                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Dakota Hudson, St. Louis Cardinals (12-6, 3.63 ERA, $894):
Hudson has been a big help in the Cardinals back-and-forth battle with the Cubs for the NL Central crown. The 24-year-old rookie has a 1.08 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP over his last three starts and is coming off a 6.2 inning performance where he didn’t allow a hit. Hudson and the Cards are sizeable -180 favorites for tonight’s game against the visiting Rockies. The total sits at 9.

                  SLUMPING

Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates (5-6, 5.65 ERA, $304):
It’s been a rough second half of the season for the Buccos, who have won just 17 of their last 52 games, but its been particularly rough for Williams. The right-hander has been rocked to the tune of a 12.75 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP over his last three starts, while letting opponents get on base at nearly a .470 clip.

Despite the slump, the Pirates are just slight +100 home dogs for tonight’s matchup with the Reds. That could have something to do with the fact that Reds starter Alex Wood is in a bit of a slump as well. Consider the Over 9 for this one.

                  WORLD SERIES PREVIEW

The Yankees looked impressive in the opening game of their potential World Series preview against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, getting to the Hyun-Jin Ryu, arguably the best pitcher in baseball this season for seven runs on nine hits in an eventual 10-2 win. If you like the Yankees to carry that success over to October, the time is now to bet them to win the World Series, currently on the board at +450.

                  BEASTS OF THE EAST

The Braves and Mets continue their pivotal NL East series where Max Fried (14-4, 3.84 ERA) toes the rubber against Zack Wheeler (9-7, 4.40 ERA) at Citi Field. After last night’s 2-1 14-inning marathon victory, the Braves now lead the NL East by 10 games over the Mets, who trail the Cubs by two games in the wild card race. With both bullpens getting taxed last night, we like the this one to go Over the total of 8.

                  RETURN OF THE KING

“King” Felix Hernandez returns to the mound for the Mariners for the first time since May 11 after suffering a spending most of the season on the IL with a back injury. Unfortunately, Hernadez was having the worst season of his career prior to the injury, with the former Cy Young award winner pitching to a 6.52 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.

And his return might not be exactly what he expects as the Northern invasion continues in Seattle tonight with the Blue Jays in town. When the Jays visit Seattle, the stands get flooded with Toronto fans from western Canada, making this basically a home game. That said, Hernandez is a slight -115 fave for this matchup.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                    13) NFL regular season needs to start soon, just to stop the tidal wave of fantasy football notes and opinions that swamp social media/cable TV every summer.

Here’s a hint about what will happen in Week 1 of the NFL:

NO ONE KNOWS!!!! Not me, not you, not the nitwits selling tout services, not the players/coaches themselves.

No one knows, and that is why it is so interesting.

                    12) Another reason college/NFL games have to start; ESPN2 televised freakin’ high school football games Friday. Right now, Dutch Fork leads Mallard Creek 7-0 as I type this, and I don’t know which state either school is in, though one is North Carolina, the other South Carolina.

                    11) Tennessee Titans’ LT Taylor Lewan has been suspended four games for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. Titans open the season in Cleveland.

                    10) Singer Rod Stewart once said that the next time he was thinking about getting married, instead he was going to go out, find a woman he hates, then buy her a house. I think he was joking.

Stewart has eight children by five different women.

                    9) I didn’t know that Sacramento Kings’ coach Luke Walton was named after Maurice Lucas, who was Bill Walton’s teammate on that great Portland team that won the 1977 NBA title.

Bill Walton mentioned that when he was on the White Sox-Angels game last week.

                    8) Mike Yastrzemski hit 17 homers in his first 75 games for the Giants, just like Willie Mays did.

                    7) Uniforms for Players’ Weekend aren’t good; the normal uniforms are just fine. Creating another set of merchandise to put in your next catalog in order to suck some more money out of consumers isn’t a great idea.

