        • LEADING OFF: A's winning streak on line in suspended game
          September 5, 2019
          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

          SO, WHERE WERE WE?

Before their regularly scheduled matchup in Oakland, the Tigers and Athletics will resume a game that was suspended May 19 at Detroit with the A's leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Back then, the A's were in the middle of putting together their first 10-game winning streak since 2006. But that could get wiped away if Oakland can't close out the May 19 game against Detroit. If the A's hang on, the winning streak will go to 11 games. If the Tigers rally to win, Oakland's streak from that stretch will only be considered a seven-gamer. Center fielder Ramon Laureano is expected to come off the injured list for the A's and play in the second game.

          OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Minnesota has a chance to widen its 6+-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland and perhaps all but salt away the division title when the Indians come to town for a three-game series. Michael Pineda (11-5, 4.11 ERA) pitches the opener for the Twins, back home from an 8-2 road trip. Adam Plutko (6-4, 4.53) goes for Cleveland.

          CLOSING IN

Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers have a magic number of four to clinch their seventh consecutive NL West title. They could do it at home over the weekend against rival San Francisco - depending on how Arizona fares in Cincinnati. Kershaw (13-4, 2.96 ERA) starts the first game opposite Jeff Samardzija (9-11, 3.61), who is 0-3 with a 4.21 ERA in five appearances at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles lefty Rich Hill will face hitters as he works his way back from a forearm strain.

          WINDY CITY WORRIES

Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel was placed on the 10-day injured list with elbow inflammation Thursday, retroactive to Monday, ahead of a big series against Milwaukee. Chicago also scratched All-Star shortstop Javier Baez with lingering soreness in his left thumb. Kimbrel hasn't pitched since allowing a three-run homer to Brewers slugger Christian Yelich in a 4-0 loss Sunday.

''He felt a little something pop up in that outing so just to be on the cautious side, we had an MRI done,'' Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. ''It showed everything is in place structurally. He just has a little inflammation.

''His elbow was pristine just like when we signed him, which is good news, but unfortunately we have to give him a few days without throwing to let it calm down,'' Epstein said.

Kimbrel is 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA and 13 saves in 21 games for Chicago.

Baez hasn't played since jamming his thumb on a slide Sunday. X-rays were negative.

          AILING ASTROS

Houston right-hander Aaron Sanchez will have surgery on his pitching shoulder and miss the remainder of the season. Sanchez hasn't appeared in a game since Aug. 20.

All-Star outfielder George Springer was diagnosed with a mild concussion and will sit out a few games. He is expected to return early next week. Springer was carted off the field Tuesday after his head hit the wall when he made a catch against Milwaukee.

          MANAGER MISSING

White Sox skipper Rick Renteria is scheduled for surgery on his right rotator cuff in Chicago and will miss a weekend series against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Renteria plans to return to the dugout early next week. Bench coach Joe McEwing will run the team in Renteria's absence.

''I do intend to play again this year,'' the 57-year-old Renteria joked.

Renteria played parts of five seasons in the majors from 1986-88 and again from 1993-94. He was an infielder for the Pirates, Mariners and Marlins.

All-Star right-hander Lucas Giolito (14-8, 3.30 ERA) faces Mike Trout and the struggling Angels in the opener.

                          September 6, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer and seven pitchers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.

Xander Bogaerts added a two-run double and Moreland two singles for the Red Sox, who won for the 13th time in 19 games. The defending World Series champions remained 6 1/2 games out of the AL's second wild-card spot with 21 games to play.

Brett Gardner homered for AL East-leading New York, which lost for just the third time in 11 games. The Yankees lead atop the East dropped to 8 1/2 games over Tampa Bay, a 5-0 winner at home against Toronto.

New York starter Domingo German (17-4) gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits with four walks and five strikeouts in his bid to become the majors' first 18-game winner.

Marcus Walden (9-2), Boston's third pitcher, threw a scoreless inning for the victory.

