooting from the field.

              (20) Oklahoma Sooners at (21) Baylor Bears (-2)

              *
Buddy Hield buried four 3-pointers and had his only double-double this season with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting with Baylor.

*If Baylor will look to avenge their loss to Oklahoma earlier this month, they will need secondary scoring. two players combined for 41 points (65 percent) of the teams offense in the first game against the Sooners.

              (5) Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan Wolverines (+10.5)

*Since taking over the starting point guard position, Bronson Koenig has averaged 12.0 ppg with his 4.33 A/TO ratio second in the NCAA.

*The Wolverines will be without Jr. Chris LeVert for the remainder of the season. LeVert has started his last 55 games for the Wolverines and was leading the team in scoring, rebounds, assists, steals and minutes.

Richmond Spiders at (22) Dayton Flyers (-5.5)

*The Spiders have been falling apart on the road this season, being outscored by 7.5 points while going 0-6 SU (2-4 ATS)

*Despite the Flyers not boasting a single player over 6'6", they have only been outrebounded by 1.5 rebounds per game in their past nine.

Pacific Tigers at (3) Gonzaga Bulldogs (-24.5)

*Despite going a mere 2-6 straight up in their last eight, Pacific is only sporting an average scoring margin of -3.5.

*Gonzaga has now joined in the analytics trend. “I find it so fascinating. It’s a different aspect you can learn from,” said Kevin Pangos, who rarely paid attention to analytics before this season."

              (7) Arizona Wildcats at California Golden Bears (+12.5)

*Coach Cuonzo Martin continues to try an instill a new mentality for the Cal program. “He wants us to have more pride, especially on the defensive end,” senior forward Dwight Tarwater said. “Coming out with more of a sense of pride and toughness.”

Arizona State Sun Devils at (25) Stanford Cardinal (-6.5)

*Arizona State’s bench has proven to be a huge asset this season. The Sun Devils' bench is averaging 26.6 points, led by forward Jonathan Gilling (7.8).

              • Saturday's Top Action

                January 24, 2015

KANSAS JAYHAWKS (15-3) at TEXAS LONGHORNS (14-4)

                Tip-off: Saturday, 2:00 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Texas -3.5

Two of the top teams in the Big 12 clash on Saturday as No. 11 Kansas travels to Austin to take on No. 17 Texas.

After losing 86-81 to Iowa State last Saturday, the Jayhawks responded with an 85-78 home victory against Oklahoma on Monday. In that game, Kansas (11-6 ATS, 9-6 OVER) blew a 20-point lead before rallying in the second half to get the win.

For the Longhorns (10-6 ATS, 7-3 UNDER), everything begins on the defensive end of the court where they hold teams to 56.3 PPG (14th in nation entering Friday) on 34.4% FG with 7.7 blocks per game (2nd in nation entering Friday). Texas has only lost two home games this season (9-2 SU, 4-5 ATS), but one of those was a 21-point defeat to Big 12 rival Oklahoma on Jan. 5.

Last season, these two teams faced each other twice, with the home team winning by double-digits both times. After the Longhorns rolled to an 81-69 win in Austin, the Jayhawks pummeled them 85-54 in Lawrence three weeks later. In Texas, the Longhorns punished Kansas with its physicality, as it got to the free-throw line 45 times, compared to only 19 attempts for Kansas, and Texas earned its first home win in this series since Feb. 11, 2008.

The Jayhawks are 2-2 (SU and ATS) on the road, including a 25-point loss at Temple on Dec. 22, but are 4-1 (SU and ATS) in Big 12 play. The Longhorns are 9-1 SU (6-3 ATS) with at least three days rest this season, and outscoring opponents by a hefty +16.0 PPG margin during this span.

With the bounce-back win against Oklahoma, the Jayhawks showed they are still going to be very difficult to knock off from the top of the Big 12. Kansas enters the weekend ranked 25th in the nation in rebounding (39.2 RPG), 77th in scoring (72.3 PPG), 83rd in assists (14.2 APG), but a subpar 177th in shooting (43.5% FG). The defense is adequate, allowing 64.9 PPG (150th in nation entering Sunday) on 40.9% FG.