                    — What is the point of having names/numbers on back of an all-white uniform?
                    — Pitcher for the team wearing the white uniform cannot wear an all-white hat, so they had to make equally terrible looking black hats.
                    — Best part is that players can wear whatever shoes they like, so there are lot of weird colored shoes being worn.

                    6) Strange story of the day: NASA is examining a claim that an astronaut improperly accessed the bank account of her estranged spouse from the International Space Station.

She allegedly committed this crime while in outer space; who do you have on the jury for this trial, Mr Spock and Captain Kirk?

                    5) Orioles GM Mike Elias fired 11 members of the team’s scouting department and front office as part of an effort to turn around a team in the early stages of a major rebuild.

                    4) Baseball stuff:
                    — Milwaukee DFA’d P Jhoulys Chacin, their Opening Day starter
                    — Atlanta signed C Francisco Cervelli, who had been dumped by Pittsburgh
                    — Miami OF Brian Anderson broke his hand, is out for the year.

                    3) Team USA was -$500 to win the FIBA World Cup before they lost that exhibition game in Australia Saturday; they’ve been bet down to -$150 since then.

                    2) Never heard of Seth Moulton until he announced he was running for President; his attempt didn’t go too well, and he dropped out of the race this week. But Seth Moulton deserves to be recognized for what he’s done for this country:

Seth Moulton is a United States Marine who chose military service after graduating from Harvard. He was a platoon leader during his four tours in Iraq, during which he earned the Bronze Star and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for Valor.

This a guy who is worthy of all of our respect. Thank you for your service, Mr Moulton.

                    1) Washington Nationals have led in the 8th inning or later in each of their last 18 games, going 14-4 in those games.

                    • Dodgers beat Yankees 2-1 in matchup of baseball's best
                      August 24, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Kenley Jansen escaped a bases-loaded jam in a bizarre ninth inning that saw both managers on the field trying to figure out what happened, and the Los Angeles Dodgers held off the New York Yankees 2-1 Saturday.

Jansen struck out Mike Tauchman and pinch-hitter Gary Sanchez to end a matchup between the teams with the best records in baseball.

But it was the play right before that to load the bases that left most everyone in the ballpark wondering what was going on.

There were runners at first and second with one out when Gio Urshela hit a grounder to third baseman Justin Turner, who looked to start a game-ending double play. Second baseman Max Muncy caught Turner's flip but then got wiped out by Brett Gardner's hard slide for an apparent forceout.

Gleyber Torres, who started the play on second, rounded third and then headed home with Muncy down on the ground, trying to score the tying run. Instead, Torres was stopped by the umpires because time had been called. The strange sequence set off a 2-minute replay review. Gardner was called safe at second, beating the throw with a hard but legal slide.

Justin Turner hit a two-run homer in the third for the Dodgers. Jansen earned his 27th save.

Aaron Judge homered for the second straight day, connecting in the fourth.

Tony Gonsolin (2-1) allowed one run, struck out two and walked two. Joe Kelly and Pedro Baez kept the Yankees scoreless over the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, stranding three baserunners. Baez struck out the side in the eighth.

CC Sabathia (5-8) gave up two runs and five hits in four innings, tying his second shortest outing of the season. He struck out seven and walked one.

                      NATIONALS 7, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Trea Turner reached base four times and scored twice, Yan Gomes and Howie Kendrick each drove in two runs and surging Washington beat Chicago.

Washington has won four straight and six of seven to extend its lead over Chicago for the top NL wild-card spot to three games.

Chicago first baseman Anthony Rizzo exited in the fifth inning with tightness in his middle back - he missed time in May with back trouble.

Turner got Washington off to a quick start, going 2 for 3 with two walks and a stolen base to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 31 games, the longest current streak in the majors. Anthony Rendon stretched his hitting streak to 11 games and drove in a run.

