Top 25 roundup: No. 8 Notre Dame tops No. 4 Duke

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore Steve Vasturia nailed a key 3-pointer from the corner with 22 seconds left to help eighth-ranked Notre Dame beat fourth-ranked Duke 77-73 on Wednesday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.

It was Notre Dame's sixth comeback win from a double-digit deficit this season.

Duke, which beat St. John's 77-68 on Sunday to make coach Mike Krzyzewski the only Division I men's basketball coach with 1,000 victories, fell to 17-3 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. Notre Dame improved to 20-2 overall and 8-1 in the ACC.

Senior guard Jerian Grant led Notre Dame with 23 points, 12 assists and six rebounds. Vasturia, a guard, finished with seven points, but the 3-point dagger was his only field goal of the game in five attempts.

Freshman center Jahlil Okafor led the Blue Devils with 22 points and 17 rebounds.

        No. 6 Arizona 90, Oregon 56

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Wildcats broke the game open with a 17-1 second-half run, and they routed the Ducks for their fifth consecutive victory.

The Wildcats (19-2, 7-1 Pac-12) swept the regular-season series, as they prevailed 80-62 when the teams met in Eugene, Ore., on Jan. 8. The Ducks (14-7, 4-4) saw their two-game winning streak end.

After Oregon used an 8-0 run to trim Arizona's lead to 56-46 with 13:06 to play, Wildcats junior guard Gabe York scored the first nine points of the 17-1 surge to quash the comeback. York knocked down two 3-pointers and added a transition three-point play to push the lead back to 19. He added a jumper late in the run. Thirteen of York's team-high 16 points came in the second half.

        No. 9 Kansas 64, TCU 61

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kansas guard Frank Mason went to the hoop for the big baskets the Jayhawks needed and TCU's last-second prayer went unanswered.

Mason scored 16 points and guard Brannen Greene made five key free throws and blocked a shot in the final minute as Kansas (17-3, 6-1 Big 12) held on at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. TCU reserve guard Charles Hill’s 30-footer at the buzzer hit the back iron and bounced away.

Point guard Kyan Anderson led TCU with 17 points. However, the Horned Frogs (14-6, 1-6 Big 12), who have had free-throw struggles during much of conference play so far, made just 15 of 29 from the line.

        No. 10 Louisville 79, Boston College 72

BOSTON -- Louisville ended a tough day of travel with a tough ACC victory over Boston College.

Guards Chris Jones and Terry Rozier combined for 51 points, 34 in the second half, as the Cardinals (17-3, 5-2 ACC), in their first year in the conference, never trailed. They arrived in Boston about six hours before game time because of Tuesday's blizzard.

Rozier, who also got BC guard and main offensive weapon Olivier Hanlan in foul trouble in the second half, scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and wound up with a career-high 28 points.

Boston College (9-10, 1-6) lost despite a career-high 28 points by guard Aaron Brown.

No. 12 Wichita State 58, Loyola (Chicago) 47

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State survived an ugly grinder against Loyola (Chicago) at Koch Arena.

It took almost 10 minutes in the second half for the Shockers (19-2, 9-0 Missouri Valley Conference) to build a comfortable lead. A 9-0 run, capped by junior guard Ron Baker's 3-pointer, gave the home team a 44-30 lead. Wichita State held Loyola (13-8, 3-6) scoreless for almost six minutes.

Wichita State is 9-0 in the MVC for the second straight season. It extended its modern-day MVC record to 27 regular-season wins and its home win streak, also a record, to 28 games.

Junior guard Fred VanVleet led Wichita State with a career-high 27 points, 16 in the first half. Baker added 16, 14 in the second half. Junior guard Devon Turk led Loyola with nine points.

No. 18 Northern Iowa 59, Southern Illinois 52

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Northern Iowa went from upset alert to cruise control in a six-minute span of the second half on Wednesday night. Scoring on nine straight possessions, the Panthers turned a tight Missouri Valley Conference game into their eighth straight win.

Guard Paul Jesperson came off the bench to score 13 points for Northern Iowa (19-2, 8-1), making 5 of 6 shots from the floor. Forward Seth Tuttle added 13 points and nine rebounds, and reserve forward Nate Buss contributed 11 points for the Panthers.