Monday's win against Oklahoma was fueled by the play from the freshmen. SG Kelly Oubre Jr. (8.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 42% threes) and PF Cliff Alexander (8.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 57.3% FG) both played huge roles in the victory. Oubre scored a team-high 19 points and added nine rebounds and two steals, while Alexander contributed a double-double of 13 points and 13 boards (7 offensive). In the loss to Iowa State two days earlier, Alexander did not play in the second half because head coach Bill Self did not like his effort, and he sure responded on Monday.

PF Perry Ellis (12.8 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 39% threes) is starting to play like the veteran on the team, giving the Jayhawks a consistent player in the frontcourt. PG Frank Mason III (12.7 PPG, 4.2 APG, 4.0 RPG) has been great the entire season, reaching double-figures in each of the past 15 games. The point guard matchup will be huge in this game, because when the two teams played in Austin last season, Isaiah Taylor was the best player on the floor.

For Texas to win this game, it must continue to defend hard every possession and control the glass like it has done all season, ranking fourth in the nation in total rebounds (42.8 RPG). The Longhorns offense ranks a pedestrian 123rd in the nation in scoring (69.9 PPG), 146th in assists (13.1 APG) and 163rd in shooting (43.8% FG).

Rick Barnes made the biggest splash late in the recruiting process last year when he signed PF Myles Turner (11.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG and 2.7 BPG) away from Kansas. Turner is one of the more skilled post players in college basketball, as he also shoots 41% threes and 88% free throws. He does a great job of stepping out and shooting, which opens up driving lanes for his teammates.

One of those guys is PG Isaiah Taylor (11.4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.5 APG), who is back and healthy after missing a lot of games this season. In the home game against Kansas last season, he was unstoppable, finishing with a game-high 23 points. Taylor was able to get inside the lane at will, and those opportunities should be open this year because of Turner.

SF Jonathan Holmes (11.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 37% threes) is the guy the team relies on to make the big play down the stretch, as he has hit numerous game winning three-pointers in his career. Holmes also scored 22 points in last season's home win versus the Jayhawks.

WISCONSIN BADGERS (17-2) at MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (12-7)

                Tip-off: Saturday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                Sportsbook.ag Line: Wisconsin -10

No. 6 Wisconsin looks for a big road victory on Saturday against a Michigan team that is without its top scorer, Caris LeVert.

Wisconsin (11-7 ATS, 11-8 UNDER) has got things back on track since losing to Rutgers, and the Badgers will be going up against a team that they split the season series a year ago. Both games went to the road team, as Bo Ryan’s club won by 13 points in Ann Arbor. The Badgers have been off since a 32-point victory against Iowa on Tuesday, and they have been very good with that extended break this season at 6-3-1 ATS with at least three days' rest.

It has been a down season for the Wolverines (6-11 ATS, 11-5 UNDER), but the team has shown some life with a 5-2 start in the Big Ten. While Michigan has not played the best teams in the conference yet, getting some wins has been huge for a squad that was really struggling with confidence. The Wolverines played the same day as Wisconsin, but have not been nearly as good with at least three days off (3-5 ATS). For a team that appears to be gaining some momentum, the layoff could hurt Michigan against a Wisconsin club coming off one of the most dominating performances of the college basketball season.

In the win against Iowa, the most impressive stat for Wisconsin was that they only turned the ball over one time. That turnover was on a shot-clock violation, so Bo Ryan’s squad clearly does an excellent job of not allowing their opponents to get out and run. The Badgers have been extremely efficient on the offensive end of the court, entering Friday's action ranked 14th in shooting (49.0% FG), 48th in scoring (73.8 PPG), 161st in assists (12.9 APG) and also 201st in rebounding (34.4 RPG).

Leading the way for the Badgers is All-American candidate C Frank Kaminsky (16.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 40% threes), who is one of the most talented big men in college basketball. At 7-foot, 234 pounds he does a lot of his damage on the perimeter, but he can also take most players on the block.

Wisconsin does a great job of finding the mismatch in the post, spotting guys like SF Sam Dekker (12.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.2 APG) and PF Nigel Hayes (12.5 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.9 APG) when they are being defended by opposing teams’ smaller players. Dekker has continued to improve his offensive game, and much more aggressive in getting to the rim.