Washington starter Joe Ross allowed two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. Five Nationals relievers combined to hold Chicago to one hit over the final 4 2/3 innings. Wander Suero (4-7) got the final two outs of the fifth to get the win.

Jose Quintana (11-8) allowed four earned runs in four innings and had his career-high streak of seven straight wins snapped. Nicholas Castellanos had two hits and an RBI for the Cubs.

                      ORIOLES 7, RAYS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Pedro Severino hit his first career grand slam, Hanser Alberto and Jonathan Villar homered on successive pitches and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay.

John Means (9-9) allowed one run and five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked none.

Michael Brosseau homered for the Rays.

After hitting into a double play with the bases loaded in the first inning, Severino got a second chance with the bases filled in the third and sent an 0-1 pitch from Austin Pruitt into the left-field seats. In the fourth, Alberto hit a solo shot off Pruitt and Villar connected on the following pitch for a 7-0 lead.

Jose Alvarado (1-6) made his first major league start for Tampa Bay and lasted for only 24 pitches.

                      PIRATES 14, REDS 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Bell topped 100 RBIs for the first time in the majors, hitting a three-run homer as Pittsburgh routed Cincinnati.

After Colin Moran gave Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead with a pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth inning, Bell lined a fastball from Kevin Gausman into the left-field bleachers in the seventh to reach 102 RBIs.

Bell's career-high 32 home runs matched Bobby Bonilla's mark from 1990 for the most by a Pirates switch-hitter.

Moran's grand slam was his fourth in the majors.

Trevor Williams (6-6) allowed three hits with three strikeouts in six innings.

Reds starter Alex Wood (1-3) allowed four earned runs on two hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.

                      PHILLIES 9, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Corey Dickerson had four hits and five RBIs as Philadelphia beat Miami.

Zach Eflin pitched six solid innings for his first win since June 24. Eflin (8-11) allowed two runs, six hits and struck out two. Three Phillies relievers allowed one run - on Jorge Alfaro's homer off Mike Morin in the seventh - over the final three innings.

Scott Kingery's three-run homer off Miami rookie starter Jordan Yamamoto highlighted a six-run fourth and erased a 1-0 deficit.

Yamamoto (4-5) allowed six runs, six hits, walked four and struck out three. After winning his first four major league decisions, Yamamoto is winless since July 16 with an ERA of 8.18 in his last seven outings.

                      INDIANS 4, ROYALS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Franmil Reyes hit a three-run homer to help Cleveland beat Kansas City in a game in which the Indians lost third baseman Jose Ramirez to a right wrist injury.

Reyes' 30th homer of the season highlighted a four-run third inning against the Royals' Glenn Sparkman (3-9).

With the win, Cleveland moved ahead of Tampa Bay into one of the two AL wild-card spots.

Ramirez, a two-time All-Star, left the game in the first inning after fouling off a pitch. He immediately bent over in pain before walking off the field with a trainer. A team spokesman said he exited with ''right wrist discomfort.''

Mike Clevinger (9-2) struck out eight and allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings, remaining unbeaten in his career against Kansas City and improving to 4-0 at home this season. Brad Hand worked a scoreless ninth for his 31st save.

Sparkman allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings, extending his winless streak to seven starts.

                      ASTROS 5, ANGELS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman hit his career-high 32nd homer and Wade Miley earned his seventh straight win as Houston beat Los Angeles.

Michael Brantley extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a two-run homer in the first inning. Bregman upped the lead to 5-0 with a three-run homer in the third.

Miley (13-4) yielded one run on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings. Will Harris pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Luis Rengifo hit a solo home run in the Angels fifth. Mike Trout cut the lead to 5-2 with an RBI single in the seventh.

Dillon Peters (3-2) allowed five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

CHICAGO (AP) - Willie Calhoun and Danny Santana homered, rookie Kolby Allard pitched into the seventh inning and Texas beat Chicago.

Allard (2-0) allowed six hits, struck out eight and walked none in his fourth start since he was acquired in a trade with Atlanta last month.