Reserve center Ibby Djimde scored 10 points for Southern Illinois (9-13, 2-7), which lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Guard Anthony Beane, the team's leading scorer at 16.5 points per game, sank only 2 of 9 shots from the field and had just five points.

        Purdue 83, No. 22 Indiana 67

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue used 63 percent shooting from the field in the first half and tenacious defense throughout to cruise to a Big Ten win over Indiana in Mackey Arena.

Junior guard Rapheal Davis led the Boilermakers with 19 points. Junior guard Yogi Ferrell paced the Hoosiers with 21.

After having lost 13 straight games to ranked opponents, Purdue has wins over back-to-back ranked foes, defeating then No. 25 Iowa 67-63 on Saturday. It also is the second consecutive season that Purdue has beaten Indiana in Mackey Arena.

Purdue (13-8, 5-3 Big Ten) began the second half on an 8-0 blitz, which increased a 38-27 lead to 46-27, essentially knocking Indiana (15-6, 5-3) out of a chance to rally.

        Georgia Tech 70, No. 23 Miami 50

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Last-place Georgia Tech won its first ACC game of the season, upsetting Miami at the BankUnited Center.

Georgia Tech (10-10, 1-7 ACC), which snapped a seven-game losing streak, was led by shooting guard Marcus Georges-Hunt's 24 points.

Miami was betrayed by its offense. The Hurricanes' top two scorers, junior guards Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan, were both shut down. McClellan had six points and Rodriguez was held scoreless, missing all eight of his shots from the field. Center Tonye Jekiri led Miami (14-6, 4-3) with 13 points and nine rebounds. But Miami shot just 34.5 percent from the floor and Georgia Tech shot 56.8 percent.

Georgia Tech entered the night as the only winless team in conference play. It was the first victory this calendar year for Georgia Tech, which had not prevailed since beating Charlotte on Dec. 30.

        No. 24 Oklahoma 81, Texas Tech 36

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma held Texas Tech without a field goal for two long stretches, took control early and never let up in the Big 12 game.

Junior forward Ryan Spangler scored a season-high 20 to lead the Sooners (13-7, 4-4 Big 12). Junior guard Buddy Hield added 15 and junior guard Isaiah Cousins 13.

Texas Tech (11-10, 1-7) was coming off an upset of No. 9 Iowa State on Saturday for its first Big 12 win of the year. But there was little chance of the Red Raiders turning it into a winning streak as Oklahoma continually stretched the lead throughout.

          • Kentucky at Missouri

            January 29, 2015

Kentucky (19-0 straight up, 11-8 against the spread) goes on the road again tonight to put its unbeaten record on the line at Missouri. Sportsbook.ag currently has a proposition bet on whether or not UK will become the first team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers to stay undefeated. For 'yes,' gamblers can earn a +225 payout (risk $100 to win $225), while 'no' backers have to lay a -350 price (risk $350 to win $100).

The offshore website also has UK listed as the -125 'chalk' to win the national title. The next-shortest odds belong to Virginia and Duke (both 8/1 - as of Wednesday afternoon).

As of early this morning, most books had the Wildcats listed as 18.5-point favorites.

John Calipari's team has taken the money in three of its last four games, including Saturday's 58-43 win at South Carolina as a 12-point road 'chalk.' Devin Booker scored a game-high 18 points for the winners, who got four blocked shots out of reserve center Marcus Lee in only 13 minutes of playing time. Aaron Harrison added 13 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Kentucky held South Carolina to an atrocious 12-of-53 shooting from the field (22.6%). The Wildcats lead the nation in field-goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to 31.7 percent shooting from the floor.

UK freshman center Karl-Anthony Towns is second in the SEC in blocked shots, averaging 2.5 rejections per game. The 'Cats lead the country in blocked shots, swatting away 8.1 per game.

Missouri (7-12 SU, 7-10-2 ATS) is in its first rebuilding season under new head coach Kim Anderson, who was once the Big 8 Player of the Year during his playing days with the Tigers. Anderson was also the NABC National Coach of the Year last season when he led Central Missouri to the NCAA Division II title.