Wisconsin also does a great job of shooting the ball from deep (36% threes), with SG Josh Gasser (7.2 PPG, 2.7 APG, 40% threes) leading the way. On defense, the Badgers are one of the best teams in the country, ranking fifth in points allowed (54.6 PPG). Against a Michigan team that has struggled to score, the Wisconsin defense could have another big performance.

It is has been a struggle for the Wolverines this season, and it has gotten even more difficult with SG Caris LeVert missing the remainder of the season due to an injury. Michigan ranks 201st in the nation in assists (12.4 APG), 241st in scoring (64.9 PPG), 279th in shooting (41.1 %) and 302nd in rebounding (31.8 RPG).

SG Zak Irvin (13.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG and 3.7 APG) had really shown promise as a role player, but with LeVert’s injury, he now has become the focal point of the Michigan offense. He can shoot the ball well from the three-point line (36% threes), but he needs to improve on his ability to finish at the rim in order to make himself even more difficult to guard.

PG Derrick Walton Jr. (10.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.1 APG) has had a solid sophomore campaign, but has not taken it to the next level like he was expected to by the team. He has done a nice job of not turning the ball over (1.7 TOPG), which has allowed the Wolverines to get into their offense.

The rebounding has been the biggest struggle for Michigan, in large part because of its inability to get production from the frontcourt. The school's top three rebounders are guards (LeVert being one of them), with the point guard Walton Jr. leading the team. Freshman PF Ricky Doyle (6.9 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 67 % FG) has some skills similar to former Wolverines PF Mitch McGary, but Doyle is still raw and learning the Michigan system

-- Home teams are 0-7 vs spread in first seven Ivy League games.

                  -- Oregon 82, UCLA 64-- Bruins are 11-9, probably won't make NCAAs.

                  **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

                  13) Eric Compton is tied for the lead at Humana Challenge golf tournament, which may not sound like much, except for one thing:

Eric Compton is working on his third heart; he's had two heart transplants.

                  12) I can watch WCC basketball games on my laptop for free, but the games get blacked out on my DirecTV, even though I have the college basketball package; this makes zero sense to me. At least I can see them, unlike the St Peter's games......

                  11) Just to clarify from Friday night, Klay Thompsin had an alley-oop dunk, a driving layup thru three defenders and two foul shots in his perfect third quarter. All the rest of his 37 points in that quarter came on jump shots, one of the greatest shooting exhibitions ever seen.

                  10) Oklahoma State played the noon game at Kansas State; their coach Trvais Ford got a technical foul 0:53 into the game and things went downhill from there in a 63-53 loss to the Wildcats in the Little Apple.

                  9) West Virginia 86, Texas Tech 85-- Would not want to ref a West Virginia game; they press like hell, they're not the best shooters, so there's always a ton of loose balls, ton of fouls to be called and coach Huggins tries like hell to intimidate the refs. Plus, the West Virginia mascot carries a musket.

This game had a wild ending, with seven points scored in the last ten seconds. Trent Johnson is doing a terrific job rebuilding TCU's program, but he wasn't at all happy with the refs when this game was done.

                  8) Kenpom.com lists their all-conference team for each league; their SEC first team is five Kentucky players and I'm not even sure if they all start.

                  7) Looks like Pistons guard Brandon Jennings tore his achilles tendon Saturday night, tough blow for a Detroit team that has won 12 of its last 16 games.

                  6) I wonder if Big East is happy they put all their basketball games on FOX Sports 1? Not having a presence on ESPN has to hurt their exposure some, right?

                  5) UTEP lost in overtime at Western Kentucky Thursday night; they went 0-17 from the arc, but sent the game to OT when a 3-point shooter was fouled and made two of three foul shots. Miners lost at Marshall last night; rough week for them.

                  4) Dan D'Antoni is the new coach at Marshall by the way, Mike's brother.

                  3) ESPN must make money on the X Games and Winter X Games or they wouldn't have them, but where are the people who are bad at those events? Some of that stuff looks pretty damn dangerous.

                  2) Do the Seahawks have any advantage in the Super Bowl because they play the Cardinals in this stadium every year?

                  1) In my opinion, it would be unfair to the Seahawks to suspend any Patriot for next week's Super Bowl; it would make it a no-lose situation for New England and a tainted win for Seattle. I'm thinking we won't see Bill Belichick in 2015.