Calhoun and Nick Solak had two hits apiece for the Rangers, who had dropped seven of 10.

Jose Abreu had two of Chicago's eight hits, giving him 1,001 for his career

Ivan Nova (9-10) was charged with an earned run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. He was 5-0 with a 0.85 ERA in his previous six starts.

                      CARDINALS 6, ROCKIES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Harrison Bader homered, Dakota Hudson allowed just two hits over six innings, and St. Louis defeated Colorado.

Hudson (13-6) extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to a career-high 18 2/3 as the Cardinals won their third straight and sixth in their last seven games.

The Cardinals moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Cubs for first place in the NL Central.

Hudson struck out two and walked three before being lifted for a pinch hitter after throwing 95 pitches. Tyler Webb, Giovanny Gallegos and Dominic Leone completed the four-hit shutout.

Paul Goldschmidt's 29th home run of the season capped the scoring in the seventh.

Rockies starter Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-5) walked six and allowed five runs over 4 1/3 innings as the Rockies lost their third straight.

                      BREWERS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames and Trent Grisham hit back-to-back homers, Keston Hiura knocked in two runs and Chase Anderson pitched five strong innings as Milwaukee blanked Arizona.

With the win, Milwaukee pulled within two games of Chicago in the race for the second NL wild-card spot. Arizona dropped 5+ games back of the Cubs, who lost to the Nationals earlier in the day.

Arizona had just four hits, three of which came against Anderson.

Anderson (6-3) picked up the win. Of his 87 total pitches, the right-hander threw 60 for strikes in front of a capacity crowd of 41,737.

Thames put the Brewers on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to right field off right-hander Zac Gallen. Grisham followed with a solo shot of his own two pitches later.

Gallen (2-4) struck out eight, but failed to get enough run support and dropped the second of his last three decisions.

                      BRAVES 9, METS 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Newly signed Francisco Cervelli had three hits and three RBIs in his Atlanta debut, and the Braves won their seventh straight.

Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth, and Billy Hamilton dashed home with another run on the play thanks to a mental lapse by the Mets.

Freddie Freeman hit his career-high 35th home run in the ninth. Ozzie Albies and Josh Donaldson also went deep for the NL East-leading Braves.

Rookie slugger Pete Alonso matched a Mets record with his 41st home run, a three-run shot.

Josh Tomlin (2-1) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.

Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to 18 games for the Mets, the longest active streak in the majors.

                      TWINS 8, TIGERS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Sano's three-run homer capped a five-run rally in the fifth inning, Jake Cave and Max Kepler also connected and AL Central-leading Minnesota beat Detroit.

Sano and Cave homered twice Friday night in a 9-6 loss to the Tigers, who have the worst record in the league. The Twins trailed 4-1 in this game before their comeback.

Cave led off the fifth with a double, Kepler doubled home a run and Nelson Cruz hit an RBI single. Sano pulled his 26th homer into the second deck in left off Edwin Jackson (3-7).

Cave hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Matt Hall. Kepler had three hits, including his 35th home run and sixth leadoff shot of the season.

Kyle Gibson (12-6) struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings while charged with five runs, four earned. He won for the first time since Aug. 3. Taylor Rogers secured the final five outs for his 20th save.

                        • LEADING OFF: Final day of funky uniforms, Yankees-Dodgers
                          August 25, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

                          WHO ARE THOSE GUYS?

A marquee matchup is set at Dodger Stadium when major league wins leader Domingo German (16-3, 4.15 ERA) starts for the Yankees against Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw (13-2, 2.71).

It's the last game of the day, meaning the final time we'll see those, um, unusual uniforms big leaguers have been wearing during Players' Weekend. The all-white and all-black, monochromatic outfits have been widely panned by fashionistas - not to mention that it's hard to read the numbers and nicknames on the jerseys.