Anderson's team is composed mostly of underclassmen, including sophomore power forward Johnathan Williams III, who is averaging 12.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Montaque Gill-Caesar (10.8 PPG, 3.3 RPG) chose Missouri over Kentucky in a recruiting battle. An injury caused Gill-Caesar to miss three games and most of two others.

However, the athletic Ontario native looked back in form during Saturday's 61-60 home loss to Arkansas. He scored 16 points in only 23 minutes of playing time, burying all three of his attempts from long distance and 6-of-9 from the field. Williams finished with 15 points, 10 boards and two blocked shots against the Razorbacks, who only escaped Columbia with a victory after Missouri's Wes Clark missed a pair of free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining.

Since winning its SEC opener over LSU at home in overtime, Missouri has lost five in a row but it did manage to cover the number as a 5.5-point home underdog vs. Arkansas. The Tigers have won six of their 10 home games this year, going 4-5-1 ATS.

This will be Mizzou's richest home underdog situation of the season -- and in many years, for that matter. The Tigers have been home underdogs three times, going 2-1 ATS with the one outright triumph over LSU. Regardless of the venue, they own a 4-2-1 spread record in their last seven games as underdogs.

Missouri is mired in a 5-9-2 ATS slump in its last 16 games. The Tigers have had some gut-wrenching defeats, including a three-point loss to Illinois on a last-second shot and a 74-72 overtime setback to Oklahoma State on a neutral court.

When these schools squared off at Rupp Arena in Lexington on Jan. 13, Kentucky cruised to an emphatic 86-37 win as a 24-point home 'chalk.' Aaron Harrison scored a team-high 16 points, while Anthony-Towns finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

The 'under' is 15-4 overall for the 'Cats, 3-1 in their four road assignments. They have seen the 'under' cash in four consecutive games.

The 'under' has been a winner in four straight Missouri games. The Tigers have seen the 'under' go 10-6 overall, 6-2 in their home games.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

            **B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Seton Hall has basically spent the entire season among the elite money-making teams in college basketball. After four mediocre seasons at the helm, Kevin Willard delivered his best recruiting class going into the crucial 2014-2015 campaign (crucial...as in if you plan to stick around Jersey much longer). The early returns were outrageously lucrative with The Hall covering the number in its first nine games and at a 15-2 ATS clip through 17 outings. However, the Pirates had lost three in a row both SU and ATS going into Wednesday's Big East clash at Marquette. As a 3.5-point road underdog, Seton Hall captured an 80-70 win to hook up its gambling supporters -- yet again -- and help their resume with a much-needed victory.

-- I LOVE this Notre Dame squad. Jerian Grant is the nation's best player. And, oh yeah, the Irish won and covered against Duke in a hotly-contested affair last night in South Bend.

-- I saw Butler at 1,000/1 odds to win the national title at Sportsbook.ag early Wednesday afternoon. I think it's worth consideration for a small amount. As we all know, this program has been to a pair of national-title games. When talking about this sort of return (1,000/1 odds), all you need the Bulldogs to do is get to the Sweet 16 and then you have all sorts of hedge options to ensure a substantial profit.

-- On my website Wednesday as I posted the updated futures, I noted that Notre Dame was worth consideration (at 75/1 odds via Sportsbook.ag). Um, yes, I'm still thinking that.

-- Michigan's Derrick Walton missed Tuesday's home win over Nebraska with a sprained toe. Walton, who averages 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. The sophomore point guard is 'questionable' for Sunday's game against Michigan State Despite losing Caris LeVert to a season-ending injury, who led the Wolverines in every statistical category of any merit, John Beilein's squad is in third place in the Big Ten with a 6-3 mark in league play.

-- Iowa's leading scorer and rebounder Aaron White (15.0 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 52.4 FG% and 1.5 SPG) is 'questionable' for Saturday's home game vs. Wisconsin due to a shoulder injury.

-- After beating South Carolina 64-58 as a 4.5-point home favorite last night in Baton Rouge, LSU has won five of its last six games, going 4-2-1 ATS. Jordan Mickey and Jarrell Martin had six blocked shots apiece against the Gamecocks.