Duke favored as Coach K goes for win No. 1,000

Duke will be favored when head coach Mike Krzyzewski goes for his 1,000 career victory Sunday when they visit St. John's.

The Blue Devils, who are are currently 5.5-point road favorites over the Red Storm, are 14-2 straight up when favored this season, but are just 7-9-1 against the spread in those cases.

St. John's is 7-7-1 ATS this season.

Kentucky's stout D making them a great under play

No. 1 ranked Kentucky topped the South Carolina 58-43 Saturday behind another impressive defensive performance that has made the Wildcats a terrific under play.

Kentucky ranks second in the nation in points allowed per game at 50.4 and are first in opponents field goal percentage at a ridiculous 31.7 percent. They have given up less than 50 points in three of their last four games, going under the total in four straight, making them one of the best under bets in the nation at 4-15 over/under.

                          • Duke travels to St. John's

                            January 24, 2015

DUKE BLUE DEVILS (16-2) at ST. JOHN'S RED STORM (13-5)

                            Tip-off: Sunday, 2:00 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Duke -6

Mike Krzyzewski tries to win his 1,000th game as a collegiate coach on Sunday when his No. 5 Duke team visits St. John's.

Krzyzewski picked up wins 998 and 999 in the previous eight days with impressive double-digit victories at Louisville (63-52) last Saturday and versus Pittsburgh (79-65) on Monday. This followed a stunning two-game losing skid where the Blue Devils lost by 12 points at NC State and by 16 points at home to Miami.

The Red Storm opened the season with 11 wins in their first 12 games, but have dropped four of their past six contests SU. They did beat Marquette 60-57 on Wednesday but failed to cover the 6.5-point spread, to fall to 1-5 ATS in the past six games.

These schools have played 14 times since 1999, with Duke holding a commanding 11-3 SU advantage, but the Red Storm are an impressive 10-4 ATS in these games, including four straight ATS wins. These teams last met three seasons ago in Durham where the Blue Devils won 83-76 but didn't come close to covering the 18-point spread.

Duke is 14-1 SU (8-7 ATS) after an SU win this season, but it just 2-6 ATS on 3+ days rest. On the other hand, St. John's is 6-3-1 ATS after an SU win and 6-3 ATS with at least three days' rest this season.

Duke remains one of the top offenses in college basketball, ranking among the top-20 teams (through Thursday) in scoring (81.8 PPG, 10th in NCAA), shooting (50.0% FG, 6th in nation) and Ast/TO ratio (1.41, 18th in NCAA). This club also rebounds very well with a +7.0 RPG margin and makes 7.6 threes per game on a strong 37.4% clip. Their defense is also respectable with 63.7 PPG allowed on 42.1% FG.

The best player on the team -- and maybe the best in the country -- is freshman C Jahlil Okafor (18.6 PPG, 8.9 RPG) who has scored in double-figures in all 18 games. He has also grabbed at least six rebounds in 16-of-18 contests, but is coming off a season-low three boards in 28 minutes versus Pittsburgh on Monday. Although Okafor makes only 59% FT for the season, he has done a much better job at the line this month with a 69% FT clip (34-49). PF Amile Jefferson (8.9 PPG, 7.7 RPG) has been a beast on the boards in his past four games with 9.0 RPG to go along with 11.3 PPG. This duo will have to remain strong inside against the talented shot-blockers for St. John's.

Duke's backcourt has also been great this season, as freshman PG Tyus Jones (10.1 PPG, 5.1 APG), broke out of a slump in a big way with 16.0 PPG and 6.0 APG in his past two games. For the season, Jones carries an impressive 3.0 Ast/TO ratio and shoots 37% from three-point land. SG Quinn Cook (14.2 PPG, 3.4 APG) is also a great long-range shooter (38% FG), but he has been ice-cold in the past two games with 9.0 PPG on 5-of-19 FG and 3-of-15 threes.

St. John's has a quality offense that scores 71.1 PPG on 44.4% FG, but the club's real strength is on defense; especially the interior. The Red Storm average 6.9 blocks per game (5th in NCAA through Thursday) and 8.7 steals per game (T-14th in nation through Thursday) while holding opponents to a mere 38.5% FG (32nd in NCAA through Thursday). But despite having great rim protectors, they are a poor rebounding team with a minus-2.1 RPG margin, and they also struggle mightily from downtown (31.8% threes).