''What's the slogan, `Let the kids play'?'' Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. ''Let the grown-ups look like morons.''

Said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts: ''It's not our proudest moment rockin' these all-white milkmen jerseys.''

Added Yankees manager Aaron Boone: ''When I put the uniform on I felt a little silly.''

                          BRAVES NEW WORLD

Francisco Cervelli and the NL East-leading Braves try for a three-game sweep at Citi Field and their eighth straight win.

Cervelli was an instant hit in his Atlanta debut with two doubles, a single and three RBIs during a 9-5 victory over the Mets on Saturday night. Released this week after batting .193 for Pittsburgh, the 33-year-old catcher joined the Braves before the game.

Atlanta lefty Dallas Keuchel (4-5, 4.14 ERA) starts the series finale against left-hander Steven Matz (8-7, 4.18).

                          NATS NUMBERS

Stephen Strasburg and the Nationals go for a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field and their fifth straight win overall.

Strasburg (15-5, 3.65 ERA) looks to become the first 16-game winner in the National League when he faces Cubs lefty Cole Hamels (7-4, 3.73).

Washington has won six of seven to extend its lead over Chicago for the top NL wild-card spot to three games. The Nationals have scored a total of 97 runs in their last nine games.

                          CHECK HIM

The Mets will see how closer Edwin Diaz is feeling, a day after he was forced to make an early exit. Diaz felt a little uncomfortable in the neck area warming up and it tightened up when he was pitching to Atlanta.

Diaz isn't sure if the discomfort will keep him out for any time and called it nothing serious. He'll see what the trainers say when he gets to the ballpark.

                          NOT YET

Reds star Joey Votto will not be activated from the injured list, even though he's eligible. He's been out with a strain in his lower back. Manager David Bell said the first baseman is progressing well, but isn't ready to return yet.

                          ROTATION RETURN

Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray (10-7, 3.99 ERA) is set to come off the injured list and start at Milwaukee. He's been out with lower back spasms. ... Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd (6-9, 4.24) comes back from the paternity list to pitch at Minnesota. He is 0-3 in his last eight starts.

The Atlanta Braves pushed aside the New York Mets on Saturday behind LHP Max Fried by a 9-5 score, following up their 2-1 win on Friday in the series opener. The Braves will look for their second consecutive three-game sweep of a divisional opponent when LHP Dallas Keuchel toes the slab on Sunday afternoon against LHP Steven Matz at Citi Field. The Braves have posted four straight victories against teams with a winning overall record, and they're 4-1 in the past five road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. In addition, they're 37-14 in the past 51 games on a Sunday and 35-16 in the past 51 games inside the National League East.

Coldest team: Royals (1-6 past seven, 5-18 past 23 games)

It's no surprise to see the Royals on the 'cold' list, as they have been atrocious for most of the season. Luckily for the Royals they have Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers who are even worse. Things do not figure to get much better on Sunday in Cleveland with LHP Eric Skoglund facing down All-Star Game MVP and RHP Shane Bieber at Progressive Field. The Royals are just 1-7 over the past eight starts by Skoglund, 2-6 across his past eight road outings, 0-6 in his past six against winning teams and 0-5 in his past five in Game 3 of a series. The Royals have won just three times in the past 14 inside the division, too. The Indians covered the run line in the first two games of this series.

Biggest Favorite Overall: Indians (-320) vs. Royals

The Indians have won seven of their past 10 starts with Bieber on the mound, and they're 5-1 in his past six outings against teams from the AL Central. The Indians have also cashed in 16 of the past 22 games, while winning 11 of the past 14 at Progressive Field against a left-handed starting pitcher. They're also great at taking care of business when they should, winning 71 of the past 99 against teams with a winning percentage under .400, good for a 71.7 percent success rate. The Indians are 0-4 in the past four in Game 3 of a series, and they're 1-4 in the past five vs. LHP. However, they have a very favorable matchup (see Skoglund's ugly trends above).