                          BRAVES 4, NATIONALS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Dallas Keuchel pitched six scoreless innings, Ozzie Albies and Josh Donaldson homered, and streaking Atlanta picked up another division win over Washington.

The NL East-leading Braves have won eight in a row, 19 of 23 overall and 12 consecutive at home, dropping Washington nine games back. It was Atlanta's fourth straight victory and eighth in 11 tries over the Nationals.

Keuchel (7-5) allowed six hits and two walks and struck out three to win his fourth straight start.

Nationals starter Patrick Corbin (11-7) walked a season-high six. He gave up three hits and two runs - one earned - with nine strikeouts.

Shane Greene earned his first save in three tries with Atlanta and 23rd overall after facing the minimum with two strikeouts in the ninth.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Roberto Perez hit a two-out RBI single for Cleveland against Minnesota rookie Brusdar Graterol to ignite a four-run 11th inning, as the Indians broke open a critical game against the AL-Central leading Twins, trimming the division lead to 5 + games.

Francisco Lindor drove in another run with an infield single off Graterol. Then Oscar Mercado, who tied the game in the eighth by scoring on a one-out sacrifice fly by Yasiel Puig after hitting a leadoff triple off Sergio Romo, tacked on a two-run single against Trevor Hildenberger, the seventh reliever for the Twins after a stellar start by Michael Pineda.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) struck out three of four batters he faced for the victory, and Nick Goody fanned two of three in a perfect 11th to finish it.

The Twins had their ''magic number'' for clinching the Central stay at 14, meaning any combination of their wins and losses by the Indians reaching that total.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pete Alonso drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to cap chaotic ninth inning and lift New York over Philadelphia.

However, the Mets bailed out Diaz when Mike Morin (1-2) retired the first two batters he faced before Juan Lagares singled to left-center. Lagares went to third when J.D. Davis, pinch-hitting for Diaz, got ahead 3-0 before singling to left on a full-count pitch.

Nick Vincent then plunked Jeff McNeil with an 0-2 pitch to load the bases. Alonso walked on a full count and then had his uniform torn off by teammates as he reached first base.

“……Who cares? I’ll tell you. Me. I’m not your best friend. I’m your only friend. I don’t make anything? I’m making you money. And lest we forget, that’s the only reason any of you became stockholders in the first place. You want to make money! You don’t care if they manufacture wire and cable, fried chicken, or grow tangerines!

You want to make money! I’m the only friend you’ve got. I’m making you money. Take the money. Invest it somewhere else. Maybe, maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be used productively. And if it is, you’ll create new jobs and provide a service for the economy and, God forbid, even make a few bucks for yourselves.

And if anybody asks, tell ’em ya gave at the plant. And by the way, it pleases me that I am called “Larry the Liquidator.” You know why, fellow stockholders? Because at my funeral, you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a few bucks in your pocket. Now that’s a funeral worth having!”

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

                              13) Good Lord I’m tired of hearing about Antonio Brown; Oakland Raiders gave up 3rd and 5th round draft picks for Brown, who turned into a huge pain in the neck. The latest drama between Brown and GM Mike Mayock happened after HBO’s Hard Knocks turned their cameras off for the summer. Too bad.

Brown has $30.125M of guaranteed money in his contract, so he “apologized” Friday because otherwise they were going to cut him, and he was going to lose the $30M. Go figure.

                              12) Line on Monday’s Denver-Oakland game moved from pick ‘em to Broncos -2 as soon as news of Brown’s Thursday hijinks became public. Total also dropped a point; we’ll see if the spread moves back to where it was, now that Brown is back in Monday’s lineup.

                              11) Week 1 of the NFL season should be called National Overreaction Week.

Everyone that wins is going to the Super Bowl; the losers are all going to get fired or replaced by their backup.

Green Bay’s 10-3 win in Chicago Thursday was a dull, defensive struggle, and now the teams not playing their starters in preseason are getting the blame. All of which raises the question, is it worth it to risk a starter getting hurt in a meaningless game to be sharper in Week 1?