SG D'Angelo Harrison (20.0 PPG, 5.9 RPG) is the team's best long-range shooter (37% threes) and is the school's most accurate foul shooter (82% FT). He has scored at least nine points in all 17 games this season, but his shot has been way off in the past two games where he's a dismal 5-for-28 FG (18%) and 3-of-14 threes (21%).

SG Rysheed Jordan (13.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 2.1 SPG) has scored at least 15 points in three straight games where he has logged a hefty 37.7 MPG, and he will be needed to disrupt Duke's flow on offense.

SF Sir'Dominic Pointer (11.1 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 3.0 APG) is also on a three-game streak of scoring 10+ points, averaging 14.3 PPG and 7.0 RPG during this surge. Pointer's versatility always makes for a difficult matchup for his opponent. C Chris Obekpa (7.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 3.5 BPG) is counted on much more for his defense than offense, and he is averaging only 5.0 PPG on 5-of-14 FG in the past three games.

                            • Sunday's Top Action

                              January 24, 2015

While there might not be any football to bet on this Sunday (unless you are desperate enough to wager on the Pro Bowl), college basketball has you covered with 11 Top 25 teams in the AP’s latest poll in action. Two games of interest pit No. 8 Notre Dame on the road against North Carolina State in the ACC followed by No. 13 Maryland playing host to Northwestern in a Big Ten clash.

The following betting tip sheet breaks down each one of these conference matchups with some key facts, stats and betting trends to help you wager on the games.

No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack (ESPNU, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Notre Dame -2 ½

Notre Dame has just one straight-up loss in its last 15 games and that was to No. 2 Virginia, but it has been tough to bet on lately with a 2-4 record against the spread in its last six contests. The Irish did cover their last time out in an 85-60 rout of Virginia Tech this past Thursday as 10 ½-point road favorites. The total has gone OVER in seven of 10 games with a posted line behind an offense that is averaging 81.9 points per game. They come into this game as the second-best shooting team in the nation with a 52.6 field goal percentage and senior guard Jerian Grant has led the way with 16.8 PPG while shooting 51.8 percent from the field.

The Wolfpack dropped to 3-3 SU in conference play with this past Thursday’s 65-60 loss to Miami. After forcing a PUSH in that game as five-point road underdogs, they are a profitable 5-0-1 ATS during this stretch. NC State is 8-5 ATS at home this season and the total has gone OVER in five of seven home games with posted betting odds. Junior guard Trevor Lacey is the Wolfpack’s leading scorer with 16.7 PPG and he has connected on 43 percent of his shots from three-point range. NC State is averaging 72.1 PPG and on defense they are allowing an average of 64.2 points.

-- NC State won last season’s only meeting 77-70 as an eight-point road underdog. The total in that game went OVER the closing 140-point betting line.

Northwestern Wildcats vs. No. 13 Maryland Terrapins (Big Ten Network, 7:30 p.m. ET)

                              Opening Odds: Maryland -13

Northwestern started play in the Big Ten on a high note with a 51-47 road win against Rutgers as a three-point underdog, but it has been a series of low points ever since with five straight losses. The Wildcats have managed to cover ATS in three of their last four games as underdogs in each and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven outings. The duo of junior guard Tre Demps and freshman guard Bryant McIntosh have led the way with a combined 23.9 PPG, but the Wildcats are ranked 245th in the nation in scoring with an average of 64.7 points while shooting 43.2 percent from the field.

The Terrapins’ inaugural season in the Big Ten is off to a solid 5-2 SU (4-3 ATS) start. However, they are coming off an 89-70 loss to Indiana this past Thursday as 1 ½-point underdogs on the road to fall to 2-3 ATS in their last five games. The total has gone OVER in their last three outings. Maryland is averaging 72.8 PPG and shooting 44.7 percent from the field. Its top two scorers have been freshman guard Melo Trimble (15.8 PPG) and junior guard/forward Jake Layman (14.7 PPG). Layman is shooting 51.7 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three-point range.

                              Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats have covered ATS in their last four road games and they are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a SU loss. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight road games.

-- The Terrapins are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five home games against a team with a SU losing record on the road, but they are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games following a loss ATS. The total has gone OVER in seven of their last eight games played on a Sunday.