MARYLAND TERRAPINS (18-3) at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (16-5)

              Sportsbook.ag Line: Ohio State -7, Total: 137.5

No. 16 Maryland looks for a big road victory in the Big 10 as the Terrapins travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State on Thursday night.

Maryland (7-10 ATS, 8-7 OVER) has been one of the biggest surprises of the college basketball season, as the Terrapins have been very good in their first year in the Big 10. Two of the three losses for Maryland are against ranked teams (Virginia and Indiana), with only a loss to Illinois looking bad on the team’s tournament resume. The Terrapins made a statement in their first Big 10 game, as they went to East Lansing and picked up a 68-66 road victory in double overtime. The team did not play its best in a 68-67 victory over Northwestern, but Maryland has been very good bouncing back from a tough game (8-1 SU after ATS loss) this year.

Ohio State (9-10-1 ATS, 10-8-3 OVER) has been terrific at home this year, going 14-1 SU and 8-6 ATS. The lone loss was to Iowa, a team that has given the Buckeyes fits the past two years. In their last game, the Buckeyes looked dominant in a 19-point win against Indiana. If Ohio State is able to get the win, it would be the first time since Feb. 2014 that the team won consecutive games against top 25 teams.

The Terrapins had a lot of players transfer from their team, but the balanced offensive attack has helped the team rank 71st in scoring (72.5 PPG), 88th in rebounding (36.6 RPG), 118th in shooting (44.5% from the field) and 260th in assists (11.5 APG). There were some question marks on how good this Maryland team would be, but they have quickly silenced their doubters.

One player that Maryland coach Mark Turgeon knew he would have back is SF Dez Wells (13.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 3.2 APG), who brings toughness to the Maryland team. Wells, a Xavier transfer, made the game-winning shot against Northwestern on Sunday, tipping in the ball with 1.3 seconds remaining. On most nights, he guards the opposing team’s best player, and also shoots 50% from the 3-point line.

While he was a known commodity, freshman PG Melo Trimble (16.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG and 2.9 APG) has been better than advertised. He is an extremely confident player, and he has the ability to score from anywhere on the court (40% threes). At 6-foot-2, he has great size for the point guard position, and he is looking to attack his defender at any time.

F Jake Layman (14.3 PPG, 6.9 RPG and 51% from the field) is a versatile player who does a nice job of finding the mismatch. If teams are too worried about Trimble driving, Layman is fully capable of hitting the 3-point shot (40% threes). As a team, the Terrapins rank 48th in 3-point shooting (37.6%), making them very difficult to guard. The Terrapins also allow just 63 PPG, which ranks 97th in the country.

Thad Matta has one of the best offensive teams that he has ever had at Ohio State, as the Buckeyes rank high in many offensive categories. The Buckeyes rank 3rd in shooting (51% from the field), 13th in assists (16.8 APG), 16th in scoring (80 PPG) and 155th in rebounding (35.2 RPG).

SG D’Angelo Russell (19.4 PPG, 5.2 APG and 44% threes) has been incredible at the start of his freshman year, and him and Trimble could be in a competition for Big 10 player of the year. He was known as a scorer coming into college, but it has also been his passing that has made him a very difficult matchup for opposing defenses.

PG Shannon Scott (8.1 PPG, 6.7 APG and 2.0 SPG) is a guy who does a nice job of getting the Buckeyes into their offense and calming the team down when things get tough. As good as Maryland has been at hitting the 3-point shot, the Buckeyes have been even better (38.6% threes) which should mean this game will be a high-scoring shootout.

SG Marc Loving (11.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG and 50% threes) is one of the best shooters in the country, and he plays extremely well with Russell and Scott dominating the ball. He is another player that thrives in transition, so Ohio State will certainly be looking to create a lot of turnovers.

KENTUCKY WILDCATS (19-0) at MISSOURI TIGERS (7-12)

              Sportsbook.ag Line:: Kentucky -18, Total: 121

No. 1 Kentucky looks to improve to 20-0 on Thursday with a road win versus heavy underdog Missouri.