Biggest Road Favorite: Phillies (-180) at Marlins

The Phillies roll out RHP Aaron Nola for their series finale at Marlins Park on Sunday opposite RHP Elieser Hernandez. The Phillies squared the series on Saturday with a 9-3 victory after dropping the opener by a 19-11 score in a game which resembled a beer-league softball game. The 'over' has connected in each of the games in the series, and four straight meetings against the Marlins. However, the under has connected in three straight road starts for Nola dating back to July 7, and 4-1 in the past five assignments away from home. The Phillies are 5-1 in Nola's past six road outings, and 21-7 in his past 28 starts against teams with a losing record while going 4-1 in his past five vs. NL East opponents. However, the Phillies are 3-7 in Nola's past 10 starts against the Marlins.

Biggest UNDER run: Astros (5-1-1 past seven overall)

The 'under' cashed again on Sunday in Houston's home game against the Los Angeles Angels, and it's the stellar Houston pitching staff that is getting it done for bettors at the window lately. The Astros have allowed 19 total runs over the past seven games, and no more than four runs in each of the outings. The under is also 4-1-1 in the past six for the Astros against a losing team, while going 4-1 in the past five inside the division. They have the ball to LHP Framber Valdez, and the under is 4-0 in his past four outings against AL West opponents, too. The Angels counter with RHP Jaime Barria, and the under is 5-1 in his past six road outings and 5-2 in his past seven inside the division.

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (5-0 past five overall)

The Mariners fired out of the chute, and the season looked like it might be full of promise back in April. Things went south in a hurry, and their pitching is mostly to blame -- or the lack thereof. That poor pitching has been on display recently, as they have allowed a total of 18 runs over the past three outings. The offense has continued to produce, and that's a good recipe for over results. The total has gone over the number in five in a row heading into Sunday's series finale, and the over is 77-47-6 overall on the season. The over is 18-7-1 in Seattle's past 26 against AL East teams, and 3-0-1 in LHP Marco Gonzales' past four home outings against teams with a losing record.

Matchup to watch: Yankees at Dodgers (-180)

The Sunday night battle between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers might be a World Series preview. RHP Domingo German and LHP Clayton Kershaw will lock horns in what should be a tremendous pitching duel, too.

The Yankees are 20-6 in German's past 26 starts overall, and 4-1 in his past five interleague assignments. Going on the road doesn't bug him, either, as the Yankees are 4-1 in his past five road outings and 8-1 in his past nine against teams with a winning overall mark. The over has connected in five of his past six starts, and the over is 10-3-1 in his past 14 starts on the road while goi9ng 4-1-1 in the past six road outings against teams with a winning overall mark.

For the Dodgers, they're 45-10 in Kershaw's past 55 starts at Dodger Stadium while connecting in 13 of his past 17 interleague starts. The Dodgers are also an impressive 52-15 in his past 67 outings against teams with a winning overall record. L.A. have been finishers, too, going 52-22 in the past 74 in Game 3 of a series. They're also 9-4 in the past 13 following a win, while going 47-13 in the past 60 at home, including 4-1 in the past five interleague square-offs at Chavez Ravine.

                            Weather Report:
The winds will be blowing in from right field at Camden Yard at a 10-13 mph clip, affecting the Rays and O's. The Braves and Mets will battle the same conditions at Citi Field in their matinee battle.

On the south side of Chicago, the Rangers and White Sox will face a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in directly from center field into the face of the batters, while the Tigers and Twins see a 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field to third base. Also in Chicago, the Nationals and Cubs will have to deal with an 11-14 mph wind blowing from right to left. The good news is that no precipitation is in the forecast.

                            Biggest public favorite:
                            Indians (-320) vs. Royals

                            Biggest public underdog:
                            Red Sox (+125) at Padres

                            Biggest line move:
Astros (-195 to -215) vs. Angels