                              10) Jacob deGrom has a 2.18 ERA in his last 60 starts; Mets are 24-36 in those games.

                              9) Seven American League games Friday night; only one of 14 starting pitchers got a decision; lot of close ballgames, plus a few teams were using openers.

                              8) Phillies’ catcher JT Realmuto has started 118 games behind plate this year, 14 more than anyone else in the major leagues.

                              7) Baseball stuff:
                              — Astros’ P Aaron Sanchez (shoulder) is done for the year.
                              — Cubs put P Craig Kimbrel (elbow) on IL.

                              6) When the A’s/Tigers resumed a suspended game from May 19 Friday, Oakland was missing three of the nine players in their lineup when the game was stopped back then. Detroit was missing four of nine.

A’s closer Liam Hendriks wasn’t the closer back in May; he was in the game when it was stopped in the 7th inning back then, so he was on the mound when the game resumed Friday.

                              5) NHL’s San Jose Sharks hired former LA Dodgers’ general manager Ned Colletti as a scout; he once covered the Philadelphia Flyers as a beat writer, but has never worked in a hockey front office, so this is a very unusual move.

                              4) Glad to see Vlade Divac getting inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame this week; he was one of my favorite players to watch, a big guy who was a terrific passer. Divac was a big part of the 2002 Sacramento Kings, who lost the Western Conference final to the Lakers in seven games, one of the toughest losses I can remember in the NBA playoffs.

                              3) Thursday night’s Green Bay-Chicago game averaged a 12.8 rating and 22.0M viewers, up 13% and 16% vs last year’s Falcons/Eagles Week 1 Thursday game. It was the highest-rated and most-watched Week 1 Thursday game since 2016.

                              2) Wake Forest 41, Rice 21— If Wake Forest gets to a bowl game this year, it’ll be the 4th year in a row for the Deacons; Wake Forest has never played in four consecutive bowls.

                              1) Altering an official government weather forecast is actually illegal. Who knew?

                              • LEADING OFF: Verlander returns to mound after no-hitter
                                September 6, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                                BACK IN ACTION

Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander takes the mound for the first time since throwing his third career no-hitter Sunday at Toronto. Verlander struck out 14 and walked one in the 2-0 victory over the Blue Jays. He is 7-1 with a 1.76 ERA in his last 10 starts, strengthening his case for a second AL Cy Young Award. He faces visiting Seattle on Saturday night. Yusei Kikuchi pitches for the last-place Mariners.

                                WAITING GAME

Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday on his jammed left thumb. The All-Star slugger got hurt during Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Brewers. He was in the starting lineup for Friday night's game at Milwaukee, but was scratched after he continued to feel discomfort. Baez is batting .281 with 29 homers and 85 RBIs. With Baez out, Addison Russell has been playing shortstop for Chicago.

                                WORTH WATCHING

Cleveland continues its weekend series at Minnesota, and Washington visits Atlanta in another big matchup in the NL playoff race.

The Indians are fighting for positioning in the wild card standings and trying to run down the AL Central-leading Twins in the final weeks of the season. Rookie right-hander Aaron Civale pitches for Cleveland, and All-Star righty Jake Odorizzi gets the ball for Minnesota. Odorizzi is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in three starts against the Indians this year.

The Nationals are on top of the NL wild card standings, but they are looking up at the Braves in the AL East. Washington right-hander Austin Voth faces veteran right-hander Julio Teheran, who is 2-0 with a tidy 0.95 ERA in his last three outings.

                                COMING BACK

New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is expected to participate in another simulated game at the team's complex in Tampa, Florida. He had five plate appearances and worked out in right field on Friday. The 2017 NL MVP has been hampered by injuries all year long, playing in just nine games with New York. This time, he is coming back from a sprained right knee that he hurt on an awkward headfirst slide into third base June 25 against Toronto.