Kentucky was a 12-point favorite at South Carolina on Saturday and won 58-43 for its 19th straight victory. The Wildcats have now held their past four opponents to under 60 points (46.3 PPG) and they’ve covered in three of those contests. Meanwhile, the Tigers have now dropped five straight games after a 61-60 loss at home against Arkansas on Saturday. They covered the 6.5-point spread in that contest for their only ATS win in their past five games (1-3-1 ATS).

Kentucky played host when these two teams met on Jan. 13 and the Wildcats won that game 86-37 as 24-point favorites. These teams have met five times since 1997 with Kentucky winning every time and covering the four games that had lines. In last season's meeting in Columbia, the Wildcats won 84-79.

While being undefeated SU is impressive on its own, Kentucky is 3-1 ATS on the road this season, as it was favored in all four of those contests. Fifteen of its 19 games this season have finished Under the total. Missouri’s games have been on the low-scoring side as well, as it has now gone Under the total in four straight contests, but the school is 1-11 SU (4-7-1 ATS) in the underdog role this season.

Kentucky averages a strong 74.6 PPG on 45.7% FG (35.7% threes), but that is not where this team wins games. The Wildcats have been dominant defensively this season, allowing only 50.4 PPG (2nd in NCAA) thanks to a nation's-best 8.2 BPG leading to opponents making an NCAA-low 31.7% FG and 27.1% threes (8th in nation through Monday).

C Willie Cauley-Stein (9.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.8 BPG) and PF Karl-Anthony Towns (8.1 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 2.5 BPG) are the tandem that defends the rim for Kentucky. Cauley-Stein is one of the best athletes in college basketball and he provides this team with tons of energy on both ends of the floor. The freshman Towns is one of the prized NBA prospects in college basketball at the moment. He is an incredible shot blocker, but he has not been getting many touches offensively. Towns has now failed to reach double-digits in points in four of the past five games and the Wildcats will need to do a better job of getting him the ball when he has positioning. He had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the win over Missouri on Jan. 13.

SG Aaron Harrison (11.6 PPG) led all scorers with 16 points in that game. Harrison has taken a huge step back this season and a lot of that has to do with his struggling outsider jumper (32% threes). His team will need him to start scoring more efficiently, so it’s going to be important that he starts to take better pride in his shot selection.

PG Tyler Ulis (5.6 PPG, 3.7 APG) had six points and six assists in the victory over South Carolina on Saturday. He is a major spark off the bench for this team and he should be seeing an increase in minutes going forward.

The Tigers have been pretty miserable as of late, losing five straight games, and a matchup with Kentucky isn’t going to necessarily excite the team. Missouri struggles offensively with just 63.2 PPG on 41.4% FG and 35.3% threes, which is an issue considering it will be facing one of the best defensive teams in basketball. Missouri's defense is also subpar, allowing 68.1 PPG on 41.7% FG and 33.8% threes. When these teams met on Jan. 13, the Tigers were held to just 16-of-59 FG (27.1%) and an embarrassing 1-of-18 from three-point range.

PF Johnathan Williams III (12.6 PPG, 7.1 RPG) is the Tigers’ leading scorer, but he was held to just three points on a dreadful 1-of-13 FG in the game against Kentucky. But Williams is coming off a 15-point, 10-rebound performance against Arkansas on Saturday, and Missouri will need him to play with that type of confidence in this one.

SG Montaque Gill-Caesar (10.8 PPG, 3.3 RPG) didn’t pay against Kentucky in their last meeting and could add some firepower for this team. He had 16 points against Arkansas and can be a lethal shooter once he gets himself going. He was 3-for-3 from downtown against the Razorbacks, and has shot it well from three all season with a 38% clip.

The last time these teams played, the Tigers had to turn to PF Keanau Post (3.6 PPG, 3.4 RPG) in order to try to match the size of Kentucky to an extent. Post responded well with 10 points and six rebounds, and there’s a good chance Missouri gives him some extended minutes in order to bang with Cauley-Stein and Towns.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

                13) NBA has a problem; their best players take too many games off. A new phrase is "recovery days" as in, they don't want their best guys playing back-to-back nights. When fans pay major money to see stars play, they're not going to be happy when the stars don't play. "Sprained wrist" is a poor excuse for Lebron James to sit out.