-- The last time these two met was in 2012 with Maryland rolling to a 77-57 victory as a five-point road underdog. The total went OVER the 130-point line in that contest.

                              • Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- James Harden has scored 30+ points 21 times this season; no one else in NBA has done it more than thirteen times.

-- UAB shot 70.3% from floor in Saturday's OT win over Old Dominion; not often a team shoots 70%+ for a whole game.

-- Atlanta Hawks have now won 16 games in row and 30 of last 32.

-- Three of five starters for the Knicks Saturday are on 10-day contracts.

-- Duke 77, St John's 68-- Mike Krzyzewski won his 1,000th game; Blue Devils were down nine with 8:20 left.

-- Atlanta Falcons will reportedly name Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn their head coach as soon as the confetti stops falling after the Super Bowl.

                                **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

                                13) Didn't watch Pro Bowl or the NHL All-Star Game; if you pick teams by having guys choose up sides, then its a farce and I'm not watching. There was good basketball on all day/night Sunday, plus the golf, so that was enough entertainment.

                                12) Remember the beginning of the TV show MASH, when helicopters are coming over the mountain as they run the credits? That was filmed at the golf course where they played the Humana Challenge this weekend, in La Quinta.

                                11) Notre Dame 81, NC State 78 OT-- This was an excellent game, with Wolfpack up 18 in first half, but Notre Dame has lot of guys hwo can score and they fought back and won this high-level game.

                                10) Snoop Dawg's son Cordell Broadus is a 4-star football recruit from Las Vegas; ESPN has a reality show about father/son running on Wednesday/Sundays. First two episodes weren't bad. Young Broadus is 6-3, listed as the #27 receiver in this recruiting class by some recruiting service online. Curious to see where he winds up.

Not sure if I mentioned this last week, but the high school coach in this show is now the head coach at UNLV. Tony Sanchez, who has the backing of the two guys who run UFC- their kids go to Bishop Gorman HS, which has amazing facilities for a high school. I'm told their weight room is better than most Division I weight rooms.

                                9) College football's Signing Day is February 4; Michigan has only eight signees, with Jim Harbaugh getting his first two this week, including a four-star quarterback from New Mexico who shunned Texas to play for the Wolverines.

                                8) You figure that with the scholarship limit at 85 and most freshmen red-shirting, that makes 17 the average recruiting class, right? Michigan needs to change a few kids' minds in order to avoid this recruiting class being a hinderance to future success.

                                7) Cal-Davis leads the country, making 43.9% of its 3-pointers; Central Michigan, Iona and Idaho are right behind them.

Nevada is last, making 23.2% of its 3-pointers.

                                6) Ole Miss leads the country, making 80% of its foul shots; Illinois, BYU, Albany (my alma mater) are the next three teams in line.

Savannah State is last, making 56.8% from the charity stripe.

                                5) Charleston is 1-7 in CAA with a new coach hired in September after the old coach was forced out for being verbally abusive. Cougars lost their last three games, all by exactly two points. Strange this is, Rick Barry's youngest son (he has a LOT of sons) is Charleston's best player and only a sophomore. Maybe Rick Barry should coach.

                                4) Marcus Mariota apparently hurt his shoulder in the national title game when an Ohio State lineman landed on him late in the game; now he says he might not throw at the NFL Combine, because the shoulder isn't 100%.

Lot of rumors that the Eagles will trade up for Mariota so he can play for Chip Kelly again, so does throwing at the Combine really matter?

                                3) Virginia 50, Virginia Tech 47- Cavaliers survived a comatose effort against an inferior opponent; their next three games: Duke-North Carolina-Louisville. They'll need to be a lot better in those games than they were Sunday.

                                2) Miami Heat's Hassan Whitehead blocked 12 shots Sunday, making him the first NBA player to block 10+ shots in 25 or less minutes since Manute Bol in 1989.

                                1) Maryland 68, Northwestern 67-- Wrong team won this game; Wildcats played better, even though they're obviously not the better team. Northwestern has now lost six games in a row, the last five all by 5 or less points or in OT- they're close.

Freshman Bryant McIntosh missed a huge foul shot in this game, but he is a keeper; if Chris Collins recruits a few more kids like him, Wildcats will get to the NCAAs for the first time ever in the very near future.