                12) Watching Alabama play Tuesday night, they did a feature on the strength coach at Alabama, and how coach Anthony Grant approved of his players' "commitment to the weight room". How about a commitment to improving your skills with the ball?

Crimson Tide is turning ball over 22.4% of the time while playing the slowest tempo in the SEC. Four of their last five games were decided by two points. Little less time on the bench press, little more time in the gym. I'm just sayin'......

                11) Wednesday will be a big day on ESPNU; National Signing Day for college football, with 11 hours (11 hours!!!) of coverage on ESPNU. National titles 3-5 years from now will in part be determined on Wednesday. Recruiting is an interesting subject.

                10) Pete Carril's Princeton teams practiced different types of layups for eight minutes of every practice; you watch high Division I ball and guys struggle to finish plays around the rim. Its called skill development; you don't need a strength coach or a $1M weight room, but it helps you win a lot of games.

                9) NBA teams who are playing at home for the second night in a row are only 3-10 against the spread this season.

                8) CBS hired Frank Nobilo as its newest golf analyst, replacing Peter Oosterhuis, who retired. Nobilo has been working for the Golf Channel, is a good hire.

                7) NFL head coaches in their second Super Bowl are 14-8.

                6) North Carolina-Wake Forest will play non-conference football games in 2019 and 2021; both teams are in ACC, but in different divisions- they weren't scheduled to play each other in those years. Makes sense financially, if not artistically.

                5) 49ers hired an offensive coordinator from within? How is Kaepernick supposed to be a better passer without better coaching?

                4) Braves signed 25-year old Cuban OF Dian Toscano to a 4-year deal, on same day the White Sox designated Cuban OF Dayan Viciedo for assignment. Viciedo started a lot for the Pale Hose last season; curious to see where he winds up.

                3) DePaul Blue Demons went 0-3 at a Christmas tournament in Hawai'i and looked dead; now they're 5-3 in the Big East and are showing life. Or maybe the Big East just isn't very good, thats possible too. .

                2) Patriots have only one offensive player (Nate Solder) who was a first round draft pick; they've built their success via defense and shrewd trades.

                1) Underrated storyline of this Super Bowl: when New England hired Belichick, they fired a coach who was 28-23 in Foxboro and who made the playoffs twice in three years and had an 8-8 season the third year. A coach named Pete Carroll.

-- Sacramento State 75, Montana State 59-- Hornets are 8-1 in Big Sky, but thir gym isn't big enough to host Big Sky tournament, should they get top seed.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.........

                  13) Duke basically cut junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon Thursday, for unspecified reasons, but he is in good academic standing and he doesn't have a police rap sheet, so only thing left is that he wasn't being a good soldier about being a sub after he had started 50 games for the Blue Devils the last two seasons.

This from espn.com: "Last season the coaching staff talked to Sulaimon about his body language when things didn't go his way. He had specifically been called out for pouting and not celebrating his teammates while he was on the bench."

                  12) Suliamon is the first player ever banished by Duke in the Coach K era; lets face it, in this era, if you're a junior at Duke or Kentucky and not in the NBA, then you're a disappointment. Coaches fail to develop a kid, so they just purge him. Seems fair.

                  11) Jusr for the record, Suliamon was 4-5 from the arc, had 13 points in a win at Pitt 11 days ago, then he played 16 minutes at St John's, 12 at Notre Dame, fewest he has played this season. He has one year of college left, and is from Houston. Curious to see where he winds up.

                  10) One last Duke thing: If Jahlil Okafor is so great, why was he on the bench for most of the last 2:00 at Notre Dame? He is a defensive liability, thats why. Wonder if anyone would take the Sabonis kid first if he comes out for the draft in June? His dad was a great player over in Russia. Its a fair question.

                  9) Eventually, I think the NFL will go to an 18-game regular season with the Super Bowl being played the Sunday of Presidents' Day weekend.

                  8) Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham stays with the Cardinals, rather than jumping to the same job with the NFL's Raiders. Unusual decision.

                  7) So I'm watching Law and Order in the middle of the night this week and who shows up as a defense lawyer but Shirley Jones, who was the mom in The Partridge Family when I was a kid. She was a MILF before MILFs were a thing; Ms Jones is 80 and still married to Marty Ingalls, who was a funny guy but a terrible actor- he popularized the practice of famous actors doing voiceovers on commercials. .

                  6) How long will Eldrick Woods monopolize golf telecasts? How many times does he have miss the fairway or miss the cut before he is no longer a huge story? He was in 4th-to-last place at one point Thursday, yet they showed all of his shots-- why?

                  5) Ever hear of Branden Grace, Shane Lowry or Marc Leishman? Those are the three golfers directly ahead of Woods in the World Golf Rankings.

                  4) Must be a lot of money in collecting garbage, since Waste Management is the sponsor of this week's PGA Tour event in Phoenix.

                  3) Russell Wilson's grandfather was once president at Norfolk State University.

                  2) Eastern Washington QB Vernon Adams is considering playing his last year of college ball at Oregon. Adams threw for 4,994 yards this past season for the I-AA Eagles, who lost to Washington 59-52, with Adams passing for 475 yards.

                  1) College hoop referee Brian O'Connell worked his 58th game of year last night in Cincinnati; he did 92 games last year- this will be 10th year in a row he's worked 70+ D-I games. Not a bad second job, huh?

Top 25 roundup: Kentucky pulls away from Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Oft the bearers of the guillotine this season, top-ranked Kentucky instead relied on a slow bleed to beat Missouri 69-53 Thursday.

The Wildcats (20-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) extended their perfect start, while the Tigers (7-13, 1-6) absorbed their sixth SEC defeat.

Sophomore guard Andrew Harrison led Kentucky with 15 points. He attempted four field goals -- making all of them -- and converted on nine of his 11 free-throw attempts. After leading 34-25 at halftime, Kentucky made seven of 19 field-goal attempts in the second half but pushed the lead to as many as 20 points thanks to a 20-of-27 performance at the free-throw line.

Guard Wes Clark led Missouri with 19 points. He added four assists, four rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes.

                            Gonzaga 64, Portland 46

Forward Donatas Sabonis and center Przemek Karnowski posted double-doubles, and the third-ranked Bulldogs pulled away for a West Coast Conference win over the Pilots in Spokane, Wash.

Sabonis led Gonzaga (21-1, 10-0 WCC) with 13 points, while Karnowski scored 10 points. They each pulled down 11 boards. Bulldogs guard Kevin Pangos added 10 points.

Guards Bryce Pressley and Bobby Sharp topped Portland (12-10, 3-7) with nine points apiece. The Pilots trailed just 31-25 at halftime before the Bulldogs opened the margin.

                            UCLA 69, Utah 59

LOS ANGELES -- Guard Norman Powell scored a game-high 23 points, and guard Isaac Hamilton added eight consecutive points during a key stretch of the second half as the Bruins defeated the 11th-ranked Utes.

Powell made nine of 16 shot attempts, the great majority of those coming on drives to the basket out of the half-court offense. Guard Bryce Alford added 14 points and seven assists for UCLA (12-9, 4-4 Pac-12), and Hamilton finished with 11 points.

Utah (16-4, 6-2) rarely attacked the UCLA interior defense and never seemed to work up much of a sweat throughout the game. Utes guard Delon Wright scored 15 points, and guard Brandon Taylor added 14 points and five assists.

                            Ohio State 80, Maryland 56

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman guard D'Angelo Russell compiled 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to help the Buckeyes defeat the 16th-ranked Terrapins.

Ohio State (17-5, 6-3 Big Ten) was led by sophomore guard Marc Loving's 19 points off the bench. Loving hit all five of his attempts from 3-point range. Freshman forward Jae'Sean Tate added 16 points.

Guard Dez Wells had 12 points and guard Jake Layman 10 for Maryland (18-4, 6-3).

                              • Duke at Virginia

                                January 30, 2015

Virginia (19-0 straight up, 12-5 against the spread) will put its unbeaten record on the line Saturday night when it takes on Duke in Charlottesville. The Westgate SuperBook opened Virginia as a six-point home favorite.

Tony Bennett's team is coming off one of its toughest games of the season. UVA went into Blacksburg and got all it wanted and then some from Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to capture a 50-47 victory. However, they never threatened to cover the spread as 16.5-point road 'chalk.'

Using its smothering defense, Virginia allowed only two points during a decisive 17-2 run to go back in front of the Hokies during a 9 1/2-minute stretch. Justin Anderson led the way with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Anthony Gill added eight points and seven boards despite playing only 17 minutes due to foul trouble.

Duke (17-3 SU, 10-9-1 ATS) is 4-3 in ACC action, its worst start in conference play since 1995-1996. Making matters worse, Mike Krzyzewski dismissed sixth man Rasheed Sulaimon from the program Thursday afternoon. Sulaimon, who hit the game-tying buzzer beater from way downtown to force overtime at Syracuse last season, was averaging 7.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He had been relegated to coming off the bench after starting 50 games in his first two seasons.

Sulaimon became the first player to be kicked out of the Duke program in Coach K's 35-year tenure. ESPN's Jeff Goodman quoted a source close to the Duke program as saying, "It was an accumulation of a whole lot of residue. It had built up over time. His talent didn't outweigh his issues."

Sulaimon played just 12 minutes in Wednesday's 77-73 loss at Notre Dame. Duke, which closed as a 1.5-point road favorite to the Fighting Irish, led 39-36 at intermission. However, it had no answers for Jerian Grant, who led the winners with 23 points, 12 assists, six rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

In the losing effort, Jahlil Okafor had 22 points, 17 rebounds and three assists. Quinn Cook and Tyus Jones finished with 15 and 14 points respectively.

Virginia has been a single-digit favorite three times this year, posting a 3-0 spread record. The Cavs are 5-3 ATS at home.

Duke has been an underdog twice, winning outright both times at Louisville and at Wisconsin.

Duke is seventh in the RPI Rankings, going 6-2 against the Top 50 and 9-3 versus the Top 100. All six of the Blue Devils' wins over Top-50 foes came on the road or on a neutral court. They have won outright at Wisconsin (80-70), at Louisville (63-52) and at St. John's (77-68), in addition to neutral-court triumphs by double-digit margins over Michigan St., Stanford and Temple.

-- Virginia leads the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 49.2 PPG. The Cavs rank second in the nation in field-goal defense, forcing foes to shoot at an abysmal 34.1 percent clip. They are first in the nation in defensive rebounds and third in rebounding margin.

-- Seton Hall had a 10-2 record (9-1 ATS) when freshman sensation Isaiah Whitehead suffered a stress fracture in his foot on Dec. 21. The McDonald's All-American was the Pirates' second-leading scorer, averaging 11.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. After being cleared by team doctors on Thursday, Whitehead is poised to return in Saturday's home game against Xavier. Kevin Willard's squad went 3-0 both SU and ATS in its first three games without Whitehead, but it had gone 1-4 both SU and ATS in its five previous games before winning (and covering) Wednesday at Marquette. The Hall is 7-2 ATS at home and the 'under' has gone 6-2 in its eight home outings that had a total.

-- As for Xavier, it is playing a second straight road game after smashing Georgetown in an easy wire-to-wire victory Tuesday night. This Big East clash will go down at noon Eastern on Fox Sports 1.

-- Iowa's star and leading scorer Aaron White (15.1 PPG) is 'questionable' for Saturday's home game vs. Wisconsin.

-- Alabama's second-leading scorer Ricky Tarrant (13.1) is 'out' for Saturday's game at Kentucky due to a lower-leg injury. The Wildcats, who are facing a quick turnaround after winning late Thursday night at Missouri, beat 'Bama by a 70-48 count in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 17.

-- BYU's Kyle Collinsworth is 'questionable' for Saturday night's home game vs. Santa Clara. Collinsworth, who is dealing with a hip injury, averages 12.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.

-- Florida has seen the 'over' hit in eight consecutive games before Tuesday's 52-50 win at Alabama. Nevertheless, the 'over' is 8-1 in the last nine for the Gators, who host Arkansas on Saturday. UF doesn't have any wins over RPI Top-50 foes so a victory in this spot is mandatory. Billy Donovan's team has beaten the Razorbacks in seven of the last eight head-to-head meetings.

-- Arkansas-Little Rock will be without forward James White for the rest of the season due to a leg injury. White was averaging 11.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game for the Trojans.
